working for McDonald's but uh yeah when I moved in here this is a boarding house and this room was uh had a mural of Jimmy Hendrick in it uh then in here we've got some Smalls here and then these are all gone and then go down here and this room is entirely empty of films it's now just empty racks so big push of course later this week is all of these 400 foot films which have not been touched at all uh we've been moving a lot of the big longer films which are super heavy uh but yeah we're getting work done sorry I'm missing you live but um we're doing a lot of moving so uh say goodbye to ET a tour of uh how things stand as the end of yesterday where uh we were exhausted it was a long day of moving stuff and uh we're doing more today which is why this is pre-recorded um and all this progress and this it's like a parade like this constant flow of uh assistants and interns moving things I was like oh well there's this great series called uh industry on parade and uh they're basically like little news real segments but it's all about how great whatever industry is and so it's basically just PR for different factories and Brands and and all that uh it's still pretty interesting uh nonetheless lots of assembly line footage in this um and so we're going to watch a couple of episodes maybe one two three four episodes five episodes they're all short uh is and then we're going to watch uh uh progress parade which feels like it's about the same thing it's it this was a very popular format for advertising um and doing press releases about uh industrial things and it's a great celebration of what what a lot of people are like well that's when America used to make things yes that's exactly what this is It's a celebration of that uh so enjoy uh I will maybe much as a matter of fact never having seen an open Cracker Barrel they have to be told of the sanitary and quality preserving aspects of today's containers another object lesson the economy is to be realized from buying the right quantities going behind the scenes the students visit the refrigerator room where meats are stored and cut and here I cified it's really amazing the number of ways our food comes to us these days fresh frozen canned dehydrated vacuum packed concentrated Ready Mixed these are refrigerated ready to bake biscuits just one of scores of items that combine the utmost quality with the utmost convenience [Music] field of research finding ways of preparing the standard food products in new tantalizing dishes like banana pancakes back at Rec High the class coordinates its field trip findings with its regular studies pupils discuss things like can sizes comparison of prices to weights and above all nutritional values as their teacher points out there are six daily food groups milk and milk product Meat and Fish Breads and cereals fruits vegetables and sweets and fats in moderation 17 magazine originated this program and articles in the magazine point out ways cleaning plant long accustomed to receiving visitors for in the trade the methods and machines used here are regarded as models of efficiency each day some 8,000 items are sorted and sent through machines like this one designed to remove all odors at other stages of the processing and span dry cleaning relies on skillful hands spotters know how to analyze each stain and select the agent that will remove it men women and machines work together in this department which presses trousers only 2,000 of them each day coats are the special province of another group which presses some garments from the inside on inflated forms the overhead conveyor is fast but not too fast for the trained eye of inspectors who examine everything and quickly return to the proper Department any item that need needs more attention this coat is missing a button it won't leave the plant without one and a good match is sure to be found somewhere in the button Library containing more than a million [Music] buttons the company's own Engineers developed a piece of sorting equipment called the segregator operated by only one girl it sorts thousands of items a day for 36 different delivery routes and Branch stores dry cleaning is a business based on fast efficient delivery 5-hour service is the promise and it's a promise which thanks to ingenious machines and skillful men and women is being kept by an industry helping to make Americans the best groomed people in the world [Music] ranchers whose livestock Ru the Western ranges are as interested in the weight of the animals as they are in weather for their income depends on it but to weigh beef you first have to catch it and that's just the start of the problem this company in Duncan Oklahoma helps the Rancher solve his problem by devising portable scales rugged enough to go out on the ranch to the cattle instead of waiting for the livestock to be rounded up and shipped to Market operated by Brothers Claude and Adrien Paul the plant turns out weighing devices on trailers easily pulled by tractor Jeep or car experts said it couldn't be done that a scale is too delicate an instrument to be hauled over bumpy roads and prairie dog holes but the brothers came up with an improved device using a different principle when they found the sharpened edges of traditional scales were easily damaged in transit they simply tried a system of cables and bars when test showed it served the purpose Paul's portable scale was born and with it a brand new [Music] business in use on nearby ranches the portable scale is ready to go to work less than 10 minutes after it's hauled into position no complicated adjustments are required when the scale is moved from one pen to another or from Ranch to Ranch so far they haven't found one bull or steer too big for the device that weighs livestock wherever the livestock [Music] wanders a Rancher himself and now an inventor and manufacturer as well Claude Paul says his scale eliminates guesswork by giving cattle Growers a way to spot unprofitable animals and call them from the herd early it started when Rancher Paul himself went shopping for a portable scale and heard the expert say impossible he wouldn't believe them and with one of the scales he invented having been pulled over more than 20,000 mil of rang land he thinks he's proved the experts were wrong [Music] [Applause] American employees are better informed than their counterparts anywhere else in the world industry is constantly improving employee employer understanding through face-to-face contacts employee opinion polls company Publications bulletin boards and implant meetings each year thousands of employees contribute to the suggestion system set up by management such a free and flow of facts and the job and off Dr Herman C Klein optometrist is part of that program an authority on Industrial Vision he is in charge of an eye conservation program based on techniques as modern as the plant Itself by examining each worker and each job he found 40% had visual problems in their work though many of those in the group had 2020 eyesight and others already wore corrected lenses studying each stage of the assembly process the doctor uses a sensitive light meter that measures the level of Illumination to pinpoint possible trouble he orders more light bigger reflectors or relocation of light fixtures wherever necessary manufacturer of cameras as well as sewing machine attachments puts demands on eyesight far different from those involved in driving a car watching a movie or reading a book since requirements of industrial vision and normal vision are so different Dr Klein not only checked the lighting but studies each operation step by step in this plant the expert finds the average work has performed just 14 in from the operator's eyes many persons with perfectly normal visual Acuity can often be helped by glasses on these jobs on others the consultant recommends special protective goggles to block fumes that may be dangerous to the eyes through safety instruction and other encouragement the company has scored a major victory in overcoming worker resistance to the wearing of safety [Music] goggles that could have caused Serious injury perhaps blindness at one time before the company began issuing individually fitted and therefore comfortable goggles Arc mcvety here found safety goggles awkward and uncomfortable now at the company Clinic where he goes for a checkup to make sure his eye is all right he has reason to thank the doctor whose pep talk on the use of goggles fellow employees although it has the easy friendly familiar style of any good employee publication don't be fooled these young people turn out a professional job that could be envied by many commercial magazines for example they have a method for pasting up the dummy pages that tells them at a glance how the work is progressing and what the book will look like when it's finished copy goes to the linotype operator who sets it in tyght by Machine editor Jones insists on maintaining the highest standards all along the line one reason the log has won highest honors for company Publications also a reason why the magazine has done such a good job of promoting better communication between employees and management that the state department distributes the log in foreign lands to help explain the American way of [Music] life we all prefer to read about our own friends and people we know and if that reading helps bring greater Mutual understanding it's as beneficial as it is entertaining a sun Chemical Corporation plant this one at clearing Illinois largest ink producer in the United States let's go down and see how they turn out the thousands of tons of ink needed to supply the Thirsty presses of magazines newspapers and other Publications one of the basic ingredients here to be processed is rosin it's dumped through a hole that leads to the pulverizer where it'll be transformed into a fine powder by conveyor the rosin goes next to a kettle where it's mixed with oil and subjected to heat that converts the mixture into fine rosin [Music] varnish another rosin used is gilsonite which will improve the flowing characteristics of the finished product and in the making of printer inks dozens of different mineral oils are Blended in they're handled by a maze of pipes more than seven miles of them all converging on this spot where the mixer can select whichever he needs for a particular formula last of the basic ingredients is carbon black most opaque black pigment yet developed actually it's nothing more than soot like that which comes out of your chimney except of course that it's been purified the mixture now complete is subjected to Sun chemicals own special processing and is discharged into an open tank from which samples are taken to make sure the batch contains all ingredients in precisely the right amount then it goes back for grinding and other processing after which it's tested again for uniform viscosity density and other characteristics required of the ink for modern printing presses finally ready for shipment in quantities ranging from 55 Gall barrels to 10,000g tank cars it goes out directly to the printing plants or to service stations maintained by The Firm at strategic points of around the country so when the word comes down to roll the presses there's an ink at hand more than adequate for the tremendous output of literature of all kinds in this best read best informed Nation on [Music] Earth whenever we go to shop these days we find that our money is worth about half of what it was in 1939 in the last Dozen Years our 100 cent dollar has slowly melted until today it is worth only 54 cents when we go to spend or save it this is inflation caused by cheap money now the way to strengthen our dollar and stop further inflation is for our government to balance its budget to cut all unnecessary spending and to raise every scent of money essential to run our government including the defense effort by adopting a sound tax program sound money means a strong and free America a soda fountain crew busy making up orders for customers in the familiar paper cups and containers sanitary attractive disposable eating sodas in Sundays and drinking beverages out of such containers is nothing new but dozens of uses that are new are being found for them every year at plants like that of the Lily tulip cup Corporation at Augusta Georgia from the paper mills the highquality stock arrives here and is hustled inside side to start through a maze of processes that will transform it into amazingly tough containers waterproof heatproof some of them and in designs suitable for just about any purpose you can imagine the paper is printed with bright decorations and Stamped Out in one continuous [Music] operation shaped and sealed they dipped in a bath of paraffine other containers those to be used for hot foods for example are not paraffine but instead are given special treatments of their own only efficiency like this makes it possible to produce containers so inexpensive that we can afford to throw them away after using them only [Music] once the containers are given frequent inspections at every step in the manufacturing process while in the ly chulip Labs raw materials and finished products are put through rigorous tests to make sure they measure up to ever higher [Music] standards in days gone by a paper cup served its purpose if it held a liquid long enough for you to get it to your lips but that's no longer true and paper is had to keep up with or ahead of such revolutionary new developments as frozen foods and restaurant take home service restaurants that find many of their old customers no longer dining out whether because of the attractions of Television the arrival of young children or whatever the reasons have been turning to take out orders as an extensive practically untapped new Parade stops off at the New York Waterfront for a look at some of the new ideas being adopted by the great American shipping Industries let's visit the Hudson River pier of the mo mccormic lines and see a few of Innovations in cargo handling methods adopted during the past few years when a cargo liner is about to sail the bustle of activity is much like that to be found when a passenger liner leaves except of course that it's Goods instead of people that converge on the pier from all parts of the nation the use of pallets and forklift trucks has relieved the hardworking long shoreman of much of the back breaking labor that formerly was his lck the cases and bags are stacked on the pallets which then can be shifted about the pier or hoisted right into the ship's [Music] hold but this cargo is going into a steel container called a cargo van first the cargo vans are proving especially useful in the safe shipment of small cargo that's more susceptible to page or damage in handling the Vans are scientifically and snugly packed so Goods can't shift or break loose either when being loaded or during the ocean [Music] Voyage not only does it save storage space aboard ship but in a cargo van a shipment is kept under lock and key until it reaches its destination [Music] in days gone by and even today in the ports of some Nations cargo is manhandled aboard ship trundled up gangways then down into the holes on the backs of men tortuous expensive business compared to methods like these [Music] only us style speed service and efficiency have allowed American shipping firms to meet foreign competition with its vastly lower wages the same sort of knowhow that created the wide array of American Industrial Products we see moving out to ready markets everywhere in the Free World for the bests in the world you must have the best tires and not even Joe Stalin has any doubts about where they after the tires come barrels of salt Cod All ingeniously stowed away according to a plan carefully thought out in advance one day spent in watching the loading of a cargo liner gives a good idea of the tremendous scope and variety of production here in America it's a real achievement on the part of Moore McCormick and other land sea and air transport industries that they've been able to keep the goods moving as fast as our farms and factories turn it [Music] out meet a couple of young men named Lloyd and F Briggs dalel who for the past 9 years have directed the operations of one of the biggest tugboat companies in the busiest Harbor in the world the scene is of course New York and the dispatchers Office of the dowel towing company from this nerve center are controlled the movements of 38 tugs that ply hundreds of miles each day back and forth over the North River the East River the lower Bay and the rest of this busy Port attending to a variety of Highly essential [Music] duties calls from customers flood the office of the dispatcher who must deploy the fleet of tugs by radio telephone in such a way that each tug can move from one assignment to the next with a minimum of lost time since calls for tugs come in at all hours of the day and night and there are frequent time changes keeping the organization running efficiently takes some doing this Captain has been dispatched to the side of an incoming freighter that needs plenty of skilled assistance in reaching a North River pier in the face of a Brisk wind and Powerful tricky tidle [Music] just one of the daily chores of these workhorses of the harbor without which many of the ports facilities could not be used even by mediumsized ships like the one here being [Music] docked whistle signals allow ship and tugs to to work smoothly together from here our tug may be dispatched across the Hudson to New Jersey to handle barge loads of the coal that's brought into New York City almost exclusively by this method call for homes for factories for Steam and electricity then perhaps help another ship put out to sea or lead a disabled vessel to the shipyard or help put out a fire or haul heavy cargo unimpressive little craft but what would New York do with Alam history shows that we Americans have attained the highest standard of living in the world the competitive American system based on freedom for the individual has encouraged us to develop new and better raw materials and to improve our buildings equipment and tools as a result we now produce three to four times more per hour than we did in 1850 while we enjoy nearly twice as much Leisure we can have an even higher standard of living in the future by increasing our productivity which will mean more and better products for [Music] all industry on Parade a pictorial review of events in business and industry produced each week by the National Association of [Music] Manufacturers here's a scene that has long since ceased causing any surprise the women folk washing dishes made of plastic dishes that bounce when they drop to the floor hard to realize it but it was only 10 years ago that the first pound of polyester plastic was sold and it was sold by Arnold Martinelli at left at that time a Salesman for Monsanto and now the owner of his own firm the Rogers plastic Corporation of West Warren Massachusetts in a 10-year-old industry a 6-year-old firm is a veteran and already is a leader in the production of household Wares which are molded on machines like this under a method called jet injection the molten polyester is forced into Precision molds under great pressure and immediately hardens into the exact shape of the mold Mr Martinelli who himself operated the first machine his company bought can still hold his own on the production line and occasionally does here we see coasters being packed for shipment and in a matter of minutes the line could be producing water Tumblers or tomato slicers bread boxes or pitchers it's this rapid adaptability together with the attractiveness usefulness and low cost of the plastic itself that has made this industry one of the fastest growing in the nation's history the future of plastics is bright indeed and Rogers is a company that intends to stay out in front broadening still further its already extensive line of products made of [Music] plastic hard to believe but here's a factory in New York City that can turn out 5,000 tanks and 10,000 jet planes in a single day working with classified blueprints from the defense Department the comet Metal Products Company can produce 5,000 ships 2500 trucks and 500 artillery pieces at the very same time if you haven't already guessed the tanks PL ships and guns produced here are Miniatures but they aren't toys and they are perfect scale models made from the blueprints of the real thing there can be no mistake about any detail for these miniature instruments of warfare will serve an important purpose they'll be used in training our fighting men to distinguish friendly ships planes and tanks from those of the enemy also in helping the high brass to recreate the picture of a military situation many miles away giving them a three-dimensional view of an [Music] operation during World War II the little Comet Metal Products plant was under a 24-hour security guard and the precautions once more are beginning to tighten up how any small boy would like to be turned loose in this Factory but this is serious business and when Uncle Sam says send us more tanks more ships more planes he isn't kidding for in their own way these tiny models of the genuine article can also help save the lives of American fighting men the National Plastic Products Company plant at Odenton Maryland a firm that plays one specialized part in the manufacturer of a product that makes life a little easier and better for all of us arriving at the Odenton Factory daily come tons of a white plastic powder called Saran made from petroleum and brine pumped out of deep underground lakes in the South the Dow Chemical Company produced the Saran powder now National Plastic Products will further process it add pigments and extrude or spin it into a fiber that can be woven like cloth here National Plastic Products will not do the weaving it sticks to the job it does best leaving earlier and later phases of the manufacturing operation to firms that have the expert knowhow in those fields out of the extruders come heavy strands of plastic which cooled in water and drawn out become thinner and thinner finally the Saran becomes a strong filament 15,000 of an inch in diameter it can now be handled in much the same manner as you would handle thread but its color is built in and it has uses to which thread could never be put now it moves on to another city in another state for the next step in its development the lumite division of the chapi Manufacturing Corporation of Georgia is the company that finally transforms The Sur and into products that will be used by the consumer first some of the fiber is rewound onto bobbins that will shuttle back and forth in the weaving to make the cross strands other spools are put on a creel to be rewound onto much larger rolls they'll feed the fibers that run longitudinally chopi has had long experience as a manufacturer of cotton cloth so the change over to weaving plastic Fabrics was accomplished with a minimum of confusion [Music] about once every 2 days the rooll of Saran thread for the warp must be renewed and a mechanical Tire joins every strand in only a few minutes it's here for example that a company like lumite is able to take advantage of knowledge gained in generations of practice in Allied Fields once everything is ready the loom goes into action [Music] and the end product not cloth as you think of it in this case although elsewhere in the plant the plastic is woven into fabrics for a variety of uses this is insect screen cloth with some surprising advantages over the usual screening materials completely rust and corrosion resistant it requires no protective painting since its color is built in strong light and top the Armed Forces preferred it above all others during World War II especially in the tropics now even when used in areas right near the water it's doing a standout job for the American [Music] homeowner around this particular household where there also appears to be a shortage of man power it's lumite screen cloth to the rescue the Communists would like to see inflation cheap in our money until it isn't worth the paper it's printed on cheap money means less value for our savings and insurance that's why the Communists would like to see cheap money create economic chaos but we can curb inflation and strengthen our dollars if each of us will avoid borrowing to buy unnecessary things by saving all we can not wasting materials and by supporting policies which increase our industrial productivity and by insisting our government does likewise a sound dollar means a strong and free [Music] America industry on Parade a pictorial review of events in business and industry produced each week by the National Association of Manufacturers the heart of the Cotton Belt the Deep South this Alabama Countryside was the scene of gracious living in Years Gone by and though it fell on hard times it's proving that the climate the soil and the temperament of its people are as suitable for gracious living in this Century as in the last industry on Parade cameramen arrive at the Alabama town of silaga to see just how people in these parts do live one thing certain there's nothing sleepy about it same stores same activity you'll find in any thriving bustling American town north or south e east or west and you don't have to hunt very far to find one force behind the healthy flourishing life of silaga it's a healthy flourishing industry called Avendale Mills that takes in the Raw Alabama cotton and transforms it into a variety of finished products needed by people everywhere from the opening machines the cotton is sent along to Pickers where it's partially cleaned emerging in the form of a loose blanket called lap on the card thousands of fine wire teeth will comb out additional foreign matter and begin to lay the fibers parallel to each other then begins the process of drawing the fibers out six strands are fed onto a roll that moves just six times as fast as the feeding rolls and after being drawn and spun again and again the yarn is finally ready for the Looms large rolls will feed the warp or lengthwise strands while the crosswise or filling Yarns are laid in by bobbins that shuttle back and forth as the warp Yarns are raised and [Music] lowered this particular fabric is Corduroy and dis blades cut the grooves called whales now into the sanforizing machines that'll pre-shrink the Fabrics it's in this way that many of the people of silaga spend their working days applying special skills to the handling and processing of a fiber that's special to their part of the country and for that matter the town of silaga and Avendale Mills are something special too for they've created more than just another Boom Town here the roots go deep the comr family that founded Avendale Mills wanted things like swimming pools for the kids it wanted Pleasant accommodations for visitors it wanted a good library to open new worlds to seeking Minds it wanted the finest Medical Care obtainable for every member of the community not only attention for the sick but preventive medicine for the healthy the best there was juvenile delinquency hardly among boys like these boys whose natural Vitality finds a natural outlet and wins awards for [Music] achievement yes it was inevitable that a prosperous industry would help bring prosperity to everyone in town that's the way things work not only do literacy rates go up and sickness rates go down but there's enough left over for what some people might look upon as plain frivolity but where the roots really go deep are in the home and thanks in large part to a company financing program today 85% of Avendale employees own their own homes many of them are Farm homes office Executives of companies large and small assemble for the 22nd annual Institute on Industrial relations sponsored by the National Association of Manufacturers together they'll work out the answers to tough problems whose solution will help not only employees and individual companies but the nation as a whole at informal sessions like this men from such widely separated points as New England and Hawaii pool their experiences the informality is carried over into problemsolving work clinics where Guided by conference leaders the talk turns to such matters as Government wage stabilization regulations Labor Relations and ways of developing employees into supervisors and Executives it's no cut and dried lecture course the leaders of Industry learn as much from each other as they do from discussion leaders but their thinking is stimulated by such basic questions as why is a person paid a salary or wage it's for what he does what he knows what he can get others to do when they break for coffee the talk continues and when they return to their offices and plants across the land we'll all benefit from the effort to further humanize employer employee relations and the promotion of understanding and teamwork in [Music] Industry inflation is not new it has existed since ancient times and has hit nearly every country in the world in America we've experienced inflation for the past Dozen Years inflation caused by government debt and easy credit policies which cut the value of our dollar nearly in half the way to stop inflation is to increase production reduce government spending curb private and public credit policies from making inflationary loans and put the cost of government including defense spending on a pay as we go basis by adopting a sound tax policy we must lick inflation [Music] [Applause] progress parade brings you a collection of true stories of America at work [Music] fishing on dry land what kind of a fish story is this yet it happens all the time wherever oil wells are [Music] drilled as far as this drilling rig is concerned everything seems to be operating smoothly that's trouble the trouble is 2 miles straight down down at the bottom of the drill hole 10,000 ft below the surface the drill pipe has broken off close to the drill bit the broken pipe with a bit now has to be fished out of the drill hole [Music] and so they send for a specialist a specialist they call a fisherman meanwhile the drilling pipe above the brake all 10,000 ft of it must be removed disconnected and stacked aside whenever a broken pipe drill bit or anything else is lost down in the drill hole it is nicknamed the fish with the arrival of the fish man a specialist who makes his living by fishing in drill holes a most unusual operation Begins the fisherman sizes up the only evidence available the jagged edge of the broken drill pipe he can't predict whether it'll take 2 days or 2 weeks or even if he can catch the fish but fish he will it's that kind of a job 3 days and many fishing attempts later they try another special fishing tool maybe this one will work but they have no way of being certain the trick is to make sure the tool is lowered the 2 miles directly over the the fish down it goes in the end of 10,000 ft of pipe expertly manipulated by the fisherman who has tons of massive machinery and equipment at his command when he has the tool 2 miles down he feels his way carefully cautiously he uses the gauges as his eyes experience as his guide down down it goes over the stuck fish until there it is caught 2 mil underground but will the tool hold the fish all the way up here's the [Music] payoff yes the fish is caught our Dryland fisherman has saved this $100,000 drilling investment now the drilling can continue to see if it strikes [Music] oil baby demands Comfort all right and if he doesn't get it a formal protest is soon [Music] registered every baby is a born expert as far as knowing what's good for him he approves only the most gentle products expressly prepared for his well-being baby oil for example it is so pure and Mild that during the infant period it is often used instead of water for his back [Music] who would think that from this crude oil pure baby oil is refined but to extract baby oil and the hundreds of other useful products from petroleum after it is taken out of the ground requires as many as 10 different refining processes a fantastic amount of investment equipment scientific skill and complex engineering competing oil companies spend over150 million every year in Progressive research just to develop and improve new products from from petroleum for baby and the rest of us whenever a liquid boils you just naturally think that it's hot but this liquid can't be hot it's sitting on a cake of ice boiling on ice and vaporizing producing a gas that burns this unusual liquid is LP gas one of the hundreds of products from petroleum in many homes it is one of our most useful handymen it Cooks our food Heats our water and our home for the farmer it can generate his power warm his chicks fuel his tractor and control weeds through flame cultivation and what of industrial uses well LP gas serves among other things textile Industries through drying processes it can operate that Workhorse of the factory the forklift [Music] truck and he treat Metals for a thousand industrial uses LP gas prevents railroad switches from freezing and thus keeps the trains running [Music] one important use is providing the cooking fuel for restaurants throughout the nation last year 6 billion gallons of LP gas were transported and sold in the United States now how would you transport this liquid fuel that boils well below the freezing point of water the oil company solved the problem by developing specially built tank cars and tank trucks permitting LP gas to be handled and stored in liquid for Form 1 cubic foot of this amazing liquid becomes 300 cubic feet of vapor which will do the work of 750 cubic feet of natural gas a major achievement of the competing oil companies has been the development of techniques for successfully transporting and handling liquid fuel in great volume and at low cost here's a man who wears two hats of course he's only wearing one hat now that familiar one you see every time you drive into your neighborhood service station perhaps you've already found out he's one of the most conscientious citizens of your town in addition to his regular occupation he may be also a member of one of the reserve components of the Armed Forces another service station dealer might be a member of of your local civil defense organization or one of those fire readers on the volunteer fire department perhaps your dealer is an unpaid member of the Board of Education or serves on the advisory committee for civic [Music] Improvement foreigners touring our country have commented many times that service station dealers are the most American amans they meet they say the dealers are cheerful and deficient they reflect the freedom of opportunity we cherish so highly that's why we say your neighborhood service station dealer is truly a man who is qualified to wear two hats here are some sick oysters just what made them sick and just how they are to be cured are questions that stumped an entire oyster industry the trouble started down in Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico where the Louisiana oyster fisherman claimed that oil production was killing off the local oyster population the oil companies didn't agree but they decided to look into the matter so they started started what developed into a $2 million oyster research program scientists went out to the bedding grounds where they collected buckets full of oysters and then brought them to a special oyster Research Center of Texas A&M college one of the Laboratories established for the oyster survey by the oil companies in the research laboratory every type of condition is created for the oyster patients a blanket of crude oil is poured directly on the water water is jetted through oil for 6 months oil drilling mud was emptied into the water even Dynamite charges were exploded near test oyster [Music] beds every possibility was explored after years of study and progress the results were in the test oysters showed no ill effects from oil even under conditions which far exceeded those ever present during oil production as a matter of fact the test oyers were so happy they brought forth new generations to share their lot they never had it so good well then if this wasn't killing the oysters what was it took time and money to find out and the scientists continued their progress oyster tissues were prepared for intensified examination and study no possibility was overlooked [Music] finally the real enemies are isolated the most vicious villain of the lot is dermocystidium marinum a species of fungus that is bent on destroying the Louisiana oyster it was further found that natural changes in the Gul coast and man-made improvements such as levies together with climatic changes were seriously affecting the proper mixture of fresh and salt water in the Oyster betting grounds all of these factors were contributing to the reduction of oyster populations now that the true causes were known action could be taken these major conclusions of the oyster research program are cheerfully turned over to the oyster industry why you may ask why were the results of $2 million worth of research given to the oyster industry it's because oil companies believe that maintaining good neighbors is just good business as long as business and industry are free to lend a helping hand to each other then everyone benefits [Music]
