e that that oh hello hello hello stuff is burning um yeah so the it's great that fire extinguish or extinguisher worked but the fumes from uh the oil from a Transformer which potentially could be ladened with pcbs not good for anybody in the area and it's certainly not the drinking water we have in North Carolina well in Raleigh there's uh this beautiful Greenway uh that has this beautiful kind of wetlands that you go across but it was right next to where they made Transformers and so it is a EPA super fun site so there's signs everywhere saying don't eat any fish out of this Lake um yeah it's not good uh this uh so we watch old 16mm films here uh and that was from uh collection uh the Nelson and um silent but you know who love you know who doesn't love a big fire um this is almost the antithesis this is uh squib products and it could have been a film strip squib aspirin disintegrates rapidly to give you quick relief yet it is firmly compressed so it will not crumble and several days during the year that you just won't feel like moving but you've got to make yourself if you're lying down let's try this exercise just stretching way out this is a good one to do in the morning now stretch with the right hand and left foot way out and and now stretch with the OV one way out this will give us blood circulating and give us a little more energy and stretch and stretch and stretch now I get up on the side of the couch and let's do a little stretching for the waistline want you to put your hands over your head and stretch and then go down and touch your toes way down then over the head and stretch and down and touch the toes and stretch over the head stretch way back pull the tummy in and over and touch the toes way over the head and touch now let's listen up the shoulders I think this exercise makes you feel so good just put your shoulders way up and then around make a little circle lift them way up and then around way up and around way up and around and up and around and up and around doesn't that feel wonderful okay now here's something else that'll make you feel good taking some deep breathing exercises let's do about 20 of them take your breath in breathe from way down inside now blow it out if you'd like to reduce or firm your double chin i' like you to try this exercise or if you want to keep from having one let's hold her head erect now lend your head back open your mouth and try to bring your bottom lip up over the top one that's the way now twist to the left side andh the head back and now do the same thing now to the right side and girls that's the one you should do every day if you want to keep that double chin away let's get up and work on the hands this is a exercise that I got in modeling school and I find it necessary to do quite often to keep the hands limber and graceful I want you to put your hands about like this and go up and then Le down with the left hand you lead up with the right hand like this just go up and down up and down and up and down and up and down this hand exercise should be practiced every day up and down and up and down and up and down and up and down and I know everybody wants a small waistline so let's put our hands out to the side put our feet apart and let's twist go down and touch the right foot uh right left foot to the left hand in reverse and one and two and three and four and five and six and seven and eight nine and 10 now for the 10 minutes hold on to a chair and bring the right knee into the tummy hold for a second and then back down and the left knee in tighten your tummy as you bring your knee into the tummy and down and one and two and three and four and five and six and seven and eight and nine and 10 another one for the waistline hands out to the sides put your feet apart and let's twist to the left side and twist to the right and one two and three four four and five and six and seven 8 and 9 10 11 and 12 now down on the floor want kneel beside of a chair of the couch on your left knee and we're going to work on the hips when I say work on the hips this time it's going to mean to shape and to firm or reduce let's bring the right knee into the tummy and stretch back kick way back then into the tummy and stretch back a girls let's do 10 on the right side and then 10 on the left side and you count well let's work on the inside of the thighs want you to put your feet together like this spread your legs apart and just try to go down to touch the floor I know you can't make it just push your legs down like this one and 2 3 four five and six 78 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 and 20 now for the tummy and the thighs this one you want to lie down flat and spread your legs apart this really you can really feel it in the tummy spread your legs apart then lift them up off the floor and put them together keep your toes pointed out this works on the inner thighs also aart and together and one and two and three and four four and five and six and seven and 8 and 9 and 10 11 and 12 now for your girls with a hip problem that want to reduce want you to sit up and spread your hands apart straighten your knees Out roll over on the left side and then roll over on the right side and one two and three four and five 6 7 8 and 9 10 11 11 12 13 and 14 now roll over on your side we're going to work on the thighs all the way up to here let's P Charles lift the thighs off go forward and then back and forward and back and one two and three four and five six and seven 8 nine and 10 11 and 12 the same thing on the other side roll over and one two and three four and five six 7 8 9 10 11 and 12 13 and 14 now let's work on the calves I want you to get a chair and you'll need a book this is for reducing so all your girls that want to reduce your calves put the book down the floor step on it with your feet like this let your heels go off the back and go up and down let's do this one about 20 times because we want to reduce and one and two and three and four and five and six and seven eight and nine and 10 now girls go ahead and count on to 10 I think of large percent of my ask for something for repr proportioning the body you want to know how to build up the bust at the same time reduce the lower part I'm already getting lots of letters saying the girls have accomplished so much and repr proportioning their body and you can do the same thing if you work at it now here's what we do we do so many exercises for increasing the bust we don't do a lot of repetitions except we do 20 with the ones we do just pushing like this but with the books we do only 10 but we do a lot of repetitions on the part that we want to reduce so if you want to reduce your hips we'll do a lot of hip exercises and every other day we'll do bust exercise now this bust exercise can be done uh every day and 20 times each day but that's all now put your fingers together and put your arms out to the side and just push as hard as you can you should be able to see it feel it in the bus and after the show's over I want you to take your clothes off and watch yourself in the mirror and see what's happening push real hard and then relax push relax and push relax relax and push relax and push relax and push relax and push and relax and push and relax now this one also can be done 20 times but only once a day now you do all the exercises exactly the way I'll tell you or you can get bad results want you to put your hand over your head and then back down over the head and back down take a breath in and then blow it out I've seen a lot of girls overdevelop and I've seen that girls exercise for months and months and never get results only because they didn't know how to exercise as a matter of fact I was one of those years ago I'd work so hard and I couldn't get anywhere and it was only because I didn't know really what I was doing okay now this one again you can do it every day and 20 times now here's another one for the bus you can do every day now put your hands around your wrist like this the right hand around the left wrist and push and relax and push relax and push and relax and push and relax and push and relax now I'm going to give you another bust exercise but before we do we're going to do this one for the thighs put your feet apart go over to the right side as far as you can then over to the left and one two and three and four and five and six and seven and eight and nine and 10 now let's get a couple one for each hand or whatever you're using for the bust exercise and you need a couple pillows and get down the floor now remember this one can be done you can do it 10 times in rest and 10 more two or three times but don't do over 10 without resting and only do it every other day and put your books up like this and hands out to the side and then together well girls I'm sorry I don't have time to go ahead with you now this one as I said can be done 10 times don't you forget to join me tomorrow we'll have um there's some awkward uncomfortness uncomfortableness there but you know she made this uh and her company that was named after her you know I don't know if she ran it but I I think she probably did um she he uh was doing this until 1978 and had two TV shows that were syndicated uh this one was shot uh with video camera but then they did a kinoscope of it and the kinoscope then that was basically a a film camera aimed at a TV and what they she would do is you know they would make multiple copies of it on 16 and distribute it uh to networks or to TV stations all over the United States and so this would probably be shown in the morning um after the kids go to school the housewife can sit and watch this uh and you saw there were black segments so that's where ADS would be inserted and it would be ads for Debbie Drake things or for whatever the TV station wanted to to do um and I found a news article that she had surgery in 1986 uh she lived in Texas um and she had surgery for a shattered leg and a collapsed lung she didn't know she had a collapsed lung but she did have a shattered leg and they were like hey your lung isn't working so um and then I don't know when she she passed uh that I could not find information about she was also very sheepish about mentioning her age so um so behind me I have a film scanner uh oh Nathan thank you so much uh it's great to see you I'm sorry you're sick but thanks for the uh donation via the super thanks button uh so behind me uh this is uh movement exercises in physical education or it's no it's movement education in physical education uh enjoy [Music] movement is the language of action movement is basic to every action we perform whether we are children on the playground or adults in a work situation [Music] here on the playground children are engaging in their own choice of activity moving as they will and enjoying their own movement patterns because movement is so natural to Children teachers often Overlook the importance of teaching a sound basis for more efficient and expressive movement patterns such a basis can be provided by helping each child develop an awareness and understanding of how he moves where he moves in space and what his body can do this film is designed to show these three awarenesses and their use in developing efficient and expressive movement patterns in the gymnasium children are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities for the development of these movement principles in modern elementary schools physical education programs are conducted regularly with the development of efficient effective and expressive movement patterns as a major objective opportunity for observation as well as participation is essential in understanding movement patterns because children do like to move they need little encouragement yet they need much guided practice in creating the best patterns for each situation the beginning of each class is the time for movement practice what are some of the kinds of ideas children have some enjoy running K enjoys this kind of turning pattern some like jumping punching kicking turning twisting or running as children create repeat over and over and thoroughly enjoy their movement ideas the teacher gu gues individuals in their work and discusses the vocabulary of movement as the children rest in establishing this vocabulary of movement the initial step is that of developing an awareness of the self in the physical environment this awareness is transferred to game situations specifically children must be aware of themselves in relation to the area they are in and to the people in the area they must be aware of the equipment on the floor and of their Partners such an awareness is essential for this game of Buffalo Bill we find this also in tag in twos or any game certainly the children are alert looking for each other for the one to tag and for the One chasing them these children are discussing and sharing the movement patterns they enjoy Debbie says she would like to show her half flip bill says he likes to do splits Connie likes to run in circles and Billy enjoys melting the body is a fascinating instrument to children they like to find out what theirs can do even though the first awareness continues to be present and practiced the awareness of the body and its cap abilities is important too watch these two first graders as you watch them this time see if each makes the same shape he made the first time while in the air can each repeat the same Landing he did the first time they are able to repeat these activities because of their awareness of themselves in relation to the equipment of their own capabilities and of their concentration on control this is control and efficient movement this is practice toward control and efficient movement children in this fourth grade class are working on a movement pattern which involves a Twist a stretch a swing and a collapse Jeff and Linda are showing their finished pattern to the rest of the class these children are working on a combination of more than four different movement possibilities can you see seven part parts to these patterns that Chuck and Eric have created Run and freeze twist collapse roll balance and rest the third emphasis is awareness of the movement components which these boys and girls are using speed space force and control Linda is empty emphasizing the use of speed in this movement is Debbie emphasizing speed space force control all four what of bills movement and billies obviously this hang of brues emphasizes strength which is an element of force but what of Arts apparatus is an excellent activity for developing awareness of these components of movement look for concentration on the components as these children work matching action of the one on the apparatus by the one on the floor demands concentration careful analysis of the activity itself and cooperation solving problems such as do something high off the apparatus and follow that by a smooth but quick stunt allows for individuality creativity and makes the best use of the components of movement practice is essential in understanding that Force means heavy or light that time means fast or slow that space means direct or straight and indirect or crooked and that efficient movement demands control not lack of control movement without discussion of the what why and how of movement would be purposeless children like to discuss their own kinds of patterns teacher student discussion is important to find out what children like to do why they like to do it and how they like to move this type of discussion is also valuable as a review of material learned Mr vanata has been reviewing the movement components with the fourth grade now let's listen as they bring out ideas on the self in the physical environment you know that say it's a tag game you have to watch out for the it and the other people so you don't bump into them okay awareness of other people person that's it or other people involved in the game uh Jane uh there boundaries if you're playing a boundary game you'd probably be out if you went out of them and you might bump into equipment and somebody could get hurt pretty badly okay you mentioned two things in awareness of the boundary lines and awareness of uh equipment now is there some other thing involved Jane well don't uh when you're playing don't run uh don't run into a wall or something okay the boundary may be a wall rather than a line so you have to be aware of the boundary if it's a wall all right I think that pretty well covers a physical environment now the next awareness that we are concerned with is the awareness of the body as capabilities Peter will you put that on the board for us now what are some of the uh capabilities of the body what can the body do Sally well it can twist and collapse all right twist and collapse Bruce well you can uh run and then freeze run and freeze Priscilla you can balance and throw balance and throw all right that covers several of things the body can do it can do a lot more it can do combinations of some of those things this chart shows the continuous relationship among the three awarenesses with the movement pattern the teacher presents only one awareness at a time but recognizes that all three are present and equally important skills for everyday activities whether they be placed skills work skills or skills for emergencies will be effective efficient and expressive if we concern our teaching with the development of sound movement patterns these are the bases for our language of action movement is that language of action [Music] la [Music] so I will let you in on a little secret uh physical education films I actually appear in one as a little kid and it was for some uh a physical education grad student came and was filming us jumping over the vating horse is that what it's called um and so he he watched a bunch of kids do it and then he was like you're good like and so like me and like three other kids uh we ended up being filmed I don't know what ever happened to it but it's possible at some point you could find a how was was I 11 11-year-old skip uh going over a vaulton horse very skinny scrawny towheaded skip um there you go uh Pummel horse thank you Sean uh all right uh let's see what what are we looking at um I found another film about that the oil uh rig team and the safety problems and communication um this one's called flowline of understanding maybe this will answer the question about why one team had exemplary safety records and good morale and the other one didn't enjoy [Applause] how many times have you started what you thought would be a normal routine day that ended like this it happens to us all more than a few of us have spent many Restless hours wondering how we got into such a mess what went wrong how can the situation be corrected and prevented from happening again whether it's an equipment problem or a problem involving Personnel of course we could be talking about one of many problems and one of many causes but let's narrow it down to just one communication the flow line of understanding hardly a day goes by that there isn't some type of communication mixup in the field let's take a look around and see if anything that's happening would interest us this is Joe glass a new rough neck on one of the drilling rigs a new man on a new job has lots to learn and during his first few days on the job Joe was told lots of things by the other men the driller and the tool pusher one day Joe was called to help condition the mud but before he reached the mud house the tool pusher called him aside to talk to him about mud handling Joe was told to be careful when you're treating the mud with chemicals particularly costic when you're handling costic said The Pusher be sure always to check the wind direction so that the costic won't blow on you wear protective equipment such as goggles rubber apron and rubber gloves these items will keep you from getting burned seriously well mud conditioning was started and of course Joe went right to work what happened he was burned seriously around the eyes he hadn't worn the protective equipment and hadn't bothered to check the wind direction was this poor communication Joe had been told shown and warned the tool pusher had given thorough instructions for some reason the message hadn't soaked in why this is Rous about Bill Brown he's worked around here for several months no complaints about bill or his work he's always tried hard one day the Farm Boss instructed Bill to go to a certain lease and the words he used were take a meter out of service well Bill returned with the meter and when the Farm Boss found that Bill had brought the meter with him he blew his top he jumped on Bill for being so stupid and told him that the whole job merely consisted of shutting off three vowes that was what he meant when he said take the meter out of service but Bill did what he thought he had understood the Farm Boss to say for some reason he hadn't gotten the message correctly why maybe these sound like exaggerated cases but they actually happened and other similar cases happen every day I know that you can recall like examples but let's consider some other factors in the problem of giving and receiving information correctly a few careless or misunderstood words that are not clear in their meaning could lead to a lot of trouble maybe a foued Up Mud situation on a drilling rig or a serious injury any number of things could happen and if the truth was known a great percentage of our troubles could probably be traced to misunderstanding it may not be a case of unclear meaning of the spoken word only it could be that the information wasn't written clearly leaving you just as confused as before it could be the manner in which the order or instruction was given was not acceptable to the men for instance if the man in charge is not getting along with his men anything he says no matter how important is brushed off by the men and of course there are many other reasons that we could mention where does communication start and where does it end well that's a good question and let's see if we can figure it out we all know that major decisions and policies are made here and are carried out by all departments branches divisions in a company right on Down the [Music] Line however in important decisions are made at this field level too but they generally involve the group concerned with that particular Department other decisions involving a yet smaller group may be made here and so on down through the organization now how are all these decisions coordinated primarily through a well-planned communication system management relies on this man the supervisor to get the job to P the right information to his men but communication Works two ways it's the supervisor's job to get the information back up the line through the various levels of management clear to the top it is only in this way that everyone is kept informed [Music] what kind of information are we talking about well one type of information is a daily drilling report some others are production reports equipment order sheets maybe work Improvement suggestions or new safety suggestions all are forms of information but all are useless and unless they are understood remembered relayed correctly and used the right way by the right people how important it is that we convey the right information with the right meaning in order to have decisions and policies carried out the supervisor must receive and give information the success of the job or policy depends greatly on how well the supervisor understands and the manner in which he gets across the idea in information to his men if the correct attitude has been established among the workers an attitude for wanting to learn and do things correctly the supervisor's job is much easier this is true at all levels of the company efficiency depends on how much information is given and the manner in which it is given but don't forget that someone has to be listening to what is said and the supervisor should make sure that he is understood the oil industry is a big one composed of hundreds of companies why is it that so many of these companies can operate so efficiently is Communications an important part how big a part does it play in any company operation you remember the cases of Joe glass and Bill Brown who actually was at fault in these cases what causes Communications to fail is there a remedy what can we as supervisors do to improve Communications among our men so what's interesting is that you know these films existed in other areas and the fact that uh they felt like they had to make one specifically for people working in the oil rig industry uh is interesting to me I I I think it's all it's the same information they and they probably who made this probably watched other films and said oh well we're just going to do it with uh people who are working oil rigs um and managing people that work in oil rigs but um so yeah um Kevin uh mentioned in the comments that he met uh Joe glass in a video game uh I used to work at the arcade at NC State for two years three years my first two years two and a half years at NC State and they had punch out so every day glass Joe um so yes that resonates with me uh in a kind of nightmarish way because it plays in my subconscious um so here's an aside related to that it has absolutely nothing to do uh one of the cool things is so I was working there and there was always you know people would come up because they you know something ate their quarter or whatever um somebody came up and was like Spy Hunter is doing something really weird and so I go up to it and basically what happened is and I don't know if if some of you remember plane Spy Hunter but it's basically it's a top down like you're driving this sports car and you have you can set oil traps and there's other things you can do uh but one of the things you can do is drive into this boat house and then you come out on a boat and then you're driving down the river well what had happened was they had found a glitch and they were essentially it drove into the boat house then they were able to drive the boat house so they were driving The Boat House kind of like half on the river half uh on the road but because it was this weird glitch there weren't any cars or boats so they were just kind of stuck there um so there you go that's my my story uh the other story uh of course uh was it my freshman year no it was my sophomore year um Ronald Reagan came to NC State and gave a speech uh which was just about basically about basketball um that's what got people excited so uh I was working in the games room which is next to the Student Center which is in the student center which was next to the uh Coliseum or the uh um where rean was speaking so uh a whole week before there were Secret service people kind of walking around and you could tell they were Secret Service people cuz they had like a little ear thing um and uh they I caught two of them playing uh duck hunt and they were real good I was like wow they were just like so all right there's my two anecdotes I have other anecdotes about um working at the games room this is long before I was collecting films um what I would do is just do my homework um I didn't even play pool I was I'm not very
