hi everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show today I'm in a very orange room I'm not at the archive I'm traveling with Katrina we're in uh Brooklyn right now um and we just did a really wonderful show at anthology which I've got some photos from actually I have some photos of our trip on the way to where we are now um let's see so uh this is the Black Mariah this is uh Edison's lab in New Jersey and this is where the first motion pictures in the United States were shot in I think the 1890s this is a uh danger uh sign that basically says if you hear the claxon Bell get out things are about to explode uh this is where I did the show on Friday this is Anthology film archives and um this is also the facade to Dr octopus's lab in Spider-Man 3 I think um this is in the Maya Darren uh theater where we set up a film strip projector and I had a great a soldout show of uh when puppets go bad and it was amazing guess who showed up burrow Al our good friend burrow Al from uh the streaming uh one of the commenters showed up so it was great to be able to uh meet him in person slowly I will meet all of you in person um so uh anyways uh I've got another show on Tuesday at Light Industry in Brooklyn and uh it's uh from the collection of skip Alzheimer and these are films that damage my psyche but today what we're going to watch we're going to get back to the normal things the Cornet films that we've recently scanned um and other things so the first film we're going to see is a positive approach to changing humans which is interesting film it looks like it's from the 70s then Transportation a ship comes home then we're going to end uh with uh part of that world cultures and youth series uh and this is mingoy the magician so it's a Chinese magician so I'm pretty excited to watch this with you um we'll be probably pre-recording for the next week or so uh as we will'll be traveling in Internet I can't always trust but um I hope that's the students enjoy a relaxed and regulated experience they learn have fun and enjoy the class because they're really disruptive behavior of some students is carefully controlled by the teacher [Music] in other classrooms the situation is quite different undesirable Behavior can be changed [Music] [Music] a main part of the teacher role is to change behavior of students this may be academic Behavior or it may be social behavior teachers have a direct influence on the behavior of students whether they plan it or not for example unintentionally they teach students to be persistent in interrupting the teacher who is trying to work with another group of [Music] children if we can understand how the behavior of the teacher directly influences the behavior of the student then instead of this [Music] we can have [Music] this a whole class can change from this [Music] to [Music] [Music] this any age group can improve from this [Music] to this the most effective way to help teachers learn the principles of behavior modification is through inservice courses where they can try out the learning theory principles in their own classrooms between meetings leading the inservice is Dr Marsha McBeth School olist of the shoreline Public School Seattle Washington the ABCs stand for antecedent behavior and consequences antecedent means what goes on before a specific behavior occurs we know that all fourth grade children cannot do fourth grade arithmetic we may be able to prevent the kind of disruptive behavior that often accompanies frustration by giving a test to see what he can do and providing materials at that level or take a simple situation such as who is to be the line leader in a second grade class a calendar with the names of each child in the room written on it for each school day eliminates the necessity of choosing teachers are pretty creative about thinking of [Music] antant although Richie and Mark have not yet learned to tell time they can match the hands to those on the real clock one effective way of changing behavior is through the use of operant conditioning any Behavior which is immediately acknowledged recognized or reinforced in any way is more apt to happen [Music] again any Behavior which is ignored or not responded to is less apt to happen [Music] again day by day all kinds of Behavior both appropriate and inappropriate are being responded to or ignored for example what happens after an assignment has been made the teacher helps punishes notices all when the student is not working what does the teacher do when he is working he ignores him so according to our Theory the teacher is reinforcing nonworking Behavior [Music] you may wonder why you praise him for something he is supposed to do we are trying to change his behavior to teach him more appropriate behavior even if we think he is supposed to do something it may not be meaningful to him praise and other reinforcers are meaningful to most children later on comes the intrinsic reward of enjoying doing something but it doesn't start out that way [Music] but if he is praised every time what happens when you stop fortunately there is something called intermittent reinforcement this means that you start out reinforcing every time but then you begin skipping occasionally unfortunately this intermittent reinforcement can also work against us now the teachers are ready to begin identifying situations they would like to change it may concern one child or a whole class John saheta school psychologist with the shoreline Public Schools explains to the inservice class how to pinpoint Behavior objective definitions of behavior are necessary the teachers selected a variety of behaviors they wanted to change there was Jerry who never finished [Music] assignments Matthew who was always out of his seat when he was supposed to be [Music] in and Miss emy's fourth graders who didn't stay in their seats long enough to start an assignment [Music] there was Pat a junior high school student rarely completed his [Music] work and Randy who talked out inappropriately bounced on his chair and displayed other such disruptive behavior [Music] you won't know how far you've gone unless you know where you were you need to count and record how often the behavior you want to change occurs of course it depends on what you are counting if you are counting temper tantrums you could probably tally all of them if you're measuring how many minutes it takes a class to come in and settle down you could use a stopwatch for hitting Behavior you might want to use a wrist counter now we are ready to apply some of the principles we have been talking about what is rewarding to one child may not be to another giving a child free time to read a book in the library may be rewarding to one while reading might actually be punishing to another always pair an extrinsic reinforcer such as a gold star with social reinforcements such as praise although praise is a good reinforcer for some children it is not enough but when the two are paired often enough classical conditioning occurs and later just the praise is sufficient be sure reinforcement is given [Music] immediately when possible try to find a curriculum related reinforcer always provide a method of weaning away from dependence on extrinsic reinforcers let the student know that this method is to help him learn a better way to behave or learn by applying the principles teachers were able to affect changes here for example the anant was setting an egg timer for anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour when it rang one point was earned for for each child who was sitting in his seat total points were recorded on this track and when 500 points were earned the class had an extra [Music] recess Mr Johnson teaches social studies he is trying to determine what will be reinforcing to Pat Pat likes free time to work with science equipment he also would like to earn extra credit points to raise his social studies grade Pat records a point for every 5minute block of acceptable behavior the points will later be turned in for his reinforcer we can observe a significant change in his performance [Music] this teacher has a unique plan for intermittent reinforcement of her whole class she has attached a Bucket close to the ceiling it is lowered from time to time when the children are working when it reaches a certain level she will read the note inside which will tell what the class has earned [Music] these children worked for four weeks to earn points toward a field trip each completed assignment in each subject earned a point for the [Music] class field trips can be highly motivating sometimes the school psychologists are called in to help set up a modification project Jerry is falling behind in his school work because he does not do his class assignments one thing that is very reinforcing to Jerry is doing extra things with his parents so it is decided to involve the parents in this project the project is explained to Jerry with his teacher present [Music] Jerry begins earning his [Music] points Jerry earns his reward Bo Mr Ceta helps a teacher set up a project in a [Music] classroom children identify individual differences among themselves they also know what they can do to improve their their [Music] behavior at the final in service teachers are asked to share their [Music] ideas and finally comes the evaluation over 80% of the participants felt that they had gained a valuable tool and observations in the classrooms proved they were using it but the winners the winners were the [Music] students oh [Music] New York Harbor in the Morning Light [Music] many forces merge here Tides shifting winds melting Mountain snows currents within currents finished they on this morning tugboats on the river prepare to bring in a great ship the United States the senior docking pilot of New York Harbor a man who has docked over 20,000 ships boards a tug on route to the big [Music] liner Captain Bill Snider has piloted 3 to six ships a day for 25 years but conditions are never the same known full tide in 21 minutes wind from the north variable four tugs to work with unknown the moment to moment shifts and changes he keeps feeling the wind and watching the current before deciding his tactics [Music] [Music] all right [Music] [Music] now from the side hatch he gives his first order all tugs on the starboard side two at the bow one Center one at the stern there's a strong Downstream current he'll have to use the corner owner of the pier to make the turn into the slip a mile from the pier the other tugs close into their first stations [Music] here on the river after 4 and 1/2 days on the ocean the last hour is [Music] critical okay Captain Snyder is off to the bridge eight decks above to take command of the ship his tug moves back to tie up at the stern it should be replaced how they going to work it made it this is Pier 86 where the schedule calls for the United States to dock at precisely 8:05 [Music] to be okay now still in Mid River The Majestic ocean liner is steered to keep the force of wind and current from pressing on her vast side that side is five city blocks long and 17 stories high the slower she moves the further she is from her ocean element the more vulnerable she becomes to the great pressures of current and wind [Music] [Music] she keeps heading Upstream until her Center Point is opposite the pier head [Music] rad the captain will wait until the last moment before he angles her toward the slip then he'll be ready for the climactic maneuver when her longside takes the full force of wind and [Music] Tide the designer of the United States is on hand each time she arrives every two weeks he watches Bill Snider bring his ship in speed today the first stage is Complicated by fresh hits tricky intermittent currents caused by melting snows as far as 200 mil away come ahead easy very easy Snider who was alert to every change directs his four tugs and the ship's engines responding to all the forces pressing on the ship to swing her safely into the slip he needs the corner of the pier to Pivot around but first he must maneuver to bring the ship to lean against that corner if Snider's operation is not perfectly coordinated the 55,000 ton Colossus could smash into the million dooll Pier [Music] [Music] easy Barbara come ahead easy yeah very easy the timing is precise he can't miss an by even a few seconds she mustn't come in too fast or too slow either sometimes they have to move it back and start all over again easy [Music] easy the men's alertness is in their bones they take a break while they can but they're always ready [Music] [Music] that's it she's on the knuckle ready to be [Music] swiveled [Music] L one delicate maneuver accomplished every moment brings another when the front hgs reach the port side bow they'll be in position to control the lever the ship's Center is the balance point tugs pushing the bow and the stern will ease her around the [Music] bend the designer William Francis Gibbs made his ship the fastest safest and some say the most beautiful ocean liner of all but here she comes and now she moves into the most delicate phase of the operation the slow passage down the edge of the dock her forward movement must be tightly controlled so the sharp proud doesn't cut into 12th [Music] Avenue de over the spring lines the first of 30 ropes [Music] [Music] certain of the ropes will be used to pull the ship when things get too critical for her own big propellers that'll be soon she's very close to the street [Music] [Music] from where Bill Snider stands his view of the street is blocked by the ship's prow he can't see the edge of the street so he watches for a marck on the side of the pier he mustn't approach it too fast or the ropes won't be ready in time for his next move he cuts the ship's engines tugs holding tight only the ropes and Powerful winches now pull the [Music] ship the tht ship must be maneuvered to stop within 3 in of the [Music] mark inch by inch she keeps coming while skilled hands work the final ropes to bring her in on time if the first ship of the day is late the whole Port is late inch by inch inch by inch now and she's dead on the Mark it's 805 [Music] la la n [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] okay [Applause] my name is Ming orwan and I'm 16 years old I live in Hong Kong and go to school but I spend all my spare time learning to be a magician from an old Chinese Master tonight my teacher Mr Wong is performing at the supper club and I'm assisting him [Music] Hong Kong consists of 273 islands and is a British territory lying right next to China it's also a crowded exciting City where we speak some English and mostly Cantonese language of southern China [Music] [Applause] my teacher Mr Wong is 72 years old and is master of Chinese magic and juggling and when he accepted me as his Apprentice 2 and A2 years ago I was thrilled but I'm still very nervous about performing myself [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Sal yes the rice bow illusion is my favorite but as much as I ask Mr Wong says he won't teach it to me until I become a professional fore [Applause] even though I'm only a step away from him it amazes me I still can't figure out how he does it [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] I first got interested in Magic when I was eight my father gave me a magic kit and ever since I've Loved creating Illusions it's fantastic like creating something that does not exist and I love the challenge a trick can take 3 seconds to do but months of practice to perfect [Music] Mr Wong lives with his 93 year-old mother in one small room Hong Kong is a very crowded City and people make the most of any space they can [Music] find Mr Wong has been creating Illusions for 60 years and in the old tradition learned juggling acrobatics and Magic from his teacher in China now that style is almost gone and Mr Wong is one of only two magicians in Hong Kong still performing in the old way Mr Wong says there was no real beginning to Magic it has its roots in the superstitions of prehistoric tribes there are even drawings in the Egyptian pyramids 4,000 years old showing magicians practicing the art he saids in ancient China magicians used to travel the countryside performing amazing feets of magic for the dinner and in fact he says the famous Indian rope track actually originated in China over a thousand years [Music] ago this morning Mr Wong called to say he has exciting news for me I [Music] [Music] Mr Wong says he has to go to maau next week to perform in a special festival and he wants me to fill in for him at the Supper Club the owners were a little worried but he assured them that with his help I would be ready by opening night [Music] [Applause] [Music] we are shut up [Music] Mr Wong says he wants me to do the rings and several big Illusions in my show people love big Illusions and he says they're even more effective if I co up volunteers from the audience [Music] fore [Music] [Music] my father and mother have always been very encouraging about my magic and I guess I just love entertaining [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] hallah my best friend Bonnie has agreed to be my assistant for the three nights at the supper club and she's quite excited too at least she says she is [Music] hey I also want to do a vitation illusion Mr Wong feels I won't have time to perfect it before my show but I like to try help he uses three swords then takes out two Duchess of Kent hospital I come here every year and I love performing for children they're so easily uned and they really believe in magic [Music] fore [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] well I never thought I'll be this scared Dear Mr Wong before leaving for maau he has some last minute advice for me he says to keep talking to the audience like they are my [Applause]
