e for that that that Hello everybody welcome I'm skip Alzheimer this is the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm films and that was uh some unknown family um going to Camp uh sorry I started a little bit late today uh I had an engineer visiting the archive uh we are slowly moving forward with a renovation project where we are going to create a film Vault space not not strictly truly a film Vault space but a a space that will hold all the films so we will pull stuff off um all the storage units that we have and there will be one space um dedicated to climate controlled um moisture controlled uh film storage and we'll keep it cool down there but not 50 degrees like uh a lot of film vaults have anyways so the engineer was here and we were talking about uh whether the basement is that case um I'm looking at comments uh ghost that haunt the brothel of a building are not going to like it um I don't know if this was a brothel but there was certainly some sketchy stuff going on here um and uh so when I worked with the wond chosen people uh pffr they in an interview described the archive as a haunted orphanage um and man I'm trying to find that interview uh where they say that because that is the best thing uh to say about our archive is that it is definitely haunted um it wasn't an orphanage but it was sketchy uh anyways uh let's go ahead and learn about a foreign culture uh we have a lot of films like this that are really great and this one is I think it's Fez or FES uh and it's a story and it's subtitled so get out your reading glasses enjoy [Music] [Music] for [Music] for for [Music] speee [Music] [Music] speech [Music] that's [Music] me oh PR fore [Music] fore fore [Music] [Music] ising soe [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I this [Music] foreign speee [Music] fore for Moe for for for [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] oops it's such a quiet movie that I missed the fact that it was over and hope it wasn't uh dark too long um yeah so the whole process of mending that I got really into like how he was mending the uh the pot um and then you know there's other aspect of this which is the fact that um you know he's living in a world where he's becoming obsolete very quickly um because uh mass production has made pots easier to just manufacture um so anyways there you go that's a summation of that so behind me I have a film scanner and we have a film setup uh that I have not seen uh which is great we don't know it's the the title of the film is stamp of approval so this could go anywhere this really could go anywhere um any guesses write in the comments what you think this film is stamp of approval um and that's part of like why I like collecting films is that it's like what is this is a mystery uh it does say that it was produced by marchu films which was a uh a film company and it was also produced by University of Michigan so again I have no idea that gives me nothing uh I got it from Cape Fear Technical Institute who knows all right any guesses uh let's see meat Meat Inspection comment codes stamp of approval postal workers uh SNH Green Stamps uh tattoos over butt cracks uh Calgary Stampeders cars a Stampy the elephant all right you guys are hilarious um all right let's let's figure out what stamp of approval is enjoy [Music] n [Music] today the art of metal stamping has come to play an enormous part in our lives the automobile industry has established entire plants devoted to stamping operations such as the Ford M company Stamping Plant at Wood Haven Michigan the stampings which are made at such facilities go out to assembly plants throughout the country in these plants you'll find a wide variety of pressing all the way from huge 2,000 ton models which are able to turn out 300 Truck Body sides per hour to much smaller faster presses the kind that can spit out a healthy 60 reinforcement brackets per minute there are presses of all shapes and sizes all varieties of power and sophistication and Performing all kinds of stamping operations blanket forming shearing Droid PL piercing and any other work that can be done best and most economically by stamping whatever the operation the principle is quite simple a sheet of metal placed between two dyes is subjected to pressure this pressure forces the metal to reshape itself to the Contours of the die because there is nowhere else for it to [Music] go before the development of present day stamping capabilities the Assembly of an automobile was a much more arduous task involving many more hand finishing procedures advances in Metallurgy help to change that opening new possibilities for product design and manufacturer today metal stamping plays such a prominent role in automob manufacturing that a steady stream of Steel is required to keep the plants operating if the factory runs out of steel production lines have to shut down and delivery schedules for parts will not be met this means careful coordination between the steel mill and the factory the type of Steel required is low carbon anal steel which is ductal enough to be forcibly shaped without tearing or breaking yet strong enough to hold its shape once it is formed a single steel coil May weigh up to 30 tons 60,000 lb in order to maintain production a little more than a 15 days supply of such steel is kept on hand or about 36 ,000 [Music] tons it takes nearly 2,000 tons every day to keep this plant in [Music] [Music] operation the steel must be used before it gets too old because after a period of time the mechanical properties will change making it difficult to produce acceptable [Music] [Music] Parts the steel coils range from about 1/2 to 2 m in width depending upon the use for which they are intended the thickness of Steel to be used in stamping may vary but it usually ranges from 1 to 3 [Music] mm when the Press opens the steel is moved into place automatically [Music] every time that the Press closes the correct size of sheet is cut this shearing operation turns the coil of Steel into convenient flat sheets or blanks for later use by other presss [Music] these particular blanks will be used to form body side panels for pickup trucks each blank will go through a series of operations on a wide variety of presses each adding a step toward the final completion of the part [Music] the first press stamps the basic shape of the body side in a drawing [Music] operation the upper and lower halves of the set of dyes in the Press come together and for Force the metal into the shape of the panel in a single stroke care must be taken in the design of the dyes as well as the adjustment and operation of the press so that the metal doesn't tear while it is being [Music] stretched the park moves on to the the next stage a trimming operation the piece from which the panel is being stabed is a little larger than the panel itself so that the outside edge can be held tightly in the Press while the rest of it is worked to its proper size and shape the part is almost in its final form [Music] again it moves this time heading for a restriking operation where any slight variations in the shape of the panel are corrected the panel now has the exact Contour specified for the part [Music] finally holes are pierced in the panel by punching Out The Unwanted [Music] met sometimes when stamping is finished several parts may converge at an assembly stage where they're spot welded together to form a more complete unit the parts to be joined together are clamped rigidly in a fixture to hold them in the right [Music] position heavy copper electrodes are pressed together on opposite sides of the sheets the passage of current through the electrodes produces enough heat in the metal to form a spot web [Music] each part is carefully inspected for Flaws which may affect appearance or usability imperfections are marked [Music] the part is put aside for reworking or possible re blanking if the part is found to be totally unusable it is earmarked for scrap conveyors which are running continuously below the Press floor receive discarded parts and trimmings directly from the machines above the scrap is automatically carried to a collection Point outside the plant where it will be bailed and sent back to the mill for recycling [Music] after the parts have been inspected to make sure that they are free of scratches dents or rough areas that would show through the paint they are sent to the shipping dock to be delivered on closely controlled schedules to assembly plants throughout the country [Music] it is essential that parts do not become damaged in any way during [Music] shipment care is taken so that the parts will not bump or scrape against each other on the journey to an assembly plant [Music] the procedures for stamping are much the same whether it's a large part which is being stamped or a small one the ton rating of the press the speed with which it works and the variety of operations a single press May perform all can vary but the principle Remains the Same [Music] during drawing or forming operations a lubricant is sprayed onto the metal surface or sometimes onto the dyes themselves this is to reduce friction in the D thus minimizing heat and preventing the part from tearing or causing damage to the Dy [Music] certain presses are equipped with a number of different Dives and the part is transferred from one position to the next in the course of stamping transfer presses can perform many separate operations in the course of making a park [Music] the forces exerted on dieses in stamping Machinery can reach as many as 2,500 tons each time the Press closes this means that the D must be able to withstand enormous pressures strike after strike hour after hour day after day for many years dyes were cut by hand today they can be cut automatically from carefully engineered patterns a metal probe will trace the Contours of the D from the pattern signals from the probe are relayed to a machining device which works in Tandon the Dy material is a steel alloy which can produce from 4 to 6 million stles when dyes are changed on a prep it is not always because they are worn out perhaps as in this case the run on the part has been completed and a different set of D is being installed for an entirely different [Music] part fitting the dyes into the machine is an extremely exacting job when the two halves come together they must match to within a few hundreds of a millimeter if they don't the machine might make defective parts or damage the dieses in the operation of stamping presses the trend today is toward more automatic facilities in fact there are whole lines of presses which do their job according to a preset program tp3 machine repair report tp3 George di repair report line 16 d report line central control allows close monitoring of both machinery and production maintenance wall report line 20 maintenance Walder report line 20 go ahead Joel advances in metal Staffing are an ongoing thing there have been many refinements many developments many applications since the days when man discovered that metal could be shaped to his light it is still open to new advances new challenges in the future more ways will be found to automatically control the stamping [Music] process better procedures will be developed to make Parts stronger without making them more expensive new and lighter weight materials will be taking the place of steam because of its speed accuracy and relatively low cost stamping is the answer to many manufacturing requirements aah [Music] [Applause] aah [Music] wow um that was incredibly specific but as you know we love incredibly specific beautiful footage of uh metal stamping equipment and assembly lines and mustaches and yeah that's a Johnny Paycheck song right there my man's a metal Stamper yeah there'd be some sort of thing there but uh yeah that was good love it uh all right I got a film we're going to go over time wise but you know that's what that's fine because I started late uh importance of selling it's important sells are important enjoy [Music] [Music] the economic system under which we live takes its form from an endless variety of daily business transactions different from anything in the past different from that of other lands the economy of a democracy is based not only on the needs of the people it serves but also on their wants and their desires in such an economy the function of selling is of major importance for selling not only helps to fill our needs but also through its creation of new wants and desires constantly urges the standard of living higher and [Music] higher selling as we know it can exist only where there is freedom of choice a freedom we take for granted from earliest childhood [Music] yes Freedom of Choice freedom to decide whether when what and which to buy or not to buy this is one of the foundations of a democratic econ iomic structure the buyer is all important in a free economy he determines its course by constantly voting in the marketplace for the products of his choice that product may be a can of food or a railroad car whatever it is it continues to be in the market only if people continue to buy it just as the office Seeker in a democracy must strive to win the votes of the people so must the products in a free economy compete for the buy preferences by presenting their benefits to the customers it is the salesman's job to bring these advantages to the prospective buyer's attention effective selling takes many forms some of it is non-personal where no salesman is present the selling done through mail order cataloges is one example here the description of a product sells the customer non-personal selling is done through coupons in magazin and newspaper ads the supermarket grocery is an example of self-service selling and it seems that nowadays one can get almost anything from a vending machine but the bulk of selling is personal selling with the salesman offering an essential service to his customers he provides knowledge and information geared to their specific needs and wants and through persuasion he increases the use of products by the public I suggest that you get two pairs of the same color that way you won't have an odd one to discard and you save money we've made a fact-f finding study of your production problem by using these larger and faster hydraulic presses you can cut your cost 9 and 1/4 cents per unit and that's a saving you can pass on to your customers to sum up this policy offers a means of Greater security to your family if anything happens to you your wife is guaranteed an income we're reducing the price on this item because of unseasonable weather we don't want to carry it through the winter it'll make a real extra batter for your customers you'll notice that these new Subs are completely dry now watch the difference in appearance right here on your own chair this electric typewriter is designed to require less seport it ought to increase the efficiency of your department by at least 30% here's a new typ plastic with a special fiber content it will add more life to your product here's a sample of a new form of penicillin doctor oh yes I read about this in the journal if you will ship in Carlo Lots we'll Route Around the heavy traffic points and save your customers half a day thus day in and day out through the whole complex structure of business activity salesmen of every type are at work analyzing customer needs giving information about their products and creating an interest and a desire for new products the modern salesman aware of his responsibil ilities to his customers as well as to his company performs a service to both and through creative salesmanship he performs a service to the public too but is selling really necessary wouldn't the standard of living continue to rise without the efforts of selling and salesman well let's look back at our world a few years ago and it gives off more light than a mantle yes but how long will one of these buls last longer than a mantle that little filament glows in a vacuum keeps it from burning up doesn't seem possible and with electricity you'll have more light for filling out your prescriptions oh I carry this lamp with me wherever I go it gives good enough light I don't know my horse goes fast enough for me why with a car like this you can have the pleasure of going into town every month I got too much work to do to go gal venting into town that often no water pan to empty and no cake of ice to melt your food keeps longer and stays fresher and crisper yes but how can it stay cold without ice it just doesn't seem possible yes the luxuries of yesterday have become today's Necessities through creative selling salesmen calling on customers have been responsible for the creation of wants and desires which did not exist before through billions of individual ual sales markets have become larger production costs less prices lower to the consumer thus the salesman aided by advertising helped pave the way for a better standard of living today through mass production and the selling activities of salesmen millions of people drive and other Millions have jobs in fields directly connected with the automotive industry to which many countries contribute material because sales were able to sell the use of electricity today millions are employed in the electrical industry and the face of our world has been changed recognizing This Modern business both large and small usually places its Chief sales executive in a top management capacity in many companies this executive is the Vice President of Sales who is responsible for sales policy report according to him is the sales manager who has direct charge of the sales force related sales activities such as advertising marketing research and customer service also report to the Vice President of Sales so that all work together as a team yet even before these men go to work on a product a great deal of selling has already been done originally an idea had to be sold and for another thing this machine can spin dry the clothes without there being lifted out I see some of our salesman's reports have suggested that feature and even more important than that is that this design makes possible a completely automatic washing machine controlled by timing switches that's quite an engineering problem let's take a look at these drawings here again it may not have happened just this way but like every new product the automatic washing machine had first to be sold to an organization which could develop produce and Market it within that organization the engineering department had to be sold on designing the new product to soup customer desires production had to be sold on producing the machine at the lowest possible cost purchasing had to be sold on the need for obtaining parts and supplies at the best prices the sales department had to be sold on the idea that dealers would handle the new machine and that people would buy it the finance department had to be sold on the belief that the investment would make a profit for the company and its stockholders all these selling jobs backed up by research are necessary before any new product can be made ready for the market then another phase of selling begins from an engineering Viewpoint we're ready to go ahead we have tested this newest model in the laboratory and in consumer homes and it's satisfactory in every way what about the sales forecast Ed well Lord and I have been over the market search figures they show that there are about 5 million potential customers and you can add to that at least a quar of a million new homes each year figuring our price and the problems of educating our Distributors dealers and salesmen on this new machine and the servicing problems we may run into we put our first year's forecast at about 40,000 how about it Walt can you build as many as Ed Lloyd say they can sell well we'll have to add about 200,000 Square ft to our present Factory spaces if we can do that I think we can build them what about the working force well personnel's making plans now to get us the skilled men that we need we'll get them somehow Frank's been checking into the problems of purchasing we have sources lined up now for steel copper glass and rubber we're working on the others if Ed and Lloyd can sell them we can build them good what about the report on financing I've been talking with the bank about the terms of a loan for new equipment and capital we're going to need about $3 million so tooling up for the new washing machine was begun following this the Vice President of Sales together with the sales manager and the managers of advertising and marketing research started work on the sales campaign well these are the answers that Housewives gave about what they dislike most about wash day one lifting wet clothes two cleaning out the water the salesman's reports of customer wants together with questionnaire survey were valuable in determining which sales appeals would be most effective that third objection the whole idea of wash day that's our main sales appeal our machine eliminates the whole idea of wash day hands never touch water let's take those objections in order lifting wet clothes got the most answers on that point we can develop a very effective sales program once policy had been set it was up to the sales staff to work out the complete sales campaign in this company there were three regional managers in charge of eastern central and Western regions of the country for each regional manager there were several district managers each of whom supervised a number of salesmen a meeting of the regional and district managers was the starting point for the sales campaign there the new machine was unveiled remember what that market survey showed a survey based on interviews with more than 10 10,000 Housewives we know that there are 5 and a/4 million potential customers for this machine and in the next 10 years almost every home in the country should be a potential customer and we've gone over it in detail once again take a look at this machine check it Point by Point against the housewives own expressed wants and remember this always this machine is completely new it's the first of its kind now man and let's have your questions will we Market through our usual wholesalers Yes except that this year we'll have to limit our Outlets we're going to have a session on that this afternoon what material will we have to show the housewife what this means to her we've worked out a campaign that's really going to get our new product across National advertising Direct Mail dealer displays not only that but we're planning to have demonstrations to women's organizations in key cities thus the sales Executives analyze the many problems of marketing the new product such as the types of wholesale and retail outlets to use and the quotas to assign the salesman each of the district managers in this meeting had under him a staff of salesmen who called on wholesalers they had to be familiar with the wholesaler's problems problems of warehousing installation and servicing problems of inventory in turn the salesman who called on the retailer had to know how to help the retailer sell the product satisfy his customers and at the same time make a reasonable profit it's another washing machine isn't it no it's entirely new and will outs sell anything else in the field it's the first of its kind an automatic washing machine but I I don't have enough floor space to put in another line oh this isn't another line Mr Patterson that's just one basic model surely you have enough space for just one machine that will help bring in new business for you it's automatic huh mhm I wonder if my clerks will be able to figure it out well I'll tell you what I'll do when I bring in your sample I'll personally train each one of your clerks what's more we have a presentation to help guide your clerks they can't go wrong you see here's how it works thus selling may call for much more than making a sale it often includes personal service to the retailer helping him in every way that may be necessary to keep his stock moving and to help you introduce this machine we're running a national advertising campaign reaching potential customers right in their homes suggesting that they come to your store to see this machine demonstrated and here's a decal to tie in with those ads and these are folders and bulletins for your customers with your name imprinted and these are radio scripts and mats for your local advertising the housewife is going to have to come to your store to see this machine demonstrated you should average at least five demonstrations a day and so the new product was launched through a long series of selling processes everything was focused on one point the housewife who had to be convinced that this new machine would be of real service to her it must be complicated to be automatic like that won't it go out of order easily no ma'am it's really worked out quite simply and there's a year service guarantee that goes with it oh I'm afraid it cost too much but look at the backbreaking work it saves just set the dial and that's all it does look as if this little cylinder would get the clothes clean it's been thoroughly tested in consumer homes can you adjust the water temperature Yes Man it washes either hot or warm you just turn this little pointer then you pour soap into this little hole and that's all there is to it no lifting of wet clothes from one tub to another uses less soap just set the dial gentle washing action washes warm or hot completely automatic completely automatic completely automatic the new washing machine sold well that first year now the second Year's plans had to be made how many would be produced the key to this question was still another question which faces all manufacturers in a competitive enterprise system how many can we sell llo and I have been over this very carefully he's talked to our regional managers and they've checked with their district managers and their salesman and dealers and we believe that we can increase our sales quarter this year by a third that's right our first year is going well we're about 9% above quota right now this coming year we're going to have stronger competition you know two other concerns are bringing out automatic machines well Fair competition is a good thing for all of us gets more people acquainted with our type of product keeps you fellas in engineering and production and sales on your toes and gives the customer a better product for less money we're going to have to push to meet our new quarter it'll depend in part on how soon we got our new model on the market what about it w well we're retooling for the design changes now we'll Supply demonstration machines in plenty of time what about the increased quota can you increase production IM match well it'll mean increasing our skill production Force buying two new presses and getting additional warehouse space uh let's see the setup of your sales quarter on a monthly basis thus the sales department working as a team with other Departments of the company developed a creative selling program to launch a new product this new product found its beginning in a public need a need recognized and reported by salesmen calling on dealers in touch daily with the public and while we have Illustrated a selling program developed by a large company with large resources similar programs have been developed by thousands of smaller companies and by countless individuals with a good product or service usually starting in one community one state or one market at a time the work of every salesman whether he realizes it or not affects the whole business structure where the salesman sells far more than his particular product he is selling an increase in the standard of living in a Democratic Society based on freedom of choice and dedicated to a Better Living standard for everyone there must be selling on a large scale if we are to maintain mass production for until it is sold no product has any business value nor can it have any effect on raising the standard of living thus the salesman is the spark plug in a competitive economy in creating sales he helped to create jobs for millions of people on the production lines and among the 15 million who work in the selling and distribution of goods and services the salesman in the store the insurance salesman who sells an intangible investment the salesman who calls on the retailer the freight salesman who sells a service the salesman of raw materials the manufacturer's representative the sales engineer all in their different jobs are tremendously important in helping to maintain employment and to build up the ever increasing flow of goods which is the lifeblood of a Dynamic economic system wow um so much to unpack there that is I would love someone to uh someone who is a economist to look at that film with hindsight uh and do a comparison contrast to uh nowadays um you know everything that's great and horrible about the United States is in that film that's my take on it um thanks for tuning in today very much appreciate uh you allowing me to be a little bit late um it's exciting what it's going to be happening over the next year uh with the archive exciting and tedious cuz we're going to having to schle a bunch of stuff but um yeah uh join us tomorrow we'll watch some more films and we'll talk about them it'll be great if you like what you saw you can hit the thumbs up and the Subscribe those are great ways to support us without paying anything Jeremy thank you for contributing via the super thanks button and you can also contribute via the ko-fi.com avgeeks or the patreon.com avgeeks that money is going to go by shelving uh we have a lot of shelving that we have to get new shelving and replace the old crappy rusted shelving with new stuff so thanks everybody we will see you tomorrow we'll learn more about preacher Frank take care
