e e e e e hi everybody this is Skip Alzheimer welcome to the avgeeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 mm films and um we're outside cuz it's really nice outside and I have to get some vitamin D uh naturally because I spent a lot of time inside in the dark and um so I have to take advantage of this and yeah but it was so bright that now I have an umbrella over my head so I could actually see the screen um all right uh so yesterday I was talking about the fact that I had a bunch of 16 that I've been scanning uh unfortunately we can't scan them live because the scanner we have doesn't have a way to do that uh it doesn't actually capture the sound live it actually interprets the optical soundtrack so um anyways so I'm periodically scanning stuff and then we get to watch it uh later so here is a series of vignettes um this is from that uh Christian Library I think it's called Church films was the name of it but this is uh social encounters and uh each one of them has uh a discussion point and I think this is meant for adult uh Sunday schools enjoy the loveliest thing about a woman [Music] is that she is a person we have learned to Fly Like a Bird swim like a [Applause] fish even reach for the moon when will we learn to walk upon the Earth like a man [Music] and God said let us make man to our own image and likeness [Music] [Music] what are you okay [Music] what have we done to God's image was that you who passed by hey watch this Bud all right all right hey Mr I'm sorry I overshot the line your mind moving this piece of junk back across the white line I can't move it back the cars are behind me oh if you don't know how to drive this stupid thing what are you doing in it anyhow come on you got shoes take a walk you get a license to driver thing a five and Di hey what are you doing St free country ain't [Applause] [Music] it sir I'm terribly sorry I didn't mean to yell at you I'm sorry oh well it was my fault no no no it was all my fault it up come on I'll give you a ride [Music] the doctor said it's still too early oh but I feel so I wish mother would come hope she's married oh she's going to be sick in here I hate elevators come on come on let's get out of here clown scared poor thing the first one which would you say was This Woman's [Music] neighbor this is our choice offering in this neighborhood by the way Miss Wilson the Howards may show the house fine come in we can start back here this place has a fabulous patio as you can see it's large and bright and has a connecting bathroom well what do you think folks what do you say honey oh Jack I like it how much of a deposit would you like all 500 is fine by the way are there any uh negro families in this neighborhood no sir you don't have to worry about any of them here you mean this is a restricted neighborhood absolutely I'm afraid we've changed our mind so this was packaged as a a series called social encounters and you know uh there's a teacher guide that basically says you know questions to ask um but it is possible that these could have been public service announcements too uh but they they're missing that kind of key thing at the end which is who's sponsoring it it does have that kind of feel of the um Church of latterday saints things from the late '70s and early 80s but um yeah it does have that that short little PSA feel this is the shest test it's so wonderful so these all these films uh that I'm showing um for the next couple of films uh were from this batch that I got of like 1,400 films from um sou from Northern Iowa University from B bement films which is an archive in New Mexico which had some educational stuff but also had the religious stuff um and I think this was from Northern Iowa enjoy [Music] oh n [Music] w w [Music] how F what did I do for you oh it's down there [Music] oh [Music] no well I'm afraid it's not going to do [Music] sh [Music] he [Music] la [Music] w o [Music] [Applause] w [Music] you fill it up [Music] [Music] n [Music] [Music] [Music] he oh [Music] really you end end with a banjo so that last scene or that towards the end where uh she's going through this These Blueprints and there's this weird kind of smoke like she's in some sort of heaven was so surreal um wonderful film and it kind of speaks to what changed what has changed uh in a positive way as far as accessibility and as some of you have me mentioned in the comments it's not for people who just have phys uh like permanent physical handicaps but also people who have broken their legs or uh other ways that they're having difficulties uh these all these things help all right uh we're going to go from one uh film with no narration to another film with no narration and I'm very excited about this one because it features hippies uh and it's religious enjoy [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] this house is made of [Applause] glass come inside watch [Applause] it we're storing for wines St coming some and will no need to hide in a house of [Applause] glass love can be seen and it's such a g [Applause] [Music] come inside H the winter day come ins and with us play no need to hide in a house of glad love can be seen and it's such a g [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] in [Applause] [Music] the time is the time is the time is [Music] in our house of Cl love can be seen and it's such a g [Applause] [Music] [Music] the time is the time is the [Applause] G [Music] [Music] St [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] tell of widespread hunger civil chaos and thousands of unburied bodies andk by and 40 armored vehicles today stag its biggest incursion of Arab territory small people were executed in Baghdad this morning State Department acknowledges that the US made new proposals to Red China when the two sides met in Warsaw yesterday but no one is saying what those proposals were [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] time time time time the time [Music] love can be seen and it's such a [Applause] g on a winter day and with us YY no need to hide in a house of [Music] Cl love can be seen and it's such a [Music] a [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] all right um that's the third film that that's uh that's going to be in a show I'm going to do an upcoming show live somewhere and it's going to be Jesus says huh she says [Music] what wow that was glorious this is why we collect and show films so I'm happy that we discovered that film together all right you asked for it here's the Joker uh this was men mentioned in another film that we showed a couple of weeks ago and I finally found the film it's part of the prelinger collection and it's not online anywhere except I just put it online uh but here it is um enjoy [Music] Pass open I'll see cards me the next three I'll play these I have to check I got one I'll see you and uh bet the works it's too steep for me oh call 3 7 8 nine and the Joker a hold it Joe boy an honest Ace High flush and a lady to go with it your friend The Joker just got you in trouble and I'll be done should I tell him or you why he's learning a come on what's the gag learning what look you just bet your shirt cuz you had the Joker right well sure I made my flush with it wouldn't you with the joker not us and we already did both of us and never again brother never [Music] [Applause] again that's okay fellas once is enough for me [Applause] [Applause] [Music] a steel fabricating plant where no crews are working is a quiet place safe and sound no lifts swinging overhead no hot rivets flying through the air no buggies moving no wheels turning no chips flying officially there's only one kind of job being done and it's a quiet one but unofficially in every plant everywhere there's another kind of job being done and the guy who does it works 24 hours a day this eager Insidious fellow is no friend of anybody's he doesn't take time out for lunch not even a coffee break he belongs to no Union he's on nobody's payroll you've heard of impossible accidents he's the guy who makes imposs he's the jok [Music] last time that's my specialty and it looks like this is going to be one hell of a good day today I've been checking this meal all night and with the help of a couple of PSIs I figure today's a great day for a couple of bone busting limb crushing last time accidents and you know what that means stretches pain pills confusion compensation checks crutches canes wheelchairs all these accident business is just one laugh after another but it ain't easy people are too safety conscious you got to work on them sometimes it takes years and lots of psychology hang around you might learn a few things now the quiet hours are over men everywhere are returning to work every new day begins as a good day yet every day some men somewhere get hurt for no apparent reason is it fate just bad luck this is Fred Stanton whose job is handling material out in the receiving yard Fred's a man who keeps his mind on his job he's a veteran a pro there's nothing special about Fred he just wants to get home to the family in good shape every night so he's learned the safety rules that apply to him and he follows them to the letter he pays attention to Crane signals makes sure of his blocking always stands clear of the load [Music] it won't be easy for the Joker to get friend not without plenty of help yeah but today I got help hiy boy nice fell lady just my kind of guy not careless you understand just kind of casual and a good boy listens to me [Laughter] too now a man wouldn't ordinarily even consider adding a lift to a pile like this and Eddie usually would be no exception hey why crack your brain over a little problem like this you got real ones like remember what that flat mouth wife of yours said at breakfast why can't you be like other men can't you be like Jane's husband she gets a new dress every week and I haven't had a new dress for years go on Edie you ain't got all day a little extra blocking will be good enough [Music] that's the way Eddy that's the way [Music] yes that's the way Eddie the way to set a booby trap for a friend [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] when Fred eventually comes back to work he won't be the man he used to be he'll take any job he's offered because any income is good when you have the debts that Fred will be piling up and as for Eddie well next time it might be his [Music] turn a Daydreamer like Eddie is an easy Mark for the Joker [Music] if a man lets himself get distracted when he's working with a crane he might just put the chains too close to the end of a beam and if the crane operator isn't on the [Music] ball maybe he'll make a leaning boy trap or a topheavy pile with an oversized beam or maybe many tons of steel resting on unsupported blocking [Applause] yes there are plenty of opportunities for the Joker in the receiving yard or any place that men are handling steel how's that for getting a day off to a good start you know how much lost time I'm writing up on Fred 300 days oh I'm going to keep that Eddie around for a while he's a big help getting a guy's mind off his job that's that's my system distraction you got to be some kind of screw ball to want to hurt yourself or your buddies but you got to be only human to Daydream on the job and all of these guys are only human now you take some of those guys back there in pre-assembly there's one of my favorite places come on I'll show you [Applause] [Music] hey there's hoe Smith he's what they call a materials Handler been hooking plates like that for seven years without a slip but I never give up remember the secret is distraction watch this how ho how's the bowling team doing these days I hear your boys are going for the championship tonight and that you're top man on the team that's a mighty good right hand you got there Howie a mighty fine right hand I did it I did it after all those years boy what a jump last time you bet you I'm proud of this one and I got a right to me you got to keep your eyes open these days not everybody would have spotted how he wasn't wearing Safety Shoes what a day I got going huh oh lost time accident we love those [Applause] [Music] cranes one of the Joker's favorite wrinkles is to get a man so preoccupied that he fails to notice that the crane isn't directly above the lift and forgets he's on the hospital side when he gives the signal to hoist it's the kind of mistake you won't get a chance to make [Music] [Applause] twice far more routine for the Joker are injuries to hands and fingers caused by pinch points but which might be better described as mangle [Applause] points or amputation points oh so what's a couple of fingers you don't need two good hands anyway the way I see it one hands all your need to go over all those bills you won't be able to pay out of your compensation check sure one hand's plenty to do most anything even to crumple up that last empty pack because you can't waste money on a luxury like cigarettes so go ahead fellas take a little chance now and then when you're working with a crane you're luck hold sure it will you know I came up in this business when the only safety motto you ever heard was don't bleed on the steel sentimental wasn't it well let all change now they got these safety guys crawling all over the place everywhere you look they got these crazy safety posters slogans M it's enough to drive you nuts I know mind admitting to you it's made my job a whole lot tougher but that's the way the bone crunches I do my best I still get results you give me just one tiny opening and I'm in there trying huh I think I see Jim Kirby down there I wonder if he's ready to play py yet you know Jim operates a punch press real safety conscious always wear safety glasses well it's worth a [Applause] try hey Jim how's that boy of yours still sick oh I hope it's nothing serious Jim so there are no side shields on those glasses Jim so what they're plenty safe that's it [Music] J oh I didn't see what happened neither did Jim Kirby he learned the hard way that there are no little compromises with safety all a flying chip of Steel ever needs is a small opening lost time plenty lost eye well let's hope not sometimes the Joker doesn't have to work so hard to get a man to injure his eye a few months ago for instance one man was driving a pin through the splice plate of a girder with a sledge a chip from the pin sliced across his left eye how about safety glasses they were in his pocket why should a guy wear safety glasses anyway they're heavy on the nose and anyway nothing's ever going to happen to your baby blues not a chance now there's another angle on this accident business I ain't told you about yet feet my favorite part of the human anatomy I got 2 million ways ie handing fee matter of fact I'm starting down right now to try one of my standard gags come [Music] on main floor all out for fit rived and welded [Music] here's my pigeon Bob Davis a bouncy Bachelor just takes a little sunshine and a warm breeze to set him up hi above how's that nice weather suit you get you thinking about better things h [Music] hey boy you do all right just don't let your work take your mind off of [Music] her the Joker has a way sometimes of being two places at once here's a friend of Bobs setting up to G some plates in the well shop maybe the pleasant day is distracted him too and that's why he doesn't keep that cable out of the aisle mark up another one for the Joker but the Joker didn't have to get Bob Davis on a welding cable he could have used this scrap bucket thoughtlessly placed in the aisle these metal bands might have been even better these beans sticking out into the walking area or a patch of broken concrete like this which The Joker has kept from the front office or even one loose boat like this which not long ago sidelined a man for six lost time days with a bruised ankle and blood poisoning one sure thing about poor housekeeping it's a mighty big help for the Joker here's another way the Joker gets a man the long [Applause] shortcut the last man who fell for this one suffered severe lacerations of the abdomen lost time 30 [Music] days The Joker can distract a man until his feet wander into some d dangerous places lost time 21 days Safety Shoes saved the toes lost time 42 days fractured metatarso again the steel fell only a few [Music] inches but if a man really wants to cater to the Joker all he has to do is wear ordinary non-safety shoes then as one man learned to his sorrow it takes only a three lb socket and bit to fracture vital small bones in a foot 3 lb but 42 days of lost time oh these patsies who don't wear safety shoes how I love them but I got to warn you guys they've come out with a new Safety Shoe that I want you to steer clear of they call it the metatarsal shoe protects these little bones here between the ankle and the toes makes it almost impossible to get at your feet but I ain't worried I'll start an ay way don't buy those medle shoes you can spend the money on something better like me [Music] [Laughter] crutches you know sometimes for variety I let Material Handling go for a day or two and then I work on finishing operations I'll show [Music] you now take grinding wheels without their guards oh and the best things since hand grenades and remas woo when I get a guy to daydreaming on one of these like riding the tailand of a [Laughter] [Music] tornado the tail end of a tornado but not if the Joker doesn't make a man careless the re deserves respect it's going to turn something it's either going to turn the bit or the handle you get your choice the best insurance against a reer gone wild is an anchored safety bar steel is tougher than bone better let it take the tough knucks the reamer is a buddy system machine both men must keep a good hold on the handle or it's goodbye buddy let your attention slip when you're reaming and a hand slip down onto that whirling bit here's an idea The Joker likes to encourage helps gain good leverage and maybe lose a good finger it's pure luck this man still has five fingers he can get a new glove the portable grinder a handy machine in this business and a big favorite with the [Applause] joker a portable grinder left lying on the floor is likely to be hit by any number of falling objects looks okay it usually will here's a brand new grinding wheel that was accidentally dropped it looks okay too now in slow motion watch what happens when it's run up to speed in a test [Music] machine not long ago that kind of shrapnel gave one man compound fractures of the right ankle and upper left leg lost time 270 days ah now here's one that's given the Joker a lot of laughs doing one thing and thinking of another of course the machine won't trip unless the operator starts it himself but that's [Music] easy I had all two fingers sticking about that new car he's planning to buy that's all it takes just a little distraction you know there ain't a plan in this whole operation where I ain't got something going for me I get guys around here and the main shop at Ambridge the plate shop at Orange every place and any place in the shop too for instance every once in a while I even get me a painter paint is Slippery When Wet painters know that but so does the [Music] Joker and Painters as this man is discovering the hard way have Material Handling hazards of Their Own no safety is shoes result plenty of Agony and 60 days lost time every once in a while the Joker gets himself a man out in the loading area too not long ago a worker was removing chains from a member which had just been landed onto skids The Joker distracted him he forgot to clear the hooks under the member and attach them to the ring before signaling the cranman [Music] to tell tell the truth I don't like it end that way what are you going to do Steel's heavy you can't always tell what's going to happen well that ain't my problem my problem my biggest one is working on guys who won't go along you see with a lot of these American Bridge guys safety is an attitude take Tom Daniels for instance that guy's as stubborn as a mule I'm never been able to get him distracted just look at that clean aisle he's working in disgusting he's even got a threshold plate over that welding cable and met a tsle shoes it's enough to make you sick hey Tom I hear you going hunting this weekend bet you're looking forward to that t old kid hey Tom look it look it bet you'd like to have a new outboard wouldn't [Music] you okay Tom let's hurry this job up huh come on let's swing her along there cut out all this slow cautious stuff come on Tom all right you square guys like Tom Daniels burn me always keeping their minds on what they're doing but I ain't had a bad day at that four out of five sometimes though it goes the other way I get maybe two three solid months a guys like Daniels then it gets pretty discouraging but I don't give up I told you this accident business takes a lot of brains it sure does but sometimes it takes something more patience or would you believe it I've had to wait around 15 or 20 years for some guys to play Psy for me but I can wait time's on my side when a guy does a job long enough he gets to think and he's accident proof he starts taking little shortcuts or he just forgets and nothing happens they get right and then comes the day I get them to distracted just for a second it's all the time it takes and PS they're mine they thought they were accident proof what panies now how about you old buddy are you accident proof you want a bet see you around [Music] I can check that gear in a minute so don't touch anything [Music] okay hey get that from there [Music] no hey turn it over what if it bumped that control by accident you'd be minc meat by now what have I told you you don't work on equipment when the engine's running well I told him not to touch anything all right I guess I wasn't thinking yo you weren't thinking you mean you'll work on engines and machinery and not think of your own personal safety here shake hands with danger shake hands with danger meet a man you ought to know I used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger Joe [Music] I was young and feisty never did things by the book just let me get my T box and I'll take myself a look I climbed up on a doer with my mechanic's Pride said you can keep it running friend while I poke around inside shake hands with danger meet a guy you watch now I used to laugh at safety now they call me three finger Joe although I learned a lesson I forgot it soon enough the Nicks and burns and scratches showed the young ones I was tough till another morning I was grinding on some steel my other hand got careless and fed my skin into the wheel shake hands with danger step right up and say hello grinding wheels in metal are what made me three finger [Music] jaill I've seen mechanics burning and I've seen them take a fall just to save themselves a minute I've seen them lose it all I've watched them courting trouble seen them take a chance and lose they get careless for a moment and spend a lifetime with the Blues and [Music] [Applause] [Music] shake with [Music] danger with danger she with you around and [Music] shake hands with d [Music] around around [Music] inside around inside shake hands the danger around inside [Music] shake hands with danger and some friends I Used to Know compared to them I'm lucky to be just three finger [Music] [Laughter] Joe yes of course I had to play that um but but man The Joker was so great uh so edcom is the company that made that film for American steel or or United States Steel um and uh edcom is what originally was highway safety films so um as potentially gory as this was this is nothing compared to other films that they originally released where they would just show uh amateurly shot footage of uh dead people being pulled out of uh wrecked cars so um yeah and old radios I think mentioned that this that the Joker mentioned a little bit in uh hell's Highway and um which is a story of Highway Safety films uh but thanks for watching today very much appreciate your eyeballs and your comments um if you like what you saw hit the thumbs up up hit the like subscribe we just broke 150,000 subscribers which is great and I'm hoping that most of you are that uh we also broke uh 9,000 films online our goal is to hit 10,000 by March uh maybe by the middle or end of March um we have a lot of content and I'm finding stuff from the pringer archive that had not been uploaded uh to even internet archive so this this is new stuff that we're seeing um and so I hope you're excited by that uh if you happen to be in Raleigh uh tomorrow I'm doing a live screening at DHL library and what that means is I'll be there live with an expert and we will talk about awkward love films uh love is awkward until it isn't and so these films kind of captivate capture that um and there's certainly things that we've shown on this streaming show before well thanks for tuning in and we will see you tomorrow maybe I'll see you live I think it's at 4:30 uh at dhill library on the first floor next to the coffee shop there they call it the Fishbowl Forum um so thanks
