hi I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and think about them and talk about them in the comments uh today I'm not able to do a live show so this is pre-recorded uh and this is based on a show that I used to do back when I was doing a bunch of shows in North Carolina it's called angry night and you might be watching it at night uh so these are films that some of which I've shown probably most of which I've shown on the lunchtime streaming show but these are all Consolidated and thematically related so uh we're gonna get started with one of my favorite films from Encyclopedia Britannica which I show any opportunity I get called me too or is it me too yeah I think that's what it is question mark me too enjoy [Music] foreign [Music] foreign foreign just that that angst that kid angst I I really love it um and just the you know I'm not going to participate you won't let me participate well I'm gonna wreck everything um very much a kid brain type of thing uh this next film is uh animated and uh was released by Coronet films it's called Uh the angry movie and we get to see a little girl have a tantrum enjoy [Music] foreign [Music] I'll show them all of them I ain't gonna be angry [Music] mom is dumb Daddy's dumb too he's stupid and he's never home he's always working and the Grandpa's dumb pretty dumb and the Candy Man Karen's a brat I hate her Susan too I hate them Karen most of all [Music] oh I wish I wish they were all dead [Music] oh not you kitty you're the only good person in the whole world I only hate them the sun's out I hate the Sun screaming you're just like grown-ups all the time busy busy busy I hate you not now we don't have time they never have time grown-ups are stupid I'm never gonna grow up and I hate wearing Susan's old shoes they're yucky I don't want to go into my sister's old clothes I'm gonna say something bad dirty words um mudface pink pot cook vegetables they don't help besides I hate dirty words poor Kitty You're Never Gonna See Karen again because I'm never gonna play with her again never ever [Music] hey Kitty look this is stupid old Karen foreign oh I don't want to be me anymore nobody likes me anymore I want to be somebody else Mommy I won't hurt you kitty don't be scared of me oh it's raining again I won't be anyone I won't be anyone at all ever darling telephone I'm not darling Angel are you unhappy about something I'm not Angel and I'm not unhappy I'm mad and I'm angry open the door and let me give you a big hug no it's too late room she talked to you Karen hello Karen what are you doing nothing what are you doing nothing want to come over to my house we could play something you want to come okay I'll be right over [Music] foreign [Music] so this next film is actually um it's not much fun being angry and this is part of the most important person series and um yeah it's fun it's animated but still fun nonetheless enjoy the most important person in the whole wide world is [Music] the most important person in the whole wide world is you come on we'll show you let's find out more about the things you feel and do cause you're the most important person in the world to you that's the last straw absolutely the last straw what is it bird I just never thought he sure is Angry Angry did I hear you say angry I'm more than that I'm furious it's all right to be angry bird it is huh sure sometimes it helps to talk about it what are you angry about look the last straw somebody came and took all my straw I was gonna build a new Nest now what have I got one piece is strong I have a pretty good idea well hi there friends I bet you're all admiring What I've Done cleaned up the whole yard isn't it beautiful why are you bragging about it alone crying a minute what is this hey hold on now about you Angry Birds what's hiding gonna solve all right Bird I'm gonna get angry too that's the last straw you see he admitted it you're super bad I'll kill each other please tell them why you're angry you took my straw that's why and you know it that was your straw I picked up you knew it laying all over the yard I thought it was only a mess gee bird you must be angry he was gonna build a new Nest oh I'm terribly sorry if somebody would have told me I guess I could have told you first or asked you before I beat you up little bird sometimes words can anger people all right I didn't beat you up I'm sorry and I'm sorry I threw your straw away apparently we all help birds find new straw great idea please there are some things a bird must do for let's go bird you better not do that it's not yours somebody will get angry shoe you nasty little bird shoot I beg your party what do you mean by pecking at my pillow get me so angry well buddy now you know how it feels he sure was angry I tried to talk with her about it you even tried to say you're sorry we heard sometimes talking just doesn't work but she honestly tried and that's important too you know being angry is no fun I'm sure glad I'm not angry anymore but tired I'm very tired and when you're tired is the best thing to do is did he say rest [Music] the most important all right so there's another film part of the most important person series and some people have said that they used to see this on Captain Kangaroo um and uh so these were distributed of course through schools on film but it seems like it was something that was maybe on CBS uh this next film we get to watch kids make mistakes which is always hilarious and it's called oops I made a mistake enjoy the most important person in the whole wide world is you and your hardly even know you the most important person in the whole wide world is you come on we'll show you let's find out more about the things [Music] I was cutting with my scissors cutting out a picture of a painted I had painted of a person's face I really liked it and I tried to be real careful cause and then it happened something happened [Music] that I cried and cried yes I felt so bad cause I really tried anyone [Music] I was hoping set the table putting down the silverware and folding every now getting Easy by each place I got the glasses and I tried to be real careful as I pour the milk but I was just too late for it had happened something happened and I felt so bad that I cried and cried yes I felt so bad cause I really tried but you made a mistake that's all and making mistakes is never fun to say oops I made a mistake that's all and the sex can happen to anyone anyone can make a mistake happens every day and you never know when the thing to do when it happens to you is try to figure out what went wrong and try a little harder to make it go wrong when you start all over again I was building up a building taller than the tallest building I had tried before it grew and grew and grew so hard I felt terrific and I placed my real carefully one at a time then right before my eyes [Music] yes I felt so bad cause I really tried [Music] anyone [Music] [Music] all right this next film is called I'm mad at me and it's part of a series that we have on different types of feelings and there's a song about it um there's a song about both of them so I think we've included these in the toe tapping tournament so I don't think they're eligible for this year so this is I'm mad at me enjoy [Music] thank you everybody has feelings feelings every day and it's all right to have feelings feelings Every Which Way cause feelings make us people people who can say I'm a very special person and I'm feeling this way today [Music] silly and hairy scary times how do you feel right now [Music] for their lonely times and friendly times okay and let's go play times frown and feeling down time how do you feel right now [Music] for there are serious times and Furious times jealous and even envious times I'm glad I'm so mad at times how do you feel right now [Music] everybody has feelings feelings every day make sure you put the lock on it maybe it's because my dad said give the lawn a trim later on I've hurt myself and now I'm mad at him feeling very mad at you [Music] responsible for trimming the trees in your neighborhood Jamie I wonder whether it's because I played around I didn't know the answer I felt myself [Music] can someone else tell us the answer [Music] thank you I wonder whether it's because this guy was playing rough he tagged me out at home because I wasn't fast enough why am I feeling very mad at you why am I doing the things that I do [Music] thank you [Music] I wonder whether it's because I tried to build a kite I tore it all to pieces when I couldn't get it right why am I doing the things that I do [Music] and maybe it's because I left my bike [Music] it up and now my bike is gone why am I angry there's no one here to see I'm the only one around I'm really mad at me move that bike out of here make sure you put the lock on it [Music] I wonder whether it's because I climbed the tallest tree I fell and hurt my elbow and scraped and skinned my knee why am I angry there's no one here to see I'm the only one around I'm really mad at me I guess I lost my head things are going badly I should go back to bed [Music] things are going badly I should go back to bed foreign [Music] because it's almost like a uh recounting the Kennedy assassination like it replays the scenes and tries to recount what happens and it all features this little uh black boy who brought his Beth best birthday present for show and tell and how it all falls apart on the playground um it's just this anger and seething and misunderstandings it's such a great film and I wish that everybody could see it just to kind of go like oh yeah that's right I need to kind of chill out a little bit before I respond anyways this is getting angry enjoy foreign Bell hasn't rung yet and everyone is still on the playground Willie is angry so are all his friends a few minutes ago everyone was playing happily now no one is happy and no one wants to play anymore what happened here why is everyone upset the story began earlier this morning before Willie left for school today was Willy's birthday his mother gave him the one present he wanted more than anything else a scale model Space Capsule of course Willie wouldn't take a toy to school but since his class was studying space flight he thought his teacher might like to show the Space Capsule to the class on the way to school he met Michael and Jose then Freddie and James caught up with them Willie's friends wanted to get to school early so they could play on the playground but Willie didn't want to hurry he was being very careful of his present at the big intersection he waited for the signal then he looked carefully for traffic before crossing the street the Space Capsule was the best present he'd ever had so he carried it very carefully near school he met Maria and Lois and perlene what you got wait a minute Willie Willie wanted the girls to see his present but he thought it might be better if his teacher showed the capsule to the whole class at once when he reached the schoolyard he sat down to keep an eye on his present and watch his friends play the boys were playing keep away [Music] the girls were jumping rope [Music] Michael was finding out what his mother had packed him for lunch [Music] I guess [Music] now watch this is where the trouble started the ball hit his birthday present Willie was so angry at the boys that he took the ball away from them [Music] wait a minute Willie now slow down they all thought they knew exactly what had happened but did they know Listen to Willie and his friends tell their stories while you watch what happened again see if their stories match what really took place but Freddie threw the bowl not James thank you did Freddie mean to hit the capsule did James understand why Willy had run away with the ball game James ran through the jump rope not Willy and did the girls see the Space Capsule knocked over Jose bumped the lunch bag not Freddy Michael was mistaken too in fact no one was right no one had stopped first to find out what had really happened instead everyone got angry [Music] Willie was so angry he didn't care what had happened all he could think of was his best birthday present ruined have another one anymore my mother got it for me for my birthday and now I can't get not going to next next birthday but everything that had happened was an accident no one tried to hurt anyone else then why was everyone angry could the trouble have been prevented how what would you have done here stop the film and talk for a few minutes then when you have some ideas turn on the projector again and find out what Willie and his friends learned the capsule wasn't broken at all like a real Space Capsule it was supposed to come apart Miss Ferguson simply locked the pieces together again if Willie had looked first he would have seen this too and he wouldn't have lost his temper his friends decided that They too had acted without thinking if they had found out first why Willie was upset they wouldn't have gotten angry either getting angry didn't help Willie solve a problem in fact getting angry kept him from realizing that he didn't really have a problem accidents happen sometimes and sometimes people don't stop to think they just get angry and when they get angry they may hurt other people even though they don't mean to this next film is also animated and this is for adults who have anger control issues uh it's called Mr Finley's feelings and it's brilliant and I think it was animated by a British animation company for a life insurance company but it's it's wonderful enjoy foreign [Music] tells the story of a very important day in my life you're going to hear me talk quite a lot in this picture but you won't ever see me this is where I work I'm the office manager in the H.R Burton Factory right now is this big day of mine begins it's almost five and about time middling around with a quiz in the newspaper here take a look over my shoulder ah do I feel refreshed and energetic after good night's sleep as most of the time would I say I was reasonably hell yes I have headaches but then nearly everybody does on my own good good boss yes oh Tom busy this evening no sir would you mind very much finishing this report you can work on it at home if you'd rather okay HR hate to do this to you hope you don't mind it'll be on your desk first thing in the morning sir I'd appreciate it very much [Music] appreciate it you little Napoleon since when did you ever upload hey John don't forget poker tonight tell me out George HR just unloaded an evening's work on me oh tough luck see what you're missing after that I start through the factory mad at Burton mad at missing the poker game [Music] [Music] 9 16 24 42 96. [Music] 9 16 24 42 144. [Music] can't you work somewhere else Jane you're bothering daddy 9 16 24 42. [Music] 9 16. there's about 100 calories 100 Milli how can I work if you keep on talking to me head is splitting I'm awfully sorry dear we'll all be more quiet 9 16 24 42 88 107. stop that gun I'll give you till [Music] 10. I give up I give up other men have helpful families not me sorry Daddy [Music] nobody gives me the least consideration [Music] I'm sick and tired of letting people push me around [Music] oh I suppose he's gonna give me the worst [Music] what's the charge with a reckless driver I think we can make that stick [Music] George Billy told me you'd been arrested for reckless driving that stupid so-and-so of a [ __ ] listen I was driving along carefully as usual winding my own [Music] thank you cut off that Sergeant wouldn't even let me open my mouth he seems like a reasonable guy Tom so you're gonna believe him instead of me I thought you were going to spend the evening working at home I couldn't get any peace in that mad house my headache was driving me crazy no peace at home no piece of the office burden he just loves messing things up for me standing behind that petition all day long spying spying spying thinks he's Napoleon maybe it's you who they sees Napoleon why didn't you tell him you had a day try telling him anything I think he'd have understood quit picking on me George I'm in enough trouble [Music] Tom I've known you all my life you're a great guy but you do fly off the handle and think people are picky on you when they're not what do you mean by that well even back in school remember our third grade teacher Gladys Stark that old battle ax [Music] yes [Music] just a minute Tom she wasn't like that [Music] yes mistak multiply three times seven um seven times three you mean yes George um [Music] I don't know Miss stack I've been absent I missed all right George it's 21. but let's go over it again in a few minutes she couldn't have been more patient okay okay maybe I did have the cop and the boss and even Starkey slightly out of focus but there is one person who always had it in for me remember our old top sergeant that slave driver Driscoll he sure hated my guts I ran into Driscoll the other day he asked about you said you were the best company clerk he'd ever had did he Pete's sake if I got everybody mixed up what's wrong George am I sick or something maybe you're making yourself sick you remember what a mess Bill Jones got himself into last year took the doc six months to set him straight think I should see a doctor sure why not other people can help too you know it's a good idea to talk things out with someone you like and Trust George it would swelling you to come all the way down here I wish I could see things people the way you do most of the time lately it's as if the cold darn world [Music] problems [Music] don't worry Tom I feel like that myself sometimes what do you do then well I blow my top once in a while when somebody really does me do it but when I feel mad at everybody when people all look cock-eyed it's mostly because I'm mad at myself maybe I think I've done something wrong maybe I'm uh Philly I'm not as good as somebody else when I get to feeling good about myself why then most everybody else looks pretty good too you make it sound easy it isn't easy Tom you got to keep working at it but it sure is worth hello there what both of you ghr himself George just came to see me oh come on you won't have to see the judge until next week everything all right now I must run along don't bother coming in tomorrow morning I'll send for those papers bye so he fired me now who's cockeyed George say Tom don't forget staff meeting tomorrow at three well I'll beat uh you've got good friends mister come on I'll see you home head still ache what no by God it's gone well as George and I walked out of that jail together I began to see things a little straighter I'd learn one important lesson anyway I knew then that a guy could get himself into a whale of a lot of trouble if he didn't understand what his feelings could do to him I've got plenty more to learn I know it's not going to be simple or easy but I'm sure gonna try well now you've seen how things look to me at the beginning and at the end of this very important day in my life maybe you had a day like this yourself maybe I seem familiar to you [Music] all right the final film for tonight is or today is uh the aggressive impulse and this was distributed by Encyclopedia Britannica and it it's interesting it kind of it's kind of all over the place and I feel like I've seen another film like this by Encyclopedia Britannica where it's like what what are you what are you talking about like where are we going with this uh and this is about uh aggression is an animal trait as a human trait um it's all over the place like I said so here it is the aggressive impulse enjoy [Music] Encyclopedia Britannica educational Corporation presents a study of human life man and Beast [Music] foreign [Music] the violent Clash of two powerful animals is among the most dramatic and spectacular events in nature [Music] the fury of these battles suggests a fight to the death but that is seldom the case in fact most of these fights do not even result in a serious injury why then do these animals suddenly attack each other and just as suddenly back off it may appear that animals fight and Slaughter each other without cause actually fighting among animals is rare and when it happens there is usually a reason in a herd of bison the Bulls compete with each other for the females when one bulb moves too close to another's cow the battle is on the Bulls fight furiously not to kill each other but rather to prove which is stronger when one of the Bulls is unable to win he quits and the stronger bull claims The Waiting female [Music] oh [Music] audition also is sometimes violent dueling over a woman may now seem romantic but in times past it was often a deadly business animals also fight to protect their homes in order to guard his Harem of females the elephant sealed bull establishes his own home territory whenever another bull seal tries to enter this area there is sure to be a fight this response may be an instinct an inborn Behavior which does not need to be learned and cannot be changed and many animals animals there also seemed to seem to be inborn limits on fighting these seals for example only bite each other on the neck where there is thick skin and scar tissue and as in most species the seals allow the loser of these battles to escape unharmed [Music] um foreign while it may not be an instinct in humans we too often get angry when someone intrudes on our personal territory signs fences even National boundaries are all ways we warn strangers to keep their distance or risk being attacked when bighorn sheep Clash the ringing of their horns can often be heard for Miles these sheep are fighting to determine their Rank and status in the herd older and stronger sheep are sometimes challenged by younger animals and occasionally a new leader will emerge from these fights but more often the Challenger is beaten and simply limps away foreign [Music] status are also important to humans and may be expressed in many ways while actual fighting is rare we compete for money and power big houses and big cars are common symbols of success in this struggle [Music] some animals attack and kill other animals for food but this predatory killing is different from other forms of aggression when it is hungry the lion like all predators is a killer but when its hunger is satisfied the lion is really very peaceful uh [Music] Man Too is a predator armed with clubs or spears he learned to hunt down other animals as ruthlessly as any lion for many primitive societies hunting was a major source of food and clothing the development of Agriculture decreased the need for hunting but it did not decrease our taste for meat just as these pygmies hunt the elephant or any animal stalks its prey we continue to kill for food [Music] we raise millions of animals specifically to be killed and eaten this does not mean we are heartless murderers it simply means we are meeting our need for food all life helps to sustain other life from the tiniest organisms to the large animals at the top of the food chain [Music] the behavior of some animals is inborn and cannot be changed but most higher animals can and do learn from the environment by observing adults young monkeys learn to gather food [Music] similarly bears and other Predators must learn to hunt these and other aggressive acts often require some kind of training guard dogs must be taught to act ferociously at this obedience school trainer Michael Kamer teaches dogs to protect people and property the dog's aggressiveness is determined by the kind of training it receives as a whole I would say the domesticated dog is basically a peace-loving animal what we have to do is actually inflate the dog's ego to a point where he becomes so self-confident and actually cocky that he wouldn't provoke within the capable of following through with an actual assault some dogs are taught only to make threatening noises others are trained to actually attack on command just as animals can learn to fight and attack so can humans Warfare is the most tragic example of this ability throughout history armies have clashed in thousands of bloody battles [Music] over the years there has been a dramatic increase in the destructive Fury of War desperately need to know if we or any animal can learn to be less violently aggressive [Music] Tigers the largest of all cats in the wild they are Fierce Predators but even when raised in captivity tigers are dangerous trainer Harry Thomas has learned to control these frightening Animals by reinforcing their more gentle Behavior he can teach them to perform I use a type of training which I call affection training and in this we've gotten away from the old school which we call the whip gun and share type of thing and we use more of a one-to-one relationship with the animal we try to find what tricks or behaviors best suit the cat usually I watch the cats playing and in plane I see a particularly good jumping cat or a rollover cat and so then we reward the cat from there and pick up what it does best instead of trying to force it into something [Music] these Tigers may be trained but they are not tame they have not lost their ability to kill they have only learned to restrain it occasionally when I fed the cats and you give them a knuckle or a shin bone you can see with one crunch they bite through the bone and you realize what power and strength they actually have it doesn't really scare me it makes me respect them I think for the powerful animal that they are working with nine tigers at once is still risky I've proven that man can get close to a tiger I love them and I respect them and I feel that they show me signs of certain affection back but a couple times I've almost slipped and I can see on their faces the urge to jump and I don't think you can ever get that wild Instinct out of them even in a natural killer like the tiger violence can be controlled yeah no matter how Fierce the competition There are rules in every game which limit the amount of violence these battles demonstrate the many ways we have learned to fight without actually killing each other [Music] many species of animals have natural ways to limit aggression wolves avoid bloody tests of strength by play fighting here again a game replaces an actual fight the loser of the game deliberately exposes his throat to the teeth of the other wolf to Signal he is beaten [Music] much of our humor is yet another form of controlled aggression violent feelings are expressed but throwing a custard pie doesn't really hurt anyone [Music] many people believe some violence is necessary to let off steam and to release tension indicate that watching or participating in violent activities May tend to increase our aggressive feelings and make us more violent while each species has different needs animals too must stand up for themselves they must be able to defend their homes hunt for food and protect their young all these aggressive actions are necessary for survival [Music] and of course limitations on aggression are just as necessary unless they must kill for food most animals live peacefully with one another and share resources without fighting kill or be killed is not the law of the jungle [Music] cooperation is far more common than violence the tasks of grooming food collection home building and caring for the young are often much easier when they are shared living together in groups helps many species to survive [Music] one such group is being closely studied at the Oregon primate Center [Music] here these Japanese macaques live much as they do in the wild scientists can study which of their behavior is inborn and which is learned because they live on the ground where the competition for food is Keen this species of monkey has learned to fight more than most [Music] okay [Music] the large older monkey is particularly aggressive but he is not just a bull he is protecting his food and proving that he is still the strongest the younger monkeys are in turn learning the rules of the group to avoid injury they must not bother the older and stronger animals from this adult monkey's example the young will also learn how best to survive when they grow up humans to change their behavior to meet different circumstances among the warring tribes of New Guinea extreme aggressiveness is often necessary [Music] Modern urban people have very different needs and customs in most situations violence is neither necessary nor desirable but violence is a major problem in our society the frustrations of poverty and Injustice often lead to violence but despite all our destructive acts we like most animals do not seem to have an inborn Killer Instinct true we are capable of more violence than any beast but we are also capable of our cooperation [Music] we have developed into the most dominant species on Earth not because we are the most aggressive but because we are the most flexible and Cooperative more than any other creature we depend on our ability to learn and to change we have seen that we can learn to control aggression
