e that that is that oh is is hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and that was some raw footage of the manufacturing process at this um Factory um I couldn't quite figure out based on me looking at the screen periodically what they were making but there were some awesome Machinery there and this kind of made me think like uh I don't play the lottery often uh generally when it hits a billion I'm like okay well we'll give it a shot so one of the here's some of the things that I would uh spend money on one I would uh um what was the first thing oh yeah buy this shopping center that's near my house where the Alamo Draft House is and um take it over and move the archive to where the Family Dollar used to be that's one two uh I would go to Salsbury North Carolina and arrange to have a Salsbury Stak parade and have all the schools uh March in a parade um celebrating Salsbury Stak uh three I would probably get a train like my own personal train and I would have it would be very similar to The Wild Wild West TV show where there would be special tricks and things in the train car uh and finally I would create a network where it would be similar to ESPN but instead of sporting events it would just be assembly line footage and I would hire people to be uh do kind a color commentary on it as they're watching it uh and you know somebody who's keeping score um and so that would just be a whole network work of assembly line footage uh people watching so there you go so that's my uh my wish list if I won a billion dollars um so now you know now you know where my brain is um and we'd still do the show that's what would be so great about this I'd still do the show but it would be from a train okay uh so that film came from the Nelsons uh who are film collectors who are uh used to be based in Houston but are moving to Oregon uh and they sent us a bunch of films to scan for them um and so I'm showing them uh so this next film is also from their collection it's called the winning team are you part of it let's find out enjoy [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] la [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the field of sports teamwork builds the winner the petroleum industry likewise must build its winners on teamwork a team consisting of thousands of people gasoline and oil and grease and a 100 other products of petroleum are available at low cost because of teamwork the refinery Works smoothly with the marketer and the supplier of crude oil working Round the Clock to maintain an adequate Supply the pipelines keep a delicate balance between the refinery and the producing Wells while assorted Enterprises with Divergent aims and desires blend their efforts to supply the world's demand for oil an increasing demand the world over this network of Cooperative action appears complicated but basically it is simple it is as simple as two routs carrying a joint of pipe it comes from individuals working together giving Mutual [Music] Aid call it what you like teamwork cooperation Collective action it gets the job done no game of sports was ever played with greater team Precision than these men show it's done day after day man depends on man there are no cheering thousands here a job well and safely done is the reward of teamwork they are playing Play for Keeps too full cooperation is the strongest shield against constant perils and impending threats to life and limb and property cooperation does not just happen it is born of necessity nurtured by a willingness to get along by morale and directed by leaders men who with or without title manage to get individuals to give their best to a common cause men like Tom Riley working at Grassroots teamwork he is responsible for two Well Servicing units on him and hundreds like him rests the job of getting people to work together willingly as Tom watches servicing unit number five in action he takes pride in noting that here are four individuals all just naturally different working smoothly and cheerfully together they have achieved a level of teamwork that makes them hard to beat there are few units in the district that can equal them in pulling a well or setting a pump watch the smoothness with which work flows from one man to another can this be one of the reasons why their record is scarcely ever marred by accident can there be any doubt about a relationship between accident prevention and cooperation Tom Riley thinks about this as he observes servicing unit number six the equipment is the same as unit number five yet they're not getting the job done Riley sees it in the record well after well they are taking 20% longer than normal he sees it on the job there is not the steady Rhythm things are [Music] jerky for some reason there is tension in the atmosphere no cheerfulness sloppy [Music] teamwork Tom hears it from the men this r about is saying I want to keep on working for the company but isn't there some way I can get transferred out of that gang friction but why why why is unit 5 a good working team why is unit 6 a ragged working team most of all Tom is asking how can I help those fellas to work together as a team a good team a winning [Music] [Applause] team they're not going to tell us oh man um there there's a couple more in this uh series it looks like but I don't know if it answers that question I don't know if it picks up but uh fascinating uh te- morale is low accident's high everybody doesn't want to work there it's it's really really cool uh so this is uh traditionally uh when I've shown films like this like why is you know they ask questions at the end and why is it a problem it's generally the manager's problem and they were part of this uh series made by Alcoa and by Calvin uh distributed some of them by uh McGraw Hill well here's another McGraw Hill film about Labor Relations called grievance hearing maybe maybe we can pretend like this is a sequel to uh the winning team there's a grievance enjoy [Music] this is Mary Carson she has missed 6 weeks of work due to illness now she's reporting in for physical before going back to her job in the assembly Department only it seems that Mary's records are [Music] gone yes Mary failed to renew her leave of absence which at her plant is taken AO dramatically to mean that she has resigned without notice the nurse suggests that if Mary wants her job back she should see the Personnel man but Mary anxiously asks for a pass to see her Foreman however her Foreman tells Mary that they hired someone to replace her a week ago she'd better start all over again at the personnel office hi Mary hi Bill welcome back to the old meal kid what's cooking you look a little bit depressed well I was out 6 weeks so they fired me well didn't you see a foreman sure automatic quick they call it you know the rules you're a steward well didn't you telephone no I didn't didn't even think of it I was just too sick well that's enough for me you're much too good a worker to lose because of some arbitrary rule we're going to go back to see your Foreman but the foreman while very sympathetic says that according to the contract Mary has resigned and her old job has been filled by another girl Mary is a victim but the written contract between the union and the company is clear her job is gone however Mary's Steward is going to fight for her he's making it a formal grievance and taking the matter upstairs while the foreman sends his copy of the grievance form to his superintendent the steward hands his copy to the chief steward at his first opportunity and at his first opportunity the chief steward storms into the superintendent's office hey Johnson how about this Mary Carson you here again this makes a six time this week yeah and if necessary I'll make it 20 why don't you get off my neck and let me get some work done Mary is a victim in this battle of stubborn Wills the Rights and Wrongs of her case are being ignored that's what happens when personalities Clash that's why we need grievance procedures so the person with the problem won't be forgotten simply because opposing sides refuses to remain calm obviously no grievance was ever settled at a time like this so fortunately for Mary her case went up into the final stage to a hearing in the Personnel man's office some days later the Personnel man being more detached and less personally involved in the issues at stake makes an excellent chairman for any grievance hearing CL manager he called to say he'd be a little late oh here he is now sorry if I H you up hi your teammates present at this one besides the Personnel man as chairman are the plant manager and the union grievance committee composed of its own chairman and two other members now gentlemen we're ready if you are uh Mr Saunders and I have gone over this we both know Mary from what's down here it looks like a pretty clear case I puzzled what's this grievance about well we think there's a lot of Merit to this case first of all Mary's a good worker and she's got three years seniority with us ain't that right that's right well then you can't let her go without a thought that ain't the way people treat each other but Bob now wait a second Mary is being penalized for being honor she could have told you she phoned in but the truth is she was so sick she couldn't even lift her head now how do you expect to remember such technical details like could have toned it was a major operation she was in the hospital 3 weeks as long as that oh yes we have the doctor's better on that are you finished Bob no I'd like to sum up if you don't mind now we ain't saying that Mary didn't break a rule technically Mary's at fault technically but our point is none of the circumstances that she was very very ill and because she is a good worker and because she has three years of seniority with us we object to having her kicked around just because of an arbitrary rule even if it isn't a contract but Bob you're asking us to renegotiate the contract we're not asking to renegotiate the contract we're just asking for a little justice but Bob hold it I didn't interrupt you when you were talking okay okay go on according to the contract Mary Carson automatically resigned we all know that we don't deny it and a new girl was hired to replace her now it's no secret to you fellas that business is down a little at present we can't take on any new help we haven't a single requisition in Personnel not one so should we take Mary back and fire this new girl is that Justice well there must be some place for I ain't asking to give away the joint look this ain't a legal case take the human point of view she's a good worker ain't right now listen we like Mary she's a nice girl and we'd like to have her back if we could find a place for her and if we could get around changing that contract but we're not going to have you throwing that up in our faces forever as a precedent well I'm glad to know that you're taking Mary back now there's one more point and it's a very important Point as you know Mary has been waiting around seven working days while his case has been going through the grievance Machinery so we think you should get her back pay for those days just a moment we haven't even taken her back yet and now you're asking those seven days weren't her fault they were yours wait wait we haven't even taken her back at all and now you've added something brand new to the case I don't go for that back pay stuff that's the way you feel about it I guess we better stick rigidly to the terms of the contract now you're asking us to pay a reward for the violation of the contract but it wasn't her fault technically it was her fault she actually quit according to the terms of the contract and she's been replaced by another girl until you dragged pay into this discussion I was inclined to go along with you and take her back if we could find a place for her but now I'm inclined the other way well Mary says she wants her back pay and that's all her is to it are you going to force this case into arbitration for a few lousy bucks come on hold on a minute Bob I know Mary Carson and I don't think she means that well I know she does she told me so a half hour ago all right let's bring her in here and let her speak for herself okay well okay can we reset for 10 or 15 minutes sure how about a cup of coffee for every well IA my coffee's on you Bob well Mary that's about it the manager says he's willing to get you back to work if he can but you say you won't accept a job without getting back paid for those seven days you missed is that the way you really feel about it well I I sure could use the money but Mary we're not even sure we can find you a job right now and if you insist on this money we can't even try and that's about it well then I don't I mean I'll just take the job then you will take me back again won't you I object to that you're threatening her Mary don't take any stuff like that from him oh listen let's cut it out Mary under Clause 56 of the labor agreement you forfeited your job when you failed to renew your leave of absence correct and as you fellas very well know we haven't been hiring there just simply may be no job at all and another thing there been four similar cases okay okay Simon agree so don't give her the money Mary would you settle for your job back mhm four similar cases all turned down but this case is a little different I know you'll hold it as a precedent against us if we reinstate her absolutely not no hell no what do you think George are there any jobs coming up at all well I know there's nothing in our old department but there might be something in some other department in that same division it's a pretty big one you know you haven't got any requisitions to hire from the superintendent's office no but I'll give him a call right now Hello Alex yes say uh can you use a good girl anywhere in your division no I'm not kidding you know her Mary Carson you can swell Department 6 next week say um Alex do me a favor and get me off the hook uh take her on right now she's been waiting for over a week you know there sickly grievance are you kidding you signed the form you ought to remember that said the one you battled over with the chief stor well you naturally would remember the fight and not the case maybe now you guys will try settling some of your own grievances instead of making us poor Personnel slaves do you work for you okay say uh about SM Carson I'll send her over the first thing in the morning uh Jack George Sanders is right here and we'll take care of the paperwork many thanks Alex goodbye well Bob you satisfied now guess I doesn't hey how about you Mary it's a different job you know pay rate the same yes you satisfied oh yes I I just want to get back to work thank you thank you all very much well back to the gind aren't you forgetting something B no precedent here right well uh we said we put it in writing didn't we no you didn't but we want it in writing let's do it right now grievance settled employee reinstated no break in seniority we'll concede that effective date March 12th it's understood that this settlement has no precedent for any future settlement under Clause 56 of the labor agreement okay yeah okay with you fellas suits me okay by another grievance settled like many others this one one involved a conflict between the formal terms of a labor agreement and the human problems of an employee and because the union and management representatives are also human it involved a clash of personalities in this case can be seen the wisdom of having several steps in a grievance procedure so the employee gets every chance to be heard both sides acted a little both took positions that gave them a chance for give and take bargaining which in the end secured from Mary the fair treatment she deserved with Good Will on the part of Labor and management problems in human relations that can never be covered in a labor agreement or a book of rules will through grievance procedures continue to be brought to a satisfactory and just conclusion [Music] all right Simon lree wow that uh um that Steward was great uh yeah for me this feels like it's a um soap opera but uh with labor relations and there's got to be more in this series I'm going to have to look for more um they're not as as small and as provocative as those uh Alcoa management ones which I love because they're so short and they always end with the manager going look what happened so those are great all right we're going to shift gears a little bit of that narrator in that last film was reading every so many words pause reading so many words pause reading so many words uh this next film has a narrator that we know who's talking about plants and the vast irony is years later uh you knew him uh because he talked about plant among other things enjoy this is uh a gift from Dirk [Music] in Amsterdam Holland a canal boat makes its way [Music] home Dirk has lived on the boat all his for a living [Music] Durk has discovered an interesting relation between the size of the pebble and the size of the ri why don't you play with those sweet little girls and don't be rude with them next month is my mother birthday I'll buy her a present with this you can buy very beautiful things with so much money what is very beautiful whatever is very nice that's what [Music] father what is very beautiful well it is many things Durk what things father sometimes a ship sailing on the water that can be very beautiful mostly only ships are Beautiful People Too can be beautiful your mother for example now don't you go confusing the child very beautiful is usually something that's very big very beautiful things can be any size huge or tiny sometimes many big beautiful things are not as beautiful as one small beautiful thing I'll tell you a story to explain it once upon a time hundreds of years ago there lived a rich nobleman right here in Holland now this nobleman loved beautiful things and so he made a strange bargain with a farmer he gave the farmer his prize roosters a bar of his finest wine barrels of flour and sacks of wheat barley oy cows and sheep and three of the fastest horses in the land he gave away all these goods for one small thing all this for one tulip bulb smaller than your fist all of that for one little bow oh it was very very special when it was planted in the ground and watered it grew up into a most beautiful tulip a red tulip with Lacy petals trimmed with black oh it would make your heart tingle to look at it I wish I could see that beautiful thing what was its name father oh I remember now yes my father told me the story he said they called it the firebird tulip I wish I could see that beautiful flower next week we will go on an outing to the kirken Hof Gardens where you will see the most beautiful tulips in the world I'm sure we'll be able to see a Firebird too huh [Applause] he couldn't fall asleep thinking about ships and castles and noblemen but most of all about the firebird tulip and that's what he will give his mother a Firebird tulip [Music] it is a lovely ride to the kirkhoff gardens past vast fields of tulips hent daffodils of every color and shape kicken Hof Gardens the great show place where the bulb Growers display their flowers in a natural setting [Music] where are the firebird tulips they haven't bloomed yet too early in the season this is not acceptable to Dirk be patient maybe we will find an earth early one for hours they wandered through the gardens a garden full of lovely flowers but no fireberd [Music] come here Durk maybe we will find a Firebird later in fact I'm sure we will they are all beautiful tulips dir one of them who can say which is more beautiful than the other some people like one kind some another to me every tulip is beautiful it is like the fingers of your hand you can't say you like one finger better than another can you I love my thumb best and sometimes I like my pinky but best of all I love my thumb Dirk would like to look at more tulips he is warned don't stay away too long don't go too far and don't get lost [Music] he found many magnificent varieties and even tulips that didn't look like tulips but not the fire bird and now he's very tired [Music] [Applause] what are you doing here little boy are you lost I am looking for the most beautiful tulip in the world the firebird have you ever seen a Firebird then how do you know it is the best because my father told me all tulips are beautiful right some are just different true different but who can say which is better the firebird is the best you see these three tulips all the same but each one a little different now I say this one is the nicest if your father were here he might say this is the nicest and you you might pick this one as the Nic this this one is the best my father always picks the best The Gardener led him through the greenhouse where over a thousand varieties of tulips are grown [Music] I [Music] here are the Firebirds where where are the flowers haven't come up yet in another week or two maybe well I was wishing maybe the smallest one the very smallest I can pay you for it well where would we be if every little boy came here and bought a tulip pretty soon all we would have is grass huh hey son come back I was thinking I might give you one as a present isn't that a good idea I must pay for it my father said a man gave away horses and cattle and gold and velvet clothing for just one bulb of the [Music] firebird you won't need a receipt [Music] [Music] it was 2 hours later and they were getting getting worried I told you not to let him go he probably fell into the canal why did I ever tell him that story about [Music] tulips look I found the tulip the one in the story that's good but we've got to go home now he watched and nursed it very carefully every day occasionally he took it outside for a breath of fresh air [Music] a sudden shower caught him [Music] unawares it grew very [Music] slowly but one day [Music] this most beautiful is for [Music] you I got to say uh hidden grievance is more dramatic to be like that kind of fable weird yeah um yeah it's so weird they're like let's create a narrative to explain why tulips are so wonderful and beautiful and then we'll dub it into English uh but we'll have Eddie Albert um Do It um yeah so strange all right so behind me I have a film uh scanner set up and this one we're going to jump ahead it's going to be whip lashy teenagers concerned about the problem of drug and and alcohol abuse as part of the Nationwide Chemical People project this program encourages new lines of communication in a parents underground guide to understanding teenagers hi I'm Sarah purcel and I'm Clark Brandon welcome to a parents underground guide to understanding teenagers we call it an underground guide because we have some unusual approaches to the subject and because we're here to guide you through the strange foreign territory of your teenager's life we're not going to hammer on what you already know that literally millions of kids today are drinking and trying drugs and that it's not just mild partying or an occasional fling and it's not just in certain kinds of neighborhoods and not just the bad kids the truth is a majority of high school and Junior High kids and even some elementary school kids are getting their hands on alcohol tranquilizers marijuana and a lot of them are getting into trouble well we're not going to come up with hard and fast foolproof answers either those just don't exist but we are going to look at some inside information for dealing with teenagers who have a drinking and drug problem our inside information comes from the experience of parents like you as well as from the experts the counselors the teachers everyone who's been out there trying to help these kids and we're going to talk about some approaches you parents might want to consider attitudes that have worked for some parents actions that have worked for others I think you'll see what I mean if you stay tuned to a parent's underground guide to understanding teenagers well this sort of thing just simply doesn't happen at our house drink oh not my son I don't know why you even bother to talk to him about it since he's perfectly incapable of such Behavior well I certainly don't pry into his Affairs oh he may come in late sometimes at night kids do and and he may oversleep sometimes in the morning and that's perfectly normal in the growing years oh and anyway he's always so thirsty when he gets up that it's perfectly clear hasn't been drinking the night before that child can drink a gallon of water when he wakes up how do I know what my daughter is doing all the time you don't want to be too overprotective you just hope for the best maybe I don't ask certain kinds of questions because I really don't want to know the answers but I tell her that she should call on me whenever she needs me and I'll drop whatever I'm doing really you know how life is today everybody's so busy running here running there we pass each other in the kitchen and she'll need $10 here $10 there and I don't always know for what but I don't want to know everything you know you got to give them a little room you can't push them too hard you just hope it will all work out well if I interfere it just causes trouble who needs it you know my kids aren't any different from other kids I remember what it was like to be a teenager you you don't get enough sleep and uh or you borrow money from your friends I mean I know my kids allowances certainly isn't paying for all those records they have I know that you know at that time of life your personality changes you well you want to be alone more you you get moody I mean that's normal we're not criticizing anyone for wanting to turn away it's a common reaction but when you find yourself making excuses for your kid and they begin to sound thin even to you maybe it's time to consider the first piece of some good inside information admit the problem that's right owning up is the first step a caring parent can take to help his kid when a parent denies her something wrong it makes it a lot easier for a young person to continue denying the problems too and it's true that no teenager likes to be told off for his alcohol or drug abuse but he's not likely just to come clean all by himself or say yeah M and Dad I drink I do drugs and I'm getting messed up we're expecting a lot from parents watching this show we're saying straight out that you have to take the initiative there has to be an honest confrontation don't worry about offending your kid or making him mad at you there's nothing offensive when you're making an effort to save your child's life Teenage may not admit it even to each other but deep down most of them really do want guidance they want their parents to be parents otherwise there's just too much responsibility on teenagers and they don't want that much no matter what they say of course once you do admit the problem you could go too far in the other direction understandably you might Panic at first here's what we mean when my baby started acting strange I I didn't give it a thought kids rebel I rebelled I did what I thought was the right thing I left her alone I wanted to help of course but she made it very clear she didn't want my help it got worse and worse it was horrible she showed up drunk at Thanksgiving drunk or something else it was bad enough being mortified in front of her grandparents having to handle her father's reaction but the worst part she was such a monster slovenly slurring her words saying ugly things on purpose there it was my baby the drunk I was frightened it was like being in an earthquake nothing to hold on to I couldn't think straight so what was I supposed to do I'd lived my whole life for the kid right you think I work the way I do because I like driving myself into an early grave I take pressure all the time I work with idiots let me tell you just so I can come home to peace and quiet and a loving family H that has to be a joke this deaf mute living off me and never a decent word I just couldn't figure it couldn't figure it stupid I guess just never occurred to me that he was stoned all the time so what was I supposed to do live with that in my own house no sir he's out he's out he's out until he gets off that stuff I'm not having a loser around just choosing to throw his life away and making a fool out of me right no more he's out in his ear I won't have him around I can't have him around I know you'll agree with me that those two have done something that we all do overreact so here's an underground guide tip some additional Insight information Panic isn't the answer overreacting means losing self-control losing your temper the professionals who specialize in these problems will tell you that making you lose your temper is the teenage abuser's first weapon when you lose your temper your self-control you temporarily lose the chance to help so you may have to step back from the problem maybe discuss it with other parents going through the same thing find out if they've had similar problems even with movies and television I just didn't pick up on it at first well the truth is I didn't want want to just another phase I kept telling myself well with me I was just half listening I'd be doing something and I'd overhear my daughter on the phone and maybe I did hear on some level that she'd looted out in history class but it didn't register if I thought about it I probably thought that it was teenagers slang for being bored or disgusted or I don't know besides I wasn't running around looking for clues for C I know what you mean it really was the farthest thing from my mind although I did pick up on some Clues here and there something I I would read or hear at the office but you know something I didn't even know there was anything wrong at my house when actually uh things have been out of hand for a long long time and I just hadn't seen it but finally I happened to discover some um paraphernalia that even I recognized but you know even though that was a shock that was not the real shock oh no the real shock was my son lying to me you know it was a sudden realization that there was this this huge gap between us tremendous Gap that he thought that we were some strangers that such strangers that I wouldn't I wouldn't even realize that he was lying lying well that maybe I wouldn't even care if he did lie and he wouldn't even admit that I had found a bong wouldn't talk about it well I had sense that something was wrong but then Matthew and I decided that it was just plain oldfashioned adolescence that this two would pass just like the terrible twos only it didn't well we knew that some something was wrong but we couldn't put our finger on it and then we realized that our son's friends had changed overnight and the whole atmosphere was different I mean before well before they'd been playing out in the backyard all sorts of sports and things like that and you know carrying on and joking and that sort of thing and then all of a sudden it became very quiet except for that loud blaring music coming from his room upstairs well you know I just finally got up my courage and asked I came right out with it are you drinking MH and what do I get the great stone wall he wouldn't admit anything it really hurt I was ready for the screaming and the shouting but nothing that was the hardest part well with my daughter was a little different you see she's always been the kind of class comic so it was all a big joke you know like no big deal you know how how kids like to put the groan in the word grownup well that was her attitude not mean or rude just oh Mom like I was too stupid or creaking with Ace to even understand her yeah you know I got the hurt feeling uh the uh wounded looks and the the silent sufferings as if I were uh way out of line for being so unreasonably suspicious all should say uh don't I have any rights around here tell you something it's a fabulous technique oh it's great and it works I mean it puts you way out to seea you just don't know what is the wisest thing to do the wisest thing is hard to know we promly wouldn't kid you about that but we are giving you what we believe is good inside information it won't work miracles and it's not easy advice in fact hear some news from the front that may not be astonishing whatever you do it won't be easy Once you make that tough decision to confront the problem you'll find yourself dealing with a lot of hostility and a lot of resentment from your own kids the experts tell us that parents will often take all kinds of evasive action when the tension around the house gets unbearable and sometimes all of the unpleasantness leads to confusion on the parents part there are times when it's the team rather than the parent who's really in control of the situation yes I try to keep up appearances I see to it that she gets her haircut and stays neat I wake her in time to go to school I even lie to the neighbors when the subject comes up goodness all I ask from her is that she tells me the truth I just want things peaceful so I do all the chores around the house that he should do I don't want any more scenes I bitterly resent the money he must spend on drugs think of all the things he could do with it but I always give it to him I'm a genius in kidding myself because I'm scared I stay at home to stay out of sight of other people I pay his bills he knows I will I mother him then I give him the silent treatment it seems that I'm the one who's out of control I tell my wife not to yell at him then I yell at him I throw him out of the house and then I get in the car and go looking for him I tell him to tell tone if he's going to be late and then if he does telephone first I argue with him and scold him for being late I refuse to put up with another physical assault just because he's drunk then I put up with another and another I beg her not to drive when she's High then I try to get her out of trouble when she gets caught driving while she's High I try to reason with him I cry over him I pray he'll quit drinking I I worry over her I call the police I swear ad him I pray the booze will kill him I hate her what you've just seen are some of the classic evasions these are the ineffective tactics that most parents use it first when the teenage alcohol or drug abuser is allowed to take over the life of the whole family revolves around the kid with a problem it wears everyone down one common way of getting some release from the tension is for parents to blame the schools or Society or their spouses it's a natural reaction won't do a bit of good though but it feels good for a short while there is something you can do about that stop passing the buck don't blame society or teachers or the bad kids or everyone else without blaming Society it is useful to remember that we do live in a fixed Society we're told constantly in subtle ways that if something is wrong with us there's something that we can take to get a quick fix well kids have a point you know when they say that they see their parents drink or take too many tranquilizers they see the double standards so a kid who's abusing alcohol is likely to say well why not my parents do call it the permissive Society or whatever there is a pervasive attitude that if it feels good you can do it just pay a little money and your problems will be solved designer jeans will give you a sexy figure alcohol will make you feel better if no one pays attention to you use something that's advertising it reflects our society the television generation has been given a message over over and over and it goes like this if you want to be the most important person in the world buy our [Music] product gee I wish Don would ask me out maybe if I used fix it all like she does cut cut come on kids you got to look beautiful feel beautiful all right come on every everybody sell the product it's going to get you dates make you sexy come on it's magic now do it let's do it again what a jerk how can anybody get excited about this I don't know them there are kids who can tell you the perfect formula for almost any mood you want what to combine with what to make something happen but that's a bad deal Clark because most kids don't understand what alcohol and drugs doe to the body or why they can sound very knowledgeable but it's all Street Talk from the outside today's generation can look pretty sophisticated though they believe some pretty foolish [Music] superstitions booze a problem oh no way man sure I have a beer on the weekend you know when nothing's going on but I'm always in [Music] control when I have to be it's only a problem when you really lose it let it run you I'm on top of it all the way look grass is healthy for you they're proving that all over the place it's just that the government doesn't want you to know it it even helps with cancer or something well at least it doesn't give you cancer not like cigarettes and some of the things you find in the super Market pot makes you feel good what's so bad about that I mean your body knows people just don't want to face the truth you know I mean this country is so backward other countries have been smoking grass for years for centuries and they don't have any problems it's not like alcohol you can drive better High than you can straight it helps you think things out if the government and all would just take a look at the facts then we wouldn't have all this trouble the dumb laws and everything hey anyone will tell you it helps you to party gets you and your old lady in the mood check it out I'll stop when I want to stop just like that I'll know when I've gone too far so nobody has to get on my case okay I don't have a problem all right these Street myths and others like them are accepted as the truth by millions of young people but parents shouldn't let themselves be misled by this kind of folklore there's one very positive thing you as a parent can do get the fact that's great Insight information because your kids and their friends may seem more sophisticated in some ways in your generation every generation has its own lies every one of those myths you saw is just that the facts are available for instance marijuana is carcinogenic smoking it does increase the risk of cancer alcohol is a factor in many health problems there's one bit of good news that proves the value of information when teenagers do give up marijuana for example it's been shown that they often do so because they've learned of the health dangers involved if your kid won't listen to you about the facts or a reason here's a suggestion that comes out of the work of many therapists look for help get a third party someone who might act as a goet a calming reasonable influence when you and your kid get into it the experts tell us that that gobet could be just about anybody that both sides respect might be a relative a teacher someone in the neighborhood the experts do say though that the mediator should be someone who is knowledgeable about alcohol or drug abuse one who doesn't minimize a danger but let's say that you followed all the ideas here you've tried everything is the conflict going to disappear overnight you know better than that but here's some inside information do something now if the situation at your house is bad it may be tough there can be severe stress and a lot of pain however you can try what is sometimes called tough love that is be so confident in the force of your love that you can if necessary be tough it's because I love you that I'm grounding you if you love me Mom You' leave me alone I just want to have a little fun nice try but I'm not buying it as long as you're in this house you're not going to risk your life I've got too much of mine invested in it I care too much to let you blow it all mom just this once there's no such thing as once not with your drinking you can't control it why can't you trust me trust you I'd love to I can't not until we lick this thing together do you hate me or something Mom I mean why all the hassling you're wrong young lady I love you the constant drinking is the hassle mom I can handle it I know I can no you can't and I've tried and tried but maybe together with outside help we can handle it I just don't know what to do next my son won't respond you know I I don't expect a miracle but I certainly expected something a lot easier than this you know I tell you without the support of parents with the same kind of problem problems I have I I just don't know what I'd do well my wife and I sure don't claim to know everything nobody seems to be able to tell us much either you know I don't mean to say that that uh other people haven't been helpful you learn about other families you you get some ideas you you get the feeling you're not alone but answers take a couple of steps forward and one step maybe two steps backward but I have decided one thing sure I'll try to understand why my son thinks he has to drink or take drugs I'll try to understand if it takes years but right here in now today I understand only one thing I want him to stop I want him to come back to life where there's that kind of love there's great hope it might be a long war and it could be a brutal one but it can be one here's an important tip for that struggle Sarah shortcuts won't do just cutting off the alcohol or drug Supply is no help if that's all you do your son or daughter can always find another supplier so even as you begin the war against the substance itself remember to look for the roots of the problem that brings us to our last bit of inside
