e e e I I hello everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where I'm trying to adjust the camera there I am um welcome we watch old 16 mm films here and um that was a film strip about electronic tubes and uh what do we got we got some cornet films for you this is reading for beginners word shapes enjoy [Music] this is part of something you've seen before can you guess what it is here's another part of it do you know what it is yet does this part help you let's see all the parts together it's a chair it's shaped AP tells you that all the parts are there that you saw before the legs the back the seat but it's really seeing the shape of the whole chair that helps you know what it is and you know that the chair is now beside a table all the parts of the table give it a certain shape all you need is a quick look like this or like this and you can tell if you're seeing a chair or a table or both of them you see what was that now do you see did you recognize the words chair and table they have a certain shape too the letters give them their shape there are 26 letters in our alphabet and every letter has a shape you know what this letter is because you recognize its shape its shape comes from a small round part on the bottom and a tall straight line on the right this is a d d is a tall letter O is a small letter it has a shape you recognize too like a circle and if you recognize the shape of this letter you know it's a g it has a tail and the three letters make a word you recognize dog dog a dog has a certain shape and so does the word dog we can help you see the shape like this do you see even without the letters you can almost tell from the shape that this is the word dog see the letters give it its shape and all you need is a quick look and you recognize the word all the words you read get their shapes from their letters let's think about a dog again like the this and let's think about an elephant like this now you might not recognize the word elephant when you see it so here it is and here is dog but we're thinking about shapes now you know that different letters are in the two words but can you see another difference well the word elephant is longer than dog you see the number of letters in a word helps to give it a certain shape too shall we try a test here are two word shapes one is the shape of the word for this a helicopter and the other is the shape of the word for this a jet all right which word is helicopter the top one that's right even if you couldn't recognize the word helicopter you probably guess that it was longer than jet words that look very different like helicopter and jet and dog and elephant are easy to tell apart because they look so different but there are many words that look very much alike we're going to make some now one of them is the word pot the other is the word pet when you look at a pet and a pot it's easy to tell which is the pot and which is the pet all you need is a quick look but was that the word pet or pot you see the words pot and pet look very much alike pot has three letters and pet has three letters the two words have almost the same shapes that's because they both begin with p and they both end with t and both of their middle letters look very much alike o and E are both small round letters there's just a little difference the O is closed the E is open on one side and has a line across it it's just a little difference but it's an important one you have to be able to notice the small things that make words different if you want to recognize them correctly sometimes the Small Things Are letters that look very much alike let's see how good you are with two other words that look alike here's a girl she's going to wear something it's a did you look carefully is she going to wear a bell or a belt if you saw the little difference between an l and a t then you know that the girl is wearing a bell so when the shapes of words are alike you have to look carefully to notice the little differences in the letters let's try one more test think of going uphill and think of going downhill and think of the words uphill and downhill ready was that uphill or downhill here's the word again were you right here is downhill these parts of the two words have the same shapes you see you have to notice the differences in the parts that aren't the same to recognize the whole words but usually words aren't by themselves when you read words they're usually in sentences this is what the girl thinks she's reading the lion had a large yellow name does that really make makes sense let's look at the words the lion had a large yellow is the last word name no it's the word Maine a lion's main is the long hair that hangs down around its neck the lion had a large yellow Mane Mane do you see how much alike Maine and name look the only difference is in the different positions of the n and M you have to see the difference for the sentence to make sense now it makes sense when a sentence doesn't make sense sometimes it's because you didn't recognize a word suppose the girl thinks she's reading this the bike had two flat tries flat tries let's look at the words do you see a word the girl didn't recognize correctly right it isn't tries is it the bike had two flat tires so you see recognizing words is an important part of reading you have to see little differences was that son or soon is the next word West or vest is the next word charged or changed want another look now what about word shapes is this the shape of the word television or radio you have to notice big differences too sometimes times you notice the shape of the whole word sometimes you notice the shape of certain letters and sometimes you notice the position of certain letters in the words all these things help you recognize words with just a quick look like this did you recognize those words is this what you read then you know that this is the [Music] end I very much like that I like the tone of it I like the pace of it um just it I don't know what it is I I think it's from that time period um when I was a kid and I would have potentially seen this film so it uh it resonates very hard with me um pretty great okay what do we got um I didn't put that there yet okay so this next film is another' 70s film uh meant for young adults specifically women uh who are learning to be receptionists secretaries or in the typing pool enjoy [Laughter] Janet Wilner is a really good typist she can type from 80 to 100 words a minute easily she can keep it up all day if she has to Janet's company has asked us to take Motion Pictures of her typing part of a study to analyze position and keystroke of a good typist our cameramen have photographed a lot of excellent typus for this study we've learned a great deal about what it takes to type accurately and fast apparently Good's position at the typewriter and with the way she manages her keystroke her position is comfortable and relaxed she sits directly in front of the typewriter with her body in balance her elbows relaxed natural at the side of her body her feet both on the floor it gives her the stability to resist fatigue to some extent good typing depends on the office furniture and its adjustment the height of the chair the height of the desk proper adjustment of the furniture provides enough distance between chair and floor the back of the chair is adjusted for Comfort not so high that it interferes with movement nor so low that it leaves the upper body unsupported apparently this position helps typing speed at least I've noticed in this study the fastest typists naturally sit like this our cameras have recorded body position and hand position there may be individual variations but the hands of all good typists rest over the keyboard with wrist low and relaxed Palms don't touch the typewriter fingers are curved our study shows that's the most efficient way to operate any electric or manual typewriter and fingers are directly over the home row Keys except when other keys are [Applause] operated the investigation of keystroke movement is one of the most interesting parts of our study our camera is set for slow motion we concentrate on Janet's hands as she types later after the slow motion film has been processed we project it to analyze keystroke movement one question we've asked is what is the position of the hands and fingers during brief rest between keystrokes the answer the hands remain in alignment with the keyboard the fingers remain in typing position even when no key is being struck another question what part of the hand does the typing the answer the fingers do nearly all the work hands wrist and arms are quiet and relaxed another question what is the exact nature of the keystroke movement the answer keys are struck with the fingertips each stroke is a quick snap and the keys are quickly released we studied space bar action we wondered how a fast typus like Janet handle spacing the spacing action is done with the right thumb it moves down and in toward the Palm as the spacing stroke is made the hand is not turned and the thumb remains on or near the face bar at all times our slow motion films revealed the elements of typing and they demonstrated again that Janet Wilner is good at her job between filming sessions I observed several other reasons for her Excellence Janet keeps her hands in condition for typing with finger gymnastics I watched her pressed the fingers and thumbs of one hand between the fingers of the other hand she did this with both hands several times then I watched her type some warm-up sentences her favorite warmup covered nearly all the letters of the alphabet it provided a good workout for both hands Janet is good and yet she's only one of hundreds of good typus we've worked with over a period of time they've shown us fine points about the art of typing position and stroke they depend on the typewriter itself today most office machines are electric inside many electric typewriters a power roll constantly turns when a key is struck the turning power roll pulls the type toward the paper then quickly releases it the action is easy to see in slow motion since power does most of the work in electric typing extra finger motion is wasted electric typing is a matter of moving the finger as little as possible beyond the actual typing motion it also is a matter of being aware of the rhythm of the machine the length of time it takes for the carriage return to respond to the touch slight delay when the shift key is [Applause] operated occasionally Janet Wilner Types on a manual typewriter it is operated by pressure of the fingers acting along a system of levers when a key is struck the Striking force of the finger causes the typ bar to move toward the paper position and keystroke are the same as for the electric but because the manual machine is operated by muscle power good position and stroke can pay an added bonus in reducing fatigue no matter what kind of typewriter is used our study shows that the fastest and most accurate typist coordinate their eye and hand movement movements a good typus keeps her eyes on the copy she's not easily distracted a good typ is thinks ahead she prepositions her fingers as she strikes keys without breaks or pauses keeping the carriage constantly moving but the basis for her speed and accuracy is good position and keystroke that's true for Janet and for all of the expert typists we've photographed good typists agree that typing skills are learned through study and practice what kind of study and practice look at what some typist have done a typist who wants to improve her speed may go back to the basics she rereads her instruction book she takes a fresh look at what she's learned about position and keystroke a typus may ask a friend to check her position as she works she may practice one element of position or stroke at a time during one session she may concentrate on wrist position later on finger movement more important a typist who wants to improve her speed never stops doing typing drills drills designed to build [Applause] speed drills build accuracy [Applause] we learned in our time and motion study that good typus practice regularly and we film the results of their practice our study is a continuing one today Janet tomorrow other expert typist perhaps you we feel our work is important because there are so many typist in the business World perhaps the result of our study will help them to improve their skill that special skill which starts with two important factors position and keystroke I uh love the niche film and um this reminded me your comments about that this is the strangest adult film you've ever seen um reminds me of the whole weird uh typewriter subtext in the movie The IED lunch um it just popped in my head I won't elaborate uh if you have not seen that movie um it's good but maybe you don't want to see it I don't know um it is Pi Day and a lot of people it's because it's 3.14 um March 14th but uh this uh everybody talks about pie like the dessert pie um I'm going to show you a film and I've shown this many times uh at least twice uh my wife just dropped something and then she apologized um uh I'm going to show you uh meaning of pie so you get a sense of what p is all about um and the one thing that I in watching this film a preview of it earlier I forgot this kid's voice is so good he's like kind of on the cusp of a puberty voice so he he definitely talks like a cartoon character I love him all right here it is meeting to pie enjoy [Music] circle circle circles still not sure what pi means radius the amateur circumference where is pie fit in here I just don't get it well let's look at these notes again circles are among the most important of geometric Concepts use them in Machinery in building in art for beauty and for utility yes what else did Mr Leonard tell us in math class about circles wheels are circles and wherever we have built moving machines from wagons to automobiles we have used wheels or circles to visit a shop where tools are used is to see many circles being put to many different uses for a circle is useful and it is beautiful but how does that help me to understand pi to understand circles we must study them let's begin by getting our term straight using a compass it is easy to draw a circle what are the terms to consider well the center is the point around which the circle is described or drawn every point on that line is the same distance from the center any straight line from the circle to the center is a radius and any straight line through the center with its ends on the circle is a diameter the length of this line the circle line is the circumference and that's as far as I got before except I drew a lot more circles but what's this about pi to understand circles means to be able to measure them and compare measurements go ahead John you can do it that yard stick ought to do the job now make a point in your circle so you'll know where you began to measure just roll your circle over the measuring stick until the arrow comes around again and you have the length of the circle or the circumference it's 31 and 716 in you can measure a circle after all it isn't hard to measure the diameter directly if measuring will do it well here I go and now you should know a lot about circles maybe even some about Pi you've measured a lot of circles this sprocket wheel with a diameter 8 1/2 in long has a circumference of 26 and 58 in but still what about Pi in studying the circumferences and diameter of circles you should notice something important circle with a diameter 2 in long of the circle is more than 6 in Long a circle with longer diameter a 3 in has a longer circumference too that's just common sense of course the longer the diameter the longer the circumference let's keep going I'm getting it suppose you take the circle with diameter of 3 in you place that Circle carefully you measure that you rotate the circle until you measure the circumference and you record these measurements then you measure another Circle this circle has a diameter of 1 in you carefully prepare to measure the circumference of this circle you find the circumference and you record these measurements these are the facts which have helped teachers of mathematics to develop the meaning of Pi I think I'm beginning to understand but not quite let's think of the facts in a different way suppose we think of the two circles at the same time our small circle with a 1in diameter our large circle with a 3-in diameter we know already the circumference of each of these circles now let's compare the length of the diameter of the small circle with its circumference we can see this comparison by seeing how many diameters it takes to equal the circumference we can see that it takes three diameters and a little more to equal the circumference of the small circle what about the large Circle how many diameters will it take to equal the circumference of the large Circle once again we see it takes three diameters and a little more to equal the circumference is that true of all circles the three and a fraction diameters of any Circle equal the circumference of that Circle I should be able to answer that let's figure the ratio of those I've measured ratio of circumference to diameter my first measurement was circumference 31 and 716 C diameter 10 in 3.1 3.14 well I guess that proves something they're all so nearly the same every one of them you know that's quite a discovery the circumference is a little more than three times the diameter we usually use 3.14 as Pi H I didn't need to measure the circumference to find the circumference I could have just measured the diameter and multiplied by 3.14 and why couldn't I understand that when I read it before Pi mathematical the letter Pi denoting the ratio of the circumference of the circle to the diameter I'll bet I've read that a dozen times before and didn't know what it meant the ratio of the circumference to the diameter the value of this pi to eight decimal places is 3.1459 265 wow Pi can be written in many ways all these are symbols for pi to find the numerical value of this important ratio was one of the great problems of history from the Old Testament it is evident that the Hebrews considered the value of pi to be exactly three the ancient Egyptians apparently had some knowledge of the value of piie but it was in agrees that the value of pi was more accurately determined and from the Greek alphabet comes the name the 16th letter of the ancient Greek alphabet is still used to name the relationship of the circumference of a circle to its diameter 3.1416 sometimes used as 3 and 17 as a matter of convenience Pi that's what I discovered just now Circle a radius a diameter and pie [Music] I could speak like this the rest of the show his voice so great I love it so much all right um it is p day uh I have a i I've shown films that I have about like dessert pies um but this one I haven't shown for like four years five years and it's has nothing to do with uh pie except that the title is animation pie uh and this is a bunch of kids doing different styles of Animation it's pretty great uh I should say before we start this uh we are uh taking votes for the toet tapping tourament um we showed the C Cates yesterday and we'll and you have to be good at drawing the same picture about a whole lot of times when you're flipping a flip book it's going at about 16 or 32 real fast I put that well you don't really have to do flip books on cards you can do them on pad of paper anything that you can flip really you can do it on your math book a flip book you can do just about anytime you get bored cuz I know you always most people have a class where the teacher has to go over everything about eight times and you already know it well for the first time when you get it the rest of the seventh time she's saying it you can just go back over and make a flip book it's like having a little movie in your pocket and you can pull it out and watch it [Music] anytime 200 uh 245° no two lights 45° angle on each side of your picture so the light won't reflect back into the camera in 16 mm film you have 24 frames per second and in 8 Super Eight you have 18 frames per second and as you film it two frames each card it will make it move along the screen uh you take the thing and you put it under you click it [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh man that is can I have some water oh thank you well a flip but flip him how do you get in there anyway good ideas for animation probably come you never think of them when you're trying to think of them you think of them when you're doing something else like you could doing a math test and we'll come to [Music] you oh finally been waiting 3 years to talk and now I [Music] when you're taking it it doesn't seem to you like it could ever move boy it sure is a drag being small you never know what can happen to a little guy like me oh another Squish and run I think ants must be a minority group it's done fly delicious when our film comes back from the from the last and it's all you know fixed up and everything we look at it for the first time it really looks funny cuz you know I have scenes from from one place and you go to another when you want it over here and then we get to edit and that's fun when you um edit you can cut out things that you don't want like if somebody's hand got in the way or they somebody ran in front of the camera and you couldn't help it you can just cut those things out you know when you when you see someone else's film for the first time and they hav edit it again and then you see it again after they edit it it's weird cuz it's like magic the best part is when you finally get to see it on the screen after all that work when you see it you just can't believe you did it guess I like the best was um seeing the film's the best part it doesn't really come alive until you put it on the screen should be hey that's fun hey that's right that's good [Music] [Music] hey a banana I hope I get eat this one need
