foreign hi everybody welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and adjust our camera so that we are in frame uh yeah so that was some raw uh camera original materials from a Coronet for a film that probably became something related to occupations so that's original Kodachrome they would take that they would make cut it up make prints from it uh and then edit it together and then it would take the negative and then put it on a soundtrack and that's I'm way over simplifying it but that's where how educational films are made um all that raw footage and we have a lot of raw footage that we got from the folks that own cornet so we've been slowly going through digitizing stuff anyhow we watch old 16 millimeter films did I say I'm skip Alzheimer I don't know that's who I am um and uh you guys are here to watch them with us so very much appreciated we're gonna go straight to the scanner uh and watch uh film by learning incorporation of America called um why people have special jobs enjoy foreign [Music] [Music] thank you once long ago there were no stores anywhere since there were no stores everybody was very busy doing all the things that needed to be done each person picked his own fruit and berries each person caught his own fish and hunted his own birds and animals for food [Music] everyone planted seeds in group everyone had to make his own clothes out of animal skins or grasses everyone had to make his own place to live or live in a cave that was already there you couldn't just buy tools either since there were no stores everyone had to make his own tools out of stones and pieces of metal that he found in the ground since everybody had to do so many different things it was hard to be good at everything one day long ago a man made a spinning top for his little boy out of a piece of wood when the other children saw the top they all wanted one just like it father can you make me a top that spins I want one too daddy make me a top anybody know how to make tops uh-uh nope but the other fathers didn't know how so they went to the man and asked him to make tops for their children too I'm sorry if I made a top for each of your children I wouldn't have any time left for my hunting and fishing when would I make clothes and plant seeds and look for food in the woods wait a minute I have an idea I always catch more fish than I can use today when I go fishing I'll catch a large fish for you then will you make it top for my little boy sure if I don't have to go fishing today I'll have time to make you a talk this morning I picked three baskets of berries I'll give you one if you make a top for my little boy well all right if I don't have to go looking for berries I'll have time to make another top for you I can make a strong jacket of animal skins for you nobody can make jackets as well as I can well then I'll have time to make a top for your boy I always had trouble making jackets after the others had gone there was still one boy whose father had not yet come home hunting you'll need many pieces of wood to make all those tops if I go and collect good pieces of wood will you make it tough for me to hey that's a good idea it'll save me time you go collect wood and I'll make you a top two soon the man was busy making tops all day he didn't have to look for wood or collect berries or go hunting or fishing he didn't have to make clothing out of animal skins people brought him all the things he needed so that he would make them tops for their children the man was very happy he didn't have to do all these other things and he loved making tops the other fathers saw the man making tops all day long and still getting everything he needed the fisherman said maybe an official day and do nothing else that's what I do best I'll catch a lot of fish then anybody who wants fish can give me some food or clothes or tools or toys and I'll give them a fish I think I'll make jackets all day long no more fishing hunting and building for me and I'll pick berries and fruit every day in exchange for the things I need the man who made tops began to make other toys because all the children near and far now had tops he made toys out of stone and wood and clay and set them up outside his house it was a real toy store every day people came to get toys for their children they brought him berries and meat fish vegetables and clothing in exchange for toys before long right near the toy store a new store opened the fishermen started a fish market then the berry picker opened a fruit stand next door to him the hunter opened a meat and poultry store so in the jacket maker turned his cave into a clothing store one of the men became a house Builder another a tool maker one boy even went from door to door selling wood today a man wouldn't have time to be a very good toymaker and a house waiter hello an emergency I'll be right there and the good doctor and a good fireman it would be very hard today if everybody had to do everything for himself plant hunt fish collect and make things when people do one kind of work they can pick out the kind of work they like to do life today is very different from the way it was long ago before there were any stores and all because the top maker discovered that he could get all the fish berries cloves and wood he needed just by making cups [Music] so I don't know if anybody said about it in the comments um uh we're missing the caveman that kind of came and said uh I just made an app where you all can list what you're good at and uh we'll ex process the payments for you uh the credits for you and then we'll take a small maintenance fee for it um I don't know 30 40 and you can build a business and advertise to other people about what you're doing without exchanging cash it's great and I know some of you were saying uh like where's the taxes I don't understand where's the taxes well this next film is why we have taxes let me type it out enjoy one second thank you [Music] [Music] once long ago there was a town that had no policeman there was a clothes maker a house Builder and his son Alexander who helped him a sandal maker a basket maker a baker and a farmer there was also a thief in town [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] uh-huh stop thief he stole one of my baskets he stole one of my loaves of bread he's stolen things from everyone we'll call a town meeting oh it's a very serious matter somebody must catch the thief before he steals again now all volunteer not me I have to water my plants and take my food to Market me can't you see I have to cut and make clothes I want to clearly understood that I am a baker not a thief catcher who's it gonna be we've gotta catch the thief who'll do it friends friends don't get excited there must be a way above all [Music] I don't know why he gets so excited I have just had an eye what we need catch the thief and then guard our goods and keep us safe good idea that's what we need all right all right friends who shall it be or not me to earn money I have to make sandals all day how about your son Builder Alexander yeah he's strong and smart he could be our policeman what do you say Son Well father you know I've never been too fond of house building but if I become a policeman how would I get money you Mr basket maker you make and sell baskets to earn money and you Mr farmer you grow and sell fruit and vegetables to get money all of you sell something to get money if I were your policeman I'd have nothing to sell like you fellas yes that's a problem I I have an idea but well maybe it won't work though go ahead tell us well um if each of us gave a little bit of the money that we make growing selling and fixing things together there'd be enough to pay the young man to be our policeman he would work for all of us so uh all of us would help pay him money to buy the things he needs good idea I'm willing yeah then I'm your policeman here's my money he is mine here's mine they called the little bit of money that everyone gave taxes when all the tax money was put together it was as much as the others got for making and growing and selling things and Alexander did make a good policeman [Music] all right on your feet now come with me you'll have to return the things you stole all right everything was the wrong size anyway the thief took back all the things he had stolen except for the farmer's Tomatoes it was too late for that so he had to work for the farmer for three days to make up for the stolen tomatoes today in every city in town there are some people who work for everybody at the same time people like policemen firemen teachers garbage collectors and mailmen they work for everybody and are paid by taxes collected from everyone just like the taxes that made it possible for that little town long ago to have a policeman and that made everyone happy well almost everyone [Music] laughs um fascinating I'm sure there's lots we could say about all of that um especially uh in a Libertarian World um but here's a film civil defense film uh that were paid for by taxes and um this actually features see some more scenes that I've found in the Devo beautiful world video that uh I've been kind of slowly looking forward to see if I could find different scenes from different films and then I've got two or three so this is yet another one this is called facts make the difference and it's pretty great it starts out pretty great so enjoy [Music] this is fiction when we face reality we must be prepared to base our decisions on facts in disaster situations the need for accurate information is most immediate and crucial information comes from a variety of sources it must be translated into facts that are meaningful to the user and his mission this is not a complex process it is part of everyday living we use it when we cross the street [Music] the weather [Music] determine the best way to fight a fire make an estimate of the situation foreign or save a life [Music] in each of these situations a decision was made based on facts and facts make the difference without the facts you may well find yourself in the position of a fire dispatcher who received a frantic call [Music] ing My Two children attract inside hurry please do something do something that was the firefighter's job they had the time equipment and Personnel to save the children but where would they go the woman failed to give her address to the dispatcher a fact she ignored to understand the mechanics of getting the facts let us examine the steps this includes collecting information processing it and disseminating the facts to those who need them let's begin with the first step collection of information any official of government has certain inherent responsibilities for the collection of information to meet this responsibility a reporting system must be established within the framework of government based on its existing resources information may be of a general and non-technical nature which can be reported by anyone on a geographical basis or technical information related to specialized function which is reported by operating services such as police fire Public Works Health agriculture or a shelter manager who may report information to the Emergency Operating Center just as newspapers use reporters who are specialists in their fields like science Sports politics government uses Personnel assigned to each functional or technical area to report the facts to get the information needed to make a decision on a specific problem these people working together to gather information should be aggressive accurate reliable and observant they should know and understand people facilities areas and Communications and they should cover both geographical and functional information to be effective people in this information system should be organized trained equipped and assigned well in advance of the emergency they should be welded into a skillful team for facts do make the difference everyone involved in Emergency Operations should be conscious of the need for accurate information you should be alert he should be aware he should recognize that information flows to and from the various governmental departments already functioning police firemen Personnel of federal agencies industry Public Utilities Public Works Community shelters anyone or any situation can be a source of information all persons involved must be trained to anticipate the need for and recognize the significance of information sometimes confusion arises in determining the difference between raw information and fact this needn't be if raw information is questioned investigated and validated raw information may not necessarily be factual the difference is a matter of proof and verification information from a reliable authoritative Source can usually be trusted in this case it is a matter of reliability trained people are needed not only to report occurrences but to anticipate what might happen based on information they already have [Music] for example an astute police officer observing a group of youths on the street late at night with nothing to do and no place to go senses what might develop into a situation [Music] he handles the situation in the right way and at the opportune time [Music] in doing so he uses his training and experience to anticipate and prevent possible trouble this illustrates the value of recognizing the significance of a situation [Music] no in collecting information everyone should understand and use the familiar 5ws essential and establishing facts for example the people have received a 10 Rankin dose of radiation by 7 pm in the Jefferson Park shelter because it Fallout from an upwind nuclear explosion the second step processing simply means transforming information into usable facts incoming information is examined sorted and placed into the proper category for example data related to a particular area in a radiological situation is sole labeled every piece of information is examined to determine its pertinence for example is it needed immediately if so by whom is it of future value if so to whom is it a value to this government or to other governments processing of information requires this examination to determine the reliability of its source is the source completely reliable Fairly reliable or unreliable or cannot be judged information must also be examined for its probability is it confirmed is it probably true is it improbable or can it be judged these and other questions must be answered for example if the information comes from a specialist in the field of law enforcement medicine fire agriculture is it likely there is a basis of fact personal knowledge of the source of information helps determine its reliability is what is vital to one Department of government equally vital to another personal knowledge of the significance of the information helps to determine its use is the information reported realistic feasible and consistent with what is already known personal knowledge of existing facts help determine its probability arriving at a decision is a deliberate and systematic process yet there's only one best way to function be thorough do the pieces of information fit together logically so that the total picture comes into sharp Focus the Gathering of all information that is pertinent to a particular situation all the bits and pieces Under One Roof constitutes the basis for a factual estimate of the situation if some needed facts are missing what then questions relating to the evaluation of the situation are called essential elements of information or e e i these questions must result in necessary answers for example asking what are the limits of radiological contamination though important will not provide the answers the leader needs to make a decision it is not the essential element of information a better question would be where how and with what effect will radiological contamination impede or deny operations another question what roads are blocked is of some value but again does not give the answers required to make a decision the decision maker is interested in those roads which are important to his operation a better question is where how and with what effect will blocking of streets and highways impede operations when the decision maker has the answers to the Essential Elements of information he has a basis upon which to make judgment when the intervention has been converted into facts it must be made available to appropriate users otherwise it is useless to provide these facts to those who need them you need Communications messenger telephone radio Twix [Music] thank you for example in addition to the warning given by Sirens or other means information under emergency conditions can be communicated to the public over the emergency broadcast system people can be warned of the potential radioactive fallout Hazard and receive information about shelter locations and the actions they should take to increase their chances for survival continued for an indefinite period this station will remain on the air to Broadcast News not only the public but agency officials responsible for dealing with emergency conditions need factual information vote for field operations and headquarters decisions and direction thus Communications are vital to the dissemination of facts to those who need them and must use them the steps represented by this complete cycle provide the means to get the raw information establish the facts and get them to the point where they can be used the ability to develop useful facts from broad data is essential in this process [Music] of your decision survival actions taken by your community will depend on your knowledge your alertness your judgment and successful decisions are based on facts the payoff is in terms of Life your life and mind facts do make the difference thank you so that was at the end the film got more warped so it basically was shrinking and it was not making contact with the sprockets make sure I have no food on me thank you Rick uh so that's why it was beginning to roll at the end we have a newer scanner that we could probably scan that without that issue that's the old tell us any that we had um but yeah at the beginning I don't know if you recognize it there's the woman that comes out and she's like oh like this and then she does like points to the sky that's that's in the Devo beautiful world video uh one of those things as a child that impacted me when I first saw it and made me start thinking about stock footage in a weird way and I got to actually tell uh the person who actually worked on this film uh Chuck uh chunk I can't remember his name Chuck is that right Chuck um Chuck Stadler yes there we go the email is my Collective brain so Chuck Stadler did that I met him in Minneapolis and I got to tell him how much he affected me he sent me a bunch of stuff that he had done some Devo uh music video films and I was able to transfer him for him and it was really phenomenal uh all right so oh thank you Mitch for donating he actually went to patreon and he bought us coffee so thank you so much for that uh doing that will allow us to buy things like uh Sharpies with their names on them uh and also to buy coffee and ant traps because of we have a lot of ants here at the archive it's kind of related to the Shadow day Dinah show that we're doing at the found footage Festival a YouTube channel where we watch films or we watch TV shows from the 70s a live action Saturday morning fair and we always drink like a sugary drink and uh I think it's been attracting ants so uh anyways we're dealing with that uh okay this next film I'm probably have shown this but I couldn't find any record that I've shown it so we're gonna watch it because um it's a great film and uh made by uh caterpillar our friends at caterpillar this predates shake hands with danger but uh has the word danger in the title and it's about forklifts forklift trucks who I mean as as soon as those things were introduced I think they were killing and injuring and maiming people left and right they were so useful but then so utterly dangerous uh so this is a film one of a couple I have about the dangers of forklifts so here's the color of danger if you've seen it before don't give away the ending enjoy [Music] forklift trucks machines designed and built to move material efficiently and dependably you can color them safe equipment like this is safe the only thing that can make it otherwise is the way it's used how it's handled by the guy at the controls and you can say this for most forklift operators there are professionals they're proud of their skill on these machines proud of their ability to get the job done right they have good safety records most of them only now and then will you find the exception the one who takes chances the guy who's too busy to read his manual to learn the rules the guy who fails to follow instructions or takes a chance on a job or off he's the guy who forgets the color of danger red like blood the color that says wanted color that warns of trouble ahead [Music] and whenever that warning is ignored disaster can strike [Applause] [Music] it can strike on the street or on the job foreign ERS heed the warning signs they look for the color of danger but they realize also that not all hazards can be marked or lighted signs can't be everywhere that danger might appear under certain conditions and so they've learned to think ahead to sense trouble before it develops in a way they see the color of danger even when it isn't there [Music] [Applause] [Music] for example ahead of this operator are a number of places that good sense would color red for danger places where the worst might happen if the operator were not alert [Music] [Applause] [Music] let's say it again a truck like this will do its job safely provided it's properly used but mesuse can reduce its built-in margin of safety in many ways load a truck Beyond its rated capacity and the steering is affected this may mean nothing more than a poorly negotiated turn and some expensive casting stroke nobody hurt not this time but faulty steering has been known to kill people but even with no load and perfect steering the careless operator can get himself in trouble fella fails to lower his mast forgets you has to pass under an overhead obstruction in the form of a temporary seam line [Music] here's thoughtlessness adds up to the color of danger [Music] professionals follow the basic rule always lower the Mast when traveling from one point to another with or without a load keep the forks low if visibility is a problem travel in reverse and keep in mind this principle raising a load also raises a truck center of gravity when this happens it's time to take it easy a clumsy hand on the lift or tilt lever can start a chain reaction that leads to trouble thank you there is nothing like a little jolt to drive a lesson home some unmarked hazards are so obvious that anyone should spot them where would you put the color of danger in this season first of all that load is loose on the pallet and those railroad tracks will produce quite a bump at the speed he's going [Music] the best advice about Crossing Tracks is reduce speed and always cross them at an angle instead of head on [Music] it's always condition red on a loading dock loose dock plates Wheels not blocked slippery decks any of these can cause trouble an operator who doesn't see the color of danger before he drives into a trailer isn't likely to see it after hold it it's not a good idea to depend on others to see danger for you so always check the dock plate and make sure the wheels are chopped before you begin working a truck [Music] take things for granted are especially apt to miss the color of danger when it flashes this machine is in the shop to have the brakes repaired but the mechanic Harry Schwartz gets called away before he can complete the job and he forgets to put a warning tag on the machine the operator Bob Broward is there at 9 20. Harry promised him his truck would be ready by nine so it must be ready so why wait to see Harry or why for that matter take time to inspect the machine [Music] foreign here's why [Music] he starts down an incline with no breaks there's a sharp turn at the bottom it's condition red all the way [Music] it hurt no maybe we'll take you over here and let you sit down for a minute no make a way to stop a truck a 12 000 pound truck crash lands pretty hard that's why an operational check is important especially when it's been in the shop for repairs there has been in the shop or it's just the start of the shift the experienced operator makes sure his machine is ready to go he checks the hydraulic oil [Music] clutch and the water [Music] he checks the engine oil [Music] looks at the tires [Music] and his instruments and he tests his brakes he reports a Fally operation immediately he doesn't take a chance yes a professional takes pride in his machine and in the way he does his job he not only knows his machine and its capabilities but he makes sure he knows the material he has to handle a real Pro would never fail to take into account Loosely secured containers and he'd use special care when working at this height questions several thousand cans is an awful mess to clean up these machines will move tremendous amounts of material but there's one thing they're not designed to do they're not meant to carry passengers if you want to really see the color of danger just offer some of your buddies a ride on your truck well remember your kindness for a long time here's another way to be remembered and not fondly Park your truck and leave the force Rays after all how can anyone get hurt by a machine that's standing still [Music] this is a great way to cool a beautiful friendship of course there are times when it's a good idea to cool it emotional upsets can turn careful people into real Daredevils take the case of Joe Dexter a forklift operator on his way to work [Music] just knocked out my stoplight well you better just clear out of here there's a stop sign right there if you see you stop ten feet before that coordinate your foot with your rise evidently I don't know what's the matter pressure luck partner yeah thanks Joe is still burned up when he gets to the plant see it kind of late this morning [Music] he's too angry to use his head now normally Joe wouldn't think of traveling with his Forks raised he knows the extra weight of mass carriage and forks on his truck combined with too much speed can spell trouble but he's sore and in this state of mind he can't see the color of danger so cool it before you start to drive another way to cool it but not particularly recommended you're working inside a warehouse on a dry surface there's plenty of traction for turning and braking but suppose you forget for a moment the possibility that the dock outside may be wet and slippery on the way out you pick up too much speed so when you hit the brakes [Applause] where attraction may be a problem reduce your speed or make sure you can swim of course where'd it go let's just end with that um what happened oh excuse me it totally took me by surprise what happened that's weird um it ended yeah thanks Sean um wow all right uh that's weird but here we go I can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything okay [Music] hey get down from there now [Music] what if it bumps that control by accident you'd be mince meat by now what have I told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well I told him not to touch anything all right I guess I wasn't thinking y'all weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety hair shake hands with Danger shake hands [Music] I used to laugh at safety now they call me three fingers [Music] I was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my toolbox and I'll take myself a look I climbed up on a Dozier with my mechanic's Pride I said if you can keep it running friend while I poke around inside I used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger Joe [Music] till another morning I was grinding on some steel on the other hand got chaos fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels and metal are what's amazing I've seen mechanics burning and I've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute I've seen them lose it all caught in trouble seeing them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spent a lifetime with the Blues [Music] [Applause] [Music] Danger [Music] [Music] hands would change [Music] [Music] like you can't just dangerous [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends I Used to Know compared to them I'm lucky to be just three finger Joe [Music] oh my God oh right so that's the second time that we've had a film just end where we don't know what's going to happen next and I have to go uh or maybe I'll have my intern go and pull the films and we'll see if we can get a better scan of them and see if there's actually an ending to them because that's very important that we know what happened to those crocheted puppets who were uh trapped in a um Puppet Theater that was on fire and then of course we want to know what happened um at the color of danger like what what's
