e I the I I I that for for for hi everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show and hopefully I didn't leave you in the dark too long um kind of propagating the stream propagating the stream yeah that's that's something uh that meant something uh different in the uh early 20th century or in the 20th century um anyways uh so I have to when I create a show and I'm streaming it on YouTube I also have to then I don't have to but I put things on other uh social media so there you go more than you really want to know uh but that's what you're here for is it's always going to give you more than what you really want to know um these are after all educational films that we're watching and so um anyhow crocodiles let's talk about them enjoy [Music] the crocodile crocodiles live in hot wet places just as alligators do crocodiles look very much like alligators but all the animals we're going to see are crocodiles [Applause] [Music] crocodiles have tough skin and a powerful [Music] tail the crocodile has a long slim [Music] snout and they have strong Jaws [Music] to help them float crocodiles fill their lungs with air when crocodiles float they leave their nose eyes and ears just out of the water and when they go underwater their nose and ears close [Music] up crocodiles only live where they can lie in the hot sun all year long crocodiles eat fish and frogs birds and land animals they swallow their food in big chunks the crocodile swims by moving its tail back and forth it's very fast in water [Applause] these baboons have found some crocodile eggs like all reptiles crocodiles lay eggs and baboons like to eat them so does the monitor lizard but not all of the crocodiles eggs will be eaten baby crocodiles will hatch from some of [Music] them and once they're born they head for water [Music] the tiny crocodiles can snap their jaws and feed themselves they can paddle their feet and waggle their tails and swim [Music] but they can't protect themselves from [Applause] danger not until they're much bigger so staying near their mother is the safest way to spend the [Music] day crocodiles [Music] that's nice I think that's we might have one more of that film uh of that series uh that we'll probably watch tomorrow um pretty great all right um as you know we've been that was from cornet and we've been scanning a bunch of cornet uh for the company that owns cornet and um so here's another cornet film with a different vibe this is Puritan family of early England enjoy for [Music] to William started London from Giles fits in New England in your recent letter dear friend you asked for an account of our daily life in this Colony the day begins much as does yours in England our family Rises early as Godly folks should do my oldest son Isaac goes to the Village well for [Music] water my Good Wife begins to prepare our morning meal [Music] mercy and patience our daughters have the task of making the beds and I bring wood to the [Music] fireplace so each does the appointed task and ERS well [Music] our son Samuel is the last to rise and dress for he is still quite Young when all have gathered at table I give thanks to our God who has provided our food and who has brought us safely to these Shores that we might establish a true church purified according to the teachings of Holy Scripture A church free from the impurity of empty and vain ceremony for this reason as you well know our people are called [Music] Puritans each morning except on the Sabbath Isaac leaves for school he does well in studies of Latin less well in Greek on some mornings I go hunting and walk part of the way with [Music] Isaac at the Village well our pars divide and I go into the forest [Music] the forest is very close to our homes you must know that all of this land was Forest when we came and we clear only what ground we need need for buildings and for growing crops now as to my good wife and our daughters and their daily tasks patience our younger daughter has her lessons in arithmetic and in Reading she uses the device called called a horn book the lesson being printed on paper which is attached to a board and covered by a thin transparent sheet of horn thus she can read the lesson and yet the paper is preserved from [Music] damage our younger daughter being occupied with her lessons my wife is assisted in her morning work by our older daughter Mercy clothing is brought to a brook to be washed thus the morning is spent in useful activity by all the household Isaac also has his appointed tasks after school is dismissed I often send him to gather clams on the beach that from the sea as well as from the land we are provided with food it has been reported to me that on occasions when he thinks no one is watching Isaac sometimes stops his work to engage in the spot of skipping Stones across the water this is a matter of great concern to me since God has commanded us to work and not to be lazy or idle [Applause] yet for the most part Isaac does apply himself to his work I have given him the task of gathering the ears of corn from the plants which the Indians taught us to grow this corn which is also called maze is in the form of kernels of various colors and The Mention Of It recalls to me the events of a particular afternoon my good wife was busy in the making of soap in the usual way adding ashes of wood to boiling water to make lie and then stirring in the melted fat of an [Music] animal Isaac brought some ears of corn he had picked and my wife took some of it to cook for supper it was then that I returned from hunting having shot a turkey with me was an Indian named monopo who has proved a kind and helpful friend to [Music] us my wife showed our corn to manopo for it was he who had taught us how to plant it he said that he had brought us a different kind of corn with smaller kernels that we must cook in a special way and which would surprise [Music] we then proceeded straight way to follow meno's instructions for cooking the corn for we were curious to see what the result would be [Music] [Applause] we were indeed [Applause] surprised the colonels had burst open and become much larger and soft and white we all then tasted this popped corn and found it very good to eat [Music] monopo gave us more of this corn that we might plant it next spring once more he has been a good friend to us for which we are grateful and pray for continued peace and friendship between our [Music] people the evening of that day we spent in useful work as we do on every evening except the Sabbath my good wife was busy making candles dipping cords into aled Tallow and then removing them to cool and [Music] Harden there are many dippings and coolings before the candles are finished and the Wicks can be cut our daughter Mercy has become skillful in preparing wool for weaving she knows how to remove all sticks and such from the Wool by the process called [Music] [Music] carving and she has also learned how to spin the wall into thread [Music] and our daughter patience is learning to use the loom to weave Woolen [Music] cloth thus we are provided with most of our clothing yet as you must know we use not only cloth but also animal skins for clothing for this the Skins must be scraped clean on the evening of which I speak I was instructing my son Isaac in this skill when we were interrupted we do not expect visitors at the late hour and thus a knocking at the door caused me to be somewhat concerned for our safety but we then heard the voice of one of our good neighbors it was John pton a fisherman who had returned from a long day at Sea he had been blessed with a fine catch and was pleased to share this blessing with us after was cleaned the fish would be preserved with salt for some few days since on the tomorrow we would eat the turkey I had gotten by [Music] hunting and then since the hour had grown late we put our work aside in order to gather for the reading of Holy Scripture thanking God who has established our Colony on these shores of New England and that th our day comes to a close for your interest in these matters I am grateful and beg to remain your humble servant Giles [Music] Fitz Giles fips um maybe uh maybe this is Jes fips during Thanksgiving um uh let's see all right uh so we went from a nature film to a history film Recreation now we're going to bounce forward while bouncing back uh for a film about satellites and a specific satellite enjoy [Music] for centuries man has tried with his inadequate tools to peer into the future and predict the weather such predictions are often sketchy and inconclusive as it has been impossible to gather information from many vast areas of the Earth the meteorologist has long dreamed of looking from the outside in rather than from the inside out so he can see the clouds and weather covering the globe if he could know the paths of the Winds the distribution of temperature from the equator to the poles could literally see the clouds as they form the increased accuracy of his analysis his forecasts could take on extremely significant meaning for all mankind everybody talks about the weather but nobody is doing anything about it now somebody is doing something a start was made on the meteorological satellite program in September of 1958 when RCA showed that the satellite they had been developing for a different use could easily be modified to serve this function in April of 1959 the tyros project came under the overall direction of NASA as one of the first civilian satellite projects tyros meaning television and infrared observation satellite is more than just a dream this experimental weather satellite means that man's vision is no longer limited to looking up at the clouds gathering above him once the configuration of the electronic equipment was determined five tyros payloads were built two for test purposes and three for actual flight AS development progressed extensive tests were performed on the components as well as the entire satellite system tyros is one of the largest scientific satellite payloads launched to date in the Free World it weighs about 270 lb the Tyro satellite is stabilized in Space by a spinning motion similar to a gyroscope it is known that certain materials in a SP spinning satellite will cause drag due to the effect of the Earth's magnetic field as the satellite has to maintain a certain spin rate a test to determine the effect of magnetic drag was made so proper measures could be taken to restore the spin rate of the satellite energy from the Sun is converted to electricity by 9200 solar cells on the Satellite by using rechargeable storage batteries power is supplied to the satellite even when it is in the earth's Shadow a high performance test facility was designed to simulate a vacuum and temperature environment similar to that in which the satellite would operate a mechanical Shaker system subjected component parts as well as the entire satellite assembly to Mechanical vibrations two to three times more severe than it experienced during actual launch the shot tester is a device capable of imparting severe but controlled mechanical shocks to the equipment a test to balance the payload was performed on this machine so that the satellite would spin true the Rockets which will be used to restore the spin rate of the satellite were tested the precession damper test was utilized to prove out the ability of movable weights on curved tracks to dissipate any satellite wobble energy the eye of the satellite are two television cameras one with a wide angle and one with a narrow angle lens a series of individual pictures can be transmitted directly to tyos ground stations or the pictures can be stored on two videotape recorders in the satellite the TV transmitter command receivers and other control devices are other major units in the satellite which allow two-way commun communication between the satellite and the ground stations the radio beacons provide signals to the satellite tracking stations and double as Telemetry transmitters to report on conditions in the satellite no just what is tyros what is it expected to do the satellites Mission did not begin until it was put into orbit this was the job of the Air Force Thor rocket at the Cape Canaveral launching complex the tyros payload was mounted on top of the able third stage rocket few seconds in Man's agong Search for knowledge can compare in sheer drama with the electrifying moments between countdown and successful [Music] orbit the third stage of the Thor able rocket carries tyos into its first orbital path on separation it was then spinning at about 120 revolutions per minute but the rapid spinning of the satellite had to be reduced before the cameras could successfully take Stop Motion Pictures to do this two cables were wrapped around the outside of the satellite shell each ran all the way around with weights attached to the ends automatically these weights were released this action caused the satellite to dpin to 12 revolutions per minute within 1/2 second the pression damper device will correct any wobble that may occur in the satellite's rotation the Earth's magnetic field exerts a drag on the satellite gradually reducing the spin rate in about 30 days the spin rate slows down to around nine revolutions per minute upon command from the ground stations pairs of of diametrically opposite thumb-sized solid propellant Rocket motors are fired the Rockets spin the satellite back up to 12 revolutions per minute during the 100 minutes that the satellite completes one orbit the Earth rotates about 23° the orbit path is from about 50° north latitude to about 50° South this means that the satellite travels as far north as the great lakes and as far south as Australia but the cameras are programmed to turn on only when they are pointed toward a sun illuminated area of the northern hemisphere at 400 m out the wide angle lens will photograph an area of about 700 M square with pictures taken every 2 seconds an overlapping Panorama of all the cloud formations for a stretch of about 3500 miles is received each time the cam by recording the position of the sun as each picture is taken the satellite also returns information that permits the north Direction on the picture to be determined one of the two cameras takes more detailed cloud pictures that assess the meteorologist in his analysis as both TV cameras are taking many pictures every 24 hours a great Avalanche of information sent to the ground stations presents complex processing and interpretation problems a primary ground Station at Fort Monmouth New Jersey is backed up by stations at Princeton New Jersey and Cape canabal another primary ground station is at Cena Point Hawaii on the island of aahu the national aeronautic and space administration's minra system which runs like a fence through North and South America provides tracking information that traces the satellites orbit around the Earth the information is continually relayed to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration computation Center at Washington DC the computation Center can plot the exact path of tyros and quickly relay the programming information to the ground stations the programming equipment at the primary ground station sets up the time schedules for picture taking picture recording and transmission of the pictures to the ground at the Fort Monmouth and Hawaii receiving stations a record and both film and tape is made of all the data that tyros gathers during its sweeps around the earth the pictorial and telemetered information can also be picked up and recorded at the backup ground station at RCA Princeton New Jersey each primary ground station is capable of tracking programming and then receiving pictures and other data from the satellite they then send all this information to the NASA computer Computing Center and the US weather bureau where interpretation of all material takes place an ingenious device which will utilize enhancement techniques has been developed still pictures of cloud formations viewed on a television screen can be subjected to various changes by electronic techniques to enhance and highlight essential information which is normally obscured light or dark areas in the picture can be examined by increasing the contrast in any portion of the picture grayscale outlining is another technique by which areas exceeding a selected light level can be outlined to facilitate study of the cloud density background in the cloud pictures can be removed leaving only the outlines of selected light levels differentiation gives a feeling of depth the edges stand out and the overall configuration can be studied and now what comes next in space meteorology the tyros 2 satellite program includes subsystems to measure Earth and atmosphere radiation the measurements indicate where excesses and deficits of energy are being accumulated on Earth energy available to sustain the Motions of our atmosphere comes from the Sun by measuring accurately the distribution of the energy going into and radiating from the Earth's atmosphere the meteorologists understanding of the mechanism of the general circulation of the atmosphere will be appreciably improved the advanced meteorological satellites could give daily Global coverage even cloud pictures at night these satellites will have their cameras constantly focused on the globe a complete pictorial record of our changing weather will be revealed by polar orbiting satellites as their paths pass over the Earth and the Earth rotates within the orbit meteorological data presently is hand plotted on Maps prior to analysis A tedious and time consuming process in addition only limited information is available from remote ocean areas certainly a deeper understanding of the forces of nature will produce tremendous benefits for mankind yes someone is doing something about the weather this knowledge we hope will enable man to prepare for catastrophic storms blizzards droughts and floods and possibly to achieve some measure of control over the weather with an outside in look at our whole Earth's cloud cover we may be able to take a gigantic step forward in meteorology the economic benefits could possibly exceed the tragic losses of warfare since the beginning of time [Music] the door to space is open the mind of man can expand in areas of knowledge as vast as space itself with meteorological satellites the realization is near the rewards unlimited tyros is in orbit oh oh man I love that early Space Race footage especially one that's it's a promotional film uh to uh basically say hey this is what U RCA can bring to the Space Race and the a friend of mine uh Megan prelinger the wife partner of Rick prelinger did this amazing book uh called Another Science Fiction which they went through all these uh or she went through all these magazines that came out uh that were technical things about satellites and about space uh Aeronautics and all this stuff and it's just she found all these beautiful uh pieces of art that uh people did made to kind of picture the future or picture the concepts of the future and uh so I recommend seeking it out uh it's it's pretty great I think it's still imprint but um yeah so this is definitely one of those things and it so it's not made by NASA it was made by um RCA all right we're jumping all over the place now let's learn about Scott's new old friend enjoy that [Music] [Music] when the plant switched his mother from the first shift to the second shift life changed for Scott except for breakfast and weekends and holidays of course the whole family hardly ever had a chance to be together [Music] anymore they all tried to keep everything feeling as homey as it always been but it was different [Music] [Music] his mom took Becky to the sitter on the way to work and dad picked her up when he got off want something but from the time Scott got home from school until Dad and Becky showed up a couple of hours later there wasn't much to do I'd to go to he used to think it would be great to work on his models without a four-year-old sister pestering him but sometimes the parts wouldn't fit even when Becky wasn't there to blame it on just nothing to do come on Ronn side [Music] which is why Scott didn't always go straight home why he stopped by the park a lot of [Music] times there was an old old lady in the park all wrinkly and gray and funny looking but she never Hur anyone all she ever wanted to do was read your books if you laid them down wild now he aent see you later Scott see you see you Joe see youor I just like to keep in touch you know I hope you don't mind bye nice to see [Music] you the funny old lady was always there rain or shine [Music] but nobody wanted to get mixed up with [Music] her it's getting late Scott yeah Mom about ready for some reason it just came to Scott one morning that the old lady might be someone too poor to buy any books of her own and because that made him feel sort of sorry for her well there were some Comics he was finished with but no not Spider-Man for an old lady probably scarer so why not one of the books his mother used to read to them before she changed shifts and wasn't home at bedtime you're really going to have to scoot bye Dad bye back bye Scotty bye Scotty now you come straight home after school you hear [Music] stoping delightful just [Music] delightful oh what he sleeping or something right there easy what 29 I won't forget [Applause] 29 there was kind of an Unwritten rule that nobody paid any attention to the funny old lady so Scott didn't either but he wondered if maybe she wasn't trying to remember what page she was on sure enough there was a single gray hair something you'd hardly ever notice in a million years sticking out of his book at page 29 let try FR anyone else got one yeah I got one people do funny things sometimes things they can't explain to anyone else or even to themselves but since Scott had brought the book for the old lady to read it seemed like he ought to let her finish it so he carried it to school and back for several days until he was pretty sure she had read it all later later tomorrow tomorrow bye you know how it's fun to have a secret something you only share with one other person well it was almost like he and the old lady had a secret so one after another he let her read the children's books his parents had given to him and Becky why he never told anyone what he was doing he didn't know because it almost got him in trouble Scott yeah have you seen Cricket in Times Square Becky wants me to read it to her and we can't find it anywhere she I left it somewhere you go on I'll find [Applause] it and she had one silk ear her left ear was made out of silk and it was real soft and everybody in the whole country wanted to feel her my fault I forgot to put it back on the Shelf thanks Scotty thanks so we read the cricket on the next day was the the first time Scott ever said a word to the old lady come hurry up in a minute she was untied I couldn't bring it today my dad's reading it to my little sister but after he said something to her sometimes she got up nerve enough to say something to him come on SC I want you on my team God Walk it anymore to the library too old you Mak any sense out of that I think she's tell her she's too old to go to the library why wouldn't we care man is she weird maybe so but Scott felt like she might be explaining to him why she read their [Music] books are you okay fine I'm fine now don't you worry about me I'm fine you need can you help Miss RAR oh thank you no Lester my young friend is here maybe you could just walk along with me as far as my house it's just over there you're never supposed to go with strangers but she wasn't really a stranger was she the patrolman knew her and so did he maybe she was right they were friends [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] I don't know how to thank you it's okay I hate to ask but could you just help me off with my jacket and put it there and I'll rest and I'll be be all right I promise I thought you didn't have any books M all the time I was bringing those books I thought you didn't have none and I used to teach years ago and I wonder what the children are learning now what they like to read I'm just so pleased with your new textbooks and those stories you brought from home a child's world is so much wider now I guess just where you want your jacket mhm thank you here have a treat it's all right can you come back sometime with my arthritis I don't know how much longer I can walk to the park maybe I don't [Music] know Scott had never thought about school books opening a door to the world but whenever he he saw something new about science or social studies or somewhere far off he wondered now if the old lady would be interested in it she wasn't in the park much anymore and Scott suddenly realized he missed her when he didn't see her just like you would a real friend one day he found himself checking out all the books he could check out at one time you going to read all those yep what on a special project or what his folks probably would have had a fit but then parents most grown-ups actually don't always give children credit for having any common sense at all anyone could see that the old lady wouldn't or could a fle called his team together and rode them off so did two of the other boys to have continued beyond the prince would not have been the thing to do oh dear my eyes aren't so good either could you could you read it to me at the pond I called them to take the left Fork away from the city they halted in con con confusion they halted in confusion they rained and rode slowly back I said with all the extra practice he got reading to his friend Scott got pretty good at it and at some other subjects too that he learned more about from the library books 50 to one and I have heard that some have offered a hundred without finding takers m here Scott I'm just so pleased with your grades first thing when I got home last night I looked at them and I felt like coming in to wake you up and give you a hug he gets his brains from me I'm going be smart when I grow up you know I worried when the shift thing came up the disruption in family life I was afraid but I need have been funny just when everyone was feeling so good that's when trouble reared its head if you like to teach so much CH you still don't they won't let me said I had to retire on account of your arthritis arthritis no after your 65 some folks think you can't handle a job anymore because of your age they do mhm they said the same thing about me with a paper rout said I wasn't old enough you have to be 12 I'm bigger than shrimpy Nelson I can carry more papers than he can but just cuz I'm not 12 discrimination do you know what discrimination is discrimination is when people make up their minds about what you can do or not do for reasons that have nothing to do with your ability kids get that all the time what you call it discrimination can't ride your bike in the street too little can't go to neat s of movies too young can't walk outside the neighborhood can't spend your own money for pocket knife discrimination some of it you have to admit for your own good do you really think you can handle your bike safely in City traffic have you given them any reason to think you're not old enough yet for a pocketknife but if you can't have a pocket knife how will you ever prove you're old enough well yes and just when you've proved you're old enough suddenly you're too old [Music] discrimination how could Scott know that today was a day when his mother had had to stay home because Becky was sick oh God he's home Russell that she'd called his dad when he wasn't home right after school that they'd been calling all over where have you been do you know how worried we've been about you Scott I'm all right I tell you we know you're all right but where have you been friend's house what friend we called everybody we knew your teacher we even went down your class role if nobody knew we were going to call the police don't you trust me don't you think I can take care of myself between here and school what friend I don't remember her name oh my God you don't know her name you've been in the house of someone you don't know I know she's my friend I know she gets Lonesome a lot just like me she's really nice nice you're not old enough to know who's nice and who's a maniac I am too we'll be the judge of that momy no no look what you've done Becky's awake Scotty she's not feeling well son you don't know who's out there that your friend with everybody so upset there was nothing much Scott could do but take his father over to his friend's house more consideration than that you've had your mother half scared to death why hello Russell Miss rothar won't you come in oh yes Scotty oh yes I'm still turned out the old old lady used to be his dad's teacher the best one he ever had turned out his dad didn't think it was fair either that people couldn't do things they were good at like teach because of the rage turned out dad even apologized later for not thinking Scott was old enough to choose his own friends appreciated you I'm sorry we wouldn't have been so worried if we' known that you were one of Scotty's friends I wish you would have told us son we just want to know who they are Dad this is my friend Miss Ro car that funny old old lady oh no oh I know and I agree a person does get to be pretty funny looking all wrinkled and bent and gray never the way it turned out it seems like it's just dumb not to like people when their age is the main thing that makes them different from you home I think your mother's going to be looking for us miss rothar had known how he felt when he couldn't do things because he was too young you think we should get along I think maybe should and he knew how she felt because he'd been home alone a lot too when you get right down to it that's how friends are made by people thinking about how other people feel and that goes whether it's someone you have just met or one of your old old friends bye [Music] so I don't know if you noticed in the credits uh so one Trudy Travis uh was a she wrote a lot of the educational films for Centron and I think really kind of made Centron the educational film company with a heart um the other person in the credits was Jim Stringer the man who who did shake hands with danger who wrote the music to it so he did the music for this as well because he was working for Centron on and he's still writing music uh so if you ever uh Google Jim Stringer you might be able to catch him um in a performance or uh maybe some uh music that he wrote for advertising or whatever so um yeah what if Ruth Gordon played the role of uh the old creepy lady like so it could go two ways right it could go uh Harold and Ma or it could go uh Rosemary's Baby um either way uh you know it it would go differently than than it played out here um but yeah that was I like that it this this very gentle calm film was triggering for some of you where you were just like um but yeah like as I said in the comments um this I'm I'm closer in age to the old woman than I am to the kid so I it do have some sympathy for the potential loneliness that I might uh encounter um I I'm not lonely when you guys are around but I got to we got to start getting some younger people coming in here because at some point you guys uh not that I'm wishing you any you know harm but uh I just need I need new people I need to keep it going so that uh um you know I my wife and I don't have kids because we married late in life but we have lots of kids in our lives uh through our friends that we so we're kind of aunts and uncles but uh yeah got to have some kids so we're relevant so someone will talk to us if we're sitting on a park bench you
