e e that is is is that that for hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and comment on them that's the important integral part of this whole thing is that you guys get to comment on them uh so that was taken from a home movie day that the Oregon archive did back in uh wow 11 years ago um and based they're based in Pittsburgh so a lot of that footage was based in Pittsburgh so I it's very likely that as a child I went to that Children's Zoo um cuz some of it was feeling really I was like wow that feels really familiar to me um and uh I should say that not this Saturday but next Saturday uh we're going to be doing in person a home movie day in Raleigh North Carolina at the wait what's the name of it where is it what what what is it hold on got it uh at the top Green community center on uh 401 South Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard in Raleigh uh from 1 to 4 so that's Saturday May 25th and what we do is we bring equipment and we let people um we digitize 10 minutes 15 minutes kind of of uh material uh for free and then put it on a flash drive and they get to take it home uh and this is something that we do to kind of help the community because we have this equipment and we do this normally and get paid for it so I can pay my employees and pay my bills but we do this periodically um out in the world so we used to do it uh every year uh a couple times a year in different locations um preo but now we're slowly coming back um so I'll talk more about that next week uh in the meantime let's learn about when you wear them you can be anything yeah anything you want to wear them some more [Music] sure things look real fine now hey they sure do don't you see B Willie we're about to take off [Music] [Applause] a [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Ezra Jack Heats did a lot of really great uh stories for kids um which I think I read some as a child certainly I have some other uh ones um adaptations I think I have whistle for Willie um I don't know if it's live action or not but still so great so great all right we're going to um yeah uh so this is in um that came from a most recent patch that we uh digitized from cornet collection even though that was ultimately made for Learning Corporation of America there was a period of time that Coronet was Distributing them when they were owned by Simon and Schuster blah blah blah it's it's a mess but um so there's some films that are just like are those cornet films I don't know this one is another film in that example this is a was distributed by prospective films which was a splinter label from cornet and I think this was made by someone in England this is Bruce Lacy uh this is an artist uh who I didn't know anything about and I only knew about this because my assistant uh kesan was scanning this and he's like oh my God you should totally check this out so this is uh a piece about Bruce Lacy who maybe you've heard of him but uh if not it's worth watching because visually it's awesome all right [Music] enjoy yeah some people want to know whether I'm an artist an actor a performer a showman a sculptor A Painter and I just say to them well I mean I never used to use the word artist for years because it was sort of a dirty were but now I say I am an artist I'm a sort of allrounder you might [Applause] say I find it very uh disturbing when I uh visit parts of London that I haven't been to for uh several months because I don't recognize them they've all gone and new uh buildings have been put up I find this very psychologically disturbing I used to work in an old shed at the bottom of my first wife's garden and then when I married Jill we lived in an old shop and gradually all the property developers are sort of chasing us and now the shop is being pulled down and now we found this old factory and eventually when the factory goes we'll probably uh be forced to work under Railway archers weather it's very cold here I'm going to go back to the old factory in a minute go to old factory and get in my airplane and fly all through the sky back to my childhood in the past nine ignition sequence starts 6 5 4 3 2 1 zero all engine running LIF off we have a lift off 32 minutes P the hour LIF off on Apollo 11 Tower cleared we got a roll program NE Armstrong reporting the roll and Pitch program which put aoll 11 on proper [Music] heading down range 1 mile altitude 3 4 miles 2195 oh it was a wonderful experience finally come down to earth uh during the second World War I wanted to be a a batt of Britain fighter planet and um I was only 15 years old so I had to make an airplane cockpit rather like this I call this my fantasy fighter and in my bedroom during the War I used to fly and um bomb Berlin every night um until I make a a space um capsule this has to double up as a as a space simulator um the thing is what I find in my life is that if there's something I can't do for real I try and live it in a sort of fantasy way the on was a man who lived in a house in the town he had a crazy room that was upside down with the flashing lights that did flick and spin what a crazy world this man lived in he shut all the doors and head for a hole in the sky a drifting dreams as time rolled by he saw strange things and he heard strange sounds transcendental Journey that would know no bounds crazy were the things he saw and crazy was his mind all open wide this is my secret room people only come in here by very special invitation so you're very privileged this is my memory box full of all my past all the things I've collected since I was a child uh I've even got Model A planes I collected gas masks buddas all radio sets I'm very rely come in here myself because uh most of my life is spent with the future or the present but sometimes I come in here for reassurance when my childhood dreams are [Music] here over here is where I keep all my hats I got hats from all over the world wherever I go I get a hat and I'm told by my friends and naturally I believe it that I have the ability to look like the nationality of the uh the country of the Hat I'm wearing this is Italy uh IL uch and um this is an American hat that Len Dayton brought back from America businessman's American businessman's convention in a hotel and um this is my um uh Viking hat you see how I look like a viking and uh the onlyy I have is when I put on a j a Japanese helmet which I collected um bought this for 30 Bob with all the um all the uniform if it look like a Japanese I've got to do that with my eyes that that arho Li cheese and um fed Li um this is my um American policeman's hat I bought back from America and if I can reach up here if you excuse me one second to us when I went to New York I went everywhere to all the fire stations to dry TIY and get hold of the fireman helmet and this was one from a fireman that was killed in the fire in New York and it's all battered leather you know this is um a martian helmet I made for a cigarette uh commercial showing that even martians smoke their cigarettes and this is a lovely helmet this is what the peruvians wear in um in the mountains the mountains on uh [Music] Peru so look just like a Peruvian I told you so didn't I ah uh it all really started years ago with my father taking me around markets collecting things I first started collecting swords and pistols and I went on to Japanese armor Buddhas and Idols musical instruments and costumes and all the things that I've collected are things that people used uh costumes cooking utensils I never clean them at all because for me they're wreaking in humanity some things are I've got still have the original dirt or the sweat uh like a driving wheel from an old motorc car still got all the grease from the person's hand and to me this gives me um an immediate touch with um you know it brings back an immediate memory I remember where I bought it and then it gives me um almost like immediate doorway back into uh into history into the past this is a box I've just my memory box my secret room and uh I probably haven't opened this box for at least 15 or 10 years um this is an airplane that I made during the war that my sister sat on within about 50 minutes of making it and in this box here um during the war we had to make airplanes out of bwood this is an fw10 and uh there's the good old spit fire made out of bwood and this plane here is a mosquito plane that was hanging up in the window of my bedroom around about 19 4445 when I was um downstairs getting um dressed to go to the bank and I just about got my pajama trouses off and I was completely naked when a German V2 rocket fell opposite and the upper half of my body was covered in plaster and the lower half of my body was covered in soot um literally caught my trousers down but when I went up to my bedroom I found that the German uh V2 had destroyed this model airplane I like to think of today that it's the only model airplane in existence in the whole world still here that was destroyed by enemy action during the second world war at uh mosquito and I'll I'll keep the pieces forever and in art school they taught me to be an artist they taught me how to paint academically and um I was a very brilliant art student I won a scholarship in the pr Ro the queen had one of my etchings h had a painting I had a silver medal first class diploma and a traveling scholarship but um and I went on a sort of a big world tour but when I got back uh to my sort of Studio romantically uh in the Attic of my um house uh I became bored with uh painting and I kept reverting to all those things I used to do as a child in an old secondhand shop in London I found uh some cardboard boxes that were filled with old Victorian or rather Edwardian negative um plates I I excitedly took them home got a book from the library on how to develop photographs converted my downstairs laboratory into a dark room and then magically saw these pictures in the wash hand Basin come to life they seem to have some sort of strange immortality the way the light uh had melted away bits of the pictures by getting into the camera I suppose or the way uh faces were in or out of focus in studying painting we' always been told it was immoral to um work from photographs in 1954 in my final year at the Royal College of Art I went in for the Rome scholarships and the subject they set for this competition was the flood and all my friends did paintings of uh Noah's Ark all animals going in 2 by two but for me as I I called myself a realist painter I had to from my own experience well there weren't any floods on at the time but I remembered the previous year seeing News Real photographs of animals stranded and I thought they're the real tragic figures because they can't swim or get into a boat or climb into the roof of a house so I went to the uh Co-op slaughter house completely covered in blood I was by the end of the day and saw 300 Bulls slaughtered it wasn't until I went into the hospital with tuberculosis towards the end of the war and started writing poems and drawing as like occupational therapy and so for the first time in my life for 18 months I had nothing to do I felt perfectly well I just thought about my own dreams and things and I was very worried cuz I thought I was going to die and so in hospital I started analyzing all the things that Society had taught me to do they said you mustn't eat pizza off a knife and I thought that's right cuz you cut your mouth so I said okay I won't eat pizza for night and then they said you must always uh eat app custard by bringing the spoon toward W you that way but when you eat soup you move the spoon that way away from music so I analyzed all these brainwashing things and accepted or rejected other ones and it was a great uh Renaissance I emerged a completely new person from hospital and I started drawing in hospital and I went straight to art school and when I got to art school they didn't want to know about all the things I wanted to do you know um I've been in the tap dancing troop since I was about 9 years old and I really wanted to do things um so what I was doing my activity that I wanted to do was was uh an expression of my psychological [Music] State and I went through a terrible period when I felt ashamed I felt like a leper at not doing this very high Noble thing called pain until I realized eventually the art was whatever the person doing it said it was and the critics can come along and argu but I look upon myself as like a sort of pioneer out in front I'm the one that says what it is and um you know because I know from experience that 10 years later they will agree with me you know [Applause] [Music] then I looked upon as in England a sort of Jack of all trades and master of none or Willow the Wisp a sort of a potterer but what I do is that all these different skills I've picked up very gradually I merged them all all together and I dare say you've guessed it it's my fantastic robot with great big red fat juicy lips the um originally I built her as a um a replacement for a rather difficult actress and she's called she has a name like all actresses have she's called Rosa bosm which stands for radio operated simulated actress battery or standby operated Mains and um a few years ago we were doing a production of the Three Musketeers and a girl we had playing the part of the queen of France was such a terrible [ __ ] to work with that I gave her the sack and built Rose a bosom to take her place and she um is capable of uh of giving me a kiss there are my love back again and uh I'll take her to her [Applause] places when uh when Jill and I got married a few years ago we took her to the wedding and she became the best man a to still to this machine I call the uh Universal integrator it's made up of uh six different um SPAC men or rather alien creatures from other planets six creatures all standing back to back all the heads are in a revolving frame all the bodies in another and all the legs in another and they're all revolving in different directions and pausing at different times and making up different figures so if you can imagine um 6 * 6 * 6 you get 218 different combinations of figures all for the price of six uh this is a piece of assemblage I made in 1963 which deals with the predicament of old people it's really about my auntie Daisy who was living uh with my mother and father in a very small room so this person here like my AE Daisy is living in a large coffin which is also a bed sitting room she's got her frying pan she's frying herself an egg her in her body are all the postcards uh all the memories from the family album The the wedding the um the holidays the marriage the medicine cabinet uh like most people's medicine cabinets are all full of grty old stale Gan medicines also thinking about the future uh a government eventually might build an old people's home which old people are living in boxes like this on a conveyor belt moving slowly towards the Mory so when they die the L is put on and they're sealed up forever with all their possessions I had an exhibition in an art gallery of all these things and all the Arts came along and they all criticized them severely they said this is an art this is propaganda this is sociology uh so I said well if it isn't art it's what art ought to be um synthesizers cost uh oh several hundreds of pounds and even thousands of pound but um I can't afford to buy one so I was determined all my life I've had an ambition to be a sort of famous composer and make sounds and music and I've never been fortunate enough or had the patience to learn to play a musical instrument now apparently there are um uh the ordinary keyboard on the ordinary Western piano can only play 100 notes but scientists tell you that the human here can distinguish a thousand separate notes so I say what's happened to all the other 900 now um by building a synthesizer you can actually hear all those lost notes uh I couldn't even afford to buy a keyboard so this is old firewood swn up um inside here there's an old um sort of a bit of brass curtain Railway which all the notes press down on [Music] we've recently uh just done our own space musical called electric element we work together with a group called The Alberts in which uh everybody wrote their own scenes expressing their own fantasies and feelings and philosophies and my oldest son John did a lot of electronic music for it Jill wrote her part too um having many different characters where she was uh really searching for her identity but in making all the costumes and films and painting the sets she found her her true identity before the show had even started [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] for me the electric element my part was um sort of early expressing early fear years I had in being married uh to a young woman Jill is 15 years younger than I am and so for years I had fears that um uh I would lose her and I had dreams and nightmares where I would be finding her and losing her again and so in the electric element in all the scenes with her um I would think it would be her there but she wouldn't know me it' be like a terrible Nightmare and um she'd go away and then gradually I'd find her again then I'd lose her again then I'd find her again again um like in our own true life we came together and we're happily married in the electric element we came together uh right at the end and we're United forever [Music] [Applause] [Music] a [Music] [Music] oh look what's that on that's uh that's mommy and daddy doing the British landing on the moon oh I don't want to look at it I don't like to much myself that's our art and Technology Program [Music] [Applause] [Music] come the flag won move yeah know that little know that Mom no wind on the moon there's no wind on the moon you see so flags flags don't um [Music] a [Music] [Music] all right so according to the comments uh Bruce rubbed some people the wrong way uh had very little patience for him uh but I I dug him I dug him you know and I looked at his Wikipedia and and he was always kind of on the periphery in the 60s uh working with lots of different um filmmakers and musicians and um yeah I you know I dig it I dig it you know it's someone I'd never heard of before and I'm like wow there's some really fascinating stuff going on here and uh you know I compare to what was going on in the United States at the same time there a lot of also really interesting performances and odd art um so I'm cutting him some slack that I'm just saying you don't have to uh we haven't I have a series of these uh next upcoming film here and uh I haven't watched any of them so let's watch this together and learn about the vowel a [Music] [Music] do you remember the vowels can you say [Music] them why acts like a vowel too sometimes do you remember that each each vowel has a short sound and a long sound what's the short sound of the vowel letter A A did you say a the short sound of a is a and what's the long sound a that's easy the long sound of the letter a is a it's the same as its name now let's listen to these sounds in some words [Music] at [Music] 8 do you hear the difference between the short sound and the long sound of a at eight Matt mate pan pain tap tape let's see what we can discover about these four pairs of words well in each pair both words have the vowel letter A but in one word the a has a short sound in the other word the letter A has the long sound the words in each pair almost look alike except for one thing what do you see that is different about the second word of each pair the second word has the vowel letter e at the end it's called a final e because it comes at the end of a word it does something special to the sound of the letter A that comes before it let's say these words again listen for the long a sound in each word that has a final e ready say the word as soon as you see it at 8 at8 notice that the final e has no sound of its own pan pain pan pain now be careful of this one mate Matt mate mat tap tape tap tape let's see what other pairs of words we can think of [Music] what about [Music] [Applause] hat and Hate [Music] [Applause] [Music] what about [Applause] [Music] [Applause] glad and a Glade where flowers grow [Music] and what about [Music] [Applause] [Music] s and sail now let's see if we can read some words what is this girl wearing she's wearing a cape and what is the boy wearing he's wearing a cap I'm going to show you a word that names one of these which one is it did you say cap that's right C A P CAP and what is this word yes it's c a p Cape it has a final e the vowel a comes before it the final e gives a the long sound what is this it's a can and what is this yes it's a cane now here's a word that names one of these what is it did you say can spell it with me c a n e can it has a final e the vowel a comes before it the final e gives a its long sound and what is this word yes it's can there is no final e so a has the short sound spell it with me c a [Music] n let's talk about two more words this is a pan of water and this is a pane of glass what is this word did you say pan pan has the short sound of the letter A spell it with me p a n and when you add a final letter e what is the word that's right it's pain with the long a sound let's spell it p a n e with some words you have to be careful because there is another word that sounds just the same pain but it is spelled differently spell it with me p a i n pain p a n e is the window pane and pain p a i n is something that hurts it won't hurt you to remember that when you see the letters a i together in a word they usually have the long a sound where are these people going they're going for a sail in a sailboat and what are these people doing they are having a sale but it's a different kind of a sale s a l e sale and s a i l sail both words have the long a sound say them out loud and listen to the long a sound in both words sail and sail there's another way to make the long a sound what are these letters yes they are a y and if you find them at the end of a word they will have the long a sound you probably use a lot of words like this every day ready for more words let's put some together in a sentence you may say day quite often B gay hey gray play Stay so if you hear a word with a long a sound at the end it's probably spelled with the letters a y before we finish let's play a game with some words the picture will give you a hint then say the word out loud as soon as you see it Mad May cap now be careful here comes a different way to spell the long sound of a main hey pale pale pal now let's see if we can remember some ideas that we learned about the short and long sounds of a we learned that when a word has a final e that has a consonant before it and there is a vowel a before that the vowel a has the long sound we learned that the final e has no sound of its own we learned that the letters a I give a the long sound and we learned that when
