e that for that for for for that for n me the a oh he all right you get the point um yeah we did some I did some math and uh looked at the episode number and it was 1100 so congratulations everybody uh that's the only celebration I'm going to do on I'm not going to do an 1100 minute show um yeah and I also did some math and I realized like when we get to 2000 I'm going to be 60 years old and boy that that uh that yeah I don't feel 60 years old I don't feel close to 60 years old and so that was uh sobering um anyways who am I what am I doing hey I'm skip Alzheimer and this is the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show and we've been showing UH 60 mm films for lunch 1,00 times that's what we've done and the total film count is more than 5,100 films uh from our collection and from collections that we've digitized for other people and things so some of you have been along for most of the ride and thank you for that I very much appreciate that thank you for the $1 uh we will spend it on um shelving cuz you know that's what we're going to do shelving so behind me I have a film scanner and uh we're going to watch slow motion studies of combustion uh oh KNX misspelled that and pre-ignition uh enjoy you like weird synchronicity you had me digitize that film about migrant workers there Wasing onat they were and he could them and other helpful things we fire and it draws us over the land through the air and across the sea do you ever stop to think as you drive down the road just what it is that makes your car go it's man's old friend fire when you travel a mile you sometimes Kindle and extinguish 10,000 fires under the hood of your car but you have never seen the fire that makes your car go very very few people have it all takes place down there under that shin Hood in each cylinder there is a fiery furnace gasoline is the fuel and the spark plug supplies the match yet we only hear the explosions and feel the result but that is not enough for scientific study we had to see these Flames so that we could study them but we were shut off by a wall of cast iron after many failures we built a special engine with a big window or Skylight in the top we are showing you that engine now and presently we'll let you you look through the window at the flame this engine doesn't look to you much like the one in your car because it was built to study the Flames inside and not to run a motorc car a great deal of extra equipment is required the engine itself is very simple it has only one cylinder this single cylinder operates in the same manner and does the same kind of work as each cylinder in your car but in one respect this engine is different because it has is the transparent Skylight we mentioned before when we get up above the engine we have a good look at this transparent top the window is of quartz 3/4 of an inch thick heavy enough to stand the great pressure against it and large and clear enough to give an unobstructed view of the combustion chamber the scale along side of the head shows its size here we see the spark plug or electric match that ignites the fuel here are the exhaust and intake valv and here the cylinder Barrel the head is clamped down on the cylinder block and sealed with a gasket to keep the gases from flowing out as they expand now you are actually seeing the gasoline burning just as it burns in your own engine of course you only see a flash because these explosions are happening at the rate of nearly a thousand a minute that's making things happen much too fast for the human ey to follow so we'll show you this action in slow motion that you may study it as we do these pictures are about a quarter as fast as ordinary Motion Pictures you often see this kind of slow motion used in movies we have slowed up the moving parts of the engine but still the burning process takes place so quickly that the human eye cannot follow it we can look at a piece of burning paper and see the flame spread but we had to build a very special kind of slow motion camera in order to see or photograph the gasoline flame traveling across the top of the Piston when the engine is running at 800 revolutions per minute equivalent to a road speed of 20 mph the flame travels across under the head in 1 100th of a second taking a picture with an ordinary camera with an exposure of 1/ 100th of a second is considered fast but if we set such a camera above this engine and had it shutter open 1/ 100th of a second after the spark happened we would only get a flash so we must build a super speed camera to take pictures much faster than 100 per second here is a sketch of this high-speed camera connected to the engine so as to take several pictures of the flame as it moves across under the head this camera must be capable of taking pictures at various speeds up to 5,000 per second so as to be slow enough let's see how it works the sketch shows the engine on the left the camera on the right when the gasoline Burns in the engine it produces light and this light passes through the quartz window to the mirror the mirror in turn reflects the light through the large lens the metal flywheel disc is fastened to the shaft of the engine and turns with it around the rim of the disc are 30 small lenses each of these lenses will focus the light coming through the big stationary lens through a little reflecting prism onto a strip of film the first of these lenses gets the light from the spark and the second lens gets the first part of the flame until a series of 30 snapshots have been made of the flame as it travels across the top of the Piston we will look at some pictures of the fire inside the engine taken with this camera while the engine was running smoothly these pictures have slow down the whole process about 200 times or about 50 times slower than the ordinary slow motion pictures so that your eye can now follow it if you look closely you can see the spark igniting the charge it is a little point of light that flashes on near the top of the picture at one end of the combustion chamber then the flame spreads out from this point of ignition just as the paper fire did only the fire in the engine spreads much faster the total toal time for the flame to travel across the chamber is 1 100th of a second you will notice that the forward edge of the flame is very bright this region is called a flame front and it is in this narrow Zone that the burning of the gasoline all takes place the glow or bright area appearing behind the flame front is called the Afterglow and is due to the burnt gases or ashes being compressed and heated to a high temperature to give off light this Afterglow has nothing to do with the burning of the fuel here is the way burning gasoline makes power a few drops of gasoline are put into a bottle it soon evaporates and this Vapor mixes with the air in the bottle we will now seal it with a cork holding two wires connect the wires to a spark coil and send an electric spark across the opening between the ends of the wires bang the fuel burns the gases in the bottle are heated and expand and push the cork out in an engine it is this same expansion that pushes the Piston down and gives power to the automobile here is the fire in the engine again notice how regular the flame motion is this is characteristic of the flame motion when the engine is not knocking this regular even flame motion results in a smooth increase in pressure pressure and a smooth running engine but if an engine is not satisfied with the kind of gasoline it has to use it registers a complaint its complaint is expressed in engine language listen to this pinging sound we call this type of audible engine noise the [Music] knock here are some pictures taken on the engine with a fuel that caused it to knock see how the flame front travels smoothly and evenly for a while but when it is partway across the combustion chamber another fire breaks out spontaneously in the lower corner this fire starts because the unburned gas has been compressed and heated in just the same way as the air in a tire pump becomes hot when you push the pump handle down quickly only in the engine it is heated a good deal hotter than a tire pump could heat it this spontaneous combust of the last part of the charge takes place in about a thousandth of a second and a large part of the gasoline in the combustion chamber Burns in this short time so the fuel Burns much more rapidly than when the engine was running smoothly this rapid burning causes the pressure inside the engine to rise too quickly the temperature increases also the rapid rise in pressure makes the sound we hear when the engine knocks we'll look at some of the these Knocking Pictures more closely the first one shows the position of the flame front just as the unburned gas in the combustion chamber starts to burn of its own accord the next picture is taken only 1 2,000 of a second later and yet in this short time nearly all the remaining gasoline air mixture has burst into flame in the third picture the gas is all burned the knock is over now we will compare these pictures with the corresponding ones taken when the engine was not knocking the original flame front travels at about the same rate in both these pictures but in the knocking combustion picture on the right you can see that the gas is burned much more quickly because spontaneous burning starts away ahead of the flame front as we said before this fast burning causes a sudden and violent increase in pressure and a noise you can hear an increase in the temperature of the engine and worst of all a decrease in the power you get get from the engine this high-speed camera is very valuable in finding out some of the things that happen inside an engine with it perhaps we can find out enough about how engines burn fuel why and some do not time learn how to control the burning process we then may be able to make engines more efficient and get what we would all like to have more miles of travel for each gallon of gasoline way by so that um when I looked at the real um part of it was in beautiful shape uh it was it was a little uh shrunken but the rest of it was super shrunken and crystallized and it's really strange so basically to geek out a little bit uh these films uh have an ass acate base that's the clear uh base and what happens is over a period of time that begins to break down uh and creates acetic acid and then that starts this kind of chemical process of of making it harder and worse um and it begins to warp and become crispy and uh brittle um but generally it's across the entire film but this one it was two separate takes and what I I did is I uh took it off the Reel the good part and then noticed there was a splice and then the bad part was all after the splice um so I guess there were this this film was made up of two-parts uh that were processed separately um and uh one of them succumbed to vinegar syndrome faster than the other um so very interesting to see that hey thank you Thomas uh so much for your support uh you've been uh an amazing um commenter but also uh you have been rewarding us for these anniversary shows and so thank you so much that will definitely go and pay for some shelving CU that's what it's all about um let's learn about the family of the world in Zambia enjoy its Waters support the plant life of the tropical climate through the wet and dry seasons and its fish are a source of food for the villagers there is no regular contact with the outside world for the members of the bmba tribe who live on the island when a boat comes into the village Harbor it is enthusiastically greeted by the children of the village the Waters of Lake bangu Olu also provide a tropical playground for The Island children and their elders she see there are no policemen on the island but there are no thieves and there is no electricity or public water system there are no motor accidents on thec because there are no trucks or cars to cause them the most modern vehicle is a battered bicycle that belongs to the mop family here in a rented store which is part part of the warehouse where the village oil and salt are stored the richest man on the island conducts his business father mopy is a tailor and with the help of his old-fashioned hand sewing machine he practices what is considered to be it looks like I've shown that recently shown it within the last month and I just did not mark Market accordingly so when I'm old enough goodbye out of school boom really great man [Music] I'll call glowed no kidding it was alive I still got it but you got a lot of other ones too got a lot of equipment man if I could get a job in electronics that's not for me crumby leftover jobs that's what I'll get something I have to live with oh come on I think it better if I take what I can get it's up to you just thinking about it makes me light up like that old radio tube you need a sar of something you I'm looking around on my lunch hour for something better he used to talk his way about school work too maybe but now I can choose how's Tony fine is he working oh off and on still got to get married I think so yeah what are you doing around here anyway when you quit school last year didn't you get a job in an office for a while but well you know me in English class well those guys in the offices they can't spell either so they expect me to do all the spelling form it's a real cooky world you know [Music] [Applause] [Music] go hey so we We Begin retraining our older men and the uating procedures of the new Milo automatic sorting and filing machine as a result we will be forced immediately to let men go in order of seniority [Music] [Music] come on boys glass is over [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right [Music] next hi Bonnie oh hello Mr will you hear from Doug not much he's called a couple of times and but I was when I have homework you know bunny I wish Doug hadn't just dived out of here I think we could have worked out different courses well Carlos says Doug's doing great keeps changing from one job to another yes I know he's been in here for work permits according to Carlos Doug's really getting some place well who knows could be excuse me sure about [Music] it fellas you have 2 minutes to finish those [Music] applications what would you say if you got a teacher who instead said I don't care how you right but be proud of what you're right [Music] [Music] yeah we may have something you out of high school yes sir graduate well no uh not not exactly oh no point in filling this out come back in about 3 weeks Mr we may be putting some extra rappers on then and for Ray and Maryanne here's a disc to set your feet at Dan [Music] I went to look for you mother together it's great let's talk about it tomorrow huh goodbye Linda come on there isn't this a dance [Music] Doug Miller how are you hi Mr Willard OH uh this is Mrs Willard good evening DG just uh looking in at the dance how's your family your father real fine thanks still working at the um Shilling plant like always are you still at Bolton's no I got something better coming up that's great I've been having some talks with Carlos he wants to pull out start working too yeah I know Doug if that new job doesn't work out why don't you drop by the state employment service ask for Ralph Norman yeah sure you'll like him he's been out here working with our guidance program yeah talk with them tell them I he'll have some ideas okay thanks Doug I'll tell him you'll drop around good night Doug nice meeting you I see you worked at a filling station last summer how'd you like it I uh like the times I had a uh chance to uh help help out with the motor I like cars always have Mr Norman like to fix things huh sure tried to get a job in a garage sometimes one thing now even those guys want to you know Doug if you had a completely free choice what would you really like to do in life get a job like my father he's quite a guy huh 20 years on the same job how often have you talked to Mr wet couple of times maybe when he called me in why should I talk to him I wasn't it it for college a come on Doug you got the wrong idea Mr Ward is there for everybody yeah we've been working with him to try to help you kids find the area in which you have talent things you can do that maybe you never even thought about don't even know about we know jobs we know what the employer says he need now our job is to help you see where you fit the things that you have to do nowadays to make yourself fit I know where I fit Mr Norman I know what I want all my life I've only wanted to get out of school and work like my father and his father what's so wrong about that times are changing Doug it's different now all right I know you need a job there's a life insurance company they need men now the work's not going to be any better than your other jobs but it'll give you some money it'll fill in thanks think about what I said want to see you again thanks a lot [Music] just temporary Doug had some big lofs at the plant just doing this to fill in keep some money coming just [Music] temporary Doug it wasn't just your father they let go about a quarter of their Workforce was a tough decision but to stay competitive the head of modern but what's going to happen how can they all live our Messengers pay hey well we're working with Sheldon's Personnel Department we're trying to see which people can be moved up to new jobs what new training might help yeah suppose you want my dad to go back to school too you never stop going to school you always go on learning especially now today education is the key if you want any doors to open tomorrow that's why we worry about you dropouts I'm not a Dropout I just left school Doug we try to like of places to send you for work we do we used to find jobs for kids as elevator operators but look at your new buildings today automatic elevators even the old buildings sure there are new jobs interesting jobs here look 60 different jobs all wide open and waiting but they all want a high school education they all want to see that lousy piece of paper You're darn right but there's more to it than just that I mean you can't just walk around dressed in a high school diploma and expect a big glad hand to reach out for you the men who do the hiring today look behind the diploma at you now you gain an awful lot in those extra couple of years it takes to earn that piece of paper just waste time no no in the shop you work with your hands in math you work with your head in English or whatever just being there for two more years learning to concentrate to work in details to finish a job why should employers take on kids who can't even finish one job one thing you can do in this changing labor market and that is to prepare yourself figure out where you want to go what exists for you what you want I want a job we can aim you at something specific Doug along with part-time schooling take this booklet home take your time study it think about it I have no time Mr Norman I need a job you want to spend the rest of your life in some kind of a job that all right all right I have nothing today come back tomorrow morning at 10: I may have something [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Hey kid got a cigarette for me but it just doesn't pay off anymore Carlos to leave school like this I have my parents permission at least let me arrange a part-time job along with some classes you've got a great potential but not this way please Mr Willard I I have to go all the way now look at dog he said at the Haron plant Carlos this is the time not to play Follow the Leader hey I'm going to see a a job anybody interested where har I hear they hiring no man I got a practice session maybe we're running to D come on if you do Sayo to [Music] huh don't bother kid we're not hiring anybody [Music] hey dog hey dog [Music] a job isn't just a job anymore the whole crazy thing is more complicated it seem so simple no you just run around back and forth like one of those rats and one of those things at the lab at school you don't know Carlos nobody knows until you're on the outside I know dog I just have to look at my father in his job and I just have to look in the mirror every day and I know so don't you have to be even better prepared to run into walls ah you're an idiot Carlos you like school see see you're an idiot see now look you have to become what you want to become why have to be caught like your father look at me I'm what my father is both of us it's really crazy sometimes you have no choice you always have a choice maybe the choice is a lousy but there's always something to choose I had an offer man didn't need a high school education real big offer work for a de you did that no no but I had the choice and it's a pretty lousy choice between doing that and moving garbage in a plant and that's what it adds up to for me and my father so if you go down to the employment service and ask Mr Norman they know unskilled job are drying up you dry up with them and you get dollar and dollar I was wrong Carlos you don't have to be a jerk too better than your father you're a guy who can it's you man what's inside you what do you want to do I with burnt out radio tubes all your life then you come back with me my not you are not you're not such an old man come back with me that's a simple choice not anymore Carlos enough for me not sure I have the guts for [Music] [Music] [Music] wow that was wonderfully intense um and over dramatic uh especially that scene where he like you got a cigarette for me man that was uh that was over the top with the music uh and yes the uh there was a lot of uh looped audio um dialogue that maybe when they shot it the first time the audio was not good and so they um did ADR on it so it was added later and the level of you know and quality of acting changes and it was jarring but um I still love that that over that intense um my father you know that's really that's why we collect these films is you know is a film about dropping out and getting a job and uh let's make it as noirish as possible um thanks for tuning in today very much appreciate your uh eyeballs and your comments on our 1100th show um I think I'm going to call it early cuz yeah I didn't plan accordingly that uh families of the world Zambia I had not marked in my database that I had shown it so it was still lingering uh and then you guys said nope we've seen this and then I was like yeah this sounds familiar so anyhow uh join us tomorrow what is tomorrow Wednesday yeah join us tomorrow and we'll watch some more films and learn more things um because that's what we do um very much appreciate your kind uh support and uh we will see you tomorrow um take care we love you bye for
