hi everybody wow Clear My Throat uh hey this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and today is our last day in Connecticut and hopefully we will be back in the archive tomorrow on Wednesday but uh I got a bunch of films for you today kind of a mixed bag of stuff uh let's see uh start off with cornet film uh list in his music it's FR list uh sharp departure from lomania that was made by um um who's the filmmaker Russell uh I want to say Kurt Russell that's not right anyways uh that was a wild and wacky 7s interpretation of Fran List's life uh and this has nothing to do with that uh next is how do you Zoo which is a TV program and it was shot at uh St Louis Zoo it's kind of an interesting look at like hey let's visit our Zoo uh next a cornet film date edette which those are always great of course um and you're like why did school systems feel like it was important to teach uh kids about date etiquette goes Way Beyond the three Rs uh next is um see yourself tonight which is a odd program to where they would show up at this place and basically interview people and then they would see themselves at in later in the evening after after they processed the film just kind of interviewing people um then uh K Hills seat safety belts for Suzie which is a uh basically trying to get people to use safety belts especially kids uh and this is before safety belts were required in uh cars so this was very early on oh Tucker I'm sorry there's a dog out here and then finally uh we'll get back to coronette with overcoming fear uh where undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists who ever lived list was also a great teacher his amazing skill was passed on to generations of pupils to become a lasting influence in music [Music] list also was a champion of Romanticism in music his long life from 1811 to 1886 included the 1830s and the 1840s a high point in the Romantic Period during these years list knew writ and composers of the Romantic school George sand Victor Hugo Paganini chopan and many others List's own music as well as his playing reflected the ideals of Romanticism it is emotional colorful poetic often it is music that tells a story depicts a dramatic scene or interprets a mood the Hungarian rapid to which we are listening is an example of romantic music it appeals to the heart as well as to the mind often romantic music reflects the spirit of nationalism in the Gypsy folk music of Hungary fron list found much inspiration Hungary was his native land and the life story of list begins in Hungary in 1811 fron list was born in the village of riding Hungary where his father was an employee of the celebrated eser hay family at one of the Esther hazi palaces in eisenstat an important event in France's Boyhood took place this fabulous Palace was the country home of Prince Esther hazy patron of poets painters and musicians it was here in a setting that reminds us of a fairy tale that 99-year-old France was brought by his father to play for the prince with this visit the boy pianist began his amazing career after his success here the next stop was Vienna here he played a series of concerts one of his audiences included the Great Master Beethoven who said of the boy list he will be heard from after studying music in Vienna list and his father made their way to Paris the great capital of culture in Europe unable to enter the conservatory of Paris because of his foreign birth list studied with private teachers in Paris he was being compared to the boy Prodigy Mozart within the next few years he gave concerts in England the French provinces in Switzerland and then again in Paris in Paris list came under the influence of other composers at the Paris Opera he heard the playing of Paganini the great violinist the music where hearing is by list based on a violin Caprice by Paganini list was dazzled by paganini's great skill and he was impressed too by this orchestral work by Hector bero the saon fantasti a romantic composition Hector bio was an important figure in Paris a member of a circle of people that included Parisian aristocracy in 1834 in her Paris home list met the Countess Dagu a brilliant woman who was one of the great loves in his life list often performed for friends gathered at her home bero later describ these informal concerts in his memoirs [Music] but admiration was not enough list wanted to study to learn more from 1835 to 1840 he traveled in Switzerland and Italy at Geneva Switzerland list lived for a Time studying philosophy at the University of Geneva he was interested too In classical literature especially the writings of Dante Dante's Divine Comedy was the inspiration for the Dante Sonata which we are hearing now the strange and agonizing World Of The Inferno was translated by list into music that excites the emotions list not only wrote original compositions he transcribed The Works of other composers in these transcriptions Liss took many orchestral and vocal works and arranged them for the piano thus he helped to bring the music of other romantic composers to a wider audience list also found inspiration in the other arts in sundrenched Italy for example in the town of Pisa he saw beautiful architecture at Pisa he also visited the cemetery the compos Santo there he gazed upon a medieval painting on the Triumph of death this somber theme he translated into his eloquent Toten tant the dance of death [Music] but it was life not death that France list poured into most of his music from Italy with its warm and beautiful landscapes from cities rich in Beauty and history he was ever Gathering the sights and sounds that would go into his romantic music I live he said not in myself but I become a portion of that around me in Rome in the cistin chapel list studied the works of Michelangelo and other artists he said Michelangelo and Raphael make me better understand Mozart and Beethoven constantly seeking to understand himself Lis turned more and more to religion which had always interested him on one hand he sought meditation and spiritual experience on the other hand he could not forget his world Fame as a performer once again he decided to make a tour through the beautiful reinland country wherever he went he was acclaimed the tour took him to many cities such as historic cence in Cologne he played in ceremony celebrating the completion of the cathedral in bond he played for a Beethoven celebration after being heard in nearly every major city in Europe list brought his concert tours to an [Music] end list was now more famous than ever the music we are hearing is the conero number one in E Flat it is among the many important Works list composed in the town of viar Germany where he settled in 1848 the master study in viar became the center of his teaching and composing yet success did not seem to offer satisfaction the influence of religion was stronger than ever and so list returned to Rome the great religious Center of Europe here in 1865 the composer decided to become a member of the priesthood list the Prince of pianist became the ab list for the rest of his life he was busy both in Rome and in viar here pupils from many parts of the world came to study under list some of them to become renowned pianists in their own right list was as always the great teacher he never accepted fees for his teaching but was content to help and encourage pupils who showed promise all was a champion of others list not only encouraged his own pupils but also young composers the career of Richard Wagner was greatly helped by list and it was in vogner's home in byro Germany that list spent his last days here he no doubt pondered on the meaning of life and the meaning of Music many elements had gone into the making of his music classical literature had furnished some themes as had the Poetry of romantic writers there was the influence of religious experiences and the influence of the music of other romantic composers his own unique contribution to music was the symphonic poem of which Le Prelude is a good example in the Romantic tradition Le Prelude translates a dramatic idea into music of this symphonic poem list wrote what is life but a series of preludes to that unknown song of which the first note is death in a way Le Prelude sums up his music and his life once list had written I have felt that the various aspects of nature did not pass before my eyes like meaningless pictures but that they evoke profound emotion within my soul list was talking about Impressions Impressions that evoked music this was the theory that was to affect much of the music of the future [Music] [Music] how do you Zoo ladies and gentlemen how do you zoo that sounds like a play on words doesn't it but we really mean it how do your zoo most of us visit our zoo on Saturdays and Sundays and holidays when Mom Papa the kids can get out for a Gaya holiday together and most of us go for the animal shows such as those made famous by director George P verhill at the St Louis Zoo record crowd sometimes more than 50,000 attend this famous zoo over the weekend jam-pack the modern Amphitheater where the monkey shows go on they're off to a thrilling start the happy chimps take their daily caner on streamline ponies scale down to size here's an easy one if you know how to do it there is one more chimp and Pony and someone is bound to be left at the post till the next trip around looks easy but ask the trainer this took long hours of patient work uh-oh looks like a touch of rodeo will he be able to hang on shuck says the chimp that's nothing I haven't seen the horse yet that couldn't be tamed by my Spanish Fandango so it goes two chimps and a ball in a barrel of fun producing a show that is Lov from coast to coast and justly world famous time out for refreshment and to wander around the grounds before going to the next show this time it's the elephants how's this for a hoola two tons of it they say an elephant never forgets but we wonder what Little Eva remembers training is a thing long hours of it before the show can go on but it's fun for the animals as well as the audience and a great tribute to the trainers Strike Up the Band if anyone gets off key give him a squirt and these are the boys who can do it and so to another show a veritable Storehouse of entertainment say wait a minute who's that calling from the sidelines hey says Rocky Raccoon why don't you come over and see us we've got a show here too and it's true the side pits and small cages of anyu provide many good shows that are not on the schedule brother is busily washing his dinner before he'll take even a bite nor will he let anyone wash it for him he must do it himself and boy does he make a mess of it bears are sometimes call the raccoons big brothers because in many ways they do things alike these are the sunbears from far off Malaya bidding for our attention they're one of the few tropical bears but they are at home in any kind of climate here at the zoo they lead a a happy life and love to show off the tricks they have taught themselves Carlos knows one a very spectacular trip on the spare tire if he can only get those feet up that a boy Carlos the daring young bear on the flying trapes and he says he learned it without anyone uh-oh well maybe it wasn't worth it whoo is me a l al la say the young Kodiak bears but for those fancy chimps and trained elephants and the natural antics of the coons and honey bears how can we ever get people to come see us oh un happy day it is indeed a problem one that we may never be able to solve oh fiddle fatle says the head of the house don't be so downcast if only I hadn't eaten that extra carrot I'm sure I would think of something why should you worry about human beings anyway it's all rather boring if you take my advice you'll just put out the lights and go to sleep nothing like a little snooze but Bears on the whole are pretty good natural performers especially around dinner time notice the spacious pits in which they are housed there are no bars only a moat separates them from the onlookers in winter time they hibernate in cave likee cages inside the simulated rocks everything possible is done to make the animals comfortable this polar bear comes from the vast solitudes of the far north and is equally at home on land or on the water the soles of his feet are quite hairy enabling him to retain a firm footing on slippery surfaces polar bears love to die which is unusual for such large animals and they are excellent fishermen they can even do tricks like this when given some help from the cameraman I think he deserves an extra fish don't you well it's a far cry from the icy North to the tropical waste of Africa but here at the zoo it's just a few steps down the path if you saw this fellow in Africa you would head for the nearest tree for this is the dreaded two-horned rhinoceros they're unintelligent bad tempered tough customers they want to they can swing their weight around remarkably fast while we're in Africa let's have a look at a member of the horse family which usually comes in for a lot of joking about the color of his stripes more importance to the zebras is the fact that their stripes blend into their natural background making the animals difficult to see as they stalk through the African night in search of food well what's this coming up over the mountain none other than our old friend the greater kudu one of the 135 different kinds of antelope to be found in Africa obviously only the male could support such horns as these which sometimes go to 3 and 1/2 ft in length what a lot of fun he could have with a bunch of toy balloons no trip to Africa would be complete without a look at a giraffe that's about all you're going to get because Ida is very shy aloof did you say well she ought to be for giraffes are the tallest animals in the world forgive the corn but it's true a few steps down the zoo path and you move from Africa to Australia we arrived just in time for lunch at the wallabies or kangaroos to be less specific very nice people the kangaroos we entered the pit quietly so as not to disturb them they sat quietly eating their lunch while we made these close-ups but all the time we had the feeling that something was about to happen and our hunch is Right lunch over the original guided missile takes off and you're never quite sure where he's going to land notice the difference in size between the front and back legs and the use of the tail when he stops say do you realize how far you go when you take a few steps in a modern Zoo from India to the Arctic regions to Africa and Australia and back to North America that's quite a few thousand miles even for such long-legged birds as these These are the cranes the Pelicans the STS as these more spectacular Birds pass in review we realize how much has been written and photographed about their life story for the moment suffice it to say that they play an important part in any well-rounded Zoo here we come to a group which the zoo calls the South American pompus scene the pomus once the bed of an ancient sea has been turned by civilization into a great cattle and agricultural area but the Foothills and surrounding mountains are populated by wild animals and here a group of these animals live in Perfect Harmony the GU guanaco and the more domesticated llama and alpacas are members of the camel family Inky sees the camera and charges forward but this outpack is only interested in the food box we filled not so with old rubber legs the Llama he comes down with all his dignity to make an investig ation and pause for his picture well these peculiar animals look like they tried to be elephants and just couldn't they are tapers part of the South American PPA scene they are very shine and offensive going about at night in the deep forest in the neighborhood of water nothing looks so much like a log as the members of the crocodile family until the alarm sounded as we leave the South American scene we drop in at the reptile house to see how these unattractive young fellows are doing essentially a water reptile there live as a rule in sluggy streams and Powerful Strokes of their flattened tails for there are many interesting and humorous sites not on the schedule shows which await you at every turning [Music] have you ever worried about how to ask for a date or how to act when you're on a date well date etiquette will help answer your questions help you through those awkward moments help you have more fun hi Daddy I wanted to catch you before you left school before well would you like to go to the class play a week from Saturday night I know it's a little late to ask that's the way a date proposal should be specific not one of those you busy Saturday things that's a part of date etiquette and a girl likes it a girl likes a fair chance to decide whether she wants the date or not I couldn't get you in Spanish class and well well that's all right Danny I'm not doing anything Saturday night I I'd like to go oh that's well it's up to Danny to give Alice all the details of the date but if he leaves anything out she can always ask hard it ought to be good I think we'll enjoy it let's see I'll pick you up a week from Saturday about 0 7:30 how's that fine are we double dating that I don't know but I can let you know if we are we can talk about it during the week sure and then I can get your address from you too okay bye okay bye and don't forget well here is Saturday night Alice looks kind of sharp good grooming is an important part of date etiquette a fellow wants a girl to look nice when he takes her out and he likes her to dress to shoot the occasion well Alice is ready on time 7:30 that's when Danny was supposed to be here and he is here he's dressed to suit the occasion too Danny's timing is good not too early but not late very nice and on the first date a fellow likes it when the girl meets him at the door meeting her parents can be uncomfortable if it isn't handled well mother this is Danny Johnson how do you do Danny dad GL know you Danny how do you do daddy and I sit across from each other in Spanish class oh how's Alice getting along oh she's pretty good buo I'll get my coat Alice tried to get a conversation going but it didn't quite come off what do you do in a case like this did Alice tell you where we were going this evening yes the school play but she didn't tell us what it was oh it's a new comedy called January thaw it's supposed to be very good oh I remember reading about that it played on Broadway last year didn't it yes it did just about well Dan he's doing all right it seems he's comfortable and he's made Alice's parents feel comfortable he's making a good impression on them too of course the conversation isn't anything special but for a starter talking about the date is good enough enough parents are always interested in that say I like that coat that's really good looking oh thank you we'll be home before 1200 won't we Danny oh sure by 12 well the play starts at 8:15 it should be over by 10:30 sure we'll be home before 1200 probably 11:30 let's make it 12 at the latest just to be safe all right all right good night have it's a good idea for the girl to set a coming in time with her parents and when the boy backs her up her parents know that the two are looking out for themselves as they walk notice that Dany will change his position of course walking on the curbside isn't really necessary but it's polite at the play date etiquette has its place too watch when they enter the auditorium the girl follows the Usher as she would at a movie theater see and if there hadn't been an usher then Danny would have led the way well the hadn't been an usher then Danny would have led the way well the play's starting let's come back at intermission time now here's something for you girls to notice watch Alice see how she turns aside a little when money is involved on it date a girl shouldn't watch to see how much is being spent fellows like that kind of politeness oh Jenny this is Danny Johnson this is Jenny Carter how you doing Jenny Jenny I'd like you to meet Alice Wright Jenny Carter and you know I've been sitting behind you for a whole semester in Civics and I can't remember your name when you don't quite know what to do just be natural that's the most important part of date eate being natural and here's another point when you're out it's good to mix with the others but remember that your date is your first consideration now that the play is over they may go somewhere for a bite to eat you like to go to the blue end I've never there they don't have to but if they both feel like it here's something important for you fellas a way to indicate how much you can afford to spend how would you like this hamburger Deluxe I've had it before and it's pretty good the thing for Alice to do is check the price of the hamburger Deluxe that may not be what she wants but it gives her a guide to about how much Danny wants to spend I think I'll have a chicken salad sandwich watch it's Danny who gives both orders to the waitress we'll have a chicken salad sandwich and a hamburger Deluxe and two glasses of milk please two glass all right all right thank you well here's another one of those awkward moments what to do try a little date etiquette I'm I'm really having a very nice time Denny oh I am too I sort of thought we'd get along pretty well together well you know we get along pretty well at school and but we like the same things and I think we have a lot in common you know I've been noticing that charm bracelet ever since I called for you this evening I don't think I've ever seen one quite like it do you like it it is rather unusual yes it is I really like it I made it myself you did yes where' you ever learn to do that I make a lot of M my own jewelry no a man in New York we know talk about asking a girl to talk about herself is a pretty sure way of keeping a conversation going before long Alice will have Danny talking about himself and conversation will follow along naturally but let's leave them alone for the meal they'll use good table manners thank you are you ready to go uh-huh all right your coat of course Danny helps her with her coat and he won't forget the tip you know in most eating places tips our customer well I think we planned our schedule just about right it's not 12 yet I don't think my folks are still up oh he hasn't yet asked her for another date a little hint might help parents I really had a wonderful time Danny thanks for asking me Danny's pretty sure now that Alice would accept another date if he asked it's all just wonderful well I do think we have fun together uh-huh we do maybe we can plan something for later on I'd like that well we can talk about it at school uh-huh well no there won't be a good night kiss not on the first date neither one really expects it and so the date's over and we've seen some practical examples of date etiquette the kind of behavior that girls like to see in boys and boys like to see in girls the kind of behavior that makes dates a lot more [Music] enjoyable good evening the San Francisco television that's where I want to go you want to go there today oh I can't go there to be at the base today I see I mean would you like to go today with that 6 to 12 Ines of snow well that was to my surp surprised to hear that uh tell me something do you subscribe to the theory that many people have that uh there is a gradual change in the weather all over the country in other words warmer areas are becoming colder and that's I noticed that myself like in Chicago we really had a lot of snowstorms but now we don't get them in the Summers we usually are over 100 degrees now we don't even get that I through by the way of pton Anaheim up through Los Angeles there plenty snow along the coast too all the way up or all the way up but up as far Santa Barbara there's plenty of snow I see well uh you definitely know it's cold Are you a californ well I've been here 26 years in San Francisco I work for the interstate Utility Commission I see and uh what is your name we didn't get that Morgan Steve Florida about the end of September along around the 22nd of September and it was screw weather down there in Florida when I was in Miami oh the Florida chamber of commerce wouldn't like that do you [Applause] [Music] you remember how much fun you had in an amusement park when you were a kid well when you're a parent you live it all over again for the eyes of your child that's my little girl Nancy it's her first visit to this fabulous World of Fun and trolley a treat Alice and I had promised her before sending her on a visit to Grandma's oh I'm sorry I forgot to introduce Susie Nancy would never forgive me she's made suie an important part of our family you know how it is when a little girl has no brothers or sisters her doll can become pretty important and sometimes so help me I almost think the girl I mean the doll has a personality of her own sometimes the upkeep on Susie stretches our family budget Nancy wants her to have dresses just like she has and make sure Susie shares all the family treats well it is amusing and of course uh we don't spoil her like this all the time Nancy was only worried about one thing would she remember every single bit of excitement so she could tell it all to Grandma Alice said roller coasters are all right but she prefers riding in the family car we both enjoyed taking long drives together and this one had a special purpose we were on our way to pick up Nancy she had been with Alice's mother for a week it seemed a lot longer longer than that the house had been so quiet but we did have suie to keep us company with everything that Nancy had to take on the plane there just hadn't been room for a playmate the size of Susan then less than a half an hour out of town je watch out [Music] although we were both wearing seat belts Alice was badly shaken up I blame myself for maybe driving a little too fast you always feel guilty at a time like this even when it's the other fellow's fault I'd have to get Alice over to Dr McAllister right away then we discovered something that gave us both a genuine shock what if this had been Nancy [Music] I examined both Mr and Mrs Norwood and was happy to tell them that apart from a few abrasions and shattered nerves they had suffered no serious injury if they hadn't been wearing their seat belts however the verdict would have been different disastrously different I thought I was through with my patience when my eyes fell on another casualty Mr Norwood was a bit embarrassed until I told him about my work with dolls that had survived car collisions as a medical consultant for The Institute of transportation and traffic engineering I examined the dolls that represented children and the dummies that represented adults in the scientific Collision staged by the University of California at Los Angeles [Music] strategically placed cameras covered everything that happened during impact we were especially interested in what happened to children with and without belts because this subject had not been explored but even though they were only dolls and even though these were scientific experiments we couldn't avoid a feeling of tension and a sense of impending tragedy for several months the Collision experiments continued at different speeds at different points of impact sometimes with the passengers belted sometimes unb [Music] speeds such as these of 30 and 40 m hour are may be moderate by today's driving standards but not to the motorist slammed about against Glass and [Music] [Applause] [Music] Metal children should never be allowed to stand on the seat of a car sitting tends to restrict body movement generated by the forces of impact to the rear seat [Music] in many cases where the children were not restrained our diagnosis of probable injuries showed that they would have been killed baby held on laps were thrown completely out of the [Music] car even in the most severe collisions University findings showed that the infants were safest in bassinets with the long axis of the bassinet aligned with the longitudinal axis of the car and strapped in this position we also found that infants or children must never be held on the lap and restrained with the adults belt as Collision forces tend to crush the child perhaps you think a collision can never happen to you but the children will be safer if you admit that it could and prepare accordingly [Music] I wish that everybody could see these scenes because I don't believe believe that anyone who did would ever let the children go riding unrestrained [Music] again of course I had already made up my mind to have the back seat belts installed while the car was in the shop and we never go anywhere now that we aren't all safely belted oh yes you're probably wondering about Susie Dr McAllister knew where to send us and now she's as good as new she may be only a doll but she's never left out and that includes a safety belt for Suzie many people who would do anything to protect their children do nothing to save them from injury pain or death in the motor accidents that can happen at any time this is a Frank appeal to all mothers and fathers without restraints such as safety belts the rear seat of an automobile in itself is not adequate protection University research shows that children who will otherwise be killed can live to prove that safety is no accident oh bill hasn't won yet but he has qualified to swim in the finals so it is a special day for him it's rather a special day for me too you see I've been coaching bill and I feel I had making him one of our best swimmers but I said something about a handicap didn't I well there was a time when Bill was severely handicapped as far as swimming goes he used to visit the pool once in a while but it was the same story every time [Music] he'd never learned that way yes Bill had a handicap that handicap Was Fear [Music] at first Bill's friends used to ask him to join in the fun hey Bill come on here but no there was no use they forgot bill was there but Bill couldn't forget himself he kept thinking and worrying think I'm a coward do they well maybe I if only I weren't so afraid I could learn to swim I could have fun like [Music] [Music] that what you fell dad are you all right you're okay sure I'm a coward afraid of the water afraid to jump in and help somebody oh they're not cowards Ed or Jim or Jen of they say if you fall off a horse you should get right back on as soon as you can so you won't be afraid of horses I guess she's not going to let this thing worry her well well what's the [Music] use just wasting my time trying to swim being afraid huh giving up yeah giving up that's right you're Bill Bren aren't you my name is Barker I'm the swimming instructor around here I've um noticed you out there you really want to swim don't you oh it's no use Mr Barker I'm afraid I'm a coward you're the first coward I've ever known that had courage enough does that make you a coward most people are afraid of something most folks are afraid of wild animals a lot of people are afraid of speeding cars I am I always get out of the way when I see one coming toward me I guess that makes me a caret too that's different that makes sense but being afraid of water it's silly it's easy to say a fear is silly but that doesn't necessarily help you know you're letting yourself get in the habit of being afraid in the habit yes hey maybe you know my kid's sister she used to be afraid of dogs he's getting over it now but once it was quite serious we don't really know how that Fierce started but it might well have happened this way and my sister was very small the people next door had a large dog he was a rough noisy dog too kept fenced in the yard all the time perhaps sometime in her play CIS came up quite close to the fence when the dog came running toward her she was naturally startled and well if that happen several times you can see how she might have gotten the habit of being afraid of dogs and that habit stayed with her long after she forgot all about the first dog that frightened her you said she was getting over it now how did she do that how did she well she knew it was an unreasonable fear and she wanted to overcome it so she and I worked together we figured she should know dogs we felt she should make friends with dogs it wasn't easy for we took it very slow my knowing that a dog wouldn't hurt her wasn't enough she had to know she had to have experience in handling dogs caring for them there was a cute little puppy how could she be afraid of him how could she help loving the little fell who wouldn't come closer to a big dog for a chance to play with a puppy a little longer who could remain afraid of the pup's mother very long certainly not my sister it takes experience knowledge determination and insight to overcome fears that are not rational but it can be done maybe some people can do it I'm too much of a coward if you keep calling yourself a coward you're apt to start acting like one hey didn't I see your uh your picture in the paper the other day something about a bicycle ordinance wasn't it yes uh I just happened to have a copy right here one copy oh yes here we are you deserve to be proud of yourself student defends bicycle ordinance the paper doesn't give many details tell me about this well you know about the new ordinance to keep bicycles off the sidewalks mhm it's really an important safety measure but a lot of the kids didn't like it and they held this protest meeting some of us thought it was a good ordinance and I went to the meeting and said so it seems to me in the interest of safety we ought to accept this rule the least we can do is give it a fair Trucking on the sidewalk I like to feel safe so I'm willing to ride my bike in the street good going bill you do you agree with me sure well get up and say so uh go ahead [Music] on I tried to get out to speak up but he wouldn't and the kids are still all steamed up I don't know the courage of your conviction huh about it you said he wouldn't speak up even though he agreed with you would you say pray well I guess but that can't be Ed helped Janet today when she stumbled into the water he's no coward the other day you stood up for what you thought right against opposition so you're no coward you showed what we call moral courage well maybe maybe I'm just a part-time coward in the water that's where I'd like to help you want to learn how to swim well I come on then let's get started that day Bill started overcoming his fear he was in the habit of being afraid so the important thing was to get him in the habit of not being afraid Bill learned gradually over a period of several weeks some of the skills he would need for swimming as he became more skillful in the water he also became more confident he was ready to try actions that would have frightened him before because now he knew he could always Rite himself in the water and so needn't fear drowning [Music] then as he learned more Bill gradually eased into deeper water if he could swim across the shallow end of the pool he can swim across the deep [Music] end and of course the better he could swim the less Bill feared the water and he overcame his habit of fear he became confident whether or not he wins in the swimming meat he has proved to himself and to others that he is not a coward well we all have little fears which hamper us we should take a tip from Bill Our Lives can be richer happier if we overcome our fears [Music]
