foreign welcome home Herman and Lucy from their long trip 1953 visiting California and Phoenix um yeah a lot of footage of people that's uh one of the things I talked about last week was that some home movies it's about the people it's about the family and some are it's about the place it's about the landscape it's about the landmarks Etc uh anyways welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and uh here's how [Music] how do you do Neighbors I'm your old friend Norman brokenshire you know I'd like to show you some of the little tricks that will make your living room or any other room so much more colorful and so much more attractive you know so often our rooms have problems that color and paint can solve as easy as that and yet paint costs so little and gives so much pleasure and satisfaction suppose for example the ceiling seems too low you can make it seem higher simply by painting it a lighter color on the other hand if it seems too high you can paint it the same color as the walls see how that ceiling comes down another way is to carry the ceiling color down the wall several inches the eye accepts the dividing line as the ceiling height now if the room seems too long you can make the end walls come closer by painting them a darker color like this on the other hand you can apparently lengthen the room by painting the end walls a lighter color than the others yes neighbors a little paint in the right place will do wonders for your room and the most remarkable thing about paints today is that they're so mighty easy to apply and paint for the average room costs less than ten dollars now let me show you how you can make your painting go even faster whether you're going to use the four inch brush or the roller coater the principle is the same first we do what they call cutting we use a small brush and we cut in around the edges of the trim that means around the windows around the doors on top of the baseboard and in the corners you know that it's very simple to cut in and very pleasant and you can save as much as 20 of your operating time with this cutting method now that you're caught in it's very simple to fill in with a four inch brush and equally easy to fill in with a roller coiler we first saturate the coder and then we proceed you see how very simple it is that's the roller coater method now let me give you a very simple tip on how to paint best with a brush and a flat wall paint when you use a brush method you use always the short circular Strokes Feathering off each stroke and always remember work from the dry areas into the wet paint friends with today's fast drying paints you can paint the walls of your room in the morning and entertain in that very room later the same day and you'll have a colorful new room for just a few dollars of course choosing the right color is very important so you should visit your paint dealer and let him show you the wonderful rainbow of colors he has for you remember what I say neighbors let your paint dealer help you with your painting he'll be glad to recommend a qualified painting contractor if you wish and if you want in the afternoon would not work be like what's that smell like don't touch that that's still drying uh all right so behind me I have a film scanner and we're gonna watch a film uh brought To Us by AIT and I think it's Canadian but it's not National film Board of Canada so I feel like I'm going to be safe in showing this but who knows we'll see what happens this is a give take uh you choose enjoy not painting houses yeah I know but we've only got one week and I want to make some money hey come here why don't you just take this Java horses no not enough money and we've painted your room a million times look all I told Mrs Schultz was we check it out okay I'm not forcing you to work with me no no find someone else who wants to make several hundred dollars foreign and help me buy the supplies Lily and June have only one week of vacation time their limited time is a scarce resource there are several things they can do with this scarce time they can use the time to relax they can use the time to work part-time and make some money and still have some time for relaxation or they can use all their time to paint Mrs Schultz's rooms what is their problem the problem is scarcity how should they use their limited time what are their alternatives no work some work all work no work some work all work what's important to them what are their criteria to relax or to make money a decision-making chart can help solve the problem if the girls don't work they can use all of their vacation time to relax but they will not earn any money if they use some of their vacation time to work they would have some time to relax [Music] and they would make some money [Music] oh if they use all their vacation time to work they would have no time to relax but would make lots of money [Music] they must evaluate their alternatives and decide do you really think we could make that much for sure okay it's a family reunion my relatives come from all across the country but here in this room I want the walls and the trim painted would you like to see the other rooms oh yes please uh here in the dining room uh I want just the walls painted we'll uh leave the woodwork the way it is and um there's the kitchen and out here see there's quite a lot of woodwork and the cupboards and the walls that's it it's a big jaw not that big just three rooms the painters looked at it said they couldn't come before three weeks but the reunion's a week tomorrow oh excuse me hello I'm Millie I have a couple of girls here Billy we only have a week's vacation we can do it in one week yeah we won't have time to do anything else I'll ask them the money tune think of the money sure it'll be a lot of work make at least 500. you really think she'll pay us that much foreign do you have any experience at painting uh my father is Chester Navarro he's a professional painter and I've watched him work since I was eight years old and sometimes he lets me help him too well we've painted my room lots of times yeah yeah that's right you can call up her mother and ask her she'll tell you we do good work this is a lot bigger job than just painting one room and what about the paint you use good quality paint the best we'll let you choose the brand you may have to mix a special color to match my drapes will at the paint store do that will you guarantee that you'll be finished on time oh yes we'll be done before the reunion uh we'll put it in writing that is if you can afford the price now that's a very good question you see the painters wanted a thousand dollars and that would be impossible on my budget well we can do it for much less than that you can how does 700 sound well that sounds acceptable that's great Mrs Schultz you won't be sorry [Music] there we go great your dad does know about this doesn't he uh he'll like the idea that I'm making money instead of spending it well I've already spent about 200 on paint brushes and tools I didn't think it would cost that much but look after Mrs Schultz pays us we'll still make 500 oh yeah well you can show that to him now Lily Mr Schultz for me to check up on you I think you should give back the paint and tell her you can do the job she can't do that why not well I've already mixed this paint it's a special color this is wrong you never before did such a big painting job we have a contract and I've given Mrs Schultz my word as in the barrel yeah we're gonna do it where'd you get the money to pay for this June and I took it out of our savings but how do you know you're going to make some money painting takes a lot of time and a lot of materials we will but what if you don't we will we've given our word dad 39.55 [Music] thanks [Music] listen to this two guns of paint 35 dollars wallpaper remover 498 one small brush 4.99 tax 347. okay okay we'll still make money what if we don't finish on time we'll just have to work harder and get it done lily look at these if I work any hard I'll be one giant blister by the end of this vacation it's hotter than you thought it much harder Mr Navarro you should see this place it's huge Lily we could use some advice don't you think she doesn't want my help well I'm asking as a professional would you come look at the shelter's place and tell us how we're doing I think you should look beautiful when you're finished when do you think that'll be Mr nibira well you're doing all three rooms fish yeah little patching the right you're going I figure about three days no we don't have three days PA how are you fix for money you have enough to hire a third brush three painters could finish this job in two days but if we pay someone to help us we'll make even less money maybe we better work late every night instead okay let's see if we can straighten up this thing the first thing is you have to define the problem exactly then maybe we can find a different way to deal with it some different Alternatives okay now what exactly is the problem the problem is that we have a lot of work to do and not much time and how time is a real scarce resource and our money is disappearing before our eyes okay so the way I see it I think the two Alternatives you have are working nights or higher help okay but what is important to you what is your your criteria we took this job for the money okay money it'd be nice to have at least our evenings free I mean this is our vacation okay free time no it's up to you you think about your choices and decide what you want to do well if we work nights more money than if we hired another painter but if we work nights our social life would take a beating we hire help we'll have enough free time to go to that concert we already bought the tickets what a miserable set of choices we should have planned this thing better we should have budgeted this thing more carefully it's good to learn from your mistakes but what are you gonna do could you recommend a painter for us well I know a good one at a fair price [Music] you made it just in time oh it looks beautiful [Music] thanks Dad okay we did the job all right yeah next time the choice is the best [Music] girls you did a lovely job the place is beautiful I'd like to have my new apartment painted this summer what about it [Music] the content for give and take was developed with funds from a Consortium of 26 State and provincial education agencies other funds were provided by these corporations and Foundations [Music] additional support was provided by the office of consumers education U.S Department of Education [Music] this program was produced by the filmworks or TV Ontario under the supervision of AIT the agency for instructional television kind of a sitcom about uh personal finance and economics and making decisions uh with some characters some real characters uh I I love it um now it's time to learn about iron a product of a blast furnace enjoy [Music] the process of reducing iron ore to our cast iron is called smelting iron ore is smelted in a huge cylindrical Tower called a blast furnace here is a blast furnace and the stoves for heating air used in the furnace compare the size of the furnace with the railroad cars in the foreground a blast furnace operates continuously day and night year after year stopping when it is necessary to replace the brick lining of the Furnace this diagram will help us to understand what happens inside the blast furnace raw materials brought to the top of the Furnace by a skip car are dumped into the furnace in alternate layers a layer of iron ore a layer of Coke a layer of limestone and so on three large brick line stoves on the right are used to heat air which is blown into the furnace at the bottom around the base of the furnace is a huge pipe called the bustle pipe which carries hot air from the stoves to the base of the Furnace hot air is blown into the furnace through nozzles or blowpipes this blast of hot air makes the coke burn at high temperatures forming carbon monoxide this superheated gas Rises through the blast furnace charge separating oxygen from the iron ore high temperatures melt the iron which collects at the bottom of the Furnace the Limestone also melts and combines with impurities in the ore forming slag which floats on the top of the molten iron most important raw material used in the blast furnace is iron ore brought to the furnace in huge quantities by boat or rail car here cars containing iron ore are arriving at the raw materials yard they cause great amounts of ore and other materials are handled each day automatic Machinery is used to unload raw materials and transport them to the blast furnace in this building the ore cars are emptied by turning the entire car upside down in a special dumping machine The Ore falls out of the rail cars into Hoppers and then to underground conveyor belt on the conveyor belt The Ore is carried to a giant crushing machine which crushes large chunks of ore to a uniform size The Ore is stacked in neat triangular shaped piles by this huge traveling stacking machine the main purpose of the neat stacking is not for the sake of appearance but to thoroughly blend The Ore to make it all of uniform grade blast furnaces maintain large stockpiles of ore so the flow of ore to the furnace is never interrupted from another stockpile of ore our reclaiming machine takes ore off the bottom of the pile for immediate use in the blast furnace a large triangular rake moves slowly back and forth across the stockpile cutting into the ore heavy steel blades push the ore onto another moving conveyor belt which delivers the crushed and Blended ore direct to storage Hoppers near the blast furnace second most important material used in the blast furnace is Coke made by baking coal enclosed ovens bituminous or soft coal is brought to the Coke Ovens in huge quantities rail cars loaded with coal are brought to this unloading Hopper when the car is directly above the hopper Workman release doors in the bottom of the cars spilling the coal onto an underground conveyor belt Again by rapidly moving conveyor belt the coal is moved to stockpiles for future use large stockpiles of coal must be maintained to ensure a continuous supply of coke for the blast furnace from one of several stockpiles coal is loaded onto another conveyor belt which will carry it to Coal crushing machinery when the coal goes into Coke Ovens it must be of uniform and small size efficient and economical handling of such huge quantities of raw materials is made possible by the use of conveyor belts a large traveling Hopper known as a Larry car delivers the crushed and screened coal to a rectangular Coke oven through openings in the top of the oven when the oven is full it is sealed except for collector pipes which carry byproduct gases and other matter to the byproduct plant besides producing Coke for the blast furnace the coke ovens produce many valuable byproducts after heating at high temperatures for about 18 hours the fiery Coke is pushed out of one end of the coal government and falls into a special hot car within the coke oven the coke is sealed airtight and does not burn but as soon as it is pushed out of the coke oven and makes contact with oxygen in the air it bursts into Flame to keep it from burning itself out the coke must be cooled by spraying it with water this operation is called quenching here the hot car containing burning Coke is entering the quenching Tower where four to six thousand gallons of water will be dropped on the hot Coke to cool it when the water touches the hot Coke some of it is changed to steam which Rises to the top of the quenching Tower then the steaming coke car moves back and dumps its load of quenched coke onto a Coke warp along the track continuous conveyor belts are again used to carry Coke to storage piles near the blast furnace third most important material used in the blast furnace is limestone usually obtained from surface quarries and brought to the blast furnace by ship or rail car here crushed limestone is arriving at the raw material yard of the blast furnace the limestone is sprayed with water to settle dust and dumped in the same way as the iron ore was dumped onto a conveyor belt which carries it rapidly to large storage piles these special scale cars weigh out the correct amount of each raw material according to an accurate scale built into the cars by exact analysis and accurate weighing of the raw materials the operator of a blast furnace can produce pig iron exactly as required for making steel after weighing raw material is dumped into a skip car which carries it to the top of the blast furnace air a full car is going up and an empty car is going down the raw materials are not mixed until they reach the inside of the blast furnace every five or six hours the blast furnace is cast to remove the molten iron and slag the workmen who opened the cast holes wear heavy fireproof clothing to protect themselves when the furnace is cast about 250 tons of liquid iron flow from the great furnace but for each ton of iron that comes out of the furnace one and one half tons of iron ore one ton of coke one half ton of limestone and three and one-half tons of air went into the fiery furnace here molten iron Flows In A seemingly endless stream directly into special hot metal cars called torpedo Ladle cars one of these cars can carry about one half of the molten iron removed from the furnace at each five hour casting when the casting of the furnace is completed a large mud gun seals the cast hole until time to cast the furnace again this mud gun is controlled by Motors so that no Workman needs to get near the Flaming molten iron now the torpedo label car fully loaded with hot molten iron is ready to leave the blast furnace and travel to the nearby Open Hearth furnaces very little of the molten iron is cast into pigs which giveth the name pig iron most of it goes directly into the making of steel in Open Hearth furnaces thus iron ore Coke and Limestone put into the blast furnace in solid form have been transformed by the magic of modern industry into a liquid metal of nearly pure iron which will next be made into Steel a metal more important in our modern civilization than any other material oh yeah well now it's time to see how they make coffee from Brazil to you foreign the universal beverage originating in the old world has achieved its greatest development in the new it has grown in most of the countries of Central and South America and Brazil is the greatest producer the principal coffee growing states are Sao Paulo ministerias Rio de Janeiro and Parana [Music] let us start on a visit to a Brazilian coffee for Zender and there observe the process that must be followed in bringing coffee from Plantation to consumer we enter at the Great Coffee Park of Santos then proceed Inland by rail to the progressive city of Sao Paulo and continue our journey Westward to Brazil's great coffee growing area the central Mountain plateau here are huge Estates containing millions of trees are devoted to Coffee groin it takes many years and a great deal of pins taking work to produce a plantation like this or when a new Plantation is developed the area selected first must be cleared of trees and underbrush presentation workers the underbrush doll and the treason brush are permitted to dry and the area is finally cleared by burning [Music] Brazilian coffee grows best in the reddish clay soil known as Terra Rocha foreign coffee has grown from seed planted in red shaded Nursery the seeds for planting are chosen from specially selected coffee trees seven or eight years old [Music] planted in beds about three inches apart and two inches deep germinate in about eight weeks when the plants reach a height of eight inches they are transplanted to a new bed six months they are again transplanted into loose baskets and at 18 months the plants are ready for permanent planting coffee plantations are usually laid out with trees planted 10 feet apart in each Direction resulting in approximately 450 trees to the acre the 18 months old tree basket included is planted in a hole about two feet deep after the hole has been filled a ditch is dug around the new Coffee Tree to retain the water needed by the young plant after several months the new coffee tree has become rugged and strong after three years a few berries may appear but full production is not achieved until the 5th or sixth year the leaves on the trees are always green slightly waxy and from four to five inches long the plantation develops cleaning up around the trees is essential for many enemy plants tend to choke out the coffee if it is not properly weeded in time also fertilizer must be added to replenish the supply of food the coffee tree exacts from the soil the coffee tree is blossomed during August September and October the white flowers cling closely to the stems of the trees turning the plantation into a sea of white and here is a fully developed Coffee Tree ready to yield its products the berries of a Coffee Tree are first green then yellow then red somewhat resembling ripe cherries in stripping a tree of its berries a piece of canvas is placed on the ground to catch the berries as they fall white oven leaves and branches drop in with the berries on the canvas most of these are picked off by hand foreign the balance are eliminated by a quick toss and the Picker has only the clean berries left in her sieve during the day hundreds of these bags are filled with coffee berries good coffee Pickers can average two to five hundred pounds of coffee a day each tree bearing approximately two pounds of coffee annually a coffee tree produces full crops up to its 15th or 20th year foreign s loaded with bags of freshly picked coffee arrive at the large storage tanks near the plantation headquarters where they pause to allow the workers to unload their burden of brownish red berries bag after bag is dumped into a huge tank which is slowly filled with water when the tank is full the berries are floated to the nearby washing tanks by means of an intricate system of small canal [Applause] foreign entering these large washing tanks coffee berries are agitated this agitation prevents the berries from being affected by the hot sun if exposed for any length of time after the berries have been allowed to soak for a sufficient period they are sluthed to the rotary washer where they undergo a vigorous washing process this process removes grit than other foreign substances from the outer cover of the Coffee Bean then the coffee berries are sluthed to waiting buckets it is now ready for drying the washed berries are set out to dry on a large concrete platform called the Terrell [Music] this is also a long process requiring about three weeks of dry weather oh during this period the coffee berries must be turned at regular intervals to avoid too long an exposure to the heat of the Sun during this sun drying period great cure is taken to protect the coffee berries from dampness and possible rain they are raked into piles at the end of each day each morning there again spread out in the sun and turned over periodically by the workers once this drying process has been completed the Coffee Bean is ready to be separated from its outer protective coverage most plantations in Brazil maintain their own hulling and processing plants this machine is designed for hauling the coffee Berry being a specially used remove the outer coverings which have been around the bean up to this time after the coffee beans are hauled they are grated by size in this automatic sizing machine taking action causes the different sized beans magically to find their proper compartments even in this day of modern machinery a further inspection of the coffee by keynote girls is made then each bag is weighed and sent to the plantation warehouse for storage until ordered for shipment to Santos [Music] [Applause] on receipt of shipping orders the coffee is loaded into trucks for transportation to nearby railroads where it is dispatched to Santos the coffee shipping Port of Brazil on route to Santos let us stop and visit Sao Paulo the Sao Paulo are almost synonymous terms while the growth of the city is due largely to the expansion of the coffee industry Modern Skyscrapers adopt The Horizon of this Metropolis of South America [Music] the municipal opera house is one of the most magnificent buildings of Sao Paulo the famous iparanga Museum once the home of the Emperors of Brazil a city of many beautiful tropical parks home of the South Paulo coffee Institute [Music] Santos the greatest coffee shipping part of the world through which passed more than one and one half billion pounds of coffee every year modern conducts with space for 50 ocean liners to carry the coffee of Brazil to all parts of the world the Santos coffee exchange is the heart of the business life of the greatest coffee exporting city in the world foreign streets crowded with coffee brokers who sell their car into the grading department where experts examine the green coffee first by its fragrance then by its appearance and also by the number of imperfections found in the sample pouring the coffee beans into sieves is the method used for determining the various size beans small lots of the coffee are then roasted and each sample is tasted to determine its flavor characteristics exactly foreign from the interior the coffee is taken to the huge warehouses on the docks and put into new bags especially designed for export purposes truckload after truckload of coffee Finds Its way through the busy streets to the docks and waiting ships yeah the United States is the largest consumer of Brazilian coffee but great quantities are also shipped to Europe and other parts of the world the signal for departure given the ship leaves port at Sea Special Care is taken to ventilate the holes where the bags of coffee are stored the temperature always averages 80 degrees on arrival in New York no time is lost in unloading the cargo of coffee after the government permit to land and deliver is in the hands of a customs inspector in the dock as the bags come up out of the hole the foreman directs the laborers to place them on the dock section chalked off for each Consignment the coffee again is sampled on arrival in New York the Importer takes samples of several bags of the new shipment the new shipment of coffee is transferred to the roasting planet where automatic Machinery lifts the bags to the large storage room before roasting coffees of different types are Blended to produce exactly the flavor desired different brands of course use different blends automatic Machinery mixes the coffees together thoroughly now the coffee is released to the roasting cylinders wherein this most modern of coffee plants the time and degree of roast is automatically controlled to ensure absolute uniformity properly roasted the coffee is discharged into cooling pans where the coffee is constantly stirred allowing it to cool before releasing it to be packaged by means of automatic weighing packaging and sealing Machinery coffee is placed in bags still in the bean so that all its freshness is retained to be delivered to the consumer thousands upon thousands of bags of coffee are packaged and shipped from this roasting plant to meet the demand for coffee by millions of people every day coffee is one of the principal products of the Americas a delightful beverage enjoyed by millions the world over coffee truly a gift of the Americas to the world this educational picture is presented by the Pan American Union the international organization of the 21 American republics where additional films or information regarding the republics of the American continent right to the Pan-American Union Washington D.C thank you wow yeah people commented that the music was so like it's intense and I was like oh my God oh my God um somebody got me some chocolate covered espresso beans so that might be also contributing to the sanity um really amazing uh and of course with climate change there's so many parts to that process that are now compromised or are different or have to change uh I'm concerned that coffee is going to come become very expensive in the next five years ten years because of that and um I might have to go with the Folgers crystals um it might be something where we have to recycle our grinds and come up with a Rejuvenation process that extracts that kind of fracks out more coffee uh all right um so some things let's see uh uh I have been working with somebody who's been pulling thumbs for my
