Gentlemen, we're delighted to have you with us. We're glad so many of you could attend this little meeting. And I can only say we want to do everything we can to make it worth your while and to let you know you're welcome. [Music] I'm sure you know in general what this session is all about. We're going to talk business, yours and ours, and we plan to stay on the track, stick to our subject. Your time is valuable and we don't want to waste it on anything that doesn't apply directly to our jobs. So to that extent, maybe this meeting will be a little bit different. >> You dare different unforgettable in the variety of things you won't see such as gorgeous girls, pulse robbing action, exotic scenery, sidplitting comedy. gripping suspense. None of that. Nothing irrelevant. Just interesting stuff. All business. >> We're all in business together because whatever our individual jobs may be, they all involve Caterpillar and to motor equipment. So all of us, we as suppliers and you as users have a common objective to see that our equipment delivers all the performance it was built to deliver all the time. And it takes all of us together to reach that objective. If we do reach our objective, we all stand to gain. If you're an owner, getting full value from your equipment means lower costs and more profit. If you're a job superintendent or shop foreman, your return is greater production and the assurance of machine availability when it comes to a showdown. If you're a mechanic, your stake in this is ease of maintenance, minimum downtime, fewer repair headaches. As an operator, your interest is greater ease of operation, more comfort, and the kind of response you want at the controls. So whatever job or jobs you do, you have a personal stake in getting full value from every Caterpillar machine because that automatically makes your job easier, more secure, more profitable, and safer. Another thing it seems to me all of us here have in common. We're all professionals. Operator, owner, mechanic, superintendent, foreman. It doesn't matter which. The very fact you're here shows you have a professional attitude toward your work. You take pride in your job and how it's done. And we take the same professional pride at our job or we wouldn't be putting on this meeting. So, we all do share the same interest and attitudes in our work. We talk the same language and as professionals we all know this can be a rough business. [Music] [Applause] Our equipment has to work under all conditions. It has to be able to meet whatever demands this fastmoving, speeded up age of ours puts on it. [Music] But in spite of this, how can we make sure we get the utmost out of our CAT equipment day in day out, year after year? That's what we're here to talk about. How to hit that target. Now, of course, on the job reliability has to start with design, engineering, and manufacturer. The basic quality that's built into a machine. And that's what we have to offer. A better machine to begin with, built that way by Caterpillar. But that's not all. Something else just as important goes with that CAT machine or engine. It's what we call product support. The services, facilities, parts, technical assistance, knowhow, all the backup it takes to keep that machine on the job at peak efficiency. We have to furnish all that. And we do. And why? Because no machine, no matter how well made, can perform right for very long without the support of adequate maintenance. Good maintenance is essential to reliability. It pays off in lower operating cost, higher productivity, and greater resale value at trade-in time. It prevents a good many of the troubles that go with our business. So, our responsibility as we see it is to pass along to you the best maintenance practices as recommended by Caterpillar and to keep you informed of improvements and advances as they're made. In other words, whatever help you need to make your maintenance programs, methods, and procedures more effective. Just between us, when an owner does get full production, full value from his cat equipment, he's pretty likely to make the money and get the jobs that will put him in the market for more new equipment. And when he buys, chances are he'll buy Caterpillar again, no matter how hard our competitors work on him. And let's admit, our competitors have some pretty good salesman. >> I consider myself a Cracker Jackack salesman, but I can't sell international harvester equipment for beans. But of course, there's more to this whole area of maintenance than regular day-to-day programs. In this business, you never know what problems are going to arise. [Applause] [Music] [Music] I've always said those operators are no dummies, but >> now I don't know. >> The only thing sure is that any machine used hard enough to make a profit has to have replacement parts and occasional repairs. [Music] But it's our job to minimize the cost and time and money of parts replacements and repairs. So, we want to keep you up to date on all the facts about Caterpillar made parts and how new developments can boost production or lower cost per hour. And on the subject of necessary repairs, we want you to know the alternatives open to you. whether to do it yourself or use our facilities. You should know about the capabilities of our shop and you should know about some other special services we offer. Custom track service, parts exchange service, engine rebuilding, and so on, as well as the new methods and diagnostic equipment we use to inspect your machines. And speaking of inspection, some of you may be interested in the idea of service contracts as a way of stabilizing costs and controlling machine availability. All these things are part of the whole broad subject of equipment maintenance. And I don't have to tell you, there's a lot involved in it in this matter of making sure our equipment stays on the job and performs as it was designed and built to do. A lot involved. But there's a lot at stake, too, for all of us. Not the least of which is our jobs, which is what this meeting is all about. So again, gentlemen, we want to welcome you and uh as a special service for anyone who may have dozed off. And now let's throw some light on our subject. Well, gentlemen, they tell me it's time to wrap up this session, and that's what I'm back here to do. We certainly hope you found it worth your while, and that you'll decide to come back again. I showed that yesterday and we realized uh that my Wi-Fi router was flaking out and uh was dropping frames like crazy. And so what it meant was that there was lots of pauses. Uh even though the audio was fine, the visuals were being paused. Uh, which is frustrating because that film has lots of short, quick, goofy edits and so I reaired that even though it has that regrettable ending. Um, but that yeah, that's straight up Calvin Productions. Um, so very goofy, probably late60s. I have not been able to find any date on it at all in any of the paperwork. Uh, this is part of the Prellinger archive. They scanned this recently. They got a bunch of uh Calvin films and outtakes. Um and that was black and white. That was um we didn't make it black and white. Uh it's was origin originated in black and white. Although there might be a color print of it somewhere, but um they haven't found it yet. Okay, so um let's get started. Uh I had my interns uh pull some films and we scanned them yesterday. So, here is uh what they picked. Uh this is Japan, the land, and the people. Enjoy. [Music] [Music] [Music] on the streets of modern Japan. Western style crowing is common. [Music] The traditional ankle length kimono of old Japan is not often seen. [Music] Everywhere there is bold evidence of change and signs of the past. [Music] Japan is an iron nation. The main islands are Hokkaido, Honu, Shikoku, and Kyu. The islands are bordered by the Sea of Japan and the Pacific Ocean. Tokyo, the modern capital of Japan, is on the island of Honshu. The land area of Japan is about 143,000 square miles. less area than the state of California. And yet, Japan supports a population of over 100 million, about half the population of the United States. Japan extends from the 31st to the 45th parallel, corresponding to the latitude between the state of Oregon and lower California. This helps explain why each of the islands has a different climate. Hyu, the southernmost island, is warm, subtropical. The northern island of Hokkaido has long, cold winters and much snow. Winter sports are popular here. Japan is a mountainous country. Actually, the islands were formed by the tops of undersea mountains. Mount Fuji, a most famous landmark for tourists and poets, was once an active volcano. It now rests in tranquility. Japan still has active volcanoes, reminders of the great natural forces which form the islands. These natural forces are at work today producing earthquakes and tsunamis, grade seismic waves caused by seaquakes and underwater volcanoes. Seismographs are used by scientists to monitor movements in the earth's crust. The scientists help warn the people of Japan of coming earthquakes and tsunamis. Throughout Japan, the mountain sides are covered with forests. [Music] The trees supply rumber and wood pulp used in making paper and synthetic fibers for the textile industry. Mountains, streams, and rivers are controlled to generate electric power. Power for large cities and for small agricultural communities. [Music] A farmer working on his small hillside farm uses modern machinery to help improve his crop yield. >> Mechanized farm implements are used on large flatland farms where the land is easier to work. Chemical fertilizers help improve crop yields. [Music] Rice, the staple of Japan's diet, is grown on over half the farmland. [Music] >> Modern farm machinery is used on the flat lands where most of the rice and other grains are grown. The use of machinery has eliminated the need for many farm workers. [Music] >> In the last 20 years, technology, the use of machines, has caused a sharp decline in farm population. Vegetables are also grown on the flatland farms. Tea, a favorite beverage, is an important crop. Traditionally, trees are harvested by hand. >> Japan also has many orchards which like farms have been modernized. [Music] [Music] Trucks bring crops to the villages and towns. In the villages, the old traditional farm houses with thatched roofs are being replaced by houses of modern design with roofs of brightly colored tile on the outside and modern conveniences on the inside. Because of modern technology, many young people have left the farms to seek factory jobs in the cities. [Music] Fish supply most of the protein in the Japanese diet. This island nation has one of the world's largest and most modern fishing fleets. Each year from nearby coastal waters, Japanese fishermen take millions of tons of fish. Herring, mackerel, sadines. In deep waters of the Pacific Ocean, fishermen go after tuna. [Music] On huge ships known as frothing factories, tuna and other seafood are cleaned, processed, and packaged. >> Seaweed is harvested in coastal waters. It is an important part of the Japanese diet. So, not much seaweed is for export. Other sea products are exported like pearls, both natural and cultured. Pearls are taken from oyster beds along Japan's coast. [Music] Pearls have long been in demand in Japan and are a major export. Many aspects of modern Japanese life have followed western patterns. The government for example and education. Many subjects are the same as those taught in schools of the west. But learning how to read and write takes longer. Japan is a difficult language with many characters. In Japan, students have to go to school for 9 years. The government pays most of the expense. Outside of school, students enjoy many imported recreations and sports. Basearu baseball is the most popular sport. [Music] Soccer is also popular. Of course, judo, a native Japanese sport, is a traditional favorite. [Music] Japanese youngsters enjoy other imported entertainments. [Music] [Music] Westernization is most clearly shown in Japan's modern industries. [Music] Within the last 20 years, Japan increased her export sixfold. [Music] In order to manufacture Finnish products, Japan needs a constant supply of imports. [Music] Iron ore is one of the major imports. Iron is used to make steel. [Music] Improving on western technology, Japan has become one of the world's leading steel makers. [Music] Theor is important to the ship building industry. Kobe, Yokohama, and Osaka produce some of the world's most advanced ships, huge oil tankers, and specialized vessels for carrying autos. Japan's automakers have a worldwide market. The auto industry is based on quality control and careful industrial planning and marketing. Careful marketing has also brought success to the electronics industry. Transistorized radios and other electronic products have sold tremendously in world markets. [Music] Japan's manufacturers have also captured worldwide markets in optical goods. Highquality cameras present stiff competition for their westernade counterparts. The Japanese have also become leaders in the chemical industry. Japan's industries are carefully directed into areas that promise continued economic growth. As in other industrial nations, the cities of Japan are overcrowded. Overcrowding has caused serious housing shortages. To cope with this, Japan is building new housing, especially apartment buildings. But there are other problems. Pollution. Japan now has laws regulating industrial wastes and exhaust fumes from automobiles. Trains offer one alternative to auto pollution. Japan has an extensive government-owned railroad system. Some of the fastest and most modern trains in the world. The Tokaido line carries passengers between Tokyo and Osaka almost 350 mi in about 3 hours. But some people in Japan believe that speed is a mixed blessing. They feel that their modern technological nation is moving too quickly into the future. [Music] >> Can the people retain a harmony with nature? >> What of their past? What place has ancient tradition in the future of Japan? [Music] So that's in honor of my nephew Nate, who's been on this show many times over the Uh he's in Japan hanging out being a 20-some year old um for a couple of weeks and I'm incredibly jealous. Incredibly jealous. All right. This next film comes to us from 1971 and it actually says in the title uh that it's from the 70s. It's guidance for the 70s. Kids, parents, and pressures. Get ready for a support group and some beards. Tell me how you feel about your father. >> I think uh >> Okay. What's he afraid of? >> Why is he afraid of that? >> Uh cuz he's afraid of uh his reputation. >> Oh, okay. Now, that's a reality. >> Cuz like he's afraid that if I look bad or I do something wrong that it's going to hurt him as a person. >> Cindy, you're now him. Mhm. >> I don't like to be seen with you. I don't like my friends to see you. Now, how would you feel if somebody played that tape for you? >> Not too good. >> Have you told him what you felt? >> What did he say? >> Oh, he just sort of like he doesn't accept um criticism helpfully. He just thinks that you're trying to make trouble again. >> Do you think maybe you have really blown his mind? >> Maybe. >> Brother Dear, how is it you feel about your mother? >> Um, I'm not really sure. Hi. >> What relationship would you like to have? >> Well, I mean, I'd like her to be able, you know, like be just a a friend, you know? I'm a cool person. >> Pressures and conflicts and tensions, social pressures, all kinds of things that are really happening in our world. We'd like to look at some of those things this morning and see what happens to them. We're talking about the pressures that exist in the environment, in the world outside of your skin. the conflicts that are going on in the mental part of the system and the physical tensions that result. And we've all got all three of those. Whether it's family pressure, parental pressure, brother and sister pressure, dating pressures, all kinds of things that are really pushing on us from outside of our skin. [Music] There is something I can do about modifying my own system. However, for instance, if you can imagine that I have a a kind of a panel board hanging down in front of my system, in front of my chest and on this board is row after row after row of little electronic push buttons. And as I walk around through life, people push my buttons. Now each one of these buttons is wired into a circuit in the mental part of the system so that when anybody pushes it an almost predictable physical tension is going to happen in the system. Like for instance in the fourth row third button over that's the stupid button. You have a stupid button. We have a lot of these that we have programmed ourselves, programmed our computers, if you will, pre-wired the circuitry so that when somebody pushes the button, we get a reaction. Do your parents have a four-letter word button? >> Sure. When a kid discovers the four-letter word button, he hears the word, he doesn't know what it means, and a couple of days later, he uses the word, and mother goes through the ceiling, and he's discovered that mommy has a button, and he can make her jump through the ceiling anytime he wants to. Children find out at a very early age where mommies and daddy's buttons are. And they teach them all kinds of clever routines that all a kid has to do is push the right buttons and mother will jump up and down and scream and yell. And did you ever see little kids with a he's pointing at me button? I think that's so funny to watch little kids. One of them will just point the finger at the other one and the other kid will say, "Mommy, he's pointing at me." And as soon as the brother finds out that his sister has a he's pointing at me button, he can say I didn't touch her, but he's touched her button from a distance and boy does it bring her apart. What's a button that you've got? Anybody got a button? >> Personal appearance button. >> You mean whether you look good? >> No, the you're ugly button. >> Well, you're ugly button. >> Yeah, that's like your >> you're stupid button. >> What's another button? Do your parents ever push your buttons? >> My dad or my mom will say, "Uh, don't you think your hair is getting a little too long?" You know, that's all they have to say. And you know, right away, okay, there are a lot of long hair buttons. Not only do kids have long hair buttons, but as it probably will come as a great surprise to you to know that many parents have long hair buttons. Many of the uh older generation have a button that gets pushed every time they see anybody with long hair. And it destroys the whole intellect. You know, it just immediately they go into the pressure response to that button. Your buttons are your buttons. You're responsible for them. You got them in there in the first place, and you're responsible for keeping them or revising them as you choose. So, you might ask yourself after you've identified some of the buttons that you have, is this button really to my advantage to have? It isn't likely that I'm going to get the rest of the world shaped up. >> Do you want to change the situation with your father? >> Yeah. >> Are you willing to change it? >> Well, depends on what I have to change. >> Do you have to change anything? >> I don't think so. >> What is there about the situation that you want to change? >> Oh, I'd like to have my dad, you know, cuz like I can't talk to my dad at all. And I wish like we could just sit down and talk. >> Okay. That's the first time you said really what you wanted that could be attained. Why is it that he doesn't feel he can talk to you? What have you done that makes it tough for him to feel he can talk to you? >> I don't know. But for some reason, he just can't talk. >> Do you go out of your way to make the effort to talk to him? >> Yeah, I've tried, you know, we talked about it, but he just gets, you know, real, I don't know, violent. What what he does is he starts to yell and scream and then instantly I turn around and you know start yelling and screaming. >> Little push push back. See, >> as long as we're sort of hanging out our buttons and saying here, push me. People will and they do all the time. >> Would you stand up for a minute or just kneel up? >> All right. Now, here we are communicating. If you want to win, what can you do? If you want me to fall your way, what can you do? >> Yeah. >> You could take the pressure off. Okay. Push me down. >> Yeah. >> Well, push on me. >> What would it be if he took the pressure off in the situation? Where would you be? Where would your game go? >> It'd be gone, wouldn't it? >> All right. You're now you and I'm now your father and you're used to me pushing on you. What if you could change that? Change it. All right. That's basically what we're looking at. But you don't change anybody else. All you're doing is changing yourself. But if you take the pressure off, I don't have any place to go. We're really accountable for our own behavior. We're accountable for our own image of reality, for our own patterns, including the reaction patterns that we have to other people. It's very easy to say, "That guy drives me crazy." or people like that really drive me out of my gourd or whatever. But it's not the people that are doing the driving. >> All right. What kind of relationship do you want with him? >> I'll talk to him. Have him understand me. >> Have him understand you. Well, listen, Smarty. Are you going to be able to understand him at all? Do you think? >> Yeah, probably. >> How? What could you do that would be different? What can he do if you're not playing his game? Every time you sit there and you say, "Yeah, here it comes again. My old man is going to give it to me." He will because that's the game you're playing, too. And it takes two to play any game. All right. What is it that you want? Yeah. What are you willing to do to have that kind of relationship with Mr. Man? Well, I just like what if peace started argument, I just like cool it and you know, not give them any hassle and see what happens. >> Would you take the pressure off on your side? >> And that makes all the difference in the world because it's very unlikely that you're going to be able to get all the rest of the world shaped up so that they behave just the way you would like to have them. It is possible for you to modify your reaction. That doesn't mean that you approve of all of those things that you've been reacting to with a lot of tension, but that's different from reacting with the clutch reaction that really destroys your effectiveness and your ability to cope with or bring about change in the world. >> I'd like to borrow you, brother Deas. Who is it that you're working on? >> My mom. >> Okay. I've now become a lady. You don't mind the beard, do you? The mom. >> Okay. >> I'm going to kiss you. >> What? >> I'm not going to kiss you. It's not required. >> Okay. Brother Demart, how is it you feel about your mother? >> I just uh I I don't like what she does. >> No, that's what you don't like. How do you feel >> about >> positive or negative? >> Um I'm not really sure. Like I >> What relationship would you like to have? >> I'd like her to be able to talk to me, you know, and uh be cool about um things like hair. And uh >> that's what you want her to do. What do you want as a relationship with her? >> Well, I mean, I'd like her to be able, you know, like be just a a friend, you know, cool person. >> Okay. What are you willing to do to make that possible? >> Take off pressure on Maya. >> All right. What games do you play to get her? >> Um, I try to put her down in front of her friends and stuff. >> Do you do that? Well, >> no. >> But you try. >> Yeah. >> Okay. Okay. How do you feel about putting your mother down? >> I don't like it. The put down is a very common part of our culture today. And I'm convinced personally that it's profitable to build other people's self-esteem. By profitable, I mean it helps build our own self-esteem when we build somebody else's self-esteem. And furthermore, that we're not likely to give anybody else an extra measure of self-esteem unless we have enough of our own that we can afford to give some away. What's going on inside your feeler as you listen to that? >> I'm just, you know, flashing on me. >> Okay, now that might be interesting. Let me just try something. Okay, I'm now you. You're now my mother. Mom, I want you to know I really feel very badly about our relationship. I want to have a good relationship with you. I want us to be friends. I want to be able to talk to you and I want to listen to what you say, too. And I'm willing to work it out. I'll do anything. That's right. How do you feel about that? >> I know what you'd say if I said I'd do anything to get a good relationship. >> Let's hear it. >> Uh, go get a crew cut, join the football team, quit surfing, quit bike riding completely. Um, socialize with my friends. Do you really think that she would do that at that moment? >> She wouldn't do that. But if I put down all pressure at my end, she'd just start pushing me more. >> How could she if you're not pressing her back? Okay, here's the point. To take off the pressure does not mean that you're agreeing with anybody else. And it doesn't mean you're going along with anybody else. It just means you're taking the pressure off. It just means you're not pushing back. When we feel put upon, when we feel as though the rest of the world is kind of closing in on us, many times we will defensively fight back by putting other people down and it really doesn't pay. Let's say your mother started giving you a list of things. I'm now you again. I'd say, "Mother, what I want is to be myself." It's okay for you to be you and want what you want. And it's okay for me to be me and want what I want. One of the things I want is a good relationship with you as a person, as a friend. Are you willing to accept me as an equal? >> Yeah, she go. Not where you're living in my house. I'll make all the decisions. I'll bet you that if you were to make a formal presentation like this, she would suddenly be confronted with a Tom Damasu was being her equal instead of little baby Tom Damasu she brought up. This might be something not just to look for in other people because our primary project is not to get everybody else shaped up, but to look for in yourself. How easy is it for me to put other people up? How much time do I spend reinforcing other people, giving them praise, compliments, warmth, encouragement, helping them to become better people? >> All right. What do you want in your situation with your mother? >> Just >> All right. Say it to her. I'm now her. >> Okay. >> I'm your mother. >> Uh, Mom, >> what is it now? >> Really? >> Um, >> what do you want? >> Uh, I'd like to talk to you about our relationship. Yes. What about our relationship? >> Um, I I really don't think it's been too good lately. >> I don't either. >> And >> well, what is it? >> I really like to change it. >> Well, what is it you want now? >> Um, I just like to be able to make decisions by myself and have you stop running. >> Not as long as you're in this house. >> Uh, can you have be more open-minded about it? >> What do you think? >> No. >> Okay. Where'd he go out the window? Number one, you weren't willing to accept me. It was very obvious. Well, I don't really walk up and hold my mom's hand. >> I know, but that would be different, wouldn't it? And chances are, if you would show that much willingness to really be there, then she might think, "Oh, there's something special going to happen." And at that, she might begin to listen to what you're saying because the difficulty with what we just did is observe. Mom, I really don't feel very comfortable about our relationship sort of thing. And all she can say is, "You bet." And I don't either. Show me that you accept me. >> Mom, um, I really don't feel good about our relationship lately. I'd like to have it change. Like to be able to love you a lot more. And I'll be willing to take the pressure off of my side. If you'll be willing to take the pressure off of yours. >> Good. Except you're asking her to do something. >> Well, the minute that you do that, you've had it because she's going to then take the point of view. and quite rightly so. Look what you're asking of me and look at all the things I've already done for you. What's what's big, Brother Mottz, about what you're up to is that you're willing to accept me and even if you were doing it by rope, I might be inclined to listen because you see there might be some pay value for me there. He's saying that he's been uncomfortable about our relationship. Well, I have, too. He's saying he wants it to be better. Well, I want that, too. And he's also saying that he's willing to do something about it. Well, maybe I'll be willing, too. But thank you for doing that. [Music] So, the 70s had just barely started when that film came out, 1971, and I'm sure they shot it in 1970. Um, and they're already calling it Guidance for the 70s. Like, we already got this decade figured out. like this is this is how it's going to go. Um man, so many things in there. uh what if you know so playing the tape um the buttons I can't remember what type of uh therapy uh uh that is but the whole idea of yeah the kind of mechanized way that people interact it's not transactional analysis but uh anyways I think to uh give us uh a much needed sideburn break. We're going to jump to the 80s. Uh mid to late 80s. I think this is 87. I was already in college like a long time. Uh this is called Gossip. Enjoy. Here we go. [Music] [Applause] What happened? What's it about? >> It's about how people start rumors in my paper. It's especially about rumors after disaster, like war or an earthquake, something like that. >> What do you mean? Oh, you know, wild rumors instead of facts. I'll give you some examples. During World War II, there were rumors that the Japanese had invaded Oregon and one that the army was dumping food into the ocean. There was even one in 1906 after the big earthquake in San Francisco that the zoo animals had escaped from eating the people camped out in Golden Gate Park. Come on. >> Really? Yeah, that one's pretty funny. But rumors and gossip can really hurt people, destroy their careers, even ruin their lives. Believe me, it's always good to check out stories before you repeat them. I know what you mean. Is everything okay, Squirt? >> Yeah, I just have something on my mind. I'll work it out. Okay, listen. [Music] Hey, did you hear about the guy from the high school coming onto our campus and dealing drugs? >> No kidding. >> Yeah, I heard it happened in the drama class after school the other day. >> So, what happened? >> Amy probably just wants to get Terry into trouble. She always hated her. I know, but Well, Brian saw it, too. >> Did not. It's not true. Did so? I heard it yesterday. I thought we were friends. I'm only telling you for your own good. >> Hey, Alex, for a good time, call Terry. Someone's even written her number in the bathroom. >> What are you talking about? >> Just that Terry knows how to have a good time, if you know what I mean. >> I got you. >> Look, I don't know what you're talking about. >> You mean I saw her hugging this guy from high school, and I think they were doing more than that when I walked in. >> But you didn't actually see anything. So what? >> So you're jumping to conclusions. It might not be true. You know there are lots of reasons for a hug. Come on, Brian. I've seen you've been spreading rumors about Terry, like she's a bad person or something. >> Since when are you and Terry such good friends? >> We're not. I mean, I hardly know her, but what you're doing doesn't seem right. >> And what do you think I'm doing? >> I think you're spreading stories about Terry to hurt her, and you've got other kids to repeat those stories. >> Hey, I can't help what other kids are saying. I thought we were best friends. >> We are, but this thing is getting out of hand. You know how stories get distorted and stuff? What I know is that if you were really my friend, you'd help me instead of getting on my case, >> even if it means hurting someone else. We both know the stories about Terry aren't true. I've been thinking and thinking and I just don't know what to do about this problem I have. >> What's up? >> It's my friend Amy. She's spreading some pretty outrageous stories about this other girl in our class. It doesn't seem fair. >> Well, you think that Amy's just being malicious that she wants to hurt this other girl? Yeah, she saw something and made up her own conclusion. And >> you and Amy are pretty close, aren't you? >> Yes, but I keep wondering what I do in Terry's place. Terry's the other girl. I've already tried talking to Amy. >> Well, how'd that go? >> She said if I was really her friend, I would back her up. Have you ever known somebody who was hurt by people talking about them behind their back? >> Yeah, I guess I have. It's even happened to me once or twice. >> What did you do? >> Oh, you know me. Always joking around. Yeah, I I used humor to try to make people laugh instead of trying to hurt. There's other choices, too. Like what? >> Well, like ignoring it. Sometimes the best weapon in your defense is silence. You could also confront the person who's doing the talking. Or maybe you could talk it over with a teacher or a counselor. Get some good advice. >> Michelle was telling me earlier how much rumor and gossip could hurt people. But if I help Terry, then I'd lose my friendship with Amy. >> That's pretty tough. Personally, I'd rather wrestle the alligators rumored to be in New York sewers than deal with this kind of gossip. >> Even your computer programs are easier. >> That's what you think. I have faith in you, kid. But it's up to you. now. Ready to tackle that new program? >> I'd rather hear about the alligators. >> Okay. Okay. At least I'll get my mind off of this stuff for a while. [Music] I'm sorry, Amy. What you're doing to Terry isn't right. It's affected the whole class. Everybody seems to be fighting these days. I think it's too much to ask of our friendship for me to hurt other people just to be your friend. I hope this works. Leave her alone. You don't know if that stuff is true. >> What are you one of her boyfriends or something? >> Cut it out. What do you know about it? You're probably just like Terry. >> What's that supposed to mean? >> You know exactly what it means. >> What have you done with your stupid bickering? Brian, go get the school nurse. Have her call the ambulance now. And Brit, go get Mrs. Clark. Everybody else, move back. [Music] And that's when you came over and asked for an explanation. By the time I got to school, the kids were already arguing. And that's when the accident happened to Alex. >> I see. So, you gave Amy a chance to tell me on her own. You did the right thing, Jenny. Thank you for telling me. Things were getting out of hand. >> Now, what happens? >> Well, I'll have to talk to the kids who were fighting. And of course, I'll have to speak with Amy about her part in all of this. But I have a special idea for the whole class. How about if we write and present an original play about the damage that gossip and rumors can do? >> That sounds great. >> Well, now it means that everyone will have to cooperate, especially Terry and Amy, and that sounds exactly like what we need right now. Well, I'll keep an eye on them, and we can talk about this more in class this afternoon. Right now, it's time for you to start school. And I want to check on Alex. Oh. Oh, I'm sorry. I I guess I didn't look where I was going. Boy, can you believe this? Some of TV's greatest stars are really aliens. They're not to control our airwaves. [Music] So that kid was just standing there and he got pushed over a bench. by those two fighting girls. I mean, is that really due to all the gossiping? Like, is that really the cause of or was he just a clumsy uh teenager who uh was at the wrong place at the wrong time? Um, man, I love that film. And uh because I was I mean that was well normally films that came out after I was in college I'm not into as much but um that one just I don't know it just it clicks with me in some way but um I have other films about gossip uh most of them are from the 50s and 60s um but yeah so my uh assistant my interns picked uh the Japan film and the guidance film and I was like, "What is this gossip film? I want to I want to watch this." Um, and now I'm having seen this film twice, I'm like, "What is that computer?" Like, it's like a terminal that she has. And that's well after uh personal computers were really beginning to hit. Um, in ' 87, I think I had an Amigga at that point. Um, I can't remember when Amega came out. Maybe it was later than that, but uh maybe it was like 1990. Anyhow, uh thanks for joining us today. I very much appreciate your comments, your eyeballs.
