e that is hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mimer films and I am not very happy with the uh with my Elgato uh webcam it's just not working it's really really persnikity and I think part of the problem is that there's this software layer to it that just makes it just not work um and or very buggy so anyways I'm going to try to get that working while we watch this next film and I have a film set up on the uh scanner and this film is very shrunk uh which which is why I have this white uh phone core thing on on the core here because what's going to happen is the film's going to come off and it's going to go do this and then it'll kind of build up what I call uh making Pottery so it'll it'll like cup out and then collapse so that's why I have that in place so hopefully this will work I tried to run this yesterday and it just did not this is called pre-approach pre-approach enjoy named Joe Bowers who had dreamed up a terrific sales plan striving into a hump without a word he began to sprinkle dirt on a stop she screamed but Joel just kept on spreading dirt don't worry lady said Joel don't worry yes but lady said Joel when I get through demonstrating the Super Deluxe electric cleaner I'll eat all the dirt that's left what do you say to that well I'm glad to know that she said because we have no electricity well Joe's plan was daring and imaginative an approach and demonstration all wrapped up in one but his pre-approach getting the in necessary to make his sales plan effective drew a zero in football a a successful coach always Scouts the rival team carefully before the big game by studying their strength and weaknesses he is able to plan an effective defense and offense without this information he could be in for some unpleasant surprises in selling the objective of the pre-approach is the same to plan an intelligent sales campaign this means planning to show specific benefits to that particular Prospect planning to appeal to his buying motives knowing in advance what may irritate this Prospect knowing what pace of presentation will fit this prospect's mental Tempo planning to handle the objections this Prospect will probably raise in short a sales plan is an interview completely tailored for a particular Prospect just as a football play is planned to go all the way against a certain an opponent with nothing left to chance without a pre-approach without knowing the prospect's ability to pay or who has the authority to buy a Salesman wastes his time on China eggs or blind alleys the pre-approach is the first of the five stages of the sales interview but let's get this straight there are no definite well-lighted steps in selling it's more like a path to be followed your pre approach May begin while you are still prospecting and continue right into your approach to the prospect for instance Harold Wells found out from a customer that his friend had the need and the financial ability to satisfy that need he also had no commitment such as a relative in the automobile business all this qualified him as a prospect in the same conversation he moved into the pre-approach stages he continued his pre-approach by digging up more facts about Kimble on his approach he checked the facts he had by a few questions and by observations of his prospect's reactions ready up to the last minute to adjust his sales plan to any new facts that might appear here's Ted Sanders successful salesman of industrial lubricants Tad would you tell us something about your pre-approach methods glad to pre-approach takes a biggest part of my time in most of my sales the best example is a sale I made to one of the largest Manufacturing plants in this area the Kelsey corporation that purchasing agent had given me the polite Bush off time after time he seemed completely sold on the deal he already had but one day a competitive salesman I knew began crying the blues about this same purchasing agent said he was a Price Shopper period that they were using inferior lubricants there wasn't even a chance of selling a better lubricant he said because the plant engineer was a personal friend of the salesman for the lubricant he use now not too promising but it got me thinking I figured that if I had better products I should be able to prove their worth and if I could do that price and personal connections could be licked but how Kelsey is a big outfit so it wasn't too hard to get the name of one of their key maintenance men through a customer of mine who had been trying to hire I called on this fellow at his home and explained that I knew his reputation as a topf flight maintenance man and I wanted his advice he liked that he told me that troubles all plants have them [Music] not enough choice of special lubricants too much machine down time for lubricating and repair and not enough technical help with their problems then he described their setup in the plant operating group from the Vice President in charge of operations through the chief engineer plant engineer methods engineer to his boss the maintenance superintendent on the other side was the factory superintendent the production control superintendent and the purchasing agent quite a group of people any one of whom could prove a stumbling block I asked my new friend for a chance to visit his plant and meet his boss and on the scene I had a chance to discuss their troubles they agreed that centralized lubrication using a good product would really solve their punch press problem we worked out a rough estimate of savings in man hours machine idle time and repair bills that would more than pay pay for the installation and the extra cost of lubricants that was just one area by the time I was done I had a whole list of problems for our technical engineer to work on and I had the maintenance superintendent fired up with the idea of licking his troubles but he said I'll never sell this to the plant group it'll never get past the chief engineer I told him that was my worry all I wanted was his support if I could get a plan before them and then I asked them a few questions about each of the members of the plant group back at the office I got our technical engineer on the job and started mapping out my campaign looking over the notes I had collected on the plant group I checked off the maintenance superintendent and went to work on the rest the plant engineer and purchasing agent I figured for a negative but hoped for a good enough plan to get a majority approval the methods engineer would go along with whatever the chief engineer said the chief was a kind of crusty old gent in a sort of honorary position but with positive and overriding ideas he was an important question mark the Vice President in charge of operations had a keen mind he bought on merits not personality the factory superintendent generally kept his hands off engineering and maintenance problems but he was seriously concerned with Rising costs of operations the production control superintendent was in the same boat only his special problems were unexpected breakdowns and a rising rate of rejects it looked as though a plan that would solve all their problems would sell if I could get a chance to demonstrate it I went to work picking up all the personal information I could about each of the group but I kept coming back to the big question mark the chief engineer he was too dangerous to take a chance on I went back to the maintenance superintendent and asked him for any personal items he could dig up on the chief engineer finally he mentioned that the chief's grandson John McClure II was quite a track star in the local high school I got a copy of the high school paper and read about the track meets and what John had done in them next day I showed up at the high school athletic field and located young John John not only told me his granddad was proud of him but had been quite a track star himself and still had a keen interest in it that was a little extra I needed I got my plan all wrapped up tight bundle then I made my Approach direct to the chief engineer mentioned by conversations with the maintenance superintendent and that he had suggested I see him he was a bit Frosty until I slid over to Young John's exploits and how proud he was of his grandfather well I won't take time to tell you my Approach and the rest of the sale but I got my chance to present the plan to the plant group and they liked it because it was tailored to their problems as a result Kelsey signed the biggest contract for lubricants I've ever landed thanks Ted you certainly did a beautiful job well fellows your pre-approach problems may never be as complicated as Ted's but you can see now that there is a direct ratio between the amount of pre-approach effort required and the financial rewards of any sale Ted earned his sale because he planned it by finding out how his Prospect could best use his proposition by determining that it would actually save them money and by learning who had the authority to approve his plan then he studied the group he had to sell and tailored his sales plan to fit their ideas and their personalities he used every source that his disposal to make his pre-approach effective a fellow salesman a customer personal investigation his office staff and his own plain Common Sense he sold his plan because he was ready to sell because a good pre-approach gave him the confidence and enthusiasm to sell with [Applause] [Music] conviction so I would call that just barely animated that was that could have been a film strip um you know there was definitely some run and walk Cycles in that animation but man in general H what a strange strange film this is that I got that from a batch uh that I just got uh uh from a fellow collector who was based in Durham it says pre-approach 1952 uh 11 minutes the pre-approach or preparation for the sales for the sale involves extensive planning to appeal to the buyer the film demonstrates how a sales plan may be adjusted to meet the expectations of the buyer it's part of the salesmanship series well there you go and this I think was from the cultural resource Library uh which is where we got a bunch of films at one point um so uh let's learn about the life of The Nomad people uh hopefully this is this is more than barely animated enjoy pen for meat milk and wool to find enough pasturage and water for the flocks the nomads keep moving from place to place people who follow this kind of wandering or nomadic life are found in various regions of the world the Tundra lands of the Arctic the lands and deserts of Central Asia the drylands of Australia and the northern part of Africa these regions where the climate is not suitable for farming but is suitable for grazing it is here in Africa on the Northern edge of the great Sahara Desert that we find the Aram ads we have been watching the leader of these desert Nomads is called aik he decides where the group shall make their next Camp the campsite will be near this water hole water is most important to the nomads and their flocks the place the Sheik has chosen may look dry and bare but there are small shrubs on which the flocks can graze and so the sheep gives the make Camp setting up camp is a job that these people have done many times over the Sheik supervises the work for he has complete authority over the 30 people in his group let's meet one of the families in this group of Nomads Ali the boy and mimona his sister are helping their parents unload the family tent camels which are Hardy and well suited to Desert life can carry heavy burdens the tent is made of cloth woven from wool and goat hair the tent poles are carried along too while the women busy themselves setting up the tents the men and boys look after the flocks of sheep and goats the animals are already finding shrubs on which to graze as a protection against the hot sun Ali and his father wear a head covering called a turban and each one wears a loose cloak called a ber a protective covering against the hot winds and blowing sand back at the camp Ali finds his mother and sister lacing the tent and he's just in time to lend a helping hand Ali works on one end of the cloth while his sister Mim fastens the other end mimona skillfully pins two pieces of the tent together Ali unfolds one of the Woolen rugs that is part of the household goods belonging to the family each family carries all its possessions blankets utensils some food and of course water the water is usually kept in a goat skin bag and when mother empties the water bag Ali and mimona know that they have another chore to do at the water hole near Camp they fill the bag water is precious on the desert the lives of these people and of their flocks depend on these water hols which are few and far between while the children get the water mother prepares some suffer the main dish is called kuskus a kind of flower paste the meal will be ready by the time father is finished with his evening prayers these people are mohammadans and they pray with their faces toward Mecca the holy city of their faith a little later the family is seated in their tent for supper of course there are no chairs they would be too bulky to carry from place to place everyone sits on rugs or mats and shares the same dish of kuskus after supper the children gather around the fire and listen to a Storyteller relate old Tales stories about their tribe and legends about great heroes from generation to generation knowledge is passed on by Word of Mouth there are no books for these Nomad children here is a pattern of Life much like that of the wandering tribes of Biblical times the next morning soon after Sunrise the nomad camp is beginning to stir with activity with a light lunch of dates and bread Ali and his father are off for the day the shepherd who has watched the flocks all through the night is now relieved of his task from their sheep the nomads get wool which the women weave into cloth neona and her mother weave their Woolen yarn on a hand Loom the loom is part of the tent frame and is small enough to be carried about with the tent some of the cloth that mother is weaving will be made into clothing or blankets some may be sold in the village at the edge of the desert grinding flour is another task the women do wheat bought in the village is ground between two stones the women also gather dry shrubs for fuel sometimes this daily routine of nomad life may be interrupted right now now Ali and his father are looking for a baby goat that is missing from the Flop the binoculars father is using are one of the few pieces of find the animal quickly Ali has found the goat he is a good shepherd and so day after day the simple life goes on Ali and his father and the other Shepherds tend the flocks that are their livelihood and then one day the Chic rides up to talk with the Shepherds with great respect each one greets the leader the Chic has been looking for new pasturage for the flock it is time he says to move on for most of the pasturage Here Is Gone the flocks have eaten most of the shrubs in this area and so the decision is made to move the men bring the news to Camp everyone must be told to begin packing when Ali's mother is told she sets to work at once the other families too begin to take down their tents the camels are brought in for loading everyone knows what to do for breaking Camp is something that is done again and again down comes every tent in a little while everything is packed the camels are loaded the Shepherds begin to drive the flocks the nomads are on the [Music] moon somewhere in the vast desert they will find new pasturage and another water hole food and water for their flux this is the pattern of Life moving grazing the flocks and moving again this is the life of nomad people The Wanderers who live with their flocks under the Open [Music] Sky all right that's missing the title and it's missing the end that's kind of how some of these films go and the reason why is because uh what I've discovered is that when teachers don't know how to thread a projector the beginning of the film gets shredded and eventually has to get cut out because the sprockets all are all torn and the film is all mangled and likewise if a teacher doesn't know how to rewind a film they will sometimes run the film back through the projector they'll rewind it back through the projector and that will also Shred the film so the beginning and the ends get shredded uh on a lot of these films they get used a lot uh thank you was it uh Lord uh engine for telling me that I had not changed the title because I had not changed the title so I'm going to definitely do it for this next film which is where's this is called bringing in the peach and uh It also says the message is always first so can you guess uh what this film is about uh guess in the title in the comments bringing in the peach it's made by a company whose motto is the message is always first what what do you think that film is about I don't know I haven't looked it up I have a guess I have a guess it does sound dirty but I don't think it is dirty um let's find out this is this so this is why I enjoy uh doing this show is because we do stuff live and I have no idea what the film's about especially if the title is kind of like obtuse it's like huh so uh let's see what we what this is okay bringing in the peach enjoy for [Applause] missing supper again Mrs Smith came by with the some of her pamphlets again she means well but Don are you listening you picked me up here right yeah just just circle the block about 6:40 I'll be ready [Music] the e [Music] [Music] [Music] e [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] finally one of all Mrs Smith poems make some sense it's short to the point let's see if I remember it I'm only one but I am one I cannot do everything but still I can do something and because I cannot do everything I'll not refuse to do the something I can do I think the contract with allly looks real good you know Don that poem was written for us trouble is De isn't sold yet here so you won't starve where'd you get pizzas this time of year Don are we doing all we can if I finish the paperwork by noon tomorrow maybe rot there's one but where's the others maybe there are some Pickers on this side of the sea this is more like it they must be getting together to go picking I think I'll join them welcome brother you're just in time the picking is about to begin have a seat you'll enjoy the picking which we all must have a part in Peach day our special day when we pick the peaches don't you pick every day of course we can pick every day we should always be ready to pick peach picking should never become commonplace it's so good to turn from the world and pick peaches this Peach day when do we start picking we'll soon begin our picking but first let's make all the peaches out there feel comfortable we'll sing bringing in the peach bringing in the beach [Music] in the peach we shall come [Music] rejo bringing in the the peach important our goal our purpose we must pick them today on Peach day but first let's all turn to chapter one at that time the picking of the peaches was imminent and all of the people came out of their houses and they came everyone to this one place and as they gathered together they began to sing and they began to sing about the peach etc etc etc great chapter isn't it uh pardon me yes about the guide ah the peach picking guide a real blessing in my life I can't pick a peach without it you need the book definitely tells you how to pick you need a book you must pick a lot of peaches well at least I'm ready how often do you read it what does it say shh we're missing the talk H I wonder which trees we'll pick from this acre is our our Harvest field but there are too many of us to pick the few peaches that have rolled in there are many more Pickers than Peaches I know we haven't all been called but you have a part in my work I haven't been to picker's college or guide Institute you need to know how a peach thinks before you can pick it in the right manner huh the guide is very hard to understand you need years to understand it but then oh what a blessing you can pick peaches I'm told I had no idea that picking was so hard well the other Peach Pickers are still trying to steal our new peaches their methods are contrary to the guide and they bruise the fruit but there is good news our new baskets are paid for and we'll be able to paint the peach Monument next month this seems a very roundabout way to harvest peaches here it comes now we're picking ah we pick now what do you think we just did the culmination of thousands of hours of committee meetings for this moment can't we all pick it's not that easy the other groups can't be this this mixed up unpicking and as you go out from this place this morning out this week into the orchard I want you to think about picking Peaches I want you to concentrate on picking peaches tell me does your group demand a degree to pick peaches oh no we have enough sense and perception to know that anyone can pick peaches once you get the right feeling I sure wish I could get it [Music] this group looks active now men and you too ladies uh remember all of you can and all of us must be daily active in peach picking let's now review our proven seven-point technique to more effective peach picking pardon me I'm pleased to see a group that is really about this business of well thank you we certainly try to do our best I just want to tell you about the horrible lack of Pickers across the sea why don't some of you use your techniques over there a wonderful idea as a matter of fact I believe in that strongly myself but uh we haven't picked the peaches here yet I haven't really been called there I can't go my mom's not well but but I am sending a lot of my money I go to take a wife my sister is picking there now I think of her often charity begins at home um well I I we sure do appreciate your challenge sir and we are in perfect agreement with you now class uh back to our lesson who's that group I see they also have full baskets don't let those those contemporaries fool you now they may appear to be successful Pickers but in truth they just bruise the fruit no real picking they try to modernize the guide they're only interested in the Groves approval bad motives they think they are Pickers but it's just a game with them Beware of the contemporaries they water down the picking but I see fruit don't let that fool you only apparent results they are not Defenders Of The Grove just bystanders have a weak view of the peach picking guide dissatisfied and uneasy with the historic position of the groups scholasticism that reverences scholarship for its own sake accommodates the guide to science engages in dialogue with peach Riders they're they're just not separated warms hands at enemies fire Toleration that leads to compromise that leads to apostasy Curry's favor from Peach [Music] roders hey man we saw you coming glad to see you get free from the old Fashions they like love yeah too much old and not enough fashion this is love but that group the old Fashions have as full baskets as you contemporaries no it just appears that way it's only a a sham Harvest no love bad motives jealous they don't communicate with this generation of peaches they aren't relevant to the now contemporary Peach phical fuzzier than thou borrowed academic strength and intellectual stagnation tends toward anti-establishment ISM emphasizes pre-pick dispensation no social concern too militant too legalistic so separated they are separated from peaches Pickers trees and all ignorant contentious cultic extremists obscurantists I don't know somehow both of you sound different but yet alike when are you going to start picking across the sea our thing is work here no call really man I play the [Music] Bas do you realize how much bread we raised for advanced communication over there I go to take a mate my roommate's there she always seemed a bit straight but I think of her often I sure back her in her picking love starts right where you are like man you reading a good book here you read it this letter is from Paul Jesus Christ slave chosen to be a missionary and sent out to preach God's good news this good news was promised Long Ago by God's prophets in the Old Testament it is the good news about his son Jesus Christ Our Lord who came as a human baby born into King David's royal family line and by being raised from the dead he was proven to be the mighty Son of God with the Holy nature of God himself and now through Christ all the kindness of God has been poured out upon us undeserving Sinners and now he is sending us out around the world to tell all people everywhere the great things God has done for them so they too will believe and Obey him Diane isn't about time we have the Olson's over for [Music] dinner many people yet Untold with faces yet unknown though I'm only one it's true still I'm not [Music] alone working with his hand on mine work that he be [Music] again doing that which I must do doing what I [Music] can doing that which I must do doing what I can [Music] all right so uh that film was nuts but it immediately reminded me of another film um that is also nuts uh that it's also religious this is included out en [Music] aren't you going to stand up and sing but I'm not a man oh in this case you're a man men of God includes both men and women each does equal [Music] to up and and so my brethren we are reminded once again that every man is a Son of God and that all mankind is one Brotherhood why does your pastor speak of man and son is he not speaking to the women of course he is women are included in those words man man includes woman too and our word son includes daughter as well you have a very strange language man includes woman and that Brethren is what it means to be a real man of God wait a minute don't tell me Father includes mother no you're catching [Music] [Applause] [Music] on oh I'm not included oh my gosh holy cow that is insanity that was that peach film was insane and this is what's interesting to me is so you see it says bringing in the peach and then it has printed produced by Ken Anderson films and Ken Anderson is I know is a religious film company the message is always first but you notice there's no oh they wrote over it oh so there's a title there that was written over so I don't even know what this is was supposed to be oh anyways wow this is why I collect films and show films and specifically I'm interested in uh Christian films from the 60s and70s uh because sometimes they go way off the rail way way way off the rails to be kind of provocative amongst their congregation to get them to kind of think and you know probe and but man out of context and out of that time period holy cow it's so crazy um and that's why I show and collect films is for those moments where you're like holding in your head and you know your mouth is wide open and you really don't understand what's going on and it's not for traditional reasons it's not those traditional well that's shocking because that's shockingly sexual or shock shockingly violent that's just shockingly weird so I'm going to add that to my show which is called uh God awful and they are Christian films that are well-intentioned and yet are really really not good um so thanks for see this is what is great as well is that you were all there with me we all experienced this 21st century uh reveal of this film which has probably not been shown since the 70s um we got to all watch it together online and all got to hold our heads it's like a common experience like we survived a shipwreck and we're all on the same Lifeboat um but thank you for tuning in today uh I should say that not this Friday but next Friday uh I'm going to be live in New York City at Anthology film archives at 7:30 and we'll couple of times here on uh the streaming show but there's a couple of things that I I had a wonderful childhood very supportive loving parents um grew up in suburbs but there were still things that just shook my psyche in horrible ways um and so we'll watch films about those and also we'll watch films that resonate with me because they're uh emotionally they get me back into that that kind of creative time in my life I'm I'm still creative now but back then uh what tickled my brain as far as creativity goes uh I'm going to show you a quick little ad if I can find it where is it uh that's not it where is it yeah we'll just show you this I've been I've been pulling up ads for different reasons and this one just you know speaking of childhood uh resonating this is definitely one there a had just a basic Gumball thing and my in my brain there was this thing where magically thinking all right I put money in then I get a gumball and then I'll have a bunch of money and I'll just keep making money because I'll have more gumballs not realizing that oh I have to buy more gumballs to put in the machine and chances are the money I'm making off the gumballs that I've sold uh will not cover the cost of buying more gumballs um so I think I had one round of gumballs the ones that came with the the little gumball machine and then that was it then the rest of the time was it was just a bank I put pennies in um so anyways that's that's what I'm talking about as far as childhood psyche and things that resonate with me uh thank you so much for tuning in today um we'll be back again
