what is constantly irritating my uh sinuses in my eyes uh making all the cars green it's it's disgusting um anyways we watch old 16 mimer films here and that was a film from the Mogul Brothers collection and it was an early herie film uh herie of course was the company uh that was acquired by encyclopedia branica and it was uh created by Western Electric and uh they were working on a sound um scheme uh in theaters and I think that this was a new thing they were trying with educational films it's interesting yeah there is no James Burl in this um this is I guess they were still trying to Market marketing 16 there weren't a lot of sound 16 projectors early on so there you go um so much to understand but do you understand your emotions let's find out enjoy [Music] how is it coming oh be for your biology classwork this will help sit down notice your own emotional reactions to what you've just experienced what did you feel what did you do how about you Jean I've got to catch my breath differently Jean's reaction you might call one of fear I'll say Jean Drew away from the box that's what you generally do when you afraid of something on the other hand Warren's reaction you might call rage he was ready for a fight what happened to me what did I do you laughed you were pleased you drew closer to the Box you liked it psychologically we classify that sort of response with what we call the basic emotion of love and so we have examples of each of the three basic emotions fear rage and love why did we act that way I didn't want to be afraid our emotional reactions are involuntary pretty much automatic well if that's the case then why weren't all same Well jean when we're born emotional reactions are pretty much the same in everyone but as we grow older each of us develops his own individual set of response patterns why is that Mr Brant conditioning what's conditioning come over here did you ever see a mouse that acted as if he were afraid of cheese afraid of cheese sounds impossible doesn't it but watch this that's the strangest thing I've ever seen is that the result of conditioning Mr Brent how did you do that well we began several months ago with just a mouse one that likeed cheese when it was confronted with a piece of cheese it responded by going toward it but when the mouse was given a mild electric shock as it approached the cheese it responded by running back after this procedure was repeated for some time the mouse began to asso shot and because he was afraid of the shock the mouse was conditioned to be afraid of cheese now he responds to cheese as he would ordinarily respond to an electric Shar that's what we call conditioning we hitch up a stimulus the cheese with a new response must be pretty hard on the mouse but it doesn't happen to people that way does it let's find out come over here Warren hold your hand out like this that's right now just try to hold it steady don't let your hand move just hold it steady but you're pushing it down just hold it steady steady steady hey it went up that's a case of simple conditioning not involving emotions this time but still conditioning is that the reason that Jean scares so easily well she's afraid of mice oh very possibly conditioning is the reason while we're very young the actions and attitudes of our parents and brothers and sisters condition us to a great many emotional responses we all have them of course most of our conditioning is much more complex than the sort we've shown so far we often become conditioned to react emotionally to words or ideas words huh I can't believe that you can't well remember emotional behavior is largely involuntary here come over here and take a look at this model of the brain this is the front of it emotions are centered in the lower part of the brain the thalamus the thalamus is not consciously controlled when your emotions are stimulated a reaction indirectly affecting the thalamus can produce changes in you and your body for example you all three reacted to the Jack in the Box your facial expressions and actions changed and that was what without any conscious effort or control wasn't it that's right well in the same way your reactions can produce involuntary changes within your body for example these glands May produce tears that's common in emotional responses other glands such as the adrenals and the liver work harder sweat glands in your skin produce perspiration your stomach slows down its digestive action your heartbeat changes sometimes faster or sometimes slower and your breathing changes these and many other changes Es are part of emotional responses and we can detect some of these changes to measure emotional responses measure them yes this device called a polygraph measures variations in breathing and heartbeat and so indicates emotional responses Larry you didn't think you would react do you want to try it sure isn't this something like a lie detector it's been called that but actually it measures and Records all kinds of emotional responses this or Bellows which measures your respiration or breathing now if you roll up your sleeve Larry we'll put this armband on your arm and this will record your pulse or heartbeat you've probably seen one of these in a doctor's office haven't you Larry yes sir now if Larry makes an emotional response to anything I mention you notice a change on this record oh this won't hurt Larry will it no indeed just just relax Larry this won't hurt a bit as this won't hurt a bit you sound just like my dentist I'll turn it on notice how regular Larry's breathing is now and his pulse as the pens gradually fill in the grass mhm Larry responds to the word Phil that's interesting and Larry has a dentist on his mind this is just a hunch but perhaps if we probe deeply there's another word probe mhm well I think I can guess several words that will arouse an emotional response in Larry tooth a yes that's another I'm responding just to words why well perhaps you can give us the answer to that one Larry well I have been seeing the dentist lately I had a bad tooth aha you're afraid of something too words aren't you I guess so how did that happen well come on over here to the Blackboard maybe if I draw a diagram of the process of conditioning it will help you S1 the first stimulus stands for the dentist he's a good fellow Larry's normal reaction to him R1 is curiosity and interest but the dentist had to drill that's stimulus too and in this case pain response number two the normal response to pain is a desire to get away a type of fear response each time Larry went to the dentist it was something like The Mouse and the cheese the dentist stimulus became associated with the response of pain and fear until Larry is conditioned to react to even words about the dentist with a pain fear response this conditioning May wear off after a while or it may not emotional disturbances May ruin your appetite make you nervous even upset your stomach why it's like running away from cheese I can see where conditioning can be pretty unhealthy that's true Jean but don't forget that conditioning can also be very useful it's a good idea to be conditioned to stop whenever you see a red traffic light well then we want to get rid of unhealthy conditioning I don't want to be a scaredy cat all my life that's right you want to grow into a mature balanced person that's a matter of conditioning too condition yourselves to make more mature responses now let's review a bit we have certain basic emotions which are controlled subconsciously they are modified and changed by a process called conditioning Now by understanding conditioning and using it we can more more easily achieve emotional maturity let's remember what happened with the Jack in the Box each of you made a different response but all your responses were a little immature mature persons respond in a more balanced manner that is their responses include a little of each of the basic emotions enough fear for protection a little anger or rage at being made foolish a spark of the love response that is interest curiosity pleasure a balance you see and we all want to become more mature emotionally don't we I sure do before we go Mr Brent may I keep this graft yes of course I'm beginning to see now how important it is to understand your emotions [Music] than well that was it this is uh uh printing platin press Make Ready enjoy [Music] making ready the press and the form to be printed is the most important operation of the pressmen the process consists of adjusting the impression so that all parts of the form will be printed with a firm even pressure the principles of Make Ready are similar for all types of printing presses the open platin the automatic platin the flat bed and the vertical cylinder press bill has a question about how to begin make ready for the title page of his booklet he summons his instructor who will demonstrate the operation remove the form from The Galley and place it on the Stone Place the form slightly above Center in the Chase and remove the string place the furniture around the form to fill in the area between the form and the chase space is left at the top and right so that coins may be inserted coins are the metal devices which exert pressure on the form and hold it securely in the chase place reglets on both sides of each coin to protect the furniture be sure that all type is on its feet and that the printing surfaces are even tighten the coins slightly and plain the form exert additional pressure on the coins so that the type cannot move Reus is necessary if the type is loose in the form important parts of any platin press include the ink dis platin grippers top and bottom Bales Ink Rollers and top and bottom leveling screws packing is held on the platin by the Bales save the gauge pins for the next job each job requires new make ready and packing which must be inserted to adjust the impression and provide an even amount of pressure over the entire printing surface corners of the new packing are cut off to avoid binding when clamped by the Bales and to provide a tight packing and draw sheet lay the packing which consists of one sheet of ton paper and three sheets of bookstock over a sharp edge and crease along the edge to make an even fold place the crease at the bottom of the platin and close the bottom bail insert the Press board under the packing be sure that the ton is drum head tight close the top bail move the grippers out to the extreme edges of the platin to prevent their smashing type when the Press is closed ink the Press before seating the form in position place a dab of ink about the size of a pencil eraser on the lower left hand side of the ink dis disc distribute the ink evenly over the disc and rollers place the form in the Press use care to avoid striking the type base coins should usually be at the top and right pull an impression on the draw sheet this impression is necessary so that the gauge pins can be positioned to hold the stock in correct relationship to the form extreme care used in aligning the margins will save the Pressman time and eliminate many printing problems draw a line on the ton to indicate where the gauge pins are to be placed clean off the ink from the tempin to avoid offset on the stock the side gauge pin should be about 1/3 the distance from the bottom of the sheet insert the point of each gauge pin through the tempin paper about 3/16 of an inch beyond the pencil line be sure to bring the point up through the paper about 3/8 of an inch from the first insertion now the pin will stay in alignment using animation let's see how the gauge pin should be inserted in the tempin sheet in order to be positioned correctly pull an impression on a sheet of stock check the alignment with a line gauge readjust the gauge pins if necessary and set them by tapping lightly with a press wrench the first impression may be too heavy or too light in some areas Make Ready is necessary Neary to complete adjustment of the impression packing May either be added or removed stab through the stock into the packing stab marks provide accurate register points to align the Make Ready sheet in the packing without moving the sheet pull an impression indicate the Make Ready areas by circling the light spots apply a small amount of paste to the back of the hand so it will be readily available apply a thin coating of paste alongside the circled area avoid placing paste directly on the printed impression lay tissue over the paste and smooth down cut away the excess tissue it may be necessary to build up the light impression areas with two or three layers of tissue after Make Ready has been completed place the Make Ready sheet under the draw sheet and align with stab marks the Make Ready sheet is held in position by pasting it to a sheet of packing remove a sheet of packing to compensate for for the addition of the Make Ready sheet move the grippers to hold the sheet making sure that they clear the form and the gauge pins after this is done any number of sheets may be run to review remove all of the old packing be sure to save the gauge pins recover the plattin with new packing to avoid smashing the form move the grippers to the extreme edges of the press distribute the ink evenly over the ink dis and rollers before inserting the form position the gauge pins accurately when stabbing position the sheet carefully to the gauge pins do not let the sheet move build up the lighting impression areas by carefully pasting tissue to the Make Ready sheet adjust the grippers to hold the stock securely on the platin be sure that the grippers clear the form and the gauge pins with Make Ready finished and the adjustments made the job is ready to be run [Applause] [Music] I don't understand why does it cost $200 to make uh 150 wedding announcements um that is why because what an incredible pain in the butt that is um I never had a platinum press I had two offset presses and this is something that I was going to a State Surplus and buying presses cuz I was doing Zen and my eventual thought was I was going to offset print Zen and I ended up realizing that it was so much work and the chemicals were horrible um and Incredibly stinky it would stink up the house so I ended up just going with a photocopier uh but uh so I learned a lot about printing presses and took some classes in college on Graphics technology and so yeah what a pain in the butt that is um and what may I ask is a dear little cupcake like you doing with nasty old school books my dear child we haven't had school or books in ages no school really why don't you get rid of that school book you can drop them in here it'll get all bured up in there well of course it will dear child and so it should books tamper with man's basic natural ignorance now what could be worse than that but I can't bu this book it's a certain amount uh or the church itself has a fund that goes to missionary work etc etc etc so there you go um but it's just I mean with the dubbed stuff and the all the characters I was like this is an exploitation film and certainly uh old radio has pointed out the Estus perkle Ron orand uh there's uh three films that were probably more than that actually I I think I I got a box set recently uh but if the footman taru is all about um Christian persecution under the hands of Communists and it is was the gorest Christian film I've ever seen until until Passion of Christ came out um it's still pretty gory it's over the top but uh there you go that's what that film was for and um actually I posted it online and somebody from Madagascar like reached out and said oh this is important film because it was like this this Madagascar production blah blah blah um anyways there you go uh enjoy sorry but not really um I'm going to be traveling the next two days uh I'm going to be going to
