thank you hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and that was it was a British educational film probably made in the late 20s early 30s called Battle of the plants lots of amazing time lapse photography in there and some drama some drama very much enjoy that um hey thanks for some of you for watching the very impromptu uh what was it 16 millimeter silent stock footage stream show which I started on Saturday early or late morning and ran until about 11 o'clock today I had 60 hours of footage and this was all the outtakes from the Coronet collection and not even all of them just 60 hours worth so we we did about 45 hours total and so I would periodically kind of check in to see how things were going some people loved it some people were like what's going on so uh yeah so anyways no reason for doing it just every once while I don't like to experiment and see what type of attention things get and and all that so um anyways and it was like an incredible mixed bag of stuff it was all over the place so thank you for tuning in on that so I'm going to try to get this scanner to thread up this film tension and we'll start watching it um did I actually call it the right thing I did not um this is one of the health-wise series so we know it's going to have a couple of things in it that we love slash hate one is um puppets two uh maybe a song or two so these could be candidates for a toe tapping tournament 2024 um by the way I have again reasserted that we are not going to compete with found footage Festival until they pay up for 2022 which might happen in the fall now so I'm still holding them to it but anyways we're gonna try this out let's see if this works it's been very uh ornery today uh and we're gonna try to do this before the storms come in because there's storms coming and so what we'll do is we will attempt Fate by actually after showing this I'll show you films about storms all right enjoy foreign [Music] such a Rags fetch the stick you silly mutt what you bring me a stupid cigarette for ah better Chuck it hmm I wonder what smoking's like maybe I should try it give me that kid it's mine I dropped it and your dumb dog ran off with it he didn't run far come here so out of breath smokers get short of breath real easy but never mind that's my last cigarette I need it kid your last you mean you're quitting sure sure I'm always quitting quit three times last week so why don't you quit for real give it a cigarette and I'll tell ya what's it like to smoke listen kid I took my first puff on my first cigarette when I was a kid like you made me feel dizzy and I nearly choked but I kept on anyway why because my friends did it and I thought it was grown up boy was I dumb now I'm ruining myself why don't you quit yeah sure tomorrow buddy boy I'll quit tomorrow gee why is it so hard to quit smoking I need to get the lowdown on this stuff and I know who'll give it to me when you think of how you're growing it should come as no surprise the more we learn about ourselves the more we realize [Music] and why there's lots of folks who'll help us grow we'll help ourselves because we know if we're happy and healthy too our bodies will do what we want them to it helps [Music] but the thing is Dr Jonas he said he was dumb to have started smoking and he kind of wanted to quit but like he couldn't sounds to me spinner like that guy was saying he wished he'd never started to smoke you see when he was young we didn't fully understand the dangers of smoking what smoking does to you have a look at this what happens when you smoke a cigarette this special picture is a smoker's hand the fingers are blue because his blood circulation is so poor and that's after just one smoking cigarettes affects you in many ways you don't always realize it right away but it's just not good for you this machine measures your heartbeat we won't have these kids smoke a cigarette but if they did the machine would show their hearts speeding up that's because of a drug in the tobacco does this man look like an athlete how many athletes have you ever seen smoking very few that's because smoking affects how much your body can do running for example a healthy kid can run fast and far but a person who smokes not nearly as well smoking affects your lungs and you can't breathe as well it's your choice and most kids today who know all the facts are turning down cigarettes so are adults who want to give themselves a chance too it's something to think about now if smoking's no good why don't people quit I mean that guy I met seemed like he couldn't quit once you start smoking spinner it's hard to stop because your body thinks it needs it and if your body doesn't get the effects of a cigarette it sends out urgent signals I want one I want one well this situation is called a dependence and the drug in the cigarette is what causes it I'm glad you said the word drug because I need to know about those too you mean stuff from a drugstore when you go with a piece of paper from your doctor and the only thing you can read on it is your name okay squirt I've had complaints about my writing before sort out what a drug is basically a drug is some substance you take into your body which makes your body change the drugs your doctor gives you are especially to cure an illness but you were talking about dependence like a drug you can't stop taking why can't you because your body has come to depend on the drug just to feel normal well why would anyone want to do a thing like that that's a very good question spinner and it's not an easy one to answer everyone growing up has to decide for themselves what to do about drugs and the best way to make a choice is to get the lowdown like you're doing you see drugs of one sort or another have been around as long as men maybe even as far back as the Stone Age thank you it's funny part of me feels like I I want to chase prehistoric squirrels and have lots of fun and another part of me feels I'm gonna flunk my Stone Age geography test tomorrow if I don't study then I I feel kind of lonely hi snorty no cut it out pterodactyl and no one knows that's my name how can I be a cool with it Triceratops with a nickname like snorty no sweat buddy boy you need to feel better about yourself and I got a secret for you what is that you see that plant you're almost stepping on plant drug plant so you don't know about drug plants where you've been drug plans make you feel so high ER than what hi meaning feeling good oh do they how what a dumbo you eat the leaves or smoke them or make a drink from them and it makes you feel so good and you look like you needed you mean they're gonna make me feel better about being me you'll feel like the greatest grooviest Triceratops That Ever Walked the swamp oh sounds terrific who am I to say no go to it snorty laughs click oh wow snorty is wonderful snort he can do anything [Music] why is snorty oh caveman my old body good to see ya hmm see snidy fly what's got into him it's this drug plant it's it's wonderful huh I'm terrific oh [ __ ] I had a good sleep snorty don't call me that it bugs me you wanna go hunting nah I'm gonna have some more of that drug plan hey wait a minute get out of my way what's that stuff doing to you makes me feel good listen I could see what effect that drug plant has on you it may have made you feel good for a bit but you weren't acting so great as you thought you were then you ate a lot and slept a lot now you're grouchy I'm not and you don't want to do anything except have more of that stupid plant if you think being like that is such a big deal go ahead it's up to you oh yeah well you see um no I don't want to be like that not me oh boy's story Let's Go Hunt Tyrannosaurus Rex why didn't the caveman just tell snorty not to do the drug thing well I don't like to be told what to do without a reason do you spinner no not much it makes me feel like a baby right by always telling people what to do we don't give them a chance to figure things out for themselves now taking any kind of drugs as the caveman said is up to you but how do you make up your mind it can be hard the best way to make a choice like this is to get as much information as you can talk to different people about it adults as well as your friends and then make your own decision I'm not always sure who to believe oh there's so much to find out sure but finding out is also fun and you get to know a whole lot of things and you two are terrific finding outers there's a lot to find out about drugs and every drug is different did you know alcohol is a drug many people drink a little with their meals it doesn't hurt them at all in fact it helps them relax and they enjoy the taste daddy will you please come out and play with me in the garden but some people let drinking interfere with their lives drinking becomes too important to them they ignore friends and family if I'll come soon I will I will don't work look I just couldn't see the tail end there isn't that much I'll be I'll be there I'll be there alcohol makes other people angry and upset they may not even know it or be able to stop they often don't realize they're hurting people they love living with people who drink too much can be very hard no matter how much you ask they sometimes can't stop when they made their decision about drugs it was a poor one for everybody what do you think about all that spinner what are you gonna do all I know is I'm too young now to fool around with any kind of drugs I'm just gonna carry on finding out about them me too I'm gonna ask my friends what they think hi spin hi Elliot you've been dealing with something heavy I've been finding out about smoking you ever tried it are you kidding how could I keep up with my sports and smoke too I'd be finished what would you do if someone asked you to try some other drugs what would you say I'd say man I'm not into body pollution don't you think they'd make fun of you when you said no I guess probably call me a nerd so what I tell them you'll have the hassle on that stuff boy not me neat answer sure helps to know what to say it ain't always easy spin but we're learning yeah I'm with you Elliot another nerd huh nerd snerd we got the smarts on them you bet let's go shoot some baskets ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha when you think of how you're growing it should come as no surprise the more we learn about ourselves [Music] no songs in that beyond the uh the title song that's kind of a downer I was expecting something um but uh what a wonderful way to talk about substance abuse uh all right so according to various weather forecasting things we have a big storm coming our way um the Midwest has suffered through it and now we will uh I hope nobody has been personally affected or friends or family of you have been personally affected by this but we're gonna just show something we're gonna show some films about storms and um it'll be ironic then if we are punished with a pretty horrible storm that um takes out our power internet or trees start falling on us um so we're going to start off with thunder and lightning case enjoy [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] was a wild place full of coyotes rattlesnakes Bandits were everywhere they think nothing of bushwhacking you on the road or even in town or anywhere for that matter and the gangs of course Mockingbirds didn't make life any easier but there was one gang that was more feared than any other in the west its deep were more shocking more terrible [Music] and more damages than any 10 games put together in fact the whole West shook whenever they heard the gang was in these parts not only the good guys but the bad guys as well there was no other gang like him no other gang so feared or so notorious as the lightning and thunder game they struck again and again now Prairie City had been struck by the gang plenty two maybe three dozen times anyhow enough the townsfolk figured it was time to put an end to it thunder and lightning throw them in the calaboos and throw away the keys wanted posters were put up all over the territory a posse was formed in the town's bravest soul after two in the path for a while they got down to business first they had to figure out who the gang really was how it operated and where it would strike next oh we're going to find them they're all such cowards the only strike during the storm this is gonna be a cakewalk when lightning and better see if they all shaking their boots it was obvious the Posse didn't know the first thing about lightning and thunder they are whipped your fellas are playing with Fire Bar who said that it was Mortimer Einstein Mortimer Prairie City's local boy scientists electricity to be exact electricity and it's dangerous unless you know a few simple safety rules during an electrical storm boy we're gonna catch them that's it all right and boys here's how we're gonna do it you see we challenge a gang to a door or never stand on High Ground during an electrical storm always stay low of course Mortimer was right during the lightning and thunderstorm the most important rule of safety is to avoid High Ground you should always stay on low ground not under attack and remain crouched as low as possible now the Posse didn't want to listen but they'd find out soon enough Mortimer had also tried to tell the Posse that during an electrical storm you should immediately drop all metal hockets fishing poles tennis racket golf clubs even take off golf shoes with cleats lightning is attracted to metal strike one wait it just got a flash so did we all what if we go down out of the water during an electrical storm Mortimer was right again you should always stay clear water during an electrical storm if you're in a boat crouched down as low as possible get under the deck if you can and stay away from the mass if you're swimming get out of the water immediately [Music] rips again I say it would crack them and they come into the okay salute be careful of lightning even if you're indoors during an electrical storm boy why Mortimer was right again during an electrical storm you should avoid open doors and wonders radiators sinks and stoves anything metal don't use plug-in electrical appliances and stay off the phone sometimes lightning can travel right through the wires to the phone in your hands lightning can be dangerous but there's nothing to be afraid of in an electrical storm if you know and follow Mortimer Einstein mortimer's few simple rules the Posse of course never learned a thing they tried again and again to catch lightning and thunder nothing they did seemed to work finally Mortimer couldn't stand the sight of scorched ignoramuses anymore the next time lightning and thunder showed he flew into action remember to keep safely away from the danger you're getting a pretty bad name around here and I know you could clear things up in a Flash oops lightning and thunder had to agree with Mortimer they hadn't met folks any harm they realize the best thing to do was to come down and help get the facts straight so the next time the Posse set out after lightning and thunder lo and behold they got lucky the notorious lightning and thunder game bring them up Spring them up Yahoo tweak their toes sit down yikes [Music] you just might see your Rainbow the trial did not go well for lightning and thunder since lightning could not speak and Thunderhead well a very limited vocabulary it soon appeared the gang's Goose was cooked talking yes yes wait your honor it was Mortimer again you don't understand lightning and thunder dams of armor should burn down my barn the crowd turned ugly but Mortimer continued what lightning and thunder did was quite natural and they'll do it again not if we have our way the crowd was not about to hear this kind of talk that is not until Mortimer flew into action you see basically lightning is a giant electrical spark electrical a flow of electricity that moves between clouds or between clouds in the earth once electricity got to do with any of this well your honor to understand lightning you have to understand something about electricity all matter you me a barn a tree is made up of atoms atoms consist of negatively charged particles of electricity called electron and positively charged particles called proton when an atom contains equal numbers of electrons and protons it is neutral when it adds some electron it becomes negatively charged when it loses some electrons it becomes positively charged clouds what does all this have to do with clouds clouds like all matter carry an electrical charge how do they become electrically charged scientists believe this results from the rise and fall of water within a cloud a cloud is made up of billions of water droplets as the heavier droplets fall they split into larger and smaller drops the larger drops become negatively charged and fall to the bottom of the cloud the smaller drops become positively charged and are carried by air currents to the top of the cloud well what's the importance of an electrically charged Cloud not until the cloud passes close to an object with an opposite charge like the Earth that's when a basic rule of electricity comes into play opposites a track that is to create any flow of electricity you need two atoms or objects with opposite charges positive and negative atoms and all other objects with the same sort of chart repel one another so you're saying the Earth in a cloud must be charged oppositely before any flow of electricity can happen yes when the negatively charged bottom of the cloud comes close enough to the Earth which is positively charged during an electrical storm the spark of electricity which we call lightning results can lightning pass between the positive and negative sections of a cloud absolutely Opposites Attract will lightning always happen whenever charged clouds come near the Earth no layers of air are often strong enough to insulate or act as a barrier between the positive and negative poles thus keeping the electrical charges we call lightning from ever developing sounds to me like lightning was just going balance every day business how come lightning hit my barn now my neighbor your neighbor protected his property with a lightning rod that's just a device for guiding the flow of electrical current safely see how it's attached so that it's higher than the rest of the building travels down the side and into the ground that's because lightning always strikes the highest positively charged object in the area it will avoid the building hit the metal rod and flow harmlessly into the ground what about that little loud mouth how come it scared my little girl it didn't mean to Thunder's quite harmless just loud a lightning flash heats the surrounding air the heated air expands and collides with the cooler air setting up sound waves that we call Thunder it's that natural Mortimer summed up his case by admitting that lightning was dangerous and thunder was sometimes frightening like playing with fire but the people who understand these natural happenings can protect themselves and their property by following a few Simple Rules don't stand on a trees on high Rhino don't stay in the water stay low during the lightning storm moreover Mortimer pointed out two very good things lightning does it causes chemical changes in the air that create nitrates these are important to helping plants grow so we can use them for food lightning also creates OZO a gas that forms a layer high above the Earth and protects us from some of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays charging dismissed lightning and thunder were very pleased the people cheered and although they thought better of shaking hands with lightning or even slapping them on the back lightning and thunder understood their sentiments exactly to show there were no hard feelings lightning and thunder that very night put on a natural display of fireworks the likes of which Prairie City had never before seen it goes without saying that Mortimer Einstein Mortimer was made Prairie City's weatherman its first official Act was to distribute lightning rod to everyone in town said that my friends is the true table of the case against lightning and thunder and you told back someone's out to do and Dynamics it gives me such a nasty rash and when I hear the heavens Roar it makes me sink right to the floor [Music] Champion it seems like uh it was pretty good so maybe that's a health-wise let us down today but uh thunder and lightning case uh brought us back uh all right speaking of storms uh we have this film which is called storm and it's about a storm and hopefully this is not triggering to anybody who's just survived a storm or in recent memory has survived a storm but it is one of those uh I don't know if this is made by um National Weather Service or if this is you know if this is a federal government uh project or what the deal is I don't have that information handy but it does set up all the drama so here it is storm enjoy [Music] it was only a minor hurricane AIDS first of the Season losing steam before it crossed the Florida coast hurricane winds yielding rapidly to rain as it headed North toward Georgia and the Carolinas and downgraded even before it reached the Appalachians into nothing more than a tropical storm next day over North Carolina the storm picks up speed intensity crosses Virginia's Great Dismal Swamp and then sweeps out the sea at Norfolk gone and ready to be forgotten [Music] then Agnes surprises changes her mind suddenly she Loops Inland again over New York State meets a low pressure front from Lake Erie begins swinging like a giant wheel with Pennsylvania as the Hub and torrential rains start falling [Music] from the flood forecasting Center at Harrisburg widespread small stream flooding is expected tonight throughout the Susquehanna Basin including the Juniata and West Branch main channels are well below flood levels and no mainstream flooding is expected at this time 90 miles north at the Luzerne County Courthouse in Wilkes-Barre three men meet in the Emergency Operating Center General Frank townen the county civil defense director John McCormick is Deputy some Street flooding and their executive director Nick sugik just small strains if you picture any special problems only the levy at Plymouth we still have a gap down there from the sewer line collapse okay let's get it filled in now you know I've got to go down to that memorial service on the Jersey Shore tomorrow night but I'll keep checking back with you 200 miles south in the nation's capital workmen are sandbagging the Washington Monument grounds against the rising Potomac just across the river in northern Virginia flash flooding on small streams is beginning to drive hundreds from their homes [Music] tonight fires are breaking out with firemen often unable to reach them foreign [Music] bulletin from the U.S weather service at Harrisburg Thursday June 22nd severe local flooding is occurring in the Harrisburg area and the rain is continuing and near disaster conditions are developing locally many families are being evacuated driving is hazardous and will continue so into this morning on his way to Jersey a worried Frank townend stops on the road checks back with Nick suchic it's getting critical General Harrisburg is predicting a 24-foot crest for tomorrow and it could get worse rain okay Nick I'll come back um got the 109th alerted for that Patrol on the dikes and you better get in plenty of coffee and sandwiches in Virginia rivers are rising rapidly toward full flood [Music] [Music] on the old CNO Canal just north of Washington two youngsters decide to go sightseeing in a canoe are Swept Away into a Grove of trees rescue workers fire a line across the street begin trying to pull them to safety thanks that's the uh the tower won't make it through the tree but this foreign [Music] foreign [Music] bulletin for 9 30 p.m Thursday June 22nd record or near record stages are being forecast through the entire Susquehanna River Valley to Wanda Pennsylvania 25.8 feet and Rising Wilkes-Barre 20.6 feet in Rising Sunbury 26.2 feet in Rising Williams by evening Frank townend is back in Wilkes-Barre his entire staff mobilized for emergency duty at County Courthouse with that newscaster Dave de Cosmo serving as liaison between civil defense and the local broadcasting stations now reporting full-time on the growing crisis a dike in Plymouth that was never quite repaired after some mine subsidences causing very bad problems there thank you at 11 o'clock General a gap in the levy can't be raised above 32 feet that's serious the forecast now is for 34 feet that means we have to evacuate the people in Plymouth John here's what I want you to do go down to Plymouth and check with Burns and with George Davenport on the evacuation if you're in Plymouth or in those low-lying areas get out now Plymouth must be evacuated you do have time don't panic but please leave now everybody else everybody and in the Emergency Operating Center new record stages on the West Branch below renovo are resulting from the record rains of the last 48 hours on the North Branch of tuwanda and wilkesbury Crest stages will exceed all previous records by six to eight feet I um I'm still skeptical it seems to me there's something wrong up here how about this 40-foot forecast I don't quite believe it Jack this is Nick the river elevations at Towanda indicate that they're going to get about 33 feet if this is true we're going to get about 40 feet down here God if this happens we're going to get clobbered we hope this is a mistake will you please check this with flood forecasting at Harrisburg and get back to me as soon as possible the question is relayed through state civil defense and quickly confirmation comes back big trouble Upstream Wilkes-Barre will face it tomorrow okay gentlemen here's the situation now the forecast is for 40 feet at some time around 10 o'clock to noon this morning so we've got to get people out there and work on the dikes get them build up as high as we can with the hope that we may be able to hold it now we're pretty pessimistic and if white is right we're not going to hold it but it's better to try than not to do anything about it the other thing we've decided is this that we're not going to notify the people to get out until morning Twilight we don't want to take people and put them out in the streets in the pitch black right now where they won't know what's coming or what's happening so this announcement is going to come out to the general public at five o'clock now in the meantime we're gonna get the contractors and the gravel piles and the sand piles and the sandbags stored along the dike so that we can work much more rapidly as soon as we get the people out after five o'clock we're gonna have to send back delivery both sides of the river we're gonna need 100 trucks Addie sandbags paper bags plastic anything you've got that'll hold sand put this material on your porch and turn your porch light on I want 50 tons of sand at the raw Street pumping station and I want it there by 5 A.M [Music] at four in the morning a four foot wall of water sweeps over the dikes at Corning New York and 17 people died the Chemung River rages on down through Elmira Horseheads painted posts flooding them all on down to the Susquehanna [Applause] flash flooding has put a bulge in the river at Harrisburg too and River rescue crews are pulling victims out of the water welcome for sure how long do you think you could stay there well let's put it this way I've been here a little over 48 years rosberg are actually a little longer 5 a.m first flight townend goes on the air with the public warning this is very bad news for Wyoming Valley we don't want to scare anybody but the time is important the forecast now is that the river is going to be higher than the dykes that it's actually going to get to a crest of about 40 feet sometime between 8 o'clock and noon today there's a possibility that we may contain it but it's only a possibility now the important thing is to get out of the low areas but the next thing is this we want volunteers to work on the dike loser and County civil defense is asking for ten thousand volunteers to assemble along the banks of the Susquehanna at 5 a.m Towing shovels wear your old clothes be prepared to work to try and contain the river meet at the Riverbanks we need approximately 10 000 people [Music] foreign the time for sandbagging is passed Harrisburg [Music] thank you [Music] Wilkes-Barre is still holding out but barely a very important announcement here the sightseers please leave East Market Street tags are getting pretty bad now and what they don't need is you hanging around water is creeping up on the courthouse backing up through the sewers flooding the sub-basement and the emergency control center the civil defense staff is forced to relocate upstairs [Music] at 10 30 another warning this is General town and the civil defense at the courthouse now if you haven't evacuated by now you've got to get out we're having trouble at the Riverside Drive area in Old River Road right now the rivers at the level of the dice and it's pretty close to going over in the areas in Wilkes-Barre we expect to have to blow the sirens pretty soon to call the people off the work on the dike as of now we're still holding and hoping an extreme emergency exists in the Wyoming Valley with emphasis heavy emphasis in the Wilkes-Barre area starting to lose the battle with the bike at any time at 10 after 11 John McCormick reports from the riverfront General I'm down here on Riverside Drive and as it now looks we've had to clear it the water is coming over that's all we can do the city Waits foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] keep your head about you there are plenty of people around to help you out you have places to stay you will have food you will have bedding you will have everything so don't panic just get yourself to safety as quickly as possible [Music] unbelievable South wilkesbury completely inundated with water you can't even see a road a side road an alley a back street or a backyard water is resting at the first floor many of many of the homes in the South wilkesbury section all it is is Buddy Susquehanna Wilkes-Barre police anyone who has a boat requested to bring it to the police department 80 000 people have been evacuated safely thanks to the warnings but a few stragglers still remain votes off and down South Main Street here are shouting in uh make a way out of this what's turning out to be a real crisis situation for the South Wilkes Ferry still depends calls on the naval Reserve Center at the airport for help okay Tower this is maybe control what is the whereabouts of your beaver aircraft for firefighting we'll need all aircraft the vicinity of downtown Wilkes-Barre they can't get any energy calls for help keep pouring in we have a report report of four people on a rooftop corner of church and Rudder Kingston Kingston okay get Tower I think we have an hs2 aircraft working the Wyoming area uh Roger Tower is going to free him up I need him to Rudder in church for a pickup for four people on a rooftop oh [Music] [Music] father Jordan it looks like he announces at St Jude's Mountaintop has facilities and shelter for people who need a place to stay up in the Mountaintop area and you'll find plenty of food shelter what have you right there across shelters are now open at the gar High School Grand Rapids and Lehigh the East End primitive Church Kidder Street the Army Reserve Center is it fun or is it bad is it sad she has a different attitude well she's young she don't understand what it's all about but it's a sad thing you know losing everything that you have like that [Music] by Nightfall there's no longer a river and a valley the river has become the valley all the great rivers are in full flood the Susquehanna the schoolfield the Allegheny and the upper Ohio and engineer the James the city of Richmond is deep Underwood its second flood of the century in just three years but this time the civil defense planning and preparation that followed Hurricane Camille will cut the death tolls from 151 dead or missing in that earlier disaster to just 13 in this one thank you and wiltspera still flooded out foreign [Music] across the river so are Kingston Plymouth 44. Kingston Mr ball of its 6600 homes only 20 are still above water with water ringing the courthouse the Emergency Center has moved again to a school board building on a hill across town established that the civilian defense centers away we're going to do already General townen has called a meeting of local leaders to coordinate their efforts in the weeks ahead at the meeting now they've got engineers and medical Fire Chiefs please military the Red Cross we've got County officials and we've got City bureau and Township officials found this question of curfews we're going to have to keep people out of those areas that were flooded now Bob do you think we've got enough military here to to be able to accomplish that yes sir we have 400 men from the 109th artillery that we can put on the street and we have another Battalion on the way in to take care of the East Side help from the outside is on the way to the military with men equipment supplies every available helicopter within flying distance Army Navy Air Force coast guards is being called in for emergency service and planes are pouring in with thousands of tons of supplies two main distribution points are established too one at the airport the other at the Pocono Downs Racetrack in Wilkes-Barre food clothing Emergency Equipment of every kind we have a generator up at Pocono the generator is 25 KW generators for retreat Hospital control Navy control where's your Chinook working right single point suspension it's the generator [Music] finally the flood is gone leaving fish flopping in the streets of Kingston and everywhere Monk sour stinking mug [Music] downtown the trash goes out by the Tongue while people with nothing picked through the mess trying to salvage something suddenly going homes become a bitter thing when I first opened the door this was the first the worst moment of all you see everything topsy-turvy where it floated up to the ceiling and then down again and it is a real horror people are just now beginning to realize just exactly how little they have left when you see that yellow stuff pouring right through a beautiful home well I'm telling you what break your heart really break your heart in Lucerne County alone more than 10 000 homes have been under a dozen feet of water only two had flood insurance and rebuilding seems an overwhelming task we don't want to give it up but you can only do so much and just how much can a human being's body take and how much of a mental strain can they take at the same time worrying about what they're going to do and uh Where Do We Go From Here you need a little bit of help we need a lot of help we need help now I mean it isn't a little Cricket overflowed it's a whole valley that's destroyed I have six more years to go on the mortgage how are you going to how are you going to get the money to rebuild that is undetermined as yet I have to wait and see what the federal government's going to give what the state government's going to give if they're going to give anything help of every kind is needed and many are too old too sick to walk very far to find it to meet the emergency hundreds of federal and state disaster workers are rushed in Disaster Assistance centers are set up to provide One-Stop service one place where people can come for whatever they need emergency medical health mops and brooms for cleanup food stamps Surplus Foods legal assistance unemployment insurance re-employment Aid small business loans on generous terms other loans to rebuild ruined homes and replace lost personal possessions at extremely low interest and for those who've literally lost everything house trailers rent free for a year in the year ahead the federal government will spend more than three billion dollars for Relief and reconstruction Wilkes-Barre has been hardest hit of all and so the White House sends a special representative Frank Colucci born in this town to organize and speed the rescue effort and the Army Corps of Engineers will have its work cut out removing millions of tons of debris helping the Department of Housing and Urban Development set up trailer Villages for the homeless building temporary spans over smaller streams [Music] [Applause] it's on the walls it's done everything a match to it all ladies with hair dryers and the Wilkes-Barre Kingston area are urged to contact the telephone company they are needed to dry out delicate electronic equipment so service can be restored I don't see where they're going to live here for at least three to six months at least the smell has got to dry out it stinks in here that's something smell that I bet you'll be glad when this is all over huh oh I I certainly am a man kind of took a beating didn't you we certainly did did you lose everything in the house everything from top to bottom just a little of our roof was sticking out front wheel man is somehow we're thankful for the years that we did have we can remember them maybe you know just the kids had a chance now it would be all right in time the mud will dry into dust with no improvement sick choking clouds of dust that have to be hosed down washed away for many it's been a total disaster well again I thank God for a man like General Tannen who made the decision when he did to evacuate the area otherwise there would have been hundreds of lives lost did you have any idea anything like this would ever happen never I never thought I'd see the water come over that dike I think it'll happen again oh yes I do oh yeah [Music] and now the question is get out or go on I'm definitely leaving I like the neighborhood I like the people that I live around but once is an experience comes down to the tragedy of walking in the scene what's left of a lifetime terrible experience terrible feeling you've lost everything so let it go you know that attitude changes every day when you come back you find well maybe there is a chance and you get a little more hope each day we're gonna stay we're like old General MacArthur I will return yes sir we're going to stay [Music] am I just tempting Fate by showing a film about flooding um it's it's possible uh the uh I was just looking to see when the Apple shop flood happened and I believe it was almost a year ago I think we're maybe it was July um and they're still reeling from it it was basically five feet of water in their archive uh the way that that our archive is set up we actually have uh the land kind of goes down so there's stuff in the basement that we're working on getting out of the basement and working on a way to waterproof that but also to maybe raise things up a little bit so that if we do get flooding in the back um it will just lap at our foundation and not seep in and damage films because that has happened in the past we have over the years the AV Geeks archive has succumbed to uh hurricane damage specifically Hurricane Fran and Floyd came and did some damage and then we had some water flooding here at the this current space um that took out I don't know some films so it was water is always something it's it's always something to deal with um but anyways maybe today's storm won't be that bad so I'm knocking on scanner um I hope you guys had a a great show and had a great weekend and so we're back again we will be back again on Tuesday and we'll watch some more films and uh everybody take care if there is significant rain or tornadoes in your area please pay attention and don't get caught don't get hurt don't get flooded uh we will see you tomorrow take care
