e is is oh yeah sugar beat harvesting um been working with a collection of stuff that's at the National Archives and uh there's quite a bit of uh sugar beat harvesting footage uh one for each year it's like every year they're like here's a here's the highlights in Sugar beat harvesting in 1944 1943 1945 and I don't know maybe an educated eye would be able to look at it and say yeah do you see how radically different it is like the conveyor belt system has this uh thing on it thing thing ofama jig that sorts and I don't know anyways this is why we collect films here at AV Geeks and this is why we show you films uh and this is the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show and I am skip Alzheimer I like collecting Niche extremely Niche uh documentation on film uh it doesn't always translate into an interesting thing but I like it nonetheless and I Delight in showing it um so there you go uh that's what you're in for uh today and in general uh I hope everybody had a good Fourth of July and um appreciated freedom and uh don't take freedom for granted Etc uh behind me I have a film set up on the scanner and this I randomly pulled out of this box that is just filled it's brimming with film that has fallen off in reals and there's other stuff that I just don't know what they are and this one maybe I haven't seen it but maybe this is related to 4th of July it's called can we wave the flag too much huh no idea uh it has some water damage at the beginning uh as you'll see you'll see this beautiful horrible kind of like but then it clears up but I haven't watched this so I don't know which way this is going to go this might be something I get to apologize about at the end um but but here it is can we wave the flag too much enjoy in December of 1956 a listener wrote to Sydney L the love regarding his radio program know your history hour your programs are wonderful wrote The Listener but you're waving the flag too much we are now proud to present Mr Del's classic reply can we wave the flag too much is it possible to wave the flag too much provided of course that you wave it with Integrity is it possible to study Lincoln or Shakespeare too much is it possible to read the B Bible too much the great the good the true are inexhaustible for strength example and inspiration I believe that we are not waving our flag enough not nearly enough it seems to me that we are developing a timid tendency even apologetic about waving the Stars and Stripes walk up and down the streets on July the 4th and count the flags it is our nation's birthday a sacred day in world history and the most important day of America why isn't the flag flying from every rooftop and from every home and from every building this complacent attitude is strong evidence of cancer patriotic Decay the flag is a symbol of our national Unity it is the spirit of our undying Devotion to our country it stands for the very best that it is in us for loyalty character and faith in democracy isn't our flag a synonym of the United States of America does it not represent man's greatest noblest most Sublime dream is it not the Zenith of achievement the goal to which Generations have aspired ladies and gentlemen I believe it is time for us for the Mad rushing 20th century American to stop for a moment and think let us arrest our near reverential admiration of material success and return to the spiritual and ethical values let us imbue and rekindle in ourselves and our children the so-called oldfashioned way of patriotism a burning Devotion to the principles and ideals upon which our country was founded should not every home own and proudly display our flag on holidays and other such occasions isn't the flag Patrick Henry Jefferson Franklin Washington Nathan hail gettsburg and Valley Forge Paul Rivier Jackson and other great men and women who have given us our heritage when you look at the flag can't you see the alamoa rodor Pearl Harbor monitor in the marac lest we forget isn't the flag Flanders Fields baton iojima Nory Babe Ruth and Davy Crockett the great events of our past and present are wrapped up in our flag it is a symbol of this blessed Nation a giant in Industry education and commerce with millions of fural square miles we plants coal mines steel plants [Applause] our great Republic The Chosen infant destined to be Man's last and remaining hope for suffering Humanity a shining Beacon of light Noble and glorious The Haven for the oppressed and persecuted and truly God's gift to mankind that is what the flag means to me can we wave it too much I don't think so wow that is 19 70 I'm guessing uh 7s because that's you know moon landing but um yeah I mean Super patriotic uh it has the um yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus is that vibe to it that like is there a Santa Claus and then you know the reporter responds um so super patriotic and but it doesn't address the fact that people who were ashamed to F fly the flag were ashamed because there were others that were flying the flag and doing horrible things in the name of United States and America um and that was the frustrations so anyways uh this next film was awesome it's called the dragon wagon it's it's really great uh it's about soapbox deres and kid who just wants to win enjoy 1 2 three go every summer in Washington DC boys build their own racing cars and enter them in the local soapbox d I entered last year but I didn't win so I decided to build a new car and enter again this year my name is Clarence cter Jr but my friends call me c [Music] I came into lumber yard I to find the kind of wood I needed for my floorboard I wanted it not too heavy but heavy enough to carry the car it couldn't be a real expensive type of wood CU I only had $20 to spend on the whole [Music] car he suggested a piece of pan [Music] he showed me the first piece of wood grain was a little rough I said I should turn it down and hope that I might get a better piece he did show me a better piece of [Music] wood so I got that piece for my four [Applause] boy from man name Gregory Wilson Andre he didn't end last year but he endered this year he's always heckling me like most boys I love my mother I don't like it when she calls me to do something and I've already started on something else but uh she called me for quiet hle so I had to [Music] go I don't sing all that well Mr sha I guess he thinks that I sing well enough to stay in the choir sometimes I get bored a choir rehearsal singing songs and you sing them over and over again every now and then I sneak a look at uh the beams in the church and they start reminded me as a support to my racer because they curve around the top and then come straight down on the Sid I had to make sure Mr Shaw wasn't watching he he sees all he gets real mad when we don't sing like we're supposed to be singing he raises his voice he yells frankly I don't like it I like to get out of choir rehearsal I had trouble with the steering mechanism I couldn't figure out which way to wind the wire around the steering share so the car would turn the same way that I turn the wheel you have to figure out this way child and AR method my father he's a chemist and he works up at Howard University he uses that method I've thought about working as a chemist when I grow up it seems strange to me how that you can take two things and put them together and come out with something completely different from what you originally had such as a common table Sal you put sodium which can be a very dangerous chemical and chlorine which is a poisonous gas and you put those together and you come out with regular table salt I like this kind of work when I go into the service I plan to become a Power Trooper I've always wondered how it would feel just falling through space actually never even been up in an airplane yet because of my height the brakes have to be made a certain way when I get in I have to have room to stretch my legs time of inspection was drawing closer [Music] I was excited about finishing car knowing that I designed the car and built it give you some feeling of Pride the year before when I went up for inspection I had trouble various things that were wrong and inspectors checked the car and they sent me back and I had to make Corrections on [Music] it the inspection is held in a high school gymnasium some of those cars had pretty good designs and the competition would be pretty stiff inspector seemed like he was giving them good going over some the cars didn't pass they had to be taken back and worked [Music] on I wondered how tough they would be on me [Music] I didn't know for sure if I was going to [Music] pass well here it [Music] goes that steering mechanism I had trouble with it before the steing system seemed to be a little bit loose and let that go he wanted me to test up my brakes I maned on the brakes I finally passed there before the race I decid to go down the track see how was laid that was hunting just like it was the day that I raced the year before track see is long this year stand quiet more be filled with people cheering and yelling cars would be at the top of the hill if I won the national race I get $7,500 scholarship any college that I want to go to I would be the one to win [Music] 200 more boys in the race they come from all over Washington nearby Maryland Virginia the sobx Derby officials keep the cars at coolage high school gymnasium so the cars can't be altered and then they deliver all the cars on a truck when they take your car off you worried about them being careful with your car you don't want them to damage the steering system of the brakes the other boys had some pretty good Races they look like they'd be pretty fast I had to pop up my car so the wheels wouldn't get flat I got real tense when they started lining up the cars I wasn't in the first race Greg was in the first attorney general Kennedy started the [Music] race they racing a system of Heat and the winner from each heat of three cars comes back and races again one 2 [Music] [Music] 3 I don't know about the other guys but when I get on the ramp I'm no longer nervous cuz I'm too busy concentrating on other things like getting ready to steer my car getting in a good position so I can get speed out of the car when you're going down the hill 35 or 40 m an hour the wind's blowing in your face hear the people cheering and trying to stay down low in the car and steering straight so you can get maximum speed it's an exciting feel as we got to the bottom of the hill my car I weigh the car on my right and so he edged past me at the end of the race I finished in third place my time was 30 seconds and last year's race was about 31 or 32 seconds I did better this year I talked with the guy I raced against he was the one that came in second ladies and Gentlemen The New Washington DC so foox Derby Champion Eric Bon I wish I could have had the trophy he had better car and he [Applause] won so I congratulate him I wasn't happy about losing but um I have some plans for next year and changing design practice on my driving more I'll in again next year maybe I'll win [Music] pretty great that was 1963 um yeah uh kind of a slice of Life film um so pretty pretty fun all right uh let's learn about the stuff we throw away and this is part of that series uh We've shown other things 5,000 dumps um there's a couple other films it's Stuart Finley and Stuart Finley I think was a radio personality in the DC area and he created a film company and did a bunch of films about environmental concerns and I think he also did the green box um which is about dumpsters and just kind of talked about sanitary landfills um Etc so here's the stuff we throw away [Music] enjoy once upon a time there was a big American city that had a little problem a garbage strike as the days went by the little problem got bigger and bigger stacks of [Music] sacks how deep can this [Music] get in the better parts of town they had very high highest [Music] garbage but in the low rent areas they had very common garbage but it's a funny thing all over town Swanky areas and slums alike things smell just about the same pretty stinky finally the people of this big city settled their little strike and many of them to this day remember the moral of the story that effective Solid Waste Management is essential in this complicated 20th century Urban [Music] civilization only if we protect and preserve the natural environment can man survive our discards we call them solid wastes jeopardize our continuous existence the landscape becomes littered with dumps and then to reduce the volume we set fire to them thus diminishing one problem and creating another even more Insidious one air pollution Americans throw away over 5 l pounds of refu per person per day a staggering total of nearly 200 million tons a year unfortunately pollution is proportional to people collection and Disposal problems become aggravated when people live in concentrated areas it costs New York City $30 to collect and dispose of a ton of solid wastes throughout the country 133% of the population has no refuge collection service this results in indiscriminate dumping which litters the landscape and creates health hazards the president and the Congress have indicated great concern and programs are now underway to assist local communities the federal program which includes a wide variety of research and demonstration grants is predicated on one fundamental principle we must develop a better system ever wonder how solid wastes could be handled more effectively some new ideas from the Environmental Health Service here in a University of West Virginia laboratory A New Concept of incineration is being investigated refuse already ground to uniform consistency is fed into a fluidized bed reactor equipment commonly used by the chemical industry to obtain controlled reactions between gases and solids here the modified pilot reactor becomes a furnace the gas is air moving up the column under pressure and the suspended solids are a mixture of particles of burning refuse and inert sand which serves as a heat sink this is a simulation of the reaction occurring inside the furnace as the particles reach a fluidized state resembling boiling water at combustion [Music] temperatures the development of fluidized bed incineration is one of many varied projects conducted with federal aid under programs of the Bureau of solid waste management a branch of the Environmental Health Service Public Health Service US Department of Health education and Welfare the incinerator is still experimental but it already promises more complete and cleaner [Music] burning demonstration project Personnel examine the residue which constitutes only a small fraction of the original volume of the refug the fluidized bed incinerator stack emission contains far less particulate loading than conventional [Music] incinerators another University research project is examining Hospital wasts think how diverse they are in addition to the ordinary ones garbage paper and other dry combustibles and non-combustible such as bottles and cans hospitals generate unusual wastes related to medical treatment and surgical procedures that require special handling and disposal in order to develop data on the nature and volume of the various waste materials and to devise better management methods they are identified and carefully [Music] separated analysis of the different materials and their processing may even point to desirable changes in the design of Hospital service areas and waste handling equipment glass has few equals as a container it's chemically inert won't react with any other substance that's good but once millions of bottles and jars are discarded they won't burn or degrade they just lie there taking up space that's bad this team of Clemson University scientists is making making glass with a difference it's soluble in water but what good is it for holding say soda pop well first it's put into a chemical vapor deposition apparatus and coated with a very thin film of inert material then it will hold anything break the film and the glass slowly dissolves so does the solid waist handling chore chickens and other animals concentrated in commercial cages and feed Lots contribute increasingly to the solid waste load in this University of California experimental closed hydraulic system water flushes the manure to a high rate oxidation pond there its nutrients are reclaimed photosynthetically in the production of algae the digested sludge can be used as fertilizer and the dried algae as supplemental food for ruminant animals resources from waste through [Music] research these students inspecting an abandoned strip mine are a new breed their Graduate Studies emphasize environmental control several universities are expanding their curricula to provide qualified engineers in this crucial area recognition that specialized training as well as imaginative research is essential for Effective Solid Waste Management and the total protection of our [Music] environment solid wastes are in the bag in barington Rhode Island The Heavy paper container holds mixed refuse and is deposited bag and all in a sanitary landfill the simple efficiency system after 3 years demonstration is proving easier for householders a Time and Labor saver for workers cleaner and more sanitary for everyone Town's people favor the system and a sharp increase in the volume of wastes collected indicates they're making greater use of a better [Music] service in a rural community house-to-house collection is economically unfeasible and random dumping and littering is unbearable Chilton County Alabama found a solution it's keeping itself clean and green with a network of Neighborhood Storage receptacles residents deposit their household refu whenever it's [Music] convenient the containers are emptied twice weekly and the accumulations placed in a central sanitary landfill shared with the county seat of Clanton and three smaller municipalities these cities continue to provide house-to-house collection but have closed their open dumps throughout the county about 90 small random dumps and their rat populations have been replaced by about the same number of Handy and tidy containers and one specially equipped truck a pretty fair [Music] exchange the container and truck ideas applied in a different way in witchar Falls Texas here the containers have wheels the waste load is transferred to the mother truck for disposal at a sanitary landfill while a train of containers is used to make collections along the Route all data on routs load weights equipment and Personnel usage are computerized daily data analysis relates the type and volume of waste generation to land use residential commercial and Industrial and will per development of a complete management model simulating the container train collection and Disposal system with this model Optimum use and expansion can be projected as population grows and land use patterns change demonstrating a systems analysis approach to Solid Waste Management [Music] planning an open dump is bad enough a burning one is worse fire consumes some of the combustible waste but scourges the area with smoke and Ash and rats and flies survive it here at cleworth in the heart of Metropolitan Washington DC a burning dump was transformed into a model sanitary landfill under a health education welfare demonstration Grant deliveries of refu and incinerator residue were spread and compacted and completely covered with 6 to 8 in of Earth by the end of each day the completed fill contoured and graded is being developed as a recreational area by the District of Columbia and the National Park Service demonstrating the value of the sanitary landfill technique in reclaiming a blighted area another kind of scar on the landscape an abandoned strip mine suppose it could serve as a burial ground for solid wastes and be reclaimed in the process sanitary landfill demonstrations are being conducted at this mine site and two others in alagan County Maryland by the county the state and the cities of Frostburg and Cumberland they provide centralized service to 60,000 people have eliminated cumberland's open burning dump and smaller scattered ones and will eventually restore these old mining sites to their natural beauty here's a small mountain of refu near the Atlantic Ocean at Virginia Beach an Innovative sanitary landfill conceived by the state director of Virginia's Solid Waste activities it will take all of the city's refuge for several years to build Mount Trashmore as the Wags call it to a height of about 60 ft above ground level a bowl around an artificial Lake and something of a landmark in an area of flat terrain a very useful Landmark though grading already anticipates its ultimate purpose someday this will be an expanse of seats an Amphitheater with a Soapbox Derby track and other facilities for the enjoyment of this Coastal Resort's residents and [Music] visitors some Coastal communities are considering disposal of their solid wastes by dropping them well offshore at sea but too little is yet known of the ecological effects of this practice certainly most of the nation has no choice but to use the land for disposal in the process the land can be despoiled or it can be protected and enhanced sanitary landfill techniques make the [Music] difference this prototype press is known as the monster perhaps it should should be called the magician it makes solid wastes disappear the machine receives refu by the truckload and in a series of coordinated operations compacts it extrudes it in the bottom of a trench all the while digging the trench backfilling it and compacting and leveling the Earth this new variation on the sanitary landfill concept is being used on 100 Acre Site by the Niagara County New York Solid Waste agency its members include eight of the county 12 towns as well as the cities of Lockport North tananda and Niagara Falls the agency disposes of the solid waste of a quarter of a million people and is demonstrating and evaluating a novel new landfilling [Music] machine here in King County Washington which also includes the city of Seattle solid wastes are being loaded into another prototype landfill machine this when constructed to the County's own specifications the mole performs about the same functions as the monster except that the trench is excavated and backfilled by auxiliary [Music] equipment the monster and the mole represent new Concepts in sanitary landfilling and a great deal more experience in their operation is needed they may prove feasible and economically practicable largely under conditions where established sanitary landfill techniques cannot be used but in such special situations their contributions to good solid waste management will be invaluable the possible advantages of grinding solid wastes in a hammer type reduction Mill before deposi in a landfill are being demonstrated by the city of Madison Wisconsin Milling refu substantially reduces its volume and effectively extends the life of the fill site the mill is simply constructed easy to operate and quite reliable the milled product spreads easily on the fill compacts and grades well and settles less than unmilled refu the product is not odorous and a control area left without Earth cover has attracted no rats observations so far indicate that the quantity of material rejected by the mill is quite low and that the use of the milled refu considerably improves the quality of the [Music] landfill m refu is also being composted in several projects such as this one conducted by The Joint us Public Health Service Tennessee Valley Authority composting project at Johnson City Tennessee composting is not the one miraculous solution to all disposal problems but it does convert organic refu to a useful product and in some situations may be more practicable than landfilling or incineration incineration is like the little girl children sing about when it's good it's very very good and when it's bad it's horrid [Music] about 360 incinerators handle almost 10% of the nation's total waste load but no more than 50 of these facilities are adequate some of the others can be remodeled the rest should simply be replaced and additional ones will be needed as the volume of solid waste increases the Shippensburg Pennsylvania sanitary Authority is demonstrating a new type Ty of incinerator because it must dispose of the solid wastes of some 12,500 people without a suitable area being available for a sanitary landfill the combustible refu goes into a facility specially designed to meet Air Pollution Control standards and eliminate environmental health hazards while reducing the Refuge to the smallest possible volume [Music] the heart of the furnace is this stainless steel perforated drum revolving in a steady stream of air like a giant cloth dryer to achieve maximum combustion the rotary great incinerator as it is called may prove to be an efficient economical means of solid waste disposal for many relatively small urban areas and in gener Ator stack shouldn't smoke this one doesn't except when it's made to it's part of an experimental furnace built to study the control of emissions through the nozzles ringing this firebed directed streams of air can be introduced for cleaner burning as investigators alter combustion conditions they monitor the composition of gases flowing upward through the stack and into the atmosphere [Music] 70% of America's Municipal incinerators do not have adequate Air Pollution Control devices this Environmental Health Service staff research project is representative of the efforts to advance the technology of incineration [Music] a grape vineyard next to an open burning dump just doesn't make any [Music] sense the dump is closed as all local cities the county the state and the federal government cooperated to devise a unique trailblazing study of the solid waste problems facing a 1200 squ M area including the City of Fresno California uncoordinated methods of handling Municipal industrial and agricultural wastes were analyzed and a total Integrated Waste Management plan devised most plans are concerned simply with handling wastes the Fresno study using systems analysis focuses on managing solid wastes to achieve the desired end product throughout the urban rural region unlighted land clean air and water a pleasant healthful environment sanitary land in and composting are emphasized with very little incineration and greater resources recovery as a future goal the more we consume and use the more we throw away an endless stream of solid wastes with technical problems and environmental dangers that have become National in scope these research development and training activities are a portion of the national search for new and improved methods there are many more projects and there will be many others all supported in part by the US Department of Health education and Welfare under the solid waste disposal act providing federal assistance to the technological advancement of solid waste management whether local and state governments and private Enterprise can apply the advancements depends upon the willingness of the American people to bear the cost saving the environment will be expensive but then another one is available at any [Music] price say what you will about uh Stuart Finley uh Incorporated films they got JY uh background music you know we're seeing like footage of Burning uh burning dumps and like rats and flies and human waste and just but it's to a good a good beat so it uh it's pretty great um all right so we're going to do an experiment uh I have been going through this box this up and see what a nightmare this is this is a giant box of mths 16 mm films kind of and there's many more boxes of like this like I have a lot of stuff it's very nice neatly organized the vast majority of it neatly organized but then I have these boxes where it's just like they showed up in a box I'm like I'll put it over here and I'll get to it then 15 years later um I'm getting to it so anyways so I have a film here it's very shrunk uh it might not make it but uh and in fact the beginning the title uh mosquitoes and malaria and I couldn't play it it's it's all torn so we're going to try this and see what happens see what happens uh let me change the title mosquitoes and malaria got to love me typing it's good good times all right and then we'll we'll do is we will uh turn off the grading and we'll see what happens we'll see how far we can go without the film breaking or some other horrible thing happening all right enjoy and dangerous of the world's most dreaded diseases malaria and yellow until 1898 was supposed that the term of malaria in the air and was drawn into the human system by but in that year British Army doctor Donald engaged inarching IND the the and transmitted by its fight to human beings laor research reveals the particular mosquito which carries the germ is aures of the anoly then the universal campaign the yeah I'm going to call it that is not quite working um yeah so basically what's happening is the film is is Warped uh as it begins to shrink the acetate begins to form makes a stinky vinegar smell uh and then it just doesn't lie flat in the gate and because it's not lying flat in the gate it's not lying flat against the optical sound head so that's why the the audio was muffled and you also heard a lot of surface noise uh also it's not lying flat in the optical gate so that's why it was kind of doing like this so I have another scanner that has a warp gate that we can kind of put down and maybe try to get um visual information off of it uh so that's what I'm going to do is I'm going to pass this on and maybe we get to watch it maybe we don't I don't know but um everything's an experiment here at a Geeks uh even a Geeks is an experiment it's like what would happen if I collected a bunch of these films and then I showed them what would happen if I started putting them on VHS tapes and started selling them what would happen if I Ted around and showed them what would happen if I started selling stock footage what would happen if I started putting it on Facebook well obviously Facebook uh decided to cancel my account um what would happen if I put it on YouTube what would happen if I you know all these are experiments and I would say in general most experiments are good have been amazing uh and that is because of you because of the the uh format of what we're doing and your feedback um this is a arousing success and you know part of this was I started doing this during Co beginning of Co and was depressed that I wasn't going to be able to show films because I was doing like four shows a month uh live and you folks showed up and I appreciate that that very much appreciate that and so yesterday I did a lot of counting of my blessings for the freedoms that I have but also the blessings that I have uh and you are part of those blessings so thank you so much for tuning in for commenting even if they're dumb comments it's it's fine um
