foreign right hey I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks 16 millimeter lunch or we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was a home movie um from The Collector Albert Stagg based in Massachusetts who uh has been buying from estate sales home movies and that one was a fishing trip pretty elaborate one uh actually going out in the middle of nowhere and that is very typical of fishing trips from that time period being late 40s 50s 60s um first they should kind of show getting there and they show fishing and then there's a lot of hijinks a lot of hijinks usually involving alcohol and occasionally uh male nudity um quite a few films I've seen involve male nudity um because you know you're out in the middle of nowhere and uh men can very easily become eight-year-olds in that setting all right uh time for a drug attack foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] so [Music] um [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] run run [Applause] [Music] away [Music] foreign [Music] laughs [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] oh my gosh I love showing this film and the comments um it's like what is going on like why is it just a bunch of still images like what is the point of this and this again was made by Lockheed Aviation it's part of a baffling series of films that they put out uh about drugs but kind of like weird like this is part of I guess a unit that they would show the films and you know uh old radios found some information about the whole thing and there was a game and all this but yeah it's it's still baffling when I compare it to other um things and why Lockheed Aviation did it my guess is that they were becoming um they were dealing with with it in their their factories either uh they were dealing with drug use amongst employees or employees who had kids that were dealing with drug use and so they felt like they had to address it and then they're like we can sell this um this was scanned by somebody else who didn't quite scan it right so um I I um I still like the footage and but the music is going to make you nauseous so enjoy braised welding [Music] [Applause] phrase welding is simply the joining together of two pieces of metal by melting bronze Rod into the heated joint most of your repair jobs can be done by braised welding it's a fast easy way to do repairs or to make things out of metal in braised welding only the bronze Rod is melted the molten bronze forms a puddle which is controlled by the flame as the puddle is moved along the joint more bronze is melted into it from the rod a flux is used to remove impurities when clean metal is kept at the proper temperature and flux is added the bronze melts and spreads evenly over the heated surface this is called tinning and tinning is the most important part of braised welding good tinning is a combination of correct heat and mechanical and chemical cleaning let's see how tinning works we'll do this by depositing bronze on a flat plate which first has been made mechanically clean by scrubbing with steel wool or a wire brush to make the metal chemically clean we'll use a braised welding flux on the rod first we heat the metal when it just begins to turn red We Touch flux dipped Rod to it see how the bronze melts and flows evenly over the heated area we move the puddle by moving the blowpipe heating the metal and melting the rod as we move along cleaning and fluxing are important to good tinning but so is proper temperature of the base metal here's what happens if the rod is applied before the plate is hot enough notice how the bronze melts off in drops and builds up instead of spreading out if the plate is too hot the bronze boils and runs to the edge of the heated area it behaves like water on a hot stove that white smoke is zinc being burned out spoiling the strength of the bronze now how about you're trying to braise well you can start by welding two steel plates together these are 1 8 inch thick both plates have been cleaned along the budding edges and for an inch or so on the top this cleaning is important any area to be braise welded must be free of dirt rust or oil before you start light your blowpipe and adjust the flame to neutral then add a little oxygen to produce a slightly oxidizing Flame I'll watch over your shoulder while you work first make a tack weld at each end to hold the plates in position heat the metal to a dull red warm the end of the welding rod and dip it in flux touch the rod to the heated metal it will melt and flow evenly over the surface now go back to the right end play the flame in small circles over a spot the size of a quarter melt the surface of the tack weld and the rod and begin moving the puddle to the left the rear of the puddle will harden As you move along everyone finds in the beginning that the hot end of the rod will stick now and then if it is too close to the edge of the puddle don't try to yank it Loose just turn the flame on it and melt it free when all the flux on the rod is gone dip the rod into the flux again fill in between the edges of the plates and build a bead about 1 8 of an inch above the surface spread a thin coating of bronze down in between the edges and back about 3 8 of an inch on each side point the flame along the line of weld in this position the plane preheats the metal ahead of the puddle that's about all there is to it proper tinning is about 90 percent of making a good braised weld now you're ready to practice welding heavier metal notice that the edges of these pieces have been ground at an angle to form a v this V gives the bronze a larger surface to hold and the bronze can get right down to the bottom of the joint the weld area has been thoroughly cleaned including the top of the plates about an inch back from the V this time we'll use an oxwell flux coated Rod it's more convenient you don't have to dip this rod in the flux can for this job we'll need a larger tip on the blowpipe and we'll also use a welding rod one size larger braised welding is always done at the same temperature but thicker metal requires a greater volume of heat don't forget to add oxygen to the neutral Flame the inner cone will be slightly shorter Metals up to 1 8 of an inch can be welded in one pass heavier Metals require two or more passes on this weld you should use three passes start as before by making a tack weld at each end of the plates since heavier Metals require more welding heat it's a good idea to preheat them slightly before welding play the blowpipe along the V from end to end in a long weld for a foot or so keep the inner cone of the flame one half to three quarters of an inch above the top surface of the plate then heat the area at the starting point until it begins to turn red on this first pass let the bronze flow onto the surface and Tin the V halfway up each side for a distance of about three inches when the metal starts to Tin add welding rod into the puddle just as you did in the last weld move the blowpipe forward slowly keep the rod and blowpipe in motion the rod passing through the outer envelope of the flame the rod will melt too fast if it's in the center of the flame in thick metal the weld is made in layers one pass for each layer after tinning for about three inches go back and make a second pass over the first one here's what we mean by building up wells in passes or layers the first pass should fill the base of the V completely and carry about halfway up each side the shape of the top of the weld metal in this first pass should curve down toward the center on the second pass the V should be filled to the top of each side and have about the same shape on top as the first pass did the final pass extends above the surfaces of the plates and slightly Beyond The V out onto the top surface now let's take a look through the side of the plate the first pass is laid down for a short distance and then the second pass is laid down on top of it for only a part of the distance the third pass is still shorter so that we have a step effect now we go back to the first pass and carry it along a few more inches the same with a second and third passes be sure to melt the first layer as you add more bronze so the two layers will be welded together tin the upper half of the v as you move along also tin the top surfaces a little beyond the bevel on both sides practice to get a smooth Easy Motion as you make the last pass keep the puddle smaller than before and build up the weld about 1 8 of an inch above the surface of the plate again be sure to melt the surface of the previous paths continue the world in the same way first tinning and then building up two or three inches at a time be sure to melt the bronze deposited in the previous Parts it should mix well with the rod you add as you practice you'll find that controlling the puddle becomes easy the hottest part of the flame is right at the tip of the inner bright cone the size of the puddle can be controlled by moving that hot spot closer to or away from the puddle surface the same is true of the rod don't forget to build up the last pass for additional strength make it a little higher than the surface of the plate and a little wider than the top of the V you can control the puddle better by changing the direction of the blowpipe when you reach the edge of the plate point it towards the finished well this prevents the molten bronze from flowing out of the open end let's clean it off with a wire brush well that looks pretty good it was easy wasn't it braised welding is easy and fast too this shows what a good braised weld looks like if we cut right through it there is a good bond between the bronze and the steel all the way to the bottom that's enough for today's lesson let's review the important points you've learned rust oil and dirt must be removed from the area to be welded to permit proper tinning bevel the edges of the metal when it is more than 1 8 of an inch thick if you don't have a flux covered Rod use plenty of flux so that the metal being welded will be chemically clean the weld area carefully you can tell when you've got the proper heat the bronze flows smoothly and evenly keep the flame and Rod in motion as you did today remount deposited bronze when making additional passes in thicker metal learn to control the puddle spend some time practicing you've been working today on steel but you'll find the same principles applied to the braised welding of other metals cast iron copper and nickel alloys or when you join dissimilar metals all of these parts were repaired or fabricated by braised welding foreign parts were easily repaired without disturbing the quality of the base metal this wheel had brakes in two Spokes and two Brakes in the rim now it's as good as new when you braze weld cast iron or copper use a welding tip two sizes larger than that specified in your welding tip metal thickness chart it will help keep the welding heat even be sure that you don't overheat cast iron just heat the metal to a dull Red glove this safety guard is one of the many things that can be made by braised welding four pieces of sheet steel were braise welded together and wire mesh tack welded to the edges of the frame this Christmas tree stand was made from a piece of pipe and steel plate a smaller size makes a good flux can holder this cylinder rack was made from used pipe and quarter inch steel rod nine out of 10 repairs in the shop or on the farm and many of the things you can make from metal can be braze welted it's the easiest way to join most medals just remember in all Bray's welding three important points have the metal clean use flux get good tinning [Music] oh wow wow yeah so that was uh the music and maybe you could hear it in some of the dialogue uh this was scanned on the Laser Graphics and it was using an optical sound head and what was happening was it recording the audio but the the speed of it was inconsistent so that's how you get that wow and flutter um our Laser Graphics actually uses a different way to read the sound uh and so it is it doesn't have that so there you go uh so behind me I have a film scanner uh that is not a Laser Graphics that is a Blackmagic syntel um Laser Graphics is better it has a better camera um it also has a warp gate so that if a film is Warped uh it will help keep it in focus but this is not bad especially because with the Laser Graphics I can't really scan and show you stuff live so that's what we're using and we're gonna watch and learn about the Knight of the squid enjoy so involved are the squid and they're undulating biological Act of their lives they appear to be totally oblivious to all else [Music] as the divers Ascend it is like moving through the strange underwater cyclotron [Music] as divers returned to Calypso with the first specimens of cross they know from long experience what lies ahead rivers on board have become observers of the behavior of life in the sea as such we are necessarily opportunists no matter what our planned destination or objective may be unfathomable way [Music] as the specimens Square are transferred to the ship's aquarium they revert for a split second to see form in the calm of topside the divers can now observe and detail the sea arrows Inky decoys and his pulsing jet power [Music] at 8 40 this morning I arrived but he playing at the Anchorage of calypso near an offshore island of the Southern California coastline I was anxious to obtain from Falco and the divers detailed eyewitness accounts of their initial encounter for the ciao spawning migration I was also eager to set into action a plan I developed on the plane to film for the first time in the wild the complete procreation cycle of the Seattle squid ow is immediately advised by the ship's captain that the nearby availability of Provisions will permit the ship to remain anchored where it is for an indefinite period of time cameras and Diving gear are checked out with an eye to a unique opportunity to obtain a rare film document for the study of marine biologists concerned with the reduction of squid stocks in some of the world Fisheries most of the 350 living varieties of the squid family constitute a vital Link in the end of seas food chain many open ocean fish and sea mammals depend heavily and sometimes exclusively on squid as their food staple over harvesting the squid may cause many irreversible changes in the Ecology of the sea and I cannot help figuring out the terrible damage a single net Hall could do here as the critical meeting begins [Music] by 8 PM the sea arrows sensitive to the ultraviolet rays of sunlight have returned to the upper Waters courtship has ended and mating has begun foreshadowing 72 consecutive hours of violence life and Desperation Cousteau then urges the divers to strive for individual close-ups of the mating action an almost impossible task in the swirling storm of squid Cousteau gives the go-ahead to commence filming before the night is over the eight divers will spend an aggregate of 16 hours in the swirling Maelstrom of the mating squids they will shoot one mile of film and consume 36 tanks of compressed air and in the darkness of the sea they will be witness to sudden death [Music] ordinarily squids move and maneuver by the use of swimming fins located on the sides of their fusiform buddies their instantaneous jet propulsion potential is mainly used when chasing food or escaping enemies the male solver also use jet action in The Mating process to fiercely compete for egg ripe females [Music] the ratio of males to females all an average age oilism is common often and the abandoned frenzy frantic males will mistakenly attempt to couple with other males this often leads to indignant violence [Music] mainly for camouflage all squid have the capability to change their color to many Exquisite hues one of the most striking manifestations of the mating Act is the blushing of the males at his greatest point of excitement waves of maroon sweep over his head and arms until he releases the female from his urgent employees [Music] 110 feet down burgeoning females have already begun to litter the sea floor with gelatinous egg cases during the next three days every female will lay 10 to 20 cylindrical egg capsules each containing on the average 100 individual eggs to prevent sea currents from carrying the egg cases away from the temperate Waters the females painstakingly anchor the sticky filament of each capsule to seaflora or bottom outcroppings ordinarily most of the fastidious females arrange their egg strands into communal bouquets resembling buoyancy chrysanthemums during their strenuous labels the females continue to welcome the attentions of males or even if the males spilled their adhesive milk in the water flowing around the egg clusters the sperm will penetrate the steel soft capsules and the Mystery of Life Will begin [Music] thank you [Music] having reached the limits of their diving time the camera teams are forced to call it the night as they slowly move up through the darkness to their first decompression level they intuitively sense the shadowy presence of death perhaps attracted by the grappling of the mating squid as they are by the helpless thrashing of wounded sea animals the Sharks move in [Music] foreign propelled squids are among the fastest creatures in the sea and for their size certainly the most elusive what a lamentable irony that they fall victims to jackals of the sea at the precise moment they join in vulnerable life-producing amboys [Music] we have invited on both Calypso Miss June linstead she is an invertebrate zoologist with the University of Southern California Marine biological Laboratory intrigued by our filming of the Cross she has agreed to share her knowledge with us notice the A-Arms the two tentacles and the head with its almost human eyes below the eye is the jet-like funnel and the rest of the body is covered by a muscular mantle The Mating male usually approaches the female from below and to the side then using especially adapted arm he transfers to the female from 20 to 40 sperm packets the actual transfer of sperm packets takes place so fast that only by special photography can the action be seen in detail for example here you see the male holding the female and with one arm reach back to the opening of his funnel there the tip of his arm curls around an instantly extruded sheath of sperm packets the iron then swings forward to deposit the self-ejaculating sperm packets close to the female oviduct which is located within the mantle cavity the male May repeat this action several times before releasing his hold upon the female the ory here in an extreme close-up of the action you can see clearly the arm of the male grasping a compact bundle of spermatophores all of uniform size each spermatophore contains countless microscopic spermatozoa next explains to Falco that the female eggs are thus uniquely fertilized internally but in addition excess inactives spermatozoa are stored in a reservoir by the female four released during the actual egg laying period one of Nature's many Fail-Safe methods for perpetuating the species eggs are produced in the ovary and as they pass through the oviduct the protective egg case is formed around them the whole mass is then extruded through the funnel opening and not without considerable exertion the anchor filament emerges from the funnel first oh but when the egg case is completely free of the funnel the capsule is moved backward until the end of the anchor can be held in the tips of the female's arm she's then prepared to attach the egg case securely to the sea floor this is the moment just before the permeable jelly of the capsule begins to harden when the female May diffuse some of her reservoirs for Madison over the surface of the egg case after a short rest period the female squid will repeat this egg laying process at regular intervals throughout the three to four day spawning period the long night of an entire generation of sea arrows is drawing to a close [Music] foreign [Music] on the fifth day our divers report that the meeting has come to an end but desponing is finished that all is quiet here save for the lingering of an occasional cro all others are dead 20 million tiny corpses are thrown across the wide underwater planes that lead to the Sea World Beyond the CEOs have kept their appointment in Samoa we have decided to remain at the cro spawning grounds for the next month the time it will take for the incubation and hatching of the baby squids every few days ounce of egg capsules for microscopic examination about calypso Cousteau also has the under as the embryo is within grow the elastic egg cases will stretch ultimately expanding to five times their original volume at the moment of hatching a white chiffon-like sponge contrasts a sharply with the sea fungus blossoming rapidly on the organic egg cases this distasteful fungal it goes combined with the tensioning of the capsules provides for the evolving squid nearly Total Protection from possible bottom feeding predators [Music] the ion stomach starfish is actually the only known predator of the baby squids before they're born but it takes nearly three to four days for the starfish to digest the Levi capsules so they probably resort to the squid eggs only when there is no other easily available food supply foreign [Music] on the 24th day of incubation Cousteau decides to dissect one of the sea Arrow egg cases for microscopic examination the plasticity of the capsule resists even the scalpel's fine Edge because more specialized instruments are accessible at nearby Shore facilities crew members of calypso accept Miss June lindsted's invitation to visit her Laboratory there with the aid of a high-powered profile projector they will be able to observe in my new detail the complete development of the sea Arrow embryo here we have Stripped Away most of the egg Castle to show the cellophane-like membrane which in this case contain 10 day old embryos as you can see the individual eggs are tightly packed together but there Still Remains ample room inside each for the growth and movement of the embryo oh my God for a more detailed view of the embryo at this age they must be removed from detergent corion three bulges Mark the embryo at this stage the uppermost bulge will become the mantle and most of the internal organs the arms of the squid are visible below the two lateral bulges and these bulges will become the eyes and part of the brain the largest mass is the embryo's external yolk sac in the next several views you can observe the embryos as they feed upon the egg Stacks something like a baby drinking milk from a bottle the yolks contains all the nourishment needed by the embryo and generally it is used up before hatching although sometimes squids May hatch with a residue yolk sack still present 24 day old embryos is nearly ready to hatch you can easily see the suckers on his arms around the nearly depleted yolk sack yes the eyes are now fully functional and I might add squid style is very similar in both structure and function to the human eye Miss linstead then details the anatomy of the Squid's flashing chromatophoys and speculates on their possible use as schooling beacons in the dark or perhaps as luminescent lures for ingenuous prey she then describes the violent action of the corian-contained embryo when they are ready to leave the security of their tiny selves for the risks and Adventures of the sea in hatching the embryo uses a special organ located just between its two fins this y-shaped protrusion is used to secrete enzymes which digest away a portion of the chorionic membrane at the same time this organ pulsates and is used mechanically to drill a perforation in the Corian wall it is through this hole that the embryo first uses the power of its jet action to escape from the egg upon hatching the 1 8 inch baby squids are instantly hyperactive as you can see here and curiously enough sometimes the First Act of a newly hatched squid is a defensive one the releasing of a cloud of ink into the water well to him that's the cloud of ink and who knows maybe it's just enough to save him from becoming a snack for a hungry two-inch mackerel twenty percent of every new CEO generation dies before hatching largely because of changes in the nursery environment [Music] fifty percent of the live bone are eaten by predators in the first week of their lives the survivors are the only hope of their species so buried in their genes liable dive to populate the oceans of the world they like all the ideas of Life on this planet including man will go forth blindly and compulsively to inherit the earth this feeble pulsing infant dance of life multiplied billions of times over his birthday Prelude to their massive invasion of the sea still Returns His divers to the site of the sea Arrow's spawning grounds visibility excellent temperature 61 degrees activity negligible here an instant ago where an older generation of sea arrows had gathered itself into a vast multitude mated gave birth to a new generation and died there is nothing but this much we do know in spite of the perils and Hazards of the Squid's Life In The Deep the sea hours will return and in countless unknown shelter Bays they will relive as they must their tragic ancestral light of the sea on some other night of the squid [Music] [Music] I wasn't sure if that was an official National Geographic um saw that it was warper Productions wallpaper Productions did a lot of stuff for CBS um and including well and then they also did uh Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory uh but fascinating that film obviously was shown entirely too many times by people who didn't know what they were doing um as it was scratched and had all sorts of problems but they had our good friend Jacques had a good friend rod um and it had a lot of Squid sex so Thumbs Up Everybody um thanks for tuning in today so we always love when you watch and comment and there were some lulus in there in the comments so thank you for that let's see uh you can show how much you appreciate what we do by hitting the Thumbs Up Button by hitting the like button by hitting the subscribe button you can also give us a little bit of cash via the super thanks um button feature you can also buy us coffee by going to ko-fi.com avgeeks or go into uh patreon.com avgeeks that will help us buy things like trash cans trash cans um surprisingly well not surprisingly there's a lot of stuff that is related to uh 60 millimeter films old stuff that needs to be thrown away so there's all this these little gigas and pieces of tape and this awesome thing I don't know if I showed this off before the inspected electronically um sticker that was often pasted on films that were inspected by a RTI film inspector so that you knew that it was ready to be rented out or lent out somebody had gone through and inspected it but anyways all that stuff just ends up on the floor which drives my assistance crazy so I bought some trash cans today and that's thanks to you guys oh you can also go to tick tock.com av.geeks uh to see a little short form clips of films including ones that for some reason got super excited uh people like 3000 views for some reason it's in a film about shopping and Crunchies like maybe you can go and watch and figure out why all right join us tomorrow we'll watch some more films unless the upcoming thunderstorm takes us out uh we will see you soon take care foreign
