e e e for for all for is hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 MIM films and I cheated that film we just saw was from National Archives it was some raw stock footage it was actually on 35 mm but it was some beautiful footage um and it was obviously a mixed bag because we have a bunch of train footage of um taking uh tanks and other military vehicles from point A to point B then you have some servicemen then you have some beautiful footage of some neon and some signage outside of uh various nightclubs and theaters beautiful stuff um yeah so I'm outside because it's nice out and it turns out that even though it's nice out I have to have an umbrella over my head uh to reduce the glare on the screen because otherwise I can't see uh and in doing so I realize it's not so warm out it's actually a little cold uh when I'm not in the direct sunlight so I'm wearing a jacket that's what we do um let's learn about beavers enjoy [Music] [Music] beavers beavers use their sharp front teeth to cut down trees and GW through branches so they can get at the tender bark that's near the Treetops and when they've eaten off all the bark they can then they use the trees and branches to build their houses and dams [Music] a beaver can chop down a small tree in a few minutes usually a whole Beaver family works together but one adult always keeps on the lookout for danger this is a pond that beavers made this is the dam that made the pond and beavers built the dam [Music] a beaver's house is called a lodge beavers build a dam across a little stream and it gets to be a big pond beavers need deep water where they live because they're water animals even though they spend some of their time eating and a little of their time scratching beers spend much of their time in the pond that's where they get the materials they need for their Dam and Lodge the materials are all [Music] around this is how the beaver does it first it finds the right place for gnawing and then it starts to gnaw [Music] and another branch is ready to be [Music] used when beavers go underwater their ears and nose close up [Music] and so all day long the Beavers keep busy dragging the branches they've cut into the [Music] water Busy Beavers swimming gnawing carrying lifting and a little bit of eating a beaver's Lodge is usually built out in the pond the entrance is underwater beavers can stay underwater for 15 minutes and keep swimming all the time what helps beavers swim well is the way their back feet are webbed just like a frog's feet the beaver uses its tail to steer it through the water like a boat uses a Rudder the beaver uses its small front feet to pack the mud and branches into the dam you can't really see what the beaver's tail looks like until it gets out of the water it looks more like a paddle than a [Music] tail beavers weave the branches into the dam and make it bigger and stronger [Music] and then the mud holds it all together beavers are pretty safe in their ponds but if it seems like there might be some danger the beaver slaps its tail on the water that's a signal to the other beavers [Music] and when the danger is gone when everything looks safe to the Beavers they can get back to their important work [Music] again beavers [Music] uh so Jack Hannah was the adviser um I don't know if yesterday's film Jack Hannah was the adviser but Jack Hannah of course would show up on the Johnny Carson show um and I would say uh about a block from here there are is a beaver family and they actively Dam up a creek and um cause problems all right um we've been scanning a bunch of films not only from cornette but also from our collection this one is fiberglass pole vault enjoy [Music] speed down the runway take off up and over the fiberglass vaulting pole has aroused excitement all over the world capturing the interest of the general public as well as that of athletes and coaches two features of the new poll are dramatic first it has brought tremendous Improvement in performance already there are scores of Walters who have beted the old world record second attention is drawn to the spectacular Bend characteristic of the fiberglass pole correctly everyone assumes that the Great Bend of the pole is related to improved performance the key to fiberglass performance does lie in the extreme bending and unbending of the pole regardless of the poll used the basic task is to convert energy of motion kinetic energy to energy of position potential energy kinetic energy is developed by the run then this energy of motion is converted to potential energy or energy of position in any case and with any type of pole the purpose of vaulting technique Remains the Same the athletes approach builds up kinetic energy additional power is obtained from a driving takeoff efficient conversion lifts the athlete a pull and push Supply additional energy the basic task Remains the Same conversion of kinetic energy to potential energy the more efficient the conversion process the better the Vault therefore if the new fiberglass pole produces higher vaults it must permit a more efficient conversion of energy from kinetic to potential form this is the process that we must examine to account for the superior performance produced by the fiberglass pole it has been suggested that the cushioning effect at takeoff is important because less energy is lost by takeoff shock this additional energy is available for conversion to height in the air in summary the conversion process becomes more efficient a rigid pole can dissipate energy against the box and jar the volter off balance takeoff Drive the effect of the fiberglass pole has been to relieve volage of the need to polish certain takeoff techniques designed to reduce shock also the ultra flexible pole permits a higher grip other things equal the higher the athlete grips the pole the higher he vaults it has been suggested that the higher grip can be accounted for as follows when the pole bends the vter gets the benefit of grip height as measured along the arc formed by the pole yet in terms of the mechanics of the pendulum he works only against the distance represented by a straight line from his hand to the end of the pole but this is not the full explanation note that most of the bend comes after takeoff the higher grip afforded by the flexible pole is the key to improve performance but fiberglass Vols can grip higher because the new pole frees them from a limiting factor when a rigid pole is used the optimum takeoff angle is at right angles to the pole even at moderate grip Heights it is impossible to meet this ideal requirement the dotted o represents the amount of deviation from Optimum takeoff the smaller the angle made by the ground and pole the greater the deviation efficiency becomes less and less as the grip is raised this angle becomes smaller and a point is reached where it becomes virtually impossible to raise the grip further the deviation becomes too great a mechanical limit is placed on grip height and hence on performance but a highly flexible pole can act more like a spring than a pendulum to the extent that we no longer have a pendulum the limiting factor is avoided there is still a limit to grip height but grip limit is now imposed by the amount of energy at the athletes disposal not by the mechanics of the pendulum the fiberglass vter stores energy in a spring and then takes it back fiberglass is most efficient whole and most efficiently return to the vter in any flexible length the greater the bend the greater the amount of energy stored in the pole energy still greater energy during the Run kinetic energy is developed the faster the run the more the energy it is this energy of motion along with that developed by a powerful takeoff drive that is stored in the pole yet the development of energy during the run and takeoff is no guarantee that this energy will be efficiently stored for example if the direction of application is directly along the axis of the pole no energy will be stored theoretically no amount of force would bend the pole under these conditions in contrast the Archer drawing as bow would represent ideal conditions for the storage of energy there is a resistance at each end of of the pole and force is applied in the center at right angles to the axis of the bow it is Impractical of course for the vault to duplicate the action of the Archer he can however by the use of his arms predispose the pole to store energy more efficiently at takeoff the arms are used to put a slight preliminary Bend in the pole the relative forces exerted by the arms are as follows the lower arm drives forward and the upper arm acts as a point of resistance though this preliminary Bend may seem slight it is highly important it permits a much more efficient storage of the volter energy spacing of the hands is important there must be enough distance between the hands to establish two distinct points of contact on the pole the force applied by the lower arm is forward it is a pushing action the upper arm pulls the the action of the arms makes the pole Bend more readily when it receives the impact of the body at take off's separation of the hands is essential if force is concentrated at only one point the preliminary Bend of the pole will actually be in the opposite direction the hands must be apart and used correctly to put a preliminary Bend in the pole though the role of the arms is important the volter must remember continuity and drive arm action only prepares the pole the Big Bend represents the energy of the run and takeoff takeoff position is very similar to that used in vaulting with a metal pole except that the takeoff foot can be closer to the vaulting box there are however important differences in takeoff action the hands are spaced to prmit a preliminary bending of the pole Drive can be forward rather than upward the run is an important as ever the greater the control speed the better the pole has no energy of its own the only energy that the pole can yield is the energy that the athlete puts into it a fast and reliable run arm action and drive energy stored in the pole an advance is still needed several strides away from takeoff the pole is started forward the advance makes it easier to shift the pole into favorable takeoff off position half of the task of fiberglass vaulting is to develop energy and to store this energy efficiently in the pole the other half of the task is to make the best use of this stored energy so that the crossbar can be cleared position is the key word position is established early and then improved efforts to obtain position must not interfere with takeoff drive only when the volter is clear of the ground does he Rock back into position all of the great fiberglass volters are highly position conscious and use various exercises and training methods to emphasize an orientation that is up rather than out only correct position on the pole can make the stored energy available for clearance a powerful drive through the takeoff the lead leg continues to swing up the flexed left leg is brought up and back orientation is up along Ong the pole patience and Poise are needed even though the pole has been unbending notice that the upper arm is still extended pull is late good clearance at better than 16 ft the Run builds kinetic energy position late pull and clearance as soon as he is clear of the ground the vter thinks of position pull is late and the turn is still later favorable position on the pole must be obtained quickly and then improved upon throughout the long unbending as the pole straightens the turn is late as the turn is completed the top arm is extended most of the great vault is report no sensation of pushing the so-called push off is a natural extension of the pull the average vter will not be immediately helped by the fiberglass pole in fact initially he will do worse yet it is natural for the ambitious and optimistic vter to want to switch to fiberglass as soon as possible there is a tendency to overlook the need to put energy in the pole during his run the average Vault usually thinks only of clearance he neglects power on takeoff without takeoff power there is not enough energy with which to work early coaching attention centers on takeoff power continuity and Alignment are stressed the coach wants the athlete to learn to put energy into the pole only then can he work on using this power the takeoff action must be continuous and Powerful the important task is to store energy in the pole position and air action must be mastered but the first step is to develop kinetic energy and continue to drive off the ground energy must be stored before it can be used in short a sound takeoff is learned before attention is turned to air action with a more powerful takeoff the bend in the pole becomes greater the degree of Bend is a valid indicator of takeoff power provided the pole is appropriate for the vault's weight as the run and takeoff are improved there is more power with which to work energy is made available for clearance as always pole vault performance depends upon how much energy the athlete can develop and and how efficiently he can utilize it in fiberglass vaulting the task is to put the energy in the pole and then make the best use of this energy to clear the crossbar the coming of the fiberglass pole has brought changes in technique new skills must be learned but achievement still goes to the athlete who is well conditioned understands his event and is willing to work hard so you definitely see some things you don't normally see which is the whole point behind uh what we do here at a Geeks is getting like a a niche uh film about a specific sporting event and then we get to see the footage of the guy bouncing upside down to kind of to exercise and to uh get to where he he positions his body uh so that it's it's uh maximizes his pole vaulting fascinating I love it all right uh here is uh something from our good friends at the Red Cross a removal from in the water enjoy removing victims from the water is an important life-saving technique but not always the most important artificial respiration may be needed and if it is it should be started as soon as possible if no flotation devices are available the victim will probably have to be brought to standing depth water before resuscitation is begun if a rigid support such as a poolside Pier or boat is close closer than shallow water The Rescuer can use it for support as he begins artificial respiration it is usually impossible even for trained Rescuers to perform mouth-to-mouth in deep water without [Music] support this victim may have a spinal injury whenever an injury of this type is even a remote possibility extreme care must be taken to avoid any twisting bending or side to side motion of the victim's head and trunk again breathing is the primary consideration and notice that since a neck injury is suspected The Rescuer is using the jaw thrust method so he does not have to tilt the head back can I have some help here please in most situations like this it will not be necessary to remove the victim from the water until an ambulance with trained Personnel arrives bring the board but if the water is very cold or if there is excessive bleeding it may be advisable to get the victim out to do this you must have a rigid back support and plenty of Heth at least three people position the board by submerging it and letting it float up under the victim if a specially made spine board is not available you can use a door SURFboard aquaplane or an ironing board once the board is in place The Rescuer at the victim's head must continue to keep the head and neck aligned with the body until bandages are in place around the head finally after the victim is securely tied to the board she may be carefully moved out of the [Music] water in situations where possible neck and back injuries have been ruled out and where the victim is breathing there are several removal techniques available to The Rescuer one is the Saddleback carry here the victim is carried just over the back of the hips this provides good weight distribution and a low center of gravity and enables even a heavy victim to be carried without strain the Saddleback is an especially useful carry for climbing steps occasionally a rescuer may have to lift a victim out of the water without assistance once at the edge of the pool or Pier the Lifesaver should place the victim's Hands On The Edge and maintain contact with them as he climbs out then he faces the victim and grabs his wrists he dips the victim's body once to get momentum then he lifts him out using his leg muscles not his back once the upper body is lowered to a prone position the legs can be swung onto the deck sometimes a tired swimmer who has been assisted to standing depth water may be able to walk with some support this simple shallow water assist is efficient and practical in these situations where there is a sloping Beach the drag is the safest and easiest method to use for a victim who can't walk The Rescuer grasps the victim under the armpits and supports the head with his forearms this technique is especially useful with a heavy victim when help is available it makes good sense to use it give me some [Music] help in this team lift two of The Rescuers join hands under the victim's shoulders and back the third rescuer supports the [Music] legs remember always that removal from the water should never be done in haste if the victim is not breathing artificial respiration should be started as soon as possible breathing always takes priority over attempts to remove a victim from the [Music] water we've heard that production music before in some other films that have nothing to do with uh swimming uh it shows up every once in a while and I'm sure YouTube will tell me what it is and why I can't monetize this uh lunch stream because of that that production music uh let's see what do we got um what time is it uh this is a uh film called the weekend because it's the weekend coming up and let's see um let's see whatever you have planned on your docket for this weekend if it plays whatever what was Harry you screamed at it I only screamed at you screaming at it oh for God's sake daris I was having a nightmare a nightmare yeah yes I was in this in this dark room and it was cobwebs in water and there was green slime oozing off the walls disgusting Harry was dark and dingy and I think there were skeletons SK skeletons yes and I was chained to this case of seum 7 crown and all of a sudden all of a sudden there came in a lunatic waving an umbrella a fiend who was it Albert Albert a fiend Yes Albert and there was blood dripping off of his hands it was terrible I don't want to talk about it anymore I'm going to sleep sleep good night what did he want what what what the fiend what did he want fend yes de the one for the umbrella that looked like Albert no no no he didn't look like Albert it was Albert yeah it was a terrible nightmare there he was spending my money like it was water oh I'm sure Albert wouldn't do a thing like that yes he did yes he did and he kept insisting that I give him a 7 Crown por and and as if that wasn't enough he wanted me to put it on the back bar too so so so what do you mean so if he had his way the whole bar would be littered with seven Crown thousands of bottles of it Millions maybe mountains of the stuff oh go to sleep how can I sleep with Albert pelting me with seven Crown popping up in my nightmares like a ghoul I'm not absolutely sure what happened there that was really really weird um that file must have some sort of corruption to it and I apologize for that um let's watch this instead uh and I will maybe next rightful wage oh me for know your honor that this man cut 30 loads of wood for s a headon offendy who is as your honor knows very rich and pays very well as he was cutting the wood I passed by and I stopped to offer him some advice my dear fellow you obviously know nothing about what you're doing in the first place your axe is not the right kind for felling a tree in the second place you're standing too close and in the third place you'd get twice the work done if you had more enthusiasm don't stand there the tree will fall on you do you think I'm so stupid I don't know which way a tree will fall now I cannot improve your AXS and I cannot correct your habits but for a reasonable fee I can add to your enthusiasm encourage you and give strength to your arm for I will cheer you on ah [Music] oh I'm exhausted look [Music] out so you see sord of Justice you know that I gave this wood cutter very material help he has just been PID for his work but refuses to give me my share for helping him and you believe that you have earned something and that you should be paid oh Seat of Wisdom I have heard you say many times that everyone should be paid according to what he produces therefore I must receive from you my just reward your honor I am the accused may I not speak in my own defense I do not think that will be necessary after hearing the facts and I trust you have told us the facts upon my life that will be sufficient of course you are right the idea of his receiving everything for merely cutting the wood while you stood by and took so much trouble every time he drove in the X it is not to be thought of there shall be Justice and you shall receive your share but your honor it was I who cut the wood what possible claim can he have because he stood there looking on hush my man you don't understand you have with you the money you receive for cutting the wood yes your honor please give it to me Justice must Prevail even as the just King has said and a man must be paid in proportion to what he has produced no more no less in all Justice as you Mahmud have produced only the sound of work so shall you receive only the sound of payment and you wood uh sorry about all the technical problems today I'm not 100% sure what's going on with that you know what's so this is what's frustrating I know that there has been some uh trash talking of Apple on the comments uh the people that make uh MacIntosh and iPhones well I have my own issues with that company uh because I have many uh Macs that have problems and I had up recently uploaded or updated the uh operating system on this laptop that I use and everything has been a little bit slower and a little bit more annoying and it's very frustrating very very frustrating because I have to pretty much quit out of everything to get things to run right so I apologize for that and I'll keep trying to diagnose and figure out a way to fix that for future screenings because I know it is disruptive
