e is oh heck and it just ended um yeah so that was some home movie footage that we scanned uh for a client and uh it happened to have a Mayday celebration in there um this is pre-World War I I think it's uh early late late 30s I think is when that um was shot but um happy May um I was looking to see if I had any labor related Mayday celebrations but I have yet to find them uh in the meantime let's look at another type of worker the honeybee oh did I mention I'm skip Alzheimer and this is the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films well yes it is and yes we do um yes I am enjoy [Music] [Music] the honey bee is probably the most important of our useful insects honeybees are social insects living together in societies as they've done for millions of years since long before Human Society began some wasps are social insects too and all termites and all ants this is a natural Hive a honeybee Society bees constructed this Hive in a hollow tree bees are also raised in artificial hives cultivated for the wax and honey they produce a healthy honeybee colony is made up of about 60,000 bees each social insect has a special job in its Society one be is much larger than the rest the queen the Queen's main job is to lay eggs she might lay as many as 500,000 in a lifetime of 2 to 3 years watch as she deposits one egg in this cell most of the eggs that the queen lays hatch into larvey that will become male drones or female workers most of the bees in a hive are workers during the summer the first third of their lives the workers feed and care for the newly hatched larv and clean the hive worker bees begin their jobs in the hive when they're about 3 days old at the age of 5 days workers start producing a substance called royal jelly and feed it to the young larvey when this nursing stage ends a worker turns to other tasks now the worker becomes a builder these workers are making the Combs of the hive the worker in distinctively builds each new cell in a perfect six-sided shape a hexagon these cells make up the [Music] Combs the worker builds the cell with wax which is produced in its own body and stored in eight pockets on its stomach some of the worker bees become guards they protect the hive against anything that tries to approach it only the workers and the Queen have stingers no matter how big an enemy is the Bold guards will attack and sting it another task of the workers is to fill cells with the nectar which will ripen into honey they also fill some cells with pollen and add a little honey to make a food called be bread for the larv the last 2third of workers lives are spent working outside the hive as foragers collecting nectar and pollen the nectar that the workers gathered from flowers will be mixed with chemicals produced by their bodies and slowly changed into honey in the [Music] hive bees draw out the nectar with their long tongues that can extend deep into a flower a nectar is stored in the honey stomach of the bee this search for a nectar in pollen helps many flowers fruit trees and farm crops to reproduce [Music] as the worker moves around in the flower pollen dust sticks to its fuzzy body [Music] the bee moves from flower to flower on the same or other plants each time it enters a flower some pollen rubs off the bee onto the pistol this pollinates the plant Farmers have used bees as pollinators for thousands of years bees carry the pollen back to The Hive in smooth areas on their back legs that are surrounded by stiff hairs these are called pollen baskets and when these pollen baskets are full the pollen May weigh about a third as much as the bee itself another job of the female worker bees is to feed the males the drones there are several hundred drones in the hive the male bees have only one job to mate with the queen all the drones fly out with the queen for a single mating flight but the queen mates only with about 10 of them the long long flight exhausts the drones and all of them die after this mating flight the queen has fed as much royal jelly as she wishes then the queen lays eggs fastening them to sell walls with a glue that her body makes eggs that will hatch into female workers are fertile male drone eggs are not a cell's size and shape may be the clues that tell a queen which kind to lay as the eggs hatch into larve each one has fed the royal jelly at first those that are to be workers or drones are fed royal jelly only for a short time constant feeding of the royal jelly to a queen causes her to grow larger and develop in a different way from the other larv the workers enlarge the cells of the larve that will develop into Queens these cells hang downwards from the comb after feeding the larv for a certain number of days the workers seal their cells with wax in a few days the larvae spins a thin cocoon about itself now it is called a pupa the inactive Pupa it cell capped with wax slowly changes into an adult 21 days from the time the eggs were laid the adult bees chew their way through the wax and emerge ending their complete metamorphosis from egg to larvae to Pupa to adult their old cells will often be used again before the new Queen emerges the old Queen and about 3/4 of the workers leave The Hive in search of a new one this is called swarming the old Queen and the bees that have gone with her begin to live in a new home the workers begin their search for food again they load their honey stomachs with nectar and return to the new [Music] Hive they dance in a variety of patterns to communicate certain information to other workers the dance shows that there is more food where this food came from and how to find [Music] it back in the old Hive a new Queen is about to emerge she cuts off the wax cap and frees herself immediately the new Queen searches for the other Royal cells now she stings their occupants to death for there can only be one Queen in a hive after mating she returns to the hive continuing the life cycle of the honeybee one of the oldest social insects on Earth [Music] so uh I watched um that movie The Beekeeper the Jason STM movie and he don't don't their take on uh bee and social insect behavior is not correct at all it's completely made up um basically um you don't protect uh the sick and the old you basically throw them out of the hive because they are wasting resources um and there's no such thing as a queen killer so there you go um see the movie if you like that type of thing um it was hilarious uh all right uh I have a film set up behind me it is uh bones and muscles and it's actually made by a Japanese educational film company and it was distributed um in the US by International Film Bureau so enjoy e [Music] [Applause] we move our bodies by using muscles and Bones Under the Skin let see how muscles and Bones [Music] [Applause] work there are many muscles under the [Music] skin this is a specimen of the muscular system of the upper body the muscles that are attached to the Bone are called skeletal muscles what do you notice about the size and shape of the different [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] muscles the muscular system of the frog is the most convenient specimen to study the function of skeletal muscles this is the lower body of a frog without the skin it's kept in the same condition as in a living creature muscles are controlled by the nervous system but here we use a special arrangement to move them these muscles move in the same way as in a living frog the muscles are alternately Contracting and relaxing now let's find out when the muscle exerts Force by attaching a weight to it this muscle exerts Force when it contracts how are muscles constructed a muscle is made of very fine fibers each one is made up of bundles of these fibers the bundles of muscle fibers relax and contract these motions are recorded on the black paper to the left each fine fiber is called a muscular fiber a muscle is made up of many bundles of these every skeletal muscle is connected to the Bone by strong cords of tissue called tendons all the muscular fibers in a muscle contract at the same time to generate a strong force the muscles in our bodies generate force in the same way these are skeletal muscles in the arm how do they move our arms this model illustrates the mechanism of the arm motions usually skeletal muscles must work together in pairs as the upper muscle contracts it pulls on the tendons and on the bones to which the tendons are attached and the arm is bent as the lower muscle contracts the bones are pulled straight while one muscle contracts the other muscle relaxes a pair of skeletal muscles pull the bones to which they're attached so you can bend and straighten the arm as you wish how are bones connected this portion is called a joint in a joint bones are connected by tough white bands called ligaments the contacting ends of the bones are covered by flexible cartridges and a lubricated by a special liquid which fills the oops man you go to the bathroom just for just a second and then suddenly everything falls apart um so sorry about that uh let's watch um this other film featuring Japanese people called World cultures and youth yiko the paper maker and I'll try to figure out why this crashed all right e [Applause] [Music] speech forign know [Music] [Music] my name is yoshiko Fujimoto and I'm 13 years old I live with my brother nagashi my parents and my grandmother in a tiny vage of Ura in Japan our country is one of the most modern in the world but you can still find a few places where we are keeping alive our ancient [Music] Traditions Japan is a small irland country in the Pacific Ocean close to the Asia Mainland and obar mura near the central mountains is known for its 700 year old tradition of making paper by hand [Music] though my parents say there are only a few Masters left making large paper panels in the old [Music] [Music] way [Music] for speech foreign foreign foreign speech fore speeech [Music] [Applause] [Music] each need that [Music] [Applause] making paper by hand is hard work but it's really a lot of fun in our paper making Club at school 12 of us are learning to do our own designs our OB mura paper is special because when finished it looks like a painting only no paints are used it's all just paper [Music] we make paper from the bark of the coal tree which grows around our village the bark is steamed stripped from the branches and cleaned before we get it then we boil it to make it [Music] soft finally when the bark is broken down into tiny fibers our teacher Mr takachi shows us how much starch is needed to give the paper its proper stiffness the mixture is drained to a wire screen and almost magically what's left on top after it's dried is paper to make our AA style pictures we add colored dyes to Coal Solutions and by applying this to the paper base we can build up any design we like layer by layer my own designs are improving and last week I made a present for my grandmother a forest scene that's ready now Mr tekashi says my work is very promising and wants me to meet his friend Mr Ando a master paper maker in our village Mr Ando is looking for an apprentice and might be willing to try me I would be very honored [Music] my father and grandmother both think my work is good and my father say he too would be honored if I were accepted by Mr Andor Mr tekashi is going to introduce me at our Japan culture day the day after tomorrow [Music] la go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] for oh no Mr and is the same man we ran away from the other day [Music] is very nice and he says that I can work with him in my spare time he says the work is difficult but I want to [Music] try take [Music] [Applause] ah fire foree [Music] foreign speee [Music] Mr and Mrs andle have been making paper here for over 30 years and they even made the paper Shi doors for my aunt's house the paper making that is unique to auar mura came here only 35 years ago when the Great Master Mr Fuji who invented this art form moved here from Tokyo Mr Fuji taught five apprentices and Mr Ando was one of them now now handmade paper is dying out it's a rare art and the andle's work is among the finest [Music] [Music] right [Music] Mr andle in Japanese we say andosan says it takes years of practice to learn how to tilt these big screens just enough for the paper to have an even [Music] sickness andersan says he is very concerned that so few young people are continue our paper making [Music] [Music] tradition foree [Music] [Music] for for [Music] [Music] today anos San has set a task for me to design and make my own panel of art paper this way he says I will discover if this is truly what I want to do and he will be able to judge my work andosan says that after we prepare the Koo branches for steaming I must go off by myself and feel with My Soul what it is I'd like to portray he says this is the secret of great art for [Music] [Music] spee spe foree speeech [Music] for [Music] Chee [Music] TR [Applause] fore foree fore [Music] tonight Mr and Mrs andle are going to the hot springs for the weekend and tomorrow after school I will start my panel so it will be ready for them to see when they return I never thought this work would take so much time but by Sunday my panel will be done and my brief apprenticeship will be over [Music] I don't know I'm so confused I like making paper but I've been falling more and more behind at school and I just don't think I can continue I'll tell the andos when they get back I know they'll be disappointed but I don't know what else to [Music] do if I hurry I'll just have enough time to go home and change before meeting the andos to say [Music] goodbye for [Music] [Music] [Music] foree fore foreign speech fore [Music] [Music] Mrs Ando did the calligraphy herself it means good fortune and happiness and they want me to have [Music] it andan says that my design is really very good he says he can feel the bamboo forest in my [Music] panel andan says he is surprised that I am discouraged and don't want to continue with my apprenticeship Mrs Ando likes my work too and she's sure that I can Master it if I don't give up she says she enjoys working with me and that I am like a daughter to them they feel that I should continue working with them from time to time until I finish my schooling perhaps I am giving up too easily I do like the work and I really like them very much too and I do have a good idea for a new design I'd like to do [Music] I really dig that series uh We've shown others in the past and it's basically young people um in these countries and doing something that's either Craftsman related or uh some sort of talent uh that's related to that country um and you know the stories of course are uh uh you know made up but yeah it's pretty cool uh all right so um the scanner crapped out um because it ran out of drive space but I think I can still run it so uh we're going to watch the remainder of bones and muscles and see how it ends enjoy body smoothly wait a minute so basically what happened is uh the scanner slowed down because of the um because of the drive wasn't keeping up so I need to bounce it back and let's try it again let's now look at some of the main joints this is a model of the shoulder joint this round portion fits into the socket [Music] this is an x-ray of a shoulder [Music] joint this is an elbow joint and this is an x-ray of the elbow [Music] the big round end fits into the deep socket e [Music] this is a knee [Music] joint we can bend our backs forward and backward let's see how the backbone is constructed let's first x-ray a backbone from the neck to the center of the back and to the waist many similar pieces of bone are connected like beads each bone is called a vertebrae this is one of the vertebrae because the backbone is made of many pieces of bone like this connected by joints we can bend the back in all directions when we breathe our ribs move this is an x-ray of the chest 10 pairs of ribs are attached to the breast bone and to the backbone these form the rib cage the lungs and heart are protected by this cage of bones in our bodies about 200 bones form the skeleton most of these are connected by joints and move smoothly let's examine the bone groups in various parts of the body what are the bones in your arm like rodlike bones and flat [Music] bones these bones make up the left arm [Music] what about the [Music] leg this is a left [Music] leg the skull is made of many flat bones joined firmly together they form a solid sphere and hold an important organ the brain the skull is made of many bones all these bones are members of only one skull we've seen that our skeleton is made up of a great number of bones of different shapes short ones long ones flat ones all of distinct forms these bones support support our body and protect important organs from birth until adulthood our bodies grow continuously this is an x-ray of a child's hand and this is an adult's hand a of course the bones in the adult's hand are larger than those of the child's how do bones grow this is a bone of some animal's leg a bone is hard outside and contains a soft inner tissue called marrow it grows at these portions near its ends do you know where it grows thicker this is an enlarged view of a bone portion this external film is where bones grow thicker bones are living organs in which blood is circul culating therefore they grow longer and thicker small babies grow up to become adults because bones grow our bodies move with power and Grace [Applause] our bodies are supported by skeletons and skeletons are moved by muscles at a great number of joints to perform countless numbers of body [Music] movements your muscular system and your skeletal system work together to help you move [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right tissue tissue I mean that's a British pronunciation of tissue tissue um but yeah I I wish I had so gaken uh did uh quite a few uh animated films like paper cutout animations that uh cornette distributed um that were just beautiful and I have never seen a liveaction gaking but there you go um anyways uh yeah my brain is all kind of like maybe I need more coffee and maybe you can
