hello everybody welcome I'm skip Alzheimer and this is the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films those were some home movies of a trip to California started in 1948. um one of the things that's interesting we've we've digitized thousands and thousands of Home Movies over the the years and different styles kind of pop up there are some uh cameraman it's almost entirely men although there are women camera folks do show up um either it's people specific or it's landscape specific or Landmark specific so uh you'll see somebody who visits uh is on vacation and all they shoot are trees mountains animals um buildings and in rarely people and then there's those that interact with people and so this was an example of that where there were lots of people um going around interacting um it's it's kind of a fascinating thing we often talk about the cameraman's Gaze where the cameraman uh betrays what's going on in their head by aiming the camera at things that they're interested in it could be somebody's butt it could be another part of the body uh it could be um cars it could be trains all those things um oh yeah so I was looking up that film we showed yesterday the Great American student which was a Coronet film uh that was very self-aware and wasn't really an educational film it was really kind of a parody of itself and all the social guidance films that they did uh and I looked this up in our one of the guides that I have the academic films for the classroom a history by Jeff Alexander who is a uh film collector archivist guy and he writes about Coronet he says uh let's see um in a fitting hilarious PostScript to the Cornet the old Coronet guidance film era Milwaukee selected in Bob gronowitz edited a number of old Coronet guidance films using the word swell and showed the resulting collage at a meeting of Coronet salespeople urged by the sales people to sell the experiment as a full-blown film Cornett complied in the hilarious the Great American student 1985. we know that that's wrong because it actually was 1978 was Unleashed on unsuspecting school librarians this film was difficult to find in extend film libraries and is a unique in the genre of itself deprecating humor and is a historical masterpiece while we saw it yesterday I had I had only seen like the first couple of minutes of it when we were threading it up and so this is one of the reasons I love showing films uh pull him off the shelf pull him out of a can films we haven't seen and we Premiere them in the 21st century and you guys are there for it so thank you for joining all your comments uh if you didn't see it uh Watch yesterday's show on YouTube uh all right so this next film is for police officers it is detecting and recording skid marks enjoy [Music] no no no no no no all right Sarge you have a minute sure Jerry have a little trouble not exactly I'm just finishing up the report on that accident by Roosevelt School where The Pedestrian got hit oh yeah that's your first badman wasn't it how you making out okay I guess that's what I wanted to talk to you about to see the car lay down some skid marks and I thought I'd take you up on your offer to check me see if I missed anything I think we can make a case on this one sure Jay be glad to gave this one a full treatment didn't you and these photographs you took at the scene that's right that one shows the skid marks you can see they lead directly to the wheels of the car that's a good start positive identification of the car with the skid marks is one of the requirements mentioned in the manual by the way did you get a witness who saw the car lay down these marks no but I got a witness who saw the car sitting on the end of them after he heard the Screech good enough did you establish the beginning of the skid or each of the four wheels started breaking yes sir that's one lesson I learned well first I viewed the pavement from a low position looking down the skid marks toward the car I had Sam I was working with Sam Freeman that day I had Sam kneel down at the beginning of the skit we found the positive part of the skid mark and then I could faintly see the shadow where the right front wheel started to slide before it got hot enough to smear Sam ran his finger along the shadow mark at the beginning of the Shadow I had him stop and make a mark using a yellow crayon like you said in class did you repeat this little act for each of the four wheels yes we did and each time Sam not only marked with a breaking began but he wrote on the pavement the wheel which made each one you know whether the shadow was made by the front left or the rear right after we got all finished locating these Shadows we snapped a few pictures then we measured the skid marks Now Jerry how do you tell the difference between a front and a rear tire from the skid I'm not sure but I suppose the front tires grabbed first no there's a more positive way than that when the brakes of an automobile are applied the weight shifts onto the front wheels because of this increased weight the Treads of the front tires Arch so that only the shoulders of the tread ride hard on the pavement you get two narrow parallel marks from each tire instead of one wide smudge you'll learn something every day by the way Sarge I looked for that polishing and erasing action you talked about and I couldn't find any maybe there was a reason what kind of pavement did you have asphalty concrete that explains it you don't get a polishing or erasing action unless you have dirty concrete did you check for burnt off rubber along the pavement yes we did at the beginning of the skid the rubber was like dust but further along it was as if the rubber was melted off the tire it was a sliding Tire gets that hot there were no interruptions in the skid mark indicating that the braking was continuous the full stopping distance obviously the driver didn't pump his brakes did you measure and record the skid marks yes we did they're all on this field sketch now this is the probable path of The Pedestrian prior to getting hit why didn't you show the route of The Pedestrian pedestrians don't leave skid marks and you said not to put anything on the field sketch I couldn't see myself a field sketch can be used as evidence sketch looks okay to me I see you recorded the location of the skid marks by showing measurements from the curb line it's good I also remember to check the weather and Road surface conditions the pavement was dry and there wasn't any gravel or leaves or anything like that I know these things can influence the normal gripping effect of a skidding Tire I also checked to see if there was any greater slope this gave me a chance to use that little template well anyway the road was almost perfectly level did you make a test kid using the same car at the same place under the same conditions like it says in the manual sure did two of them the car was drivable and the driver had gotten over the shake so we let him do the driving I rode with him and when we were doing 25 the speed limit I told him to hit the brakes hard and to hold them to a full stop he did we laid down some beautiful Burns almost at the exact spot Sam and I measured the new marks and compared them with the original marks there was quite a difference good enough did the tests satisfy the driver that skid marks mean something yes it did especially when I called to his attention that the test skid with his car at the same location at 25 miles per hour the speed limit was approximately half the length of the skid he laid down in an effort to avoid the pedestrians you call this to his attention I sure did what'd he say wow the first thing he said was I'm a son of a gun only he didn't say gun from the way he talked I'd say he'll probably plead guilty especially if the pedestrian makes the grade you should if I'm any judge of skid marks I'd say the man was driving at least 40 miles an hour possibly 45 and that's much too fast for that location well that's what I figured and that's why I did everything the book says well Jerry you did a good job you gathered sufficient information to permit calculation of speed by a qualified person to be certain he's gathered all the evidence and officer should have a regular investigation routine a sort of a mental check-off list which might include locate skid marks protect them from obliteration by passing vehicles link the skid marks to the vehicle measure and photograph the skid marks make a field sketch locate the skid marks with fixed objects note influencing conditions such as gravel leaves moisture ice or snow on the pavement and whether there's any grade note the condition of Car and Driver record all information carefully whenever possible make a test skin with that kind of a systematic accident investigation routine an officer will be able to prepare a clear and complete report like a fingerprint at the scene of a crime a skid mark at the scene of an accident is most important it is necessary therefore to detect and record skid marks carefully [Music] so many questions so many questions of this um it's pretty awesome though um but he said I'll be the son of a gun but he didn't say gun um I you know run across these uh police training films some of them are more triggering quite literally than others so I am reserving those for a later time but um really kind of fascinating all right so behind me uh we have a film set up on the scanner and uh it looks to be a contemporary film except that it's not it looks like it was made maybe in the 40s uh and I think it's British here's housing problems enjoy upon roads of ugly badly designed houses were hastily put up to provide accommodation for the ever-increasing army of workers which poured in from the country to the towns here are some pictures of typical slum architecture this roof is sagging because the rafters have decayed no amount of new tiles will put it right when these houses were erected anyone could build a factory right outside your front door many of the houses are sold that they have to be shored up to prevent them falling down altogether sometimes the mortar Falls away from the brick and the walls bulge out here are examples of sheer neglect these walls probably haven't been attended to since before the war and the woodwork has gone unpainted for Generations many houses have not got water laid on people have to manage as well as they can with a tap in the yard and sometimes at the End of the Street few houses have provision for the drying of washing and the clean clothes had to be hung up in the narrowest of backyards when it's red the clothes have to be dried in the passage here's a typical interior of a decayed house and here at the laugh and plaster have given away all together this lavatory in sync has to do for four families and now for the people who have to live in the slums here is Mr Norwood these two rooms which I am in now I have to pay attention was a week for it and I have in the room to swing a cat round I've also got five other neighbors alongside me with the same predicament as I'm in myself and I'm only overrun this bugs I've got mice and rats every drop of water we have to go out in the yard door to affect you if we want to wash the baby we have to use the dish and use it in the same room as where I am and that's for cooking well we have to use the gas stove alongside the bed where we sleep and we can drink in the other room where the children also relay coming into these rooms I've had no luck since I've been in first I lost one young stream one and I lost another youngster and another one seven weeks after this is what Mrs Hill has to say unless you've burnt your seasick one leg you want longer than the other and as the upstairs is coming downstairs where it's sinking we went to see the new houses and they're lovely for ear it gets on your nerves where everything's filthy dirty filthy wool and the Vermin in the world is wicked so I'll tell you we're fed up anybody come to see you they say they feel bidious when they get down the stairs because it's all cooking these are the stairs I told you about to run one leg bigger than the other to come up what were they all in the wall I can't tell you where we have to manage there is this we just cleared up the daytime to keep the dirt out of our mouths and that's all you've got the stairs you're done with your coming down again or not same with the passage that's all the same on the crook inspect everything in the out is on the floor there's no straight thing in it whatever [Music] did you see your family for children up the stairs in case they fall down and your frontal doesn't go on the lane in case the landing comes down into the passage so I'll tell you where we are fixed and here is Mrs Graves well I've been here for 24 years and this last one it has been a mystery to me my boss gives way in the front room I'll take my bed down and put it in the back I went to bed early I had a baby very babe in the morning instead of kidnap for the children for school work being awake all night I'll let the children lie as the baby went to sleep for the first time all right little black dog kept running the belt so I had massive days off with the baby thing in it was a dog on my head I looked up the silver that it was a big wreck I screamed and run out and let the baby we I have to put the dirt into my bath take it through the kitchen window and out through the kitchen we cannot get it out of the passage on account of the surely nut we have no cover for food not even to put a bit of breathing we leave anything on the table of the night time we have the rest and here is Mr burner is a bit hard for the wife and besides myself my children bringing them up in the wrong room of course a lot of people don't understand what it is living in one room the cooking conditions is very odd especially on the wife and she has to do the cooking it's all done on a gas ring of millions of fry in this and Fry lip if he comes to a baked dinner it's in the oven and then light the fire outside it's too warm in the room of course we can only buy enough food for the one day as there's no conditions or anywhere to keep the food overnight and you wouldn't do the food any good to keep it again is all the breath of the farmers in the one room return it bad the washing conditions we have a little bit that is in the backyard and not too late but we get over that of course and I suppose people realize what it really is to be tied up in the one room and cannot get anything any better we are only open at the council or line their ideas up and get their minds made up to get my flats ready so that every working class now will have hygienic flat to live in where the cooking conditions is better the American accommodation is better Sleeping combination is better and what's more you have a bath the more enlightened public authorities had been applying themselves to the task of Slum clearance with energy the public authorities have now the power to pull down slums and put up in their place new and fine houses but the ever-present problem which slows down the most energetic Authority is where to put people while their hovels are being pulled down and new houses built for them a great deal of thought from Architects engineers and other experts has gone into the design of buildings for re-housing here is a model of a block of flats prepared by the British steelwork Association and based on recommendations by the council for the research on housing Construction the building has a steel frame which takes the whole weight the walls do not have to support the weight of the building or the roof they are made of light standard units which are fitted into position after the framework has been put up all the parts of the building are standard they can be brought complete from the factory and put into position at once here's another steel frame building designed for the Quarry Hill estate at Leeds the walls floors and staircase treads are made of precast concrete slabs reinforced by Steel the walls and floors are made with an airspace to keep out noise each flat has a back-to-back range for coal or Coke a gas griller and a gas plug by every fireplace this model won first prize in a competition organized by the cement industry in this kind of construction wooden molds are put up and concrete poured in the concrete is reinforced by light steel rods or mats the walls carry the whole load and there is no other framework in this particular example walls and floors are cast in one piece here is another reinforced concrete building now going up at cancel green the two blocks have been arranged to run roughly North and South so the rooms get as much morning and evening Sun as possible gas is used for cooking Heating and Lighting the inside of a building is as important as the outside the rooms must get as much sun as possible the walls must keep out the sound of the people next door the kitchen is very important it must be easily kept clean and the appliances must be cheap to run the gas industry has designed suitable appliances for cheap cooking and for room and water heating especially to meet the needs of Slum clearance schemes the general layout of a site is extremely important here's a model of the whole Quarry Hill estate at Leeds it's a good example of blocks of flats laid out with large Open Spaces a welfare center a shopping center and all kinds of amenities where there is enough room and where the price of land is not too high it's possible to build Cottages States and give each house its own garden in dark sand slam clearance work it must take people just as they are it is however our experience that if you provide people from the slums with decent homes they quickly respond to the improved conditions and keep their homes clean and tied in Stephanie we are finding that the amount of Interest which the people are taking in their new Flats is advancing day by day all right and now let's have a word with Mrs Reddington well I'm very pleased to know that I that I've got a nice reflected Market in nursing else now like the market buildings where them said novice in two rooms I had to do all my own cooking in the room that we reflect and and left all of us that novice now I've got a nice little place of my own three bedrooms a lovely calorie a living room and a bathroom a bathroom the best of all what we wanted away from Market borders I could not do no washing there I had to send it all out and better and now Mrs air tried well I like the price very much I've got two nice rooms Discovery in the bathroom a nice cupboard and a wardrobe and a nice cooker and affordable copper all the same Mrs apptride will never forget the rats in the house she had before [Music] I said no I ain't talking here he must as quick as it is on the beach I said run I would come up but when he come up he said sorry and you see him on the beach he'd like that see looking at him he slowed the clothes over the top because he got a whale game when he got a wagon on the floor and he got behind my Beats if you like that knife and he puts two feet round the faces like that plus he's gone if I don't think starts with the heat but he said no he's under the beach when he jog down like that to find him because he jumped up he jumped into the broom and he got away from there he went over on the sidewood jobs in the game with a broom broke the broom and then he knocked him down on the ground because the screams and he was terrible so he had to jump on him and then he picked him up and killed him there's two caretakers in this estate we have to sweep the stairs daily see that all Balcones have cleaned and sweep up the courtyard and pick up little unlawn this takes us in the course of the morning up to about midday then we break away from dinner after dinner we have to come back and pick up the remaining letter left on the Courtyard by the children and then do all minor be fair such is unstopping of sinks unstopping off baths and unstopping of levities we carry on this work up to about five o'clock in the evening when we break away for our tea half the tea one may come back on duty he has to parade the courtyard keep all children in in order and see that they don't get up to no Mischief he has to carry on up to 12 o'clock at night when he becomes his duty then to walk around at midnight to see that no music or any noise you've been making on the estate for the quietness of the tenants up to the present Only The Fringe of the problem of the slums has been touched however there is reason to hope that within the next 10 years considerable strides will be made towards removing the worst lung it was after this course sleeping outside two three nights a week couldn't get no sleep five of us got to sleep in one room upstairs saturated with bugs also got going away through the condition of the place foreign hundreds of them every direction and not small ones but loud ones just like Beagles you couldn't discern where they were beetles or what but they were bags so they poisonous settled in that beautiful day then they're out it settles there if they don't come through at the time and the rain comes but it comes down a couple days after and it smells terrible pain living free a week or two and what's worse is when they go to school next day if there is any Birmingham there's no thought of air but still they don't know if it's not about do they funny how uh everybody went to uh Monty Python with that as it does seem to lend itself to that and I'm sure that um the pythons might have seen that on television or you know something like it in that style um and yes man it was hard to understand what those uh most of the the tenants were saying um because of the sound capturing and then also just the way they speak it's just very thick um let's see uh this one goes out to all of the machinists out there who uh are taking a lunch break and watching our show uh you know the song sing along [Music] okay [Music] what will you do when you're finally on your own [Music] sooner or later each of you will say goodbye to your classrooms enter the world of work a world none of you made but you can help make better a world that permits you to be self-reliant to pay your way from the salary and wages you earn for work performed in a variety of career occupations time spent now planning for that world may be the best investment you ever make this film will tell you about one career area open to young people mostly Young men before it is over you should be able to answer for yourself the question is a career in Machining for you thank you the wonderful Machines of today and those of Tomorrow amazing to everyone young and old those inclined toward engineering as well as those merely curious you yourself no doubt have watched these machines in action the construction sites on the road in laboratories on the TV screen surprised many times astounded by the complexity of their many parts but do you wonder how these machines came into being not only how they are invented laid out on drawing boards but who it is that takes raw metal and cuts and shapes drills and fits all the parts so that they assemble first into prototype design models prototype models that serve as patterns for the thousands and thousands more to be produced on assembly lines in actual fabrication of machines interest you if cutting and filing and grinding metals of all kinds and other materials too have a Fascination for you if making and fitting Parts together the way a blueprint will tell you to working to tolerances as close to 10 millionths of an inch then you may be in line for a job in Machining job Specialties employing over a million skilled people paying well above average providing training to young people for continuous Improvement in their skills and still better salaries one warning physical demands on Machining workers can be great more than many women are willing to stand okay you say maybe that could be my thing work with my eyes and my hands what about a machining job is it a dead end can you get ahead good question there are workers at many job levels in the Machining occupations each level is an opportunity for advancement among the skills are all-round machines tool and die makers instrument makers Machine Tool setup man and layout man then there are Machine Tool operators the largest category and less skilled like to know what an all-around machinist does putting it simply you might say he uses metal tools to make machine parts he may set up and operate every one of the machines in this large shop when The Machinist turns this block of metal into the intricate part called for by precise specifications it could be a part for this unusual vehicle used at airports or apart for a new type of generator being installed in a nuclear power plant part for any of a hundred different modern machines [Music] because machinists understand what each machine tool can do and because they know the working properties of many metals and Plastics all-round machinists can plan and carry through the operations necessary to machine a specified part the skill of the all-around machinist is reflected in the accuracy of his work and he constantly checks using Precision measuring instruments often The Machinist finishes the work by hand and assembles the parts by hand tool and die makers are highly skilled and creative their products tools dies and special holding devices are the basis for mass production in metal work tool and die makers know how to use almost every type of machine tool and precision measuring instrument [Music] have a broad knowledge of shop practices and Mathematics and of all manufacturing metals and alloys and can do precise hand work tool makers are rated High among Machining workers scientific and Engineering research in medicine and medical devices [Music] Research In Space machines research and pollution in underwater living are translated into laboratory models by instrument makers these skilled people work from rough sketches or detailed blueprints many times from a verbal idea their skill in operating Machine Tools as well as their ability to hand craft metals enables them to develop Parts which do not vary from specifications by at times more than 10 millionths of an inch plants and machine shops that do large volume Machining use skilled Specialists setup men they are the ones who set up the Machine Tools so less skilled Machine Tool operators can use them they set the operating speeds operating sequences adjust the guides stops and other controls although many metal cutting machines today are controlled by punched tapes the setup man has the job of making sure the machine is operating properly another type of skilled worker the layout Man Marks metal castings forgings and other metal stock to indicate where and how much Machining is required the layout man uses many instruments to prepare a piece for Machining he must work with extreme accuracy he's familiar with the operation and capabilities of all standard Machine Tools his instructions are easily followed Machine Tool operators work with a variety of Machine Tools though most of them specialize on one or two these are the tools that turn out the thousands of identical parts needed on lines where all sorts of products are assembled from trucks to typewriters cranes to computers a machine tool operator places rough metal stock in a machine tool and makes Minor Adjustments as necessary the operation sequence and speeds have been set in the Machine by a more skilled worker with experience and training the machine tool operator can advance to a more skilled category where will you find all the people and all the machines you've seen making everything you'll find the bulk of the more than a million Machining workers where Machinery is being built Transportation equipment fabricated Metal Products electrical machinery and electrical equipment and you'll find some working in railroad repair shops in maintenance shops in textile factories and paper glass and chemical plants and of course in the armed services other Machining workers are employed in Research Laboratories where unusual creative ability is required to carry out the requirements of research scientists and engineers and machining workers are required by the Armed Forces at military facilities throughout the world where they repair and modify metallic and non-metallic parts for all types of military machines training in the armed forces includes learning how to operate all types of machine tools which enable service Personnel to get high paying interesting jobs in Industry when their time in the service is completed you'll find that wages in the Machining occupations compare most favorably with those in other industrial occupations rates vary in different areas of the country apprenticeship is the usual way you enter the skilled Machining occupations tests and interviews help determine whether an applicant has the aptitudes and temperament to perform this type of exacting work good vision and Judgment of depth and distance are a basic requirement as is good hand and eye coordination during the apprentices formal on-the-job training period he learns all aspects of his chosen work he gets to know the pen tools and the different machines their operations their capabilities he's taught the use of measuring instruments from the very simple to the very complex classroom training includes blueprint reading and Mathematics usually taught in the local high school through special arrangement with public school authorities those with special aptitude may become programmers repairing the coated tapes which operate numerically controlled machines many move ahead to become Machinists tool makers instrument makers a good many Advanced to supervisory positions and to technical positions such as tool and die designer some open their own shops becoming subcontractors to the firms they originally worked for [Music] since industrial plants and research establishments requiring Machining workers are located in almost all parts of the United States you can almost pick the section of the country in which you'd like to live [Music] if you think you might be interested in a career in Machining take this quiz simply answer yes or no to each question ready let's go you like to work with your hands are you handy with tools with equipment can you be counted on to carry out assignments to completion would you like to help bring to reality the ideas of research people would you like to program machines to operate automatically by the numbers you punched on tape would you like to understand the properties of metals and make them conform to your demands are you imaginative and can you visualize end products from rough sketches our quiz is over now let's see how you made out if you've answered yes to more than half the questions a career in Machining may be for you however before you decide be sure you know or find out about the many other careers open to young people in the world of work you'll want to see the other films in our library of career counseling films and choose from among all the careers you like can feel you're suited for if you still feel your choice is Machining get all the information you can about it discuss your interest with your high school machine shop or industrial arts teacher and your guidance counselor listen carefully to their advice it won't hurt to check in at your local U.S Employment Office either ask about Machining apprenticeships in your area visit your local Recruiting office there you can find out about the opportunities available for training in the Machining occupations and if your choice stands up get moving toward your goal take the courses your counselor advises you to courses that will help in your apprenticeship enroll in the Machine Shop program in your high school or if there is none take instruction part-time at an area Vocational School while continuing your regular studies at your regular high school if you do chances are good you'll start on the job as an advanced apprentice and receive higher than starting wages prospects are that you will be given credit for your in-school training and will be permitted to finish your apprenticeship and receive the top rate in less than the regular four years instruction After High School and the Machining occupations can be obtained at technical institutes and some junior colleges and of course in the armed services plan ahead so you'll be ready to take your place your rightful place in the world of work ready and able to advance in skill to develop your ability to grow in stature take responsibility in the career you have so carefully chosen [Music] what you gonna do your place what will you really do this is probably something that would be shown um along with the ASVAB test that the armed services vocational aptitude battery uh that would then show these films and some of these would be shown in the military uh for people to see like okay what trade are they interested in that we can have them work on while they're in service military service but this was written by Gene starbecker who of course did two of the most amazing uh bus safety films and then it happened and death zones over the top absolutely over the top and uh yeah thanks Gene all right uh let's see what we got we got another film set up on the scanner um I'm gonna try to do more film scanning uh live because we found I mean yesterday it was this amazing example of how great it was all right so this one is I think it's Encyclopedia Britannica safety in the home Joy [Music] foreign [Music] we laugh at accidents in a comedy because we know they are not real [Applause] in real life things are very different these patients are the lucky ones they survived the accidents in which they were involved how can we prevent accidents where do most of them occur do most accidents occur where people know they are doing dangerous work or where people feel safe here or here here or here the answer is that more accidents occur at home where people feel safe than anywhere else but why [Music] men and women who work at dangerous jobs take precautions to avoid accidents signs special clothing guard rails and a habit of thinking ahead all are designed to prevent accidents what can we do about accidents at home start with a very simple thing like walking into your own home how could that be dangerous what was the danger here was it the little brother or the toy it was really neither the danger was that bill didn't look ahead or think ahead here's a nice clean floor nothing on it looks dangerous unless someone runs and slips there was a choice to be made here to walk or run in the house the answer there's more room for running outside and it's usually less slippery out there Joe is usually hungry when he gets home from school so he prepares himself a snack when he's finished he finds himself with a choice to make should he leave the knife where it is or put it away when a knife is left lying around all sorts of unpleasant things can happen would it have been safer if Joe had tossed the knife into the sink okay a serious cut can easily be the result that's why when faced with this Choice Joe makes a series of Common Sense decisions he picks up the knife by the handle carries it with the tip of the blade away from him washes the knife with a cloth while holding the sharp edge away from him and dries it the same way with a thick cloth and The Cutting Edge away finally Joe puts the knife away in a safe place helping in the kitchen is one of Susan's household chores because there's a baby gate between the kitchen and the rest of the house she has a choice to make whenever she goes in or out to close and lock the gate behind her or leave it open which do you think she'll do if the gate is left open a few seconds is all her little brother needs to get into the kitchen and very likely into trouble you know what Susan will decide to do [Applause] bill has a problem he wants his fishing rod but he can't reach it it would be much easier and safer to get a ladder looks like the ladder is too short better get another ladder [Music] thinking ahead in this case means choosing the right ladder for the job and getting the fishing rod with ease it seems clear now that safety in the home is largely a matter of choice it's a little like a game of checkers each player thinks ahead and tries his best to make decisions that will help him win the game sometimes mistakes are made but a wise player learns from his mistakes in the matter of safety we are faced with choices decisions to be made let's look at a few such choices and let you make the decisions there are at least two ways of sitting in a chair one is like this the other is like this which way is safer the chair up or the chair down what do you say to avoid this the correct answer is chair down bill has finished taking a bath the choice empty the tub now or later you were right if you said empty the tub now it could be dangerous Susan is taking her winter clothes out of storage she has a choice to make leave the mothballs out or put them away you are right she should put them away in a high safe place especially set aside for all household items that are poisonous Joe has a bothersome cold his mother is out shopping his father is at work the medicine cabinet is filled with bottles what should he do wait for his mother to return or pick out the most likely looking bottle and take the medicine taking medicine without being absolutely sure of what you were taking can be very dangerous Joe decides to wait until his mother returns but did you notice something else the medicines were on the first shelf of the cabinet remember Joe has a little brother where should the medicines be kept Bill dinner before going to dinner bill has some choices to make should he turn off the Transformer power switch or pull the plug from the wall or both you probably made the same wise decision that bill does first he turns off the Transformer power switch then he pulls the plug and did you notice how he pulled it he took hold of the plug itself not the cord an electric cord that's constantly being tugged becomes cracked and worn sooner or later the wires become exposed and two things can happen this or this a cord that is properly handled will remain safe for a long time Bill's father has a new drill press in his Workshop it looks fascinating should Bill try it out or wait for his father to show him how to operate it [Music] it's much safer and easier to receive instructions before using the new tool we're seeing only some of the things that can happen in your own home you may feel that the only safe way to live is like this in straight jackets but you know that's not true you have another choice you can do all the things you want to do and have the fun of doing them as long as you think ahead and when faced with a choice make a decision for safety [Music] thank you [Music] [Applause] I can't believe we haven't shown it yet and that's the great thing
