Hello everybody. Welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mimeter films. And uh last night I'm still glowing from the great show uh and response that I had last night uh at the Alamo. We showed films about Canada and made in Canada and it was just a good time. And so those of you who watched the show who were there last night, thank you so much. Um it's kind of why I do what I do and showing films to you guys. Even if it's like remote, it's still it still feels good to show you films. So um yeah, this is what I'm going to do. I'm just going to do this. Uh because even though last night was, you know, like maybe 60 people showed up, like this potentially is going to reach hundreds of people uh in the next 24 hours. And uh I appreciate each of you watching and putting in the time. And uh so uh thank you. Uh, so we're going to get started with um this is a film we've been, like I said, we've been doing some work for the Pllinger Archive, getting their stuff online on their official YouTube channel. So, this is a film made by Progressive Pictures, which is based in Oakland, California. Um, and they do a lot of like traffic safety and bicycle safety film and pedestrian safety films for kids. And this one is uh school bus safety. So school here is the school bus and you enjoy [Music] Riding to and from school can be a lot of fun if we are careful. This is Freckles waiting with her mother for the safety patrol boy who passes her house. He takes her safely to the bus. When the bus comes into sight, all of the children should be waiting so the driver can keep his schedule to the minute. See how the children stand in a straight line when the bus comes. They stay a safe distance from the edge of the road. The safety patrol stands at the front of the line to see that the children wait for the bus to stop completely and for the doors to open before they start toward the bus. The patrol helps the small children. When children have to wait on the opposite side of the street for the bus, they wait until the driver leaves the bus to escort them across. Children should never start across until he calls them. Again, the patrol helps small children get on the bus. Notice that the older children waiting for the school bus also stand a safe distance from the edge of the road. When they board the bus, the boys are polite and let the girls go first. See how the children wait until the bus is completely stopped and the door opened before they move toward it. Little boys help little girls on the bus, too. The children recite the slogan with the driver. These slogans are used to play the password game. Each morning, every seventh child leaving the bus, a few good slogans are remain seated until the bus stops. Keep arms and head in the bus. Look both ways before crossing the street. Cross streets on green lights only. Always use crosswalks. Never accept rides from strangers. Always walk facing the oncoming cars. When the bus arrives at school, the patrol leaves the bus first. He helps small children from the steps of the bus. Inside the bus, the driver helps them down. Pupils on the right side of the bus leave first, row by row. Many adults play important parts in our safety program. Here the driver is making the regular service check to be sure the bus is safe before starting his morning run. He is checking the rear tires with an iron bar. State police officers also inspect buses for schools. This sign tells motorists to stop for the bus. The officer goes after him. He will give the driver a ticket because a motorist must stop if he is behind or driving toward a school bus when it is loading or unloading children. The state and city police help protect the lives of all children. Here we see the captain of the Junior Safety Patrol with police officers inspecting the school safety patrol. The Junior Patrol is trained to help protect other children when crossing streets and highways on their way to and from school, but they do not direct traffic and they do not act as police. The patrol boy at front left is in complete charge of the school crossing. It is his duty to see that there are no cars coming before he allows the children to cross the street. Patrols do not leave the curb in the line of duty. The patrol boy in command tells the children when it is safe to start across the street. The other patrols hold their stop signs out where the motorists can see them. After the last child reaches the opposite curb, both patrols return to their guard position. When an adult guards the crossing, the children wait on the curb until he reaches the center of the street and calls to them to cross. The adult guard can stop traffic and he stays in the middle of the street until the last child reaches the opposite curb before he returns to his guard position at the curb. When a police officer is on duty at a crossing, the pupils wait until the traffic stops and the officer signals them to cross the street. Many children ride city buses to school. Even if there is not a patrol in charge, the children should line up back of the curb when the bus comes and behave in an orderly manner. It is just as important to remember safety and courtesy rules on a city bus as on the school bus. Now, this is not a school bus. Children never cross in front of this bus. They wait for the bus to pass and then they make sure there are no cars coming. Before stepping from the curb, they look in both directions before starting across the street. If there is a light signal, they wait for the green light before crossing. At the end of the school day, the children who will ride school buses home line up with their bus group. A teacher walks with her group to the bus where the patrol helps them aboard. Before the driver stops his bus on the highway, he first sets his outside signal arm and stop sign. When it is possible, he pulls off the highway. The careful bus driver makes sure that the bus won't move while he is helping the children across the road. Patrols help the children from the bus. Now, see how they keep the children back until the driver is sure all traffic is stopped and calls for them to cross. The driver does not return until he sees that all of the children are safely across the road. On the return trip home in the afternoon, the front bus safety patrol kept small children off at each stop. Well, well, here's Freckles returning home. The patrols have done their work well. The driver has been very careful. He didn't take any chances. Boys and girls do their part for safety by working with the drivers and patrols. Yes, Mother Freckles has returned safely thanks to our Junior Safety Patrol. Remember, patrols do not stop traffic. Children, wait to cross the street until the patrol officer makes sure it is safe to cross. Safety is courtesy. Remain seated until the bus stops. Wait your turn to leave the bus. Be careful. Wait for the green light and look both ways before leaving the curb. Follow the rules. Obey the patrols and the driver. They have been trained to help you. Always be careful. [Music] So, I uh made a flyer last night for the the screening that I did and I had AI create uh an image of someone shleing films and I what did I use? I need to find what the prompt was. Um it's very interesting. Uh it's very specific prompt. I said, "Make a black and white line drawing of someone carrying a giant stack of 16 millimeter film reels." And I guess because I have an account with Chat GTP, it drew a picture of me. I feel like that's me um shleing a bunch of film reels. It it decided that the person was going to have glasses and uh it decided that the person was going to have an AV geek shirt and it also decided that that person would have a scowl on their face. So what is chat GTP telling me? Is it grow is it drawing a picture of me uh just scowlling and being a pain and just going like I hate this. I hate carrying all these films and you know is it is it trying to tell me something? I don't know. Um but I thought it was funny. And the thing is like I use I can draw like I can illustrate stuff but I just don't have time to do it. So I'm not putting an artist out of work using this. Like I I would be drawing the person with a scowl on their face. But uh all right. So, uh, here's a film about modern architecture. Probably circa 1970, 1975. I'm not sure. I don't have the year. It's modern identity. Enjoy. [Music] The United States is a land of change. Skyscrapers seemingly shoot out of bare soil, replacing the buildings of the past. Whole again at a faster pace than any nation in history. [Music] The old witness of our diverse heritage is vanishing. [Music] The United States is a land of contrast. From the picturesque to commercial sections of to skyscraper images revealing the nation's resourcefulness, which is the true identity. Skyscrapers were the first typically American creation. When New York City rose upward, the world identified the s graceful. It was a bold modern way of building, a triumph of man's new skill. But even those early skyscrapers were not freed from tradition. 19th century ornaments still odds columns rose over several stories. A building invention of ancient Rome. [Music] Construction methods progressed. Materials could be assembled, molded, and poured on the spot. But the modern form, the contemporary style had not yet been found. It should be a precise and simple form to identify with the machine age dictated by mass production methods of machined materials. With the advent of the freestanding steel frame, heavy stone walls were no longer needed. The contemporary style was born when walls turned into picture windows made of glass. Sheer glass walls reflecting the surrounding city. In the early 1950s, Manhattan's lever house presented an unconventional form. A rectangular slab with slender sides, a simple broad front, and all glass walls for decoration. Equally revolutionary was Manhattan's serum building designed by Mis Vandereo a few years later. It also featured a splendidly conceived tower, a simple rectangular slab. What a classic solution. From east to west across the country, the new skyscraper for modernized skylines, incredibly slender, austere and streamlined, [Music] the all glass wall opened up the view. The play of light created changing patterns reflecting the rhythm of today's city life. continually awake day and night. [Music] The Q building followed the trend setting slab form. Modern man could identify with the simplicity of rectangles and squares expressing the unadorned realism of technology. [Music] Then concrete was utilized again to vary the new look. It was a geometric look and gave American architecture for the first time an identity of its own. The simple use of horizontals and verticals was pioneered by Picasso's cubist movement in 193 when modern artists envisioned the city as a dynamic force soaring upward. [Music] 50 years later, architecture rose to this artistic vision. Yet all art requires a balance. The angular forms of modern sculpture are balanced by curving features. Great painters such as Sesan presented a formula in art. Straight lines are carefully arranged to emphasize circular shapes. Now that architects broke with tradition, they went beyond the geometric look to imaginative forms and shapes. The pure circular shape, a new concept of design. Yet returning to the round form of Rome's great landmark, the Colosseum, it is as old as man's quest for beauty. With the flowing circle, the graceful curve, the United States has discovered its creative genius. [Music] Recent styles range from unconventional circular shapes to the very opposite. it the strictly geometric slab. Architects no longer copy historic styles which were created by other cultures and reflected ideals of the past. A modern concept of simple beauty is in the making. Proven old forms are utilized but given new shape. Columns first built around Greek temples once again surround buildings but appear in a newly creative design. Creative styles. They are stone images of man's dreams and aspirations. 500 years ago in Florence, man awakened to the concept of pride and dignity. A powerful architecture was created which gave rise to the Renaissance. [Music] New American skyscrapers with their bold forms repeated in sculpture have a modern identity symbolic of the space age. Different times, different ideals. An 18th century classic seen in Saltsburg, Austria. A contemporary walkway should be as pleasing as Renaissance landscaping has pleased generations of visitors. Great works stand for centuries. Medieval cathedrals, this one in Germany, perfectly reflect the faith of the Gothic age. Our age is mirrored in the architect's concept of elegance and function. Baroque fountains in Rome. The fountains of the new Los Angeles County Museum satisfying man's thirst for beauty. The round arches of ancient Atruscans are reborn in the arches of our times. Slender, elongated, presenting a modern image. A new vista has opened and it projects the hope for an environment of dignity and delight. [Music] So, uh, Raleigh, uh, and specifically the, uh, school of design at NC State had a lot of architects. uh a lot of mid-century architects of note who designed some really amazing structures, but Raleigh kind of didn't care. And so a lot of them got uh torn down in the 80s and 90s to make parking lots or to make like really gross postmodern buildings. Uh there's still some wonderful examples of that architecture. There's Dorton Arena, which is this amazing structure that's at the state fairgrounds, and there's some homes that are still surviving, but um yeah, there uh Raleigh's Raleigh hates its history. Um it's very selective in what it likes and uh so it's it's frustrating to see like, wow, no, wait, if you just look at that building, it's not just a bank building. It's like, look at what's going on here. And so, anyways, uh, let's see. What are we going to watch next? Ah, I know what you're looking for. The Old Testament is probably going to be filled with a lot more action and violence and this wasn't This is just blathering on and on. Oh boy. So, I'm going to reset us a little bit. get us back to where we were before uh with your good old friend Hoa. Enjoy. [Music] [Music] It is no secret that men frequently visit the coffee house for more than a cup of coffee. In our coffee house, they often go to talk and to listen to the wise shake who from time to time retells the stories of Nasrain Hocha. Here is a book with the right ideas. Reading is good for everyone. Listen to what it says right here. The ideal state must own everything, business and industry and farms. Also, it must control all art and science. Practices that divide people like free enterprise and religion and different political parties would be forbidden. Everybody would be free to serve the all powerful state and share in the blessings of its power. That is nonsense. Did you say nonsense? Yes, I said nonsense. Ahmed, why would a radical system like this help our country? Because that's just what it says right here in the book of my party. Your vision, Hameid, is based on a little bit of knowledge. What you do not have to guide your actions is long-term experience. by feeling one leg of a strange beast. Could you describe the whole animal? An animal offended? Yes, Bourhan. I was remembering something Naseredin Hocha once taught long ago. Sit down, Hamid. Listen to this story called A Lesson from the Hocha and try to understand how it might apply to you. Long ago, when Nasrain Hocha was teaching in his village, three of the older boys decided that they needed no more schooling and much more time to enjoy themselves, which made life miserable for the villagers. news. [Music] Delighted with their mischief, the boys spared no one, not even the Hocha himself. [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh. [Music] [Applause] Oh, no. No. It isn't possible. It can't be. Oh, help. Help someone. Something terrible has happened. It's my wife. My good wife. She's hung herself. Look at her. Help someone. Oh, help. This is terrible. Oh, my wife. [Music] Finally, the patient villagers decided the boys had gone too far and must be punished. But the Hocha had other advice. I really believe the trouble with these boys is that their little bit of learning has gone to their heads. Clearly, they think themselves far wiser than their elders. They must be taught that true wisdom comes from experience. The villagers wondered how this could be done. And the Hocher had an answer. Tomorrow afternoon, I will give these foolish boys a lesson from the Hocha. Oh my goodness. [Music] Next day in the village square, Naseredine made a strange bargain with the three blindfolded boys. You feel you are clever enough to obey no one and do just as you please. Very well. Let us test your wisdom by bringing a strange animal here before you. Each of you may feel it with your hands. Then if you can describe the whole animal clearly, you are free to play your days away. But if you cannot, you must go to work helping your fathers. Of course, the boys were very confident of their own abilities. And as soon as they had agreed, the Hocher decided the lesson could begin. That's As Narasine and the villagers looked on, the first boy groped his way forward and finally clasped his arms about. I know the animal is tall and round like a tree. [Music] [Laughter] When the second boy found the animal, his hands reached out and took its measure. This is easy. The animal is broad and flat like a wall. H. The largest boy was just starting forward when something round and twisting brushed against him. It's a snake. This animal is a big snake. Hoocha. You are trying to kill us. And with that, Naseredine signaled for the animal to leave. Now the boys felt a violent arguing. The first insisted that the animal must be tall and round. The next knew it was broad and flat, while the biggest boy was positive that the animal must be like a snake. And the biggest boy who spoke loudest won the argument. [Music] Like all the villagers, the hocha was well satisfied. Now see how wrong you were. You are young, I know, and perhaps have never seen an elephant before. But you were quite ready to say what it would look like, even though you had felt only part of this animal. Remember, true knowledge and wisdom come only after long experience. Now go home. You have had your lesson from the Hocha. The lesson of the hocha still applies to us all, Hamid. So be careful about putting your faith in the radical new ideas which you read in one or two books. There are countless others, don't forget, which recommend the wisdom of long experience. Perhaps before you decide, you would do well to read all the facts. That is what the Hoa taught, and it makes good sense. [Music] Young boys pranking the community. I mean this is before Tik Tok like so I mean this predates Tik Tok by like hundreds of years. Um young impetuous youth and Hamid I wish there was just a c just a a short with just Hamid just talking like this and reading his book of communism his red book and being mad at everything and everybody. Um, I mean, so yes, this is 100% propaganda against specifically communist uh communism in uh the Arabic world and I think specifically Iran, but I could be wrong about that. But um yeah, and so they fall back to Hoa and they tell the stories and all this stuff. So anyways, thanks so much for tuning in today. I very much appreciate your eyeballs. I'm sorry. I again this is very frustrating. Like there is something going on where OBS is just pausing. It's not playing back the videos and it's very frustrating. I'm still trying to diagnose what's going on.
