e e hi everybody I'm skip alimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films when we have power uh and so uh on Friday we had a big storm coming through and I decided to be clever and show films about big storms and flooding and Uh I cautioned that I might lose power and sure enough lost power for about an hour um right during the uh streaming show so sorry uh I thought about going back on but everything was in a state of kind of chaos as far as rebooting systems here and all that stuff so I kind of passed but I have some films that I wanted to show you that um were preempted by the loss of power here's Adventures of Junior raindrop enjoy [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] have you ever wondered about a raindrops family let's drop in on Papa cloud and junior [Music] rrop uhoh junior get up get up it's time for you to visit your mother earth oh Pop let's stay here with you stop your pouting and mind you behave yourself get along now off with [Music] you outome millions of Earthbound [Music] raindrops ouch fine welcome this here Mother Earth can't kick me around I'll run away so Junior joins a group of other raindrops looking for excitement the bear soil speeds them on their way nobody seems to care what they do as he passes by Junior hears some plants talking some are so sick from having too many cows and sheep chewing on them it will take years to get well other plants are dying from the same cause they say unless fewer cattle and sheep are allowed on watersheds like this ruin will follow gosh I hope this watered isn't made better cuz if it is we can't slide on it anymore oh well let's leave Junior to himself for while you know little runaway raindrop love forests where too many trees have been cut down and range lands that are overg grazed they especially love burned Oaks like this to dig their heels into these hoodlum raindrops leave a trail of erosion wasting soil that is needed to grow plants for grazing cattle and sheep and trees for Timber so soil that is needed for growing food soil needed to store some of that water they choke streams boiling water needed for our Farms our Industries and homes they leave silt in reservoirs wasted work reservoirs are built to store water not mud well I wonder what's happened to Junior just what High feared he's formed a gang and they're whooping it up for a flash flood they're rushing down the [Music] canyon they made a wall of water 20 ft High look out to late now junior is a real Outlaw no longer satisfied with floods the gang is planning bigger and wetter floods Junior's getting dangerous he's getting tougher and Boulder every day now he's top gangster heading for the big time raging along waging gang war robbing destroying killing and all because somebody started a forest fire somebody cut down too many trees somebody put too many cattle and sheep on this range well sir pop cloud is pretty disgusted with man's carelessness he knows it isn't Mother Earth's fault she just isn't getting cooperation from enough people in the USA everybody is affected by the way watersheds are managed and everybody ought to do something about it it's too bad Junior didn't know his watersheds and land on a good one Junior and all the other raindrops could be useful if they're treated right if they were welcomed on a cushion of plants trees grass and leaves they would seep slowly through the earth into Springs trickle into streams keep house for the fish and play with Fisherman's lines they would Splash in lakes and pools and fill irrigation ditches with clear drinks for Farm crops and orchids in ever increasing numbers they would use their excess energy to Supply Power and Light for people's needs supporting ships of Commerce the raindrops finally enter the ocean until more people cut only trees that can be spared without damaging the land and plant seedlings as needed improve their management of range lands by allowing no more cattle and sheep than there's grass to feed and Reed when necessary until more people are careful not to start forest fires we can't expect Little Raindrops to behave so pop cloud has signaled the sun to bring Junior back time to talk things over about how Earth folks for their own good should play fair with [Music] raindrops gosh it's good to be back here with you pup and I'm glad glad to have you home again with me [Music] son that's so great my hair my hair what's going on with my hair um the animated film the juvenile delinquent uh teenager goes wild um man really really something uh and the thing was like I didn't uh I didn't know that it was going to talk about flooding I just thought it was about water in general and Rain um and we had some flooding here in Raleigh um it wasn't as bad as it could have been so thankfully okay so behind me I have a film scanner uh uh all the films are mostly offsite uh right now which makes it harder for me to just go back and pull a film because the the rooms are empty and I'll try to give you a sense of what that all looks like maybe tomorrow uh oh I downloaded a file uh anyways this was a straggler film that I found as we were moving shelves out and uh it it kind of is time L but it's not and I'll explain why um it's really not timely but it just seems timely in my confused head uh it's well well well enjoy [Music] well well well [Music] what was that that was a siren sound scary well of course it's scary someone could be hurt or in trouble it could be an emergency oh no emerc call for quick action emergencies happen in a fraction of time I'm sure you'll agree that there really are no warnings in emergencies a firey in the fireplace fire in the furnace are in their proper places oh of course they will not burn us but if by chance a fire starts where it's not meant to be then what you got my friend is an emergency emergencies call for quick action emergencies happen in a fraction of time I'm sure you'll agree that there really are no warnings in emergencies now if somebody is late and it's causing them to worry and they want to get a move on so they move on in a hurry they don't wait for the light they just race across the street if a driver doesn't see them and suddenly they meet emergencies call for quick action emergencies happen in a fraction of time I'm sure you'll agree that there really are no warnings in emergencies emergencies don't have to just be accidents or fires they can also be trouble in the water or a robbery but no matter what they always require quick action emergeny call quick action emergency happen in a fraction of time now what would you do if somehow somewhere somewhere emergency involved a friend or you [Music] this is Professor UB schmart speaking to you from my research center where I have been studying emergencies I have determined that emergencies are usually dangerous and scary situations they happen without warning and they often cause harm emergencies can happen to me to you or to someone we know now my research has also shown that you can do more to help yourself or someone else in an emergency if you are prepared or have it planned if an emergency happens try to remain calm very calm if you feel confused take a moment to organize your thoughts and then call for help around my laboratory I try to be prepared for all emergencies I have a fire extinguisher in case a fire should start I have a first a kit in case I should get a cut or a scrape I have a telephone in case someone should try to break in while I'm here and I can call the police and if some sneaky Thief should try to creep in here when I'm not around well I have invented a foolproof Thief catching net all it takes is to press this button to set the net now it's someone walks through my laboratory it will activate the device I'm pretty clever no oh yes well it's it's time to check on another experiment help GM oh help help I feel so confused I'll take a moment to calm down oh I know I'll call for help help help sounds like the professor has gotten himself into a jam again but if I know the professor it's probably a difficult situation and not a real emergency still I better go check it out you see each situation must be dealt with in its own special way your actions and decisions will change depending on where where you are who can help and just exactly what the situation is coming Professor what do I do if I see somebody in trouble in the water if you do see somebody who is in the water and is in danger find the nearest lifeguard or an adult we will help them out of the water what would I do if I saw someone breaking the law if you see a crime in progress call 911 on your operator as quickly as you can be sure to stay on the line we would like to know where the crime is happening and a description of what is happening if I see an accident what should I do if you see an accident call 911 or your operator and stay on the phone tell them the location of the accident the type of accident and your name and we'll be there very quickly what would I do if I saw a house on fire if you see a fire call 911 or your local operator give them the location of the fire stay on the telephone cuz I want to ask you some questions I want to know your name your address and what is on fire remember don't go near the fire I got the professor out of his Thief catching net he's fine and back at work now and I was right it was not an emergency but if he had been seriously hurt with a broken arm or leg then I would have called an ambulance or taken him to the hospital emergency room [Music] [Applause] have you ever wondered why an ambulance goes racing down the street so fast with his lights and sirens on have you ever wondered if he's going to some kind of Emergency the ambulance is like an emergency room on Wheels inside we carry all kinds of equipments for all kinds of problems which will help you in your emergency if you have an emergency dial 911 or the operator in the back of the ambulance we have things to help you if you're burned if you're in a car accident if you swallow poisons if you're feeling sick or ill don't be surprised if a fire truck comes to your emergency where you may be sick if you've fallen off a swing set and broken a bone or not feeling well at home they are trained in first aid as well as the paramedics and can hand help you in your emergency situations suppose you were on the playground and broke your arm someone would dial 911 or the operator and we would come to you and put on the airplan which we will show you [Music] the ash blend immobilizes the fracture it's similar to a temporary cast you slide it on person's arm and you inflate it with your mouth with air then next you squeeze the fingers make sure the cast isn't too tight that it cuts off the circulation and then you transport to the hospital slim slim where are you slim I'm right here pillow what's the matter oh I'm so glad to see you I'm was lonely and frightened I thought I heard some strange noises outside like someone trying to break in where were you I was helping Professor schmart well I'm glad you're back I feel better now I guess I was just being silly I was waiting here all alone by yourself on your own when I started to feel scared I'm not sure why the very next minute I started to cry our home sweet home didn't seem the same it got all dark and strange I called and called and called your name it made me scared to feel the change I'm sorry for your pain dear friend and I am really sorry for your fear let me hold you nice and close relax calm down I am here I understand your feelings CA I felt the same way too did you really yes I did what happen to you well I remember when I was younger I came home to an empty house uh-huh my parents had gone out visiting uh-huh and they had left me a key and something to eat good well I came in turned on the lights in the radio and made a sandwich and started eating and then I heard some strange noises uh-oh the windows and the doors were locked but I was getting nervous my imagination was getting the better of me I know what you mean I know it may sound silly but I got into bed and pulled the covers over my head that doesn't sound silly and then the phone rang who was it it was grandma she was calling to find out how I was doing good I told her about the strange noises uhoh she said not to worry it was the wind blowing the trees against the house oh then she gave me her number and told me to call her back I got scared again boy I felt much better after that you know pillow everybody needs someone on whom they can depend a person they can talk with like a neighbor family or a friend you're my friend I'm your [Music] friend Troopers here's General Health commander of the international Health Brigade Troopers when emergencies happen it's important to know what to do and so I want you to make my emergency action plan a habit there are three main points number one stay calm when an emergency happens yes sir stay calm number two collect the facts what where when and who yes sir the facts number three call for help yes sir call for help there are three telephone numbers you ought to have handy your home number the number of a relative or friend and the number of the police either 911 or zero for operator remember troops be prepared dismissed that was good advice from the general keeping a cool head and knowing whom to call for help are good ways to face an emergency and if you ever do have to call for help be sure you know your own address the name of your street and the number of your house or apartment emergencies call for quick action emergencies happen in a fraction of time I'm sure you'll agree that there really are no warnings in emergencies [Music] [Applause] [Music] what where when and [Music] who thank you [Music] emergencies call for quick action emergencies happen in a fraction but now you know just what to do if somewhere somehow someway someday emergencies happen to a friend or you [Music] wow wow wow wow wow uh um that I was not expecting that uh slim good buddy uh of course is uh surreal in his own right and I actually met him um this was in the early 2000s and uh I took time off of work because I heard that he was doing a bunch of programs for school kids and that you could buy tickets and so uh we went and it was me and I think uh three other folks and uh I of course wore my uh skeleton uh articulated skeleton uh t-shirt uh to match his wonderful wonderful spandex bodysuit that makes people uncomfortable and that's his perm he started I guess cropping it down or his curly hair uh he's still alive uh and he gets often mistaken for Richard Simmons rest in peace because they both had a similar look in the 80s uh in late 70s um he was actually so uh he was on Captain Kangaroo um slim good buddy and uh so I remember seeing him I was way too old to be watching Captain Kangaroo but it was on the background and I remember seeing some of his episodes I think he also had a show on PBS um so anyways uh all right uh here's another film that I was going to show Friday but the power went out um this is part of the your chance to live it features things that we love um doomsday scenarios awesome synth soundtracks and of course Peter Thomas enjoy [Music] for [Music] the rains have stopped but not before several days of torrential storms have inundated most of the Northeast and now floods of enormous and almost unprecedented magnitude are threatening the cities and towns along even the smallest [Music] tributaries but in Larry Fletcher's mind the aftermath of the storm only represents a challenge he has assumed that the rains have deepened and made more exciting the once shallow and gentle creeks near his home and he's decided to meet this [Music] challenge Larry soon discovers however that he has been wrong The Familiar Creeks he is explored since he was very young have risen only slightly over their normal level disappointed but undaunted Larry Fletcher decides to continue on heading Downstream toward the river very shortly however Larry's only thoughts will be of his own Survival [Music] to anyone Upstream the incredible foolishness of Larry's decision is obviously clear the river once slow moving and Placid has been trans formed into a raging uncontrollable [Music] torrent debris and Fallen trees are sped along swirling insanely in the Muddy Waters and the river has not crested yet the severity of the storm and the flooding it has caused are not unknown to Larry attentively he has listened to radio reports of mounting casualties mounting damage he has listened to reports of frenzied efforts at sandbagging before the river crests but now caught up in his own private Adventure all of that is lost on him it all seems so far away if anything occurs to him it is the thrill of anticipation the anticipation of canoeing over what was only a few days ago dry [Music] land Upstream work continues as the pressures Mount some people are evacuated streets are flooded businesses are forced to close the water escaped from its boundaries is everywhere polluting everything it touches and the normal routine of day-to-day living is brought to an abrupt [Music] halt if there is any Saving Grace about floods it is that they are predictable days sometimes weeks in advance this time this advanced warning allows people to protect themselves by stocking up on Essentials in cities industry uses the time it has to move valuable perishables to safety so that the effects of the flood will be less disruptive to Commerce and if all else fails areas of special danger are evacuated or sealed off [Music] the water that slips past Larry Fletcher's canoe is surprisingly quiet the calm of his surroundings is a striking contrast to frantic rescue and sandbagging operations not far from him somewhere in the back of his mind he may have stored the warnings he has heard yet Common Sense the common sense not to continue remains ignored as Larry continues his still Pleasant [Music] Journey the area covered by the flood waterers continues to spread more and more ground slips underwater vast Inland seas are created where there was nothing but flat Farmland before and the river still hasn't crested for Larry Fletcher the reality of his precarious situation should be obvious to him but it isn't the water around him so recently gentle has increased in speed the adventure he has been seeking is finally a reality as Larry Works to control his canoe in the accelerating current there is no fear no anxiet only the exhilaration he had hoped for [Music] oh [Music] and then it happens sometimes all the effort the preparations the man-made fortresses against the flood work and lives and property are saved sadly in this case they are swept aside like so many toys before the irresistible pressures of the river's Prest a pent up wall of water surges Downstream and Larry Fletcher's fantasy Adventure in the midst of of a growing tragedy is over caught up in the torrent of water created by the burst Dam his canoe has been swamped leaving him at the mercy of the swollen River he fights with all his strength for his life and prays for Rescue [Music] oh oh [Music] in a flood as in any disaster a warning and knowledge of what to do is all the help an individual can be sure of don't count on luck [Music] e what happened where'd it go I thought I had time left I'm sorry I was this is what my life is I was weighing a hard drive weighing a hard drive that's what we do here at avgeeks way hard drives all right sorry about that um did it did it actually end or did it just uh anyways sorry behind me I have a film set up on the scanner watch this one uh this is one so in for the last couple of months for this whole year we've been moving films off site and so almost all of them are gone now and what that's allow us to do it's certainly a pain to now go find them cuz we have to go offsite we have to drive a couple of Miles um you know we have to go and get access use Keys now I have all these sets of [Music] keys um but what the nice side of this is thatc every time we move films we discover new films and these are films that for what whatever reason we just missed because they weren't set up in front of us and so this is an example of just such a film uh this is who are you kidding enjoy [Music] what aor thing oops excuse me my dear we must turned the [Music] corner ah WC how thoughtful [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you're looking at a closeup of an American Tragedy today in these United States over 30 million people wear dentures and all of them are not by any means in their 60s and 7s in fact many of those denture wearers are in their 20s and 30s what happened to their teeth the 32 teeth that are meant to last a lifetime why why do most of us suffer from tooth decay and gum disease how come millions of Americans can now shout look ma no teeth while teeth come out of our mouths sugar comes out of our ears an overabundance of sugar always means bad news today an improper diet contributes to much of our widespread tooth decay gum disease and loss of teeth yet when it comes to cleaning our teeth all too many of us only kid ourselves but the greatest problem is our Happ has it approach to dental health the result is a buildup of plaque which Harbors bacteria these can cause Decay and gum disease once you form the habit of complete home care you can just about say goodbye to trouble and say hello to your natural teeth every morning for the rest of your life complete Home Care begins with dental floss this loosens debris and cleans plaque from between your teeth where your brush cannot reach your dentist will show you how to use floss safely and effectively there are a number of acceptable methods of brushing but the important thing is that you reach all the exposed surfaces of each and every tooth in this method the bristles are directed toward the gum line a favorite spot for bacteria to multiply next step rinse your mouth thoroughly to remove all particles finally to make sure you're cleaning your teeth properly you can use special disclosing tablets or solutions that will color any plaque and debris that your floss and brush may have missed this will show you when you're doing a good job check with your dentist on the type of two toothbrush he wants you to use remember worn bristles are bad what kind of toothpaste some are too abrasive others claim they whiten teeth which isn't true the best contain fluoride to be safe look for the Seal of the American Dental Association there you are a do-it-yourself survival kit for those precious teeth of yours those teeth you're supposed to keep for Keeps to make your kit complete though consult your dentist for professional guidance man bumped into me how does that old song go again I'd walk a million miles for one of your smiles [Music] [Music] and then uh the webcam died uh I was staying right here and then suddenly the webcam went and then stopped working and so I'm now using the webcam that's with the um iMac which is not great but we do what we can all right uh WC Fields kind of made this weird reemergence um in the 70s and uh it's like oh yeah yeah that guy he was hilarious uh and I personally think he was hilarious but the way he was used was just very strange and I was I've relayed this before but there was a time that there was a character called WC Fritos and he sold Fritos and I was U I love Fritos I still love Fritos um it is my chip of choice and uh I was a member of the Fredo fan club and so there was all this uh stuff I got a certificate I got a button I think sticker um coupon probably that was one of the few things things that I sent away for uh as a kid uh mailed uh some proof of purchase things and probably a buck I don't know anyways uh let's see one last thing and I don't think I've SE shown this I'm hoping that I haven't shown this um this is uh breaking the sound barrier enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] cracking the sound barrier in the X1 marked another milestone in aviation history the time October 14th 194 7 the place Air Force flight test center at mura California the pilot Captain Chuck joerger Captain joer was selected to test the top performance of this rocket propelled research vehicle he found it to be a sleek and sturdy aircraft designed by Bell to fly faster than the speed of [Music] sound the X1 holds 5,20 lb of fuel nearly 1/ half of its total weight when launched the delicate process of fueling takes 1 [Music] hour the rocket engine propellant is made up of liquid oxygen and water alcohol the latter being pressurized by gaseous nitrogen great caution must be exercised during the fueling operation since the fuel system in the X1 has an explosive potential equal to that of its own weight in TNT in the rocket blast Sonic beads can be seen during this test firing of the engine a special electrical igniter is used in the combustion Chambers to fire the Rockets with all four rocket tubes firing the X1 will produce a Thrust of 6,000 lb the engine occupies a space 19 in in diameter by by 56 in long and weighs but 210 lb a special pit has been constructed into which the X1 is lowered for loading into the b29 Mother [Applause] Ship this bomber has been specially modified for aerial launchings of the X1 due to close clearances the loading procedure takes a considerable amount of time the X1 is suspended by fabric strap with cable holders after many months of planning testing and preparation the X1 becomes Airborne on its first attempt to exceed the speed of [Music] sound a climb must be made to 30,000 ft to reach drop altitude while the b29 with the X1 ascends to altitude radar goes to work tracking the mission the aircraft's flight data will be telemetered to the ground crew throughout the flight the b29 has now reached drop altitude the time for release is Drawing Near for high altitude flight Captain joerger wears an emergency pressure suit as he enters the cockpit of the X1 a manually operated elevator provides safe access for the pilot before the drop [Music] with a checkout of the launching procedure completed between Captain joerger and the crew of the b29 synchronized timing begins 5 4 4 3 2 1 [Music] drop scores of people connected with the X1 flight program have expected the aircraft to surpass the speed of sound and maybe this is it with all four Rockets firing jger climbs to 56,000 ft in less than 2 minutes [Music] minutes and he does it the first human to crack the sound [Music] barrier now with propellent exhausted jerger reduces his speed and altitude to come in for a dead stick landing at 160 mph at this hot landing speed the X1 rolls for more than 2 and 1/2 miles and one of the Air Force's best known flight test pilots has just set the pace for further research in Upper air investigation this flight marks the first milestone in the supersonic chapter in the history of Aviation and you were there [Music] hooray um yeah that was some footage we've been working with a collection of stuff from the National Archives and so that was a nice little gem um thank you for tuning in to today and thank you especially to Jeremy and uh to uh Richard for um donating to the cause it it feels like you've donated because uh I um was a member of the Fredo uh fan club and this was before the Fredo Bandido I think maybe after I don't know but it was somewhere it was I was not Fredo Bandido I was this WC Fredo um fan uh somewhere I have the paperwork uh it'll be important to have all my documents ready um at some point and so my birth certificate my uh driver's license my passport and of course my uh College transcript and my Fredo fan club certificate all right thank you so much for tuning in today very much appreciate your eyeballs and your patience with technical issues as we have them or uh moments of uh lack of attention where I'm like la la la la la how much does this weigh well what if I add this to it um we still watch some stuff right that's that's good um um we still heard some Peter Thomas which is always great and um anyways if you like what you saw or at least like the concept of what you saw hit the thumbs up or the like button it's weird so YouTube is it's flagging me for weird things like I just got some sort of privacy violation thing where someone said that their privacy was violated by one of my films and it's a Mr Clean ad from the 60s I I don't understand I really don't understand what is happening there I took it down because I'm like it's not worth whatever then I got a copyright strike for uh this I am Joe stomach which is in the public domain and has been claimed by some Mexican educational video company and so I I'm trying to figure out a way to combat that so all these are like bogus and yet they they definitely impact me being able to show you films and videos from my collection and um and what's strange is I don't know it's just it's very frustrating because there's there's very little I can do to say like no hey hey a human being uh at YouTube uh just look and see what this is all about because this is not correct so anyways while we're still doing it we're still doing it and we'll keep doing it until they tell us we can't do it anymore so hit those thumbs ups and those likes uh support us by going to ko-fi.com avgeeks or patreon.com avgeeks um yeah try to play by the rules but the rules keep changing so everybody have a great rest of your day and I'll see you tomorrow enjoy uh the rest of your day and yeah take a break stop stop reading headlines go do go grocery shopping or go do something productive um and get off your phone all right love you guys bye e
