millimeter films and uh started off with some French uh because yesterday we showed a film uh about speaking English and um I just realized like those two things are not there oh they're back here oh all right so that goes there maybe all right I'll put the other one up uh anyways this is what we do is we show old 16 mm films and uh rehang artwork um anyways yeah so that was Lai local uh French uh and it's time to watch another cautionary tale from the our good friends at General Tire uh and this is a variation on what we showed yesterday so yesterday it was what was it called it was um was it you're taking a chance where is it I just don't seem prepared today do I uh why take a chance and today is the chance you take and this one's in color uh uh so yesterday we were cheated out of footage of a car being dropped uh driving off the top of a roof dropping 10 floors uh to the street maybe there will be a payoff here I hope so here's the chance you take enjoy [Music] every day this man risks his life a mistake an equipment failure and every day you too take Serious risks and without a second thought you or your wife your teenage son or daughter someone drives the family car and in your car at any time you may Bet Your Life every year more than 1 and A2 million families know the nightmare of an automobile accident 43,000 people are killed each year and 1 and A2 million are injured many crippled or disfigured for Life individuals couples entire families killed or injured year in year out today 122 will die another 4,200 will be seriously injured what causes this Carnage carelessness thoughtlessness speed the inability to stop blowouts loss of control skidding caused by inadequate unsafe tires on the short New Jersey turn bike, 1400 motorists a month are stopped by tire trouble in a recent survey Pennsylvania Turnpike troop has charged 68% of traffic deaths in a two-month period to worn or faulty tires to skids or loss of control yes on highspeed thoroughfares tires take a beating jamming on brakes at 70 generates enough heat to melt the pound of iron think about your tires all the braking energy of of a wheel is in the tire tread an area not much larger than a size 9 shoe and remember your brakes stop only the wheels your tires stop the car think about your tires at 50 m an hour a centrifugal force of approximately 2 tons tries to pull your tires apart no place for a tire that can't take it think about your tires in traffic night or day in town or on the open road you are seldom more than two arms lengths from disaster the best way to avoid this horror is to give more thought to your tired not like this as many people do but thoughtfully as you are doing now take time to get all the facts on safety with so much at stake the best is only good enough and the best is the incomparable General dual 90 the Most Wanted Safety Tire built let's see why the Dual 90 is so good it is not a tire like this there are unbelievably 10 Tires in this deck here are 10 dual 90s a difference You Bet Your Life nor is the Dual 90 a tire you can tie in a knot everything you value home family job security rides on your tires every time you drive anywhere you seldom take long trips you say or drive fast remember this 80% of all accidents happen within 10 miles of home the general dual 90 stops safely quick ly prevents accidents and saves lives gives you stopping traction on two Treads not just one punctures with a dual 90 you can forget them roadside repairs nighttime Flats forget them too famous Stratos seal let you keep right on driving punctures are sealed as you roll strength the Dual 9s famous and cord pound for pound stronger than steel cable takes it all how important is Extra Strength here's a conventional tire on a high-speed test wheel notice the extreme Distortion it can't take much more the evidence thrown Treads each representing Tire failure disintegration insufficient strength heat is a big tire killer when Tire temperates reach scorching hot nigun protects you mile after mile after mile then there is General TI Duren rubber Duren the ideal combination of longwearing toughness and Road gripping softness for maximum mileage and Cloud soft ride the Dual 90 has all the design advantages that 50 years experience building Quality Tires can provide a conventional single tread Tire carries its load on a narrow strip in the middle of the tread the Dual 90 with twin Treads divides and shares Tire load on two rolling radi this provides excellent stability on corners and curves and for even greater control the new wraparound shoulder design carrying a road gripping tread pattern well into the shoulder area this tread provides needed Traction in critical steering situations the Dual 90s wraparound design takes the fight out of steering you are in man under the roughest conditions when you think of your family yourself or the other fellow think of your tires think of the Dual 90 designed specifically to reduce accidents and save lives nobody wants to think about putting a price on his family's safety yet it is done day in Day Out your car is built for Extra Protection on impact when a car hits something at 60 MPH or when two cars Collide at 30 the impact is the same as a drop from a 10-story [Music] building live through it not likely today's high-speed traffic is no place to bet your life don't gamble think of your tires think of the difference think dual you owe it to your family you owe it to yourself [Applause] hooray thanks Jam handy for bringing the goods uh the 10 story uh Car drop that was uh pretty glorious now we didn't actually get to see like how high uh that crane was but it's fine we'll take it we'll take it um I think it's time to learn about some jump roping jump roping rope jumping o I'm going to get some lunch all right all right enjoy come on let's jump rope ready [Music] go everyone has fun jumping [Music] rope from the littlest girl to the largest boy [Music] star athletes enjoy jumping rope as part of their [Music] training all kinds of stunts can be done with a jump rope just take your pick to start at the beginning practice some rope jumping skills without a rope move your arm turning jump in place lightly then combine the movements now let's add a rope the Rope should be long enough to go from one shoulder under the feet and up to the other shoulder the ends of the Rope are knotted starting with the Loop behind the ankles single forward jump is the easiest to do then add another small jump for double jump this is single hop on one foot most everyone can do this with a little practice skipping in place is like regular skipping with a rope added you can also move as you skip rope the Rope is turned backward for backward jump you can do either single or double backward jumping rope twirl is fun jump jump twirl twirl jump jump twirl twirl cross arm skip is easy if you cross your arms far enough every other time you turn the Rope leaking skip is a simple folk dance step combined with rope jumping alternate hop with a leg swing is another rhythmic rope jumping skill it is possible to turn completely around in either direction while jumping rope now some fancy jumping with single ropes this is harder than it looks just try it sometime [Music] he I [Music] [Applause] a [Music] the [Music] so far we've seen a few plain and fancy things that can be done with a short rope what about using a long rope [Music] to begin with try jumping over a swaying rope then do a standin with the Rope turned overhead after the stand in you can try running in and jumping the long rope have you ever acted out this jump rope [Music] rhyme one two tie your shoe 2 3 4 shut the door 5 6 Pick Up Sticks 7 eight lay them straight can you do this very long without missing ask your rope Turners to wiggle and ripple the Rope near the ground and try it turning around while jumping rope takes good balance these are quarter turns now half turns and last a full turn running through a turning rope must be timed just right it can be done without a jump then with one jump and out then two jumps and out three jumps and so on running through may also be done as Follow the Leader with a group of boys and girls moving all the time this boy runs into the long rope while jumping a short rope can you do [Music] it this is Double Dutch with two long ropes turned at once now keep your eyes open for some long rope surprises this is like an elbow swing done in a long Rope two boys turn while the girls Circle Four Hands [Music] round part of the success of skillful rope jumping like this depends on the Turners they work while the others enjoy the fun of jumping and experimenting with different stunts [Music] [Music] do you see what I see a long rope and two short ropes in a long long rope outo the short ropes and the middle girls dance [Music] this would be fancy footwork even without a rope let's just sit back and enjoy it to the end [Music] oop I was eating a wrap wow that was uh great we may have shown that another version of that at some point point but that was the music in that was so good um so behind me I have a film scanner and um this is in conjunction with uh upcoming the end of the month is the big beginning of Summer right so let's learn to swim enjoy be taken up in order must get used to the water learn that it will support to move through it when a group is practicing for safety sake they pair off and the Buddies Keep Together helping and protecting each other as a first step in learning jump in the water and play around submerge to the chin rub water in your face dunk like a donut get the feel of the water the lower temperature the wetness to feel the pressure of the water and the buoyancy walk out until you are chest deep it'll be harder to breathe because of the pressure but you can overcome that and as you walk deeper you'll feel the lift of the water a tendency to float now in shallow water sit down and put your hands on the bottom let your legs and hips float off and the water supports you back in floating position and roll over steady yourself on your fingertips and start kicking feel how the kick pushes you forward each thrash of your legs moves you a few inches proper Brea in swimming is so important that you must begin practicing early the face is in the water a good part of the time for you must learn to get a breath quickly when the face is above water and to hold the breath or exhale when the face is submerged first we practice breath holding take a deep breath put your face in the water now hold while you count five repeat this several times now go straight down until the head is covered holding the breath now open your eyes doesn't hurt a bit next to learn how to breathe take a breath put the face under and exhale through the mouth roll the face up until you can breathe then under and exhale through the mouth keep it up until you're good at it 10 20 50 times without stopping this is rhythmic breathing one of the foundation stones of good swimming Master it now so that later when you have learned how to swim you won't have to think about it now for bobbing Practice still rhythmic breathing but more like the way it'll be when you're swimming out through the mouth up out through the mouth up while we're still in shallow water let's practice the kick Drive the legs up and down one at a time kicking from the hips loose flexible a good thrust on each down beat the next thing is to learn how to float there's no better place to learn than in shallow water with with the help of a partner learn to let the water support your weight so that when you start swimming your buoyancy will keep you on top your Strokes will be used to drive you forward most people float like this in a balanced position a few lucky individuals float like this with their toes out of the water some are so heavy in the legs that they float vertically and the few unfortunates who are too heavy to float support themselves for rest with a few gentle kicks now to learn how to float to prove to yourself that you're buoyant try this trick Benjamin Franklin wrote to his nephew take an egg or white Stone toss it into shallow water and try to get it you'll be surprised to find that it takes real effort to reach the bottom you may have to try several times if you want more definite proof try the jellyfish float Slide the hands down the legs and your feet will float off the bottom your whole weight is supported by the water from the jellyfish raise the arms and the legs until you are stretched out then pull your feet back under you and stand up let's try the back float when your body is supported by the water take your hands off the bottom and you are floating even though your he are touching in deeper water your partner supports you until you are in floating position then eases his hands away and leaves you afloat if you have difficulty getting back on your feet pull yourself up by your nose it works believe it or not you have learned that the water will support you and you're not afraid to put your face under now let's learn how to move through the water and we do it in the same simple manner from waist deep water take a full breath shove off face down let your feet come up and slide in toward Shore now do the same thing and add a kick to keep going try kicking practice on the back just for a change here you don't even have to hold the breath push against the water with your feet this is an excellent stroke to use when you get tired in learning to swim the arms are first used in a dog paddle stroke watch how the hand reaches out pulls down under the body and gets back to position notice also how one arm is always extended forward while the other is pulling now take a Glide and just use the arm let the feet Trail while you concentrate entirely on learning the arm stroke facing Shore in shallow water we now try in combination the arm and leg Strokes we've been practicing separately to balance the stroke try to time it so the right leg kicks as the left arm pulls and the left leg kicks as the right arm pulls try this again and again so that before you leave shallow water with this stroke you can swim twice the distance along Shore that you will swim away from Shore when The Beginner's stroke is mastered one simple change will convert it into a beginner's crawl you simply bring the arms back above water and setad of underneath like this now you're a float and navigating under your own power but you're not ready for deep water until until you have practiced all these fundamentals and have learned a few more simple things for safety for example Finning a simple little hand stroke that pushes you along in the back floating position but this is only half a stroke if you use the double push in a figure eight you are skulling one of the most useful Strokes in swimming while you're still in shallow water practice the turn simply stick an arm out and pull yourself around you've got to learn this before you get in deep water so you can get back to turn on your back and rest just stick one arm out and roll over kick your way along or float see how simple it is to turn back again step over your own leg watch it again if you should accidentally step in a hole or find yourself in water too deep and you can't touch there's nothing to get excited about just climb back to the surface keep on swimming it's your first test jump into deep water level off and swim out this test should be be taken only under expert supervision turn around turn over and swim on your back turn again and swim ashore what you do from now on is up to you whether you are interested in swimming Just For Fun For Speed or for distance you must practice if you want to dive that takes practice too if you work hard enough at it you may even be able to dive like this The Beginner's stroke is just a start to swim like this you must learn better strokes and practice them constantly you may not want to be a champion like this girl but you should try to master one or two strokes that will help you enjoy the water to the utmost all swimming is based on only three kinds of arm strokes and three kinds of leg strokes and here they are first the flutter kick legs thrashing from the hips in a loose flexible up and down motion The Body Rolls slightly from side to side the scissors a slower stroke but with lots of power in its SL FLH in drive the knees are drawn up then the legs are spread and driven back against the water with full power applied you can't see it all from this angle but from the rear you can see how WID is driving this stroke has two names breast stroke kick or frog kick here again as in the scissors the legs are drawn spread and pressed backward against the water now for the arm Strokes hand over hand first used in the crawl and the trudon notice how the arms follow each other entering the water cleanly pulling down under the body and lifting out to get back to position the side stroke the forward arm pulls then passes the stroke along to the rear arm and returns to gliding positions the rear arm pulls then slides back just under the surface the breast stroke is an old favorite the wide sweep of the arms gives plenty of driving force notice that the arms start to bend for Recovery when the pull reaches shoulder level a good way to practice leg Strokes is on the kickboard a 3-ft length of plank the board supports the arms and upper body concentrate on refining and strengthening these Strokes are the foundation of good swimming and must be practiced over and over again until they are strong remember that all styles of swimming are combinations of these basic Strokes the combination first the elementary backstroke just a Step Beyond the beginners is no problems this is the easiest stroke to learn as it is only a back float with paired arm and leg Strokes added if the arms are stretched Beyond The Head and the stroke of arms and legs alternated you are swimming an inverted breast stroke turn over on the front shorten the arm stroke a bit and you're swimming the breast stroke the breast stroke begins and ends with ar notice how slowly the swimmer Strokes in this stroke buoyancy is good and practically all effort moving through the water watch this Olympic champion holder of many world's records in the breast stroke every movement designed to push her even to the toes pull whoa yeah so it's was missing the title and it was missing the ending alas um and uh that was in a lake I don't think that was in the ocean so not Jaws but piran that's what I'm thinking I'm seeing that I'm thinking piranha okay uh what do we got um the bridge let's talk about the bridge taking it to the bridge of um all the Ford Motor Company so what do you think this is about the bridge enjoy South America with Europe was nearly a billion dollars a year the trade with the United States was somewhat Less on the uguay and Paraguay produced broken ends coiled backups burned by their own Crews Italian ships they are EX experts at D the weight of susers began to pile up cotton of Peru cotton of Brazil cotton once used on the Looms of Europe bail after bail each baale a field of cotton cotton which South America needs and needs badly but cannot use does not have the machines to use to weave one1 of its own cotton the new warehouses filled to the roof with Sachs of coffee here are the years of war 1939 40 41 42 43 a billion cups of coffee product of Agriculture that grows nothing but a single crop and the immense Pampers of Argentina with a climate like our own Midwest grow beef we corn but today only the beef is taken lost the wheat ripens too long in the fields Z into the Silence of the granaries 200 million bushel of surplus a year countries which depend for their life on one or two or three crops feed these crops At Last Only to the r the field the corn is stored Outdoors there's no more room in the warehouse will this food ever be eaten y Saab no one knows it is corn that the United States doesn't need that Europe cannot [Music] get corn has dropped to 1 cent a bushel corn is cheap corn can be bought by the wagon load left on the cob till it grows dry and hard in the Sun the corn of Argentina is being used as fuel for the furnaces of the factories this food but cannot get it she lackes trains roads trucks to move it and in Europe there is war the blacksmith Burns corn on his Forge the surpluses of South America are burning but but other fires burn in South America night and day the fires of Industry the United States is at War the United States needs masses of raw materials to forge into weapons Asia and Africa are far away the United States looks to South [Applause] America under the soil by pools of highgrade oil new wells go down night and day Wells to supply new oil to American [Music] fighters the new well begins to pump at first there's nothing only the yellow mud that smells of kerosene but in half an hour there's oil Rich oil prospected and drilled and pumped out of the Virgin Jungle of Eastern [Music] Venezuela and in the Chilean desert [Music] life once more they are blasting nitrate out of the desert nitrate and iodite Ides bismo and antimony The Ore is blasted and scraped and dumped out of South America from mines 3 Mi High brillium vadium tungsten flat cars loaded with tin down from the plateau of Bolivia to the Sea ports of the United States and in the cordier of Chile Where the hills are solid copper or in the largest open mine in the world there's a warning [Music] then silence day and night the copper is blasted out copper is needed for shells and bullets for gun parts and radios the war boom is on the metals needed by the United Nations copper and lead and manganes reach new levels of intense production sheets bars ingots aluminum ore sheets of mica industrial diamonds and rare metals and Roar Goods of every kind pouring out of South America moving by plane steamer and truck toward the factories of War [Music] it is still morning over South America but there is no war boom here there is only one road into this town there is only a market nine out of 10 in South America live near towns like this nine out of 10 have never seen a mine or an oil field they live by the Earth and by the labor of their hands their lives have always been hard nothing changes here but the faces on the coins [Music] the people of South America are as fine and capable as any in the world but their beauty is weakened by disease and their children too many of them will die before they can read [Music] in this market the meat is transported and sold in the open without Refrigeration there is no ice and no means of making ice in this market the cheapest food is still the food of the Indians potatoes Yuka and other starchy roots and being poor this is what most South Americans eat potatoes dry corn kernels of starch to be ground into bread that's what is sold that's what is bought in every South American town this morning the morning passes corn is ground on a stone mortar the midday meal is being prepared mother needs water there is no source of water in the house her oldest daughter takes the can goes half a mile to the Town [Music] Pump the utensil which the daughter carries has great advantages it's quite unbreakable and it leaks only a little it is the product of an American Oil company but this family has no use for the oil [Music] the meal is ready it is potatoes squash yuker there's plenty of hot starch but the vitamin content is not very great no green vegetables neither cooked nor raw no whole grains and no [Music] milk the baby gets sugar and water [Music] in the father's play be a portion of black [Music] meat so the meal ends and the afternoon begins and work begins again they're making pack saddles for mules for only mules connect this town with the world around it 300 years ago a woman like this was making Saddles exactly like this without tools out of straw woven with bare hands the people of South America and the great majority live not by wheel and gear and kilowatt but by hand and foot and back using bone tools taking weaks and weeks to weave a single garment the productivity of such labor is very low only in the last generation has weaving by hand given way a little to weaving by machine machines that can make a 100 yards while the we makes one machines that can make clothes out of the Surplus cotton of South America bright new factories making cloth textiles paper even cement and glass new thousands of industrial workers but they are only thousands the millions of South America still work in the old way work on the land scratching the Earth with slow oxen and a wooden [Music] plow under the Hooves of Horses The Grain is threshed the chaff is thrown to the wind with a wooden Fork this is the agriculture of a thousand years ago the fields of wheat lie beautiful in the afternoon light but beyond them is erosion increasing like a disease SE in this country a farmer will say yes there was good land in this Valley but it was plowed too often now there is always too much water or too little water and sometimes no seed will take root the Sun is bright the air is good but the rate of illness is high the Chief disease malnutrition everywhere in the world somehow the face of poverty is the same how will this girl grow up into what kind of South America perhaps the answer is here in the continent [Music] itself for while the great centers of population are in Argentina in coastal Brazil in central Chile and in the high plateaus of the Andes there are vast agricultural areas still [Music] unused Venezuela has many thousands of square miles Colombia Ecuador Bolivia Peru and Brazil has the region of the Amazon in these unused lands lies the agricultural future of South America but they are not easy to use they are warm flat Rich they have abundant water too much water they are covered with stubborn jungle and they are sparsely populated in some areas as little as one family per square mile and here once more there are few tools of any kind [Music] around them is the Silence of the Jungle a land without winter breeding place of plant animal and human diseases hot and moist crawling with life and with the enemies of life with insects that can devour a crop from from Roots to leaves how can this land be [Music] conquered can this house become a [Music] city are there tools to do the job the tools are still on the ground unknown unused the wealth of South America still lies enclosed in stone in Peru in Chile Venezuela Brazil a billion tons of iron oil and all the metals of the world and enough water power to Electrify the continent with these resources South America can open the doors of the 20th century the steel is ready the steel that will go not to Pittsburgh Lancaster or Yokohama but steel to be forged into more machines for South America steel to be delivered into the arms of the future from the United States and from these South American shops will come the machines that will convert the unknown and undeveloped areas into human use convert cotton into clothing rubber into t ties steel and the machines to make machines for half of South America is still a wild frontier not enough roads not enough men not enough tools the work has just begun the work of road builders the work of Health Engineers the work of soil experts the work of planting in the new fields of the Amazon Valley [Music] the the seeds are those of rubber the young tree has the kind of root that will resist disease but it yields little rubber so the bud of another variety of tree whose root is weak but whose trunk gives a high yield of rubber latex is grafted onto the healthy root 7 years of Care by Indian workmen of the Ford plantation and out of the Amazonian Forest comes the full yield of liquid rubber science can make the jungle straight make it yield not one crop but many oranges as well as Industrial Rubber pineapples as well as rice and cacao and all the known vegetables of the [Music] world when the richness of South American soil Bears the full Harvest not of one or two crops for export only but all the variety of human food when the Farms of South America are planned to feed men not ships then the children of this continent will have something to inherit but none of the these things are complete they have just been started and no measures of industrialization or of improvement for agriculture no measures to raise the living standards of the South American people are possible without transportation there are some Railways mostly in Argentina but the mileage is small and sometimes key links are broken for months at a time the network of Highways is small and roads are often washed away in the rainy season there are steamer routes but mostly to other continents the vastness of the continent is still [Music] impenetrable the Great Rivers of the Amazon system sometimes as wide as 200 miles are still used mostly by small craft by native canoes or not used at all the jungle Still Remains untamed and unused the Western desert dry and dangerous is a storehouse of metals and chemicals one Railroad and one Highway across the length of its 2,000 [Music] [Applause] miles roads have been cut and twisted across the cold passes of the mountains but the roads are few the Andes still hold like a wall the second highest in the [Music] world to build any road here is a trick of engineering [Music] acrobatics it is not easy to drive along these Cliffs to follow the chasm of these Twisted Rivers the vehicle must be short the motor powerful the load not too great to travel 10 Mi an air distance there may be 100 Mil of Curves and grades it is not easy to base an economy on roads like these because you cannot go fast you cannot go far the corn of Argentina Burns and the coffee of Brazil rots while each Valley tries to live alone the things people need are still carried on the backs of [Music] mules The Long Afternoon of South America is measured out by the Hooves of mules by the feet of men too poor to buy shoes the freight of South America still goes on the backs of a man a woman a a child while this woman climbs five centuries pass and above her head there stands a bridge the bridge of air itself the bridge that Springs toward the Future No area in the world is self-sufficient and the greatest amount of trade has always been between the most industrialized countries Air transport will bring any place in the world within 60 Air hours of South [Music] America let us watch the [Music] future what will go up with this enormous plane is it farm tools fertilizer tested [Music] seeds it will carry as much in one year as 100 trucks 10,000 [Music] mules is it books charts microscopes for a new college or whole tractors moving up to replace the last of the wooden plows the plane is ready with its 20 tons of cargo it takes off from Santiago Lima keto from cities not yet built workmen of Ecuador multiply This Plane a thousand [Music] times multiply it minor of Bolivia it skips the jungle uses the shortcuts of the air the Indian of Brazil will be the neighbor of a woman and child in cold Peru above their heads a motor flies in the softness of the air it can bring you what you need South American it can lift it over the deadly snow of the volcanoes here there are no obstacles of mountain swamp or desert here there are no boundaries between country and Country the air itself can carry the traffic of all the continents the air is the bridge into the [Music] future I was like wait a minute where's Ford Motor Company like where's that and it turns out I I uh I was thinking of the film invisible Bridge not the bridge an invisible bridge is similar film but uh trucks and Ford tractors um make things better uh for people in the third world that's what that film is about so this one is definitely about trying to use industry and agriculture to boost what is available to civilize these backwards third third part uh third world country people um and of course we know how that went uh uh so thanks for tuning in today very much appreciate it you'll see that I have my stuff back up um and uh if you happen to be in uh Raleigh uh tonight I'm doing a show and uh as of this morning I was it was sold out but let me see what happens is if you really want to go see it it's U when puppets go bad um oh no already some people have canceled so there are some seats available uh and there's special prizes for people who sit up front in the front row um just saying that uh but yeah uh that's at 6:30 tonight at the Alamo Draft House uh would love to see you in person if I've never seen you before or I haven't seen you in a while um but otherwise come back tomorrow uh we'll be showing more films and as and today was great I loved the films today um we got to see a car go Smash and we got to see some crazy jump rope into some great organ music all that stuff awesome anyways we shall see you tomorrow if I don't see you tonight everybody take care have a great rest of your Tuesday bye e
