e is is in for is all right yeah some assembly line footage uh and I don't know the name of the company uh tried to see if I could see a label uh or something uh so I don't know um but yeah this was some 16 mm film uh that was scanned by uh the prelinger archive and um we have been helping them get stuff online and working with the collection as well and so that was pretty awesome um anyways I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show and we got some films set up I I built up a reel of one two three films uh and so hopefully um yeah hopefully it'll run okay uh first film is it's let George do it so let George do it enjoy hello Mary hi Ron welcome back thank you thank you I might have known you would pick today to get back to work how come the weather it suddenly turned cool balmy and beautiful been a little hot here terrible and sticky come on go ahead make me miserable how was aapco Sunshine great surf wonderful food and cool nightes you know I didn't even get sick and how do you like my tan looks t terrible aaok isn't that where those kids dive off the cliff into the sea yeah and that's one thing I didn't like why not well you know how dangerous that is once a safety director always a safety director you're right but you know seriously every time I saw those divers I thought about you and this place and the people in the plant so tell me what's been going on here well let's see inspection schedule was kept supervisors turned in reports of safety contacts okay oh purchasing wants to see you before they sign the contract on that new drying oven okay I'll call them today and about the usual number of uh first a cases nothing big that's all most of it can wait but there were three accidents I wanted to talk to you about not serious ones just different they all seem to have something in common do you think we might have a little epidemic starting well at least if there's a pattern in them maybe we can stop it by training people to recognize the symptoms okay I might as well get right back into harness tell me about it now this first one involved two electricians you know uh Al Santino sure well he and his partner dick mccan were were running a new cond it down aisle J I got to the corner of al5 dick was supposed to place the war warning cones and stand guard while Al locked the wheels on the rolling scaffold and climbed up what happened was that while Joe was locking the wheels dick went to get the cones and somebody in the machine shop called to dick and he walked over to talk to the guy meanwhile Al got the wheels locked and had just gotten started up the ladder when a forklift came down the intersecting aisle now that's aisle five the driver couldn't see the scaffolding at the corner he made a tight turn and saw the scaffolding and tried to Swerve out but he struck of it and poor old Al took a fall that he did he was just lucky he hadn't climbed higher well it was a blind corner for the truck driver and there weren't any cones out to warn it Maan felt really terrible about that he said that in another minute he would have had the cones in place sure and Al figured everything was okay all he had to do was climb up there and do his job he didn't wait to make sure that the Cones were in place no he didn't check now that was the first case now here's another one this one was caused by a defective drill first the drill had a short in it and second someone had removed the ground prong from an extension cord he got in The Tool Room well that just about tells the story then doesn't it except for the details you can guess what happened anyway two maintenance men Ken camp and boy Grady were working on a job Ken went around to the tool room and picked up a drill and an extension cord when he got back to the work area he hooked it all up and handed it to Grady how seriously was he hurt he got a hell of a jolt luckily he wasn't Frozen so he let go of the trigger and he didn't fall off the ladder well it was sure lousy equipment maintenance somebody in the tool room should have checked out that drill of course and Camp should never have accepted a board that was missing the ground prong why did he oh he said he just didn't look at the plug said that he figured that whatever would come out of The Tool Room would be okay his supervisor didn't think much of that excuse really chewed him out oh sure he was wrong and whoever should have done the checking in the tool room was wrong but you know the one who really interests me in that case is Foy Grady why he was sort of mous Trapped wasn't he how but he shouldn't have been I'm beginning to think that what we've got here are two examples of the let George do it syndrome what the let George do it syndrome I'll explain it to you later but first you said there was a third accident didn't you yes here we are the injured man was Carl Schulz the drill press operator the setup man had completed his setup and Schulz had started work and he finished two out of the four drilling operations everything was all right and then he started on the third drill the backup bar wasn't tight Schulz place the fixer he was working with against the bar and started the drill Under Pressure the bar gave and the fixture began to spin Schulz caught a corner that really sliced up his finger good so the setup man didn't tighten the bar enough and Schultz didn't check right he just assumed that of course I see what you mean let George do what you said but we all have to let George do it don't we I I mean nobody can do all the jobs himself oh sure we have to divide up the work this is a very specialized world but still it's easy to get used to having George do it that's the other side of specialization it's easy after a while to assume that George has done it even when your physical safety and sometimes your life are at stake look Ron you know me I've been sitting here thinking so what do we do about it I mean suppose we use these cases in the next training program what do we say about them what do we do about George good question I think first we talked to Schultz and Grady and Al Santino but they've probably already learned their lesson but we've got to worry about are all the people who could get hurt if they do the same thing and take George too much for granted we've got to get across to them protect yourselves check the wheel Chucks on the truck check the lockout on the machine check behind the vehicle before you back up don't count on someone else be responsible for your own safety don't take anything for granted sure we can do that but what about George do we talk to him too you bet we do oh I know you don't have to talk to George after he's goofed and somebody got hurt or at least you don't have to talk much I'll bet dick mccan did feel lousy when I got hurt because he hadn't put out those safety cones no the trick is to talk to George before he Goofs how do we do that nobody ever messes up on purpose well that's exactly right the point is that George is everywhere he could be anybody like all of us he does his job right most of the time but occasionally he slips up and there's trouble I remember something that happened to me 10 years ago when I was a department supervisor there were acid tanks in my section so of course we had emergency showers well one of the valves on a shower began to leak and I reported it they sent a maintenance man over to fix it he turned off the water hung up a sign saying out of order and then he went to work when he finished the job he took down the sign came over to me and said the shower was fixed I thanked him and signed his work order naturally it was my business to check the shower I knew that and I was thinking about it but just then somebody came up and said I was needed right away so I went off and did whatever it was I was wanted for the the shower was still turned off but when I got back I didn't remember to check I suppose I assumed that everything was all right so what happened well it was one of those times when you don't get away with making a mistake a few days later one of the men was splashed with acid and ran over to the shower nothing happened no water wow I get your point so you assumed that the maintenance man had done his job and old George hadn't done it oh it was worse than that to that poor fellow who got burned and stepped under a dry shower I was the one who hadn't done my job I was George Mary your three accidents are all related and the pattern is likely to show up again it cuts two ways when you're responsible for the safety of others and we all are sometimes don't be George the sort of George who didn't do it and where it's a matter of your personal safety don't rely on George always check I hope we can get those two ideas across but it won't be easy oh I know but we got to try there are easier ways to learn than by getting hurt or by hurting others [Music] I think it would have been better with a song I don't know um this next film oh crap I can't remember I don't have the can with me uh I think it's uh something about kids uh accepting no or dos it's a weird title so um let's see what it is enjoy for When We Were Young we were expected to learn and to observe many rules for living some of these rules such as walking around puddles were intended for our protection and well-being at every step we had to comply whatever we wanted to do had to be done in the way our parents thought proper we had to learn to be polite shaking hands with grown-ups seemed senseless but since it was considered important by parents we had to conform at least outwardly first furthermore we were expected to comply with conventional ways of doing things to eat with Clean Hands and to observe table manners we didn't like all those rules and we often rebelled against the dues with such feelings we gradually learn to conform to parental requirements the way we accept the does along with these feelings helped shape our emerging personality some of the earliest dues are concerned with personal living the little child intent upon his own Affairs continually faces the necessity of learning those living habits which his parents require for example this little boy wants to go on playing with blocks but mother insists he must first pull up his pants now that he has complied he can go on playing with his toys soon he is tired of these blocks he notices his crayons and now he wants to draw some pictures but he has forgotten one of the Dos so mother reminds him that he must first put his blocks away the boy obeys because he is eager to draw pictures an understanding mother is concerned with more than obedience to her Authority she realizes that it is important to help the child accept the dues and learn to perform them by himself this develops self-discipline he would like to go on drawing however mother tells that it is time to go to bed this is another of the dues designed to help him form orderly living habits with his pajamas on he is ready for bed but he will do anything to postpone going to sleep here he tries taking a book to bed a child's day is filled with dues they are tiring for both mother and child but many are necessary for his guidance and well-being unconditional love helps the child to accept these dues without serious conflicts day by day he incorporates these dues into his developing personality early in life boys and girls meet the masculine and feminine dues they are expected to dress each in a different way they are expected to fix their hair in different ways and in other ways follow different paths each is required to accept these masculine or feminine patterns as interpreted by their parents little girls usually enjoy playing with dolls they like doing feminine things anticipating their future roles as mothers occasionally girls find that they are not supposed to do some of the things boys do children look upon their parents as models of feminine and masculine roles most boys like masculine activities but naturally some take to them more easily than others the dues for the boy and for the girl are changing today just as the roles of father and mother are being Modified by social changes how boys and girls in their early years accept these masculine and feminine patterns and how they feel about their future roles further shape their personalities every child is expected to accept the dues for human relations to be sociable whatever his personal feelings for example children must learn to settle differences in Friendly manner these two want to ride the tricycle but haven't learned the does of sharing now they're going to take turns some children find it easy to accept these patterns other children find it more difficult while a few children never fully accept them living together also means learning to do what others want the child who wants to be treated generously even fairly gradually realizes that he must treat others fairly through this continual give and take in play children are practicing the many does for social living thereby they learn to cooperate gradually they also learn to do their share with others on group activities each child is trying hard to win acceptance as a member of the group learning to do his part and to recognize the contribution of others through playing and similar experiences the child begins to understand what it means to be a member of a social group these children have already learned many dues for living together these dues will increasingly shape their pattern of human relations as each child accepts these dues in his individual way so his personality develops and now let's summarize to live in our social World children must learn the many formal conventions and recognized patterns of social conduct through play and make believe children reveal their own version of the dos and what these DOS mean to them each child also develops an individual way of Performing these dues the strong desire of children to be like grown-ups helps them to accept these conventional practice practices even though they may not fully understand them in all these dues they are governed largely by their feelings toward the grown-ups who have imposed them and thus in accepting the dues children develop the characteristic patterns of social living that shape their individual personalities [Music] all right well so some of that's outdated but it's it's fascinating to see and James Brill man James Brill the voice of uh Erie in toes set your back and watch the [Music] show hello welcome to kids Corner Kids Corner is a show all about this hospital and some of the things that might happen to you while you're here my name is Donna and I'm one of the people that you'll meet on Kids Corner today the hospital is a very large and busy place but it's a very good place too sometimes while you're here you may feel afraid those feelings are really natural it would help the doctors the nurses and your parents if you would talk about things that frighten you sometimes if you sit together and talk about the things that scare you you feel better Jasper came to the hospital a few days ago to have an operation he came with his friend Linda and it went like this [Music] stop wait what is it Jasper Linda I've changed my mind I don't want to have my tonsils taken out but Jasper you've had so many sore throats the doctor feels you need this operation I don't want to I'm really afraid can you tell me about it well I'm scared because this place is so big and there are so many people I'm afraid that things might happen to me here Jasper I understand that you're afraid and that's nothing to be ashamed of the hospital is very big and it is busy good then I'll get my suitcase and my teddy bear and let's go home Jasper I said I understand why you're afraid but I also know that the doctor and nurses are expecting you today if we go now Linda they'll never miss us oh yes they will Jasper the nurses are waiting upstairs on a special floor just for children have they ever taken anybody's tonsils out before Oh Jasper many times do they take care of many monsters well maybe not monsters but they know all about children well what would happen to me now if I should decide to stay well when I had my tonsils out it was sort of like this you go upstairs and the nurse will probably ask you lots of questions while she weighs and measures you she'll listen to your heart and then she'll write all of this information down in your chart I see maybe I'll stay then okay I'll let you push the buttons on the elevator will I get to ride in a wheelchair sometime sure you will Jasper okay then let's go on up to my room let's go this is a nice room what's this well Jasper this is a hospital gown a gown no way my legs show Jasper this is nice it has cowboys and horses on it cowboys and horses did you wear one of these of course I did let me help you on with this the hospital wants you to wear this because it's very clean and it's comfortable well I guess so oh but Linda this crib has got to go I'm not a baby oh Jasper this isn't a crib this is a hospital bed even adults have railings on the sides of their beds you been adult yes that's so you won't fall out at night and hurt yourself yeah you wouldn't want to hurt yourself in a hospital I guess aha very funny Jasper I'll turn the bed down and then you can hop in there hi Jasper hi Linda hi hi Nancy I brought the bracelet you're going to be wearing while you're here in the hospital first a gown and then a bracelet that's right this one has your name on it everybody wears these here in the hos hospital so the doctors and nurses will know who you are oh look it does have my name on it it says Jasper here your call buttons up here see the button it's right here now if you need a nurse you can just push this and one of them will come oh good I'll have people coming and going from my room all the time I'll just beep the old button Jasper wait a minute this is serious there are lots of other children for us to take care of on the floor here so you can't be playing with the buttons If you really need one of us you can go ahead and push it do you understand I understand good I need to take your temperature now would you hold this under your tongue why well this is another way for us to tell whether you're sick or not if you have a fever then the doctor may not want to operate right away okay good okay I need to take your blood pressure too you're going to press my blood yes wait a minute well this doesn't hurt a bit Jasper just wrap this around your arm it kind of gives you a little hug looks scary well it really doesn't hurt at all this is a way for us to tell how hard your heart is working there take a look at your temperature here Jasper how is my heart your heart's just fine and so is your temperature I'm going to write a few things down in your chart right now hello are you Jasper who are you she's the lab technician she needs a blood sample for me wait a minute my blood is on the inside of me I'm going to have to pick your finger to get a few drops of blood from my slide will it hurt a little bit but you can say ouch why do you need my blood anyway hold up your finger well they need it down in the lab so they can look at it under a microscope ouch that did hurt a little bit thank you Jasper for holding still that helped a lot okay Jasper I have one more thing before we go I need to get a urine sample from you I don't have any well I need you to urinate into this little cup oh into that little cup mhm the bathroom's right over there and I'll wait for you here until you're finished oh and I bet that cup goes down to the laboratory too that's right you're getting to be a smart little monster here let me help help you out children I want you to listen very carefully here's an important message for you hey what are we doing out of the bottle this is dangerous a little kid might come among and think we were candy that would be awful because we're medicine he might even eat us no this is serious I serious we could make you Delirious delious you should have a healthy fear of us of us too much of us is dangerous W we're not candy believe us even though we look so fine and dandy when you're sick we come in handy but we're not [Music] doctors tell the pharmacy phy types of pills that you will need you will need and he knows the harm that we can be we can be if we're not taken [Music] carefully we're not candy believe us even though we look so fine and D when you're sick we come in handy but we're not [Music] candy let's get back in the bottle yeah come on let's go that's where we [Music] belong that's better [Music] we'll take the elevator down to X-ray and I'll be right back okay we'll stay right here won't we Jasper Linda what Jasper have you ever had an x-ray before sure I have many times what will they do to me there well you go into the X-ray room and it's a room filled with large Machinery that can take pictures of the inside of your body will it hurt me no it won't hurt you Jasper a technician will ask you to sit on the end of a table and then she'll take a picture of the inside of your chair can they see my inside smiling no Jasper they can't see your inside smiling oh how does that machine work anyway well the X-ray is an invisible wave that passes through your body and it shows up as a shadow on a special film can I have the picture when they finish no you can't Jasper the picture's for the radiologist a radio who not a radio radiologist he's a doctor specially trained to look at X-rays and see if there's something wrong with the inside of your body well that sounds easy enough and you did say that it won't hurt didn't you it won't hurt Jasper okay did you know that a long time ago people thought you became sick because you had done something wrong or bad today we know that isn't true our bodies become ill because of germs and sometimes even when you take care of your body it can get sick did you know that the things that happen to you when you're sick like throwing up or having to go to the bathroom or feeling warm all over are actually good for you funny isn't it that those UNC comfortable things are actually good we don't believe as people did a long time ago we know that even nice people like you can get sick sometimes Jasper's back in his room now let's go join him Jasper you've had your test and your X-ray I think that's all for now Linda what Jasper you're not leaving now are you well not if you need me for something I'm hungry let's go down to the snack bar and get something to eat Jasper your will be brought to you on a trade oh then I'll have a hamburger and french fries and four ice cream cones wait a minute little friend you do get to pick your food but you have to pick something from the hospital menu everyone here wants to see you eat the right food so that you'll grow strong and healthy and be able to leave soon Linda what Jasper I don't want you to go yet I know you don't Jasper but I can't stay here tonight I have to go home the nurses will be here all night and they'll be able to take care of anything that you you need will you come back to visit me of course I will I'll be here in the morning will you read me a story before you leave sure I even brought your favorite books oh [Music] good it's the morning of the day of Jasper's operation his friend Linda is with him let's join him good morning Jasper hi Linda I'm glad you're here I'm hungry and thirsty and would you get me a glass of orange juice for breakfast Jasper you can't have anything to eat or drink this morning do you see this sign says nothing by mouth those are your doctor's orders on the morning of your operation Nothing by mouth what does that mean nothing by mouth means that you can't eat or drink anything because it might upset your stomach before or after the operation yeah I sure don't want to get sick I already have this funny feeling in my stomach what kind of a funny feeling Jasper well it's a feeling I get in my stomach when I'm a little bit nervous or afraid are you afraid uh-huh it's natural to be afraid Jasper I was afraid when I had my operation Linda what Jasper will you come with me into the operating room no Jasper I can't come into the operating room with you the operating room is only for doctors or nurses what are they going to do to me in there well the doctors and nurses will try to fix what's bothering you in your case Jasper you're tonsil probably you'll be put on a stretcher that's a moving table with wheels and roll down to the operating room then a nurse will help you onto the operating table and you'll probably notice a doctor there he's called an anesthesiologist and this is who an anesthesiologist he's a special doctor Jasper and he'll ask you to breathe into a mask which you'll place over your nose and your mouth a mask will I be wearing a mask not for the whole operation Jasper this is just the way the doctor puts you into a deep type of sleep oh I'm glad you told me about the mask I might have been afraid oh and I hope I don't snore that would be embarrassing this isn't the same type of sleep you do at night Jasper this is a much deeper type of sleep so that you won't feel anything during your operation and you won't wake up until it's all over I'm afraid it is scary I felt afraid too you did but you're a grownup even grown-ups feel afraid sometimes wow good morning Jasper good morning is it time to go downstairs not just yet the orderly will be up in a few minutes with the stretcher oh don't bother about that old stretcher I can walk you're going to feel too sleepy to walk down to surgery I'm not sleepy I just woke up well I'm going to give you a shot that'll make you feel very relaxed and sleepy so I want you to hold real still a shot mhm I'll sting for just a few second seconds ow ooh there that did hurt a little bit now I'm going to put a bandaid on it oh good there you go that feels better I need to put the railing up so you don't fall out and hurt yourself there you are see you later Jasper goodbye Linda Linda you're not going away now are you no Jasper I'm right here and I'll be waiting here when you come back from your operation oh why don't you just come downstairs with me and you can wait right outside the operating room and that way you can see me first thing when I wake up you wake up in a recovery room that's a special room in the hospital just for people waking up from their operations and they'll be a nurse there with you why don't you try to close your eyes and get some rest now Jasper [Music] okay did you hear Jasper say ouch when he got that shot that's because it hurt it would help the doctor or nurse if you would relax your arm hold still and say ouch when the shot's over it may be necessary while you're in the hospital to have a shot but nobody really likes them let's look in at another patient Jennifer's been in the hospital for a number of days now Jennifer's just sick of being sick well I'm getting tired of this old bed and I'd like to leave here quick oh I hate these crazy stomach pains oh man I'm sick of being sick did you hear me I'm sick of being sick think I'll lay back and I'll rest my head because res in is the trick I'll take the syrup and I'll take those pills because I'm sick of being sick and they will cure me I'm so sick of being sick but it won't be long now and I won't be sick not [Music] [Laughter] anymore Jasper's surgery is over and he's in the recovery room now where's Linda my throat hurts Jasper Jasper you're in the recovery room you just had your tonsils out where's Linda you're just waking up from the operation honey you'll see Linda real soon just try not to talk I want Linda just try not to talk throat won't hurt so much honey I'm still kind of sleepy you're just waking up from the operation Now Jasper you'll be awake enough pretty soon to go back to your room and you'll be able to see Linda then okay it's okay how are you feeling I'm feeling better but my throat still hurts I'm sure your throat hurts but the doctor said you're doing just fine and you'll be able to go home I will oh that's great I can't wait to go home and play in the swing and run in my yard wait a minute you're going to have to take it easy for a few days so that your body can recuperate then the sore throat you have will be gone and you'll be feeling fine you know what Linda what Jasper I'm going to tell all the kids in my neighborhood about the things I've seen and done in the hospital they'll want to know everything that happened hi nurse Nancy well Jasper are you ready to leave the hospital that's right I'm all packed and I've got my suitcase and my teddy bear and Linda's downstairs thank you for everything well thank you for being such a good patient if I ever get sick again I'm coming back to this Hospital good well take care of yourself and stay healthy okay I will let's go when you're not yourself my friend and you're not so well when you're feeling sick my friend you come to the hospital the people here are all your friends to help when you're afraid you can be our helper too by doing what we say kids Corners just for you kids products at low prices to the consumer candy is one example of this system not a necessity of life it is a quick energy food that adds to the fun and enjoy enjoyment of life it's a product that appeals to all ages and to people from all walks of life to find out about the nutritional value of candy let's hear from a man who is a foremost authority on nutrition I'm Dr Frederick J stair founder and first chairman of Harvard's Department of nutrition and professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health fundamentally we eat for two main reasons one for physiological purposes that is to nourish and maintain our bodies and second for a great variety of emotional and psychological problems because eating has always been one of the pleasures of life in fact most of us eat because we enjoy the taste of foods and if we let our tastes go such that we eat a variety of foods the chances are we will be quite well nourished now one of the things that gives food enjoyment is a sweet taste and candy and sugar certainly have a sweet taste actually we are born with a sweet taste in fact there are studies to show that the fetus in its mother's womb enjoys a sweet taste candy is thought of frequently as one of the causes of dental decay and it is true that sugar and other carbohydrates favor the development of tooth Decay but principally when consumed in between meals on the other hand this is a far too simplistic comment about the causes of tooth decay which is a rather complicated disease and which really is an infectious disease furthermore there is a rather simple solution to the prevention of perhaps 60 to 70% of tooth decay and that involves adjustment of the fluoride content of the water a process usually called fluoridation candy as with most other foods can be a part of total good nutrition so eat it in moderation and include it as a part of your total [Music] Nutrition sprinkle it with you sprinkle it with you cover it in chocolate delicious talk about your childhood [Music] tomorrow in [Music] a 3500 years ago during the reign of the Egyptian pharaohs people ate candy made of honey in dates candy was also eaten in India and China and as far west as Italy when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 ad it destroyed the town of Pompei centuries later it was excavated and an ancient candy shop was found preserved by the ash even thousands of years ago the quality of candy depended on what it was made from and that is just as true today making good candy starts with good ingredients many are produced in this country sugar from beets and sugar cane corn syrup from corn peanuts almonds cashews and dairy products other raw materials come from overseas SE and arrive by ship along Philadelphia's waterways there they are unloaded and transported to the Richardson storage facilities until needed to make mins candy for snacks for quick energy for special occasions for fun each of the five companies has special products and processes but they also have much in common especially the care that goes into making good candy to please and satisfy the customer here the high cooked sugar formula is chilled on water cool tables [Music] later it's moved to a giant pulling machine that arates the [Music] ingredients candy mints are especially at Richardson here they are formed by being fed through special rollers these after dinner mints with ingredients of sugar cream of tartar corn syrup dextrose and natural mint flavors are now being tumbled to shape them into [Music] patties the different flavors are then mixed and ready for [Music] packaging this packaging machine automatically measures the right amount of candy seals it into double walled cellophane and then cuts the bags [Music] apart this machine fills 5 lb cartons with plain mints or mints with assorted jelly centers for shipment to Food Service sales such as restaurants and institutions at Richardson as at the other four companies care goes into every step of making candy from the selection of ingredients to final wrapping and this care is evident in the final product west across Pennsylvania from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh is the Clark company here Clark and Zagnut bars peanut Crunch and Taffy are made at Clark raw peanuts are roasted and made into peanut butter that is later mixed into the candy with taffy this forms the center of the bar in the old process of mixing candy centers which is still being used for special runs weighed hot Taffy is dumped onto a table where it's flattened the peanut butter is added to it then wrapped in a jacket of Taffy and stretched and mixed by hand in the new system the peanut butter is added mechanically and a large machine flattens and mixes the can Cy into a large roll this mixture is spun into a long rope that is cut to the right size for individual [Music] bars the bars are then moved by conveyor for final coating the bars will be covered with this confectioner's coating made from cocoa beans the the use of sophisticated up-to-date equipment helps keep the candy quality up and the price [Music] down as at all five companies the process of combining the ingredients is carefully controlled according to special formulas Grandma may have had secret candy recipes too but she never dreamed of operating on this scale here crispy coconut is being sprinkled onto the finished Zagnut [Music] bars a million bars can be made daily each just like its neighbor in taste and weight [Music] here the Blackjack Taffy is cut and wrapped by special high-speed [Music] machines as they're fed through this large machine for final packaging they're checked and inspected for proper wrapping [Music] a large modern cafeteria is also a feature of the Clark company providing a comfortable place to relax during break and lunch periods further west in Chicago the Holloway company is making its famous Slowpoke suckers and MK Duds here too ingenious time-saving machinery ensur speed and quality warm caramel like a chocolate river is being run through special rollers to form the center for Milk Duds caramel centers are sprayed with a candy coating to give them added flavor and protect them for freshness [Music] the number of mil Duds in each each box is always the same another machine rejects anything under the legal weight this is part of the complete system of quality control practiced by all the beatric [Music] companies the high standards for the candy are maintained by a number of tests state federal and independent in inspectors periodically examine the raw ingredients they also check the candy as it's being made and the finished product to make sure it meets government standards the companies themselves run daily tests on the candy and also send samples to the central beatric lab for analysis at Holloway's lab as well as the other company's Labs chemical tests visual tests and machine tests are made to check for Taste weight appearance and to make sure there are no impurities the goal is to produce a clean nutritious product the sanitary conditions at the companies are carefully maintained the employees the equipment and the plant itself are kept hygienically clean and regulated all these controls assure full and fair value to the customer long a hallway favorite the black cow sucker is formed on this machine paper sucker sticks are being automatically fed and pressed into the Carl to form the sucker upon leaving the machine it is wrapped and ready for the candy counter along the shores of the rolling mississipp Missippi River we come to the Gateway to the West at St Louis Missouri the Switzer candy company makes licorice its storage facilities for the mixing ingredients is one of the most modern and upto-date of any candy company Switzer is a progressive competitive company that uses the latest technology to help perfect its product this electronic board was designed by Switzer to direct the movement of the ingredients to the mixing tanks and to make sure they're combined at the proper temperature and consistency [Music] the hot licorice emerges from special forming tubes to be cut and [Music] cooled after cooling the cherry red and black bite pieces are separated and conveyed to special packaging machines [Music] these amazing machines wrap and package the licorice packaging receives as much attention and care as the steps that went before no corners are cut to make sure the buyer gets candy as fresh and full of flavor as when it was made this packaging is designed to keep the freshness of the candy inside the wrapper and also protect it from outside elements that could harm it like moisture odors or too much light but packaging serves other purposes as well it identifies the product clearly and lists the ingredients and other important information required by law this outer package gives added protection to the C during shipping then acts as a display container where the candy is sold and finally these are boxed for shipment one last Safeguard against damage located on the outskirts of Denver in Wheat Ridge Colorado and nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains is the home of Jolly Rancher candies in one of the early steps of making hard candy the hot cooked syrup is fed into a mixing cone where flavor color and other ingredients are being automatically fed into a tube of candy it is then spun onto a moving stainless steel water cooled conveyor band as the ingredients cool it forms a thick sheet of colorful candy that is slowly beginning to harden buz the be in the peppermint trees by the S by the lemonade the candy is cut into small pieces and wrapped before it hardens and sent on to a packaging machine in the big rock Cy Mountain you never change your socks and the little string after these counter display boxes have been automatically filled they are overwrapped with film to keep the freshness [Music] in a lake of stew and ginger ale too you can paddle all around in a Big Canoe in the big to ensure cleanliness candy is automatically fed from the kitchen to this wrapping machine and into the wrapper without being touched by [Music] hand in the packaging of Fire Sticks boxes are moved on a bed of forced air in between these metal guide slides electric eye switches send the boxes to the correct [Music] don't fall and the wind blow in the big Rocky Mountain oh the the bees in the peint trees by the S water fountain by the lemonade Springs where the Wang do s in the big rock Cy [Music] Mountain after making the candy checking it for quality and packaging it it comes to this large Jolly Rancher Warehouse to await shipment to the buyer over 1 million PB of candy can be stored here where the humidity and temperature are controlled to keep the candy at Peak condition in the Jolly Rancher offices orders are received from around the country with the help of computers the sales and distribution of the candy is simplified candy from all five companies is distributed to supermarkets convenience stores independent operators and just plain candy stores all around our country providing the public with high quality lowcost food [Music] enjoyment attractive display bar boxes and wrappers are eye-catching and have a definite appeal to Candy lovers everywhere in Jolly Ranchers Fleet of 23 trucks the candy travels to all 50 States Canada Mexico and to more distant foreign [Music] markets all five companies are aware of the need to help conserve energy and F to and the drivers of these trucks receive special training to help
