Hi everybody. This is Skip Alzheimer. Welcome to the AV Geeks Lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and uh we also stack 16 millimeter films. Uh we are live from the film vault that we are slowly propagating. Joining me uh is of course >> Hi everybody. Oh, this is Skip Alzheimer. Welcome to something. All right. >> Um and also joining me is Ayanna. Hi. Say hi, Ayanna. >> Hi. >> This is a delay. So, >> hi Ayanna. >> Yeah. Um and so, uh let me mute this real quick. Uh I of course waited the last minute to set this up. So, um it there's going to be chaos today, but I did want to show people uh the archive as it stands. And what we're doing is Sid has been helping and Ayanna has been helping set up these racks. Uh, so we have two rows now of 13 shelves and then behind them is a bunch of red film cans that they're sorting and we are putting on the shelves by uh size and alphabetically because that system tends to work the best. And so, uh, it's been gross and hot. And so, I figured today we would take a little bit of a break and, uh, learn about safety. And the reason why is because, uh, I have three films that are part of the same series. It's the Safety Woman series. And, uh, they I've shown two of them before, but, the third one was one that we discovered while going through these collections. And I found this film. I was like, "Huh, this title sounds interesting." and I scanned it and I was like, "Oh my god, it's the missing third >> installment of the Safety Woman series." Um, so these guys have not seen any of the films. So, we're going to start off with films that we have seen. Uh, and there's a backstory with Safety Woman. And so, let's watch and learn. Enjoy. Where are the boys this afternoon? >> Kevin and Tommy are on the school basketball team. They went on the bus to play Marshfield School. They're probably home by now. >> Speaking of home, you're going to be a little late getting home today, aren't you? >> It's okay. I got permission from my mother to stay after school to help Mrs. Lopez set up the fire prevention display in the auditorium. >> Hey, that sounds interesting. I'm off duty now. You care to walk home with me? You can tell me all about the fire prevention display. Okay. >> Sure, Miss Kingsley. It's a neat display. Fire prevention is an important subject. Do you know more than 500 boys and girls about your age lost their lives in house fires last year? >> Yeah. That's why Mrs. Lopez had us make a display for the whole school to see. >> I think that was a good idea. >> We learned that fires have just three things to get started. One, something to burn. That's the fuel. Two, oxygen, which comes from the air, and three, heat. Take any one of them away, and there's no fire. [Applause] There's nothing we can do about the oxygen because air is everywhere. But getting rid of the fuel would be a good start. Is that why Chuck was cleaning out the garage Saturday? >> Yeah, and he made a poster about it for our display. >> His garage sure was a mess. You're home free when you're fuel free. >> Yes, a clean house is a good way to prevent fires. >> No fuel, no fire. Very good. >> We learned that kids playing with matches and grown-ups smoking cigarettes carelessly cause more house fires than anything else does. >> Yes, lots of fires are caused by carelessness at home. >> And electrical fires are dangerous, too. >> They sure are. Overloaded circuits and frayed wires cause fires. >> Well, here's your house. >> Bye, Miss Kingsley. See you tomorrow. >> Take care. Your fire prevention display sounds great. >> Mom. Mom, I'm home. >> Oh, yeah. Mom's over at Aunt Miriam's house. Those basketball games sure makes you hungry. [Applause] One super coming up. A little cheese and I'll have a super burger supreme. [Applause] Fire. Fire. Fire. Help. Fire. >> What? No. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Oh, that was a close one, Guardiana. You were lucky this time, Kevin. Now, fire safety is one area where being alert really pays off. And you made that flame way too high, and you left the paper on the stove. If you were aware of that danger, you could have avoided it. You know, something as simple as a can of baking soda spread on that fire would have given you precious moments to think. >> You're right, safety woman. >> Do you know the danger dodger salute, Kevin? >> Aware, alert, alive. >> That's right. Now, let's review what's meant by the danger dodger motto. Being aware means knowing the dangers that surround us. And being alert involves planning ahead to avoid those dangers. Knowing what to do is what keeps us alive. Getting an early warning can save lives. Many people use smoke detectors in their homes to warn them of a fire before it has a chance to spread. And that's an excellent idea. But knowing what to do after the alarm has sounded even more important. phone immediately and have the fire emergency number taped right to your telephone. >> Always sleep with a flashlight near at hand in case of a power failure. >> I know several ways to get out of the house if fire is blocking the door. >> Well, good for you, Kevin. You know, that should be part of every family's fire survival plan along with regular home fire drills to make sure that that plan is a good one. Now, Kevin, this fire escape plan is something you can share with the other members of your danger dodger club. >> Yeah, I do it myself. >> I see your diagram shows all the main and secondary exits. >> And besides fire prevention, you can practice safety in other ways. Right now, Tommy is taking the door off his old refrigerator. This is a lot of work, but it sure is worth it. Don't want your little kid getting stuck inside and suffocating. Wait till dad gets home from work and sees the good job I've done. Better put dad's tools away. [Applause] Dad's gone. Dad's gone. >> Emergency. I must go. Kevin, danger dodger. I salute you. Aware. Alert. Alive. [Music] Guardiana, the gun wasn't loaded. >> Mommy, the one thing everyone needs to know about guns is this. Every gun is a loaded gun. 600 people of your age died last year from bullets in guns that they thought were empty. For that reason, guns are never to be played with. Not ever. All guns should be safely locked away. >> I'm sorry, Guardiana. >> I know, Tommy, but if we're not alert to dangerous things like a gun, how are we going to avoid the more innocent looking things around our homes that can harm us almost as much? >> Toys certainly don't look as deadly as a gun, but left scattered around on a flight of stairs, they can be just as dangerous. Falls are the most common cause of home injuries. Be sure that hallways and stairwells are well lighted. You know, Tommy, hundreds of boys and girls are badly injured every year in falls around the house. Falls that could be avoided. Picking up your own playings, and helping a younger brother or sister to pick up theirs can save a life. That life could be your own or that of someone you love. >> Golly. We need to make our homes fallproof by cleaning up slippery spills immediately. A wet floor or a slippery tub is a real hazard, Tommy. To prevent falls, be sure to use non-skid material for sure footing and step out onto a dry area. Falls while reaching are especially dangerous. Just last week, for example, Carrie tried to hang a plant from her patio roof. To reach the hook, she had to use a step ladder. But the one she chose was a little too short. She should have used a tall, sturdy ladder. [Music] Wow. You've really got to be careful all the time, don't you, Guardian? >> Yes, but I can't be everywhere at once. See those? They're killers, too. They weren't meant to be. The labels even warn you of the harm they can do. Medicines, cleaning products, and paints should be stored on high shelves, well out of the reach of small children. We all need to learn to read labels more carefully, Tommy. Looking for key words like danger, caution, or poison can alert us to possible harm. And if a poison or harmful substance is swallowed, call your doctor immediately. >> I better start reading labels, huh, Gardiana? >> Right, Tommy. Exactly right. Labels are important, but appliances don't have labels to warn us of electrical shock. Always get permission from your parents before using any electrical tool or appliances. And as a safety precaution, always stand in a dry place when touching anything electrical. Old, worn wiring can cause severe electrical shock or fires. It should be repaired or replaced. You can protect small children by covering electrical outlets with safety caps. >> I won't forget what you've taught me, safety woman. >> Danger dodger, I salute you. [Music] Hey, Miss Kingsley. Do you know the Danger Dodgers salute? >> Well, I think so. [Music] All right, microphone's live. Um, I was just making making fun of Sid because he's he looks at he checks his hair. I mean, obviously I don't check my hair and he makes sure so he's alert, aware of his appearance. Um, those are the three A's. >> So, uh, you guys are young. So, 1977, you weren't even existed. >> Nowhere close. >> Did your parents exist? I mean, your parents exist. >> My Yes. >> Okay. >> But they were young, though. >> So, but they might have seen this as a kid, >> maybe. >> Um, and so we got a little bit of a backstory. And when I first watched this film, I was like, "Huh, this is very similar to another backstory of this show in 1980." >> I'm going to turn down the the uh audio a little bit because I might get my stream might get interrupted because of the copyright. >> Okay. >> Because this the song from Greatest American Hero actually was in the charts. It did really well and the show did really well >> and the premise of it was that you had this I think he was a school teacher >> looks like >> uh and he is approached by aliens who give him special powers to help people and it's all tied to the suit that he has. But he is a very uh he doesn't know what he's doing and so he makes lots of mistakes and It's hilarious. And I used to watch the show with my dad because we It was It was really funny. Like he had all these powers, but he didn't know how to use them. And he was always discovering new powers. >> Um and so, uh let me see if this actually got Okay, we're still alive. I think it um YouTube did not bring it down. Um it was actually really fun. But in watching this, this came out like in 81 and I was like, "Wait, wait a second." Um, and you can watch episodes on Crackle. Uh, I was like, "Wait a minute." Like, this looks really familiar. And there's aspects of it that look super familiar. So, for example, so here's our good friend Guardiana, and you see her logo in the in the corner here in the lower right hand corner. It's three fingers and it's uh then here's the greatest American hero logo. And I gotta say there's some similarities there. >> Yeah. >> Uh I don't know if anybody from this uh safety series um said anything. Uh but yeah, that's really close. Um, and so yeah, there have been times that in the past where I've shown films that did kind of influence feature films. >> There was a film called Ark that was made by Ralph Forsberg who made some wacky Christian films about this society where it's the world is so polluted that there's these green houses that have all of the flora and fauna in them. And then people revolt and they try to get access to the green houses. And then Silent Running came out a couple years later and Ralph Forsberg successfully sued uh Universal and got some money because it was like, "Look, dude, you totally stole my idea." You didn't totally steal it, but came close. Uh so this happens sometimes as people get inspired by educational films. So it's possible. I don't know for sure, but it seems pretty close. Okay. Uh, this next film is, let me adjust the title on this. It's crazy. This is, uh, our good friend Guardiana. And sometimes she's not called Guardiana. Sometimes she's called just safety woman. So, it's kind of weird. So, this one is dealing with the in and out of doors. So, it's in danger, out of doors. Enjoy. [Music] Hi kids. [Music] Hey kids, I bet you're glad it's Friday. You looking forward to the weekend? >> Yeah, Kevin and I are going to go hiking up to the lake. >> Yeah, my big brother's letting me take his boat out. We'll be all right. Our school's starting a danger dodger club. Yeah, we all plan to join. And to stay alive, let's review the rules for water safety. Learn to swim from a qualified instructor who can help and advise you. And stay in shallow water until you know how to swim. Avoid running and horseplay around pools. Learn and practice life saving and rescue breathing. Never go swimming or boating when you're tired. Don't swim when overheated or right after eating. Never dive into water unless you know beforehand how deep the water is because obstacles may lie hidden below the surface. Never swim or boat in an area where there's no one around to help you. And never go boating without a life jacket on. >> Boy, we really goofed. Yeah, we were dumb. >> No, boys. You just made a mistake. One I don't think you'll ever make again. >> Yeah. When we get out of doors, we feel free, but we're never free of the dangers around us. We've always got to stay alert. There was a hiker here last week, for example. Well, he came prepared. He had on good hiking shoes. He carried a snake bike kit and a canteen of water. He had a jacket in his pack in case he got cold, an emergency snack, and even a map of the area. But he made a mistake. He broke the first rule of safe hiking. Never hike alone. Whenever you hike, tell a responsible person where you're going. He decided to do a little climbing. Like so many other hikers who were injured, he went beyond his limits. He called for help. Since he was alone, no one could hear him. >> Help! Help! >> Help! [Music] >> Wow! Lucky for Rodney that you saved him. Yes, but even safety woman can't be everywhere. That's why everyone must practice safety. >> Hey, Chip, can I ride your mini bike around the block once? >> No way, Terry. Kids our age, they're not allowed to ride around on the block. It's illegal for kids our age to be riding around on the streets. >> Then where are you going to ride it? Huh? Well, after I get it adjusted, my dad and I are going to go up to Uncle Jack's ranch. And up there is private property, so it's okay for us to ride it. >> Take me with you. I'll ask your dad. He'll let me. >> Wrong. Again, he wouldn't even let you get on it without the proper equipment. >> What equipment? >> Over here. Boots, gloves, leather jacket, helmet. >> You must fall down a lot, huh? >> Even the best riders take spills, Terry. That's why they all come prepared. No one should ride a mini bike who isn't wearing the proper helmet and clothing. >> Jeff, come on. >> No, you can't ride it. >> You're no fun. Keep your old mini bike. Don't ask to borrow my skateboard. Jeff, look out. Look out. >> I must leave. Aware. Alert. Alive. [Music] My skateboard. Guardiana, you saved me. >> Yes, Terry, but that was too close. And our town does have a paved area set aside for skateboarding. And if I'm not mistaken, it's only four blocks from where we're standing right now. Here, you won't be in danger from cars, and you won't endanger pedestrians. Helmets and pads are required so everyone can have fun without the risk of serious injury. >> Boy, Terry, you almost blew it. look good that time by this much. If Guardian, Jeff, I think Terry just forgot that sometimes the only way to avoid danger is to stay away from the places where danger is at. An abandoned car might look like fun, but jagged edges, broken glass, and other hidden dangers can spell trouble. What other places should we stay away from, Jeff? >> The railroad tracks. >> Good, Jeff. What else? >> Power lines, >> right? Can you think of some, Terry? >> Places where they're building new houses and things. >> Good. What else? >> Or dirty old vacant lots like on Peach Street. >> That's right. Being alert means staying away from those places. Every town has parks and playgrounds and places where you can have fun safely. >> You see, Terry, here you can have fun and not have to worry about traffic. [Music] >> My problem is I keep forgetting important things like being alert. >> Well, we all forget, Terry. It takes practice to keep aware and alert. And there are lots of new dangers that we have to look out for, too. That's why schools have safety clubs like the Danger Dodgers. >> Then maybe I should join one while I'm still in one piece. >> Terry, you're going to be all right. Danger Dodgers, I salute you. >> We won't forget. Safety Woman. >> Aware, alert, alive. [Music] Hey, Miss Kingsley. You'll never guess what happened last Saturday. >> Oh, really? Well, I'd like to hear all about it. [Music] Okay, microphone's live. Uh, Danger Dodgers. Um, and somebody pointed out in the comments that this is basically flipping somebody off. And someone else said that the her logo looks more like a manora than fingers. And that's what I was thinking too. They look like candles. >> Oh, yeah. Yeah, they do. Actually, it's a good point. Um, >> are they supposed to be candles? >> Yeah, I don't know. >> It's like on the little on her shield. >> Let's see. Um, where are we? Let's look back at that at that uh graphic. So, it does look like candles. It's kind of a layman's only three. >> Yeah. But, you know, part of it is you could also say that those are fingernails. >> That's true. >> Because, you know, she's got long nails. >> So, yeah. I don't know. Yeah, maybe. >> Um, >> I like all the kid dynamics >> of like >> kids being annoyed with each other and and all that stuff. It's kind of fun. And I guess somebody pointed out that those kids are my age. So, I was 11 when this film came out. I didn't see this film as as a kid because we were in a poor school that wasn't really uh doing doing stuff. Oh, so I need to set up what the next film is. Uh because I have not done that. Um where is it? It's on this drive. Uh so in the course of uh going through all these red film cans um I noticed a title that was compelling and it was safety peril rides the roads and I was like huh and I thought about it and I was like oh it's part of that uh um safety series, but I didn't really know for sure because there's there's multiple films that I have that have safety dot dot dot and then whatever the name of the film is. So, I took it home, took it and got it scanned. So, here's the film. And so, this is just so you know, in case you didn't know, we have 37,000 films and I haven't seen all of them. And in some collections, I've seen more of than others. And this was part of a collection I got from University of South Carolina that they had gotten from some school system and um we got them and then CO happened and I just haven't had a chance. They've been offsite so I haven't had a chance to go through the collection. Uh so uh I'm very excited to discover this film and so this is the mystery third part. They don't call it a trilogy. It's a series which means that they're not meant to be shown in order which means that you get to hear the backstory again. So have fun with that. So this is the because I look for this on the internet to see and certainly uh this has been rifted by Rift Tracks. that the other films have and people have watched them and I've made them available and Rick Pellinger put them online uh and we both love the uh Guardiana series and so he got very excited that I found the third one because he doesn't have it and so uh here it is for you the world premiere in the 21st century of Peril Rides the Road. Got to get them before the janitor cleans up this morning. What run? [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Woo! That was close, Guardiana. Too close, Tommy. Much too close. You know, more than 900 boys and girls of your age lost their lives last year because they weren't alert while crossing the street. Were you aware of the danger, Tommy? >> Well, I knew that there was a mean dog there, and I see that stop sign every morning, but this morning, I guess I was in too much of a hurry. >> We need to get into the right habits, Tommy. So, when emergencies happen, we do the right thing. You remember the rules for safe walking? I know you do. Cross only at the corners, never in the middle of the block. Cross at corners with traffic lights whenever possible. Always cross on a new green light or walk signal, but always look both to the left and right for turning cars before stepping off the curb. Keep to your right in the crosswalk. Never cross at a corner with the car approaching until the car has come to a full stop and you make eye contact with the driver. If you see his eyes, he probably sees yours. Then check the other lanes of traffic from moving or turning vehicles before crossing. And always walk facing the traffic in areas where there are no sidewalks. And pedestrians should wear something light at night so they can be easily seen. >> Good safety habits require practice. >> And to help me remember the rules, I'm going to join the Danger Dodger Club. >> Good. Now, show me the Danger Dodger salute. >> Aware. >> Aware. >> Alert. >> Alert. >> Alive. >> Alive. >> You see, Tommy, being aware means knowing the dangers around us. Looks like I'm not the only early bird up this morning. Are you going to walk that bike all the way to school, Lynn? >> I sure am. That's why I started so early. This is my brother's old bike. I volunteered to bring it for Mr. Brown's safety test today. >> Mr. Brown says safety begins with a safe bicycle. >> That means before you even get on it, you have to inspect it. >> Really? >> Mr. Brown has a safety checklist. His first rule is put some strain on the chain. It looks like it needs tightening. >> Yeah. >> His next rule is bear down on the brakes. Those brakes look like they need work. Rule number three is test the tires. Good. All firm. Aok. Okay. Next, check the handlebars. >> These are loose. >> They sure are. How about checking the seat? >> The saddle's okay. And my feet reached the pedals. >> Well, now I know why you're walking that bicycle. It's in very poor condition. >> Yeah, like Andrew. He'd be in poor condition if it weren't for Safety Woman. >> Really? What happened? >> Well, last week Andrew was biking home from little league practice and he had so much stuff on his handlebars he couldn't see the road. [Music] [Applause] Andrew, did you forget the rules of the road? A bicycle, like a car, is a vehicle. A clear view is important, so don't overload it. Bicycle riders have to obey all traffic rules just as the drivers of cars do. And you ride your bike on the right hand side of the road with traffic just like the cars. A bicyclist should be able to recognize traffic signs and symbols by their shape and color. But unlike cars, bicycles should be walked across intersections not ridden. And bike riders should be even more alert than motorists for objects lying in the street. Be sure to keep safe following distances which allow time to stop. And if you ride with a friend, ride in single file, never side by side. Riding defensively is the smart thing to do, Andrew. That means be on the lookout for possible danger ahead of you. Keep an eye on cars which may be ready to pull out, car doors opening, and never insist on the ride of way. Remember, the rules are for your safety. >> I'm going to ride by the rules of the road from now on, Guardiana. >> I'm sure you will, Andrew. Danger dodger, I salute you. You know, safety woman can't be everywhere at once. Andrew was very lucky. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, he was. Let's go see if Sus is ready yet. Do we have time? >> At least 15 minutes. Never go towards the bus until it has come to a complete stop and the bus driver has opened the door. Be polite and orderly when boarding the bus and when taking your seats. I don't think I was completely aware of that. >> Maybe like subconsciously I was aware of that >> as far as taking away the fuel or the oxygen or the uh the heat. >> Yeah. >> Well, I think there are definitely parts that are outdated. I think someone was saying in the chat like they didn't mention helmets at all. Like that's >> Yeah, there wasn't I think with the skateboarding they did, but definitely not with the bike. And uh yeah, and this one didn't even touch upon Stranger Danger at all. >> Oh yeah. >> Yeah, Stranger Danger. There's some other films that anytime they go outside or there's walking, there's a talk about Stranger Danger. So, um >> that's true. >> Uh and yeah, we didn't see uh Safety Woman do any architect uh work. >> She was always like right about to put her pen down and some kids about to die or something. So, um, given and also she was really up on the stats as far as the number of kids that were killed in various situations. So, >> um, yeah, she tried to figure out a way to get the full-time job doing Safety Woman >> um because those uh sunglasses were pretty good. So, uh, thank you so much for joining us today uh you folks uh and also you folks out there in the world. Um, today was a special day discovering I was kind of in a funk and I discovered that that third Safety Woman film and I got super excited which tells me that I'm still very much a geek about all this stuff like that has not gone away. The fact that I'm like oh my gosh I found the and I told Katrina and she was like what I was like you know you know safety woman say she's like oh yeah I was like no you don't understand it's a third one it's we found it. So, I know that I'm even when I'm like depressed because of headlines or whatever, I know I'm it's still in there. That that that gleeful joy of discovering this weird niche film like got me super excited. So, uh thank you for celebrating this with me. Thank you guys for celebrating with this.
