e e e e hello everybody I'm ski alimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mimer films and uh so showed a little bit of the old tour of the uh back area at the archive and then a little bit of a new tour uh and that's a couple of weeks old but um yeah so the basement um they p the Footers and they're going to pour a new floor uh once they put in some uh some pumps and some other things to help mitigate if the area gets flooded um so that is hopefully going to happen in the next week or so uh we'll see but uh yeah there we go uh this film next film features FDR and he's talking about film kind of at the beginning enjoy the motion pictures that you have just seen tell in graphic form something of what Farmers have been doing over the whole of the United States to make farm life more secure and more comfortable and more satisfying we all know that for many years Farmers have practiced cooperation perhaps more than any other group in the United States more than any other group of our American people they have known what it is to be good neighbors in the earliest Pioneer Days Farm folk used to help each other in husking bees and quilting bees and Home Building and bar raising that Spirit has not been lost even in this day of modern machinery Farmers often ch change work as they call it change work with each other Farm families share that toil and that play their Joys and their sorrows their aspirations and their achievements share them with their neighbors in recent years Farmers have carried this Spirit of neighborliness into broader Fields through the national Farm program the farmers have joined hands to improve their income and conserve their soil gain greater security Safeguard the nation's food supplies Adapt credit facilities to their own needs bring electricity into their homes and protect their markets against the effects of War things on the farm are not as good as they should be as good as they ought to be or as good as they will be the farmers have already accomplished much and as we think back to the days of 1932 and 1933 the days of closed Banks of farm foreclosures on a wholesale scale corn so cheap that it was used for fuel as we think back to those days we realize what a change has been only through their own efforts in cooperating with each other could farmers have brought about such a widespread Improvement and it is well known to all of us that the farmers themselves with each succeeding year vote on what is going to be done about the major crops of the country but with the whole world in turmoil even the United efforts of the farmers themselves would not have been sufficient without the cooperation of the government of the United States since 1933 the rural part of the United States has ceased to be the Forgotten part of the United States since 32 and3 your government as represented by the Congress by the Department of Agriculture yes and I think I can say with some truth the White House itself has recognized the farmers problems and has been determined that Rural America shall not be forgotten that it shall have equality with the rest of the nation since 1933 the government your government has been a friend of the farmer not in promises that were made only to be broken but in real concrete action that gets results your problem now this fall is to make sure that this National Farm program will go on this is a very real problem because the opposition of the minority in the Congress of the United States has consistently voted three or 4 to one against your program in the light of that record you cannot rely on any grudging acceptance of the program that that is now made unless the farm program is in the hands of an Administration that is sincerely and wholeheartedly in sympathy with agriculture it's almost certain first to be weakened and ultimately to be destroyed the choice that farmers make this fall is especially vital in view of the serious World situation and the effect of it on Farmers export markets the welfare of 50 million people who live on farms or who live in communities and towns that serve the Farms their welfare is at stake their welfare depends on meeting that situation courageously and wisely and sympathetically and effectively I am confident that the people of America recognize the gravity of our future and are determined to take whatever steps are needed to safeguard millions of American homes yeah there's the man now what I love coincidentally is this next film is an anagram of FDR this is RFD enjoy [Music] when 34 westbound whistles for our station it's a signal for the local post office to go to work probably the most precious of the cargos carried is the mail our nearest station is Andover in the state of New Jersey the mail comes in the mail goes out and ties the people of the nation together and the nation with the world [Music] each day Ed talpin of the railroad trundles a whole mass of Hope and business of love and law of friendly greetings and news and sometimes disappointment down the street to the post office he brings the stuff for my rural route along with the rest of the mail down from the train it's astonishing the number of letters and the amount of packages that come into Andover but then most people are friendly and like to keep in touch with each other apparently human beings send almost everything you can think of mail if it's big enough to get a stamp on and small enough to be wrapped it seems like anything will go through Ed Hill is the postmaster here at Andover he's a respected member of the federal government I'm a civil servant too got the job by competitive examination held it now for 21 years I enjoy Distributing the mail on the route it's a little like passing the daily history of the place through your hands some days when the load's extra heavy I wonder where everybody gets the time to write so much and read so much of course by now I should know there's no end to the trouble that folks will take to keep themselves posted and other people informed I use my own car the government pays me mileage on it trade it in for a new one about every 18 months we make the circuit six days a week every day but Sunday I'd like to take you with me today have you meet my neighbors and friends not everybody in America is as crowded together as you might have been led to believe I travel over 60 M daily on my route it is one of the services the post office Department extends to the tax [Music] paays this is Andy Carmichael's place it's a good Farm but then Andy's always trying never saw such a man for improving the breed chickens cattle Hogs always writing for information and ideas and always getting them I'll bet there's stuff in this mail coming in from the Department of Agriculture in Washington and the University at New Brunswick and Andy always writes back and tells them what he's found out John Ram has the place next to the car michles when the little flag is up I know there's a pickup to be made Mr and Mrs RAM have a married daughter out west and Mrs Ram gets a letter off to her nearly every day she never has a stamp though don't understand it but she always leaves three pennies in the Box stamping letters is another one of the services of a rural route [Music] Lester Pruden has been asking for a package for at least 10 days today it came his birthday is Tuesday and his mother's going to have quite a time keeping that football a surprise until [Music] then most of the people along my route come down to the box for their meil but today I had an extra special reason for making delivery right to the [Music] door Katie's been a mighty patient little girl slipped off a hay cart early this year when you've had so few Summers it's hard to lose one [Music] it'll be good to see her down at the Box again wouldn't it be wonderful if we could figure out some way to keep all the kids in the world from getting [Music] hurt usually along with the rest of the mail there'll be a love letter or two The Correspondents are generally absent-minded and have a tendency to stop work at the slightest provocation I noticed that some of them even turn a little pale every time my car shows up they always look for a particular handwriting and ignore all the rest of their mail if those youngsters don't grow up and get married pretty soon they'll spend all their money on postage stamps I'm ashamed to admit it but a dog's been carrying on a feud with me for 3 [Music] years so far neither one of us have given an inch if I let that dog have his way he'll bar the roads to the United States mail this is the deck place the boys have been increasing their Dairy herd and naturally had to increase their equipment they've been doing all right they've bred a fine herd and they say the best milking machines are none too good for their cows well men and good machines have always gotten along together in America [Music] the lines go out all over the world Danny Mack has started a forign stamp collection since he began getting letters from Friends abroad Danny's M says he's saving the letters too he may go abroad someday and have a chance to meet his friends face to face so it goes right around the whole route a whole mass of Hope and business of love and law of friendly greetings and news addressed to honorable sir and gentleman to sweetheart and mother and dad and sign respectfully and sincerely and affectionately and even so sometimes people are disappointed Abigail Squires markets her eggs by mail to special clients in the city now the folks buy stamps ensure their shipments get the news send cakes and clothes to their kids away in school another day on the rural delivery route is done it was nice that we could be together for at least one swing around the [Music] circuit we finished right on time you can tell it's near the end of the day when Mr Dennis starts sweeping up so long now I've got to carry my pickups back to Handover if I don't see you again remember you can always get in touch with me by [Music] mail so uh this was part of the USIS which then eventually became the usia and so it's a propaganda film it's a propaganda film for how great uh our post office is in our country and um yeah something that we should be proud of when America was great all right uh this next film is uh it's made by Moma the Museum of Modern Art and I was like what is this film so it's Junior big Leaguers enjoy [Music] school is out and thousands of children leave classrooms behind heading in happy abandon for the playgrounds of of the nation nowadays in the United States country schools as well as City Schools maintain private playgrounds for their importance in the overall educational plan has been given full recognition the favorite game of these boys living in Bronxville a New York suburban community is baseball and here they are mascot and all ready to begin one of their afternoon games the two rival teams are called the Cyclones and the tornado the two captains match to see which team will bat first the tornadoes win and so the Cyclones take their places in the field from the very first inning the Cyclones are on the spot the tornadoes displaying Superior batting power are able to bring in the first run of the game the plate the Cyclones find themselves in is nothing new day after day when it bat they just don't seem to be able to connect properly and when Fielding they seem to muff even the easy catches with the result that their adversaries consistently get the best of the bargain so with 8 and a half of the nine regulation Innings out of the way the score stands at 31 to2 you know in whose favor the Cyclones just can't seem to bring in those runs and without runs you can't win baseball games they started losing in the first half of the first inning and now with two men out all hope is lost for the tornadoes are just one out away from winning the old ball game the Cyclones could conceivably win the game however with a series of hits but with the weakest hitter of the team at bat it doesn't seem likely this player has never connected when under pressure and in spite of all his good intentions today is no exception to that rule strike three and the man is out and so the Cyclones lose the ball game just another in a long series of defeats what this team needs is to master the fundamentals of the game and it may be that the catcher has the solution to the problem he lives near a former retired Major League player the catcher is sure they can get some valuable pointers from him they all go over to see him once there a thousand and one questions pop in the minds of the young players or here as a chance to improve their game after all this major leager has played with all the famous Professionals of the game the retired ball player listens to the history of the Cyclones but not to all nine of the players talking at once the captain of the team speaks for all and makes arrangements with the old timer for a training session the following afternoon from their new trainer the Cyclones learn that the defensive game is based on the close coordination of the seven fielders without such the work of the pitcher which consists in detaining the opposing batter before he can reach first base is made more difficult the pitcher and catcher form what is called the battery and here again coordination must be perfect for example the pitcher should at all times maintain proper position prior to throwing the ball so his opponent on first base won't be able to anticipate the throw and steal second base proper placement and constant watchfulness immobilize the opposing player on first base this in turn helps the catcher prevent opposing players from stealing bases the catcher can also help the pitcher with signals and by offering a good Target for the pitched ball without the closest cooperation between pitcher and catcher not even a major league team could hope to win ball games first base is defended by the first baseman who is one of the four infielders a top-notch first baseman must specialize in catching all kinds of throws from the players protecting the other bases and in order to do this he must be able to quickly assume positions to the right and left of first base since not all throws are perfect at second base the short stop and the second baseman have roughly the same responsibilities these two players are told what a double play consists of they were always surprised when such plays didn't pan out well and now they know the reason why in other words a well thrown and quickly thrown ball enables the second player to make the play to First in plenty of time here the two boys are playing like professionals putting one Runner out between first and second as well as putting out the hitter at first Third Base like first is defended by a baseman the big problem of the third baseman is coping with grounders KN must learn to use both hands in making catches an alert third baseman can nearly always anticipate a butt by employing the right technique he can throw his opponent out and finally we have the outfielders one in left field one in center field and one in right field these are positions of great responsibility they must learn the proper way in which to handle fly balls making a quick throw to whatever base runners are advancing Upon A baseman goes for the ball as soon as the batter hits it and tries to get to First in time to make the put out so we come to the championship game of the school seated there in the bleachers are the families of the various players belonging to the two teams the Cyclones and the tornadoes we're in the ninth and last inning of this exciting ball game the Cyclones are playing like the good team they are with their newly gain baseball knowhow they're a tough team to beat today for nine innings they fought tooth and nail with the tornadoes for the lead but their best hasn't been quite good enough they must produce more runs otherwise it will be the same old [Applause] story and so we come to the last half of the ninth inning the last chance for victory the score is 21-9 the Cyclones must get three more runs to win the game it's not too encouraging a situation either because coming up to bat are three of the team's weakest hitters the leadoff man gets a hit into the Outfield the ball passes between the short stop and the second baseman and he's safe on First with a player on first the grandstand senses a run even the smallest fry realizes the Cyclones have a chance to win it's a thrilling moment the second player up gets a hit and the runner on first advances to Second the opposition Falls into an error and the runner from first to second decides to go on to third he makes it just in time the Cyclones now have a man on first another on Third and no outs the next batter is very sure of himself and he gets a hit this brings in the runner on third scoring for the Cyclones as things now stand the Cyclones have a run a man on First and a man on second and no outs the next batter gets a signal from the bench for a sacrifice play on the very first throw he Taps the ball which Falls almost on top of Home Plate this play enables his team to occupy second and third bases although the hitter is put out on the sacrifice this play puts the Cyclones in a favorable position to get additional runs and it puts the opposition on the spot the next batter gets special instructions from the trainer all is ready and the Pitcher makes the throw it's called strike what is he waiting for doesn't he know there are two Runners on bases he still has two more chances however [Applause] here is the throw and the batter gets a hit the runner on third comes in to tie the game and the runner on second reaches home plate to give the Cyclones the run that wins the game and so the Cyclones with the secrets of baseball that the retired major leager taught them have managed to get three runs in the closing inning of the game defeating their Rivals by the score of 22 to 21 and so the Cyclones are the new baseball champions of [Music] Bronxville so again more propaganda uh I mean you could argue that everything I show on here is some form of propaganda either trying to maintain the status quo trying to sell things you know it's all advertising for something but so I one Museum of Modern Art made this uh huh two I guess the the fun the novelty is that it's Sports commentary for little Leaguers about little Leaguers I guess that's funny I don't know anyways uh this next film straight up advertising uh this is from the prelinger archive which we've been working with and getting more stuff online of theirs this is young man's fancy enjoy [Music] 12:00 and time for the headlines of the latest news of the day according to the latest bulletins how the sandwich is coming mom almost ready they're so easy to do even your dad can put them together and do a Dandy broiling job on them dad kind of fancies himself quite a cook since we got our electric his name again Alexander fips Alexander fips sounds revolting whatever made my dear brother think I'd be interested in a character with a name like that as far as Mr Alexander fips is concerned he'll be left alone strictly alone and with the greatest of [Music] pleasure Judy isn't it about time you got dressed here I'm dressed well that's a matter of opinion go put on a dress before they get here will you right Sally phoned and asked me to go for a swim thought you might like to come along and bring Alex oh thanks but I think Alex is going to be busy is he doing what now look small fry don't give me any trouble all I know is he seeing a man at the Northwest Machine Works on a matter of hydraulics why don't you ask him yourself thanks I will and the circulating air completely dries them my you certainly know all about dishwashers well not all but to tell the truth Mrs Adams anything of mechanical or electrical nature interests me fits in with a hobby of mine dishwashers not exactly Time study figuring out how to do things better in less time and with less work Time study sounds interesting and just going for a swim sound interesting Alex it's a well day for us oh it isn't that Judy and well it'd be great but could we make it some other time I have an appointment this afternoon with an engineer as a matter of fact that's one of the reasons I came home with Bob hey and I'd better hurry too thanks for the lunch Mrs Adams and have a good swim Judy how do you like that he'd rather fiddle with a a hydraulic or something than go swimming with me you heard him say he had a previous engagement dear well I just don't believe it I'll bet Bob put him up to this [Applause] Brothers I'll do the nylon things next Judy okay Mom isn't it wonderful how this washer does all these heavy things imagine pillows beds breads blankets uh-huh Judy it isn't as bad as all that dear sorry mother I was just thinking thinking about what oh you know thinking how awful wash day used to be for you before you had the electric water heater and the washer now wait a minute de and about how much easier it'll be when you get your electric ironer and dryer you don't fool me for one moment young lady what on Earth has happened now it's Alex I mean Mr Alexander fips all he's interested in is mechanics and electricity maybe if I were a a motor or something he'd pay attention to me he's a serious young man Judy your father admires him very much so do I I mean I've practically throwing myself at him trying to make his stay pleasant but does he like to dance or go to the mo no he just wants to talk about logarithms metal stresses heat exchanges I don't know what all from now on as far as I'm concerned he's just a snule and what may I ask is a snule something to be left strictly [Music] alone and take engineering electrical mechanical most any kind think of what still can be done in the field of research for new ways of doing things well for the generation of power the distribution of power and the design of new machines why Mr Adams some of those large generators I've seen have the rhythm of music music Alex do you like music Alex was speaking about the music of Machinery Judy oh I'm sorry Dad but I do like like music very much SW the records are right in the cabinet was it okay with you sir sure kids go ahead well thank you pick something groovy Alex [Music] my favorite record the rhythm of big [Music] generators these berries are simply Divine and they'll taste even more Divine next winter if there are any left for the freezer remember what it was like Judy before we got the freezing sure do look at that isn't it beautiful Beres corn on the cob peaches peas lime of beans meat cakes pies oh it's dreamy the money we save is pretty dreamy too there it is is practically ready to put on the table yep pretty dreamy mother yeah do you think it would be all right if I went to the dance tomorrow night with Eddie Brown oh would he ask you well he hasn't yet exactly Alex has asked me to go to a stuffy old lecture with him you said you'd go you said we should do everything to make us day Pleasant but I'd still rather go to the dance Judy if you promised Alex you'd go to the lecture with him you go to the lecture with him and that's all there is to it well all right but he sure gives me the Reds gives you the what burns me up makes me mad oh is there anything else I can do mother not for now dear thanks for the help with the berries strictly a snap besides they're good oh Judy I almost forgot Sally phone okay Mom see you later gives me the red really anyway that's what Johnny said tee Bry towels are soft and fluffy you can say that again Jeepers these towels are soft and fluffy all right all right but they never get this soft and fluffy flapping on a clothes line must be a relief not to hang out clothes anymore watch this is Mother any day can be washed day now my electric dryer saves me miles of walking and tons of carrying in a year no kidding though this little old dryer sure gets things done in a hurry man oh man men that's what I'm through with or at least one man in particular Alexander fips oh what's with you well at first I thought he was real gone really a big then for a while I thought my dear brother just made up all this stuff about Alex being a bookworm but now I find out he really is a character well it isn't the first time a big wheel turned out to be just a hubcap and while you are Wheeling around at the dance I'll be sitting out a lecture with a hub cat a lecture about mushrooms there must be some mechanical problem connected with the lecture if Alex wants to [Music] go growing mushrooms under artificial conditions well after all the lecture may be very interesting yes Mother wishes mechanical problems Time study food what did you say mother judie I have an idea yes I remember your father the trouble I had with him seemed as if nothing I did with inter him until until what mother until I discovered how much he enjoyed good food oh the way to a man's heart Judy oh mother that's corny Everyone likes good food I know dear but I'm thinking of something else too it'll take a little conspiracy conspiracy a nice little conspiracy for a nice young man you remember I decided not to go to the Garden Club dinner tomorrow night because of Alexander's visit well I've changed my mind I'm going and you can find out for yourself whether mother knows best now here's what we'll do need anything before I leave Jerry I don't think so mother now how long did you say it would take this dinner to cook let's see your dinner should cook for an hour and a half at 350° wait a sec sweetie let me make with the mathematics I'm going to dash over to Sally she's going to sit my hair it's almost 3:00 now you will eat at 6:30 and your dinner takes an hour and a half to cook let me see set the timer to stop cooking at 6:30 and to cook for an hour and a half then I flip the set switch so it'll go on automatically turn the temperature dial to 350 then I'm off to Sally's okay absolutely right oh glad I remembered to take the ham out of the freezer this morning I wish you weren't going out do you think everything will be all right of course darling it lovely now don't you worry this isn't the first meal you've cooked you know no but it's the first meal I ever cooked for Alex if I know Alex he'll be pleasantly surprised and impressed I have to hurry dear I have things to do and what's a four-letter word for nuisance what four-letter word for nuisance oh that's easy j u d y well I'm off where you going mom can we give you a lift Mrs Adams no thanks boys I don't know just what time I'll be back tonight so I'm taking the card tonight what about dinner oh Judy's taking care of that Judy my Judy can't even boil water without burning it hey maybe we' better get on a hamburger Harry's at least we'll get something to eat go right ahead but you'll be sorry why I wouldn't think of missing one of Judy's dinners thank you Alex you shouldn't tease her so dear oh Mom I was only needly it well don't overdo it you'll give her the [Music] Reds well that sounds interesting Alex you know mushrooms are big favorites of mine well as I understand it there's quite an air conditioning problem involved oh I don't think that would be too much of a problem you know what oh dear well you can always give it a try Mr Adams oh me everything will be ruined oh I don't know what I'll do oh excuse me sir lady in distress sure trouble cheoy can I help it's the mixer it just won't work let me take a look there we are what slipped out that's all how do you suppose that happened just one of those things first thing you do when an appliance doesn't work is find out if it's plugged in that's the trouble most of the time is that what time study is no but are you interested in Time study mother was telling me that you oh they are it's a hobby of mine I'd love to hear about it oh take your kitchen ever noticed any anything about it well there's the electric range the electric sink with garbage disposer and dishwasher and the refrigerator the freezer exactly all wonderful helps now here's something you probably never thought about Judy a kitchen today is like a factory in a lot of ways well the product can only be good if the right tools are used so modern factories use the best Machinery that money can buy as a result the work is done faster better and easier just as it is in a modern kitchen see what I me oh yes and you're so smart about all these things not really Judy it's just that I'm interested and like to make a study of them well now here's another thing not only the best tools important but everything connected with their use is taken into consideration see how they're placed just like machines in our Factory straight line production well they're not set this way just for looks they're placed this way for a definite purpose to save work time and unnecessary steps golly I'm so impressed it's called time and motion study come here take your home freezer full of fresh frozen foods well there's a definite saving of time and money and right next to it the refrigerator keep dayto Day food in perfect freshness and the dishwasher now there's a machine that does away with a chore that everybody hates and again right next to it the garbage disposer very convenient the electric range practically an automatic cook right and only a few steps from where the food is kept notice how it all adds up to one important thing what consideration for the housewife even that mixer's a big work saer oh God my wh cream imagine having to do that the hard way by hand Alex I hope you brought your appetite with you oh I certainly did Sir the table looks left them something about growing mushrooms under artificial conditions I might find out how to grow them in the basement say I could move your lundry oh no you don't uh-uh really Harry This Is the End [Music] of course it was Jam handy of course uh so that film would have been shown uh maybe in a theater uh but chances are it would be uh either a an appliance company or a uh Power Company uh that would show the film invite U families Housewives uh to talk about the modern conveniences and the idea is that instead of it just being a hard cell it's like look here's the average American family and look you know they're living their lives and there's this little light sitcom going on but look how um uh electric appliances have made their lives easier so they can pursue the things that they want and I like that uh they mentioned the work motion studies time motion studies because we have shown some of those we've shown some of the The Silent Ones of people doing the same repetitive task over and over and over again and um you know coming up trying to come up with ideas to make it more efficient use of your uh body in motion uh in regards to whatever but hey I appreciate you you guys tuning in today it uh wonderful nice sunny day today um I hope everybody has a great weekend and if you like what you saw please consider a couple of things one hit the thumbs up or the like button uh even if you've done it recently do it again doesn't hurt doesn't cost nothing uh and it helps us uh because I think YouTube uses that as some sort of metric to judge us and to present us to more eyeballs and that's what we like we like your eyeballs but we like more eyeballs because we love showing these films to as many people as we can uh the other thing you can do is watch other videos that we've posted online we have been doing 24 films a day one an hour and our goal is to hit 10,000 films and we are over 9,000 right now so go go go uh another way you can support us is financially by either using the super thanks button to float us some cash or go to ko-fi.com avgeeks or patreon.com avgeeks those are other great ways to support us but just showing up watching commenting those are great ways to support us and we are very much grateful for you um and uh everybody please have a great weekend a restful weekend and we will see you on Monday I can't believe it's
