e e e for in is hello everybody Welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show my name is Skip Alzheimer and that was some raw uh it was actually negative footage uh that we we when we scanned it we inverted it uh unfortunately there was no soundtrack because man I'd love to hear what was being said and all that footage was like all over the place um some Vietnam footage some party footage some cheerleaders was great uh so today uh we're watching s 16 and uh I probably won't be showing anything from the scanner because I'm working on something else right now which is I'm going to see if I can do this without breaking oh I think I just broke it yeah this is like um here's an anti- commercial for um all right uh for Elgato so that's an Ike projector a 16 projector that I use um but we have uh I'm working with a retired engineer out of Florida and we are trying to put a um inexpensive camera in it um and a raspberry pie so we can do a kind of a an inexpensive um scanner telesin for uh people um so I'm helping um do that uh anyways what why is weather this has got a real wondercat vibe to it but there's no wondercat in it but boy there's a lot of questions asked enjoy [Music] why does the sky fill with dark storms why does rain fall and why does it snow why is the we warm some places and why is it cold in other places what makes the wind blow why is the weather always is changing to help answer our questions we need to know something about the elements that make weather by using a drawing we can show that weather is a mixture of three things heat from the Sun the air that surrounds the earth and water each of these elements plays an important part in making all kinds of weather first let's talk about heat the sun radiates a continuous flow of energy about half of this solar energy is absorbed by the Earth's surface and changed to heat although the sun provides a constant supply of energy the Earth cannot absorb the same amount every day or everywhere the amount of energy reaching the Earth varies with the seasons of the year during the long summer days the sun is high overhead and shines straight down the Earth absorbs a lot of energy and becomes very warm but during the short winter days the Earth does not absorb as much energy the sun is low on the horizon and the sun's rays are spread over a greater area the earth's surface is not all the same color some areas are dark and some are light this affects the amount of energy absorbed from the Sun dark areas absorb more energy and are warmer light areas reflect part of the solar energy and stay cooler land and water surfaces heat differently a cross-section of the Earth surface shows that sun rays do not penetrate very far into the soil and only the surface becomes hot but sunrays penetrate water and by mixing spread the heat through a large amount of water for this reason on a summer day water surfaces are much cooler than land surfaces but at night the land cools quickly while water releases its heat slowly now the land is cooler than the water this uneven heating of the earth's surface is an important part of weather it not only helps determine how warm we are from day to day but it also affects the temperature and motion of the air we can think of air as a great ocean of invisible gas covering the Earth's surface the air is heated by contact with the earth air over warm areas expands and Rises cool air stays close to the ground and moves in to replace the rising warm air we call this moving air wind the wind blows because of the uneven heating of the Earth's surface cool air moving to replace Rising warm air during the day cool air Moves In from the ocean to the Hot Land the greater the difference in temperature the faster the air moves in the same way worldwide winds are formed as warm air rising from the equator is pushed towards the poles and cold polar air flows across the Earth's surface towards the equator but this simple circulation pattern is broken into three zones some of the tropical air is pushed down near the surface part then flows South and is turned to the west by the rotation of the earth forming the trade winds that blow in the tropical regions the rest pushes northward and is turned to the east by the spinning Earth forming a belt of prevailing Westerly winds in the temperate zone in the third Zone the rotation of the Earth turns the cold polar air Westward forming another wind belt that blows in the polar region these three major wind belts establish a general pattern of weather change for each region the prevailing Westerly winds carry the weather across our country from west to east now let's add water to the weather water is the only element of weather we can actually see but where does it come from come from and why can't we see it all the time water is constantly Rising into the air as an invisible Vapor it escapes from bodies of water moist land surfaces and all living things the warmer the air the more water vapor it holds if we could magnify water vapor we would see that it is made up of many tiny particles called molecules in warm air the water molecules move rapidly bouncing away from each other and the sky looks clear and bright but when the air cools the water molecules slow down and join together forming small droplets of water in the air now we can see water in the weather as a misty fog hanging over the ground or as a cloud floating overhead made up of millions of tiny water droplets as the air gets colder the water droplets continue to grow until the drops become so heavy they fall to the ground as rain if the air is very cold the water vapor in the cloud may freeze into snow that floats gently ly to the Earth sometimes raindrops are blown up through layers of freezing air and fall back to the ground as hail now that we understand how heat air and water working together can make different kinds of weather we need to know why the weather changes from day to day changes in our weather are caused by moving masses of air that can advance several hundred miles each day traveling along the weather path established by the Westerly winds when masses of cold air pile up in the polar region the cold air bulges Southward carrying cooler weather along its path masses of warm moist air form in the tropics and bulge northward bringing warmer weather as the two air masses advance and retreat they bring a changing parade of weather warmer or colder wetter or drier the kind of weather the moving air masses bring depends on the season of the year and the condition of the land warm air flowing in over a cold land can form a dense fog close to the ground when the land surface is warmer than the air mass warm moist air Rising upward is cooled and water vapor becomes visible in its many forms depending on the air temperature and how much water vapor the air is carrying when an air mass is forced upwards by a mountain range it is also cooled and water vapor becomes visible weather the most exciting weather is caused when air masses Collide as the cold and warm air come together the warm air is forced upwards and a Stormfront develops dramatic headlines tell us of the violent conflict between the air masses every day air masses move across the face of the Earth constantly changing the mixture of heat air and water that makes our weather all right so I haven't uh shocked myself yet but I've had to pull another uh projector to see why the takeup Reel is not working for um this I key that I'm working on um yeah a lot of questions at the beginning of that film lot of questions um this one I have a question about and uh this is directly related to what I watch before I go to sleep and this might be a too much information for some of you but basically uh I try to watch because I watch a lot of stuff in a day I try to watch stuff that uh doesn't have narration doesn't have people faces in it it's just kind of this Detachment so there's a lot of hands so I watch uh and also if there is narration it's in Japanese so I watch a lot of Japanese uh shows where it's either first-person people going through um riding trains and traveling through uh Japan uh or uh I also watch um this thing called process X which is just basically assembly line footage and also artisans making things um and so we've watched a lot of uh great stuff of um you know manufacturing casting uh giant pieces of equipment uh I just watched one recently that was propellers giant making giant propellers and how they did that and then also last night I watched one on tambourines so all that stuff is just it's tickles my brain but it's also enough for me to disengage and so I can just kind of fall asleep and have pleasant dreams of assembly line footage so what we're going to watch has narration in English and it takes place in the United States it is called The Whisper arm enjoy [Music] la oh whisper am not whisper arm whisper am most foundrymen will recognize this machine as an Osborne gram jolt squeeze pin lift molding machine from The Sound they will immediately know that this particular machine is equipped with Osborne's exclusive and patented Ram jolt the hard effective mold ramming mechanism before the introduction of ram jolt Osborne Engineers concluded that if jolting were possible during the squeeze the effective squeeze could be increased at least 50% over the theoretical squeeze based on the squeeze piston alone this one principle was responsible for the development and introduction of the exclusive Osborne Ram jolt mechanism production models of Osborne Foundry Equipment utilizing Ram jolt quickly Pro this Theory reports from foundaries everywhere gave evidence that Ram jolt units were providing a steady the assignment Osborne Engineers undertook a research program that would last for nearly 5 years the objective reduce noise levels iron would work the noise wouldn't find a substitute chemical experts were recruited compound pounds hundreds of them were formulated mixed molded tested and scrapped rubber wood Plastics Metals combinations laminations thousands of formulas were tried one material worked for the ram insert failed as the strike ring revise the formula and test again reduce noise levels all initial testing was conducted on actual Foundry machines in the Osborne laboratory a solid steel plate was mounted on the table to simulate mold weight sample inserts and Rings were built into Osborne stock equipment and the testing began testing that would run for hours days months evaluations calculations measurements endurance widths profiles wear projections involving literally thousands of precision readings on hundreds of samples failures were frequent one material that showed promise on one type of machine would fail on another what was the common denominator why didn't the same material that worked on the ram prove is effective for the Anvil jolt ring each failure was cut apart analyzed re-evaluated and changes made in the next Formula everything was recorded with cushioned equipment sensitive to a fault highly sophisticated techniques were developed to detect internal Force variations adversely affecting the material every test conducted included a total cycle with both an anvil jolt and the ram jolt squee squeeze action critical factors in venting and cooling the cylinder itself were to be considered initial calculations checking and crosschecking design features compounds heat friction tolerances stress and strain toughness is vital too much is trouble not enough out of the question how far how wide how deep questions like these were asked here and answered gauged by sound meters and more complicated equipment the quest went on the challenge reduced noise levels finally the challenge was met a new name was added to Osborne's proud reputation as the leading manufacturer of Foundry Equipment that name was whisper Ram a patented noise control jolt mechanism the research the prototypes the field testings have done their work now Osborne equipment with whisper Ram moved into reality with heat cold sand impact all in varying degrees kencast Incorporated Griffith Indiana specified two more Osborne Ram jolt squeeze pin lift machines for a new Facility by now whisper Ram noise control jolt was standard equipment two model 719 rjw Osborne machines were installed one for the drag the other for the coke [Laughter] kcast immediately endorsed the new noise control feature excellent mold quality improved working environment as more machines were built whisper Ram features were installed Osborne's famous Roto lift machine was converted the small Ram jolt squeezer was next and on it went machine after machine with whisper Ram noise control jolt the sweat the dedication the research was paying off these Osborne machines are at stuck casting division of stuck mold Works Incorporated Lancaster Ohio today a single line of 10 Osborne machines run side by side day after day making hard dense uniform molds to exacting specifications for both glass mold castings and a wide variety of jobbing work jolt roll over squeeze draw and close molds mechanically using large match plate patterns all of these operations with one operator and one machine the Osborne rotor lift seven newer machines include four Ram jolt squeezers and three large Roto lifts all with whisper am components as stuck orders more machines for their expanding needs the call to Osborne asks for quote more whisper am machines Fe Meyers company built a new Foundry in Ashland Ohio they too specified Osborne machines a pair of model 722 rjw Ram jolt squeeze strippers with whisper Ram noise control jol automatic controls include powered movement of the squeeze head and pre-selecting of jolt and squeeze TI Osborne's exclusive oil control pattern draw stroke guarantees smooth accurate stripping roller stripping frames and roll on rolloff extensions ease flask and mold handling other than the two machine operators a third man sets cores and assists with the closing of the cope and drag haves this culen drag bag setup at Fe Meyers company yields efficient production of larger tight flask molds just another example of the flexibility offered by Osborne's line of ram jolt squeeze stripper machines all of this and effective noise control too after nearly 5 years of research the ideas and testing have done their work they have given us the answers foundaries using our equipment offer testimony that the two features giving our equipment a mold so you have a master thing that you're uh going to cast and you make a mold with that black powder which I think traditionally used to be sand but now is some sort of other thing and what you're doing is you're you're trying to shake and Tamp and jolt so that all the particles are as close to the mold as possible and there's not any um you know like places that uh aren't against the mold then you separate the mold put it back together and then you pour molten metal into it and then you polish it or you cut off the flashing um yeah and so I guess the idea with that whisper arm or whisper am is that it's like slamming it but it's not doing it so loud so there you go uh let's see we've been watching films from this series the world cultures and youth this is sur's mask from Bali enjoy [Music] [Music] the dance of the demon the demon is ranga Queen of the witches and the dancer is me my name is Sama samandi UST mura I'm 16 years old and I live on the island of valy my father's name is ANUK a he's 62 and is the head of our dance troop he is my teacher in the ancient art of Balan dance Bali is part of Indonesia a country of 13,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean near the equator you can walk AC cross Valley in one day our village sabba has only 300 people and almost everyone dances or plays [Music] music people in sabba love my father's dancing but now he is getting old he says that soon he wants me to take over from him as lead dancer of our troop so he can concentrate fully on teaching young dancers [Music] B dance is a combination of Theater history or Hindu religion and music many of the dances portray Hindu misss and are to teach as well as entertain [Music] the ranga dance is my favorite and we're rehearsing it for a performance that our troop will give in 2 days at The Cremation ceremony of a dance master who died last week [Music] for many generations dance and music have been part of our family my father's teacher was his uncle Saga Wabi a famous Master my dad been dancing for 55 years he started teaching me when I was seven and I began performing when I was 11 years old my father says that a great dancer can become the character that he dances then every movement is precise and the dance becomes the magic story that has been passed on in Bal for thousands of years [Music] in B we often use masks when we dance and my father carved these himself in a month he will be giving his final performance and he says that I must dance with him as is the tradition in our family after which I will become lead dancer [Laughter] foree he says that now it's time for me to carve my own mask for that night when we will dance together [Music] [Applause] da d da da d da in Balan dancing all our movements must be strong and precise then the audience can feel the spirit of the dance teaching younger dancers helps me to noce little details and perfect my own dancing my father says that teaching is the foundation of our traditions and it feels good to pass on what my father had has taught [Music] [Music] me fore [Music] my father has decided that for his final performance we will do a dance called the prime minister's dance I think it's a perfect choice for it tells the story of how a firm compassionate leader passes on his skills to an able follower my father is displeased these new movements are still awkward for me he's a kind man but when it comes to dancing he is very strict with his students [Music] [Music] he says his leg has been bothering him more lately in two weeks our troop is performing at the temple by the ocean and he says I must take over from him then I think he's worried that I won't be ready in time [Music] tomorrow morning is The Cremation and this afternoon we are going to basaki the Mother Temple of Bal to make offerings for the master dancer who died [Music] [Music] speee [Music] fore spe [Music] our troop consists of nine dancers and 32 musicians in the gamalon orchestra we dance all over Bal whenever we are invited and at this cremation Festival but we will dance until morning [Music] go my go my go my [Music] go hey [Music] Valley nation is a joyous occasion with music and dance and artists that sell their handicrafts to tourists who come from all over the island we feel that burning the body helps the spirit to go on its way to a higher happier life [Music] and in our miss the white bull carries the spirit on its Journey [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] it will take me a week to finish my mass and it will be ready just in time I must work very carefully to in character and feeling then theask can help me find the true Spirit of the dance [Laughter] [Laughter] my father's friend mudio is 78 years old and he's loved for Reviving the ketchup monkey dance in [Music] Valley the dance tells the ancient Hindu story of how the monkey god hanaman rescues the goddess SAA from The Demon King Rana [Laughter] oh [Music] my father is very pleased but he says I'll have to work fast now we'll be dancing together in two days [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] this will be our final rehearsal before our performance together tomorrow night [Music] [Applause] fore spee foreign speech speech [Music] my father says he's still a little worried because my movements are not yet strong and sure I know he doesn't feel right he says he knows I can do it and I know too he says I must go to a choir place and try to find the spirit of the dance inside me then I will begin to perform like a master h [Music] [Music] [Music] done [Music] for [Music] [Laughter] [Music] had a copy of the Banes uh monkey chant and uh so good it was so great and you know we wanted to sample it and we had certainly heard other musicians sample it uh but none of them made it work like uh the original so to see it actually in a film is makes me very excited CU I didn't know I didn't know it was going to be in there so um anyways I am sitting here now trying to figure out where this Cog which goes on uh basically I'm having problems with the take Pi up on uh this iky and so I'm trying to figure out where this Cog goes and then where this goes this part so I'm going to have to look at metal which is missing on the one machine uh is called a clutch Cam and I think I figured it out so um we'll see maybe we'll we'll do a test drive tomorrow but uh thanks so much for joining us today
