Welcome to the AV Geeks Lunchtime streaming show where I need to mute YouTube. Anyhow, uh how's everybody doing today? It's Friday. Um this is uh today's show is uh kind of a repeat of stuff I've shown over the last 5 years, but uh a lot of it is great. Most all of it's great. Um, and uh, somebody at least mentioned it recently. And then I got uh, uh, this. Oops. What happened? Something screwy's going on. Then I got uh, this from old radios, which is uh, Rodney fighting Wondercat. And I was like, wow. And somebody in the comments uh said uh they wanted to see the film that Rodney is featured in, which is an amazing film. And I've only it looks like I've only shown it once. It's Super Goop. Uh it's this amazing film that was shown in the ' 70s. Uh it's animated mostly and it's teaching um commercial uh criticism to kids. It's teaching them to be critical of what they're being shown on television and it's it's glorious. It's so good. Uh so here it is. Super Goop. Enjoy. [Music] Super Goop. Ooh, Neato. But it has a special prize in it and it helps you go big and strong. What makes you think so? Because it tells you on television. Please, Mom. Please, Mom. Please. Uh, when will you ever learn? You have just witnessed the power of a great actor. Me. I, Rodney Weatherbottom, am a great actor because I can make you want something that you didn't want before. My latest greatest starring role is in behalf of this uh delicious cereal. I am an actor in television commercials. Want to [Music] see? Oh, super goop. Super goop. Get your sweetest super goop. Eat it up and loop the loop. Sweetest super duper goop. Oh, super goop. Super goop. How I love my super goop. The loop. Whoopdedoop. Sweeter super goop. Get your sweeter super goop. It's fun. Rather good performance, don't you think? Ah, if you only knew how we work to bring you this um magnificent new cereal. We start with this cereal which is not so good because the factory has taken most of the food values out. And then I put in lots and lots of sugar. Yeah. Then it's extremely necessary to put back in a little of the food value that the factory has taken out. The advertising has got to say how big, how strong, how nourishment it makes the kiddies. So H. Yeah. Delicious. Rodney. Hey, Rodney. Oh, yes sir. Yes, sir. Where is it? Where is it? You're holding a production. Oh, right here, sir. Right here. Uh, just let me Oh, a box. Oh, put it in. No one's going to buy a cereal in a little box like that. What's the matter with you? Oh, yes, sir. Yes, sir. Uh, how about this, Chief? Not enough [Music] cereal. That's better. Lots of air. Big box. makes kids think they're getting more for their money. All right. Yes, sir. Very important. Now, the test. The test. The test. Oh, yes, sir. The test. Oh, the test. Yes. Oh, the test. Oh, yeah. Let me give you the test. Oh, here's the test. Delicious. Great. More sugar than anything on the market. Going to wipe out the competition. Make a fortune. Congratulations, kid. Don't just stand there. Get out and market that product. Great idea. Make a fortune. Tons of dough. Baby can't use you. But but but cheapers, mister. Oh golly, mister. Out or I'll call the cat. Oh golly, Mr. Goody. Here. Kitty. Kitty. Kitty. Mice. Dreadful little creatures. Rodney Weatherbottom. Charlie, how goes it, old boy? H same old stuff. Buy a little, sell a lot, you know. There you are. A new cereal. You and I are going to make a TV commercial. Yummy. You don't think all that sugar might cause an epidemic? As long as they have a tooth left in their heads. All right. What do we call it? Something that'll make them want to buy it. Super something. Super goop. Fantastic. Super goop. Make a fortune. Can't you hear those kitties now? Please, mommy. Buy me some super goop. Huh? We'll make everybody in the country want something they wouldn't touch if it weren't for our TV commercial. Okay, now Roto, let's see. Kids buy anything a superhero tells them to. I've got it. Suppose you play Super Cat. All right. Watch this. He's what? cornered the world supply of super goop. Chief, this means that children no longer can have their delicious, nutritious, super sweet Super Goop. We can't let him get away with that, Chief. Right, Chief? [Music] [Music] Down. [Music] [Music] [Music] What do you think? M not bad. Not bad. But let's see if we can make kids really want this stuff. Want it? Huh? Let's say you're a kid watching TV. Now, kids want a lot of things, right? I mean, they want to be popular, huh? Gee, yeah. I want people to like me, right? Eat Super Goop and people will like you. I mean, what else do you want? Huh? I want to grow fast. And you want to be stronger than the other kids. Oh, and I want to be smarter. All you have to do is eat Super Goop and you can be all those things. Really? No, dummy. We just tell kids that. Oh, and then they'll ask their mothers to buy the stuff and we all get rich. Roto, now let me just think the perfect TV commercial. Watch this one. Eat super goop. It gives you energy. It makes you grow big. Big big [Music] think we're overdoing it a little. Rodney, kids don't actually grow faster because they eat this. Really, don't they? No, we just say they do. Oh, so we can't show them growing that fast. I mean, it would be dishonest. Well, then how about this? [Applause] Can I play? Nah. You want to use my my scuba diving outfit? Nah. Want to play with my rocket that I got for my birthday? Nah. Oh, please. Please, Gerald. C, can I have some of your Super Goop? Please, please. Huh? Oh, please. We're getting there, pal. Eat super goop and you'll be popular. The envy of every kid on the block. Gee, you're lucky. Eating Super Goop every day. Got to get in something about muscles and eating super goop makes you so strong. And we have got to have a prize in the package. A prize? False teeth. [Laughter] Haw with all that sugar. They'll need them, boy. [Music] [Laughter] And there's got to be music so it'll sound exciting, right? And don't forget it's sweet, right? And it'll end this way. Oh, super goop. Super goop. Get your sweetest super goop. Eat it up and loop the loop. Sweeter super duper goop. Oh, super goop. Super goop. How I love my super goop. Loop the loop. Whoopdeoop. Sweeter super goop. Get your sweeter super goop. It's fun. Fantastic. I can hear it now. Now, Isabelle, you may not. Mommy, please. Please buy me some super goop. Mommy, please. [Music] Come on, kids. You're going to be late for school. Mom, there's a new cereal out. Oh, no. No more new cereals. And it's called Eaten Swedom. Not until you finish the Super Goop and the other six kinds I got for you. Oh, mom. Don't you want us to grow big and strong and we get a prize? Come on. Come on. Off to school. If you get it for us now, we'll be the first ones to have it. Come on. Come on. Off to school. They've just seen my very latest TV commercial. Watch your TV sets, folks, for my great performance selling eat. Also, I do a magnificent job of selling cupcakes, vitamins, and toys. Don't forget kids, I can make you want things you don't need and never even heard of before. [Music] Oh, hey. [Music] Uh yeah. Um so that was the same animator and director as Down and Dirty Duck, uh which is an extremely adult uh oriented feature film that was trying to capitalize on the popularity of Felix the Cat. And um yeah, it's incredibly it's not it's not great. It's a It's an interesting artifact, but I don't know. It's not worth the racism, homophobia, just bad taste. I don't know. There's other bad taste films. Um, yeah. So, so good though. That film is so good. Super Group is amazing and require it should be required viewing for uh kids because the advertising that they're exposed to is outrageous. Absolutely outrageous. Uh here's a British film that loosely involves cereal. The shrinking of treehorn. Enjoy. [Applause] [Music] Something very strange was happening to Treehorn. The first thing he noticed was that he couldn't reach the shelf in his closet that he'd always been able to reach before, the one where he hid his candy bars and bubble gum. Then he noticed that his clothes were getting too big. Oh, my trousers are all stretching or something, said Trehorn to his mother. I'm tripping on them all the time. That's too bad, dear. I do hope this cake isn't going to fall. And my sleeves come down way below my hands, so my shirts must be stretching, too. Think of that. I just don't know why this cake isn't rising the way it should. Mrs. Aberil's cakes are always nice. They always rise. Treehorn started out of the kitchen. He tripped on his trousers, which indeed did seem to be getting longer and longer. At dinner that night, Treehorn's father said, "Do sit up, Treehorn. I can hardly see your head." I am sitting up. This is as far up as I come. I think I must be shrinking or something. I'm sorry my cake didn't turn out very well. It's very nice, dear, said Treehorn's father politely. By this time, Treehorn could hardly see over the top of the table. Sit up, dear. I am sitting up. It's just that I'm shrinking. What, dear? I'm shrinking. Getting smaller. If you want to pretend you're shrinking, that's all right. As long as you don't do it at the table. But I am shrinking, said Treehorn. Don't argue with your mother, Treehorn. [Music] He does look a little smaller. Maybe he is shrinking. Nobody shrinks, said Treehorn's father. Well, I'm shrinking. Look at me. Treehorn's father looked at Treehorn. Why, you're shrinking. Look, Emily. Treehorn is shrinking. He's much smaller than he used to be. Oh dear. First it was the cake and now it's this. Everything happens at once. I thought I was shrinking, said Treehorn, and he went into the den to turn on the television set. Treehorn liked to watch television. He lay on his stomach in front of the television set and watched one of his favorite programs. He had 56 favorite programs. During the commercials, Treehorn always listened to his mother and father talking together, unless they were having a boring conversation. If they were having a boring conversation, he listened to the commercials. Now, he listened to his mother and father. He really is getting smaller. What will we do? What will people say? Well, they'll say he's getting smaller. I wonder if he's doing it on purpose just to be different. Why would he want to be different? Treehorn started listening to the commercial. The next morning, Treehorn was still smaller. His regular clothes were much too big to wear. He rummaged around in his closet until he found some of his last year's clothes. They were much too big, too, but he put them on and rolled up the pants and rolled up the sleeves and went down to breakfast. Treehorn liked cereal for breakfast. But mostly, he liked cereal boxes. He always read every single thing on the cereal box while he was eating breakfast. And he always sent in for the things the cereal box said he could send for. Today on the cereal box was a very special offer of a very special whistle that only dogs could hear. Treehorn did not have a dog. But he thought it would be nice to have a whistle that dogs could hear, even if he couldn't hear it. Even if dogs couldn't hear it, it would be nice to have a whistle just to have it. He decided to eat all of the cereal in the box so he could send in this morning for the whistle. His mother never let him send in for anything until he had eaten all of the cereal in the box. Treehorn filled in all of the blank spaces for his name and address. And then he went to get his money out of the piggy bank on the kitchen counter, but he couldn't reach it. I certainly am getting smaller, thought. He climbed up on a chair and got the piggy bank and shook out a dime. You know how I hate to have you climb up on the chairs, dear Treehorn put the piggy bank in the bottom kitchen drawer. That way I can get it no matter how little I get, he thought. He found an envelope and put a stamp on it and put the dime and the box stop in so he could mail the letter on the way to school. The mailbox was right next to the bus stop. It was hard to walk to the bus stop because his shoes kept slipping off, but he got there in plenty of time, shuffling. He couldn't reach the mailbox slot to put the letter in. So, he handed the letter to one of his friends, Moshi, and asked him to put it in. How come you can't mail it yourself, stupid? Because I'm shrinking. I'm shrinking and I'm too little to reach the mailbox. That's a stupid thing to do. You're always doing stupid things, but that's the stupidest. When Treehorn tried to get on the school bus, everyone was pushing and shoving all the way back on a bus. Step all the way back. Let that little kid on. Treehorn was helped onto the bus. You can stay right up here next to me if you want to, cuz you're so little. It's me, Treehorn, said Treehorn to his friend, the bus driver. You do look like Treehorn at that, only smaller. Tree Horn isn't that little. I am Treehorn. I'm just getting smaller. No, but he gets smaller. You must be Tree Horn's kid brother. What's your name? Treehorn, said Treehorn. First time I ever heard of a family naming two boys the same name. Treehorn said nothing. When he went into class, his teacher said, "Nursery school is down at the end of the hall, honey." "I'm Treehorn," said Treehorn. "If you're Treehorn, why are you so small?" "Because I'm shrinking. I'm getting smaller." "Well, I'll let it go for today, but see that it's taken care of before tomorrow." We don't shrink in this class. [Music] After recess, Treehorn was thirsty, so he went down the hall to the water bubbler. He couldn't reach it, and he tried to jump up high [Music] enough. He still couldn't get a drink, but he kept jumping up and down, trying. Why tree horn? That isn't like you jumping up and down in the hall. Just because you're shrinking, it does not mean you have special privileges. What if all the children in the school started jumping up and down in the halls? I'm afraid you'll have to go to the principal's office, Treehorn. So, Treehorn went to the principal's office. I'm supposed to see the principal, said Treehorn to the lady in the principal's outer office. It's a very busy day. Please check here on this form the reason you have to see him. That will save time. Be sure to put your name down, too. That'll save time. And write clearly. That will save time. Treehorn looked at the form. There were many things to check, but Treehorn couldn't find one that said being too small to reach the water bubbler. He finally wrote in shrinking. [Music] The principal looked at the form and then he looked at treehorn. Then he looked at the form again. Oh, I can't read this. Looks like uh sherking. He You're not sherking, are you, Treehorn? We can't have any sherkers here. You know, we're a team and we all have to do our very best. It says shrinking, said Treehorn. I'm shrinking. Oh. Uh, shrinking. Eh. Well, now I'm very sorry to hear that, Treehorn. Uh, well, you were right to come to me. That's what I'm here for. To guide, not to punish, but to guide. To guide all the members of my team to solve all their problems. But I don't have any problems. I'm just shrinking. Well, I um want you to know that I'm right here when you need me, Treehorn, and I'm glad I was here to help you. Uh, a team is only as good as its coach. Goodbye, Treehorn. Uh, if you have any more problems, come straight to me and I'll help you again. The problem isn't a problem once it's solved, right? By the end of the day, Treehorn was still smaller. At the dinner table that night, he sat on several cushions so he could be high enough to see over the top of the table. He's still shrinking. Heaven knows I've tried to be a good mother. Well, maybe we should call a doctor. I did. I called every doctor in the yellow pages, but no one knew anything about shrinking problems. Maybe he'll just keep getting smaller and smaller until he disappears. No one disappears, said Treehorn's father positively. That's right. They don't. But no one shrinks either. Finish your carrots, Treehorn. The next morning, Treehorn was so small he had to jump out of bed. On the floor under the bed was a game he'd pushed under there and forgotten about. He walked under the bed to look at it. It was one of the games he'd sent in for from a cereal box. He had started playing it a couple of days ago, but he hadn't had a chance to finish it. The game was called the big game for kids to grow on. Treehorn sat under the bed to finish playing the game. Where had he left off? He remembered he just had to move his piece back seven spaces on the board. He was so small now that the only way he could move the spinner was by kicking it. So he kicked it. It stopped at number four. That meant he could move his piece ahead four spaces on the board. The only way he could move the piece forward now was by carrying it. So he carried it. It was pretty heavy. He walked along the board to the fourth space. It said, "Congratulations and up you go. Advance 13 spaces." Treehorn started to carry his piece forward to 13 spaces. But the piece seemed to be getting smaller, or else he was getting bigger. "Well, I don't want to get too big," thought Treehorn. So he pulled the game out from under the bed and moved the piece ahead slowly from one space to the next, getting bigger with each space until he was his own regular size again. Then he put the spinner and the pieces and the instructions and the board back in the box for the big game for kids to grow on and put it in his closet. If he ever wanted to get bigger or smaller, he could play it again, even if it was a pretty boring game. Treehorn went down for breakfast and read the new cereal box. It said you could send for 100 balloons. Don't put your elbows on the table while you're eating, dear. Look, said Treeart. I'm my own size now. My own regular size. That's nice, dear. It's a very nice size, I'm sure. And if I were you, I wouldn't shrink anymore. Be sure to tell your father when he comes home tonight. He'll be so pleased. That night, Treehorn was watching TV. As he reached over to change channels, he noticed that his hand was bright green. He looked in the mirror that was hanging over the television set. His face was green. His ears were green. His hair was green. He was green all over. I don't think I'll tell anyone. If I don't say anything, they won't notice. Do turn the volume down a little, dear. Your father and I are having the Smmedleyies over to play bridge. Do comb your hair before they come, won't you, dear? [Music] [Music] That was great. Um, yeah, Edgar Ed, uh, Edward Gory, uh, illustrations. Um, I'm very confused about it's a a Tim's television production, but everybody's American and they said water burbler, which is a British term for a water fountain. So, I don't know. I don't know. But this is what I do know. It was awesome. And uh that could be a feature film very easily. Uh if Jumanji could become a feature film franchise, uh Shrinking a Tree Horn definitely could. All right. Uh now we're just going to watch a bunch of serial commercials. Uh these are from my collection or from the Duke Aduse collection. Um here we go. Why so? Enjoy your post great nut slate. [Music] [Applause] [Music] So, um yeah. Uh that was a piece that I did uh after digitizing uh what turned out to be 10,000 TV commercials. Um it does something to your brain when you do hours and hours of honeycomb commercials. Something something happens chemically in your brain. Uh one I bought honeycomb cereal. I bought a lot of the serials that we digitized for this project. And um then I there was a a a short film festival uh in Houston, Texas. So I decided to take a honeycomb commercial that you saw and slow it down and uh also kind of ghost it a little bit. use some uh um After Effects filters and then also audio uh thing called pulse stretch which allowed me to kind of create that weird atmospheric soundtrack that was pitched right but it was also just weird and haunting. Uh and so that's where enlarged to show detail came from. Um, and I did a crazier version of that, uh, that was even longer called Christmas Creep that I showed on the 1,000th episode, which is basically I took a 5-second snippet from uh, a 7-Eleven commercial for Christmas Trees and made it 10 minutes long. Um, and it was even more insane. So um yeah anyways that's what happens my brain I that's how I came to this was doing experimental video and started collecting films and so every once in a while I have to dabble much to everybody's chagrin. Thanks for uh watching. Uh I don't know if you noticed I uh used some AI to animate uh the fight between Rodney from Super Goop and Wondercat. Um, it didn't do a very good job, but it was free. Um, I am concerned about the future of AV Geeks if we can uh generate content like that. So, anyways, so in the meantime, we're just going to watch all the films we can and then hope that it all plays out okay. Um, if you like what you saw or at least were intrigued by what you saw, hit the thumbs up, hit the like button. You can also donate via the super thanks button. Uh, go to ko-fi.com/avgeeks or patreon.comavgeeks. Um, you can go to ageeks.com. We have more videos to watch there and DVDs. Uh, and also, uh, we're beginning to put our heads together about a shelfathon, Age Geeks Shelfathon, and would be interested to see how you would like to participate. Would you be interested in actually helping us move films into the archive from the storage units? Would you be interested in helping support our financial efforts to move those things in like renting trucks and etc.? Uh, let me know. Um, and you can write me at skipavgeeks.com. Also, just love to hear from you. I've gotten some great suggestions so far. So, um, everybody have a great weekend and we'll be back on Monday. Everybody take care.
