foreign yes yeah that was I think it was only 30 seconds and then I slowed it down so it was only 40 seconds but yeah boom hi I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avg's lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was a super short film uh called the Cuttlefish which was ultimately from the Mogul Brothers Library where you could uh rent and purchase 16 millimeter films that were silent almost all silent uh shorts that were educational or informational and I think occasionally they did features but a lot of it was this um these shorts and they when they closed they went a couple places ended up and Anthology film archive and then those collections got it got split um part went to the prelanger archive and part of it went to the Oregon archive and we've been scanning the Oregon archive stuff and we also digitized um some films for the prelanger archive so we've actually worked with the Mogul Brothers collection a lot more than you need to know I don't know um so behind me I have a film scanner see if I can get this right yes right there we have a film set up and this one the title is really fascinating to me it's walk safe explanation point Young America like huh what if it's trying to educate young people calling them Young America doesn't make any sense to me so I'm wondering if there's another agenda with this film so here it is walk safe you hear that they're part of our school program teaching kids to walk safely and we're pretty proud of it bye bye have a nice day and you know why we're so proud of it because they're teaching the smaller kids when and how to cross the street safely you see these drivers of the cars and trucks can't always see you they have to watch out for other traffic so it's up to you to see them now that boy's sister is in the school's Patrol she's teaching him to stop and look she's also teaching him to listen you hear that siren that says get off the street let the police car fire truck or ambulance go past and then take another look and then make your Crossing but lots of Corners don't have guards or patrols to help you instead there are traffic signals sometimes those signals have walk and don't walk lights like this and some of them even have buttons to push you press the button to tell the light you're waiting they're waiting because the light is red means stop don't walk and that's what it says don't walk there a new green light that means you go but first look all around you and listen just to be sure it's safe that's the way to go those children have learned to Cross by themselves The Safe Way but most Crossings don't have guards or lights to help you get to the other side like this one at a corner like this you kids have to look for yourselves all around you and listen now after you make sure the street is clear of cars and other vehicles in all directions you can walk safely across and stay up with the others say little girl look out there's a motorbike watch out that doll could have been the little girl it could have been any child watching this picture it could have been you see streets are for cars and trucks and motorcycles and other vehicles you children aren't very visible to those drivers they can't always see you and that's why you should always watch out for them whenever you cross the street if you play or run out in the street they'll knock you down so stop and search especially for cars that may turn in front of you when you see them be sure they see you before you cross out in the country the roads are a lot different than city streets most of them don't even have sidewalks but they do have a correct side for walking safely Excuse Me Miss blocker okay tell them about that because that's why I live out in the country try it Tommy well on the street our road has no sidewalk like this one our teachers back home cut us always to walk facing the traffic then you can see cars coming at you from way off and their drivers can see you yes that's right Tommy and one more thing make sure you keep as far off the roadway as possible like here walk with extra Care on rainy days too because rain or an oil slick can make any Street Slippery night walking takes special care too so to walk safely at night wear something light colored the drivers can see like the boy's white jacket or carry a reflector or flashlight and wave it like that wave it so those night drivers can see you here's the place you'd say would be safest of all inside the school bus and it is most of the time but what happens when the doors open everybody wants out at once for right now you exit one row at a time and be orderly there we go now come on now that's the way it's very good it's a lot smarter to be careful a lot more fun than being hurt that's nice and safe even your own Mother's car isn't always safe if you jump out on the wrong side no no wrong door that's right get out on the sidewalk side because sidewalks are built for people so everybody can walk safely crosswalks are painted on the street to show you the best places to cross but you still must be extra alert like here now a parked car can block your view so step out carefully where you can see past the parked car now you know it's safe school's out time for play but time to play safely Debbie Allen no hold it walk safely always stay inside the crosswalk until you've made it to the other side that's good now that's the right way to get into a car on the sidewalk side and buckle up those seat belts ride safely too that's the way to get home all in one piece on the sidewalk side foreign at night it means wearing light color clothes waving something bright we've never playing near a busy street out trying to cross through traffic [Music] means playing safe like these kids where cars can't hurt you but most of all it means not dodging out in the street that's the worst because driver's not expect you and they can't see you like they did Sandy [Applause] today's Electronics [Music] James Clerk Maxwell physicist 1831-1879 discovered basic laws of electromagnetism of no use in his time his work ultimately set the stage for all of today's Communications technology foreign mathematician 1815-1879 created a symbolic system to record logical thought a pure idea which in this Century led to the modern computer [Music] these three scientists basic research was carried out because of their thirst for knowledge within a century what they found reshaped the world [Music] thank you [Music] who is blazing today's research Trails accumulating the basic knowledge that will be needed tomorrow [Music] one such researcher is Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole oceanographic institution his curiosity about how the seabed was formed led him to investigate one of the deepest underwater Canyons the Cayman trough in the Caribbean Sea that's really good the past 15 years have seen a revolution in our concept of the Earth's crust this revolution known as the theory of plate tectonics says that the continents are being pushed apart by forces beneath the sea floor it tells us that the tremendous heat trying to escape from the interior of our Earth splits the crust into huge floating plates our continents are part of these drifting plates floating like ice packs on a Restless sea a variety of different kinds of scientific measurements support this view but we wanted to find some direct evidence [Music] so he descended in a bath escape to a depth of eight kilometers when we dove into the Cayman trough we entered the terror itself for the first time [Music] it was a thrilling and frightening moment we were fascinated to find the Twisted cylinders of lava scattered all over the landscape [Music] into the crust that has been torn open molten rock flows rising up from the depths [Music] activity erupts underwater and when lava pillows are formed particular footage was shot in the shallow Waters off Hawaii [Music] The Sounds you are hearing are those of underwater volcanic activity in the Cayman trough this is caused by the separation of plates it is the sound of the Earth itself The Echoes of creation thank you by knowing how the continents move we may get a better idea of where to look for new oil deposits and minerals [Music] the plate tectonics theory affects our lives in another way and the immense lighting plates collide and grind against each other earthquakes may occur at the San Andreas Fault in California two colliding plates are under study the land around the fault is moving steadily at the rate of 64 centimeters or about two inches per year if this fault should slip the results could be disastrous for millions of people these experts are measuring some of the energy buildup in the fault so that perhaps someday they may be able to predict when it will slip again only four of them are transmitting but these this one here looks really [Music] a different area of research concerns the ocean of air in which we live the man who sent this research balloon a lot to probe that ocean is Dr David mercrae of the University of Denver if you were to ride this balloon up through the sky you'd notice the air gradually getting colder but around 15 kilometers up the temperature levels off at that altitude the stratosphere begins there is located the ozone layer this thin layer of gas Shields us from the burning cancer-producing ultraviolet rays shot out from the Sun [Music] [Applause] for years we have been studying how the ozone layer is formed since it Shields us from these deadly rays how did the data looks Peak [Music] those studies proved most opportune for other experts had come upon a new and potentially deadly problem was it possible they wondered that man-made substances could be destroying the protective ozone layer that could be serious for only a five percent depletion in the ozone could trigger a worldwide increase in skin cancer we had to know that's when balloon research started to pay off the scientists already knew what to do they set up more high altitude balloons loaded with detection equipment and began collecting additional data here take a look at this the balloons Gondola is Right smack in the middle of the ozone layer and these Peaks he speaks are due to man-made fluorocarbons right up there with it definitely infiltrating Stratosphere we had our first answer [Music] sensors aren't in mechanism we do not understand or it may someday be dangerously depleted by the substances we've allowed to enter it [Music] we first started wondering about the basic chemical reactions occurring in the stratosphere it all seemed so esoteric only the government the National Science Foundation gave us any support and encouragement now it could turn out to be crucial to the health and safety of our nation you couldn't have known it back then could you foreign [Music] still another scientific research project concerned with the life of a simple Fern may have a critical application to the world food shortage one major food source is rice a key problem in growing more and better rice is fertilizer [Music] or fertilizers replace depleted soil nitrogen but such fertilizers must be manufactured out of expensive natural resources for this reason experts like Ray Valentine at the University of California at Davis are investigating plants that convert nitrogen in the air to soil nitrates they want to understand this process so that it can be more widely applied [Music] in basic research you never know where the leads may come from this little Fern is called the Zola it has lived this way for millions and millions of years a microscopic blue-green algae lives with it now we're studying this little Fern it has a Real Genius for plucking nitrogen from the air and enriching the soil with it just look at this rice notice how much taller the rice is with the Zola than the rice without the question is how does it do it that's what we're trying to find out here if scientists can learn more about the azola it can be grown cheaper and in greater quantity it might even be possible to introduce a Zola's algae into other food plants if this type of basic research is successful then food production around the world might be revolutionized one more basic research area is laser chemistry probing the molecule with one of science's newest most versatile tools lasers are unique in that they produce a very fine beam of only one frequency or color the laser strong enough to punch a hole in a rock or gentle enough to treat a diseased eye a laser beam can also reach into the minute world of rapidly changing chemical processes even a flame although application of lasers to chemistry has just begun they are already being used by Dr Robin hochstrosser of the University of Pennsylvania to learn more about the scientific phenomenon called coherence aside in order to do this experiment so this is a one pulse prepares assistant one pulse does something to the third pulse cause it to fluoresce or not fluoresce right so it works very well we're using a laser here to create a coherent effect in this liquid nitrogen when a substance is in a coherent state it can carry and transmit energy with little or no loss such as in the superconductor it's rare to find this state in nature and chemists are interested in it because it tells them more about the fundamental nature of the interactions between the molecules that they study in our experiment we know we will have achieved coherence in this liquid when a blue beam goes in the beam of another color comes out is everybody ready turn off the lights please fire the laser the blue beam changes to greenish yellow because the blue beam has transferred some of its energy into the liquid the power of the blue beam has forced the molecules into a strict pattern coherence has been achieved [Music] standing coherence has produced the key to transmitting huge amounts of Power with very little loss of energy something we desperately need laser-induced chemistry May soon create new materials synthesize new drugs better harness energy and give us insights into the nature of living things still other basic research is underway at these Hot Springs scientists have found a previously unknown form of life living on hydrogen and carbon dioxide of still unknown potentials where will interesting news and it seems like this is an extension of that whereas this is geared towards kids learning about science and math and Technology but it's really press releases for these companies that are developing these Technologies or for universities that have developed these patents of things um so this film it says innovators on the can that might not be what it is I don't know it starts off at a UNC Chapel Hills football field and so I'm kind of like huh that's weird um so we're gonna watch it uh uh innovators enjoy maybe I don't know [Applause] foreign s are pretty much the same but the game has come a long way since I spent my Saturday afternoons in the stadium you know it's funny how things change how they progress gradually and you don't really notice it until you stop to think about it football for instance when was the last time you saw the single wing or drop kick and when you think about how things have changed you realize that it didn't just happen somebody made it happen that changes the improvements are really Innovations and the people who made them they're the innovators it's the same in every field of human endeavor the number one guys the leaders are people with the capacity to come up with new ideas and the ability to execute them in just 50 years The Art of Flight became a science from this to this look at the Innovations in Communications transportation industry [Music] everywhere you look it's the innovators who create progress making the way for others to follow it's the same in your business too although maybe you haven't really stopped to think about it lately there is an organization in the automotive replacement parts industry that can fairly be called the leaders of that industry it's the National Automotive Parts Association Napa a name I'm sure you're familiar with but I'm also pretty sure you haven't thought about the whole story of Napa or you'd realize it's the kind of a team you should be part of so I'd like to talk to you for a few minutes about Napa and why they're number one the leaders the best in the business I call them the innovators [Music] you know I learned a long time ago that in anything competitive there is one winner and that's whoever puts the most points on the board now almost without exception that winner is the one who can innovate who can provide solutions to problems as they occur who can create a plan and then carry out that plan better than the competition that's the leader whose success everyone else tries to copy and if the leaders are the innovators then I think of the others as well duplicators because the best they can ever be is second so let's take a look at Napa to see what makes them number one but let's don't just look at claims let's look at the facts or to put it another way let's don't look just at the Press clippings let's take a look at the score 50 years ago today there was no Napa or any other group effort to deal with the complex problems of Distributing automotive replacement parts yet there was a desperate need for some organized approach to these problems so this group of men formed the first such organization and even then in so doing they became the innovators among the very first principles were these which by the way continued to be their strongest guidelines even today first to distribute only the finest Quality Parts made and selling services before we examine them in detail let me make one other basic point just like a good football team the most important element is people no team or system or organization is any better than its people and this is the greatest strength of Napa people others in this industry talk about years of experience at Napa going into our second half century we speak of generations of experience people in tune with jobbers people who have learned from jobbers people trained in management inventory Finance all of the things that make a successful job or operation because these are the people who have been jobbers look around you and you'll see that the best coaches are ex-players and that means a quality and depth of experience and dedication that no one else can match with this kind of support Napa jobbers become aggressive simply because they are the best served have the best programs in every area and they know it the Napa people with you now will explain how that relates specifically to you a little later right now let's go back to those service programs and take a look at a few more representative Innovations of Napa first with NAPA Distribution Centers titles are pretty well self-explanatory the OEM to Napa interchange series which enables your customer to cross refer almost everything and that makes it a great selling tool for you one more Innovation too Napa Brands why because we found here a way to further security for our jobbers Market security when you have these they are yours alone you're not out there selling the same brand as every other jobber in your area you create a market for these Brands like Napa filters NAPA batteries Napa tires and so on and you've made a market completely exclusive to you nobody else can touch it get somebody famous or interesting for all these I guess they were doing a con you know convention or something for Napa I mean come on Napa just call it Napa um for the Napa jobbers um and so they're like oh yeah so we'll have a presentation who can we get oh Tom Harmon he's a newscaster uh you know or he's a sports announcer so like let's get him he's great and oh my gosh holy cow I mean so we have other examples of um things made for jobbers basically people who are working Auto places or the Service Garage garages that do repairs so they they're basically buying parts that uh these garage or service stations would carry and sell AC Delco does a perfect job they do a rip-off of Laugh-In that's actually kind of funny like it has music and singing I've shown it in the past it wasn't great but oh my gosh that's not spill was horrible and it might be why I never saw it uh and actually what's interesting is so the title innovators is a very generic title and so I would look whenever I get a collection of films I log the films um but I don't often know what they are so I'll do a search online or through different uh AV databases to see like okay innovators it's a long film I don't know anything else about it and it would you know bring up this description and the description I had was you know let's follow these three at T long-term employees and see the contributions that they've made to the company and so I was like well that might be interesting I don't know and so I I had no idea that uh Napa um made this film and you know probably there's no AV database that would list this because this is specifically for the niche of uh Napa and the Napa jobbers that's it and it probably was you know made and shown for like two years and then that's it would be one and done so I don't know where this came from but yikes well we suffered through it together and uh you know as a reminder I get often get requests and you know I got a request more 16 millimeter films about Wankel engines please a fan so we had a Wankel mention in there um well okay thanks everybody for tuning in that was outrageous um in its tedium and so we now have a lower threshold as far as how boring we
