so hello why isn't this stopping what's going on all right there we go um i'm skip alzheimer welcome to the ev geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that one uh didn't have a soundtrack to it um and it wasn't a print for distribution so we've been scanning stuff for the company that owns cornet and i think at one point they said that yeah we you know we got a lab our films were at a film lab um in storage and they closed and so they sent us back all our stuff plus other stuff and so i think that um this is this was what we call pre-print material uh the idea is that a soundtrack would be overlaid on top of it but um yeah that didn't have a sound and so we run across that sometimes when you see something that we have that says you know i'm showing it obviously it's supposed to have audio but it's silent it's because we did not when we were scanning the thing element that we were scanning didn't have a soundtrack so there you go that's the way we explain things here at av geeks um and you guys are refined enough adult enough good enough to be okay with me showing some silent material and i appreciate that so also i appreciate today in theory uh is our 650th show it might be more than that but we're going to call it 650 and we've watched over 300 no 3120 films again that number is loosey-goosey because we're finding new stuff uh all the time that we didn't log correctly so that's what we're going with episode 650 3120 so thank you for watching and to reward you we're gonna watch this film about laplanders enjoy [Music] the fall journey to the reindeer herds is about to begin the laplanders gather the last of the supplies they will need for the long trip ahead inga helps even though she is planning to leave the hardships of for she has a job in the city the hands that now take rich milk from the goat will soon be at work on the keys of a typewriter [Music] but peter calek the father is a reindeer laplander in the summer and early fall he fishes for part of his family's food it is easy work compared to tending reindeer but peter loves the restless life with the herds young laplanders fish too even though they are reindeer men like their elders [Music] like father the boys fish part of the time for food and part of the time for fun just the same they are proud as they walk home their willow forks heavy with char and salmon trout for the fish will add to the family store of food during the long far northern winter ahead but winter has already come to the tops of the mountains a chilly wind tears at the branches of the birch [Music] one day the small community packs up for the drive to the forest wintering grounds peter callick and his family are the first to start at the the heavily loaded pack reindeer will get a chance to rest from carrying the food and clothing of the family [Music] the journey has been hard but the work will be harder still at winter camp everybody is tired annie and the goats are tired peter and elsa and the reindeer are tired but they are close to home and there is the herd now it is time for slaughtering the full grown reindeer bulls flaplanders call the reindeer bulls starves reindeer bulls grow big and fierce and proud and this is the season when they are fattest and biggest the calic family has collected its herd now they must search through it for the best animals for butchering and the best for milking this is harvest time for the reindeer laplander one of the girls looks for a badger a reindeer cow there is one the lasso starts the herd milling and the family fortune passes in front of old grandfather and grandmother caleb some men have said that grandfather calek is like a highland birch for he stands so straight and tall he has much to be proud of his son is handy with a reindeer his name is honored his herd is large and sleek and healthy he is rich in the things that count grandmother caleb is watching the reindeer cows and her daughter milking one of them sweet cheese made of reindeer milk tasting of almond and smooth as butter will add much to the winter diet grandmother smiles at little nissi trying to help and keeps an eye on the soft-eyed reindeer cows but there is much work to do everybody helps as much as he can for the time has come sar time is here reindeer after reindeer is killed the antlers that were once proudly lifted are left to bleach in the sun later they will be made into tools for the use of the family every day more meat is collected on the drying stand out of the front hide shoes are made even the reindeer's stomach is important to the laplanders after it is dried in the sun it is watertight and sturdy and will be used to hold goat's milk for the baby another part of the reindeer becomes a doll's milk bottle for the children to play with everywhere are useful objects made from the reindeer the dried meat which is sometimes smoked or salted can be stored until the following summer or longer if necessary [Music] the racks are heavy with slabs of meat the fat is almost two inches thick on some joints in the middle of this abundance calyx stands as a king in his own realm he ties tendons to a split willow and hangs them to dry in the sun [Music] elsa calek later rolls the tendons on her cheek and uses them to make thread for watertight seams her oldest son sits next to the fire and works at preparing the leg hides to be made into shoes while her husband gathers wood the work is hard there's much to be done but even though the work is hard peter callock has a lot to be thankful for he works long and hard but he works for himself with no man to tell him what to do his son is strong and able the winter will bring no hunger to the calyx the shelves are full it is a warm house everything is safe and happy and as peter rocks the cradle he hums an old laplander's song [Music] my little son today you had your first lasso in your hand grow up be strong my little son the winter covers the fields and the ice is thick on the mountain tops all seems frozen and stilled forever but time is passing and by and by spring will come again spring will come again [Music] yeah that it seemed kind of uh playful with the music um you know definitely a different approach than some of the earlier ethnographic uh erp encyclopedia britannica films um just kind of like here's a day in the life of a laplander isn't it wonderful at least that's my take on it uh okay so behind me i have uh another film from the craig baldwin collection um and hopefully this will be so one of the things uh some of the i'm letting you in on a bunch of secrets so whenever you see a title in brackets um that's what we're guessing the title is we have no idea it could be based on the content of the film um and many films that we get don't have title information like it was cut out or never existed to begin with so we kind of have to figure it out so this is a way that we denote like we think that's what this is at least this is what we're calling it so here's atomic tanks enjoy atomic energy may change our daily lives unless we realize clearly what an unbelievably big source of power it is does anyone for instance know how much more powerful an atom bomb is than the conventional high explosive type i'll bet some of you have some pretty strong ideas on the subject how many of you have seen movies of an atom bomb explosion please raise your hand good at least half of swanson would you tell those of us who didn't see the movies what you think of the power of an atom bomb yes sir i saw the hiroshima pictures and the screen report taylor two cities and they showed you just where the center of the explosion was and how from miles around everything was white flat and just from one bomb i've been in berlin sir and i never saw anything like it there thanks sergeant swenson that was an interesting comparison riley doesn't look as though he agrees with you however how about it riley any comments sir they just haven't proved yet these atom bombs are so much more powerful than the regular ones tell it to all of us riley not just to me okay what i mean is the atom bomb hasn't had a real tough test anybody knows those [ __ ] towns are made of bamboo and paper hey wait a minute i've been in japan the japs have cement buildings just like us that adam bomb knocked down plenty of them too and some are left standing yeah how many that guy riley must be nuts once a shrewd question by the discussion leader starts discussion rolling it may run away from him if the men really get worked up over the subject an exchange of opinions quickly degenerates into argument then it's up to him to step in quickly and restore order but he must do so diplomatically a good way to settle an argument is to put it up to the men themselves some guys are so bullheaded they don't see facts when they stare em in the face gentlemen gentlemen i can't see how commenting on one another's mentality fits into the subject how about that man can you what riley and johnson both said was interesting but it didn't get us any closer to an estimate of how much more powerful is an atom bomb than the usual kind corporal billy well sir according to calculations based on the best available statistics the bomb that was dropped on hiroshima had an explosive power equal to 20 000 tons of tnt now tnt is known to chemist as try nitrotoluene and is much more powerful than conventional dynamite and thank you corporal gave us an excellent example of its explosive power let's take it from there now how may we utilize this tremendous force as a source of industrial power although a discussion leader must keep his men on the beam he must always let them do the talking that's point number four he's not a lecturer or a teacher but a moderator the referee of the group discussion finally we have point number five before closing the discussion summarize the important points that were brought up well let's see what we've got power atomic energy will eventually be the universal source of power billings told us that medicine radioactive isotopes have already proved their worth in medical research davis told us that war riley and johnson both battled to a draw on the effective use of the atom bomb restate the ariana's discussion more important than it is today we learned in school but tend to forget how important were freedom of discussion and independence of thought in the creation of this country and how often we've gone to war to protect these rights from tyrants who would have taken them from us how important it is then that the men who may be called on to defend that right again may know the meaning of and enjoy the benefits of free discussion the techniques of information our discussion may vary but the results are always the same as long as the right is preserved to exchange opinions without fear of thought control the road to world peace is still open [Music] okay so that's not a film about atomic tanks that's a film about discussion um it's a military film obviously made in 1950 but uh it's about the importance of i guess in in intelligent discourse um yeah i yeah that's a tough one because obviously it's a chunk um but yeah i don't i don't know i mean this is then the challenge is like okay well what is that film and you know so that's where it gets tricky meanwhile back on earth when we opened our minds very wide and found we were in the space age we found the computer was a constant companion i'm rod sterling and i've always been interested in man's mind in the heights and horizons beyond which it can transport itself a computer is in a sense the transporting of man's mind and this reel of tape has recorded on it the product of many minds fascinating equations limitless in their applications [Music] a special reel of computer tape has a lot to do with this this is our space shuttle a model of it an unbelievably sophisticated piece of hardware scheduled to zip back and forth with commuting astronauts in just a couple of years it was to ensure perfection in design of the space shuttle and a lot of other space vehicles that the special computer program came into being it was developed by the national aeronautics and space administration and it's called nastran short for nasa's structural analysis what makes nastran especially exciting is that it's been found to work equally well in the structural analysis of all kinds of things right here on earth just about everything that shakes rattles or rolls from a wind-blown skyscraper to an automobile on a bumpy road my building something and then testing it is the time-honored way but it's expensive time-consuming and not always foolproof when mastram is used for analysis lab tests are just cross-checks the automobile frame and the wheel suspension always cause engineers particular concern but they get covered up you don't even think about them unless your ride is uncomfortable [Music] [Applause] what causes the discomfort the bumps and vibrations is the flexibility or lack of it in the steel from which the frames and front ends are made and when it's finished the combinations of weight and flexibility determine what kind of ride you'll have [Music] the millions of families who take to the road in new cars each year don't particularly care about the strange engineering terms used in analysis but they can appreciate the results this kind of total design capability in masstran is now available to the public the test try cause no real surprises when the design has been analyzed by nastran before production begins a major space-age spin-off mastrand better designed for greater safety better ride [Music] not a better ball game but a better stadium nastran's computer analysis is now working on it whether it's the design for a geodesic dome or the rearranged structure of the geologic dome the public who always foots the bill for such civic structures wants to know that it's better this is the award-winning design for a new stadium in seattle nastran was used for the structural analysis who knows maybe there will be a whole new ballgame [Music] television anyone television anytime and most importantly anywhere to have television anywhere there must be antennas sophisticated antennas all very large and all out of doors where the winds and the elements can cause trouble special design requires special approaches now they're using nastran this is a model of a new antenna which will be used by comsat the communication satellite corporation to beam television programs all over the world relaying them through an orbiting satellite its design was perfected with the use of nastran analysis nasa scientists took several years and a lot of money to develop the nastran computer system and now it's available to everyone within the united your st dollars and mine three million of them and now we're getting the dividends if you're a design analyst or engineer or manufacturer you can buy the whole program for fifteen hundred dollars if you're none of these and most of us are not you can simply reap the rewards of better design safer design more economical design in virtually every piece of major hardware made in the united states today in technical terms what nastran does is analyze organized elastic structures by finite elements now in our language that means that a computer programmed with nastran can tell you how much a bridge is going to flex or how much a helicopter blade will shimmy and it'll give you that information for any of a huge number of sample points in infinitely less time than the old testing techniques would require and best of all you can play with the design twist it bend it break it all on the computer and get it right before you start to build as the admin say you know it will get off the ground [Music] [Applause] [Music] the versatile helicopter a potential for good work that's being realized more and more each year but it also has in its elastic structure a potential for the shakes analyzing the design of each piece of a helicopter at a time and then putting it all together nastran can tell the engineers when rigidity is important and when flexibility is necessary cutting down on vibration is extremely important whether it's to provide a safer and more stable observation platform for police and fire surveillance [Music] to give the businessman a better ride or to increase the payload of the workhorse helicopters that are revolutionizing construction this nation's demands for electric power have been outstripping our ability to produce the big steam driven turbine continues to be the prime producer but in its design there are inherent vibration problems vibration which can cause loss of efficiency and sometimes disastrous explosions the giant blades turning from 1800 to 3600 rotations per minute are constantly buffeted by steam under very high pressure and temperature vibration can reach a dangerous level less vibration greater efficiency when these big turbines are designed nasa's structural analysis is now being used [Music] we are the world's champion consumers and one of the things we consume the most paper virtually all our paper starts out of course as wood [Music] converting logs into wood chips for paper pulp has to be done efficiently and economically if the cost of paper is to be kept at reasonable levels big logs pose big problems again the old concern vibration a 30-foot log over two feet in diameter about 10 seconds and it becomes tiny chips of wood the huge chipper wheels which hold the blades weigh several tons and rotate at extremely high speed if one of them gets out of balance the chipper room is not a safe place to be there were some problems with design when nasa's structural analysis program was made available to the public it solved the problems now the logs flow in and the chips fly out [Music] it was said earlier that nastran could analyze the design of anything that shakes rattles or rolls why not railroads [Music] railroad tracks and the bed which supports them do not seem to be particularly elastic until the train runs over them a good road bed can make the difference smoother ride greater economy higher speeds [Music] nastran has been put to work on the problem by the department of transportation ribbons of steel would stretch horizontally across the land or steel which stretches into the sky each job each design has its own particular problems with skyscrapers wind is a very real concern hundreds of feet taller than the washington monument a new giant will rise at this spot in chicago just south of the hancock building the vortices of the winds whipping around the hancock building will give it a terrific wallop how much can it take how much can the residents accept within assured limits of safety and still be comfortable [Music] nastran is now being used to solve some of these problems long before the first footing is poured as a result there will be better design less cost greater utility and comfort always man has achieved and in that achievement not knowing the wide limits were the complete effect of his achievements so it has been with mastram nasa structural analysis [Music] another reaching toward the stars has broadened the horizons here on earth [Music] wow that's so great um you know i certainly love films that uh talk about the uh i might need some more coffee i think that's what the problem is um about the windfall from space the dividend from uh space technology and space exploration but then have it hosted by rod serling man it just puts it over the top so great i'm happy that uh you guys got to watch that um anyways i got another film set up on the uh scanner again i don't know the title uh we're just gonna go with korean steam power footage all right enjoy [Music] in the raising of steel koreans proved agile and sure-footed but their american friends made certain that they were ever mindful of good safety practice by the end of april the steel work at tongue and re was far advanced [Music] over at samchok on the east side of the korean peninsula severe winter conditions had necessitated the postponement of construction until the spring of 1955. samchuk was a small port and manufacturing center until the coming of bechtel engineers and construction men the local people had had little contact with americans at first the children ran away from them in fright or shyness soon however friendliness won out samchok citizens were treated to the spectacle of a helicopter shortly after the middle of may it carried korean and american officials who came to participate in a ceremony plant was to occupy a portion of the site of a chemical factory destroyed by gunfire a couple of existing tanks were salvaged for oil storage barracks similar to those at the other camps were erected at samchok and were ready for occupancy before the end of june in coordinating construction of the three widely separated plants radio telephone communication was invaluable field managers and superintendents went on the air twice daily or often to keep one another informed it was at this time that a special chapter opened in the history of the project from the bondo building where pacific bechtel corporation had its administrative office in downtown seoul a chartered bus left for the airport the passengers were made by a representative of their government they had been recruited for training in the united states in the highly technical phases of modern steam power plant operation so that eventually the koreans landed in san francisco on june 19 1955. no time was lost for the very next day they embarked on the first stage of their program a 12 weeks course in the classrooms and laboratories of the university of california at berkeley most of them were graduates of engineering schools in korea and a few had had some experience as power plant operators the course would implement their basic technology a curriculum was conceived by bechtel and developed and carried out by the university with a selected group of instructors the course included intensive instruction in english mathematics physics chemistry thermodynamics electrical machinery and circuits and heat power laboratory work while the prospective operators were studying at berkeley their plants in korea were taking shape at tongue and reed the raising of the steam drum for the boiler was a delicate task for the rigging crew at masan the turbine was set and the generator followed being jacked up and cripped to its floor level the structural steel work was being finished up and bricklayers were busy on the walls at samchok by september the steel framework of the last of the three plants to be started was rising imposingly above the harbor by this time the korean operators were entering the second phase of their training program in america this was to spend four months gaining practical experience in big steam electric power plants of the pacific gas and electric company in the san francisco bay area at ty and re october 11 was a memorable day a big black limousine rolled into the yard its license plate was a very special one the car brought a gentleman whose finest belied his 80 years it was his excellency singhman reed president of the republic of korea accompanied by the united states ambassador and other dignitaries mr ree was paying a formal visit to see how things were getting on he was pleased to find that progress was ahead of schedule less than a month later one of the most dramatic operations in the construction of the tongan and replant was performed although it was a routine one for veteran riggers it was the raising of the 175 foot stack nine and a half feet in diameter and weighing 50 tons once the column had reached a vertical position it had to be carried to its solid concrete foundation and lowered ever so delicately over its anchor bolts the stacks at massan and its hamchak were similarly raised the construction crews endured extremes of weather there were prolonged heavy rains there was frost the han river at tongue and ree was frozen solidly in december any americans at the power plant who had been dreaming about a white christmas had their dreams abundantly fulfilled [Music] on christmas day the construction men gave a party for all the children of tongan re village and there were hundreds of them [Music] back in the united states the korean operators began the third and last phase of their program early in january 1956 with a tour of big steam electric power plants and manufacturing centers from which came the principal equipment being installed at tongue and ree maasan and samchuck for more than a month they visited plants in california illinois tennessee and massachusetts they saw transformers and switch gear super heaters and coal pulverizing equipment boilers turbines and instruments everywhere they went they were made welcome and given detailed explanations of the construction operation and maintenance of the types of equipment with which they would soon be working they managed to get in a bit of sightseeing too to manhattan their program was climaxed by a banquet in san francisco [Music] each operator received a certificate after nearly eight months in the united states the 42 koreans headed for their homeland [Music] the plants in korea had now taken on the look of completion the entire installation at samchok had reached final shape and was ready to be tested at the maasan site in the course of a year a twin unit plant had arisen dominating the shoreline and at tongan re the new plant eclipsed the old one the engineers flying back from san francisco reached tung and re just in time to witness a significant event which was reported in the usis newsreel the minister accompanied by many other dignitaries came to the plant officially to light the boiler fire the same operation was carried out the following okay so this is interesting um no title but this shares something with the film that we showed yesterday which is about canadian pipeline building by the bechtel corporation and i did some research i'm not finding the titles specifically for either film but i am finding uh notes in uh online resources like worldcat copyright.gov to tell me that bechdel did make films uh of a similar nature like they would have a film that was about a specific project that they did they did some in the 70s but i'm not finding about ones in the 80s so fascinating absolutely fascinating you know what else is fascinating is clouds what makes a cloud enjoy makes the wind blow uh-oh the air that surrounds the earth is almost always moving air itself is invisible what we see is not moving air but things being moved by the air if we light a smoke bomb on this beach we will be able to observe how the air here is moving [Applause] the smoke indicates that air is moving from the ocean toward the land since it takes a force to make air move some invisible force must be making the air over this beach move [Applause] what is this invisible force here in the laboratory we can find some clues as to what causes wind to blow this is a plastic box filled with the same air that's in the room a piece of rubber with a handle attached to it is stretched across the airtight lid at this end of the box is an open valve and a source of smoke watch what happens when we press down on the lid air moves out of the box into the room here are a couple of simple pressure gauges any pressure on the rubber cover can be read on the scale the gauges show that there is no more pressure in the box than there is in the room now let's close the valve so that no air can enter or leave the box when the rubber lid is pressed down the gauges indicate that the air pressure inside the box is higher than the air pressure outside the box what will happen if we open the valve the air pressure inside the box is again equal to the air pressure outside now let's close the valve look what happens to the air pressure inside the box why is it low when the rubber lid is pulled up the volume inside the box increases and since no air can enter the box the air inside the box must expand to fill up the increased space the air pressure in the box lower than the air pressure outside what do you think will happen when we open the valve as before air flows from a region of higher pressure to a region of lower pressure could it be the differences in air pressure cause natural winds to blow [Applause] this is a barometer a sensitive instrument for measuring very small changes in air pressure when the small needle is centered the large needle indicates the air pressure in millibars the air pressure on the beach right now is 1013 millibars 20 miles out from the beach at the same moment the air pressure is 1014 millibars [Applause] and 20 miles in land at the same moment the sea level air pressure is 1012 millibars so as we might have expected the wind is blowing from a region of higher pressure to a region of lower pressure why is the air pressure over the water higher than the air pressure over the land here is a sealed plastic box in which we can simulate the conditions we found at the beach this tray of water represents the ocean the temperature of the air over the water is 72 degrees this tray of dark soil represents the land the temperature of the air over the soil is also 72 degrees the smoke plume shows that under these conditions the air in the box is not moving now let's repeat the experiment under conditions more like those at the beach this lamp like the sun will supply heat energy to the water and soil after 15 minutes the temperature of the air over the soil has risen from 72 degrees to 95 degrees the air over the water however has risen to only 80 degrees this difference in temperature rise indicates that soil heats up more readily than water as a result the air over the soil becomes warmer than the air over the water now a current of air is moving from the water toward the soil you remember at the beach the wind was also blowing from the water to the land the air here is behaving just as the air in the box does and notice something else the warmer air is rising and the cooler air is falling this discovery that a local wind is part of a larger circulation of air raises still another question why does warmer air rise while cooler air sinks here are two identical flasks they contain exactly the same amounts of air and therefore weigh the same the temperature of the air in both flasks is the same a little over 72 degrees [Applause] watch what happens when we heat up the air in the flask the heat causes the air in the flask to expand and some of it escapes into the balloon so now the flask we heated weighs less than the other flask when the air in the flask was heated it expanded and became less dense the scale shows that the less dense air is lighter now we have a clue to what happens when we apply heat to the water and soil in the box as the air over the soil becomes warmer it becomes less dense and lighter than the air over the water so the cooler heavier air over the water sinks down flows over to the other side of the box and pushes the warmer air upward the horizontal flow of air between two places is what we call wind we saw earlier that when there is a wind at the beach there is a difference between the air pressure over the ocean and the air pressure over the land let's see if there's a corresponding difference in air temperature at these two locations first let's take a temperature reading in the boat the air temperature over the ocean is close to 62 degrees and inland the temperature is almost 74 degrees now we have a more complete picture of the local atmospheric conditions over the ocean the cooler air being heavier exerts a higher pressure than the warmer lighter air does over the land the wind blows from an area of higher pressure to an area of lower pressure this onshore breeze or breeze from the ocean toward the land is a normal daytime condition at the beach in sunny weather however you know from your own observations that winds frequently change speed and direction for example a smoke bomb set off a few days later at the same beach at the same time of day indicates the wind direction has changed it is obviously blowing out over the ocean [Applause] at the same time a giant cloud of dust is blowing in the same direction out to sea why did the wind change direction where is the cloud of dust coming from 40 miles inland is a scene that resembles a giant forest fire however what appears to be smoke is actually loose silt and dust being picked up and carried away by strong winds from what we have learned about winds we would guess that there must be a mass of cold heavy air somewhere forcing the wind to blow in this manner let's take some temperature and pressure measurements and plot a simplified weather map this is where the dust is being picked up and carried away here is the beach where we set off the smoke bomb and saw the cloud of dust moving seaward the direction of the wind is obvious on a weather ship here the temperature is 69 degrees and the air pressure is 1014 millibars at a weather station here the temperature is 50 degrees and the air pressure is 1029 millibars and at a weather station here in utah the temperature is 24 degrees and the air pressure is 1032 millibars cold heavy air on the high plateau flows downhill toward the low coastal plains where the air is warmer and the pressure is lower the result of this combination of conditions is that the air flows fast enough to move large amounts of sand and dust a cloud of dust is being blown out over the ocean and our smoke plume is being blown out to sea instead of inland as it would be on a normal sunny day local pressure conditions on the beach have been overwhelmed by a cold heavy air mass flowing in from the northeast [Applause] near the poles of the earth the sun does not shine at all part of the year when it does shine it is always low in the sky even at midday furthermore the snow and ice reflect much of the sun's heat so it's cold up here near the equator the sun shines every day of the year at midday it is always high in the sky and the dark ground absorbs much of its energy so it is usually hot down here the air is always being cooled in some places and warmed in others half of the earth is always being warmed by the sun while the other half is in shadow and of course the earth is always turning it is no wonder then that the air around the earth is constantly moving it is even possible that the moving air holding up this kite in california has traveled all the way down from the polar regions can you explain how this could happen and where
