hi everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm films and comment on them uh I am not at the archive today I'm pre-recording this show because I'm right now in a dental chair I'm getting a teeth cleaning tooth cleaning mouth cleaning um and uh so I figured if we're going to do that why don't we show some films that are dental related so we're going to start off with encyclopedia britannica's savior teeth uh then we're going to do kind of a parallel uh covers the same information but this is made in the Soviet Union and is in Russian uh unfortunately there's no subtitles so you're on your own but the thing is I think if you've watched enough of these films you'll get what's going on and what's interesting is how things are a little bit different like how much the schools contribute to dental health uh in the Soviet Union and then uh of course we can't have dental health information without having marionette involved somehow and this is a film I've shown before but it's so good it's uh Danny's Dental date then we're going to watch a series of public service announcements made by the American Dental Health Association about myths and about uh the importance of dental health care thanks for tuning in and we will be see you tomorrow if you like what you saw uh give us a thumbs up a like you can subscribe you can go to ko-fi.com avgeeks and buy us some coffee um which is probably the primary stainer of my teeth right now uh patreon.com avgeeks and uh also via the super thanks button those are all great ways to support us but just watching and commenting that's another way you can help us so we will see you tomorrow Tuesday everybody take care [Music] bye to that out of my mouth ala does you can rinse your mouth out now it wasn't bad was it no it h a little bit but not near as much as I thought it would that's fine by the way Dan these x-rays we took the last time you were here showed two teeth that have signs of Decay they don't need filling yet but we'll have to check up on them soon here you can see the spots they mean that decay is just started sometimes very early decay can be stopped for a long time then they don't have to be filled of course you have to take proper care of your teeth to stop Decay and prevent future Decay but what do I have to do first you have to brush your teeth properly do you brush them every day oh sure twice a day well that's fine but the important thing to remember is when do you brush them well the first thing in the morning when I get up and just before I go to bed you ought to brush them as soon as possible after eating especially in the morning and in the evening if you aren't where you can brush them at noon you should at least rinse your mouth with water right after you eat I'm sure I can do that back to orfield I wonder how you brush your teeth there are some ways of brushing teeth that don't do much good let's show them the right way I've used this hundreds of times to show fellas like you and grown-ups too first you clean the cheek side of the upper teeth and the gums too brushing away from the gums that helps remove the food particles next you brush the tongue side of the upper teeth next brush the lower ones finish up with a chewing surfaces it's easy just takes practice to get the knck of it sure I can do that any day would you like to look at them Dan yeah you know Dan to help you remember what I've told you I'd like to see you practice on your own teeth in fact that I'm going to give you a present here's a brush you can keep gee that's a Dandy thanks a lot those bristles are just right for you is this right yes that's good now work around to the other side and be sure to give your gums a good brushing too shouldn't I use toothpaste can I brush my teeth well correct brushing is more important than the dtif of course Dan brushing alone won't stop Decay you need well balanced meals they are just as important to a healthy mouth as they are to a strong body oh yes we learned that in our science class you need meat milk eggs vegetables and minerals too well that's true but I wonder if you know there's one thing that will cause your teeth to Decay you in spite of good food and proper brushing there is what's that it's sugar refined sugar sugar may cause tooth decay sugar yes sugar from foods you eat and some of the things you drink you do drink pop and eat candy don't you oh sure I eat that well there's a lot of sugar and soft drinks and of course there sugar and candy and gum and many foods in your mouth that Sugar changes to a kind of acid and that may cause your teeth to Decay I didn't know it pop and gum and Candy could hurt my teeth well most people don't know it but sweets can harm the teeth of almost anyone that's because most sweets have refined sugar in them is that the kind we have at home that's right it's the kind you put on cereals to sweeten them then I'm going to tell you some things I think your mother ought to hear Miss Taylor will you ask Mrs Adams to step in here for a minute please thanks doctor you see Dan there are lots of things with refined sugar in them and as I told you this sugar changes to acid in the mouth I don't see how it can do that oh Mrs Adams Dan and I were just talking about how refined sugar harms the teeth I thought maybe you'd like to hear about it too well I've heard a little Dr orfield but I'd like to know more I was telling Dan that Sugar changes to acid in the mouth and this acid causes tooth decay some of the bacteria in the mouth changes the sugar bacteria in the mouth how do they get in the mouth well they're there all the time Dan but it's when we eat sugar that they make acid you've probably never seen any bacteria under a microscope before have you no I haven't well let's take take a look at some shall we okay but first we'll have to get some bacteria out of your mouth Miss Taylor may I have a slide please now we'll have to scrape just a little you'll hardly feel this Miss Taylor will you stain this please staining the bacteria takes a few minutes while we're waiting do you have any questions you'd like to ask about the care of teeth yes I have doctor there's a question I've been meaning to ask you I've heard a great deal about a chemical that can be used on the teeth to help prevent decay is that a good thing to use it certainly is we use a fluoride solution and we have evidence that for some people this fluide treatment helps prevent Decay as a matter of fact I was going to suggest to you that at Dan's next visit we start giving his teeth this chemical treatment chemical you're going to put some chemical in my mouth won't that hurt no not a bit there a matter of fact it doesn't even taste bad here let me show you how it's done first I'd have to clean your teeth and then I'd take a little of this solution these cotton pads keep your mouth free from saliva we paint the surfaces of the teeth very carefully all over and we let it dry for about 3 minutes and that's all there's to it of course this solution won't stop Decay but it will help prevent it from getting started he's the slide doctor oh the slide's ready thank you let's step over this way and take take a look at this through the microscope all right then thank you there you are Dan those are bacteria from your own teeth wow would you like to have a look Mrs Adams yes I would say that was something I've never seen bacteria through a microscope before and there a lot of them in my mouth yes there are millions of them in everyone's mouth but they only make acid when there's sugar in the mouth they can change to acid what can I do about them well I don't suppose you'll stop eating sugar all together but is the next best thing I would suggest that you stop eating sweets between meals don't forget that toothbrush I gave you Dan you know everyone should have at least two brushes so we can always use a dry one thanks a lot you're welcome you know I've been thinking if I'm going to have to give up soft drinks and candy and cookies and cake between meals I'm going to get awful hungry oh you're wrong about that Dan there are a lot of treats that you can eat without Hur in your teeth like popcorn nuts meat sandwiches and cheese oh I'll admit taking care of your teeth is a big job but it's worth it do you think you can handle it well looks like I'd better try my best I'm sure you will Dan we'll check your teeth again in about 6 months now be sure you avoid sweets between meals and do a good job of brushing your teeth after meals well I'll try my best Dr orfield well that's fine then goodbye goodbye goodbye [Music] it Str [Music] foreign foreign spee what fore foree speeech spee maybe you wouldn't have to go to the dentist if you could chew sticks and Bones like I can well what's so different about your teeth well I eat a lot of tough food so I have big strong crushing teeth look at the marks on this stick a crushing teeth work something like a nutcracker you know you have crushing teeth too Danny yeah I didn't know that which ones are they oh they're back in your mouth a little way you have eight all together two up above and two Below on each side of your mouth they're called bicuspids because they have two points well if I have bicuspids I guess I could eat bones too if I wanted to well maybe not bones but you should eat all kinds of food to exercise your different teeth you have other kinds of teeth Danny besides by cuspids that's right cat take me for instance hey who said that [Music] hi there C and Dy oh hello bushy what about your teeth why do you see the SW front teeth I've got they're called iners because I eat lots of roots and nuts my iners have to be sharp and thin edged see what I mean you have incer teeth too Danny maybe they're not as big as mine but they're right in the front of your mouth gosh I guess I do have enzers I've got eight of them four up above and four below yes sir iners are great teeth and nobody has a many figger than I have yep I guess you're right bushy thanks for hey where'd he go oh bushy is a busy little squirrel and he has lots to do well come on Danny let's look for some other kinds of teeth okay cap you you go on ahead I'm coming [Music] [Music] hello there Tom this is my young Master Danny hi Tom how are you hello Danny hi cat Danny is looking for different types of teeth what types do you have wow I've got all kinds but my canine teeth they're wonderful they're for holding and tearing my food and they're called cuspids because they're pointed something like these [Music] Pals you have cuspids too Danny but they're not as sharp and long as mine they're on each side of your cers one cusped up above and one down below on each side of your mouth gee you sure know a lot about teeth Tom well you will too Danny well thanks Tom we'll be seeing you yeah come around sometime for some fish Tom [Music] bye hello there Daisy how's the alala hello cap oh the alala is fine just fine this is Danny my young Master will you tell him something about your teeth why sure K I'd be glad to you see Danny I have very large and strong grinding teeth because I chew my hay and grass all day long and of course I chew my cud too grinding teeth work just like like this get the idea you've got grinding teeth too Danny they're called molers and they're way back in your mouth there're two MERS up above and two Down Below on each side of your mouth you should eat tough foods like I do daddy so your molders will get a whole lot of exercise well I guess i' better be going it's just about milking time and I want to be in the barn when farmer Jones comes to do the milking gee I never knew you animals had all those different kinds of teeth buy cusbs and incizors and cusbs and mullers I guess I wouldn't have to see the dentist if I ate bones and nuts and tough meat and hay but gee who wants to eat all those things you don't have to Danny you can eat the things you like your teeth also need nourishment foods that have all the different vitamins cap is right again Danny now I furnish you with two important foods the first one is milk you should have four glasses or a whole quart of milk each [Music] day the next food I Supply you with is butter you should eat at least six teaspoonfuls of butter or margarine every day each one of these little squares you see mother cutting off the cube is about a [Music] teaspoonful don't forget me I fish another important food Danny egg you should eat at least one egg each day or far or f a week anyway yes sir Danny milk butter and eggs then you should eat one large serving of meat and cheese or fish every day also you should eat some of all these vegetables and fruits here they come [Music] potatoes cauliflower [Music] beats well let's see how many of them you can name Danny [Music] no [Music] he [Music] well say here's Danny in bed the real life Danny he must have been having a [Music] dream but I guess that appointment with the dentist was real because Danny is hurrying to get there on time at 10:00 [Music] don't worry cap Danny will be through in just a few minutes you just wait right [Music] there well here's the dentist office and Danny is right on [Music] time the dentist assistant puts Danny in this special chair and puts a clean towel around him so he won't get his shirt dirty then she adjusts the headrest so he can lean back comfortably without getting too tired and here comes the dentist he's just washed his hands so they'll be nice and clean hello there Denny how are you well Denny we're going to look in your mouth to see if you have any holes or cavities in your teeth now open wide so I can see real good and this instrument I'm going to use is a feeler we dentists call them explorers it's just a sharp point that lets me feel the teeth if there are any holes in them they Point sticks that way I know there is a cavity beginning to form in the tooth the hole that should be filled here Danny you take hold of this mirror and I'll show you a little cavity you see there it's black and this feeler sticks in it that's one we'd better fill well now in order to fill it we have to grind out all the bad part of the tooth all that black and decayed part and we have little instruments that are called drills but they're really Grinders and they grind out all of the bad part here I'll show you how they work oh I'm going to carve my initial on my my fingernail see now let's try it on your fingernail we're going to do the same thing to your tooth that we did to your fingernail this will grind out the decayed part you'll feel it sometimes it jars and grinds and sometimes it hurts a little bit but not too bad now we'll squirt some water in your mouth to wash out all the bad part of the tooth we ground out you just lean over and spit say you have a pretty good spitter Danny now we'll dry out the hole in the tooth with little balls of cotton we want to be sure it's nice and clean then we'll sterilize it with medicine that we put on these little pieces of cotton sometimes it tastes funny but don't let that worry you next we take some small rolls of cotton and put them in your mouth they fit under the tongue on one side and next to the cheek on the other they keep the saliva from getting the tooth wet here Danny you hold the cotton with with your finger now while I'm drying out the cavity the nurse is putting some filling material in a little glass jar there's Mercury and silver and they mix together to form an amalgam that we will use to fill your to this filling material is put inside this instrument and and uh all I have to do is to poke the end and some of the amalgam goes into the hole in your tooth now I have to pack the material in I have to push hard so the filling will fit real tight and won't come out it will seal the cavity and make a whole tooth again sometimes we have to add filling material several times before the tooth is completely filled and it all has to be pressed in real good so you hold your head tight Danny so that I can press down hard there now we're almost through with these little carving instruments I'll shave away the extra filling material and make your tooth nice and smooth and comfortable be sure though not to chew on it for a couple of hours otherwise we you might break it and we would have to do it all over again which we don't want to do do we now we'll wash out your mouth and give you a chance to spit out some of the excess filling material there now you're all through come back in a few days and we'll polish The Filling say Danny do you know how to brush your teeth if you brush them real good you won't have so many cavities first thing you need is a toothbrush with bristles that are straight across about two rows wide and six rows long and a good husky handle that you can really get hold of now when you brush your teeth always brush toward the chewing surface down on the uppers and up on the lowers in brushing your teeth start up on the gums then brush down over the tooth surface with a rotary motion do it several times in one place and then pull the brush forward and make sure you don't miss any spots it's a good idea to do this in front of a mirror the first few times you try it and when you get to the middle of your mouth you'll have to change the toothbrush around always start up on the tooth on the gums and brush down over the tooth surface now you do the same thing on the inside of your mouth that you did on the outside when you get to the curve or Arch in the front of your mouth just take the end of the brush and Pull It Forward but remember to start up on the gum and bring it down toward the biting surface if you always do this little particles of food up under your gums will be squeezed out and can be brushed away in the lower mouth do the same thing start down on the gums and brush up the same thing is done on the inside of the mouth again in the inside of the front of the mouth just the ends of the brush are pulled over the teeth always starting down on the gums now when you get to the chewing surface the bristles are just laid on the tops of the teeth and the brushes rotated or vibrated try to force the bristles into the tiny tooth crevices well Danny Miss Johnson will give you an appointment to come back and get that filling polished so long Danny and look Miss Johnson is giving Danny a brand new toothbrush now he can keep his teeth white and [Music] clean well cap you didn't have to wait so very long did you Danny has his teeth all fixed up and he feels pretty good about it [Music] it really wasn't so bad was it [Music] Danny remember if you what's he doing why it's an old Superstition kissing a donkey relieves a toothache well how about this one for aching teeth run three times around the church without thinking of a fox sounds silly well that's what people used to believe luckily today they don't lean on fallacies about dental health instead they've learned the facts where some folks used to think of going to a dentist only when they had a toothache today they go for regularly scheduled examinations because they know their dentist is a specialist concerned not only with teeth but with bone structure muscles soft tissues he can prevent or treat problems which start in the mouth and may affect the entire body yes fallacies about dental health have given way to facts and it's a good thing for you and your family because a healthy mouth means a happier life a smile for life the father presented by the American Dental Association I had been coming down Dr bran Street for over 20 years now my wife and I were taking our daughter to him she was four and meeting him for the first time was the same ADV Venture for her as it had been for me she looked like a little round Apple sitting in the big chair and when the doctor's assistant put the dental bib on her she giggled and thought it was all a game as he examined her he told us she was the right age to start topical fluoride treatments topical fluoride treatments my wife asked the doctor explained that scientists had shown that fluoride strengthens the enamel against tooth decay topical treatments could be a big help during the cavity years but she would also have to help herself follow all the dental rules he said you'll see you'll have a smile for life as she left my little girl kept looking back because the dentist played such a nice game a most human game the endless effort to help and protect his patients day in day out from generation to generation a Smile For Life College days presented by the American Dental Association sometimes at football practice in college I thought of odd things like the face guard on my helmet how did Dr bran describe it protection of my smile for life one day thinking of that I knew I'd better tell the coach something I wanted to see my dentist you got a toothache he asked no not toothache then why the dentist I told him I felt something was wrong around my mouth that anything wrong there should be checked by my dentist so before you know it I was in Dr Bran's office being x-rayed what the doctor suspected the X-ray proved my Jawbone had a hairline fracture when did it happen I didn't know I'd felt something funny for about a week a week of all people people I should have realized that any mouth trouble could be a symptom of something serious that you should see your dentist right away not wait a week or for a six-month checkup a dentist is concerned with plenty more than cavities he said everything from fractures to oral cancer he took me over to the hospital where he and another doctor fixed my jaw wiring It Up In A system that made the tea formation look simple they told me I was lucky I hadn't aggravated the fracture letting it go uncared for as we left the hospital I figured I was lucky to have a Dr bran around and I smiled as best I could a Smile For Life the Adolescent presented by the American Dental Association when I was older going to Dr bran somehow seemed to come last on my list of things to do after all a guy has lots on his mind maybe I was overdue but I knew I'd get a friendly reception from Dr bran and I did he told me I had good teeth but the way I was going I'd never have that smile for life not only missing regular checkups but it looked like I was eating a lot of sweets too now how did he know that he showed me how I was a teenager and teenagers get careless seem to forget all they learn he pointed to a chart that showed that the teens were the years when most cavities occur snap out of it he said get back to the rules the way he taught me regular checkups proper brushing and easy on suets later on my way home I was sorry for the way I let the doctor down from now on teenager or no teenager I was going easy on sweets and regular on checkups when I was a boy I used to run to his office the guys like to kid me running to a dentist but he was some dentist his name was Dr bran and he always let me come 5 minutes early just so I could see his lab he'd let me touch things and tell me about them I used to get so excited I I tell Dr bran I was going to be a dentist when I grew up and he Pat my head and say fine fine only he never told me how hard it was to become one when I was older I learned he went to college for8 Years and had to study dozens of subjects not just Dental ones but physiology and anatomy and bacteriology of course I didn't know that then all I knew was that going to Dr br's was better than the movies somehow I I never did become a dentist but I'm sure glad Dr bran did what he showed me about taking care of my teeth has given me what he calls A Smile For Life P you're like everybody else I'm paying a lot more attention to physical fitness these days and one thing I've learned
