e e e is hi everybody sorry something went wasn't muted um I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunch time streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and that actually was a yet another film that was originally on 35 and then it was a paper print and then it was shot on 16 and Etc um part of the Edison studio and it's it's very possible given the this was pretty short and there's eight episodes so it's very likely that this could have been on a kinetic scope um it could have been like a little peep show thing where you put put in a nickel or a penny and you watch these little tiny episodic things of printed uh photos uh I am just not with it today sorry anyways so it's it's like this big device and you you you watch and you kind of rotate it and it has all these these uh like postcard size images um so this could have been uh shown on paper like as a printed photo um and in a peeve show in a Nickelodeon or something like that and it also could have been shown um as film as well but uh what's interesting about that is how short the episodes are and it's almost like Tik Tock it's almost like Tik Tok so we kind of go all the way full circle all right um this is a little bit more contemporary from the 40s this is about the uh Uso this is private letters of private dobs enjoy [Music] go out and lick anybody who picks a fight with America cuz a little relaxation makes it easy to work hard yours Bill PS the girl at the Uso [Music] house her name is Sally dear M well now at last I am a soldier we went out for war games last week and some [Music] excitement I didn't forget to take my rubbers with me either like you said we went away together practically everybody in Camp and they got the soldiers out of the other camps to take part [Music] too let me tell you about these War Games M they're important cuz they taught us what we're going to be doing when we meet the enemy we didn't know exactly where we were going but all the time we could see more and more trucks coming up [Music] well we got to where we were going and after we had piled out of the trucks the sergeant gave us our orders for some reason or other he picked me out to lead one of the squads it was just a small bridge that we were supposed to capture but I guess that any Bridge can be pretty important especially if it's in enemy hands so we set out to get that bridge the sky was dark with airplanes and there were all kinds of guns and equipment on every side of me there must have been thousands of soldiers there just like me who are getting their first chance to practice all the things they've been teaching us you suddenly realize the reason for all the marching Drilling and instruction cuz it sure comes in handy now you feel as though you're ready for anything [Music] well pretty soon we came to the bridge there there were only two men guarding it and that gave me an idea I told one of the boys to walk right up to the centuries as if he were lost then when they were busy capturing my men it was a snap for the rest of us to steal around them quietly and take over the [Music] bridge I've been learning things about the army during war games maybe we do get a little tired and dirty but it sure gives you a thrill to realize that you're a part of a grand army boy just wait till we get our hands on the Real Enemy oh by the way we waited across a stream today and well I'm afraid that rubbers don't help much just when we were wondering whether we'd ever be clean again some people from The Uso came and rigged up places with showers for us hot water and everything M you should have seen the boys take to the water later on the Uso put on movies for us Rita Hayworth Carrie Grant and other big stars in a truck that followed us around wherever we went naturally when the Maneuvers were over I couldn't wait to get back to the Uso Clubhouse and tell Sally how much we appreciated what they were doing for us but she only laughed and said that it wasn't just for US soldiers after after all there are fellows in the Navy out there in the ocean keeping our enemies away from us and the fellow in the air core who are guarding us against an attack from the sky the men in the Coast Guard who watch our Shores and the Marines too we all in this war and the Uso was for all of us and I got to thinking about all the different kinds of fellas it takes to make up the Armed Forces of this country there certainly are an awful lot of us not only little fellas like me but big shots as well from every field all of them doing their share Sally told me about something else too about girls and women who come to crowded defense areas to get jobs in Parachute and gas mask factories powder plants and places like that and women who do all the other jobs near defense centers well many times these women can't find a place to live lots of them have to stay in trailer camps because they're on enough houses they certainly need someone to be friendly to them and so the Uso lends them a [Music] hand kind of ends um so that was from a collector uh um Paul collectors Paul and Elizabeth Nelson who uh were based in Houston um and so the thing with collectors in like a lot of these films sometimes just gets cut off like uh you know they got it on eBay and they get it and they're like oh it's cut off but I you know when I first looked at this film I thought oh well this is totally a loose L loose lips s ships film uh the idea with the title I was like okay well you know private dos' letters are not really private um cuz there's all these eyes that can look at it so you know they have to be censored blah blah blah but no that's not what this was about this is about um Uso all right um let's learn about New Zealand enjoy [Music] my first look at New Zealand the Harbor City of Wellington Wellington looks like many ports in my country the United States yes in many ways my country New Zealand is like the United States I'd like to welcome you to New Zealand I'll show you more of New Zealand if you wish yes I'd be very pleased to see more then let's leave the city and look first at the country does it look familiar it resembles our Northwest United States or Canada for instance this mountain looks like some in our Northwest mountains are a familiar sight to new zealanders they cover much of our country we have many forests too but the most familiar site to nearly all of us is the sea we are an irland country surrounded by water most of New Zealand is made up of two large islands North Ireland and South Ireland there are a few smaller islands near these two large bodies of water surround us the huge South Pacific Ocean and the tasmin Sea how big is New Zealand New Zealand covers a little more than 100,000 square miles and our population is more than 2 million but in the middle of a big ocean we're a small country we do have a large neighbor a Australia but we're distant neighbors the tasmin sea separates us by 1200 mil we're even further away from other lands nearly 6,000 mi from Japan nearly 7,000 mes from your country the United States because we're surrounded by water the ocean affects our climate ocean winds sweeping across the islands often bring us rain and help to moderate the temperature the moisture we get helps the growth of forests such as this one of giant Pines large parts of both islands are covered with forests especially where there is much rain along the Rainy west coast of the South Island thick forests grow on the mountain slopes but on the east coast of the South Ireland Rolling Hills are covered by small clumps of dry grass what we call Tusk grass this Tusk grass is some of the best natural grass in the world can you put this grass land to use yes for our largest industry sheep raising we call our sheep branches stations this station owner lives on the South Island his sheep are Australian marinos raised for their fine textured wool marinos graze on the Tusk grass covering the South iseland sheep country on the North Ireland sheep grazing is quite different for one thing North Ireland grasslands don't grow wild but have been planted on cleared land sheep grazed here are a different variety from from those on the south island because here sheep and Lambs are raised not primarily for wool but rather for meat I see you raise wheat too yes and some other crops but nearly 4 fifths of our Farmland is used to pasture livestock Dairy farming is our second ranking Farm industry for example on this small North Ireland dairy farm Rich grass land makes good pasture for dairy cattle because of the temperate climate cattle remain Outdoors the year round except when they are milked nearly all our Dairy Farmers have Machinery to help them with Farm chores such as milking electricity to run such machines is low cost because of the abundance of water power in the rivers of both Islands New Zealand's mountains running in a long line across both Islands Northeast to Southwest are the source of most of our Rivers swiftly flowing Rivers such as this one Supply water power to give us inexpensive electricity this electricity goes to farms and also supplies power to cities such as Oakland New Zealand's largest city located on the North Ireland about half a million persons live and work in Oakland Oakland certainly looks modern it is Oakland has modern schools and churches and museums all very important to new zealanders but Oakland is also a city of stores and offices a city of factories and Industry manufacturing Railway equipment is one of Oakland's big Industries but one of our largest national Industries is meat freezing refrigerating plants such as this freeze lamb mutton and beef for export to other countries this large Dairy plant produces Dairy butter and cheese not only for us new zealanders but for export to other countries I've seen New Zealand cheese in our stores quite possible the United States and Canada are among the best customers for our butter and cheese here in Oakland's busy Harbor products we've seen are loaded aboard refrigerated ships Bound for ports across the sea I noticed that many of these ships are from ports in Great Britain yes we often see Britain's flag in our ports because most of our exports go to Britain this is New Zealand's flag notice how much it looks like the flag of Britain our parliamentary government too is built upon a British model and we are a member of the Commonwealth of Nations more than 90% of our people are of British ancestry thus we new zealanders have many of the customs of all English-speaking peoples for instance our libraries Supply us with the latest books in English the language we speak in New Zealand our many schools too show British influence at school students study such subjects as history and government which help to train them to be useful citizens but our British Traditions are mixed with other Traditions those of the MA's the name on this signpost papakura is a mai name I've read about the Maes aren't they descendants of the early settlers in New Zealand they are this Mari Farmer's ancestors came here centuries ago about the year 1450 the poian mares who lived upon small scattered Pacific Islands more than a thousand miles from New Zealand guided their canoes here in a series of Daring ocean voyages many marry Customs have influenced our British traditions for instance rhythmic Mari music and dancing are exciting to hear and see everyone seems to enjoy the fun dancers and musicians and Spectators as well from us the Maes have learned much about farming and commerce and from the Maes we you've learned much about enjoying life in New Zealand this may mean visiting the thermal region of the north Ireland where Steam and boiling water rise from deep in the earth it may mean fishing in a clear Swift stream it seems as though you enjoy sports very much we do we like to hike or play cricket or sale our country provides wonderful opportunities for recreation but we new zealanders think of our country also as a land of sheep stations dairy farms and industries that prepare meat and dairy products for export and we're developing new Industries such as this plant in the thermal region which uses steam to generate electrical power from what I've seen of New Zealand I'd say that your future looks really exciting we New zealanders Hope so we feel that we're still a pioneering people because of our pioneering Spirit we look forward to the future and what it holds for us and our island country of New [Music] Zealand so that film was weird to me because you had two narrators um a New Zealander and some us guy who I I don't understand understand like he what why he had to be there because basically he basically said oh well this is like our this is like our mountain range or this is oh we've seen your cheese in our grocery stores and it all you had to do is just give those lines to the New Zealander and he could say you know this is such and such mountain range which is like your blah blah blah range or um you may have seen our uh New Zealand cheese in your grocery store like why did they have to have two two guys really not quite clear on that but you know whatever uh all right um I think that was that was a cornet film and we got another cornet film so we've been if you've been keeping score we've been uh scanning both encyclopedia branica and Coronet uh films uh for both of the companies that actually own those intellectual properties um so that's what you've been seeing and the thing is I've considered them to be the giant they're the huge educational film companies the two really big ones uh what's fascinating is they were both based around Chicago so Chicago is kind of the Hollywood of educational films in my mind um so uh you know there were other ones that on the East Coast West Coast but Chicago because then there were people that made films for both of those companies and they started their own companies like Journal films or actual films um so anyways here's another uh cornet the nature of energy enjoy [Music] in early days man worked mainly with the energy in his body today we use many forms of energy energy which can work for us in a wide variety of ways we're preparing to shoot a motion picture on energy let's see how many ways we are using energy to make the picture we have our lights and the camera the energy of human muscles does the work of moving the camera when the camera is in place another kind of energy electrical energy will do the work of running the camera well there we are just about ready we use sound another form of energy to talk and give instructions and now we'll check the lights lights use electrical energy do they do work do they move objects not exactly but strong light does cause the indicator of this light meter to move so as we'll see light too is a form of energy well all set camera action and here's what the camera sees some metal balls some matter normally at rest energy is required to move these objects muscular energy lifts the metal ball Against Gravity as a ball is lifted it gains in potential energy the energy of position as the ball drops the potential becomes kinetic energy the energy of moving objects this kinetic energy can be transferred through the balls so that the ball at the other end is lifted gaining in potential energy think about what's happening here and you may have a better understanding of potential energy and kinetic energy the same principle is used in a pile driver the kinetic energy that drives the pile comes from the position of the hammer potential energy energy and how is the hammer lifted by the steam engine which gets its energy from the chemical energy of coal chemical energy can do work when it causes certain substances to react with one another for example vinegar and baking soda contain chemical energy this is stored or potential energy when the two chemicals are kept apart but mix them together and you see a transformation of a little of the chemical energy into motion or work a storage battery accumulates chemical energy when it is charged this is changed to electrical energy when you press the starter button to turn over the motor and when you step on the gas the chemical energy of the fuel is changed by combustion into heat energy in the motor which moves the car let's examine this subject of heat as a form of energy in this laboratory demonstration we can see Heat doing work this turban wheel is matter at rest heat from the bunson burner will warm the water from about 25° Centigrade on up to the boiling point heat causes the water to turn to steam which expands and moves the turban expansion due to heat is the basic principle behind all kinds of heat engines closely Allied to heat are a number of other forms of radiant energy radiant energy travels through space in waves of different wavelengths you've heard of radio waves and television the energy travels in wavelengths from a qu of a mile long down to a few feet in length infrared Rays a form of heat are radiant energy with a wavelength shorter than 100th of an inch still shorter are the waves of visible light from the longer red Rays through the Spectrum to Violet ultraviolet such as the tanning rays of the sun is energy with an even shorter wavelength X-rays and gamma rays can travel through opaque objects and are extremely short about 1 billionth of an inch all these waves are forms of radiant energy we also use energy in the form of electricity here in a simple motor that anyone can build we see motion caused by the flow of electricity electrical energy can be used to do work to operate such machines as this street car the energy to move a street car must be brought from somewhere through wires from an electric plant perhaps a Coal Fired Steam Plant or a hydroelectric plant here electrical energy is obtained from the kinetic energy of falling water and the whole system from water to street car might be thought of as a single machine a machine that transforms the potential energy of water behind a dam into the kinetic energy of a moving street car and the transformation of energy from one form to another is the whole story of our practical uses of energy we have devised a great variety of appliances tools machines and engines designed to make use of various forms of energy but what are the sources of our Energy natural fuel such as coal are one important Source ages ago energy from the which accumulated in green plants form the coal we use today falling water may also be called a source of energy but how did the water get where it could fall heat from the Sun furnishes the energy which evaporates water from oceans and lakes so that it can fall as rain and flow in our Rivers so the sun is the original source of most energy heat and light and other forms of radiant energy result from a process in the Sun a process We Believe of transforming matter into energy indications are that simple atoms of hydrogen in the sun are being built up into helium giving off enormous quantities of energy in the process this type of energy is called nuclear energy or sometimes atomic energy from the nucleus of the atom comes the explosion of the atomic Bond but we can demonstrate some very gentle effects of nuclear energy we use a device like this to measure the radiations of nuclear energy indications of such energy are picked up by the tube or probe of this Geer counter they are Amplified in this box and show up as a warning sound on the loudspeaker such a measuring instrument is an important tool in our investigations of industrial and medical applications of nuclear energy now you do not ordinarily think of a watch as radiating energy of course the Luminous dial gives off light visible in the Dark Yet the radium paint also sends out other radiations gamma rays as the nucleus of an atom here and there breaks up we shall hear indications of matter atoms of radium being transformed into energy we can also see indications of this radiation of nuclear energy Rays given off by the radium atoms cause this needle to move and so we've learned a little about our sources of energy and the forms it may take we've seen potential energy the energy of position transformed into kinetic energy the energy of movement we've seen an example of chemical energy heat energy electrical energy and nuclear energy matter transformed into energy in this picture we've shown just a few examples of different forms of energy wherever you see work being done find out how energy is being transformed and how it is being applied what can you learn about the nature of energy [Music] that's a great film it starts off with that awesome music and uh they get right into it they get right into it with some cavemen around a fire it's really entertaining um uh so if you are interested in a tragic story uh do research on uh the women who worked in watch factories who uh were painting radium uh on watch dials and would take the tooth the brush and kind of make it a point with their lips dip it in the paint and blah blah blah it's not a not a very happy story all right um so behind me we're going to give this a shot uh on the the um scanner uh we have a bunch I'm hoping a bunch of movie trailers we'll see how this works out we'll see how the um the splicing goes with this um and these are different than your traditional movie trailers that you would see in a theater these are meant to be shown on television so they tend to be a minute uh 30 seconds 45 seconds 15 seconds uh whereas if you go to a theater they're a couple of minutes long um and they also tend to um they don't get as adult as a as a movie TR trailer in a theater would be so uh it's interesting to kind of watch and then compare to the actual film you say like wait a minute why they're selling this as a romance they're selling this as a screw ball comedy they're selling this as a spy drama they're spelling selling this as a Noir uh We've run across that seen different approaches to how they sell um a film on television all right so here we go let's give this a shot see what happens enjoy [Music] to pick up a young hitch nothing unusual about that you've done it a 100 times before but this time it was different because that was it um was a next bag of stuff um I think there was one faded color uh thing in there but it was a lot of uh War pictures spy pictures uh and you know I kind of am wondering I'm thinking about um the oh I just saw a comment I want to clarify this I'm going to go off so uh someone commented that there was Major vinegar syndrome on the Tony Curtis movie so um actually that movie uh the colors faded and it wasn't faded because of uh the vinegar uh that's generated by the acetate uh that was just um dyes made by C back that just didn't last uh and that can sometimes happen just naturally it could be related to how it was stored but it didn't have a vinegar smell to it uh vinegar syndrome is a totally different thing believe it or not so you can have six you know you can have film that can suffer from lots of different things like mold can grow in the Emulsion cuz it's kind of this gel uh you can have um vinegar syndrome where the a the base clear base begins to break down and it has this chemical reaction where it starts releasing acetic acid uh which is vinegar uh and that begins to corrode the can the can becomes airtight and then the it gets even worse and worse uh the film becomes very doesn't isn't pliable anymore and it begins to uh shrink and all this stuff nasty stuff happens to it um but yeah sometimes the color dyes can just fade uh the other thing that can happen to it is somebody uh drips water on it and and you get water damage so there you go so one of the things I'm kind of wondering I I don't have the research here but some of those seemed like they weren't television trailers uh they don't have that same kind of feel that a 60s or 7s trailer has so I don't know if these were shot on 35 and shown in theaters uh and then reduced down to 16 for The Collector Market or I don't know I have no idea where these came from um these were not distributed normally so who knows who knows but uh there's a little bit of geeking out for you um and uh I think that's what we got today that's the last film I feel bad that I wasn't able to show you those uh tv ads on Friday because of all the spicy problems basically the splices were breaking and falling apart and I tried to transfer some after the show and it was just I was like oh my God I'm gonna have to repair all of these which is no fun um but thanks for joining us today uh one of the things I realized uh over the weekend I was talking to a friend who also does a streaming show a live streaming show uh he is the dvo archist and uh so he does every Thursday he talks about dvo stuff but he also kind of shows um he's also an avid record collector so he shows stuff that he uh has bought or has found um and so we were talking about our audiences and I got to say our audience my
