for is hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and that was a home movie fbgs uh this came from the orgon collection so they got it at an estate sale um and yeah visiting California so pretty great footage it's 1948 eight so that's a ways back uh let's learn about elephant uh this one is missing the title but since it has our good friend James Brill narrating we know that it's probably encyclopedia britanica enjoy this elep called Mumbo Bob is pitching hay from mumbo's breakfast she uses her long nose called a trunk to carry the hay to her mouth animal training Farm belonging to Bob's father Mr BR here he comes now with a stranger Bob this is Mr Thompson glad to know you how do you do well she certainly is a nice big animal she certainly is like Mumbo all elephants can hear very well but their eyes sight is not good the a good sense of SM here Mumbo finds the lump of work like fingers at the end of her trunk mumo wants something in Bob's pocket and here it is another piece of mumbo's feet hold up 8,000 lb there are five toes on each front foot and four on each hind foot is a tough of coarse black hair well I like the looks of Mumbo may I see how well she is trained yes sir down Mumbo while Mumbo is showing her skill a truck driver hurries up my truck is off the road do you think you going to help me out I think Mumbo can push you out elephants are strong and Mumbo has learned to use her strength to push or to pull the truck is in the ditch alongside the road it's really in a bad spot now Mr Thompson will see how well Mumbo can push push push Mumbo push out of the ditch out upon the road goes the truck well I'll take the elephant she is so well trained that I want you to train our two young elephants that just came over from India yes that will be all right I'll bring them when I come to take Mumbo today Mumbo has wandered down to the pond she is using her trunk to give herself a shower pad Bob and his father miss her and start searching Mumbo takes a drink she first sucks the water up into her trunk and then blows it into her mouth Mr Bradford spies mumbo's tracks on the path elephants are fond of water in their native homes in the hot jungle they take baths like this every day soon Bob and his father find Mumbo in her favorite bathing Place nothing like a good cool bath on a hot summer day bath time is up Mumbo come here but Mumbo is not in the slightest hurry come here come out at Mr Bradford's second command Mumbo comes slowly out of the water the sharp branches of this tree make a good back scratcher Mumbo is refreshed and ready to return to her place on the animal farm she now uses her toes to scratch herself elephants also take dust baths Mumbo Scoops up the dust with her trunk a coat of dust protects her skin from insects Bob's little sister has no one to play with so Bob brings Mumbo over to stop sisters [Music] crying Mumbo comes dancing over to the play pen as Bob directs her steps little sister isn't satisfied she wants better tricks so here's another now Mumbo sits up just like a trained dog she holds her head and her trunk gracefully well how is this Bob's little sister can have a circus in her own backyard now what's Bob trying to do why he wants to get right up on mumbo's back and she boosts him with her trunk Bob often does this and then he rewards Mumbo with a lump of sugar sister is really interested now the elephant lowers her head to let Bob slide down easily standing on one's head is a difficult trick but Mumbo does it well for an elephant the week has gone by and here comes Mr Thompson the circus man with the new baby elephant here are the two baby elephants you promised to train for me Mr Bradford it's going to be a long hard job as Mr Thompson leads the young elephants to their new quarters Mr Bradford thinks proudly how well Mumbo will perform in the circus this is Bob's first chance to work training baby elephants he is already getting acquainted with the new arrivals sugar is usually a great help but it makes these elephants almost too anxious to be friendly well Goodbye Mr Thompson good luck to you all right and I'll hope you bring Bob sometime to the circus I will so long may I help you train them Dad yes Bob on a morning 3 weeks later the baby elephants are just finishing breakfast the chains are taken off their feet so they can go to practice their new tricks first Bob circles them around into the training ring and the elephants take their places on large heavy tubs this is a part of a new trick front feet up and now the proper way to sit down that's all for this trick the next trick is to learn to walk the plank this is one of the hardest tricks to teach an elephant with his clubbed awkward feet an elephant has to balance carefully when learning to turn around on the plank this one holds on a little with her trunk well done baby elephant the other elephant is learning to do a funny act for the circus first she Rings a dinner bell and Bob brings on a tablecloth away it goes now Bob brings on a plate away it goes too but when he puts bread on the plate well that's different at least until the bread is gone last of all over goes the table someday when she has learned this trick she will do it for hundreds of children wow that was uh Shredded um it tells me that that was a very popular film because the beginning was shredded and uh cut and the end was shredded and cut um I'm sure the kids really enjoyed seeing animals uh elephants being trained um is it worth the pay off you know like I don't know it's it's it's epic to see these giant animals um doing stuff but you know James BR was like he does a pretty good hand headstand for an elephant really mean mean James bril elephants are Beautiful Creatures uh let's uh go to the Mid-Atlantic state enjoy [Music] w [Music] the cities are big and the people are on the Move more than a quarter of the country's population is concentrated in these six Middle Atlantic states the Appalachian Highlands take up a large part of the area east of them is the pedmont and then the low Atlantic Coastal plane rivers that begin in the highlands flow down across the hilly pedmont and Tumble in Falls and Rapids to the plains with water and water power available here industry developed in the 1800s industry attracted immigrants because there were jobs population Commerce industry everything grew [Music] people are the Middle Atlantic State's greatest resource I'm going to college next year or maybe a business school or a technical institute there are lots to choose from around here I live in Brooklyn and I have a part-time job in Manhattan to get down to work I usually take the A train then switch to the AA train then take a bus cross town I ride at 3:00 the trains aren't too crowded then we come up for a little air on the Brooklyn Bridge and then we're in Manhattan [Music] I work in a big department store in the food section I got the job so I could have some spending money and something to do during the summer also I can get discounts here I work inside theore most of the time but the store is great they handle merchandise from everywhere Swedish glasswar and cameras from Japan and bicycles from Chicago and furniture from North Carolina you know even Sports coats from Manhattan and appliances from New Jersey and Pennsylvania yeah it's a good job the most I manufacturing area of the country is here in the Middle Atlantic states my position here is to govern and regulate the manufacturer of all the structures that go into the final assembly of the Royal car division here in Philadelphia we manufacture Railway car equipment Computer Service and Mainline equipment construction of the railroad car starts with the fabrication of parts getting the steel of course is the first step we get stainless steel from Pittsburgh after this piece is punched it gets shaped into a heater guard Grill steel for junctioned boxes from Pittsburgh 2 this wire is from Rhode Island I'd say 10 to 12 months after we get an order we can have cars ready for shipping yes we live here in Philadelphia and I've been employed 39 years in the railway division a Philadelphian goes three or four places for the weekend we like the New Jersey Shore down at the resorts Atlantic City Cony Island well we might take it in if we go to New York but it's too crowded for me too many people but it takes people millions of people to run the great number of Industries in the Middle Atlantic states in New York City thousands of people work in Printing and Publishing about 1/4 of the books published in the United States come from here chemical processing is a major industry in the Middle Atlantic states too paints are part of it so pills these printed circuits will go into television sets an almost endless variety of products comes out of the Middle Atlantic states flash cubes and cameras and photographic equipment marbles and other toys typewriters and Ving machines and all kinds of office equipment many of the products manufactured in the Middle Atlantic states are made of steel steel is one of the Region's most important products a quarter of America steel comes from the Mills of Pittsburgh soft coold is mined near Pittsburgh heated in airtight ovens to burn away impurities then used as a fuel in steel production coal in that form is called Coke coal deposits lie under 2/3 of West Virginia oil deposits in Northwest pennslvania are the basis of a refining industry this molten glass was once a bit of the sandy soil of West Virginia West Virginia's Industries are mainly based on its mineral resources much of the land is not suited for Farming Farming is better in the Atlantic Coastal plane where the ground is more level and less Rocky I've been growing tomatoes here in New Jersey oh about 50 years we grow tomatoes eggplants Peppers asparagus corn that is the horse corn we used to grow sweet potatoes but don't anymore squash we've earned a living on farming don't make too much money but you make a living at it the future of farming I think it's going to go out my land's more valuable because of all the industry coming out here but we don't want to sell it we'd like to keep it as a farm as long as the wholesale Market wants our produce we'll stay in farming many agricultural products of the Middle Atlantic states are sold to food processing plants in cities like Trenton New Jersey processed food and manufactured goods are shipped to all parts of the world from coastal cities of the Middle Atlantic states these cities are gateways for goods going out of the country and coming into it River routes and rail routs sea routs and land routs they all interweave in the Middle Atlantic states the Lincoln Tunnel takes traffic under the Hudson River from we hawk in New Jersey into Midtown New York I live in East Orange New Jersey 17 M away public transportation's a little difficult for me I have to drive in every day in September it will be 11 years that I've been doing this work most of the trucks are coming in to make deliveries but some are coming through to the New England states quite a few of our patrons are familiar even the passenger cars I know quite a few of the bus drivers by name because they're pretty friendly guys have I seen figures on how much traffic goes through in one day I really haven't but after a day of thank you and good morning and so forth I don't care for one collector at the time she's working it seems like a million the Middle Atlantic states are knit together by a system of interstate highways that connect major cities like New York and Philadelphia and Washington DC and within or near these cities there are Rail Yards that connect the region with the rest of the country trains we take them apart and put them together here I work here in the Philadelphia rail yard and I'm keeping track of a train we're putting together for Chicago this is a hopper car a hopper cars carry West Virginia coal sand loads you can dump tank cars for liquids like Pennsylvania oil and gasoline couldn't switch without the switchman what's going out you name it we've got it vegetables from New Jersey generators from sken chemicals from Delaware Electronics equipment from here in Philadelphia and empty cars [Music] too Carmen connect all the airbrake lines between the cars and when the flagman hangs up the markers on the Caboose we've officially got a train [Music] people and goods on the move this is the basis of life in the urban complexes that make up the Middle Atlantic states movement speed contact with the rest of the country and the rest of the world this is Kennedy International Airport in New York [Music] Bridges and tunnels connect cities and states over 200 miles of subways run beneath New York City many ions of people use Subways and surface lines to commute to jobs trains buses taxis tunnels fairies Bridges turnpikes they keep things moving and keep the vast Urban complexes of the Middle Atlantic states alive the rural landscape changes as the expanding cities and suburbs eat up the countryside Suburban life is becoming more urban as offices and shopping centers move move out of the cities to the suburbs the cities still have their problems and their big problems because they're big [Music] cities I live in the Monroe project living here is all right but it's starting to get like a slum the city's building more places for us to play in and that's good with nothing to do kids just hang around and make trouble congestion pollution unemployment slums some of the problems some answers better mass transportation low-income housing room for recreation clean air to breathe urban planners are busy trying to make Urban concentration work for the fifth million people of the Middle Atlantic states [Music] pretty great um interesting Slice of Life uh from the uh' 70s very much like that all right this next film uh has a booklet and so it's called probable man and it's on the uh scanner back here and I was like ooh probable man and it's made by uh Davidson films who made weird number which I personally love um but this could go either way like some of the Davidson math films are not very good and so we're just going to see what happens so here's probable man enjoy [Music] [Music] as our story opens Lester nowin a part-time news reporter on a local radio station is on his way to cover a veloping news story hurry up Lester we'll be late to the dog show Lester had always wanted a very important person but fate had held him back and Lester thought no one looked up to him particularly his secretary Miss givings Lester stop fooling around we'll miss the poodle parade at the dog show coming Miss givings let's get a taxi Lester okay Miss givings one taxi oh boy those curbs are getting high H what what's this gosh it looks like a magic lamp from a fairy tale with a genie inside who grants wishes boy I I I know what my wish would be I'd want to be someone important so people would look up to me so miss givings would look up to me y who who are you I'm From Another World the magic lamp brings me from there to here then you must be the genie of the lamp Genie no actually my name is Johnny well jeie Johnny whatever your name is are you here to grant me any wish I desire hardly I don't have unlimited Powers however I do have some Powers which are not available in this world we might be able to work something out what seems to be the trouble nobody looks up to me I want to be important I want to be a a news maker not just a reporter well let's see what I can do now how about this it'll make you the life of the party no I I said news maker not not noise maker can I interest you in this monogram pen and pencil set no no no I I want to be a superhero don't and Shout at me I'm I'm sorry very well here's a little item it is an amulet which will give you superpowers but it has its drawbacks drawbacks what kind of drawbacks let me explain this amulet receives super energy from my world I just happen to have an extra one you decide what you want to become then you rub the amulet and it will probably change you into whatever you want but only for about 10 minutes but do you mean probably well my world has two types of super Energy red energy and blue energy the blue energy works just the way you want it to but the red is rather unpredictable for instance suppose I say make this apple into an apple pie and then I rubbed The Amulet wow that worked the way I wanted it to so the amulet must have received blue energy on the other hand if the amulet were receiving Red Energy there's no telling what might happen let's try it and see if it receives red or blue energy this time make this apple pie into an apple again there you see it receives Red Energy luckily in 10 minutes the energy will wear off and the parrot will become an apple again so you're you're never really sure what will happen well yes and no we can set the amulet so that it will receive one type of energy for a certain part of the time for instance I'll set your amulet so that half the time you'll get blue energy and half the time red unfortunately you never know which type of energy you'll get until you rub the amulet then I'll never be sure what will happen true but you can be sure of this about half the number of times you use the amulet it will probably glow blue we call that a probability of one half of getting blue well Lester I got to be going good luck Lester come on we're late coming [Music] misgivings sure are lots of different dogs here Lester look that big Siberian buah Hound is threatening that little toy timian but oh dear Miss givings could get hurt I'd better try and help her please make me a superhero why it's blue I'm a superhero I'm probable man there now there's nothing to fear oh thank you what a story I've got for Lester but where is Lester I'm Lester what you're Lester yes you see when I fell down that manhole I met a genie who gave me an amulet now I can become super but not all of the time why not the amulet only works right about half the time and the effect only lasts for 10 minutes in fact Arya should be changing back to Lester about now I only have a probability of one half of becoming super so I call myself man and so Lester had become a superhero or at least a part-time one or just as Johnny had said on about half the occasions he used the amulet it turned blue the other half had glowed red [Music] and and so this evening everyone is wondering about the mysterious probable man who seems to answer calls for help only about half the occasions he has called is there some limit to probable Man's power a limit no one knows about until tomorrow this is pro I mean this is Lester noan saying good night oh Lester if only the whole world knew that you were probable man sh no one must learn my secret identity but Lester I want everyone to know I want you to be famous but misgivings I never know what's going to happen when I rub that amulet it's better if I just show up as probable man when I can I don't believe all that stuff about probability of one half I think you're just lazy listen I'm going to call for help tomorrow at noon and you'd better be there oh and so miss givings trying to make Lester a popular hero announced to the world that she was going to jump off a high building at 12:00 noon and that probable man would save her y she's going to jump please make me super help baby thank good but but where is Lester it's me the bed I'm Lester oh Lester if only you could be like other Super Heroes you could have your own comic book maybe even a Saturday morning television series you'd be famous but what can I do I only become probable man with probability one half well I'll tell you this Lester noan either you do something about it or you can forget about ever seeing me again oh what a mess maybe I can find Johnny I see the lamp I hope Johnny's still here well hello Johnny I'm in a mess misgivings won't talk to me because I'm only a halftime superhero she wants me to be famous like the other superheroes so I I'm asking you to change the amulet for me I can't do that and besides it's impossible for an amulet to have only blue energy but I can reset the amulet for you okay Lester here is how the reset amulet will work now for only one tenth of the time you'll get blue energy and for the other 9/10 you'll get red but but that will only give me a probability of one tenth for becoming super but I'm worse off than before well I Never Promised You everything would be good I never thought you'd use your powers for personal glory and so with only probability of one1 for Success probable man was seen much less than before what has become of probable man a study of the record shows that he is answering only about one tenth of the calls for his help well until tomorrow this is Lester noan saying good night Miss givings no matter what you or anybody thinks I'm going to give up trying to be famous I'm just going to help people whenever I can and what's more I don't care if anybody ever hears a probable man again so [Music] there well Lester what now I just wanted to tell you I don't care about being famous anymore whatever little help I do get from The Amulet I'm going to use to help people and even if I do turn into those crazy things 9/10 of the time I'll still do all the good I can that's great I knew you'd see the light and as a reward for your new attitude I readjust your amulet one more time now your amulet will receive blue energy about four hits at the time why why that means I'll probably become probable Man four out of five times or eight out of 10 times times gee Johnny thanks for everything Goodbye song Johnny and so Lester became one of the hardworking superheroes who toil selflessly for justice truth and just plain goodness while keeping his true identity a secret and so probable man and saved the ship from sinking this is Lester noan saying good night of course every now and then after all probability 4 fifths doesn't mean every time you know yeah so the two voices uh the narrator is that Mitch Rose sounded really familiar no not that guy English footballer um I'm trying to look on uh the internet Mitch Rose yeah I don't think this is the same one nope who knows anyways um I think that uh Sesame Street and Electric Company allowed for this film to be made um this was not as bad bad as many of them that I've run across it's still too long way too long but um compare this to weird number weird number is all is my favorite it is also too long but it's just it is a very strange um strange thing all right so what do we got uh crust we're left with crust this is about uh sandwiches or is it and that it is constantly changing most of the changes occur so slowly that they cannot be seen in a man's lifetime yet we can read the story of these changes in the rocks that form the Earth's crust we can learn how land masses are pushed up from the floor of the sea how a plane becomes a mountain range and how the Earth is worn away this is a story of our changing Earth the surface of the Earth is billions of years old it was not always solid as we think of it today it is believed that the Earth was hot molten rock when it was first formed gradually over a long period of time the surface of the Earth began to cool and Harden if we could cut the Earth in half we could see how in time the crust formed a very thin layer around the earth like a coat of paint over a ball with the passing of many thousands of years the cooling crust began to shrink wrinkles were formed on its surface wrinkles that became mountains Hills and Valleys as the crust continued to cool Steam and other gases escaped through cracks and formed the atmosphere gradually the steam cooled and condensed into tiny drops of water which became heavier and heavier until they fell as rain it rained and it rained for years and years Low Places on the crust were filled in with water forming the oceans lakes and seas today nearly 34s of the Earth's crust is covered by water the core or center of the earth is believed to be metallic surrounding this is a layer called the mantle above the mantle is the crust a thin hard shell covering the entire Earth the crust of the earth is in constant change everywhere it is being worn Away by the forces of nature this process is called erosion one of the forces wearing down the crust is the action of the Sea The Waves strike rocks wearing away particles that are carried into the sea rainwater also contains chemicals which help to dissolve and break down rocks water also gets into tiny crevices of rocks freezes and expands cracking the Rocks small plants can now find a foothold in rock crumbled by the work of ice Frost and Rain larger plants change the Earth's crust by spreading their Roots through the cracks The Roots expand and widen the openings until the Rocks crack apart rocks loosened by the action of rain ice and plants are further broken down by gravity it takes a long long time every Rock Every Mountain is slowly being worn away in some regions m moving rivers of ice called glaciers grind and Crush Solid Rock into loose particles and carry them to other areas in the wearing down process rocks are gradually broken apart ground down into smaller and smaller pieces wind changes the Earth's crust by picking up tiny bits of sand and gravel using them as grinding tools to cut away rocks softer parts of the rock are worn away first leaving strange shapes like these of all the forces that are wearing away the Earth's crust the most powerful and destructive is running water as it moves it picks up particles of rocks and other material from the Earth's surface millions of tons of top soil are carried to the Sea every day by the rivers of the world how does a mountain wear away let's find out the shape of a mountain often reveals its age the jagged and irregular Peaks here indicate a young Mountain over a long period of time Time air wind rain and Ice wear down the Peaks and smooth off the surface this is the shape of a mature mountain in old age the mountain is reduced to nearly the level of the surrounding flat land worn down to the level of the plain the mountain has been carried to the Sea all EXP osed land is constantly being broken down and carried to the Sea if there were no way for the land to rise up the ocean would today cover the entire surface of the Earth without dry land there would be no people on Earth how do mountains stay above the sea this diagram represents a large mountain range mountains have Roots Sinking Deep into the Earth scientists believe that mountains are floating on a layer of rock two great forces act upon the crust the force from the weight of mountains pressing down and the force from the rock layer beneath pushing up between these two forces the Rocks adjust their positions until a state of balance is reached what happens when the top of a mountain is worn away the the mountain becomes lighter the balance is upset and the force pushing up becomes stronger the entire Mountain Rises until the forces become equal again as the top of the mountain continues to wear away eventually the entire mountain range is removed entire mountain ranges have been pushed up but often only a small section of land is raised since forces within the Earth are constantly acting on the crust it gives way at its weakest points by developing cracks along the lines of these cracks sections of rock slip and move to relieve stresses any place where two sections of the land move in relation to each other along the line of a crack is called a fault it may be only a fraction of an inch it may be many thousands of feet sometimes rocks will move without faulting under tremendous stress a rock layer will bend these rock strata are being bent upwards due to forces exerted beneath their Center this bending of the Earth's crust is called folding like most Rock changes this is a slow process taking taking many many years the curved lines of the rock layers here tell us that this rock Mass has been folded rocks may be folded upwards or downwards folding and faulting are found in Every Mountain Side they furnish important evidence about the origin of mountains folding and faulting are often responsible for sudden movement ments of the Earth's crust called earthquakes watch closely as we reconstruct with drawings the events leading to and causing an earthquake here forces pushing up in the center and from the sides have caused the rock layers to fault normally the Rocks under stress would slip upward compression from adjoining rocks prevents slipping under tremendous stress huge areas of rock actually Bend until their limit is reached then the Rocks snap into their new positions a sudden movement or slipping of part of the Earth's crust is the cause of an earthquake in this way more land is pushed up exposing fresh rock but eventually It is worn away again and carried to the Sea the fast moving Waters of the river enable it to carry along the particles of rock and soil the river's current slows as it empties into the sea this slowing of the river's current causes the particles to fall owing to their size and density the Lar largest particles fall first nearest the shore smaller Pebbles and lighter Sands are carried out farther the finest sand and Tiny clay particles travel out much farther when these fragments of mud sand and clay fall to the Bottom of the Sea they are called sediments as the river continues to drop its load layer upon layer is built up a truck sof develops as the sediments sink deeper and deeper into the denser layers below this is a slow process taking many millions of years when the sediments reach a thickness of 40 to 50,000 ft certain forces not yet completely understood by scientists have begun to press against them from the sides under intense compression and heat the lower layers of sediment Rock lose their strength soften and begin to flow the upper layers remaining hard fold and fault as the entire area is uplifted over a long period of time a mountain range is developed a mountain range and a broad Plateau now stand where there was once a shallow sea within the mountain range Chang are still taking place pockets in the Earth's crust are now formed by hot molten rock called magma slowly the magma Works its way up to the surface the magma usually cools as it nears the top of the crust sometimes the magma forces its way up and through the top of the crust hot magma gases and shattered rocks are forced out magma flowing out upon the Earth's surface is called lava the Lava Rock and Ashes shot out of the opening soon cool a layer of rock is formed then a layer of Ash as the eruptions continue layer after layer pile up until a mound is formed such a mound or mountain is called a volcano the volcano grows higher and higher some volcanoes have reached a height of more than 5 miles in many instances the lava does not flow out of the top of the crater but through cracks in the sides in time the volcano dies down the lava in the center hard mountain and sooner or later like all mountains it will be worn Away by the air wind and water we are sure of two things about our Earth that it is very old and that it is constantly changing most of the changes occur so slowly that they cannot be seen in a man's lifetime yet we can read the story of these Chang es in the rocks that form the Earth's crust we can learn how land masses are pushed up from the floor of the sea how a plane becomes a mountain range and how the Earth is worn away this is a story of our changing Earth all right there you go our changing Earth the crust um thank you Encyclopedia Britannica uh thanks for joining us
