it's French version of uh farmyard babies uh which I don't have a copy of I don't have fard babies I kind of look to see sometimes I I like to do a comparison contrast to see like okay besides the language is there something else changed um anywh who uh let's watch another cornet film we might be watching a lot of cornet films today I don't know this is the fun of being being thoughtful and it uh I'm going to caution you the ending is clipped so we don't know what's going to happen [Music] thoughtfulness everybody tells me to be more thoughtful well I'd like to be more thoughtful if I only knew what it meant why should I worry about being thoughtful what will it get me in this world it's every man for himself how do you go about being thoughtful what do you do every time I try I only fit into your everyday life to discover some knoow about thoughtfulness let's follow Jane Proctor into her home for the Proctors are one family who have learned the art of thoughtfulness if we watch why Ed you do I'll bet when you meet a new girl you notice everything she likes so you can be nice to her well you can do the same thing with your family Marlene Davis huh the new girl at school she's worthwhile in fact that's what makes lawfulness worthwhile well I'll go outside and my homework now where'd you put it mom on her bed she'll find it in a minute it's the when she went it isn't it mhm Mom Dad Eddie she's found it come on then what happens does she just start screaming again seems like she was uh kind of hair trigger as far as like um tightly wound is maybe what would say um let's learn about camouflage in nature through pattern matching enjoy most backgrounds in nature are not single colors but combinations of colors in various shades of light and dark that form patterns a pattern of moss on the ground The Ridges of bark on a tree a sharp etching of interlaced twigs and branches or the outlines of a leaf cluster such backgrounds are among many kinds of natural patterns similar matching patterns are found among animals birds of the Nighthawk family for instance bear an overall pattern that matches the ground and mossy rocks where they often Nest the pattern of these young Nighthawks Blends very closely with the grassy ground pattern of their nest a line pattern of Twigs is closely imitated by the Slender body and legs of the walking stick unless the insect moves it is very difficult to see unlike most insects the walking stick has no wings so it cannot fly to escape enemies but its remarkable camouflage offers protection and is a good example of adaptation to environment the bark moth Bears a natural pattern so similar to the trees on which it rests that it is camouflaged even when seen close the tree frog also bears a bark matching pattern while its ground dwelling relative the garden toad has an overall pattern that blends with the mtled Earth most small animals such as the rabbit bear simple ground matching patterns these patterns may be modified as in the case of the ground squirrel to blend with the open field pattern of grasses and other low plants this ground squirrel of the middle west is also known as the striped gopher a pattern of Stripes running lengthwise along the body is found among various animals it is claimed that such Stripes also help to conceal motion both sets of these stripes are moving although the motion of the lower ones is not as easy to detect the principle of lengthwise stripe in motion is Illustrated in this garter snake a pattern of lines on the neck of the bittern suggests the grass pattern of the marsh where this bird lives when frightened the bter May hold in one position quite motionless the Lively kild deer Plover Bears markings similar to the Pebbles and Shadows of the fields and shorelines where this waiting bird lives the speckled eggs of the kild deer too match their surroundings and the baby chicks are also well camouflaged the kild deer markings that look so conspicuous in a museum setting may look only like Shadows against a natural setting the matching of a natural pattern is even more remarkable in certain animals that can produce a change of skin color the tree frog has the ability to change skin color the grayish green color that the frog has on a leaf changes to grayish Brown when it is on a tree the ability to change skin color is shared by other amphibians by some reptils and by certain fish fish The Flounder is a remarkable example of camouflage usually the flounder resembles the pattern of the pebbly ocean floor on which it lies flat on its side the matching is so close that the fish seems to disappear in the sand against light colored sand the flounder's color and pattern change to match this background so closely that we barely see the outline of the fish the moving Gill help us locate the head in laboratory experiments flounders have even reacted to artificial backgrounds the polka dot pattern is being imitated quite closely by The Flounder another principle of camouflage is related to the age difference in animals these adult egrets are white the young egret's first feathers are black then gradually become lighter as it gets older the theory is that dark colors serve to protect the young while they are growing up the deer shows difference in color and pattern between the adult and the young a pattern of sunlight filtered through leaves is suggested By the Light Flex on the Fawn whose safety depends on being hidden in in a Thicket or in tall grass modling and dappling on young animals Blends them with their natural background During the period when they are young and less able to escape from enemies natural patterns may vary not only with age but with difference in sex there is a pronounced difference in coloration between the male and female of many species of birds as in this pair of bobbling usually the male is conspicuous and the female drab notice how the stripes and drab colors of the female blend with her grassy nesting sight on the other hand the bold colors of the male may help to divert attention away from his well- hidden family a similar example is seen in the ring necked pheasant the mtled brown pattern of the female Blends almost perfectly with a grassy field where she nests but the Bold markings of the male make him stand out clearly this pair of pher ropes relatives of the sandpipers illustrates an interesting reversal of the duties of the Sexes among these birds it is the female which is more bold colored in the markings on the head and neck while the male incubates the eggs and wears the planer plumage among some animals breaking up outlines affords camouflage some birds have bold areas of contrasting colors which help to break up the body outline the shape of The Goldfinch is broken up by dark markings on the head WI wings and tail bold patterns of color help disguise the overall shape of the redheaded woodpecker contrasting markings on the Avet may suggest shadows and Reflections that make the body outline harder to see in many animals the conspicuous outline of the bright eyes may be disguised by a line or band of color the black areas on the raccoon's face resemble a Bandit's mask a light or dark streak through the eye is common among many birds such as the familiar Bob White Quail the Bold markings help to break up the outline of the head another kind of bold marking that may confuse an enemy are the eye spots on many Ms and butterflies it is claimed that a bird or other enemy May aim at such a bold spot on the wing and thus miss the vulnerable parts of the insect's body other insects are iridescent and perhaps the shifting light and dark produces a dazzling effect that confuses an enemy of course camouflage may serve to protect an animal in more than one way the Bold markings of the skunk for instance help break up the outline of the body in this particular setting the white Parts blend with the white flowers but some observers consider such bold markings warning coloration a kind of advertising to enemies to stay away from such a well-armed animal and so by very bold markings by combinations of bold markings and drab colors and by overall patterns that match natural backgrounds camouflage in many variations provides protection for animals in their natural [Music] environment uh somebody told me there's a presidential debate tonight uh so I'm showing you this enjoy e [Music] [Music] all right let's begin with something like this an event of national importance is taking place in the state of Illinois the 1858 Senate race between the incumbent Democrat and the Challenger from the newly formed Republican party is capturing the attention of the entire [Music] country two extraordinary candidates judge Steven A Douglas and Challenger Abraham Lincoln are facing off in a series of encounters that are already being hailed as the great debates [Music] for 3 hours yesterday Lincoln and Douglas held the attention of a vast but partisan crowd as they debated the great issue of our time should slavery be allowed in newly formed States and territories who has the right to decide this question good drip unbelievable it's the kind of story you dream about controversial issue everyone taking sides the candidates on fire how much of the debate did you get every word they said this shorthand is going to revolutionize journalism and I hope increase our circulation it puts the herald right up there with the Washington and New York dieses but I still want to do a layout that's all our own I agree uh why don't we print the complete debate as a special insert and then front page a series of Step headline features on the opinions of the people you have all the materials I sure do everyone talked from the moment I arrived even 24 hours before the candidates were due to arrive you could feel the tension building all over town Lincoln supporter huh yes sir how do you think a back Woodsman got to be running for the US Senate because he's one of us excuse me I find that sign in bad taste judge Douglas supports the Declaration of Independence from what I read he sees Negroes is worthy of two things hard work and to be owned by whites judge Douglas said the Declaration did not declare all men equal in all respects now I am not the equal of a negro slave I'm sure this gentleman would agree with me Dan Benton Harold reporter what do you think judge Douglas has say about this sign this and tell your readers Steven Douglas is a great American fighting for what makes this country great the people what do you think Lincoln would say about it I'm not sure I'd pay attention to someone who's riling up people with anti-slavery talk if we do we'll be fighting a civil war mark my words black Republicans just cuz we're against slavery doesn't make us black excuse me sir you wouldn't know where I could find a place to stay in town would you ah Town's about filled but try Tes Tavern around the corner she might have a room for you especially if you tell her you're a Lincoln man [Music] thanks yes sir things are heating up out there all right why do you suppose that is partly the candidates partly the issues well from the copy I've seen on the debate so far they keep coming back to the same issues the Kansas Nebraska Act and whether the new state should decide for themselves to permit slavery The Dread Scott Supreme Court ruling and its implication that the government's for extending slavery those were still the big issues yesterday but I heard something deeper underneath all that well such as who should decide an issue any issue the federal government or the individual states that's where the division is this is that reporter fell I was telling you about Dan Benton name no Emerson all right Dr Kenny here well everyone looking forward to the big battle tomorrow Democrats already I don't know about those black Republicans I think Republicans anyone like to pick a winner will someone please tell this old Foreigner what is the event you speak about I'm Dr Kent Anderson is my name I just came on the boat from Sweden well welcome welcome there's an election going on for the US Senate and both the candidates are coming into town tomorrow you have this fussing this arguing this uh what you call the debat debate debate every time you have the election this is a very special election because of the issues and the two candidates Steven Douglas who at present holds the seat is the most distinguished and dynamic politician in America today that's your opinion mister well just look at the facts at 27 he was a state supreme court justice at 30 a US congressman and a 34 senator in Washington he fights for the right of the people to make their own decisions he's only 5' four tall but they say once he starts to speak you can see why they call him the Little Giant some people call them other things and what is the other man Lincoln is the candidate of a new party we call Republicans and he's an example of what opportunity is all about in this country born in a log cabin to a poor family with very little education he became a self-taught lawyer and is now a prominent politician not afraid to speak out against wrongs like slavery and that's the big issue in this country slavery these two have different views on it and both want to be Senator M some say both want to be president so you say say the one man is in favor of the slaves and the other one is not in favor no it's not quite that to understand English is hard enough with one person you sir well four years ago Steven Douglas put a bill to the Senate called the Kansas Nebraska bill it says that the newly formed states of Kansas and Nebraska could decide for themselves by a popular vote whether they wanted slavery if you ask me it was Douglas's bid to win support from the slavery ridden South so he could get to the White House if people don't stop criticizing the southern states they'll withdraw from the union I'm not so sure we need them the north is growing very rapidly and is very different from the south and it needs the farm products of the South its factories need the cotton we need each other to survive now that's what Steven Douglas is trying to do save the union and to be able to do that he wants to save slavery Douglas doesn't push for or against slavery he says that the people of each state or territory should decide not the federal government it's what he calls popular sovereignty yes but where would a democracy be without some direction from the government it would be in the hands of the people there are certain basic rights that can't be decided by voting tell me one the one Lincoln is reminding us of that it's wrong for one man to own another he is welcome to his views so long as he doesn't force them on everyone else that that is what this country is about a man's right to his own ideas what's your views on slavery I'm married a sou girl who was brought up on a plantation with slaves I've seen the slave system and it works takes chains and whips to make some of them work from what I hear horror stories about slavery are greatly exaggerated no I know owners aren't stupid they're good businessmen and they know slaves treated properly but work properly now on clar's property they uh they live in clean whitewashed cabins they raise their own vegetables and they're well they're treated as part of a family wait a minute come back let's hear what a negro has to say about this leave him go he's been through enough what do you mean well let's just say he didn't work on this man's wife's Plantation where slaves were treated like family he was a slave yes he was well the scars on that man's back are as thick as your arm when I asked him why said well I guess I just got tore up with the whip a few times I said well why and he said well they saw me with a book slaves weren't allowed to have no books much of anything else I guess that's what Lincoln is fighting to stop and when you hear him speak you get the feeling he'll do it you've heard him speak I was a delegate at the Republican nominating convention in Springfield in June that's when he was nominated and no one who is there will ever forget it it set him apart do you remember what he said you started by quoting the scriptures A house divided against itself cannot stand and then he said I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free but then he also added that he didn't expect the union to be dissolved I do not expect the house to fall he said but I do expect it will cease to be divided yes and that speech continues to get him into trouble I'll wager will'll hear something about it tomorrow Douglas says those words are inviting a war between the North and the South do you think the union can stand divided over slavery let's take our own vote who thinks the country can stand divided who says no looks like this group is evenly divided well I toast both our candidates tomorrow they'll show us the winner Steven dou here here Mr Lincoln [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hey w [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] ladies and gentlemen I have known Mr Lincoln for nearly 25 years we both struggled with poverty in a Strange Land I was a school teacher in the town of Winchester he was a saloon Keeper in the town of Salem he could beat any of the boys wrestling and presided with great dignity over horse races and fist fight Mr Lincoln has appeared and disappeared from the political scene many times after one such retirement to private life he came up again in 1854 just in time to make this abolition or black Republican platform hit him hit him again having formed this new party for Wig and Democrat deserters Lincoln now Bobs up again to say that our government cannot survive half slave and half free and he's right why not Washington Jefferson Franklin Madison and our great forefathers made it so why can it not exist on the foundation they gave it can leaving each state free to do as it pleases regarding the question of slavery if we will stand by that principle then you will find that this great Republic can exist forever now I have some questions for you sir do you stand pledge today against the admission of any more slave states to the union even if the people want them ladies and gentlemen I should be extremely glad to know there will never be another slave state admitted to the union but I must add that if the people of a slave free territory chose to adopt a slave Constitution I see no alternative if we own the country to admit them to the union do you stand pledge today to the abolition of slavery in the district of Colombia I should be extremely glad to see slavery abolished from the District of Colombia provided the abolition be gradual agreed to by the majority of the voters and that compensation be made to unwilling owners I would like to see Congress in the words of Henry Clay sweep from our Capital this foul blot Upon Our Nation and do you stand pledge today to prohibit slavery in all the territories of the United States north as well as south of the Missouri Compromise line I am impliedly if not expressly pledged to a belief in the right and duty of Congress to prohibit slavery in all the United States territories ladies and gentlemen judge Douglas has said that this difficulty over the institution of slavery is merely the agitation of office Seekers and ambitious politicians the Bible says somewhere that we are all desperately selfish I do not claim that I am any less so than the average of men but I do claim that I am not more selfish than judge Douglas judge has again referred to a Springfield speech in which I said A house divided against itself cannot stand he has wared upon these sentiments as Satan does upon the Bible it is not true that our fathers as judge Douglas assumes made this government part slave and part free the truth is they found the institution existing Among Us and they left it as they found it because of the difficulty the absolute impossibility of its immediate removal why did the fathers of this government make provision that the African slave trade be cut off at the end of 20 years why did they make provision that in all the new territories we owned at that time that slavery should be inhibited forever they looked to its being being placed in the course of ultimate Extinction good good did so I turned to judge Douglas and I ask him why he cannot let these policies of our fathers alone why he has introduced a new policy to possibly extend slavery judge Douglas has said that I in favor of setting the slave and free states at War but I ask him when the fathers made the Constitution with the attitude I described did they make any war no I proposed nothing more than a return to the policy of our [Music] fathers now I bring forward these questions for judge Douglas if the Supreme Court shall decide that states cannot exclude slavery from their limits or are you in favor Mr Lincoln cast blame on the Supreme Court by supposing that they would violate the constitution I tell him such a thing is not possible it would be an act of moral treason that no man on the bench could ever descend to are you in favor of acquiring new territories without regard to the effect on the nation with slavery whenever it becomes necessary in our growth and progress to acquire more territory I am in favor of it without regard to the question of slavery and once we've acquired it I will leave the people free to do as they please either to make it slave or free territory as they please can the people of the United States territory in any lawful way excludes slavery from its limits prior to the formation of a state constitution he got him with that one what do you mean well dougas has been saying that new territories can have slavery if they want it Lincoln is reversing the question asking if they can also exclude it if they want to if Douglas answers yes he offends the South if he answers no he offends the north I answer emphatically that in my opinion the people of a territory can by lawful means exclude slavery from its limits prior to the formation of a state constitution it matters not what the Supreme Court May Hereafter decide on this the people have the lawful means to introduce it or exclude it as they please for the reason that slavery cannot exist a day or an hour anywhere unless it has the support of the local police regulation what you say the South will never go for that this audience cannot hear what the speakers have to say unless silence be preserved as possible with regard to the moral issue of slavery I only have this to say it is an issue that will continue in this country long after the poor tongues of Judge Douglas and myself shall be cited it is an eternal struggle between two principles the one is the common right of humanity the other the divine right of kings it is the same Same Spirit that says you toil and work and earn bread and I'll eat it no matter in what shape it comes whether from the mouth of a king who seeks to bestride the people of his own nation and live by the fruit of their labor or as an apology from One race of men for enslaving another it is the same tyrannical principle [Applause] so who do you think won well I guess that's up for the people to decide on Election Day that's what this country is really all about well sure we have the right to elect those who govern us but what I hear Lincoln saying is are there certain basic rights like Freedom that all Americans have that can never be legislated it's a very good question yes it is [Music] [Laughter] l n [Music] uh so I got that wrong that's not that was a senatorial debate this is presidential debate good evening the television and radio stations of the United States and their Affiliated stations are proud to provide facil in the election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln said the question was whether this nation could exist half slave or half free in the election of 1960 and with the world around us the question is whether the world will exist half slave or half free whether it will move in the direction of freedom in the direction of the road that we are taking or whether it will move in the direction of slavery I think it will depend in great measure upon what we do here in the United States on the kind of society that we build on the kind of strength that we maintain we discuss tonight domestic issues but I would not want that to be any implication to be given that this does not involve directly our struggle with Mr kushaw for survival Mr kusov is in New York and he maintains the Communist offensive throughout the world because of the productive power of the Soviet Union itself the Chinese Communists have always had a large population but they are important and dangerous now because they are mounting a major effort within their own country the kind of country we have here the kind of society we have the kind of strength we build in the United States will be the defense of Freedom if we do well here if we meet our obligations if we're moving ahead then I think Freedom will be secure around the world if we fail fail then Freedom failed therefore I think the question before the American people is are we doing as much as we can do are we as strong as we should be are we as strong as we must be if we're going to maintain our independence and if we're going to maintain and hold out the hand of friendship to those who look to us for assistance to those who look to us for survival I should make it very clear that I do not think we're doing enough that I am not satisfied as an American with the progress that we're making this is a great country but I think it could be a greater Country and this is a powerful country but I think it could be a more powerful country I'm not satisfied to have 50% of our steel mill capacity unused I'm not satisfied when the United States had last year the lowest rate of economic growth of any major industrialized Society in the world because economic growth means strength and vitality it means we're able to sustain our defenses it means we're able to make our commitments abroad I'm not satisfied when we have over 9 billion worth of food some of it rotting even though there is a hungry world and even though 4 million Americans wait every month for a food package from the government which averages 5 cents a day per individual I saw cases in West Virginia here in the United States where children took home part of their school lunch in order to feed their families because I don't think we're meeting our Our obligation towards these Americans I'm not satisfied when the Soviet Union is turning out twice as many scientists and Engineers as we are I'm not satisfied when many of our teachers are inadequately paid or when our children go to school parttime shifts I think we should have an educational system second to none I'm not satisfied when I see men like Jimmy haer in charge of the largest Union in the United States still free I'm not satisfied when we are failing to develop the natural resources of the United States to the fullest here in the United States which developed the Tennessee Valley and which built the Grand kolie and the other dams in the Northwest United States at the present rate of Hydro power production and that is the Hallmark of an industrialized Society the Soviet Union by 1975 will be be producing more power than we are these are all the things I think in this country that can make our society strong or can mean that it stands still I'm not satisfied until every American enjoys his full constitutional rights if a negro baby is born and this is true also of Puerto Ricans and Mexicans in some of our cities he has about one half as much chance to get through high school as a white baby he has onethird as much chance to get through college as a white student he has about a third as much chance to be a professional man about half as much chance to own a house he has about the four times as much chance that he'll be out of work in his life as the white baby I think we can do better I don't want the talents of any American to go to waste I know that there are those who say that we want to turn everything over to the government I don't at all I want the individuals to meet their responsibility and I want the states to meet their responsibility but I think there is also a national responsibility the argument has been used against every piece of social legislation in the last 25 years the people of the United States individually could not have developed the Tennessee Valley collectively they could have a cotton farmer in Georgia or a peanut farmer or a Dairy Farmer in Wisconsin or Minnesota he cannot protect himself against the forces of supply and demand in the marketplace but working together in effective governmental program he can do so 17 million Americans who live over 65 on an average social Security check of about $78 a month they're not able to sustain themselves individually but they can sustain themselves through the social security system I don't believe in big government but I believe in effective governmental action and I think that's the only way that the United States is going to maintain its freedom it's the only way that we're going to move ahead I think we can do a better job I think we're going to have to do a better job if we are going to meet the responsibilities which time and event have placed upon us we cannot turn the job over to anyone else if the United States fails then the whole cause of Freedom fails and I think it depends in great measure on what we do here in this country the reason Frankl and Roosevelt was a good neighbor in Latin America was because he was a good neighbor in the United States because they felt that the American society was moving again I want us to recapture that image I want people in Latin America and Africa and Asia to start to look to America to see how we're doing things to wonder what the president of the United States is doing and not to look at Kusha or look at the Chinese Communist that is the obligation Upon Our Generation in 1933 Franklin Roosevelt said in his inaugural that this generation of Americans has a rendevu with Destiny I think our generation of Americans has the same rendevu the question now is can Freedom be maintained under the most severe attack attack it is ever known I think it can be and I think in the final analysis it depends upon what we do here I think it's time America started moving again and now the opening statement by vice president Richard M Mixon Smith Senator Kennedy the things that Senator Kennedy has said many of us can agree with there is no question but that we cannot discuss our Internal Affairs in the United States without recognizing that they have a tremendous bearing on our International position there is no question but that this nation cannot stand still because we are in a deadly competition a competition not only with the men in the Kremlin but the men in ping we're ahead in this competition as Senator Kennedy I think is implied but when you're in a race the only only way to stay ahead is to move ahead and I subscribe completely to the spirit that Senator Kennedy has expressed tonight the spirit that the United States should move ahead where then do we disagree I think we disagree on the implication of his remarks tonight and on the statements that he has made on many occasions during his campaign to the effect that the United States has been standing still we heard them that later looking then to this problem of how the United States should move ahead and where the United States is moving I think it is well that we take the advice of a very famous campaigner let's look at the record is the United State standing still is it true that this Administration that Senator Kennedy has charged has been an administration of retreat of Defeat of stagnation is it true that that as far as this country is concerned in the field of electric power in all of the fields that he has mentioned we have not been moving ahead well we have a comparison that we can make we have the record of the Truman administration of 7 and 1/2 years and the 7 and 1/2 years of the school we have built more schools in these last 7 and 1/2 years than we built in the previous 7 and a/2 for that matter in the previous 20 years let's take hydroelectric power we have developed more hydroelectric power in these 7 and 1/2 years than was developed in any previous administration in history let us take hospitals we find that more been built in this Administration than in the previous administration the same is true if there's been more growth in this Administration than in its predecessor but let's not put it there let's put it in terms of the average family what has happened to you we find have gone up five times as much in the Eisenhower Administration as they did in the Truman Administration what about the prices you pay we find that the prices you pay went up five times as much in the Truman Administration as they did in the Eisenhower Administration what's the net result of this this means that the average family income went up 15% in the Eisenhower years as against 2% in the Truman years now this is not standing still but good as this record is May I emphasize it isn't enough a record is never something to stand on it's something to build on and in building on this record I believe that we have the secret for Progress we know the way to progress and I think first of all our own record proves that we know the way Senator Kennedy has suggested that he believes he knows the way I respect the sincerity with he which he makes that suggestion but on the other hand when we look at the various programs that he offers they do not seem to be new they seem to be simply retreads of the programs of the Truman Administration which preceded and I would suggest that during the course of the evening he might indicate those areas in which his programs are new where they will mean more progress than we had then what kind of programs are we for we are for programs that will expand educational opportunity that will give to all Americans their equal chance for education for all of the things which are necessary Neary and dear to the hearts of our people we are for programs in addition which will see that our medical care for the age is are much is much better handled than it is at the present time here again may I indicate that Senator Kennedy and I are not agreement as to the aim we both want to help the old people we want to see that they do have adequate Medical Care the question is the means I think that the means that I advocate will reach that goal better than the the means that he Advocates I could give better examples but for for whatever it is whether it's in the field of housing or health or medical care or schools or the development of electric power we have programs which we believe will move America move her forward and build on the wonderful record that we have made over these past 7 and A2 years now when we look at these programs might I suggest that in evaluating them we often have a tendency to say that the test of a program is how much you're spending I will concede that in all the areas to which I have referred Senator Kennedy would have the federal government spend more than I would have to spend I cost it out the cost of the democratic platform it runs a minimum of 13 and 210 billion a year more than we are presently spending to a maximum of $18 billion a year more than we're presently spending now the Republican platform will cost more too it will cost a minimum of $4 billion a year more a maximum of 4910 billion a year more than we're presently spend now does this mean that his program is better than ours not at all because it isn't a question of how much the federal government spends it isn't a question of which government does the most it's a question of which Administration does the right thing and in our case I do believe that our programs will stimulate the cre ative energies of 180 million free Americans I believe the program that Senator Kennedy Advocates will have a tendency to stifle those creative energies I believe in other words that his programs would lead to the stagnation of the Motive Power that we need in this country to get progress the final point that I would like to make is this Senator Kennedy has suggested in his speeches that we lack compassion for the poor for the old and for others that are unfortunate let us understand throughout this campaign that his motives and mine are sincere I know what it means to be poor I know what it means to see people who are unemployed I know Senator Kennedy feels as deeply about these problems as I do but our disagreement is not about the goals for America but only about the means to reach those goals thank you Mr Nixon that completes the opening statements and now the candidates will answer questions or comment upon one another's answers to questions put by correspondents of the networks all right so that's how they did it um 66 years ago no 64 years ago um back in the day uh I am not going to watch the debate tonight because I yeah I'm just not going to watch it um but if you do watch it think about this you know think about what you just saw and think about the format think about the posturing um you know Nixon historically became a villain and yet he is uh seems to be pretty uh what he's saying seems rational and thoughtful um so anyways just let's just see if how it plays out uh anyways uh thank you for tuning in today uh and uh we will be back tomorrow Friday um I love showing you the past and um I love that you love watching the past so we'll see you soon if you like what you saw hit the thumbs up the like button you can
