minutes and I finally figured it out uh knock on knock on the scanner um just was not threading was not getting tension and so annoying I think I got it uh so I have a film set up um I'm not sure the title cuz it didn't have a can hopefully we haven't shown it before but let's just see here we go this is what we call Untitled Library film enjoy what is a library a library is information Knowledge Learning to be acquired from magazines films records and of course books there are libraries specializing in science medicine industry architecture farming theater art and every conceivable profession and interest but a library is nothing without people people who come to learn to look to listen and people who work there selecting organizing hearing in helping today's librarian is a specialist a nonetheless all right let's watch this film about measuring I mean and the color was so good this next film has the worst color and we tried to salvage it using the tools we had at the time and so it's just a mess so this is let's measure inches feet and yards enjoy oh [Music] say that was a good throw but how long a throw was it Jimmy doesn't know what's more he doesn't know how to find out but Jimmy would like to know how far he can throw a ball now Jimmy is trying on his last year's jacket just look at those sleeves my how Jimmy has grown the jacket just doesn't fit him anymore look father look how much Jimmy has grown how much has he grown Jimmy wants to know let's find out says father let's get out the board on which we've been making marks to show how much Jimmy has grown let's see this line is how tall Jimmy was last May let's see how much he has grown since then gracious could he have growing that much uh-oh standing on tiptoes that's no way to measure now let's really see how tall Jimmy is he is taller isn't he how much have I grown Jimmy wants to know half an inch says father is that a lot see for yourself let's see a half an inch but how can you tell Jimmy wants to know well it really is very easy have you ever looked closely at a ruler how many inches can you see here let's count them off off 1 2 3 from here to here is 1 in and another inch makes 2 in and another makes 3 in you can tell by the Numbers notice each number is beside a long line the space between the long lines is 1 in the line's not quite so long as the the inch lines right in the middle this is the halfin mark it was this Mark that told Jimmy's father he had grown a half an inch but how many inches are there on the ruler let's all count 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 why does the ruler stop at 12 because 12 in make one foot that's right we call this a foot ruler it is 1 ft long or 12 in now what is Jimmy's father getting it's a much longer ruler how long is it let's see 1T which is 12 in 2 ft 24 in 3 ft 36 in this is one yard we call this a yard stick because it is 3 ft or 1 yard long then Jimmy's father suggested a game the game we call it how long is that how long is the table oh about a yard says Jimmy Jimmy's father tries to imagine how many foot rulers he can see along the edge is that about one foot and another foot and a little more so father says the table is a little more than 2 ft long here with the yard stick you can measure but is this the way to measure no let's see the right way to measure first be sure the ruler is at the edge like this see and right at the end now you look at the other end of the table see which line on the ruler is closest to the end of the table this is it 27 27 in here is 24 in that's 2 ft and 27 in that's a little more so the table is a little more than 2 ft that's less than a yard but it wasn't a bad guess Jimmy wants to try again let's see the window ledge how long is that how long do you think it is Jimmy was going to make a good guess he thinks how far is one foot there no that's not quite enough about there Jimmy thinks and another foot would be about there and some more so thinks Jimmy about 3 ft a yard it won't take long to find out Jimmy knows how to measure with a ruler the end right at the end of the window ledge the ruler right in line along the edge and there's the answer 34 in almost a yard just as Jimmy guessed he thought it was fun playing the game how long is that he tried guessing the height of the table then he measured it that time his guess wasn't so good he measured the height of the chair then he tried measuring things about himself how far he can reach with one hand 6 in the length of one finger 2 in now if Jimmy's finger is 2 in how long is the handle of the screwdriver can you guess at school Jimmy could still play his game remember he measured and found that with his hand he could reach 6 in or half a foot now let's see half a foot and half a foot that's one foot and another half a foot now with Jimmy see if you can guess how long this paper is 6 in and 2 in 6 in and almost 6 in out on the football field men are working out answers to how long is that they are laying out the field with lines so many yards from each other and the lumber yard where Jimmy's father Works he too is measuring to find out how long a board is yes how long is that is a very important question Jimmy's mother is in a store buying some cloth the clerk is going to the cloth using a yard stick someone else answering the question how long is that after School Jimmy practices throwing the ball he still wants to know how far he can throw it look he's going to measure now he knows how to find out how long that is do you one yard 2 yards three yards four [Music] yards how long is that so now excuse me I need to go see if I can find uh let's measure uh ounces pounds tons and see if they they play the game how much does that weigh um see if they kind of keep that consistency I got another film set up on the scanner so excited oh my gosh like you don't realize how much of a pain this was off camera uh to bring you uh what we bring you sometimes I have to jump through hurdles and hoops and uh thankfully it paid off because otherwise I was like all right well I'll just show a bunch of stuff I've already recorded but we got this so I believe it was last week we showed or maybe it was earlier this week we showed helping the child face dos so today I found the compliment uh film uh helping the child face don'ts so let's see um how we uh help kids except knows and don'ts enjoy e when we were very young the whole world seemed to be filled with don'ts these don'ts continually blocked our impulses and frustrated our desires there were frequent don'ts intended to save us from harm watch out they're sharp there were endless don'ts for all the things we must not touch or take darling don't play with Daddy's books and there were don'ts to prevent us from hurting anybody no matter how strongly we felt stop Sunny you're hurting your sister again there were so many attractive things we wanted to play with when we were stopped we felt resentful it was hard to accept these don'ts no wonder we felt frustrated by these constant restrictions but we had to learn the don'ts for living in our social world how we Face these early don'ts shows in our personality throughout life one of the first don'ts the child faces is for its own protection exploring the world is exciting but the little child is unaware of the many perils even in the familiar home setting every child for example tries to climb stairs at this age yet it is sometimes dangerous very often the experience of being hurt helps the child to understand the meaning of Mother's don'ts however in a case like this the wise mother Comforts the child and encourages her to learn this necessary skill with safety sometimes the child gets into trouble by his overe eagerness for things he wants accidents often strengthen the don'ts but after such a shock a child needs to be reassured to overcome any feeling of insecurity mother's sewing basket attracts every little girl someday she will learn to use these things wisely and safely but now mother must protect her from possible harm thus many don'ts are to show the child what to avoid for its own protection each child however develops its own balance of courage and caution through these don'ts every child must also face the don'ts of property naturally this child wants to pick flowers in the park no no let's not pick flowers in the park there's nothing to stop her but mother's hand and voice mother explains that some things must not be taken by patient Guidance the child begins to understand again a tempting situation and a practical lesson in accepting the don'ts of property she likes crayons why not take them now mother enforces the don'ts the child gradually begins to realize that everything has owners in this way the child learns to recognize things that belong to others one of the basic lessons of social living the don'ts creating respect for private property are hard to learn because it is so difficult for the child to say these don'ts to himself a group of children playing together face the don'ts of living with others they discover that it is necessary to recognize and respect personal rights of other people in these varied activities children are learning to get along with each other under the guidance of an understanding grown-up this boy is eager to finish his building and the girl is intent upon her work impulsively the boy attacks the girl and breaks down her building he has to be told and retold that he must not interfere with others that he must respect their rights it may be fun to throw blocks but it may be dangerous for others this little child is not intentionally cruel but may accidentally hurt other children here everybody is absorbed in his own plane and then all of a sudden another occasion for the don'ts a child must learn not to hit or bite no matter how strongly he feels until the child learns to control his own impulses someone must restrain him to live and play together these children have had to curb their aggressive impulses they have learned that they can enjoy their own rights only by respecting the rights of others some children can accept these restrictions easily While others do so only with difficulty or not at all moreover each child does so with his own personal feelings about these restrictions but only by facing the don'ts can they all play peacefully together summing up we may say the don'ts Define the world for the child by telling him what he must not do for his own protection and also for living with others don't do that dear give the other boys a chance children need repeated don'ts again and again they must be reminded of what they must not do especially in relations with others here this boy is indifferent to the other children in the sandbox he is annoying his Playmates even endangering them he must be compelled if necessary to respect the rights of his Playmates the young child's Rebellion is understandable but sooner or later he must accept the don'ts not on the sofa darling please don't the don'ts range from the B basic lessons for protection respect of property and the rights of others to the don'ts for orderly living the don'ts in this way pattern children's Behavior into approved social conduct how each child faces the don'ts and translates them into personal conduct shows in all future actions and reactions and largely shapes the emerging personality don't the child must be compelled I like it the child must be compelled it's awesome um yeah that great James Brill too our of petroleum pulsing in great engines of the liners that Traverse the Deep on Land Oil feeds the fiery furnace or drives the diesel engines along farflung rails of Steel and on the open road well you know what makes your auto run for millions of years this source of power slept peacefully in the dark recesses of the earth until Modern Magic loosed the liquid energy from its Subterranean prison great areas became forests of towering dcks and here's how the petroleum Forest grows a Cellar is dug and a rotary table to turn the drilling stem and the bit is set in place round and round the rotary goes drilling deep down to oil a steam engine drives the drilling mechanism they're inserting a length of pipe lengthening out the stem for deeper drilling a new joint is waiting oil field workers are called Drillers rough necks rabs rope chokers the oil field treats our ears to odd and colorful names now the drilling stem has been lengthened then round and round once more down through layers of sandstone Shale Limestone down to astonishing depths this well 5,000 ft some 10,000 2 mil into the Earth and then after weeks of drilling fighting against natural obstacles the drill at last reaches the oil sand porous Rock which holds the oil much as a sponge holds water next the casing is low to the bottom of the hole and cemented in position then drill through the oil sand and a screen is installed at the base of the casing the screen extends down into the oil sand the oil flows through the screen up through the small pipe cubing to the surface so they've struck oil and now the well must be cleaned of a mixture of drill mud and oil some wells flow of their own pressure others must be pumped need pump power the power is transmitted to groups of Wells the ever swaying rocker arm the rhythm of pumping the unceasing heartbeat of the oil fields a 24 well hookup is the height of oil field power pumping black magic from two dozen drillings in the Earth all at the same time out of the ground the oil is cleaned of natural gas or water which is combined with it next the petroleum starts on its way through a great network of pipe lines there are powerful pumping stations every 40 or 50 Mi to keep it moving along the lines the lines of pipe alive with racing oil run through forests and over Plains to these silver discs their storage tanks where the oil rests briefly before it rides the waves in giant tankers and their Master pieces of ship building those tankers of Steel the largest navigate the sea at 15 knots and carry 5 and 1/2 million gallons of oil The Voyage of oil to the refineries the refinery with its modern structures technological towers minettes of science docks Office Buildings pageant of Industry day after day there is an endless flow of oil as the tankers discharge their Liquid Cargo unloading oil is a vast operation of piping through huge hoses discharge pipes on the vessel and receiving lines on the dock are connected and A Cargo of 5 million gallons is discharged in less than 24 hours no two caros of crude oil are alike so each boatload must be stored in different tanks and each batch must be processed individually with laboratory tests to indicate the precise treatment for each that is embodied science those masses of strangely rot steel forests of stacks glowering and hissing boilers leaping and winking fire boxes intense heat the Flames Roar in the furnace yet the oil flows so fast the heat does not Scorch It And scientists rest from the crude petroleum its tremendous power in the form of gasoline and other fuel oils and that's done in these towers called fractionating Towers Towers they divide crude oil into the lighter and heavier Parts those of different boiling points liquefy at different levels in the towers some lighter than gasoline liquefy at the top heavier Parts liquefy further down at the bottom are the heavy fuel oils are the raw materials from which lubricating oils are made when increasing use of motor cars pyramided the demand for gasoline to extraordinary Heights scientists were called upon to devise new methods how could a greater proportion of gasoline be extracted from the crude oil than that obtained from the fractionating tower alone to meet this challenge the scientists turned to products other than gasoline which are drawn from the cowe studied their molecules and found a way to change them to turn them into gasoline the result was cracking let's look at a diagram of a cracking plant here we see how one part of petroleum that is not gasoline is converted into gasoline called gas oil it is pumped through a pipe into a cracking furnace heated to over 900° under tremendous pressure and the individual particles molecules are broken into smaller molecules just as coal is broken under a hammer if we could see one of those molecules it would look something like this the hotter the molecule gets the faster it Wiggles until finally it Wiggles so fast it flies apart the pieces shoot around at Great speeds they eventually find partners and form new and smaller molecules that look something like this these smaller molecules are now no longer gas oil but are gasoline of high-powered knotless quality some of the gas oil molecules do not fly apart and must be separated from the gasoline this is done in the bubble Tower here the big molecules which are not gasoline are held back back and come out at the bottom as a liquid the gasoline goes up the tower as a vapor comes out at the top and is condensed into liquid gasoline gasoline that gives more power to you experiment is the key to it all and this is the experimental laboratory in the making of powerful motor fuel the control of temperatures is of extreme importance and it is measured to an accuracy of 100th part of 1 Dee gasoline is broken down into over 200 Parts in that elongated tallness of glass and each individual part is studied the laboratory with its strange gleaming of new and unpredictable things here are created modern Miracles with the chemistry of oil tank farm to which the motor fuel goes from the refinery and then out to the nation by railroad tank car and by motor barge pipelines run their web like Nets under rivers over mountains carrying gasoline that goes into millions of gasoline tanks to generate billions of horsepower for the nation oil means horsepower in a horsepower using World briefly in four words more power to you [Music] man that sounded like a young Paul Harvey it really did I'm I'm going to try to do some research and see if I can find um information about that okay so one of the things that that I like about you guys is that we all come together with common interests and uh support for each other and we try not to talk about headlines in here because this is an escape this is a way to look at old old times um this next film I'm concerned I want to show it but I also am concerned what it's going to do um and so let's keep our comments about the film and not about uh current political climates regardless of how you feel uh I know that many of you do not identify with the what I identify with politically but we don't have to we can just share our common like and so this is a film made by coronette called political parties and this is something that we use to be able to talk about um but I think it's it's become because social media is so fractured and so engineered to create um antagonizing and provocative messaging um it's hard to have a a regular discourse about stuff so let's just put our ourselves back to the time when this film was made and you're in school and let's just imagine that this is teaching us about political parties now please you're welcome to comment and rag on this film as much as possible but let's keep it focused so this is an experiment let's try it see what happen I trust you guys I love all of you guys even the people who will be uh voting against each other that's okay because we all love 16 millimeter films and this is an old 16 millimeter film so here we go let's all be on our good behavior all right [Music] enjoy the polling place is the heart ofy here it is our privilege but simply between the two major political parts all right so we might not have to watch this um because this film is super super Shunk super super shrunk all right that buildup all for nothing sorry um I'm going to have to try this on a different scanner that we have uh you notice I had this set up because the film is basically it's it's so warped and shrunk that it wasn't even touching against pointed executed as the hand drops the wheel is put hard over [Music] [Applause] [Music] now for the real test here's the Commodore and his staff of course and here are our students at the wheel no backboard test this time the Commodore is about to see just what kind of a teaching job has been done [Music] well here's bl's boy Sam all ready to show what he learned in class sure blel showed the film to Sam but Sam just wasn't ready to take it so he learned about end titles he wasn't prepared then and probably he isn't now Johnson may have taken the heat at saan okay but it didn't do my any good in class jonson's job was to teach Mike the countermarch but you don't learn much when you're asleep he should have known that a hot stuffy room makes a good anesthetic and not a teaching tool well at least Hardy's boy knows how to start the maneuver but that's not enough if Hardy had only discussed the film and answered questions he might have found out that bill missed the boat halfway through well too late for questions now this isn't going to help Charlie much on the maneuver but then nap should have found that out in class a little test would have shown the maneuver Charlie had in mind Smith's boy is no brighter than the other boys he just got a better break Smith not only prepared himself he prepared the students he showed the film under the best conditions that he could he discussed it and answered questions he tested the students and now both Smith and Walder are sure that Walder got the word and that is going to stick [Music] [Music] [Music] the gador isn't going to like this and gentlemen he didn't like it the bee is on you for a start with you here in the training center and the payoff is what you put in the students [Music] [Applause] [Music] mind the Commodore that was great um man this giant props oh they're so they were so great I uh I covet them I covet the giant thermometer and the giant fishing reel um all of that that's a really great film what you know this is one of the great things is so I show films that are made for specific um occupations and the ones that are made for projectionists are pretty great I in general I I have found uh three or four that are just really smart and hilarious so thankfully we'll just add that one to the list thanks for tuning in today we appreciate your eyeballs and your patience and your comments and
