for is in is is brings the world to you um and I wish I had the soundtrack with that film that was uh edited and released my castle films uh for home distribution and most home projectors didn't have sound abilities so um what they would do is put in inner titles for things things and they would license from news reels they would license from feature films that they would cut down to to scenes uh they' license from cartoons sometimes they would shoot their own original content Eugene Castle would do that but uh most of the time it was something that they had licensed um I'm skip alimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show uh rest in peace Willie Ma I wish I had some footage of him I was looking through all my baseball footage from around the time that he played and uh I don't I don't have any that at least that I've identified I mean we've only seen a small portion of the films that we have so he might show up at some point uh and also James chance um if you don't know about James chance and the contortions uh that early uh New York punk stuff he was awesome was really phenomenal um look him up on uh YouTube uh anyways today's also juneth and I have looked to see if I have anything that actually talks about juneth and I don't um so I have this film which was shown in the 70s ' 80s I I didn't look at the copyright it's Encyclopedia Britannica and it's black people in the slaved South 1850 and it explains why juneth was so important so here it is [Music] one day in 1795 a cotton planter in nachas Mississippi entertained a traveler from Georgia the occasion was a pleasant one and it was to have astonishing consequences the visitor had brought a rough sketch of Eli Whitney's cotton gin invented 2 years before the planter asked his slave to build a working model in this way the labor saving cotton gin was introduced into Mississippi it was to bring about a social and economic upheaval at that time near the start of the 19th century Mississippi was considered the Wild Frontier of the cotton Kingdom its Chief crops were Indigo and tobacco its largest settlement was Naches with a population of 9,000 of this number 3500 were slaves the plantations in the nachas region were surrounded by the Wilderness where Indians the cre the CH and the Naches still made their home gradually as the cotton gin came into widespread use Indigo and tobacco were replaced on the big plantations planters concentr ated on raising cotton and nothing else by the 1830s a flood of immigrants moved in to settle new areas of the fertile land acquired by treaty from the Indians soon there arose an enormous demand for cheap labor the demand was met by the large-scale importation of [Music] blacks by 1850 slaves outnumbered whites in Mississippi and by ible numbers in the cotton lands along the major rivers the Planter's Mania for land and slaves would not pass one writer predicted till Mississippi becomes one vast cotton field by 1860 most of the South's wealth money land and slave labor was invested in raising cotton [Music] the barter and trading of slaves was constant and merciless Mississippi Planters often bought slaves in New Orleans the world's leading market for cotton and black gold many Traders east of the Appalachian shipped them down the Atlantic coast to markets near Naas slaves in the interior were shipped down the Mississippi this was a dread fate for it usually meant working in the rice swamps [Music] a Trader might plan to sell a family as a group but he would seldom refuse an offer to sell a husband a wife or a child alone let us observe what might befall one skilled slave after he had been separated from his family as a trained servant he would have an easier life than most slaves but away from his family he would have no real peace as a house servant with special skills he would live in the big house and would be encouraged to feel superior to the field hands he would dress and eat well and he might sometimes get to leave to visit his wife if she were sold to a nearby Plantation this was Plantation life in a frontier setting quite different from the gracious life of the Old South but the plantation was still a self-supporting Community even if many luxuries and traditions were Ming the success of any Plantation depended on many different types of Labor and slaves provided most of the skilled labor in the south [Music] the field hands assigned to a whole gang and a plow gang were the backbone of the Planter's Workforce the white overseer was boss of the work gangs and manager of the plantation responsible for the care conduct and work of the slaves field hands lived in a different world from that of the servants in the big house the regular working hours of a field hand were from sunrise to sunset during Harvest time he would often work from dawn until 9 at night during most of his day every move he made was watched the overseer's word was law and the driver's weip enforcement 30 lashes or more was common punishment for slow or careless work for Disobedience or impudent Behavior the daily routine of threats and whippings was balanced with small rewards for good behavior a pass to visit town on Sunday dancing parties on holidays and at the end of the harvest season Gifts of money or food at Christmas [Music] on most plantations the rations of clothing and food were barely adequate for basic needs almost always coarse and plain for each slave the usual ration of food was a peck of cornmeal and 3 or 4 pounds of bacon or salt pork a week a year's supply of clothing was two summer suits two winter suits a straw hat and a wool hat and two pairs of shoes most field hands lived in one room log cabins that were drafty barely furnished and overcrowded by 1860 Mississippi's black population outnumbered Whites by more than 880,000 many Planters thought of their slaves as valuable but uh dangerous property to protect the white population the state organized a patrol system to police the conduct of slaves local citizens were drafted to patrol the highways to arrest slaves without passes and to uh break up illegal meetings Mississippi Planters still haunted by the memory of Nat Turner's Revolt were alarmed in the 1850s by John Brown's raids in Kansas and by the growing Fury of the anti-slavery movement in the major cities of the north pro-slavery leaders ERS had long carried on a campaign to convince the public that slavery was good for the South and even good for black people they argued that nature intended blacks to be common laborers physically strong but mentally dependent on white people George Fitz Hugh a popular proslavery writer said that slaves were the happiest the freest people in the world Fitz Hugh and other writers compared the Carefree life of the slave with the hard life of factory workers in the North Mississippi slaves had no way to protest or change the system but they did plan ways to resist and escape a slave could play the role of a perfect [ __ ] The Humble childlike devoted servant while stting to run away he could pretend illness or stupidity to avoid an unwanted job he could steal damage or destroy his master's property he could express his Yearning For Freedom in wonderful songs didn't my Lord deliver Daniel and why not every man he could take his chances with forged papers on the road or run away and live like a hunted animal in the swamp in a few more years the black people of Mississippi would be free but their lives would not be greatly changed the old cruelties of slavery and inequality would continue for a long time Mississippi would remain a completely segregated Society for more than a hundred years [Music] sorry apologize about that um you know when I say like that could have been a film strip it was a film strip so they based a film they made a Motion Picture film uh out of a film strip The Stills and the artwork that was made uh for a film strip uh so that would have been shown with little beeps um interesting it made 1971 so uh that's how we educated young people and I'm hoping that young people still get this message but I'm afraid in some areas they don't so we'll just keep holding on to these films and showing them uh we just have to get young people to kind of tune in and watch what we're doing um let's learn about chemistry in a changing World enjoy [Music] for centuries men have tried to combine known substances to make new substances The Alchemist hope to make gold from baser [Music] Metals later when magic incantations gave way to a genuine Scientific Method Man learned to create new substances from known ones which were far more valuable than [Music] gold the marbles of chemistry today are far beyond the dreams of The Alchemist of the past today through the science of chemistry man can make sugar from sawdust cheese from peanuts hoser from coal or Plastics from soybeans [Music] no matter where we live or what we do every day some phase of chemistry affects each one of us directly the purity of our drinking water is assured by chemical analysis the pharmacist who fills our prescriptions is applying chemical principles chemistry has given us better soaps better paints [Music] better petroleum products synthetic rubber Plastics Motion Picture film nylon explosives and a 100 other things we use in our everyday life [Music] discovering and bringing to the world the wonders of History requires teamwork among many types of C all with different jobs and in different Departments of a company this teamwork can best be observed in the development of a widely used chemical product here a chemical company is planning to manufacture Elemental phosphorus the management asks the research Department to develop a process that is commercially practical research is usually conducted by a group of several men who work under the supervision of a leader after explaining the problems involved in making phosphoric acid from phosphate Rock the project leader makes specific assignments two of the assistants are instructed to read all available literature related to the subject reading technical literature which deals with similar experiments conducted by others in the past is an important part of research another member of the research team will start on analytical methods often it takes many months even years of very careful work with numerous failures until the group finally develops a practical process in the laboratory here during the pre-pilot stage chemists work out a practical method of obtaining the concentrated phosphoric acid at this point the idea is taken over by the plant Development Department its job is to devise methods for commercial production at this stage a research chemical engineer builds a pilot plant a miniature which duplicates the parts and materials to be used in in the final plant while operating a pilot plant the Specialists face production problems on the spot and solve them before the commercial production starts next the design chemical engineer takes over and starts plans for the building of the actual commercial plant he must choose a location with due consideration to the proximity of power the availability of raw materials and the conditions for economical distribution once a location is decided upon the design chemical engineer prepares a flow sheet showing how materials will pass through the plant next a flow sheet of Machinery to handle the raw materials and then an architectural blueprint of the plant once the plant is built and in operation the chemical engineer remains in charge until the Personnel becomes experienced enough to operate it themselves with production started there is Need for another kind of chemist the analytical chemist it is the job of the standards department and its analytical chemists to maintain a constant vigilance over materials and products in every stage of production to make sure that proper quality is maintained part of their job is analyzing repres resentative samples taken at Key production points the first control of the standards department is evident in the selection of raw materials here phosphate rock is mined and hauled to the plant [Music] then it is washed and graded according to [Music] sides next the phosphate Matrix is waved and mixed with Coke and sand then the mixture goes through a centering machine which ignites it using the mixture into larger particles these are broken up and screamed for size after Coke is added the mixture goes to a giant furnace where electrodes heat it to a very high temperature the heat causes the phosphorous Vapor to pass off continuously these Vapors are condensed and led to storage [Music] tanks from the storage tanks the elemental phosphorus is loaded into tank cars that go to other Factories at these factories the El elal phosphorus is converted into a series of phosphate compounds the phosphates are used as fertilizers in refining sugar in detergents and indenes and other uses meanwhile in the research laboratory of the phosphorus plant chemists have devised uses for byproducts of the process at regular intervals the residue from the furnace is removed part of this residue calcium silicate is used as a roaded material it is run off into a pool where it solidifies and cracks [Music] up another byproduct ferof phosphorus is run into molds and cooled it is used to improve the properties of steel the story of the production of Elemental phosphorus is an example of only one of a great number of Industries in which chemicals play a vital part through the constant work of chemists more and more of the Earth's raw materials are transformed into useful products products that fill needs raise our living standard and change our pattern of [Music] Life As for the future it is almost beyond the imagination to conceive what other wonders will be unveiled as the advancing strides of chemistry meet the needs of a changing world [Music] science science I have some Klondike Bar on me uh let's see what else we got coming up um we've shown other films in this series a big fan of it it's the youth uh World culture and youth this is yangzong uh peasant painter of China enjoy [Music] the [Music] oh no what bad [Music] rock my name is Nia schwen and I'm 15 years old now I'll be ready for my art class and I might get sent home I even in China one of the largest countries in the world and my Village in central China is called hushen and is famous all over the world for the beautiful paintings done by our peasants and workers [Music] Roy teacher Shaw hasn't noticed I'm rate since I was six I've attended these summer art classes and met out to me each year two special classes are held one for children and one for advanced painters to help continue our peasant painting tradition and our teachers are wellknown peasant painters peasant painting in hushen first started at a reservoir construction site in 1958 when a few farmers and workers had the idea of painting the work in progress to record the great happening slly this became an art form and soon Village walls were decorated with beautiful murals of our everyday life to inspire and teach each other how to build and improve our country now there's even an enormous gallery to show visitors our work and many men women and even children paint whenever they have time my father says we not only create Beauty but also help to build China of course we're just beginners but I love drawing and especially learning from peasant painters themselves now that the summer Harvest is over and they have time to teach us this afternoon we're going to visit the advanced class after we finish our assignments [Music] I've always had trouble drawing people in action so they feel alive teacher fan has been working with me and says even a tiny line in the right right place can make a ball roll or a body [Music] move teacher fan is one of the original peasant painters of [Music] hushan teacher fan suggests I might improve my drawing of people in action by sketching the workers restoring the pagot and our fitted Square I think it's a good [Music] [Music] idea teacher sh has special announcement for us he says we're going to have a class competition and seven of our paintings will be chosen to hang in The hoan Peasant painting Gallery he asks us first if we are all interested and of course the answer is yes we all know it would be an honor to have one of our paintings chosen we often visit the advanc class to to observe and learn more from the master peasant painters and see how their work takes [Music] shape besides being an excellent artist Le qu is an expert on Rice crops is a village T and now likes painting flowers and [Music] scenery and Jang is one of the best painters in hen teacher tadin G Tang instructs the advanced class he's 45 and it was he who actually started the peasant painting of hen in [Music] 1958 I live with my mother father and sister in a small two room house my father U is an industrial manager on a commune 1 half hour away by train my mother Yu Jun is principal of a prom school and my sister Shia gin is 9 years old we see my father on weekends and this Saturday we're going to Dad's commun for their Harvest Festival [Music] [Music] [Applause] show [Music] [Applause] show show you something [Music] stand now [Music] [Music] I've decided to enter my pagota drawing in the competition though I've been back several times I still can't seem to catch the motion of the workers I've decided to ask my aunt Yin Jing for help her Village is 5 kilm from town and right now I wish I had a bike like my dad's [Applause] [Music] la [Music] my aunt Yin Jing is 64 and a famous peasant painter she says in any kind of art inspiration is most important and if I concentrate on what people feel my pen will make their movements and even their dedication come at Al you go [Music] my Pagoda is coming along well and the deadline is today I don't know if he's good enough and sometimes I get confused about painting my parents want me to be an architect but I don't know [Music] seeing the gallery paintings gives me confidence that people can do anything even move mountains if they want to [Music] my pagot isn't quite finished and I know it can be better [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] teacher Shaw says the results will be announced by the gallery committee after the weekend he says anyone who's not ready can hand in their work this evening I'm relieved because it gives me time to finish and in the morning we leave from my father's commun and the Harvest [Music] Festival you [Music] you never [Music] speeech foree spee [Music] [Music] I really admire my parents they're always very Ling and gentle with us and I wish we could be together more but it's impossible until my father finishes his work at the commune and that might be two more [Music] years fore speee spee spee [Music] don't [Music] here [Music] can't [Music] [Music] a [Music] [Music] go [Music] well this is it teacher Shaw says the committee had a hard time selecting all of our work was good [Music] you [Applause] that how exciting to have our drawings hanging with the work of Master peasant painters teacher Shaw says there's more exciting news the advanced class has invited all of us to join them tomorrow morning for an Excursion to a bridge building site where we can actually sketch the people working [Applause] I [Music] I know I I love [Music] [Music] [Music] woman [Music] come [Music] hey I go [Music] [Music] this worker says my sketch is good but not quite right and just when I thought I was doing so well he says experience is the best teacher and instead of sketching why don't I help him work [Music] I guess if I really want to be a peasant painter I must get inspiration by working as a peasant does and learn to feel what I paint [Music] not [Music] oh yeah we have we have more of these um in our collection that we've been scanning and uh try to show you more it's kind of these little little narratives little challenges um you know probably incredibly fictional um and I don't even know if the narrator is of Chinese origin um but behind me I have a film scanner and we got a film we're going to watch cuz that's what we do is we watch films this is all about fire [Music] see that nice little house across the street everything peaceful and secure right wrong there's going to be a fire big explosion I'd say it's bound to happen anytime now oh my name's Murphy and that's my house I sure hate to see it go but I guess it's too late to save it it was only a year ago that I moved in there that was the same day the Wilsons were moving in it seems like just yesterday I was new in the neighborhood myself the first time I saw Joe and Kathy they sure had a lot of stuff but you know after sizing up the situation I realized they were missing something important hey hi cat that's what they were missing me Cy is there any more trash we can burn in here there's some out by the garage they were too busy to pay much attention to me so I just kind of made myself at home Cy do you want to get rid of these magazines and old rags while we're at it what old rags here these Joe those are my sweaters oh suddenly the fire got out of hand oh No Cathy call the police what for what happened fire fire get some water Kathy the whole place is on fire what do we do what do we do it's a good thing the Kid Next Door know what to do hello fire department there's a fire at 11165 pickle Avenue the nearest cross street is tuna drive and my telephone number is 555 3 21 where wow did we Panic that's one of the worst things you can do when there's a fire for or is it on your city hello hello anybody there somebody help well Joe called a lot of people and finally got hold of the Department of Water and Power what do you mean you can't help me you've got plenty of water haven't you just as the fire department got here thanks to the kit next door Joe finally got the right telephone number okay Johnson let's take a line in the front Rosen get some water on the roof and hit those Sparks and Gonzalez check out the backat those firemen got right in there and kept the fire from spreading by the time I got to look inside it was out the fire could have been prevented if there had been a screen in front of the fireplace and you know you shouldn't burn trash in your fireplace Captain Roberts also explained that we needed a spark arrester that's a screen that fits over the top of the chimney to keep Sparks from escaping then he noticed a few other fire hazards first there was all that trash that was piled up against the garage he said that was fuel for a fire and it should be put in metal trash containers next he pointed out something really dangerous Joe had left a can of gasoline open in the garage where the water heater is he said that the flame from the water heater could have ignited the gasoline fumes and caused a big explosion especially if the can had tipped over and spill he also said that gasoline should be kept in a safety can with a round bottom so it couldn't tip over and spill and that it should be stored as far away as possible from any ignition Source such as a heater they promised Captain Roberts they'd be more careful about things like that and sure enough things settle down for a while until a couple of months later at the housewarming party ha some party couldn't move couldn't hear and I've smelled better air in a garbage can then to make matters worse the lights went out I got stepped on twice hey how something bit me Kathy where are the fuses fuses I I don't know uh go look in the fuse box box oh rats never a fuse around when you need it n this Penny will hold it until I get some fuses using a penny for a fuse didn't sound right to me well the lights went on again and so did the party I thought it would never end they drop cigarettes and they spill drinks all over the place great party [Music] Joe wow will you look at this mess we'll clean it up in the morning come on Joe it's awfully late and I'm tired I I'll be right in I just want to empty the ash trays oh look at these Burns Joel must have filled up three paper bags with cigarette butts and trash Kathy who used the paper cups for an ash tray there's a big burn on the dining room table people are sure careless well finally Joel finished up and we headed for the bedroom I figured we were all going to get some sleep but I figured wrong Kathy oh my gosh Kathy look what you've done Kathy wake up you've burned a hole in the covers okay yeah all right first thing in the morning I'll do it then right well things finally settle down and we all got to [Music] sleep suddenly something woke me up something was wrong I couldn't figure out what it was so I went to investigate that was it all those cigarette butts Joe had dumped into the trash had caught fire Joe and Kathy were still sound asleep I knew they'd never smell the smoke I had to do something hey what Murthy what's going on why you rotten cat what's a big idea Joe what happened what's all the rocket out there smoke hey something's burning it's a fire Cy look it's a fire don't get excited Don't Panic just stay calm everything's under control open the door the door open the door Joe sure was embarrassed if the firemen were here again a Kathy you didn't have to call the fire department I could have handled this little fire myself Kathy was right calling us was the right thing to do even a small fire can get out of hand in a big hurry and don't go running with something burning try to put the fire out where it is is Joel promised Captain Roberts he'd be more careful and he was until one day last August that was the day his nephew Bobby was visiting that kid he was as curious as a cat like all of us he wanted to find out about everything then Bobby got curious about the matches that made me a little nervous and pretty soon H I found out why food's ready Bobby now where'd he go there you are what are you doing with those matches you know you could burn yourself with those say you know what we used to do when we were kids here watch this where is everybody the hamburgers are getting burned oops uh we better get back Bobby well we were halfway through our hamburgers when we heard the fire engines coming I wonder what that's all about that sounds like they're stopping right in front again well it was hard to believe but we had another fire on our hands our fence went up in flames and sorted our neighbor's garage a total loss any idea how this fire started Joe I guess we shouldn't have been playing with those matches huh Uncle Joe I see two kids playing with matches ages four and uh you're 34 aren't you Joe before he left Captain Roberts noticed that the gasoline can in our garage was open again so since you've been having so much trouble here Joe I think we better give your house a complete safety inspection he started right down in the basement with the fuse box remember the penny that Joel put in to replace a fuse during the party Captain Roberts didn't like that at all he said a fuse was a safety device that blows out when too much electrical current is going through the circuit and a penny wouldn't allow the fuse to blow out the wiring could overheat and cause a fire in the kitchen was a good example of how they were overloading a circuit they had too many appliances plugged into one Outlet next he showed them that it was dangerous to run electrical cords under rugs the wires could become damaged and start a fire then he came to the wall heater with flammable material all around it he said you shouldn't put clothing and papers and things close to heaters well after all that I thought Joe and Kathy had made things pretty safe around the house I thought they'd finally learned but then this afternoon Joe Jo was using the power mower and had left that unsafe gasoline can in the garage near the water heater I couldn't believe it but the worst part was that it had tipped over and Spilled then they went off to the movies so here I am waiting for the place to blow up that was a good movie you know something Kathy Captain Roberts is absolutely right when we get home let's check out the whole house let's make sure it's safe that sounds like a good idea dear uh-oh I wonder if I put the lid back on the gasoline can this [Music] afternoon what was that well looks like I'll have to find another place to live listen if you hear a scratching at your door some night that might be me [Music] I can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything [Music] okay hey get down from there [Music] now hey turn it over what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be minc meat by now what have I told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well I told him not to touch anything all right I guess I wasn't thinking you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger meet a man you ought to know I used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger Joe [Music] I was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my T box and I'll take myself a look I climbed up on a doer with my Mechanics Pride said you can keep it running friend while I poke around inside shake hands with danger meet a guy you watch to know I used to laugh at safety now they're call me three finger Joe although I learned a lesson I forgot it soon enough the Nicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones I was tough till another morning I was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say say hello grinding wheels in metal are what made me three finger jaill I've seen mechanics burning and I've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute I've seen them lose it all I've watched them courting trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the blue shake hands with [Music] [Applause] [Music] sh hands [Music] with SH [Music] hands she with around [Music] shake hands with around [Music] and dang inside [Music] shake hands danger around inside [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends I Used to Know compared to them I'm lucky to be just three finger [Music] [Laughter] Joe um so uh what was that some of you are like what what's going on um so that was uh a montage from uh the film shake hands with danger with a reenvisioning of the song shake hands with danger done by a local singer songwriter Scott Phillips who's uh in Raleigh uh my wife commissioned him to write that song and he made it kind of discoe SL Rocky Horror Picture shsh that's what he said um and yeah I could have have shown this film of course or it could have shown books who were for burning cuz they both deal with fire in some way but this one seemed to be more in the spirit of
