e e e for for for for for for for for for is for hello everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and don't talk about staplers um so April fools uh that's what yesterday's show was was stapler geek um a those indeed are all my staplers except for the ones that were Katrina's uh and all those staplers are ones that I've used over the years for different projects so um this is all from a power I went to a retreat with a bunch of old friends of mine and we had a PowerPoint party where we all did presentations about things based on our interests or whatever and they were all uh pretty great one was somebody did return to Salem's Lot they wrote WR about that somebody uh wrote about their bathtub routine uh and how they use that is kind of a meditation thing um somebody wrote about one of the smallest Islands uh that is inhabited uh it was somebody wrote about back gammon's popularity in the early 20th century um and of course I did about staplers uh anyways thanks for watching that and thanks for your uh kind donations for what I I rewatched some of it uh last night and oh boy that guy but uh I should say that um old radios who's one of our commenters uh uh basically used AI as uh he is want to do and uh created this uh newspaper thing with a doppelganger of me uh which kind of creeps me out a little bit um but behind uh that doppelganger of me is a bunch of staplers um so kudos for that for making me go uh but anyways we're here to watch 16 millimeter films that's what we do I have a scanner behind me scanner behind me somewhere right there uh uh and we scan our 16mm film collection and we show them to you and what I really want to know is must we have all this noise [Music] s [Applause] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] W go [Music] [Music] [Music] pick up all the and the C the sweetheart a rock a lightly we really got to rock a lightly deep deep down where [Applause] [Music] until you have been quiet as long as you've been noisy [Music] [Music] where [Applause] [Music] [Music] are you telling me to get out of your way I'm asking you mister well I'm not asking you get out of his way will someone please get the telephone and what do you got to back you up B bone [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you [Music] [Music] w situ I make my best in the H of I know it's tra you love to make our sleep la [Music] [Music] sh hey Rie for so that's interesting that's the Gordon kof Productions and I have several films by that company and the flas or flas or I don't know how you pronounce the last name it's a husband and wife team they did some of the more notorious films in my collection like the day I died um all my tomorrows the the girl takes orbits and then a bunch of wine and then goes into a coma um you know really phenomenal very triggering traumatic stuff so and they also did a really great uh VD film too um which has a great song okay um let's watch clay in action not clay the person though [Music] the sculpture is ready to begin his work different types of sculpture require different types of armatures to hold the clay any sturdy upright on a heavy BAS will serve for modeling a porket the cross pieces keep the clay from slipping of the various types of plastic materials available the sculptor has chosen water clay handfuls of clay are shaped into long narrow strips and packed over and under the cross pieces of the Armature it is advisable to use slightly drier clay for the first few strips since the center of the head must support the weight of the outer mass and therefore must remain firm with a wooden Mallet the clay is packed and shaped at the same time the strips are applied in such a way that they follow the lines and curves of the masses of the head and neck the sculpture has completed a preliminary three-dimensional structure consisting of skull face and neck upon which all the later work will be done any additional masses such as the hair in this case are now applied to the basic head the hair strips are made to follow as much as possible the natural direction of hair growth the main measurements of the model's head and neck will now be taken and marked on the clay with wooden calipers the measurement from cheek to cheek is taken and transferred to the clay the length of the face from hairline to Chin is measured meed with the calipers and in the same way transferred to the clay similarly other essential measurements are made the height of the forehead the length of the face from brows to Chin the length of the nose the distance from nose to Chin the width of the mouth the width of the base of the nose the width of the neck the depth of the skull at the forehead these and many other measurements are taken and cut into the clay the basic head has been marked with all the essential measurements of the model along the IND ated measurements the clay is carved into flat surfaces or planes which correspond in a general way with the features of the model the impatient beginner often wants to Omit this important operation and go directly to the modeling of the forms but he will learn that cutting the planes leads him to a more careful study of the model helps him to keep the parts in proper relation to the whole and gives him greater control over his work the large primary planes have been carved out and will now be divided into smaller planes so that flat surfaces are gradually changed to Curves pieces of clay will be added in some instances as in the case of the eyes larger forms will have to be cut down working with planes is like building with blocks block is built upon block until a solid well organized structure is achieved slowly lips chin nose and cheeks emerge in more natural rounded form both large and small forms have now been produced but the ples do not yet flow smoothly into one another the thumb is the sculptor's oldest and best tool with it he Blends the planes smoothly together by removing the edges where they join the shapes and forms produced in previous operations are made to flow continuously from surface to surface during this blending of the forms the controlled pressure of the thumb works out in still greater detail The Contours of face skull and neck each feature keeps its independent form but at the same time relates itself to the whole head as he works the sculpture moves quickly from part to part keeping each at the same level of completion the sculptor never forgets that he is making a unified portrait even though at any particular moment he is able to work on only one part frequent wetting of the thumb helps it to move more easily over the clay by preventing clay particles from sticking to it so far the artist has been looking at the model as at any subject of similar appearance every model however possesses unique individual characteristics it is for these that the sculptor now looks this face is classical or Madonna like being oval and rather wide at the cheekbones the lips are somewhat full and the nose moderately strong and turned up slightly in its length the truly expressive work of the sculptor begins now as he transfers to the clay his personal interpretation of the character of the model artists will interpret the same model differently depending upon the kind and degree of sensitivity they possess the sculptor brings out through slight emphasis those features of the model which he thinks best Express her character the lips are made more full the size of the nose is increased somewhat the oval shape of the face is emphasized the artist has completed those changes called for by his individual interpretation of the model every piece of sculpture requires its own particular type of surfacing the face of a young woman s suggests a delicate skin texture this is produced by lightly working the wet thumb over all the forms the work is now finished the result of the sculptor's efforts is not a mechanically faithful copy of the model but the fusion of her external appearance with her essential personality as it is felt and expressed by the artist the clay portrait is now ready to be cast or fired [Music] so it's it's kind of meditative to listen to that guy talk um maybe kind of Bob Rosses uh all right I'm just going to go ahead and apologize this film has rhyming in it and I think that's one of my pet peeves is rhyming is cons constant rhyming uh and this film is kind of late in the game uh this is the alphabet of weather enjoy [Music] the these letters of the alphabet will make you dry or make you wet you'll see the clouds and watch them grow you'll feel the wind and hear it Blow you'll see the sky it might be blue or dark with clouds as storms move through the Sun May shine or it may not you may be [Music] cold you may be [Music] hot so from these letters all together here comes an alphabet of weather A is for air that's everywhere you you can't know it's there animals need air and plants do too that's probably not a surprise to you but there's one special thing you might not know about it there never would be any weather without [Music] it is for balloons that help scientists know how fast and which way high winds blow they send the balloon up into the sker than birds or airplanes fly and what they find out helps them say what kind of weather is coming your [Music] way see clouds all puffy and white that hide the sun when it's shining bright but do they always look like that no just cloud and others are flat and white clouds don't always stay that way sometimes they darken and change to gray clouds are pretty passing by making pictures in the [Music] sky D is for degre measuring the temperature in the winter when there's snow that's when temperatures are low in the summer when it's hot are they low oh no they're [Music] not e is for the Earth in space it looks like such a quiet place but down there closer to the ground Weathers making L of [Music] [Music] s for fog what's a fog do you know it's just a cloud that is down too low [Music] G is for Greenhouse it's glass that's true that's why it can let the sunlight through the warms whatever is there it warms the soil and plants and air it warms each little seed and Sprout and the warmth get out our Earth's a kind of greenhouse too the air lets all the sunlight through light warms the earth below it warms the world and the things that grow it makes our world a pleasant place like a greenhouse out space H is for Hurricane a terrible storm it starts in oceans that are warm War the winds are strong the waves are high when a hurricane I is for ice when water freezes and winter chil breezes flakes of snow are bits of ice snow can make a place look nice [Music] J is for jet not the kinds that fly but a strong wind that blows high up in the sky the jet stream is air that scientists have found can change weather down on the [Music] ground K is for kites what makes them fly the wind when it comes Blowing [Music] by L is for lightning a zigzag that's followed by a thunder crash lightning is just a giant spark that lights the clouds up they're dark when you see it what you see is only electricity M is for [Music] meteorologist is that a many of them all work together to study and predict the weather will it rain will it snow a meteorologist should know and is for news sometimes you'll see news of weather on TV too much rain that floods a town tornadoes that blow houses down dries of farmers crop snow that never seems to stop very cold or very hot weather's in a [Music] lot O is for ozone in the air one of many pollutants there o hurts your lungs that's why we're warned when the ozone levels [Music] high or precipitation a long hard word that means means the same as some easy words you've heard what's precipitation rain once precipitation snow those are words you know so next time that it's raining and you're on a vacation surprise the people that you're with and say [Music] precipitation Q is for quickly what's really strange is just how quickly weather changes it may start out being a sunny day when suddenly clouds are on the way and weather that was clear and warm has quickly turned into a storm and everything is dark and then the weather starts to change again the clouds move off the sun shines through and quickly all we'll see is blue blue R is for rainbow that colorful sight that we see while it rains and the sun shines [Music] bright s is for smog that's smoke and fog the two together are not nice [Music] weather T is for tornado a whirling Cloud that twists and Spins and is terribly [Music] loud U is for umbrellas that keep you dry when rainy clouds come passing by V is for volcano that mountain there that erupts and throws ashes into the [Music] air if the ashes spread all around the world then they can change the weather that comes your way W is for the wind that blows and makes things move wherever it goes [Music] it blows across the Open Sea and where it stops well don't ask [Music] me X is for xylophone something to play when you're stuck indoors on a rainy day Y is for y'all a sailboat like other sailboats afloat a y' depends on the wind to blow and fill it sails that makes it go let's watch some yws and boats like these that sail Along on a steady Breeze Z is for zero degrees you know that temperature can go above or below as the weather changes and you know a reason one cause of the change is the change of the season the temperature gets very low when winter comes and cold winds blow there's sleet and ice and drifting snow when the temperatures zero and below and one day the temperature starts to rise the seasons change so it's no surprise it rises past zero and keeps on going and soon there's no more ice or snowing but now there's rain and a thunderstorm and soon the weather is very warm and 0° temperature is far below but you wonder just how far up it will go and all year long it's just as before the weather keeps changing and changing some more but you've seen a lot of the changes to see through all of the alphabet from A to Z we took all the letters and put them together and we've had an alphabet all about weather [Music] yeah is that the same voice as uh the wondercat series I I don't know but it left me with that same type of feeling where I'm just like what is it going on it's horrible um yeah so 1991 um you know the funny thing is I started collecting films in 1992 and they were considered obsolete uh then um video took over but here's an example of them still making stuff and we did just scan a cornet film from 1992 so you know there was this kind of transitional period where they were Distributing films that uh basically had either a film version or a video version and what you can see in some of the the 9s films is that they actually shot everything on video edited it put titles on it then they bumped it uh as a kinoscope to film uh because there was that they were trying to reach both markets um but yeah 90 91 92 is kind of late late in the game we see a significant drop off in film educational films not videos but films all right um do I want to show this to you I don't know I don't think so I want to reward you maybe um I was going to show you a a geography film but you know you guys need something not so horrible uh so I'm looking here we are programming live all right here we go um puppets enjoy it was early one Christmas morning The Magpie and all the animals in the forest were excited she sang with happiness in her heart the fox had picked out a Christmas tree and made a sign to reserve it but why hadn't he taken it inside his den yet The Magpie thought this very strange she thought I think that one is much nicer yes this one was will make a better Christmas tree the cat and the bunny were just as excited they couldn't wait for the Christmas party and all the fun that was to come Merry Christmas Mr Cat and Merry Christmas to you Mr Bunny Merry Christmas Madam Magpie Merry Christmas everything is all ready for the party except we need some more silk ribbon for the presents I have plenty come along to my house I do hope that Mr Fox hasn't forgotten about our tree the fox hadn't forgotten at all Christmas was his favorite holiday this year the Christmas party would be at his house he had been cooking and baking and decorating for days because he wanted everything to be just right especially the tree it had to be fresh and strong that's why he had waited until Christmas morning to get his tree now what's this he wondered I had picked out a tree near here I had even reserved it with my sign there's my sign is that the tree I picked out aha Footprints and they look like Madam magpies well it's Christmas if that's the tree she likes that's the tree we shall have he would dig it up by the would plant it again after the [Music] party but before the fox began to dig he looked at the tree next to something he liked about this one he couldn't explain why but somehow he knew it would be the perfect Christmas tree no matter what the magpie thought so very carefully he dug around the roots of the tree he dug through the snow and the hard frozen ground but suddenly he stopped he thought he heard a strange noise there underneath the tree was a little chipmunk hey who's that waking me up who are you uh what are you doing here sleeping I spend the winter under the ground in a nice cozy hole but it doesn't look like spring I'm sorry I woke you little friend I just wanted to dig out this tree for our Christmas party Christmas the little chipmunk who had always slept through the winter didn't know anything about Christmas he had never even seen snow all he knew was that he had been awakened out of a deep winter sleep and he was hungry the fox tried to explain how wonderful Christmas was and why it was his favorite holiday but as the Chipmunk chewed on a frozen Acorn all he could think about was how cold and hungry he was he needed to find some food the fox felt bad that he had destroyed the Chipmunk winter home and when he saw the hungry chipmunk frantically searching through the snow for any bit of food he could find he said wait I've got plenty of food in My Den why don't you come home with me could I asked the Chipmunk yes come on I'll show you the meaning of Christmas The Magpie tried to call the fox she chirped with excitement and couldn't wait for the party that night she thought the fox might need some help getting ready but no one answered the fox and the Chipmunk were just returning as the fox ran to answer the phone the Chipmunks sniffed delicious smells hello hello oh well no one there the Chipmunk couldn't believe his eyes never had he seen such a delicious looking table of food the fox said he had been working very hard preparing for the party now I know how hungry you are my little friend and you can have a little cake now and then all you want tonight at 7:00 when the Party begins but the hungry little chipmunk couldn't stop up with one little [Music] cake oh no thought the fox he doesn't realize this food is for the party a little chipmunk little chipmunk oh no oh not that oh don't touch that don't don't oh no the Chipmunk was ruining everything the fox had worked so hard to prepair there would never be time to clean up the mess and make more food before the party and the Chipmunk would not stop [Music] eating delicious now I see why you like Christmas so much boy there's much more to Christmas than food said the fox there's the tree you can't eat that let's decorate it and make it pretty the fox thought that decorating the tree would keep the Chipmunk from thinking about food and the Chipmunk was happy to help now over there are the ornaments oh what kind of mints or mints I love candy oh boy they're not mints they're decorations for the tree oh I I I can't chew this is hard candy you don't eat them how about this is this Christmas candy that is not Christmas candy it is a Christmas candle it's not to eat oh it's hopeless look what you've done you've ruined everything for the party but the Chipmunk wasn't listening he decided he would wake up for Christmas every year it was much more fun than sleeping in a hole through the winter the fox wished that he could crawl into a hole instead of facing his guests meanwhile The Magpie thought that something was wrong when the badger asked her why she told him that the tree she had picked out was still in the forest and that the fox had not answered his phone aha said The Magpie look a visitor and a hungry and messy one too there through the window they spied the fox's Christmas visitor and saw the mess he had made I love Christmas he he Christmas is for me me me they realized that the food the fox had prepared was gone and there would be nothing left for the party what can we do asked the badger we can help replied The Magpie I have an idea the afternoon passed by and the Chipmunk continued to eat soon it was 7:00 oh no time for my guests to arrive the cat and the bunny could barely move the sleigh it was so full and the owl followed close behind outside the Fox's Den they waited for the mag pie in the badger the badger was dressed up like Santa Claus just as The Magpie had planned Merry Christmas Merry Christmas Santa when Santa Badger knocked at the door the fox was too embarrassed to answer so the Chipmunk let him in ho ho ho Merry Christmas hello I'm Santa Badger and you must be our Christmas visitor oh no here I am with nothing to offer for my friends very quickly the cat and the bunny unloaded the sleigh they saw that there were too many presents to fit under the tree so they took the tree outside don't worry Mr Fox Said The Magpie we all know about your hungry visitor said Santa Badger and we'll have a wonderful Christmas anyway what's this asked the Chipmunk more Christmas goodies I think not said The Magpie you've already had enough and they told the fox that they had seen what his Christmas visitor had done and they had spent the afternoon making more food for the party the Chipmunk felt bad he explained why he had been so hungry but he feared he had ruined his first Christmas that's all right little fellow come on outside look at our beautiful Christmas tree you haven't destroyed Christmas it doesn't matter how your home looks or if there isn't a lot of food it's Christmas and we're all together that's what's most important and at that moment the fox remembered why Christmas was his favorite holiday thank you Santa Badger no thank you Mr Fox H why is he thanking me and then he remembered that one of the nicest parts of Christmas is sharing the Christmas spirit just think said the owl that little chipmunk would never have known Christmas if you hadn't opened your home and your heart to him now on this his first Christmas he met all of us we became his friends and he's discovered how good Christmas can make you feel the fox felt good too his Christmas visitor had helped make this the best Christmas he ever had [Music] all so uh that was made by gdr television is that German uh I'm I'm not sure but one thing's for sure it's clly bad like it really just those last two films I'm sorry they just got under my skin um and it could be that they were made later and that's what you know I'm when films what I found is when films came out after I was the target age I I don't cut them as much slack um if they were made for me and made during the time period that I was that age they resonate and then anything early than that also resonates for different reasons but anything after I just get a little I don't know I have some issues and then of course animals celebrating Christmas drives me nuts that just whole thing is just really annoying okay um here's an update so uh here is the basement at the archive uh the cement floor has been poured and there are channels for front strains so that if any moisture gets in then it will go to some pumps and it'll be sucked away there will be dehumidifiers there will be climate control so it will be much much better space than it was excuse me so at some point maybe in May I don't know we might start moving stuff back and then we might start talking about the shelving sponsorship uh which I have put some thought into but really not enough so uh we'll talk more about that at some point but thanks for joining us today uh very much appreciate bur Al thank you for contributing uh via the super thanks button but another way to contribute is to um give us a thumbs up subscribe uh you can also support us via uh ko-fi.com avgeeks uh where we will use that to buy coffee or beer uh or more likely uh to pay off rental fees at the storage units that we have uh of which we have seven and we spend over $1,800 a month on uh storing those that's not great I'm not a fan um that money could go somewhere else and so if you contribute then you help uh also patreon.com avgeek is another way to support us but uh yeah it's great to see you we'll be back again tomorrow what is it Thursday tomorrow yeah it'll be great uh in the meantime have a great rest of your Wednesday and we'll see you soon bye
