hi everybody this is Skip bellheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and uh today I'm not at the archive but we still have some stuff for you to watch and uh today is going to be television themed and I have two films that have almost the same title but are different in how they were made and who made them the first one is television how it works and then the second one is how television Works uh the first one was made by cornet films the second one by a British company and it was distributed in the US um so it's kind of interesting to see a little bit of a take uh different take on the same Concepts then um as always we try to reward you with some television commercials and these are ones that that um have been digitized by pringer archives recently these are brand new um and there's some really great ones from the 70s there lots of jingles and exciting products and I you guys love that stuff so I figured I'd reward you we hope communication for its influence on thinking and action is tremendous suppose we were privileged to enter the inner sanctum of a television station here in the control room sit The Men Who at the touch of a button control the picture going to our homes where we at the touch of a button select from a variety of programs news stories entertainment education Sports and advertising for in a few short years television has become one of the greatest merchandising media how is all this done what causes this almost instantaneous transmission of Sight and Sound it is an electron beam which Paints the picture on your receiver tube you can see the mark of this beam when you turn your receiver off let's look at one of these receiver tubes and find out how television works this is known as a cathode ray tube because under high voltage electricity the cathode gives off a beam or Ray of electrons you might call this an electron gun which shoots a stream of tiny negative particles at the face of the tube the fluorescent coating on the face glows where the Electron Beam strikes it now let's look into a TV Camera through one of its lenses an image is formed not on film but on another tube a tube which costs more than $1,000 this type is called the image orthicon tube in it is another electron gun which sends out a steady stream of electrons now this target is made so as to pick up a series of electrical charges when the lens forms an image on the sensitive plate and these charges vary the magnitude of the returning Electron Beam to understand this let's imagine that we want to televise a single dot not a white dot not a black dot but something in between in the camera tube the lens forms an image of the dot on the plate setting up a charge on the target according to the brightness of the image the Electron Beam is changed when it returns from the target this changed beam is Amplified and sent out by the tube in the television transmitter this picture signal is Amplified and combined with a very high frequency carrier wave the carrier wave with the fluctuation caused by the image of the gray dot goes to the transmitter antenna and is radiated from the top of the tower the receiver antenna picks up the wave and sends it down the leadin wires to the receiver here the the signal controls the Electron Beam so that it strikes the fluorescent face just hard enough to make a gray dot on the receiver screen thus the basis of Television is an image of Light which controls electricity which regulates transmitter waves which again control electricity and finally is turned back into light but television is more than a gray dot it's a whole picture and it moves to understand how television makes pictures that move think of this when you read a book you don't read the whole page at once you read a little bit at a time swinging your eye across line after line in the TV Camera tube the beam of electrons can do much the same electrons are affected by magnetic fields of deflecting coils these coils make the Electron Beam sweep back and forth across the target these coils make the beam swing up and down together they swing the beam across one line then back across another lower down and still another lower thus in effect the beam looks at each point of the picture and it varies according to the brightness of each point the movement of the beam in the camera is accurately timed in the TV transmitter by a sync generator which generates synchronizing pulses these pulses are also sent out over the air as part of the video signal in your receiver these pulses synchronize The Sweep of the Electron Beam to the station being received and as the beam sweeps back and forth line after line the strength of the beam keeps changing modulated by the video signal where the beam is strong the tube glows brightly where it's weak the tube remains dark thus the camera and the receivers watching it are electronically linked together and the signal from each point in the camera tube is transmitted and turned into a picture of the same point on the receiver tube so on your receiver tube pictures are painted by an in visible beam darting back and forth at speeds thousands of miles per hour in the most common forms of Television the beam scans every other line then goes back to fill in this is called interlace scanning with 60 interlaced pictures per second or 30 full pictures per second it assures a steady image with no Flicker and because your ey ey has a Persistence of vision this series of pictures gives the illusion of motion add sound through FM radio and you have [Music] television in today's Airwaves television occupies the very high and ultra high frequencies these waves cannot normally be received Beyond the Horizon so the area of TV reception is limited television transmitters are linked sometimes by coaxial cable a special wire and Tube arrangement to carry TV signals and sometimes by relay stations located usually on High Ground they receive a signal through one of the horn-shaped antennas boost it stronger and transmit it on to the next station thus television is sent from coast to coast images picked up by cameras and turned into radio wave signals which tell a fleeting invisible beam how to paint moving pictures in your home wouldn't you like to know more about television the cameras the lights the production techniques for those who understand television there are many vocational opportunities let this be only the beginning of your study of television [Music] this sort becomes ever more common each one is a television aerial of which there are several kinds not all of which are in the open from each aerial a wire leads inside the house to a television [Music] receiver what these viewers see going on in their television set is really happening at almost the very same moment but in a different [Music] place we are now in the television Studio the picture will usually be taken by more than one camera so that by switching over the viewer is given an instant change of view [Music] the sound is picked up by a microphone and broadcast exactly as in ordinary Sound Radio the picture however is separately dealt with it is viewed by one of the television cameras the camera has lenses like any other camera but there the likeness ends the lens in the case of this camera does not put the picture onto a film but onto the end of a special vacuum tube here is the tube this is the window end on which the lens throws a moving picture but for the rest there are only electrical connections it is inside the tube then that the picture is changed into electrical impulses for this two parts are mainly used the first is behind the window and is called the Mosaic although it appears transparent this side is actually covered with Tiny separate squares of metal here they are very much enlarged the second part called the electron gun can be made to project a continuous stream of tiny electrical particles called electrons at the Mosaic through the tiny hole in the middle this tubular device is used to change the direction of the stream of electrons on the Mosaic is the picture of the piano keys the metal squares have been made very much larger to change the picture into electrical impulses here is the stream of electrons it is really quite invisible this is the tubular device it can deflect the stream of electrons up and down and from side to side it is used to move the stream across the picture space a line at a time until all the space has been sprayed when it sets the stream back to the start the stream keep spraying the Mosaic like this over and over again so that we can see what happens the stream in the drawing crosses very slowly and it only has to cross 16 times to cover the Mosaic in the real thing the stream makes several hundred Crossings to cover the Mosaic and covers it 50 times each second let's stop the movement of the stream now here is a wire when the stream hits a bright metal square a strong impulse of electricity goes along the wire when the stream hits each gray Square each impulse is weaker and when it hits each dark Square each impulse is very weak indeed so now the picture a pattern of different intensities of Light which we could see has changed the strength of a flow of electricity into a pattern of different impulses which cannot normally be seen but can be carried along the wire from the tube the wires carrying the impulses of electricity which now represent the picture go to this apparatus called an amplifier because it strengthens the impulses from the camera in the the studio cables carry the strengthened impulses to a control room here the impulses are further Amplified and undergo complicated technical processes before passing to the actual transmitter where they modulate the radio signal that is to broadcast them to broadcast means to send out in all directions which is done from the top of this very tall Mast by this very small aial almost at once the receiving aerial is passing the same impulses which by now are very much weaker to the television set they go first to this amplifier apparatus because they are so weak and now very much stronger the impulses are fed to this tube this end receives the impulses from the amplifier this end is where the picture appears the tube is very like the tube in the camera in having two main parts the gun that projects a stream of electrons and and the other part instead of being a mosaic is the end of the tube itself on its inside surface is a coating of material forming a fluorescent screen there is also this part which deflects the electrons just as there was for the camera tube here are the wires one of which brings the successive imp houses of electricity here is the fluorescent screen here is the deflecting device from the gun a stream of electrons is projected the deflecting device bends the stream to spray like the stream in the camera tube but the stream is bent more this time to cover a larger screen area as the electrons are spread on it the fluorescent screen glows so that where the stream hits can be seen but all the time the electrical impulses are coming in some very strong from the bright part of the picture some of medium strength from the gray part of the picture and some very weak from the dark part of the picture these different impulses are made to alter the stream strong impulses strengthen the stream and weak impulses weaken it almost to nothing a very weak stream doesn't make the fluorescent screen shine at all leaving black on the screen a medium strength stream makes the screen shine more or less to make the gray parts of the picture and a strong stream makes the screen shine brightly giving the patches of white the screen doesn't shine for very long though the bright Parts soon fade but you will remember that the stream travels much faster than this it makes hundreds of lines 50 times a second so that almost before a bright part has time to fade the stream is back again to brighten it 50 images are painted each second so the illusion of a smoothly moving picture is readily accepted because the eyes of the viewer are quite unable to distinguish the separate images let's run over it again here is the piano to be televised its picture is taken by a special camera the camera turns the black white and gray of the picture into electrical impulses which pass from the camera to the broadcasting station where the impulses are strengthened and sent out by the aial practically at once the impulses reach the Aerials on folks homes and go to the receiver here the electrical impulses are turned back into the black white and gray of the picture 50 images are painted each second this is much too fast for our eyes to separate and so we see apparently a continuous moving picture at almost the same time as it actually [Music] happens e [Music] if you were the Olympia Brewing Company and
