e e is is is is is for I I hi everybody I'm skip alimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16mm films not unlike the one that is being scanned behind me on our Laser Graphics uh scanner doing a 4K scan of a film that I don't think was ever shown uh it is immaculate shape it's beautiful beautiful cat of chrome not a scratch um so we will watch that later this week uh so we just watched a film strip uh sharing with neighbors featuring my favorite uh character in the film strips Steve and his family uh and there's others in that series that I will try to unearth and show that was transferred with our new scanning device which is a little tiny box I don't have it with me I I I pre-scan this um because of this had stuff going on this morning anyways um let's France uh I very much like the Diabolical uh Catman uh he's a good villain character uh so uh I have been reaching out to folks and I have some friends at National Archives and they are not very happy right now but uh I did mention that I was showing the HOA uh shorts that are hosted by the National Archives because these National Archives of course hosts all the US prop Ganda materials that were made over the years um and uh my friend said oh well here's a weird one you should if you haven't seen this one already this is HOA shares a dish of his yogurt and uh this is uh a different group of puppeteers it's still marionette but it's different it's not Mary Grace's uh marionette this is somebody else so here's HOA shares a dish of his yogurt and how does that how does that transfer to your Dunkey uncooperative indeed he was replied the hoer as a matter of fact my Dunkey has been so lazy so stubborn and so foolish lately that only this morning I decided to sell him at public auction naturally I reach this decision after a great deal of deliberation then too my wife has been complaining about the Beast and well you know how persistently a wife can nag so I had no other choice than to auction off my [Music] donkey men of a here I give you my solemn oath that never mark you never have I had the privilege of offering such an energetic Dunkey at public auction look at this Noble Beast observe this spotless coat what am I offered for this most obedient this most Sublime of all animals who will start the bidding on the finest Dunkey in akah here nay the finest Dunkey in all the world 50 gou you dare but bid 50 g for that Splendid animal two L three L five l seven L eight L nine l 10 L 10 L do I hear 11 are you all through biding all right 10 L once 10 L twice sold sold to our hja for 10 L I knew that now my Dunkey had learned his lesson and never again would he give me [Music] [Laughter] [Music] trouble so H you brought back your own dkey that's the funniest story I not now under my great plan all would share and share alike my friend when two people have a common purse one sings and the other weeps why wor empty words that's your trouble empty words and no action this is the time for Action this is the time for my big plan now is the time to strike how made my poor misguided friend remember that only those with patience will be rewarded why do you keep evading the real issue why I'll tell you why because you cannot disprove that everyone should share everything if you will allow me my friend I believe I can come sit sit here beside [Music] me I with my yogurt besides I've only poured it into my side of the bowl but it seep through to my side then hammed perhaps now you will understand why some things by their very nature must always be private [Music] if all the sky were paper and all the trees pens and all the Waters of the earth ink they would not suffice to record the wisdom of Ara [Music] now that I have told my story I too must go for there are many coffee houses in the many cities and Villages where I would tell this story and my friends perhaps in the not too distant future I will again stop by this coffee house with yet another story about the hja until then may your days be free from sorrow may your friends be countless and may peace be with you [Music] the robins cine puppet production I love it and they weren't I was wrong they were not marionett they were actual hand puppets so there you go uh in all the puppet media next we'll do shadow puppets um or and then puppet animation all right uh so we some of these films I've been showing uh were things that we scanned last week and uh this one is an interesting one this is another perspective film so perspective was oh stop scanning perspective was kind of a sister label to Coronet and I think it has more kind of uh foreign independent uh animation there's it's it's a different different than Coronet Coronet is straight up we're going to teach you a lesson uh although U bear hunt I would question that um but so the perspective label had a lot of things that cornet didn't make directly um but they licensed and distributed so it's it's kind of all over the map and I think it actually has a peel uh for libraries uh so that it could be shown to adults it could be shown you different depending on the subject matter um so this one's called this is way out of the blue uh fashion in the making enjoy [Music] on this one I'm feeling very happy because it's going along like clockwork and he's getting what he wants and we're getting what we want visually it's been hard work but uh I think we're going to see some absolutely outrageous Pages the sort of pages when the r says my God how did they do that [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] that's it here we go now here we go now like now Norman Parkinson apart from the fact that he's been consistently at the top of his field for the last 40 years as a fashion photographer for vog and others is perhaps best known for his portrait photographs with the queen mother and the wedding photographs he did Princess Anne and Mark Phillips Stay Stay Stay Stay guy's got an incredible eye for setting and extravaganzas he's a man who strives for perfection in his pictures I suppose is the one can see from what he's been doing here he knows how to go in and get the picture and we see eye to eye on graphic images he has a way of asking people to do things which it doesn't bother you because he's such a gentleman and he is so English in airplanes and and places where you see an issue of magazine where you know your pictures are you are quite interested to see somebody thumbing through the pages and great joy is when they stop and they go back slowly and this is often a feeling of great pride if people stop because that's really what one's job is to flatter of the reader and show them something that perhaps they haven't seen before we H boat and went is nobody you see you're nobody and you're wearing something see if you're get too important you're more important than the clothes nobody wants that in this thing they are trying to get both I mean they're going to show the clothes and at the same time get a personality to do it and that's very good two Heroes we've got the the outgoing character right very flamboyant right and then we have the rather reclus likee turned in we have talked about it which characters we play in fact it's almost like a film we're going to make so much of the close and I want this to look very thick and very smart we have our pick of the whole Marketplace of all the beautiful clothing that's available in the marketplace we get first selections we can tell manufacturers that we want this garment and not to give it to anybody the clothes are difficult to make look their best in the positions that the models get into for the particular photograph and quite often we have to uh cheat a little bit by pinning them in or even sometimes going to the extreme of cutting them so that they can relax more in certain areas for that particular position if we didn't do this the picture would be limited because we'd have to photograph it just in a straight up and down catalog pose that's good absolutely marvelous the RO is play out oh nice poid are very important for everybody's morale especially the models it doesn't it doesn't come alive in their minds and they feel like they're they don't know exactly what they're doing when they suddenly see this Polaroid they realize exactly what's happening then the hold of that shadow side there's a piece of white wall back there yeah I see what you mean see yeah and then your head will be much better lit yeah okay nice right I think it's called exactly what we were trying to say I don't think it's the role of this magazine or any magazine to dictate fashion what we try and do is present to our readers what's available on the market the different feelings different moods if it works for you if it fits into your lifestyle if it fits into the way you're built and the way you carry yourself and your job then you pick and choose from our Pages put it together for you personally that's the thing that we're trying to get across most of all not that this is a page from GQ and you should go and buy that scarf and wear with that shirt with those shoes you live off the land of course you find locations sometimes you find in this case and we found Pete who was an absolute God because he's the real thing he's the real arrol Flyn hero we're talking about listen we asked you to build the raft okay we'd like you to do something else for us we'll see we'll see what it is basically what we'd like you to do is been some of the pictures I don't know anything about pictures still photographs Parks over here takes Stills you know like fashion pictures whatever and we think it' be a lot of fun and we'd like to pay you I Know M sounding better all time sound better all time here we go I really want some action and remember all you can do from there is go down yeah I want you to be dragging her and she doesn't want to go okay let's go go on that's it that's it all right now wait wait wait wait wait grab her that's SEC go on now pull it take it with you I try [Music] [Music] GQ has become as successful as it now is strongly due to the images of fantasy and reality for our reader with him in mind taking from references that would be familiar to our reader be it movies old new fiction history but things that excite people open your minds and let your your mind flow with it and yet interpret parts of it into your daily life not that you get dressed up in a white suit and become a movie character it's ridiculous but just to like free the soul of these readers in a way that they can put themselves into a white suit walk down the street and be a little more special than the next guy but without being a snow [Music] a lot of photographers work in their own back alley or out of a studio but he's very much a photographer who tends to enjoy going to places where there's a challenge and he's got more energy than I have and he's with all due respect a gentleman who's a lot older than I am but he can run me off my feet working From Dawn Till dust fantastic it floats I knew it was floats perfect dynamite W no I think I am a dictator and I think I'm a very demanding person but I think this is the only way that it can be done and it's just that when one comes towards a big shoot I'm not a person who's unaware of the enormous investment that goes into these things so that I must must try and do my very [Music] best but how do I feel as it comes to the end well I feel sad obviously but the general aura that runs through my mind the sensation is that we have done something very important not easy but something that's very important this is a team and everybody's worked and I think everybody has come saturated with the idea that this has been a very important shoot [Music] [Applause] [Music] all right so here's some trivia for you uh so you saw I don't know if you noticed so the film was about uh GQ Magazine gentleman's quarterly and the film was made by Esquire films Incorporated and distributed by perspective films um all of those were run by the same person person uh David smart and his brother Alfred they David smart and Alfred started cornet films and they were running Esquire and they were for a while running GQ I think it eventually kind of split off but um yeah they were big uh magazine publishing Giants and they got into making educational and instructional films and so there you go there's that weird cross connection that maybe you didn't know um Chicago they're all based in Chicago all right uh we're going to watch some more cornette cuz that's what we do uh although what time is it yeah no we'll watch this I showed this five years ago um but we did a new scan uh we haven't found the color copy of this yet but um this is the Coronet that you know and love uh not uh glamorous models sitting on beaches being COA to do things that they don't necessarily want to do this is uh how honest are you enjoy [Music] watch this scene watch it carefully keep your eye on Bob he's number eight [Music] what did you see do you think Bob's action was honest or dishonest if you saw such an incident what would you do about it that incident came to involve each of us in this room and it caused us to consider the subject of honesty from many angles it sure did that's why Mr Parker he's athletic director of our school suggested that we talk it over with you because well maybe it'll help you to know just what we found out about honesty and we found out plenty to be honest may sound easy some of the time it is but it can be a real problem especially when wanting to be honest conflicts with other things you want to do now getting back to that scene in the locker room it happens that Jim was a witness let's see again exactly what Jim saw well what would you have done I wanted to do the right thing the honest thing but what was it question Bob about it tell Ben that Bob was in his locker reported to Mr Barker I didn't know what to do so I put off doing anything that night I didn't get much sleep the next day at school was awful I just had to do something tell somebody then after school well I guess when you're in a state like that it doesn't take much to set you off say it's Bob looks like he's buying himself a present sure does let's ask him over let's not how come that money he's spending I know where he got it in the locker room yesterday after he thought everybody had gone I saw Bob take something from Ben's pant's pocket I was late dressing I saw it I guess it doesn't take a detective to figure out where he got the money to buy that pen but Bob I can't believe it did you ask if he was missing any money not yet have you reported it not yet but you have to you ought to tell Mr Barker about it right away no you don't you tell Mr Barker and whatever else happens he'll kick Bob off the team where will we be with our Star Center gone and have the schedule left to play G Nick when you put it that way I didn't know what I was going to do but I'd real realized I shouldn't have blurted out in public that way so I asked the kids to promis me not to say a word and did they yes we promised but then this one's on me Terry here's what happened after Jim and Nick left the drugstore Terry and I talked about what Jimma told us until Terry there's nothing for you to do but tell Mr Barker about Bob but we promised Jim a promise to tell a lie doesn't count I didn't promise to tell a lie why it's the same thing I can't understand you're being so calm about having a thief on your team it's your duty to tell Mr Barker and if you don't I will well there I was wanting to be square with Jim but well I didn't want Rose mad at me and it did seem dishonest to conceal a thing like that so it practic the next day I'd made up my mind to speak to Mr buker I don't know just how I was going to say it but Nick and Jim had seen me they moved in fast to keep me from talking well I didn't get to speak to Mr Barker that day I'm not sure I wanted to anyway anyway when I found out what happened I marched right in this office the next day and told Mr Barker now you've seen what actually happened happened what Jim saw well here's the picture I described to Mr Barker that's the picture I gave Mr Barker at the time I really thought I was telling the truth but of course welcome back to you Rose but now let's have a little scull practice of course after Rose made a report I did what was the obvious thing for me to do I questioned Bob and Ben and I found but that can wait right now let let's see what pointers we can pick up about honesty well one thing I learned to be honest you have to find the truth that's not always easy I saw Bob take something from Ben's locker and then I saw him buy an expensive pen it seemed he had stolen some money but you didn't know I'd stolen it that's right and you didn't even give me the benefit of the doubt no you should have asked yourself some questions Jim is it logical to think that Bob would steal does it jive with your past experience of the way Bob operates Jim your physics teacher might say that you uh formed your hypothesis and jumped to your conclusion you skipped that all important part of testing your hypothesis sometimes it takes a lot of testing to find the truth but now can we draw up another General principle about honesty I'd say the next step is pretty obvious tell the truth is it that simple no I don't think it is simple and certainly the way I described Bob slinking in and taking the money that wasn't the truth at least not the way Jim told me the story maybe it was my fault I wasn't careful to tell you exactly what I saw let's call it express the truth we mean being careful that what you say is the truth and also being careful when you talk about a thing being sure that people understand what you mean but there's something more to being honest than just telling the truth when I promised Jim not to say anything and then went to you intending to talk wasn't that dishonest and what about me maybe I wasn't honest when I broke it up and wouldn't let him tell we said at the start that honest often involves conflicts let's think back it seems to me Terry that your intentions were honorable your conflict was between your pledged to Gim and your own sense of there's a good deal to be said for his intentions too he was thinking of the good of the team not that I'm saying he was right if it ever came about that we had to Harbor a known thief on our team in order to win games I guess I wasn't thinking very deep but I could just see the whole season blowing up in our faces maybe maybe inside I didn't really believe Bob was a thief inside I think that's the clue to this bigger thing we're seeking how's this no yourself examine your motives know what you're doing and why you're doing it if your intentions aren't honest then your deed can't be completely honest I guess this is the time for me to explain my hypocrisy when I came in to tell Mr Barker about Bob I started by saying certain things what I said and what I was really thinking were two different things it was something like this Mr Barker there's something you ought to know about one of your boys there's something I want you to know about one of your boys the boys won't say anything so I feel I must be honest and tell you I wish I didn't have to be the one to tell but I want to be sure sure that you find out about Bob foreman and when you do I can just see it you'll kick Bob off the team and Terry will become the regular Center my Terry all he needs is a [Applause] chance you'll be the star of the team and I'll be sitting on top of the world that Mr Barker is the real reason why I had to tell you whether or not I thought I was telling the truth my motive being what it was I was not being honest thanks Rose this hasn't been easy I know but you've learned a lesson a lesson in honesty honesty to yourself and honesty to others that lesson will stand you in good stead all your life I I think we've all learned a good lesson I've always heard that honesty is the best policy now I'm catching on to why that's so it isn't always easy to be honest but when you have a problem involving your own honesty it'll help you to remember these three pointers know yourself be sure of your intentions the motives behind what you're doing and saying find the truth test it in the light of past experience and by checking in every way you can and express the truth make sure you say what you mean to say and make sure your meaning is clear to your listeners now Bob tell us the truth what really happened well as for that fancy pen I'd want ad just such a pen for a long time and I bought it with money my aunt gave me for my birthday and as for what happened in the locker room well it was this way come on let as soon as I finished dressing I headed out into the gym then I remembered something and came back I looked around for Ben but he wasn't there so I went to his locker you see Ben had been doing sound effects for the school radio program that morning and he had bowed something we'd need in practice that's all honest [Music] what a Twist so much Intrigue backstabbing manipulation the whole thing it's like a drama it's like a a little soap opera about High School uh I love it um all right so this is a uh some time ago like two years ago we scanned a bunch of Encyclopedia britanica films and uh have slowly been putting them on our Channel and showing them this one uh for some reason I didn't show back in the day uh and it's kind of whacked out uh and I think it uses uh even though it's film it uses a video analog computer called a scanimate to make some of its effects um so here's power and wheels enjoy [Music] as you can see Captain the dominant form of life on this planet is not visible until we come in close those moving spots are what I mean so intelligent life does exist on this planet our scientists will be pleased as you see CER what we have here is a strange form of metallic life that travels on Wheels speeding over high altitude fascinating but what makes them move you'll see in a moment captain there we are Captain all of these creatures take nourishment in liquid form a high energy diet that is burned up rapidly the digestive system is amazingly waste matter is expelled as a gas hold it can we go back to where the creature is feeding yes sir Captain do we have a case of symbiotic life here you mean the human and the automobile yes Captain symbiosis the automobile is strongly attached to its host it appears that the entire life cycle of the human is related to the automobile from birth to death the first experience humans have with automobiles is just after they are born they usually are taken from their birthplace in a car sometimes even born in a car and at death the body is usually transported in a car to a burial place in between well Captain there is much more watch and you'll see [Music] it started as a Horseless Carriage built by a carriage makers to look like a carriage right down to the socket for a buggy whip automobile the word means self-propelled vehicle originally conceived as a substitute for the horse and [Laughter] buggy some were powered by steam others by electricity then propelled by the internal combustion engine the automobile in a short span of time came to be something more than just another means of transportation it became Something to Believe In this car takes care of me and I take care of it everything goes on Wheels you can't go anywhere without a car working on cars always give me great satisfaction car is a necessity I couldn't earn my living without it but there are too many big cars for luxury and not for convenience cars are a heck of a lot of fun I enjoy mine [Applause] tremendously walking is fine but it sure doesn't get you very far the modern car is a demonstration of the technological skill seat belts secured ignition on power door lock affirmative power seat adjustment adjusted power windows check adjustable steering column adjusted remote control mirror check air conditioning adjusted stereo system [Music] on for some a car is a means of transportation for others it is a means of communication an extension of the personality over a ton of Iron and steel glass rubber Plastics petroleum and horsepower designed to carry a man wherever his whim or fancy dictates the automobile has with certainty transformed the social and cultural life of America it has shortened not only geographical distance but social distance as well before the automobile the social distance between one man on Wheels and another man on Wheels was often quite apparent the automobile closed this Gap Henry Ford's Tin Lizzy provided cheap transportation for everyone it wasn't long before one man on Wheels had the same distinction as another man on Wheels to this extent the automobile brought concrete expression to democratic ideals but ironically the automobile also appeals to something entirely the opposite the idea that one man after all is more successful than another especially if he drives a faster bigger more expensive car the car a man drives often seems to say for its owner look at my car look who I am because the automobile appeals to something more than the need for transportation it has become an extension of the personality to drive a car today is to come of age the automobile is just about the biggest event in a young person's life toy cars for the young later Automotive gadgets fitted to a bicycle and always that day to look forward to a driver's license the proof of entry into today's adult Society with an automobile and a license to drive it a boy or girl comes of age [Applause] and coming of age means depending on the car for social advantage today the car has displaced the home as a setting for courtship and social activity but in providing increased mobility and convenience the automobile has at the same time loosen traditional Family [Music] Ties the technology that makes all of this possible is a byword for Consumer prosperity factories thanks to the assembly line can put a large volume of cars and other Goods on the market and factories through the vast market for automobiles and through organized labor pay workers enough to buy cars nearly one sixth of the nation's Workforce today serves the automobile in manufacturing maintenance and selling and the final product is desirable enough to cause c a man to work long and hard in order to pay for a car or other products that roll off assembly lines the psychological attraction of the automobile is big but in no way more important than the economy that builds around the automobile over 1 half of the world's cars are driven in North America by roughly 12th of the world's population think of the jobs created by the automobile Road building gasoline and oil refining motels the jobbing of parts and supplies the hauling of cars from Factory to showroom parking lots not to mention the car salesman who in his time has become a legend and last but not least there is the vital business of selling to customers on the road an ever expanding source of exotic roadside [Applause] culture side by side with production and sales is maintenance and upkeep an owner of Ford's Tin Lizzy could more often than not take his car apart and repair it himself today's cars require an army of Specialists both for manufacturing and for maintenance in fact many of today's drivers don't know how a Car Works they rely on [Applause] Specialists some of course do it themselves those gifted machine AG tinkerers who understand the purr of an engine nowhere does mechanical genius contribute more to the Glamour and excitement of the automobile than in the sport of racing a sport that exaggerates to the limit of the normal functions and upkeep of the automobile most curious of all Automotive sport the demolition derby the vicarious spectacle that eases the average car owner's anxiety over the everyday hazards of the road [Applause] the modern car is a demonstration of practical technology whether to test the limits of speed or safety or determine the efficiency of new fuels man is constantly at play with automotive technology for the automobile is in essence a form of idealized toy practical functional necessary an art form styled in the ultimate preferences of the customer but the Fashions can change rapidly today's glittering Bobble becomes tomorrow's scrap [Applause] from the beginning the attraction of the automobile was that it allowed a man to go where he pleased it enabled him to escape from the bonds of space and time no longer was he dependent on timetables trains or trolleys no longer was he bound to a destination that was not his own but the car as a means of Escape soon proved to be an illusion The Lure of the open road can can be not so alluring when it is shared with thousands of other drivers learning about cars has traditionally been a man's interest so when things go wrong but today along with the boys the woman driver is fast coming into her own regardless of who drives it takes learning and skill to survive in this age of the car and even if you learn the lessons well Mr cook you're charged failing to have control of your vehicle how do you played sir all right sir sorry play guil cour will find you guilty sir send you pay fine of $12 the expressive vehicle called the automobile is not without problems [Music] for some entering a car is the same as putting on a mask people don't know who you are so your car speaks for [Applause] you some drivers Express themselves in deadly [Applause] [Music] ways there are now more than 50,000 people killed on North America highways every year we can safely predict that the present Trend in automotive fatalities will not show any significant downtrend in the near future taking into consideration the factor of human psychology and the number of moving vehicles on the road today much of the safety of driving a car rests with the self-control of the driver but not all hazards of driving are his responsib ibility some follow from the sheer number of cars on the road one man's convenience another man's nuisance multiply that Advantage by millions one car owner can do little about the smog that accumulates from the exhaust of millions of automobiles he cannot control the hazards of heavy traffic or alter the ability of his car to take the shock of collision the the driver must also rely in part on the organized protective efforts of others for his safety a half century ago Henry Ford predicted that the automobile would Doom the city cars will take people out of the Cities into the countryside and keep them down on the farm and the big movement has taken place but in the opposite direction today the same Highway that lead automobiles away from cities also lead into cities pouring more cars into already congested streets displacing The Pedestrian dividing neighborhoods befouling the [Applause] air today 30% of urban space is devoted to moving Vehicles if the use of automobiles continues to grow at the present rate cities of the future may well be little more than ribbon of concrete interlaced with parking lots each age has its problems before the automobile there was the horse in 1899 Scientific American predicted that the automobile would solve the problem of Filth in the streets caused by the horse the Improvement in City conditions by The General en adoption of the motor car can hardly be overestimated streets clean dustless and odorless with rubber tired vehicles moving swiftly and noiselessly will eliminate a greater part of the nervousness distraction and strain of modern Metropolitan [Music] Life the automobile solved the problems of the horse all right who will solve the problems of the automobile how do you think they'll solve their problem Captain I'm not sure perhaps we'll have to return another time to find out [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] so there was some uh nervous nous in there transfusion um or at least the uh the sound effect which is um kind of the wilham scream of car crashes which shows up in many films in that film of course was from the golden year of educational films I think we've all voted is which was 1972 beautiful weird film though weird I uh I was uh going through it and I was like what is going there's aliens and like what and what I thought it was going to be like maybe aliens but then just talking about the technology of how engines work and no this was this is different it's really fascinating anyways sometimes encyclopedia branica goes down that route and uh they certainly did it in the 70s maybe a little bit in the 60s but did not do that prior to that time um and I have a a warm place in my heart for encyclopedia branica now um for a couple reasons uh which I will talk about at some point but uh yeah thanks for tuning in today very
