e e e I is I hello everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and uh occasionally we bust out an old film strip um using my new relatively new film strip scanner which is hooked up to a cell phone and uh via USB anyhow um that film strip has never been shown before uh it is got no signs of use or abuse it's got a vinegar smell which means you know it just kind of sat there um yeah when you took Latin you might see this film strip um so anyway so we had a tour of Ancient Rome let's have a a tour of Hangtown courtesy of a uh wonderful Oil Company enjoy this is the story of a road and the men who traveled over it in search of gold that Thorofare ran over the high Jagged spine of these mountains The Fabulous Sierra Nevada they are the greatest single mountain range in the United States they culminate in the nation's loftiest Peak and they are cut by Gorges deeper than the Grand Canyon AR a spectacular country bright with color and rich in history for here is where the days of 49 were born this part of the world remains largely as God fashioned it the geological story here has been going on for 500 million years the rivers brought the gold within Man's Reach and here in their ancient channels flourished for a decade the greatest most feverish gold rush in all history and Nuggets like these fired the Great Migration that made the West that epic story is now reenacted by today's mountain men and women of El Dorado County they're going to travel the same road of the 49ers to Hangtown in the heart of the motherload Gold Country they're making up a caravan to retrace the Wheel tracks of a hundred years ago when the Pioneers crossed the mighty barrier to find their fortunes and to press our Frontier into California the wagon Master signals and we're off to hang town get up there we've got 68 miles to cover over the most pictures strip of US Highway 50 where Nevada touches California at state line the journey into year officially begins this road is paved with the Deeds of History though most of the landmarks are long since gone the Cobalt Waters of Lake Tahoe reflect the bright Summer Sun to make this seem a golden age too no hurry let's take our time the 49ers didn't really rush to the gold rush and they did pretty well took out $50 million a year for 10 years today's Highway follows and uses portions of the old immigrant Road some of the hardier souls cut off to ride High Trails through the scenic Uplands they'll rejoin the Caravan at a later rondevo the long climb to Echo Summit begins this stretch used to give the stage coach drivers nightmares they used to bump and Rattle and Lurch over this very pass but they carried the mail through and the bullion and the passengers over what they called the terrible Sierra today modern Highway construction has made this one of America's most scenic arteries you know this road witnessed the greatest era of horsedrawn freighting and Stage coaching ever known anywhere back in the' 60s it was choked with two continuous lines of traffic moving East and West with hardly a break between Wheels 5,000 teams of horses carried a 100,000 tons of cargo and 20,000 adventurous passengers by this spot in a single year the white man first saw this country in 1772 but for centuries before the Argonauts came Indians roam this range then came the fremonts the kit Carsons the Pathfinders fur Trappers and Scouts they all broke Trails for the wheels to follow for America to roll West our mod Horsemen wind past Echo Lake into El Dorado National Forest an old line forest ranger is their guide as they pick their way along remnants of early immigrant Trails still to be found over the crests of this Wonderland today scenery like this is bringing a new boom to El Dorado County even though the riches of gold mining are now but a memory geologists say there's still plenty of gold in those mountains they say only one/ tenth of it has been located in mine snow brings water to the valleys and draws Sportsmen to the sier ski runs snow helped to make tourist trade the number two industry second only to Lumber well our Trail Riders have reached the ridge of Mount Ralston and are touching 10,000 ft kid Carson himself could do no an early map designated this Asian Valley and Devil's Peak reflect the feeling with which the Pioneers regarded this [Music] region some authorities mention Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok as famous way farers who travel this route and from their writings we know that Mark Twain Bret Hart and Horus gy were among those who followed the sage advice Go West Young man go west [Music] the bells of the 10 mule jerk line Team Echo the journeys of the host of Forgotten 49ers who died with that Golden Age stirring Deeds of illustrious men and women hang in the air as Majestic in their own way as the remarkable sculpture and stone left by the glaciers Lover's leap Rises a sheer 1,000 ft looking down from the peak there's our Caravan way down there they've just passed Horsetail Falls and are approaching famous old strawberry house where weary Travelers teamsters and stagers paused along the original Emigrant Trail for a well- earned [Music] rest we're jogging along in fine Style with no worries until Shades of Black bar King of the highw women this is a stage coach hold up at the exact spot on bullan Ben where it actually happened 88 years ago this boy means business throw down that Wells Fargo treasure I would wouldn't you I wouldn't do that Dangerous Dan won't like it give them what they want we ain't got a chance the history book says so well that's one shipment that didn't get through but it's interesting to know that that most of the bandits were killed or captured so you see the kind of goings on that gave Hangtown its name and this is the Bell that called the Vigilantes to perform Swift and sure Frontier Justice an air of antiquity hangs over the town now called plaster many of the relics of those heroic days still stand some over a century old nearby at suter's Mill James Marshall discovered gold in 1848 changing the whole course of the country's history his hand points to the exact spot our Caravan is going to get a real Western welcome they finally made it a triumphal entry into Old Hangtown you can't blame people for coming to Hangtown when you remember that some of the boys back Yonder took $5 million in gold out of one hole just 12 ft long you can't call that dry d [Music] rip roren hang town is really quite civilized now but there's still life left in the old town or at any rate this descendant of the Rough and Tumble Old-Timers will be glad to prove it if you want to change places with him who said the chaos and violence of the old days are gone forever just like old times isn't it in mining days the old boys did some high grading but today the young boys do some high riding till they come down that is that right Dad something tells us this boy may stay on for the required 10 seconds yep we knew it all all the time the people of plaz rville always did like a winner The Wagon Train Caravan has reached its Rainbow's End Hangtown it too will go down in history beside its counterpart of a century ago the smartest entries in the best Trail Riders are awarded trophies in Gold the very medal that spurred the westward migration the Tre of the modern gold Seekers ends in glory just like the one 100 years ago this pictorial record of the birth of the West has been brought to you by the Standard Oil Company of [Music] California it's interesting to me uh that I have many films that are and this is from my collection from National AR archives from prelinger collection other places of these kind of post World War II visits to different parts of the United States and they're almost all sponsored by oil companies um it's almost like all the films that talk about nutrition from the 20s up to the '90s uh were brought to us by the dairy Association um it's it's really fascinating to me that like that's what they they invested their money in it's like we're going to tell the story of geography and what's great about this country um through the lens of whatever product we are espousing uh so I don't think there was any direct petroleum uh things in there but it was still kind of interesting to see the Standard Oil mention um this is a cornet film about World War I or postor War I and what went wrong enjoy these four men have been called the peacemakers of World War I Orlando of Italy Floyd George of Britain clemo of France Wilson of the United States I've read things like we won the war but lost the peace how did we lose the peace I'm not [Music] sure making war is hard but it seems that uh making peace is even harder when war is end people stop worrying they assume that peacemaking is easy automatic we discovered it isn't what was the end of World War I like do you remember oh yes oh yes I remember it well I was just 18 then in 1918 I remember the headlines and the celebrations we went wild now we thought no more Wars ever overseas in London the same High Hopes And at Paris too but the Armistice didn't bring joy to everyone for the losers the shocking realization that they had been beaten no joy no cheers instead a time of troubles in Germany riots Revolution we should have remembered this side of the piece but we didn't we were too busy at home cheering our Victory our wartime President woodro Wilson was at the height of his popularity many Americans agreed with the reasonable liberal ideas he expressed so well he put into precise clear language what we vaguely felt the peace must be fair not harsh that if Nations worked honestly together lasting peace was possible his famous program of 14 points appealed to a war weary world the points covered four main ideas no secret diplomacy limitation of national armaments self-determination for all national groups establishment of a League of Nations to preserve Peace by arbitration these points were foremost among the proposals that Wilson took to Europe in December 1918 the visit to France attracted World attention we were proud of our president and of our country emerging as a leader in international Affairs what did the Europeans think of President Wilson Oh mostly they welcomed him with open arms Paris gave him a tremendous reception but why they didn't know him that well did they no but perhaps to them he represented a fresh start a new hope and yet as we learned later Wilson's Triumph was to end in disappointment Wilson was only one of the delegates from 32 Nations who assembled in Paris in Jan anuary 1919 to write the peace treaty the place was the Palace of Versa just outside of Paris in this same Palace 48 years earlier the beaten French had seen the German Empire proclaimed after the Franco Prussian War now the world would watch the Allies make a new peace with a vanquished Germany leading their delegations were the so-called big three of the peace conference President Wilson of the United States premier clemo of France and Premier Lloyd George of England the big three together with Premier Orlando of Italy represented the Allied powers to his surprise Wilson the idealist found that shrewd Premier Clemens so was opposed to Wilson's ideas of the peace twice clemo had seen his beloved France invaded by Germans he honestly believed that revenge on Germany was just David L George was usually a liberal but he couldn't support those of Wilson's 14 points that conflicted with British policy thus instead of Harmony Wilson found that the big three were not in agreement after months of discussion and speechmaking during which 58 committees worked out the lengthy treaty it was signed on June 28th 1919 in the historic Hall of Mirrors at Versailles many of the peace aims that Wilson had hoped for were thwarted Clemens so also had to compromise his harsh measures toward Germany but the treaty containing 880,000 words had been completed contrary to International usage the Germans had not been consulted during the negotiation so the peace made at vers was in effect a dictated piece yet even though the Allies felt they had made compromises the piece was written and people celebrated the historic occasion but the somber faces of the German delegates reflected their disappointment the treaty handed to them wasn't the one they had expected from Wilson's widely publicized 14 points they were angered and dismayed by the harsh terms they were to take back to Germany by signing the treaty Germany automatically admitted responsibility for World War I Germany must make reparations of $30 billion Germany must surrender her Naval forces she must never build submarines nor build military aircraft and artillery Germany lost territory too particularly in Africa German colonies were placed under alied mandate there were other changes the map of Europe was changed by treaties following World War I Empires were dissolved including the German Empire many new nations including Finland Estonia latva Lithuania Poland Czechoslovakia Hungary and Yugoslavia were created with the treaty written Wilson began the return trip to America to many Americans and Europeans Wilson was still a hero but of his famous 14 points only the League of Nations seemed possible to achieve Wilson was returning home to fight for it at first he was hailed with enthusiasm he returned to Hero not knowing that within a few months his popularity would fade Americans rejected most of his ideas for buing the peace the United States did not join the League of Nations as he had urged as I look back now I think everybody felt a lasting peace was a worthwhile goal but we just didn't know how to achieve it most of us wanted to return to our everyday lives again the versai treaty did cause trouble later didn't it perhaps it did help to keep some hatreds alive it's hard to tell my brother Frank told me about the postwar Germany he saw there were shortages of fuel there were shortages of food and out of the disruption of the economy came disastrous inflation the German Mark became almost worthless the future seemed hopeless unemployment poverty starvation were commonplace National boundaries Changed by the peace treaties upset populations creating new minority groups and displaced persons certain Statesmen among them Charles G Daws of America proposed relief loans for Germany but this did not solve all the problems the defeated peoples were ready to follow new leaders out of The Strife torn post-war years came a new generation of leaders who proposed totalitarian methods to solve National problems the awful lessons of World War I were being forgotten we had failed to write a lasting piece what did we do wrong it's hard to say even now exactly what was done wrong but somehow after World War I the seeds of another and even greater War had been planted you mean World War II yes when you study World War II I think you'll understand that conflict a little better in the light of what you've learned about World War [Music] I the old the Oldtimer say sits there and entertains questions from the new generation um it's it's an interesting way to kind of talk about uh history um you know in cornet and encyclopedia branica were both like how do we like frame this in a way that's interesting um and sometimes they're successful sometimes not so much okay um here's another cornet film for you uh this is reading Improvement word recognition skills enjoy [Music] [Music] your ability to read depends on many skills most basic of all is the skill of word recognition the better you are at recognizing words the better a reader you can be Tom's word recognition skills help make him a good reader he can recognize a word such as this one by the way it looks by the way it is used or by the way it sounds right Ry rivalry rivalry Tom is able to recognize most of the words he knows without having to look them up in a dictionary can you let's see how you can develop your word recognition skills look at this word you've probably recognized it already even though many of the letters are missing that's because Thanksgiving has a very special form so has this word can you tell what it is hippopotamus as you've seen some words can be recognized easily because they're form is so special but look at these two words they look very much alike the only difference between them is the order of these two letters it is is easy to confuse silver with sliver unless you see each word quite accurately these two words are almost exactly alike except for one letter it's easy to read through when you should be reading thorough unless you are careful to notice that little o and the clue for recognizing a word may be even smaller than this the main difference between between these and those is just a small line practice in writing Troublesome pairs of words will help you recognize the slight differences between them now let's test your speed of recognition of forms watch carefully ready try again ready do you know what it is yet the less time you need need to look at a word to recognize it the faster you can read you can build your speed by using cards with words on them practice with someone else flashing the cards like this by improving your speed and accuracy in seeing words you'll improve your skills in recognizing words by the way they look can you read this sentence you're seeing only the top half of it if you can it shows you have some skill at recognizing the form and use of words perhaps you have to see more of the letters to recognize certain words is that enough you can try this yourself lay a card over a line of print then lower it slowly until you can read what is written this will give you good practice in recognizing words by their form and by their use or context what word is torn from the bottom of the page if you guessed right you made good use of context the way the word was used in the sentence what is the word that has been partly blocked out is this the one you guessed if it is you used context to help you recognize the word here is another sentence with part of a word missing which of these three similar words makes the best sense here you should have picked this word through here is one more sentence with part of a word missing which of these three words makes the best sense here this one scared but usually when you read words aren't missing from sentences suppose you had thought this word was scarred if you had been paying attention to to the way the word was used you would have seen it didn't make good sense so far you have seen words that you should be able to recognize by their form and by their context but suppose this is a word you don't recognize my form and suppose the context doesn't help you very much and you have stopped then you must try to recognize the word in some other way rivalry rivalry but you must know how to sound out a word to do that letters represent sounds in our spoken language when letters are joined to form a word they represent the sound of that word when it is spoken the sound of the vowels in a word are the key to the sound of the word in hat a has a short sound a if we gave it a long sound a we would have a different word hate usually in a one syllable word if there are two vowels the first vowel has a long sound and the second vowel is silent if there is only one vowel at the middle or beginning of a one- syllable word usually it has a short sound for example bit short eye bite long eye silent E got short o goat long o silent a to sound out words of more than one syllable you must know how to break them into single syllables every syllable has at least one vowel in this word the letter y is used as a vowel very often consonants that come to together are put into separate syllables let's try another word how shall we break this into syllables separate the two L's let's try separating the first part this way if we try the rule for pronouncing one syllable words with two vowels this part would probably be pronounced light this is probably L and this syllable is probably sounded F sat L light satellite now you recognize it not only is the sound of the syllables important but also the stress or accent here is a word broken into its syllables manage that's not familiar but manage is trying the accent on different syllables may be necessary before or you recognize a word of course there is much more than this in learning to sound out many words in this sentence is a word you all know but some of you may not recognize it there are many ways you might try to break it into syllables and pronounce it but suppose it still didn't sound like a word you knew then go to a dictionary while dictionaries are important for help helping you find the meanings of words they are also very useful in helping you recognize words a dictionary shows you how a word is broken into syllables what the sounds of the syllables are and how they are stressed penicillin now you recognize the word if you don't understand how a word is pronounced from the letters and symbols a dictionary uses you'll find an explanation in the pronunciation key using at the bottom of the page of course once you've recognize the word you must put it back into context to see if it makes sense before going on so here we have Tom who is efficient in word recognition how about you do you need to improve your word recognition skills remember practice recognizing the forms of words accurately and quickly as you read when a word doesn't make sense to you in the way it is used stop to see where the trouble is if you can sound out a word by yourself or by using a dictionary you may discover that the word isn't what you think it is when you recognize words correctly your reading makes sense and it makes sense that developing accurate and Rapid word recognition skills is an important part of becoming a better [Music] reader yeah there's some questions there um regarding some of the new pronunciations that we run across with these old films U some of you point them out in the comments protein uh or protein is one of them um big debate about that and I don't know when that change took place but it seemed like everybody started talking about protein uh at some point but but there was before some year maybe in the mid-60s it was prodian all right um I want to burp but I can't I'm going to try not to burp in your face um so I've been invited or we've been invited to participate in the to tapping tournament with the found footage Festival folks um that will be Tuesday evening live um over the years we have found some toet tapping uh songs since the last time we did a head-to-head a special head-to-head with footage festival and we did this whole bracketed system and all that stuff it's a big pain in the butt so what I did is I went through our list of things that we thought were toet tappers and I've created this kind of uh compilation of a bunch of these things uh and so what I'm I don't have anything that's won't go over well let's go ahead and show this because everybody loves otter enjoy or seals I'm not sure what these what mammal this is um I watched a little bit of it but I didn't glean what the mammal was this is warm coat enjoy it's good to relax after a busy day an average day but a busy day these fellows wearing the warm coats spend a good part of each day just searching for food and in this sea at this point in time it's becoming difficult to find enough food to go around but things are looking up as you will [Music] see amchitka Island the fourth large island from the far end of the craggy illusion chain about 1400 M Southwest of Anchorage Alaska Wildlife abounds throughout the island chain but most unique of all inhabitants in The Frigid Waters around these cheerless fog bound Islands the sea otter an aquatic mammal ungainly and almost helpless ashore in the sea he has [Music] Grace and [Music] style bristling silver whiskers make him seem serious and wise fact is he is shy and suspicious he has a troubled memory of man who for centuries had been a fearsome enemy time was when sea otter numerous as flocks of birds swam and fished the coastal Waters of America from the outer tip of the uans on down into Mexico but that was long ago perhaps the world's most Lux urious fur fine dense and very valuable almost two centuries of hunters had roamed the Seas decimating sea otter colonies and by the turn of the 20th century these Pleasant playful creatures were on the verge of Extinction other fur bearing animals along these Windor Shores suffered much the same plight but before great natural resources could be lost forever conservation had begun in 1911 the international fur seal treaty was signed the sea otter and other animals were now protected by law in 1913 the uan chain was made a National Wildlife Refuge the few remaining sea otter colonies began to grow again but the process was painfully slow sea otter reproduce in their own time a single pup is the rule twins or triplets are extremely rare gastation lasts a year and for another year the pup is helpless it lives an easygoing life mostly clinging to its mother's chest she is indulgent and affectionate but strict now and again she may cuff the pup teaching him to dive for food stay underwater kelp to hide from his enemies and snooze a sea otter lives about 15 years each year a colony can be expected to increase by only one pup per 10 sea otter of population even so sea otter populations have grown there are large colonies in the uans in Prince William sound some in Monteray Bay California perhaps a total of 25 or 30,000 sea arter but where sea arter once flourished in great numbers no colonies exist today at amchitka the colony grew until there were more mouths to feed than natural food resources could handle at last count perhaps 3,000 otters including Harvey here this chap has a voracious appetite he will eat a quarter of his own weight in a day shellfish his favorite but also quantities of fish and Squid table manners he's irrepressible his chest is his table he uses his front paes with dexterity and self assurance still he can't seem to avoid spilling his food contaminated fur will lose its water repellency when this happens the Otter's skin is exposed and vulnerable his body temperature drops and the icy cold of the sea threatens his life since his life depends on cleanliness he spends a great deal of time scrubbing his fur after meals fast moving seawater helps wash away food scraps but he prefers to handle the job himself he scrubs vigorously behind the ears under the arms the chest where most of the food scraps fall the top of the head oh that feels good grooming himself is his most timec consuming daily chore but meals are important too an average adult male sea otter weighs about 80 lb to sustain this weight he needs plenty of food amchitka Waters once teamed with food today this same area can no longer support a growing Colony ordinarily the sea otter is not migratory if he were he would find abundance where sea otter colonies lived two centuries ago in those miles of coastal sea between the uans and California Alaska had long hoped to transplant hard press amchitka sea otters to selected new homes where they could Thrive and multiply a difficult and ambitious undertaking amchitka in 1968 was a busy Island the United States atomic energy commission was engaged in a program to develop the island as a remote supplementary site for underground nuclear tests there was equipment and ground transportation there were facilities and quarters that might accommodate Alaska's transplant team and there was C130 aircraft on regular schedules arriving fully loaded with equipment and supplies and very often departing with no caros assigned for return flights Operation Sea Otter transplant could get underway and with the aec on hand and ready to help on a scale not otherwise possible a Cooperative conservation effort the United States Department of the Interior the state of Alaska and the United States atomic energy commission working as a team alute Fisher skilled and weather hardened had arrived on amchitka in July 1968 their supervisor a marine biologist from the Alaska State Department of Fish and [Music] Game Crews head for the sweeping beds of kelp offshore where the sea otters hide it's a rolling Restless sea the air air is damp and brittle cold but these men are hearty descendants of aluts who hunted these same Waters many years ago on the sea away from Shore they are not alone here and there a dark whiskered head SE kelp is protection for the otter here he can hide from men he can anchor himself against rough Seas or sudden squalls and dine on clams sea urchins and fish fish the nylon Nets are strung out around the kelp [Music] beds if a fellow is curious or careless he'll find his way into a net morning after morning the boats are out and the Nets are spread the crews carefully collect about 50 Arters each week they will be brought ashore fed and cared for until they can be flown to their new homes easy [Music] now into the holding tank that's more like it there are four large holding tanks for cleanliness fresh sea water is pumped continuously into the tanks as unclean water is flushed out each tank holds 10 to 15 sea otter Harvey hasn't changed a bit the service is good and the menu is good squid shrimp crab during this phase of the transplant operation our friends consumed a total of 10,000 lb of food 50 or 60 Arters are just enough for one [Music] transplant they are made ready for the trip Easy Does It [Music] the C130 cargo aircraft can accommodate 60 sea otters there would be a total of seven transplants flights would vary from 3 to 8 hours depending upon destination to keep the passengers comfortable cabin pressures are maintained at a simulated altitude of 1500 ft and at the lowest possible temperature the takeoff and a flight over the Pacific to destinations 2,000 Mi away in Southeast Alaska otter are transferred to amphibious aircraft for short flights to six selected locations near Anette and Sitka or to boats for the shuttle trip to proloff in all 359 sea otters by Summer's end transported and gently released into the friendly water off the Alaskan [Music] Coast after the brief humiliation of captivity they are pleased with their New Freedom they are healthy unruffled by the flight from amchitka hungry as usual and still have a sense of humor this story has a happy ending otter have lived in these Seas before more than a 100 years have passed and hopefully they will live and Thrive here again it will take time and there is still some danger seen through a gun sight an otter is an easy target from the shore close by a part of the happy ending is up to us nature will see to the rest unmolested these few transplanted sea otters will reproduce and in time become substantial colonies a rich Legacy for generations to come right now they are happy in new homes they have been rudely moved but they will adjust as before they will search out the food they need they will keep their coats clean and warm they will play and amuse each other even as you and I right Harvey [Music] [Music] did that say it was the atomic energy commission what the hell holy cow I was not expecting that at all
