e e e e is oops where am I Where'd I go there I am yeah so I couldn't get the projector sound to run initially I was like what's going on so sorry about that if it came out in the middle of nowhere I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and sometimes sometimes my hair is okay and sometimes it's fly away kind of depends on the humidity I think um anyway so that was uh what we have titled the Menino rushes The Avenue of the Giants so it's basically um a bunch of trees uh in the Bay Area of San Francisco California um and it just seems like maybe this is the perfect time to show this film uh this is uh cornet film life in Central Valley of California enjoy [Music] the Great Valley of central California lies almost in the center of the state it is more than 400 mil long and 60 Mi wide and except for the narrow opening at San Francisco Bay it is surrounded by ranges of high mountains a long time ago this whole area was a great Gulf an arm of the Pacific Ocean many Swift streams flowed into it from the surrounding mountains rushing mountains streams like this carried millions of tons of Earth down into the Gulf now what happened after that went on for thousands of years decayed rock materials from the mountains were dumped into the Gulf and spread out by the rivers and streams gradually the gulf filled up with these earth materials now all that is left of the old Gulf is San Francisco Bay after countless thousands of years the the Great Central Valley was formed a valley filled with deep fertile soils and drained by two river systems the Sacramento fed by many tributaries flows from the Northern end of the Great Valley to the Delta land east of San Francisco and the sanen drains the southern end of the Great Valley flowing northward to the Delta and the Bay now we see the the valley is high at the North and South ends and slopes to nearly sea level where the two rivers meet in the days of the early settlers cattle were raised in the northern part of the Great Valley in the long hot summers they could be driven up into the Green Meadows of the nearby mountains but some areas in the Sacramento Valley were so dry that only sheep could be grazed profitably far to the south in the sane Valley there was so little rainfall that millions of Acres were Wasteland only a handful of settlers tried to make this forbidding land support them and these men in the sanen valley envied the farmers who took up land 400 mil to the north because most of the northern part of the Great Valley had enough water for wheat corn and vegetables the Farms of this part of the valley were prosperous the wealth of this Northern section of the Great Valley was water flowing from the nearby mountains the Farmers on this land harvested Rich crops Dairy farming prospered with Green Pastures and pure water now let's remember this fine Farm in the well-watered part of the northern Valley and compare it with this in the southern sanin this soil is Rich given enough water it could produce Bountiful Harvest only about 40 m from this dry valley floor but higher in the rain moist sier Nevada mountains are the Giants of qua trees how Mighty water can be in shaping the landscape but nature had not provided water down in the valley millions of Acres would have remained a Barren waste if the men who settled this part of the Great Valley had not used their knowledge and strength to irrigate the land they dug Wells and pumped water into the naturally fertile soil as more and more water was needed they built reservoirs to hold the excess water of the winter rains the frost-free growing season is more than 240 days a year and with irrigation many Farms Produce several crops each year today the valley is benefiting from the creation of a giant irrigation project many huge reservoirs and a great network of canals and pumping stations provide water for millions of acres in the Great Valley when man used his wisdom and energy to bring water to this land he worked wonders the irrigated soil yields heavy crops of long staple Egyptian cotton the original cotton seeds were imported from the muddy Delta of the Nile River the climate and soil of the entire Central Valley are excellent for grapes and its Vineyards rival those of France and Italy many varieties of grape are used to make the wines for which the valley is famous and here's another famous crop of the valley raisins The Ripe grapes are placed on paper trays right in the vineyard where the hot sun dries them and turns the juice into sugar when they are dry on top they are turned to dry the grapes evenly and prevent milw the City of Fresno is known as the raisin center of the world men use the hot sun of the long rainless summer to dry grapes into raisins plums into prunes as well as figs pears and apricots dried fruit is a major product of the Great Valley and conditions for drying it are at their best near Fresno finally the trays of nearly dried fruit are stacked so that nature will finish the process slowly in the shade some ranchers operate their own roadside stands selling produce to customers who come along the highways but most of the crops go to nearby Fresno where they are prepared for Market that's a load of fresh picked grapes Bound for Market we've learned how man's use of irrigation developed the Arid southern part of the Great Valley and how the City of Fresno serves as a trading center for the region 200 mil North on the Delta of the San waen is Stockton the natural fertility of the Delta land has been increased by another system of canals and pumping stations Distributing water to 400,000 Acres of Rich Farmland the irrigated land produces valuable harvests of beans carrots celery tomatoes in fact a great many different kinds of crops are grown here on the rich Delta soil and Stockon has become the key City in the Central Valley for marketing and distributing fresh vegetables and fruits farther north near the state capital Sacramento we'll see how the farmers have made use of the lowlands bordering the Sacramento River this Broad River provides ample water for right Growers here we can see how rice is grown in China or Egypt but this fertile Rice Field is in California huge fields are flooded dyed into large squares quite unlike the small Pates of China or Egypt the water supply of the northern Sacramento Valley has been increased by huge reservoirs like the one behind Chasta Dam water is distributed to thousands of Acres that were once useful only for wheat or barley but are now capable of producing more profitable crops such as fruits irrigation and modern farm machinery increase the yield of the land and provide employment for millions of people the city of Sacramento chief trading center for the northern Valley lies at the head of navigation on the Sacramento River oil tankers and bches deliver fuel oil for sac Mills and factories for this city has become a busy manufacturing center producing tools and machines needed by the farmers of the valley to ship these products and to bring in raw materials Sacramento is served by one of the largest railroad yards in the nation at Roseville nearby Stockton serving the rich Delta land farther south markets and ships vast quantities of Valley Produce but by by far the greater tonnage of vegetables and fruits goes to the canaries where it is processed and packed for safe delivery to all parts of the world Stockton is famous as the canning center of the valley fruits and vegetables are often completely processed canned labeled and crated ready to ship within a few hours after they have been picked in the fields Stockton like Sacramento is located loated on a navigable river here on the sanen the farmers and Packers Goods may be loaded into ships for Asia or Australia or into trucks or Freight cars which distribute the Harvest of the Central Valley to every state in the Union today the Central Valley of California is a rich source of food and wealth for the whole nation three rapidly growing cities Sacramento in the north Stockton on the great Delta and Fresno in the South serve the regions around them we have seen how the farmers have used irrigation to turn useless land into Rich farms and we have seen how the land and the climate help to shape the lives and occupations of the people who live in this Central Valley [Music] um yeah there you go the Central Valley um some of you seems like uh you live near there uh I have certainly driven through there uh on route from one place to another in California but um yeah let's uh let's keep on that Coronet tip and uh watch laws and social controls now this is made in the late 40s early 50s I think beautiful color though here we go enjoy [Music] the policeman on the corner is a good symbol for law like the policeman law directs Us in doing the right things to live together in harmony and law forbids us from doing the wrong things that tend to destroy that social harmony but law is more than the policeman on the corner more than the courthouse where our laws are enforced more than the jail where law Breakers are punished law is one of three forms of social control which regulate our daily lives custom what we usually do moral code what we should do and law what we must do now just how do these social controls affect us well in the teen canteen in our town we'll find part of the answer to that question you see the canteen is always busy early in the evening but on week nights the crowd thins out gradually so when the clock approaches closing time things quiet down in a hurry the club has its own laws about closing and the members obey them after closing time you won't find anyone there except for the three members whose turn it is to clean up but did I say three just us Betty aren't there always three on the cleanup committee yes I wonder who's missing if it's that Jack McGregor again it is I've heard he always Ducks out early it's bad enough with three to clean out but only two and he's supposed to be business manager of the canteen you know Betty I'm going to bring this up at the business meeting tomorrow I'll show that Jack McGregor I meant to tell you I'm very honest jeane my dad insisted that I'd be in the house by 11:00 can't you explain to him he wouldn't want you to run out in your responsibilties would he take it easy we're not getting anywhere this way staying to clean up is a problem with a lot of us even though I'm the chairman of the canteen I've had to skip cleanup duty to keep from being out too late see maybe week nights we ought to close the canteen earlier you'll never get anyone to agree to that I don't know maybe that is the answer tell you what let's meet again when we can have our advisors in to help us work this thing out as you know our civic association has been with you from the start I believe I can speak for the association and as your advisor in recommending that it would be very wise for you to close the canteen on week nights at 10:30 instead of 11: after all that's customary in our town the drugstores ice cream stores most of the places of business are closed by that time and well it seems to me that you might close too the theater stays open later than 11: but we're not a theater some people may question our behavior when we keep the canteen open till 11 I don't think it's right for us to stay out so late who's to say what's right we know what's good for us nobody has to stay here till 11: just because the canteen is still open there's no law that says you have to stay or you have to go you're a lawyer Mr Parks there's no law is there no Jack I don't think there is now but I have heard people talking about your late hours here we better realize that the town could pass a law which would compel you to close at 10:30 or 10 or even nine you see whatever the community decides is best for itself usually becomes law the community well aren't we part of the community of course you are Jack but thinking of the community as a whole well I wouldn't like to see our town pass a curfew law as some other towns have don't you think it would be better for the community and for you if the canteen were to pass its own law to close week nights at 10:30 and so Jack is learning about social controls it's customary said Mrs Brown It's Right Said Janes it's the law said Mr Parks yes they can all see how these social controls custom moral code and law have always played a part in the activities of the Teen Cante teen here as in our general Society there are a great many customs and we accept them customs of dressing we're neat and clean customs of courtesy we're thoughtful of others what happens if we violate a custom it isn't serious perhaps we simply lose a little Prestige nevertheless Customs do control us we make a habit of following them and then there are moral codes sometimes called the Moray these these are society's standards about what we should and should not do they are more deeply ingrained in us we simply don't cheat in games we and the society in which we live think that's the proper way in the canteen there's no drinking or gambling that's in line with the moral code of this group and what happens if we break the moral codes well anyone who breaks these loses social status he no longer belongs he's an outcast and then there's law let's return to that business meeting where a new law or rule has been under consideration it seems we have four good reasons for setting the closing time of a canteen at 10:30 on week nights for the convenience of the cleanup committee we need an earlier closing hour then there's the custom in the town and some feel that it's not right for us to stay out late finally we want to be sure that we stay within the laws of the town so that we can continue to govern ourselves without outside interference with all these Reasons I'm sure the majority of canteen members will vote for 10:30 closing what do you say I think it's the only thing to do I'll agree well we're only advisors you make your own laws but I think you'll find that your new law is a good law law is a whole body of rules for our conduct made by representatives of the people and enforced by established means we all know that there are many don'ts in the laws we make law prohibits what the majority decide is wrong law directs what is agreed to be right laws require you to go to school so that you and Society will benefit and laws provide the schools for you to attend thus every day you come in contact with social controls with custom with moral code and with law suppose this were you what social controls affect you well in your family and your school and your church in your whole Community there are customs and moral codes which guide your actions many of these customs and mores are enacted into formal laws the town or city in which you live has laws which control you there are state laws passed and enforced by state governments and the federal government in your name makes law laws which affect you and we are hopefully working toward a still higher level of law the law of Nations United for World Peace you are Guided by all these laws and controls the new law for closing at 10:30 was agreed upon by a majority of the members of the Teen Cante teen it's a good law because it agrees with the Customs the moral codes and the laws of this group and of this community in a democracy such laws and social controls belong to the people who live under them these laws are yours to make wisely to change intelligently to understand and live by um two legs good four legs bad uh let's see actually that that came up because uh a friend of mine's father wants to show Animal Farm to my friend's uh kids and uh was asking me if I thought it was appropriate and I was like hm I said show the animated version not the liveaction version um because it was the live the animated version was made in the ' 50s uh live action is more contemporary and more intense uh all right so behind me oh no actually I wanted to do this where is it okay um so I promised to show you kind of what um why is this running all right I promise to show you uh this is uh my intern miles who has helped us move these a bunch of the films that um we moved last week I think we moved almost all of these films last week uh these are all of the larges this is the 1, 12004 uh 1600 ft reels this is um final reel that a final space that's going to have all the Smalls uh and small pluses uh Smalls being 400 feet um small pluses 600 feet um these are all in one storage uh place in downtown Raleigh um um yeah we moved lots and lots and lots of films and shelving last week and we still have some to go but thank you miles thank you Mari thank you Ryan thank you kaan for all the work that you have done um it was epic it still is epic we still have more to go through and get out um before they start doing demo work uh in the back for the big renovation it's all to make that space healthy for films healthy for people Etc all right uh I was mentioning that I have a film on the scanner this is one I haven't seen and I had to look it up uh this is kind of fascinating so this is um alone in the midst of the land apocalypse anyone [Music] wo unto them that join house to house that lay field to field till there be no room and ye be made to dwell alone in the midst of the land Isaiah 5th chapter the 8th verse [Music] h [Music] h [Music] welcome to the museum boys and girls if you will look above you at the ceeling you will see groups of strange twinkling lights these represent the stars in the skies above Chicago for more than 50 years we have not been able to see the sky but if we could we would see the following groups of stars called constellations Versa major Versa minor Andromeda J the planet Earth is nearly dead its most intelligent animal species the homo sapiens commonly called man approaches Extinction for some time this species has been unable to reproduce those few still living wear padded suits and masks and near the end man did not die from germ warfare nor in nuclear Holocaust he died because he killed his planet for some reason the homo saans thought his breed stood apart from nature never fully accepting that mankind was but one animal species among many man destroyed his environment with willful abandonment and the environment in turn destroyed man this is a progress report about the balance of nature in the year 1970 and what we can expect in years to come sometime in the future man will attempt long trips through space inside the rocket ships everything will be limited air and water will be recycled an efficient balance of plants and animals will be maintained for food population will be limited waste or overcrowding would bring death to those on board the ship Earth itself is a spaceship moving through the heavens and around the Sun it has a delicately balanced environment providing living space air water and food we are all aboard the spaceship Earth on its maiden voyage through the universe and something is going wrong based on the present rates of birth and death there will be more than four times as many people to be fed and housed within the lifetime of a child born in 1970 at least 3 and 1 half million people will starve to death in 1970 a mere handful compared to the numbers expected to starve within 10 years smoke and filth clog our air at times pollution is so thick that it damages trees in the forest preserves surrounding Chicago we have twice the incidence of lung cancer than is found in a country like Norway where the air is cleaner ecologists fear that mankind will die of Suffocation one out of four hospital beds across the world contains a patient ill because of polluted Water Lake Michigan formed 12,000 years ago is now dying 100 years after man began and dumping things into it experts now say that at the present rate Lake Michigan will be dead in nine years despite the awesome predictions we continue to ignore the fact that human beings live within limits there is just so much land so much air so much water every living thing Depends for its life on other living things and the warning signs are up during the last 2,000 years 106 species of mammals have become extinct but nearly half of those animals have died in the last 70 years more than 100 species of birds have disappeared in the last 300 years more than 250 additional species of mammals and three 50 species of birds are now threatened and expected to die out within the next few years virtually extinct in 1970 for example are the European bison fal's horse on which the armies of KublaCon once rode into battle father David's deer from China the beautiful Honduran jaguar and the American Red Wolf most of these animals don't live in their natural state but are maintained only in zoos falling away in numbers and scheduled to become extinct within our Century our polar bears the pygmy hippo the Great Indian rhino American alligators and the walrus just to name a few the road that leads to Extinction seems to be a helpless Highway built by man no species is immune by application not even man himself once in a while a great ecological disaster creates public indignation last year for example countless thousands of birds were killed in California by oil leaking from an undersea well fish in great numbers die damaged to Plankton the one celled sea animal that produces much of the oxygen we breathe is feared to have been great but most serious is the fact that other accidents like this one could still happen oil is the enemy of water and all life within it but when because of industrial carelessness 5,000 gallons of soybean oil was poured into the Chicago River on March 21st 1969 no test for biological damage was even made the water water in the Chicago River no longer has enough Purity to bother to measure for such minor contaminations where once the Indians drank freely we can now only carry sewage and Propel boats the state water plan of Illinois published some 3 years ago declares that the beautiful Illinois River is too polluted to be used for a water supply the same plan states that swimming or even water skiing in any of the streams or rivers in Illinois is not recommended despite known danger to man and his healthful environment three steel companies and three oil refineries expel more than 7 billion gallons of waste into the Calumet River daily water that contains oil nitrogen and cyanide the Calumet flows into Lake Michigan which is of course the source of drinking water for Chicago and many other communities with totally contaminated Lake Erie as a grim reminder a portion of our own calat Harbor is now said to be vying for the dubious distinction of being the most polluted body of water in the world some beaches on Lake Michigan have been closed to swimmers for years many others close for periods each summer with increasing frequency even without considering the pollutants man has changed the entire Ecology of Lake Michigan in the last 40 years it once abounded with lake trout chub perch and white fish providing an annual commercial catch of 265 million PB but the fishing industry was virtually destroyed by a par site the sea lampri eel the lampri entered the lake through the Wellen Canal adapted to fresh water and attacked the trout in 1942 1 million PBS of trout were caught in the Chicago Wan fishing ground 8 years later the same area produced only six trout and five of them bore scars from the lampy eel the Wellen canal and later the St Lawrence Seaway introduced another sea creature to lake waters the ale wife a worthless trash fish it now accounts for approximately 90% of the fish weight in Lake Michigan eventually conservationists found ways of coping with the lampre eel but the ale wife is still a pest especially during the midsummer die offs that fowl the beaches in Hope of destroying the AL wife and at the same time providing recreational fishing for sportsmen the state of Michigan introduced the cohost salmon to the lake the COO is a large game fish a magnificent predator and it has provided a good deal of excitement thus far but whether or not it can help solve the ecological problems of Lake Michigan May well become a moot point half of the salmon planted in the lake die of DDT poisoning before they reach maturity and 25,000 pounds of coo purchased commercially for sale to the public were impounded by the federal government last year because the fish contained dangerously high concentrations of DDT in their systems DDT gets into the waters in runoff from areas where the fruit crops or Fields have been sprayed these attempts at Pest Control can unbalance the delicate ecological system of the Earth for example in the spring of 1956 the people in the suburban community of Elmhurst Illinois proud of their hundred-year-old trees became concerned about the Dutch elm disease they undertook saturation spraying to kill the beetle that carried [Music] it what they did not realize was that the DDT sprayed on the trees would be eaten by the earthworms when the leaves fell to the ground in the fall the following spring the robins returned to Elmhurst but by miday there were dead birds in nearly every yard and a Carion smell was in the air Robins sparrows starlings gral kinglets all dead from eating The Poisoned worms what's more DDT continues to have some effect on the soil on which it lands for some 18 years scientists were shocked to learn recently that DDT was found found in the tissues of penguins in the Antarctic many thousands of miles away from any area where the pesticide was sprayed the DDT had apparently been carried to the polar region on the wind and by migrating fish and birds Dr Joseph hickey chairman of the Department of Wildlife ecology at the University of Wisconsin said the pesticide may lead to the end of the species penguin as it is apparently doing with other bird species closer to home evidence was presented at the 1969 hearings in Madison that DDT is threatening many types of birds and bringing to near Extinction a number of the birds of prey including the bald eagle the Osprey and the paragan Falcon the pesticide apparently affects the nervous system of the birds the eggs develop improperly shells are too thin and crack or break before the young are hatched in itself the death of birds might not seem a great catastrophe to some but ecologists indicate that birds and man sit together at the top end of the food chain we must understand that the pesticides which affect the nervous system of birds could have a like effect on man as the concentrations build up there are predictions that man may bring death to his own planet Earth if that happens it will be caused by ignorance pillage and wanting destruction of the circumstances that gave birth to human life for as we poison the water our industrial life violates the air spewing 140 million tons of pollutants Skyward every year every jet that takes off leaves 88 lbs of residue behind as a souvenir in a city like Chicago that amounts to some 66 tons a day during the last industrial Century more than 400 billion tons of carbon alone were artificially introduced into the atmosphere leading to what some scientists are calling the greenhouse Theory according to this Theory the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide thrown into the air form a dome in the atmosphere warming the climate artificially therefore at the present rate the mean annual temperatures all over the world would increase by more than 5° over the next 50 years this would speed the melting of the polar ice caps raise the level of the oceans and put much needed land underwater closer to home we have already noticed weather changes probably caused by air pollution average snowfall at the south end of Lake Michigan has increased from 54 in in the 1920s to 78 in in the 1940s to 85 in by the late 1950s this increase follows a curve that is very similar to the growth of production in the Chicago Industrial Area but changing weather isn't the only problem lurking in the air in 1948 at dinora Pennsylvania 20 people died and 5,000 were reported ill when polluted air was trapped on the ground by a thermal inversion a similar inversion in 1953 killed more than 4,000 people in London in November of 1969 for nearly a week Chicago was struck by a super smog people with lung conditions and children with respiratory illness were urged to curtail normal activity and stay indoors the situation with our air is serious to the point of tragedy Urban dwellers in a number of our cities breathe into their lungs the equivalent intoxic materials of one to two packs of cigarettes each day respiratory diseases are doubling every 5 years at the same time that we poison the air we limit this planet's ability to create oxygen in America alone we pave over more than a million Acres of oxygen producing vegetation each year in addition we're using much of the land to build new homes for the growing population in Los Angeles when they ran out of flat space for homes they built on the slopes the result for some time now the hillsides surrounding the city have been giving way because the animal and vegetable life has been so badly Disturbed the Earth will not hold water and washes away great amounts of land are being taken permanently out of production at a time when there are fears that we will run out of food for some years now the world has been consuming more food than it produces to maintain the supply of food at its present level will require a doubling of all food production by the year 2000 more than a billion people now crowd our cities onethird the population of the Earth by the time the century ends there will be another 3 billion people and most of them will join us in the urban communities observation and experiments with animals indicate that crowding all by itself is a pollutant of Life groups of mice studied at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo for example get along well together until their space becomes limited by increase in their numbers at which point they begin to show signs of acute stress with these mice overcrowding created a disordered and unstable structure in which social Customs broke down the population collapsed and eventually died off adding it all up one would get the idea that if nothing is done to reverse the trend man will become a hungry thirsty breathless psychopath a plaque at the Academy of Sciences in Chicago reads this is the good green planet earth on which you and I are but passengers in an endless journey through space other worlds that there may be but this one is ours we must understand it if we are to conserve it scientists are now giving Lake Michigan nine more years how much longer for the air for the land and for us [Applause] the vast loneliness of the Moon makes you realize what you have back there the Earth from here is a Grand Oasis astronaut James a Lovel December 24th 1968 [Music] h h [Music] oh wow I knew it was starting off to be a downer but um when they started playing the orgon music the uh pipe organ music and he's walking around um and there's no other people around uh I did not get to the point where he's watching a film uh all a Mega Man but he's watching a 16 mm film I love it uh made me very excited uh and I should say that two years ago I SW I swam in Lake Michigan in uh Chicago on one of the beaches uh they cleaned it up now I don't know what the state is uh as far as the fish but um there were efforts made to clean up Lake Michigan and other waterways now did they get back to pre-industrial times no definitely not but um this is a downer but it was meant to be a rallying cry to do something um I would say that we're in a downer situation again and there's a rallying cry to do something so do something uh make a positive change um yeah we can survive uh we are losing things but we can survive um and if we don't well that's fine but the Cockroaches run things uh all right thanks everybody for uh watching today uh I might just call it uh now cuz we started a little early um I could find another film but it's we'll just let this one settle settle in our brains because what I have lined up are they're too long um and I don't feel like running over today but uh thanks for watching today yesterday I had you watch a 30 minute film about uh automated Machining and today we watched a doom and gloom movie about the environment um that showed on television I don't know where it showed on television but it's still pretty great um and oh the soundtrack so like beyond the pipe pipe organ music there was uh I was like wow that that kind of ominous song what is that I know that and it's from Sudden birth uh the film that was made to train uh police officers on how to deliver a baby in the back of the car and it was creepy in that movie um because you get to see a live birth and it was also creepy in this film um it just added to the general creepiness of this but uh yeah um everybody have a great rest of your day we will be back tomorrow um and uh we'll be getting ready for if here in the Triangle North Carolina triangle area uh we will be doing a celebration of a group called Whiffle fist which was a collective of people that did sound projects audio visual projects it's where AV Geeks came from basically it was the the how it all kind of got started uh was amongst all of that uh and we'll be doing uh something at lump Gallery Friday Saturday and Sunday and we'll be doing performance es of some of the Bands including the band that I was in or two bands I was in uh on Saturday night uh I'll have more details as we go ahead but I've been looking at a bunch of video and a bunch of flyers and like wow a Geeks was doing a lot of stuff in the early 9s like '92 uh on so um pretty interesting uh so yeah like I said I'll have more information about that okay I've talked enough and it's it's weird it seems like the clock is not really working right I'm not sure what's going on it's it keeps going back and forth what time is it oh no that's right okay uh anyways everybody have a great rest of your day if you like what you saw
