e e e I would glad and every time R my glasses get fed up when I get stuck on rocks but it's fun it's fun getting stuck [Music] you think it's dangerous no really really I mean a guy in our boat don't even want them don't even know how to swim I seen little kids coming out on this thing oh they got a life preserver they should make it well I don't wear one that much you should wear one cuz it's a lot safer I didn't wear one lash part cuz my knees were hurting real bad and I had to put it under my knees you never fall out did you know a lot about it before you tried it no he's he's going seeing where this don't no where is he there he is guys the water get over here get oh help help come on come on moving water has an awesome Force Swift deceptive this paddler turned that Force against himself by actions which seemed instinctive let's take another look everyone capsizes it's part of the sport but it's what the paddler does in the water that leads to trouble instinctively he tries to stand in the fast current and his foot becomes trapped under a rock Instinct can be wrong the river's energy is deceptive it flows beneath the surface out of sight out of mind working the bottom transporting the load but the energy is always there and the river Runner must never forget it his game is avoiding confrontation and that takes more than Instinct it takes knowledge of the river preparation and [Music] skill no question pops up more more on a river trip than what's around the bend and so it should because water and rocks team up for some extraordinary effects a hole and and a hydraulic are are both cases where you have a lot of water coming over a ledge or a rock dropping down the force of the the water coming down over that rock makes a depression in the surface below uh so you actually do get a hole and the surface water comes back Upstream to fill that hole in so you you have water coming down making a depression and then surface water coming back up to fill it in and a person or or a boat or a raft can get caught in that depression and not be able to get out easily rafts are particularly dangerous I think in holes you think of them as big and stable uh but once it's in the hole it's probably more dangerous than a canoe or a kayak because it's so big that if you you wash out fall out of the boat or it flips you're have to come up underneath that Ra's caught in there and if you come up under the floor you can't get a breath the uh the hole the water doesn't really hold you under it keeps bringing you back up but then pushes you under again so you get circulated around and around in it and if you're careful you can get a breath every time you come up but if the Wrath is in the hole with you you may come up underneath and not be able to get that breath of air that can make the difference so you might might be really stuck under it particular danger in in a dam or many artificial uh obstructions in the river is that they're uniform and even all the way across the river so there's no point at which there's a downstream current going on through the uh pole there's a uniform even backwash that doesn't give you a spot to get out if the tire hadn't been in there I really don't think we would have lived that was just pure luck maybe the grace of God that it had been floating around in there for days too we would have been sucked right under the boats before us like about three of them had gone over the damn fine and we were the last boat and as we went over it I just remember turning completely upside down and all of a sudden I was just in the water and struggling to get out of the boat and I was reaching for the boat but the boat wasn't there it was slipping away it was getting pulled away and we were getting pulled further and further you know under the water and up up closer to where it comes over and and we were lucky we got out because the boat never made it the boat boat just broke up in pieces you often don't realize how strong that current is unless something stops you so that you get the full force of the current against you but it just has an incredible power then flow varies greatly during the year and in narrow sections of a river the water can rise many feet above normal as a result the river ends up carrying more than just water lodge debris is a serious concern for River Runners because its occurrence is so unpredictable at higher water with Swift Current a spot like this becomes a real Hazard uh the Water picked up all kinds of debris along the banks logs tree limbs uh and they wash down the river and tend to get caught in restricted places where you have rocks that come close together narrow passage cracks they you get a lot of this debris catching and and forming strainers and can be very hazardous to a or particularly to a swimmer someone's in the water uh more so than the Rocks because the rocks make a cushion as the current comes along to a rock the rock is solid and diverts the water so that it will push the person or the boat on around most of the times but uh where we've got logs and limbs caught between rocks the water can go on through but there sometimes isn't room for a boat to get through so the uh Power of the water can hold that boat or person against the trees and the force is just hard to imagine unless you've been caught there it uh it can hold a person there so that they're just helpless can't can not even move an arm or a leg just because of the force of the water holding them that way be sure that you know what's around the bin cuz I've come down just below here on this River and uh a section we' run hundreds of time coming around one day and there was a log completely across the river there no way of getting through and if we hadn't seen it in time to stop in an Edie the raft would have been pinned underneath it probably and and I don't know what would have happened but you want to always be sure you've got a stopping place you can see far enough ahead to have a clear path or a place to stop and Scout from logs holes waterfalls they're no problem for the boater who can recognize them early but there is another more Insidious danger that is invisible yet it surrounds an over whms as surely as the biggest hole the tragic scenario of cold water and ill-prepared boers is played out again and again on our Rivers the day is 80° and yet the water is 30° I knew we had a disaster I knew everybody was over when I was in the water I just knew it we just weren't prepared for the cold the tremendous toll that the cold water took on our bodies I finally got out of the water and I think it was in water up to my knees and I didn't think I was going to make it at that point uh my legs had lost all their strength uh I got out on the shore and really collapsed two of the people didn't make it U neither of those people were wearing life jackets they were both hanging on to the boat for a short Peri period of time uh he let go and he was seen going down the river rolling over and over uh and a life preserver following him they were the best swimmers in the group and yet the swimming strength really didn't mean a thing the body wasn't recovered I think for oh four months down the Connecticut River Equipment is an integral part of Whitewater sport it allows for that margin of error which all boers need from time to time when their judgment is a Miss Beyond such crucial items as a life jacket throw rope first aid kit and flotation the river will suggest what equipment to bring is the river cold is it shallow and Rocky is it remote and inaccessible the Boer should choose his equipment to match the conditions of the river while the right gear can go a long way toward providing a safe trip ultimately the group needs something else something that each person should have in his head before he ever puts on the river you should probably Scout this next one look right the bottom of that truck it's a sense of the river a sense of moving water the surprises the power the potential with knowledge of the river and the right equipment a paddler is off to a good beginning but he needs one more not so small item called skill skill enables the body to do what is in the mind it translates that sense of water into a motion there you go a motion which must be learned step by step okay I want you to [ __ ] your paddle there really [ __ ] your wrists over okay and I want you to go over wait a second until you feel that your hands are up above the water okay you'll feel feel the air on them and then I'll grab your paddle and I'll position your I'll sweep it out and then you just snap your hips okay teaching the body to perform is a necessary aspect of Whitewater sport frustrating as the learning process may be it is far easier with the aid of experienced teachers and away from the urgency of Swift Current real white water is a poor training ground for basic skills that could be learned on a lake over all right paddle correct mhm that's good all right you brought your head up a little it's a simple fact the paddler who has learned to get the most from himself and his craft has more options when problems arise and as his skill develops so does the intensity of the water he can safely handle but his aim remains constant on moving water the boater strives for harmony not confrontation knowledge and skill are his tools he strives to sense the water to discover a logic in its chaos to draw from its energy to make the power his own [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] w w [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] m [Music] oh [Music] w [Music] the coast of Southwest Africa is an unforgiving land of Stark rocks and wandering Dooms its Shores are pounded by great Breakers and swept by Cold currents its weather alternates between wind and F fog and Blasting Sun it has but one Saving Grace there are [Music] diamonds these graceful Canyons were sculptured Beneath the Sea many thousands of years ago by moving water armed with abrasive Sands and gravels the gravels contained diamonds and when the ocean level receded the gravels were left behind now that they have been removed by mining the strange shaped of these ancient undersea canyons are revealed in other parts of the mine the old sea floor was nearly flat and after the main part of the diamond gravels have been removed by machines native sweepers carefully clean the cracks in the [Music] Bedrock occasionally they find greasy bits of hardened fire diamond crystal are there similar deposits on the present ocean bottom Britt Brock and Willard baskam plan an expedition to find out the casa Coast is a small freighter converted for geophysical work it leaves Cape Town's beautiful Harbor and heads North to the diamond Coast where it will probe the seafloor with sound to determine the thickness of the undersea gravels and the shapes of the Rocks [Music] beneath once outside the harbor the ship feels the Great South Atlantic swell and begins to Buck it will be a rough trip but happy porposes alongside of the traditional sailor's Omen of a lucky voyage the sun sets but the captain remains at his post knowing that many a vessel has been wrecked on this dark coast and that only the Vigilant Will [Music] Survive the following morning the geophysical equipment is launched first a spark gap is streamed behind the ship when a high voltage electric current surges through this cable a spark leaps the Gap creating a small explosion and then a hydrophone which listens for The Echoes of those explosions from the undersea rocks is put over side the hydrophones trail well behind away from the noise of the ship on a cable that is booed up by a plastic hose [Music] in the ship's laboratory the spark generating equipment is started each time the spark jumps here a similar one jumps at the end of one of the cables and radiates a pulse of sound the hydrophone at the end of the other cable detects The Echoes from the various undersea [Music] layers thus the rocks structure is [Music] recorded the flowing paper is periodically examined and the instrument settings adjusted to give the best results that pair of cables will follow the ship for 10,000 km as it goes back and forth in and out along the desert Coast where Dunes rise hundreds of feet from the sea and shifting underwater sandb bars are an extra Hazard that keeps the Captain constantly on the [Music] bridge often the work continues after dark when a technician makes the final marks on a chart and takes it below for [Music] study in the onetime cargo hold two geologists examine the record for evidence of gravel deposits and for undersea features like the ancient sea cliffs and canyons seen a Shore the dark lines are the recorded Echoes of rocks buried beneath sea and sediment but determining exactly what the Echoes mean is not a simple matter it requires thoughtful geological interpretation are the diamonds it's much too soon to say our search has just begun determining the thickness of the undersea gravel beds is only half the geophysicist problem he must also know the ship's position precisely so that a chart can be made of any deposits that are discovered precise position at C requires survey points on land and so a Shore party starts out across the trackless desert in Land Rovers their job is to find the old survey monuments and check their positions [Music] they resurvey each point and then they push on across the [Music] Wasteland at each Monument a radar Beacon is set up an electronic package that shines like a lighthouse on the ship's radar the shore party leader radios to the ship our Beacon is operating do you see it the ship's radar antenna scans The [Music] Horizon bright and clear answers the radio operator on the ship okay on to the next [Music] one there are various hazards but these are a normal part of desert [Music] operations and so the shore party moves steadily up the coast leaving behind a trail of electronic [Music] monuments each Beacon makes a bright spot on the ship's radar screen with this equipment the ship's position can be determined within a few feet in an adjacent room on the ship the automatic position plotter is set up on a chart of the coast the position of the needle is controlled by the radar so that it traces a ship's motion on the chart the operator adjust the range rings on the radar scope until they exactly coincide with the bright spots made by the beacons on Shore then the distance to the beacons can be read directly every 3 minutes the operator pushes a button and the ship's position is pricked into the chart beyond the old monuments new survey lines must be run across the desolate Namib Desert the skeleton Coast is a hard country inhabited only by the ghosts of diamond miners who worked here before World War I in those days this Camp was supplied by camel and oxen the only way of crossing the desert but now we use a helicopter the Skylar but the helicopter cannot operate alone its fuel must be brought in by another aircraft and so the party radios for a small rugged cargo plane called the beaver to bring in gasoline and supplies for emphasis they spell out the message in beer bottles and Survey Flags send the beaver and the Beaver comes it takes off from a desert air strip circles above a mirage zooms out across the coast of Southwest [Music] Africa north it flies along the Great Wall of sand where camel Supply trains were ever in danger of being trapped against the Steep sand slope by a rising [Music] tide it flies over the breakers and sand sandb bars and lagoons over a flight of white [Music] pelicans and over a herd of gsach the great desert [Music] antalope Beaver buzzes the camp to alert the party before a lighting on a vast natural airport where no plane has ever before landed and now with plenty of fuel Skylark can go where it pleases over the Namib sea of sand the surveyors are but tiny dots on the vast Dunes entirely dependent on the helicopter for life but it is doubtful that a man could walk out of this desert alive if it failed to [Music] appear a theodoly is set up to measure the angle between the last survey point and the one ahead neither would be visible except for a flash of sun reflected in a mirror the angle between the distant points is measured and recorded the telomer is an electronic tape measure it measures Distance by measuring the time for radio waves to travel between a pair of [Music] instruments when the measurements are completed the helicopter goes back to pick up the second survey party then it Leap Frogs the men and their equipment from 10 m behind to 10 m [Music] ahead even in a sandstorm the work goes on for the navigation beacons must keep well ahead of the [Music] ship one day the ship radios that one of the radar beacons many miles behind us has stopped operating it must be adjusted before the oceanic survey can continue so back over the waves of sand the Skylark goes in search of the tiny Speck that guides the ship the technician removes the cover makes an adjustment and calls the ship now do you see it fine [Music] at Sea waiting for the beacons It's a lazy day and an old friend comes to [Music] visit the water looks so inviting the geologist de to go below and look at the bottom and compare the Rocky features with those Exposed on [Music] land another underwater television camera and light is lowered so that those on the ship can see what the divers see [Music] the divers descend into a world of bless where the only sound is their own [Music] breathing they are not quite alone an octopus Dives with them to the seafloor where it glowers ferociously and tries to look as large as possible but the divers are concerned only with geology they are looking for rocks similar to those on Shore they find only sand and a Bat Ray disturbed by these unlikely Intruders turns and flies off into the Gloom the octopus deciding against Valor also fleases the sand jetting himself to the protective darkness of some weed hung Rock unwittingly he has led the geologists to the Rocks they seek they examine a rocky ledge and chip off fragments so they can see what a fresh rock surface looks like [Music] and then on again but soon it is time to return to the ship up we go okay and thus one more link is added to the chain of knowledge sometimes the sea is calm and sometimes it's not so [Music] calm the weather gets steadily worse but the work goes on until a rising storm forces us to stop operations for the day [Music] he [Music] even the worst weather must end and eventually the ship returns to the column of table Bay in Cape Town Harbor the splash of the anchor stirs the seabirds the data are taken ashore to be converted into useful Maps now we have a detailed chart of the undersea rocks the yellow patches are soft sediments Sands and gravels the blank is areas are Baron Rock the dash lines Mark the rim of the hard sediments the next move is to take samples of the gravels for one must actually recover diamonds from the seafloor to prove that they are there since the samples must be systematic we plan to drill lines of holes at regular intervals Dr David Smith indicates one line where 30 such samples will be taken and processed a new sampling system is required with millions of Rond at stake our Engineers work against the time deadline to construct a ship that can accurately sample the undersea deposits a dredge pump is swung aboard special propellers are made ready a Derek for handling drill pipe and dredging equipment is [Music] assembled a con Soul on the bridge makes this ship easy to maneuver for this is Rock Eater of Cape Town in record time its conversion is completed and it sails for the diamond [Music] Coast Rock eater is the world's first ship designed specifically for mineral exploration on the run up the coast it is steered automatically by the gy pilot the captain merely sets the controls and watches the radar [Music] [Music] Rock eater drops anchor above a gravel bed that was detected by the seismic [Music] survey the captain watching from the bridge gives orders for adjusting the anchor [Music] lines and the chief made on The Vow he's the orders on the intercom and directs the winch operators [Music] the chief geologist aboard checks the ship's position visually by siding on monuments ashore with a pelorus he sings out the angle and it's plotted on the chart [Music] here we will drill for [Music] diamonds the driller lifts the brake and starts the pumps drill starts [Music] downward as it goes down water is sucked up the center of the drill pipe it flows along the pipe to the left when the white stream of water turns brown we will know the bit is drilling into the bottom [Music] there the drilling is tough but the bit grinds its way [Music] downward and now gravel is Flowing along along this pipe and onto the screens which sort it according to size the small gravel which contains the diamonds goes through the screen into bins below geologist watch The Bouncing pieces of rock for shist the solid rock which will indicate that the drill has completely penetrated the [Music] gravels there that's it retract the drill [Music] [Music] Rock eater drills 30 such holes each day now the overside discharge is white again and already Rock eater is moving to a new spot to start the next hole below deck the plant operators get ready to process the sorted gravel for diamonds this jigging motion causes the denser Stones including the diamonds to concentrate in the center while a light material flows over the rim periodically the trays are removed and upended on a sorting table so that the concentrates can be examined for [Music] diamonds there's one diamonds diamonds from under the [Music] sea e [Music] I love you no I I really mean it I mean it too didn't say personally guarantee you that if you if you play with these girls you are going to get VD there are one or two things you can do which just might help prevent it and all of you better pay attention to this whether you think right now you might get caught or not stay sober when you go out on the town sober enough to remember to use a prophylactic carry them with you and be sure to use them they're
