think it did very well um so hi I'm skip alimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where I am going through a box uh basically what happened was this was on a core and it popped off so now this is is the worst and I have two examples of it we're going through uh a bunch of uh odds and ends that have been not looked at for many years and so this is what this is uh and we just showed a bunch of uh 16 mm TV trailers that we transferred or scanned on Friday but they were upside down and backwards so I said that I would fix them and uh I did uh you notice the color is all over the place on it um I tried to correct each uh trailer but there's also something called color breathing where you see like there's a weird color thing happening over here which is very different than what's happening over here and unfortunately there's not an easy way to fix that I'm still looking because I have a lot of things that suffer from that but anyways um so where did my mouse go it just fell off the dek ask where is it it's way down there hold on let's pop right out that's not going to work all right I can't really do the show without having my house it just popped off the desk and fell into a bunch of uh cables cables and um gnarled films uh it's time to get out your democracy uh desk ISM uh chart James burough will step you through what you need to do to readjust it you can roughly locate any community in the world somewhere along a scale running all the way from democracy to despotism one community may be near the Democracy end another somewhere in the middle and a third may be near the despotism end let's find out about despotism this man makes it his job to study these things well for one thing avoid the comfortable idea that the mere form of government can of itself Safeguard a nation against despotism Germany under President Hindenberg was a republic and yet in this Republic an aggressive despotism took root and flourished under Adolf Hitler when a competent observer looks for signs of despotism in a community he looks beyond fine words and Noble phrases for which it stands one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all many observers have found that two workable yard sticks help in discovering how near a community is to despotism the respect scale and the power scale a careful Observer can use a respect scale to find how many citizens get an even break as a community moves towards despotism respect is restricted to fewer people a community is low on a respect scale if common courtesy is withheld from large groups of people on account of their political attitudes if people are rude to others because they think their wealth and position gives them that right or because they don't like a man's race or his religion equal opportunity for all citizens to develop useful skills is one basis for rating a community on a respect scale the opportunity to develop useful skills is important but not enough the equally important opportunity to put skills to use is a further test on a respect scale a power scale is another important yard stick of despotism it gauges the citizen share in making the community's decisions communities which concentrate decision making in a few hands rate low on a power scale and are moving towards despotism like France under the bourbon Kings one of whom said the state I am the state today democracy can e away in communities whose citizens allow power to become concentrated in the hands of bosses what I say go see I'm the law around here the test of despotic power is that it can disregard the will of the people it rules without the consent of the governed look beyond the legal formalities of an election in measuring a community on the power scale to see if the ballot is really free if the citizens can vote only the way they're told a community approaches despotism when legislator become ceremonial assemblies only and have no real control over lawmaking their Community rates low on a a power [Music] scale in a downright despotism opposition is dangerous whether the despotism is official or whether it is unofficial the spread of respect and Power in a community is influenced by certain conditions which many observers measure by means of the economic distribution and information scales if a community's economic distribution becomes slanted its middle income groups grow smaller and despotism stands a better chance to gain a foothold where land is privately owned one sign of a poorly balanced economy is the concentration of land ownership in the hands of a very small number of people when Farmers lose their Farms they lose their independence this one can stay on but not as his own boss anymore to the extent that this condition exists throughout a nation the likelihood of despotism is increased in communities which depend almost entirely on a single industry such as a factory or mine maintaining economic balance is a challenging problem if this condition exists over the nation as a whole so that the control of jobs and business opportunities is in a few hands despotism stands a good chance another sign of a poorly balanced economy is a taxation system that presses heaviest on those least able to pay a larger part of a small income is spent on Necessities such as food sales taxes on such Necessities hit the small income harder in the days of the salt tax fudal despotisms were partly sustained by this and other forms of sales tax a community rates low on an information scale ale when the Press radio and other channels of communication are controlled by only a few people and when citizens have to accept what they're told in communities of this kind despotism stands a good chance see how such a community trains its teachers bear this in mind young people cannot be trusted to form their own opinions this business about open-mindedness is nonsense it's a waste of time trying to teach students who think for themselves it's our job to tell them and when teachers put such training into practice despotism stands a good chance these children are being taught to accept uncritically whatever they're told questions are not encouraged how can you ask such a question have you got a textbook yes ma'am doesn't it say here that our all courts are always just yes ma'am then how dare you question the fact sit down and so we aren't surprised when but it must be true I saw it in this book right here and if books and newspapers and the radio are efficiently controlled the people will read and accept exactly what the few in control want them to government censorship is one form of control a newspaper which breaks a government censorship rule can be suspended it is also possible for newspapers and other forms of communication to be controlled by private interests I thought I told you to kill that story it'll cost us a lot of ad if that story goes out I quit all right what sort of community do you live in where would you place it on a democracy despotism scale to find out you can rate it on a respect scale and a power scale and to find out what way it is likely to go in the future you can rate it on economic distribution and information scales the lower your community rates on economic distribution and information scales the lower it is likely to rate on respect and power scales and thus to approach despotism what happens in a single Community is the problem of its own citizens but if is also the problem of us all because as communities go so goes the nation what happened where am I in the dark even though James Brill spelled it out 80 years ago James Brill love that guy uh there's a reason I bury my head in uh films from our past uh that's all I'm going to say uh phosphorus phosphorus [Music] the element phosphorus is an interesting example of an element that forms two allotropic forms the two Vari IES which commonly occur are known as white phosphorus and red phosphorus white phosphorus is in the tube on the right it's the form that is prepared by the condensation of phosphorus vapor and when freshly prepared is white however this form of the element is metastable and slowly turns to the red form even at room temperature for this reason the piece of phosphorus in the tube has a yellowish appearance due to a small surface coating of the red variety red phosphorus occurs in the tube on the left it's the stable form at room temperature these two uh forms of phosphorus also exhibit several remarkably different kinds of behavior the white form as we'll soon see bursts into flame in air whereas the red form is quite stable and less heated because of this tendency of the white form to burst into flame it must be stored underwater and that is the reason for the liquid in the tube on the right we can compare the activity of red phosphorus and white phosphorus by exposing samples of them to the air on the watch glass on the left I've placed a small sample of red phosphor the watch glass on the right has been warmed very slightly and on that watch glass I'll now place the sample of white phosphorus you can see that the white phosphorus almost immediately bursts into flame and burns with the production of large clouds of phosphorus pentoxide where under virtually identical conditions the red phosphorus does not react with the oxygen in the air at any appreciable rate since phosphorus is a non-metal its oxide formed during the combustion should react with water to produce acid some of the phosphorus pentoxide will have remained on the watch glass and I'll now add a few drops of water to the residue on the glass now I'll add a few drops of mesal red indicator you'll recall that this indicator assumes its red color in acid solution the appearance of the bright red color uh confirms our our prediction the phosphorus pent oxide will react with water to form an acid solution red phosphorus like white will burn in air if it's raised to a somewhat higher temperature on the watch glass we have a few small pieces of red phosphorus I will now light these with the flame of the bunson burner you can see that the phosphorus ignites easily and that the red phosphorus Burns producing the same clouds of white smoke we observed with the white phosphorus and the product of the reaction is the same phosphorus pentoxide we'll permit the red phosphorus uh to burn until virtually all of it has been used up and then test the residue with water and methal red as we did before the red fos has now burned itself out and the watch glass has been permitted to cool we'll add a few drops of water and some methyl red indicator as before and again the bright red color of the indicator tells us that the solution is acid it is acid because the p25 phosphorus pentoxide formed when the red phosphorus burned has reacted with the water to form phosphoric acid white phosphorus reacts rather rapidly with most of the halogens we can illustrate this reaction by putting a small piece of white phosphorus on the watch glass and to it adding some crystals of iodine the heat of the reaction causes the phosphorus to burst into Flame the product of the reaction is phosphorus triiodide and the balance of the phosphorus is now simply burning forming phosphorus pentoxide we observed that when a piece of white phosphorus was placed on the watch glass it almost immediately burst into flame and produced large clouds of white smoke the reaction involved was between phosphorus and oxygen yielding the phosphorus pentoxide a white powder which caused the smoke we then added some water to the residue on the watch glass and tested with an indicator when the oxides of phosphorus like p25 react with water the initial product is metaphosphoric acid and this then may react with an additional molecule of water to yield orthop phosphoric acid and both of these acids ionize yielding hydrogen ions which we detected with the indicator the reactions we observed with red phosphorus were enti ly similar the phosphorus in this equation then may be either white or red the equation is the same producing p25 and then of course the subsequent equations are the same also when we treated a small piece of phosphorus with crystals of iodine we found that a rapid reaction took place with the production of phosphorus triodine when phosphorus reacts with an active metal such as calcium a compound called calcium phosphide is formed this material also results from the reduction of calcium phosphate calcium phosphide CA 2p3 reacts with slightly acidified water to produce mostly phosphine ph3 and Trace impurities of another hydride phosphorous P2 H4 when these compounds come in contact with the air the P2 H 4 ignite spontaneously setting off the phosphine so that little puffs of flame result I'll now Place several lumps of calcium phosphide in the water in the beaker so that you may observe this reaction down here the calcium phosphide is reacting with water forming bubbles of phosphine these rise to the surface and ignite here giving PFF flame and producing fumes of phosphorus pentoxide some water is formed also we saw that when we reacted small lumps of calcium phosphide C3 P2 with water reaction took place rapidly with the production of calcium hydroxide and phosphate the gas with which bubble from the reaction mixture a phosphine may contain traces of other halides of phosphorus which ignite spontaneously and then set off the phosphine but in any case at the surface of the water in the reaction vessel when the phosphine encounters the oxygen in the air it does burn with the production of phosphorus pentoxide and water as shown by this equation we turn now to a consideration of some reactions of the phosphate ion in each of the two test tubes I've placed several milliliters of a solution of sodium phosphate and to each tube I'll add a few drops of silver nitrate solution the yellow precipitate is silver phosphate now we've seen before that we can dissolve a precipitate if we can cause the product of the concentrations of its ions raised to the appropriate power to fall below the solubility product constant for this precipitate in the case of silver phosphate we can lower the concentration of either the phosphate ion or of the silver ion to the tube on the left I'll add some dilute nitric acid you can see that this precipitate rapidly dissolves now the dilute nitric acid reacts with the phosphate ion converting it to phosphoric acid and so reducing the concentration of the phosphate ion that the solubility product conditions are not meant to the tube on the right I'll add some concentrated ammonium hydroxide and once again the precipitate dissolv the ammonium hydroxide reacts with a silver ion forming the silver ammonia complex ion and reducing the concentration of the silver ion so in this case by reducing the concentration of the phosphate ion we've caused the precipitate to dissolve and in this case by reducing the concentration of the silver ion we've caused the precipitate to dissolve when we mix Solutions of silver nitrate and sodium phosphate we obtain a precipitate of silver phosphate this precipitate must have been obtained because the product of the concentration of the silver ion cubed times the phosphate ion concentration exceeded the solubility product constant for silver phosphate we then divided this precipitate into two sections and treated one section with acid we observed that the precipitate dissolved nitric acid was used as a source of the hydrogen ion now when the precipitate dissolved it must have done so because the silver ion concentration Cube times the phosphate ion became less than the solubility product constant now in the case of the acidification of silver phosphate precipitates we were operating on the small quantity of phosphate ion in equilibrium with the precipitate when we added acid this phosphate ion was converted to the hydrogen phosphate ion and in the presence of additional acid would go to the dihydrogen phosphate ion and eventually to phosphoric acid in any case however the phosphate ion concentration is greatly reduced this term becomes very small and this product this quantity times this quantity with this very small is less than the solubility product constant and the precipitate dissolved now when we added ammonia to Solutions or suspensions of silver phosphate we're operating on the silver ion in equilibrium with this precipitate the silver ion reacts with two molecules of ammonia to produce the silver ammonia complex ion this lowers concentration of the silver ion making this term very small and once again the product of these two terms is smaller than the solubility product constant so the precipitate dissolve a common test for the phosphate ion involves its reaction with Solutions of ammonium mdate in the presence of nitric acid in the test tube we have a few milliliters of a solution of sodium phosphate to this solution I'll add a small quantity of ammonium mdate solution and we'll then make the mixture acid with nitric acid the yellow precipitate which forms in the tube is ammonium phosph mdate the formation of this precipitate with its characteristic yellow color serves as a good test for the presence of the phosphate ion we'll now utilize the test we've just developed to study the reaction between red phosphorus and nitric acid I have a small quantity of red phosphorus in this uh brown bottle I'll place a gram or so of this material in the beaker we'll now add some dilute nitric acid to the beaker also we'll then place the bunson burner under the setup and boil the mixture for several minutes after several minutes of boiling the reaction mixture has been permitted to cool somewhat and we will now filter to remove excess phosphorus to the filtrate from the reaction between the red phosphorus and the nitric acid We'll add a few milliliters of ammonium mdate and then some additional concentrated nitric acid the appearance of the yellow precipitate of ammonium phosph mdate confirms our suspicion that the red phosphorus has been oxidized to the phosphate ion or the phosphoric acid by the action of the nitric acid we developed a test for the presence of the phosphate ion by treating a solution containing the phosphate Ion with an excess of nitric acid and a solution of ammonium mdate containing the mdate ion M4 minus now we obtained a yellow precipitate and this precipitate may have a rather variable composition but one author at least represents it as the ammonium taken three times four hydrogens phosphorus attached to six m207 groups this is called ammonium phosphate the other of the reaction is water and this material precipitates is yellow and serves as an identification of the phosphate ion we then reacted red phosphorus with delute nitric acid we found that the equation can be balanced by the half reaction method with the phosphorus being oxidized to the phosphate Ion four waters are required eight hydrogens and five electrons needed for balancing the nitrate ion in dilute concentration is reduced to nitric oxide three electrons are required for balancing so this equation must be multiplied by three and this by five for electrical balance and adding the two partials up we obtain uh three phosphorus atoms two molecules of water from the 12 Waters that entered in this partial and the 10 molecules of water produced in this partial leaving a net of two here and five nitrate ions producing three phosphate ions and four hydrogen from the 24 hydrogens in the top partial and the 20 hydrogen in the bottom and that of four on the right and five molecules of nitric oxide we then added ammonium mdate and excess nitric acid and tested for the phosphate ions here in the same manner uh that we did previously and again obtained uh the yellow precipitate having this [Music] composition they have that glorious Fan Fair at the end to wake everybody up I mean you had me with the explosions the with the flames and all that stuff but yeah at some point I was like um thank you University of akan for that um I have a whole series of those I got more plenty more we've seen some um so behind me I have a film wrong way I have a scanner hooked up and it keeps bouncing around there's so I've got like below me a bunch of boxes of um film reels of odds and ends that I'm slowly going through and hey look I I was able to get all the this one one one reel um that was the the mess that I had before and the problem is that so you have this core and if the core gets punched or if it if there's a un even wind here it might get punched if you're not careful and then it all falls apart and that's what I was dealing with and I have another one right here that I'm dealing with and it is going to be it a bear it it's going to be a so there you go anyhow um so behind me film scanner uh and this first film it's going to be running at 16 frames a second there's no sound uh but you're okay with that I know uh and this was made by an amateur Cinema Club in Bergen County in amure Cinema clubs were formed thanks to camera shops um as places for local Regional people to get together and hone their craft of film making and from that uh there were some people that elevated themselves to making uh educational films uh kind of on their own a lot of interesting little narratives um so it's people who had home movie equipment that wanted to insired to something bigger and there was an amateur Cinema League that was worldwide organization there was a journal or magazine called Movie Makers which talked about how to make a movie you know how to title it Etc so this one as I said is silent and I think it's called slasher I don't know but this is a compilation of a bunch of things so enjoy e is is is is is all right um so uh I didn't get a year on that um but that was a pretty early slasher film oops see what happens here I'm going to check this next um as this is also silent and could be another let's see [Applause] so is this the same film it is great title though all right let's uh learn about spelling [Music] have you ever watched the sign being changed at a neighborhood theater without correctly spelled words we have no way of knowing what the sign says when the letters are placed in their proper order we can read the words five cartoons today correctly spelled words tell people things they want or need to know and when we spell words correctly we tell others what we want them to know it's so important for us to learn how to be good spellers would you like to you know how we can become better [Music] spellers here are four spelling helpers who I think can lead us or anyone to better spelling the first big helper the look helper tells us that we must look carefully at each word we want to spell another helper is the listen helper he reminds us to listen carefully to the way a word sounds here's the say helper he tells us to say the spelling word to say it out loud carefully this big helper is the right helper who tells us to write every word we want to learn to spell you can see that look and write are are two big helpers now let's say the name of all of our helpers together ready look listen St right all right Jerry suppose you come to the board for a minute Jerry I'd like you to spell the word hit for me now Look at the word now you say the word hit hit now comes the important step write the word that's right let's all listen as I say it again hit the letters H and I together give us the same sound in hit as the H and I in hill and him thank you Jerry there are some words like hit which we can often spell just by listening to them but to spell most words we need our other helpers let me show you what I mean let's all spell the word two just write the word at your desk all right how many spelled this word and how many spelled this word to or this word two you see subwords sound exactly alike but have different meanings and different spellings so listening to a word is only one way to help us spell a word we must always look at the words we want to learn to spell let's try another word the word broke there now that you've listened to the word and looked at it Judy suppose you write it for us no it doesn't look quite right does it you forgot the advice of our third spelling helper what does he tell us to do to say the word all right Judy say the word you've spelled that isn't right it should be broke b r o k e now write the word Judy bir oh yes saying the word helps us remember how the word looks especially words like broke which have a silent letter such as this e where in which the letters just seem to get mixed up are only one kind of word that may give us trouble for example we know that the letters S and H together have the same sound in words like shut or show but there are other words that also have the sound of sh in them such as sh and sugar but we don't spell them with an sh only an S so sounds and words may play tricks on us that's why we need the advice of all our spelling helpers for each word we want to spell but especially we need to follow the advice of look and write and even so there are many words that can still give us trouble for example there are words spelled with silent letters that we don't hear when we say the words the T in the word listen is a silent letter so are the K and E in the word knife when we listen or say the word knife we hear only the letters n i and f the letters K and E are silent to learn to spell words with silent letters we must be be sure to follow the advice of our look helper remember to look at words like knife before you write them in the next few weeks after our lesson on the spelling helpers our class spent much time practicing their spelling one way we practiced was by writing and correcting words after the boys and girls had written the words I would spell the words correctly for them out loud some days we spelled with Partners each pair of Partners would test one another on Words that were giving them trouble after one partner had written his words the other partner spelled the words correctly out loud so that the words could be corrected As Time passed we practiced using our spelling helpers in many ways one way was to practice in teams each team spelled words by adding on to the letters such as o and a these two letters together often have an o sound one team added a b which gave a b sound and then a t for boat a c gave them a CO for coat and then they spelled goat Loaf and soak of course we knew through using our look helper that some words which have an o sound words like whole old Mo though and even this word so which has no o in it have different spellings of this o sound we got more practice with our spelling helpers by making posters for our class Bulletin Board Writing letters and writing stories so we were practicing ways to better spelling and to help us spell we'd follow the good advice of our spelling helpers can you spell their names look listen say write yes we found these helpers led us to better spelling you can be a better speller too I know we're after time but I have I found something on the tail end here was another uh amateur Cinema Club of Bergen County and this one has sound um so let's go ahead and watch this this is uh Ser serenade for a maid let me change this serade for a maid sound all right enjoy [Music] if I were as high as the moon in the sky I would look down on you and say if I were as low as a Mor of snow I would look up at you and say you're the only girl in the world for me and I'll Always Love You tenderly but if I were as high as the moon in the sky I would look down on you and [Music] say and now this revolting picture vocally painted by the entire emble if I were as I had the morning remarkable ain't it if I as as a of I would love you and monotonous you're the only in the world for me and love you T in I down you and everything is PE when you sing like Music Fair music foul music played by Teddy Powell I down on you and oh [Music] [Music] I'll take a fart joke any day thank you thank you everybody uh wow that was phenomenal holy cow uh Bergen County amateur Cinema Club um dumb glorious they know it's dumb but I'm sure they would show it and it would just bring down the house every single time so uh everybody have a great rest of your uh Monday it's July um yeah there you go that's all I can say about July uh it's going to be hot and gross and uh there you go we'll see you tomorrow live Everybody Take Care uh and if you like what you saw hit the thumbs up hit the like button uh give us money via the super thanks button or the ko-fi.com avgeeks button or the patreon.com avgeek button um all that stuff enjoy
