e for H that was weird like it shouldn't have ended that early um yeah I'm not sure what's going on there um anyways uh so I'm two minutes early again because of technical problems I try new things and they um blow up in your face I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimet films and what I was watching here was uh an experiment that I did yesterday where I put a 35mm film strip on uh our scan scanner that scans 35 and scanned each frame separately then I was supposed to play it back to you but I don't know why it crapped out um I think it's OBS might kind of crapped out but it should have been 60 frames I don't know did it get to an end did you see a the end uh please mention in the comments while I try to diagnose this um I don't want to start early yet but I should say that uh tonight uh you can see it on 16 um we are showing 16 mm films uh at the Alamo it's called the night of bad decisions um so it's films where people are trying to make decisions and some of them are really bad uh and some of them are good and then I'll have the audience pick make decisions on which film they want to watch um it'll be loads of fun hope to see you there uh 6:30 Alamo Raleigh all the tickets are almost gone but this is what I recommend is if you're in town wait uh about an hour before and you'll see some people cancel they just can't make it so um you can often get tickets that way all right it's 1:00 Tred to do something new didn't work we'll try again tomorrow here are animals hatch from eggs enjoy [Music] eggs when I was a very little boy I used to go with my mother when she shopped for eggs and because I saw so many eggs I thought I knew a lot about them you couldn't tell me anything about eggs that I didn't already know for instance I knew that eggs were white or sometimes Brown and I knew that they were laid by chickens and I knew that there had to be a rooster a father chicken to fertilize the eggs if babies were going to grow inside and hatch from them that was how they got got to be more chickens in the world that was what I knew about eggs and I thought it was all there was to know but then I met a boy who told me that chickens weren't just chickens they were Birds something like the birds that fly through the air and I thought that if chickens hatch from eggs then all the other kinds of birds must hatch from eggs too so I watched birds and I read books about birds and I learned a lot about them the same way that chickens hatch from big white or brown eggs robins hatch from little blue eggs Ducks hatch from lighter colored eggs and seagulls from green eggs with spots Meadow Larks hatched from whitish eggs with red spots and plovers from whitish eggs with gray spots sandpipers from Little eggs and ostriches from very big eggs and then one day I asked my mother if all birds lay eggs and she told me that only the motherb bird the female lays them before they're laid the father bird the male fertilizes them inside an egg a baby bird starts out as a very small thing that doesn't look like a bird at all the baby grows using the egg yolk as its food then in time it breaks out of its shell it lives and in a while it becomes a grown-up adult bird that was what I learned about eggs and for a long time I thought it was all there was to know but then I met a girl who told me that birds aren't the only animals that hatch from eggs she said that a lot of snakes and lizards and animals like that hatched from eggs too well I didn't know about that so I watched lizards and snakes and I read books about them and I learned a lot about them most snakes lay eggs eggs with shells something like bird's eggs and baby snakes hatch from them lizards lay eggs too and so do turtles and they look like chicken's eggs except that the shells are much softer and of course baby turtles hatch from them anyway that was what I learned about eggs and for a long time I thought I was kind of an egg expert but then my teacher got some pets for our classroom frogs now I knew a mother frog wasn't a bird and I knew it wasn't a snake or that kind of animal so it couldn't lay eggs but it did it laid them underwater and the father frog stayed close by to fertilize the eggs well they were very little eggs all stuck together and they didn't have hard shells like the eggs I already knew about but they were eggs and the mother frog didn't sit on them or watch over them but after a long while they hatched well the babies didn't look like birds snakes or Lizards but they didn't look like frogs either and I learned that some animals that hatch from eggs look different from their mothers and fathers but they eat and grow and in a while they begin to look like their mothers and fathers and so I read books and I learned that's how it is with frogs and that's how it is with another kind of animal called salamanders when salamander eggs hatch the babies look different from grown-up animals so then I thought I knew everything there was to know about eggs my head was full of things about eggs I thought I could tell people anything about eggs that was before I met our neighbor and he showed me his fish his fish had laid eggs they looked something like frog eggs and our neighbor told me that nearly all fish come from eggs little fish and fish bowls and big fish that swim in lakes rivers and oceans well there sure were plenty of animals that hatched from eggs I thought there were fish there were snakes and animals like that frogs and animals like that and there were birds and I thought I knew about all of them but then I met a farmer who had bees and he told me that bees these were insects and they kept their eggs in their beehives well I didn't know they hatched from eggs so I watched insects and I read books about insects and I learned a lot about them in every beehive only one female the queen bee lays eggs in the honeycomb well bees lay eggs in their hives and mosquitoes lay eggs on water grasshoppers lay eggs that are brown and many ants lay eggs that are white ants are like bees only the queen lays the eggs some moths lay their eggs on twigs and leaves and some flies lay theirs on garbage or decaying stuff bull weevils lay their eggs in little holes they make in cotton plants and walking sticks those little insects that look like sticks lay theirs on bushes or trees a walking stick lays tiny eggs about the size of a pin head and when one hatches a baby walking stick looks like a grown-up walking stick but not all insects are like that a baby fly is a tiny wormlike animal that looks very different from a grown-up fly and baby mosquitoes swimming in the water don't look much like grown-up mosquitoes that can fly and who would imagine that an animal that looks like this when it is very young would grow to be a moth but I knew about them by then I knew a lot about animals that hatched from eggs and the kinds of eggs they hatch from and I still remember it now when I'm grown up but you know just yesterday I met a man who told me about another kind of animal that hatches from an egg a platypus it lives in Australia someday I'm going to watch a platypus I've already started to read books about it and I'll find out I'll find out everything there is to know about animals that hatch from [Music] eggs so the narrator is he kind of had himself as a character in the film which was kind of interesting um I haven't seen uh that in most other films where uh especially science films biology films but there you go okay uh I'm just going to say off the bat uh the first 10 seconds 15 seconds 20 seconds of this film uh is basically a seizure inducer it I don't know somebody was like oh it can do this really clever thing but it's like oh my God so it's super stroby super stroby but as soon as we get to when they're they're talking the strobe is over but yeah this is it's like who in our class has epilepsy and we don't know yet let's find out uh being in a darken room and seeing this so look away if you are averse to strobing effects because this is crazy stroby enjoy [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] sure shape is the outline or silhouette of something objects in nature are all kinds of different shapes [Music] all shapes can be reduced to three basic [Music] kinds the first basic shape the rectangle can be any size [Music] in art rectangular shapes don't have to be exact in nature lots of things have a rectangular [Music] feeling many man made objects are also [Music] rectangular it's fun just to play around with rectangles and see what you can make of them what you make doesn't have to look like anything it can just look like what it is shapes put together in a way that pleases you [Music] all through history artists have used rectangular shapes at first it may be hard to see the rectangles [Music] the triangle the second basic shape what are some triangular shapes we find in nature there are many man-made triangular shapes too what are some things you can create using triangles he [Music] [Applause] [Music] the Triangular shape is used in many paintings [Music] here's the third and final basic shape the circle and variations on the circle where can you find circles in nature [Music] how about man-made circular objects [Music] using circular shapes you can make lots of things [Music] see any circles in this painting circles help to hold everything in the picture together [Music] all three basic shapes can be [Music] combined can you see two of them here all three shapes are here see them it helps to see what shapes go together to make up the whole object you can create many different things using the three basic shapes [Music] here's how one artist put the shapes together can you see the shapes in this [Music] painting how about this [Music] one can you see how the three basic shapes are used together in this painting [Music] I mean did we really need the strobing lights I mean so there's this whole thing called flicker films which is uh a bunch of experimental filmmakers made in the 50s and 60s and 7s and that's appropriate cuz you know that you're ready for that but come on right in the middle of a it doesn't really help the explanation what's going on I I just wish things were simpler it was a simpler time that's what I want simpler time uh this film talks about that enjoy for [Music] as Pioneer communities grew and prospered and the settlers realized that the first desperate struggle for survival was over thoughts and efforts turned to community buildings and projects to serve the educational and cult natural needs of the people churches and schools were the first Community buildings erected and in many villages one building served as both church and school and occasionally one man was both Pastor and school Master to the children growing up in the early Villages and the surrounding Farms seed time and harvest time overshadowed formal classroom lessons everything that a child did from the time of rising at dawn to bedtime at sundown was an important part of his education every hand was needed at home at busy times of the year and the school year had to adjust to the needs of the [Music] land the school Schoolhouse was built with Community labor and materials and could be of logs planks stone or brick the large yard or common that surrounded the building rang with the shouts of the students at play a rope which hung through a hole in the ceiling rang the great Bell on the roof and called the children to classes they were usually two entrances one for the boys and one for the girls that opened into two small cloak rooms [Music] good Scholars considered it an honor to ring the bell refill the wood box fill the water pil or stoke the fire parents of the students supplied wood for the stove and lodgings for the teacher discipline was strict but teachers were poorly trained and had to use the Birch Rod often to keep the attention of their students they attempted to teach all and classes in one room and many of the students were young adults when they finished their education slates and slate pencils were the standard writing equipment and every lesson was copied and memorized for every few minutes the students had to wipe off their slate in order to use it again teaching AIDS were scarce a few maps and books a globe a pointer or other articles that were available were used to illustrate [Music] lessons in the school ink and paper were in short supply only the senior students were given lessons in penmanship the teacher carefully distributed ink paper and the quill pens which were made from a feather with a sharpened tip when it was time to dismiss the students for the day homework was not assigned because the teacher was aware the children had many chores to keep them busy at home if a student had misbehaved during the day he might be given homework in this way his parents knew of his behavior lunches were packed in baskets or pales that were taken home to be refilled for the following day Recreation was simple and often spontaneous in a Pioneer community in an era when everyone of every age was affected by the success or failure of the Harvest the entire Community assisted with common needs and problems any project that required more than one set of hands became a bee [Music] bees were used for every type of work at every season of the year but the best loved bee among the women was for quilting quilts were devised originally because of grim economic need but they soon developed a social aspect as a young woman approached marriage her hope chest or doy chest was filled with the Linens that she would need in her new home these Linens were all made by hand as were coverlets and quilts when a quilt was ready to be finished six or seven guests were invited to a quilting [Music] bee to make the quilting easier and to strengthen the Stitches the thread was rubbed with beeswax before using the conversation of the Quilters ranged over the news of the country side as their fingers darted up and down there was a good deal of friendly competition in workmanship and as the women talked they kept watch over their neighbor stitches mentally comparing them with their own the Quilters were invited for supper with the hostess but often some of them had to leave to hurry to their own homes to prepare supper for their families While others would remain until the quilt was finished [Music] The Village Post Office located in the General Store became a popular meeting place it was an excellent place to advertise and announcements of community activities line the wall s socials were popular events for the whole family and every woman in the area spent several days preparing a gay decorated box or basket to take to it on the evening of the social it was packed with a tasty lunch along with a slip of paper containing the Maker's name and carried with great secrecy to the social [Music] when the women arrived all the boxes were placed together and the men were not allowed to examine them the evening usually began with dancing music could be provided by two or three musicians but usually a fiddler was persuaded to strike up a tune and a caller to sing or say the steps or country dancing or square dancing children learn these steps almost as soon soon as they could walk for everyone went to the dances including babies and children eight people were needed for each set or Square and if there weren't enough adults young people were pressed into the set and soon learned the intricate steps [Music] required when children became too tired to watch the dancing any longer they simply curled up among the coats and fell asleep after several hours of dancing the time finally arrived for the auction of the baskets and boxes an Auctioneer took over and the boxes were finally unwrapped and sold to the highest bidder because of the secre each box and found the owner's name when all the boxes had been sold the couples paired off and ate the lunch together when they had finished eating it was time for everyone to return home on such occasions a young man might ask a girl if he might walk her home under the watchful eyes of her parents [Music] a popular outing at any season of the year was a ride around the country roads on a sleigh or wagon covered with hay many friendships formed on these Tings blossomed into marriage and when this happened the community again took an interest in the young couple they would be quietly married in their parents' home or in the home of the pastor and would go to live with their parents for it would be financially impossible for them to have a Home of Their [Music] Own one evening soon after the marriage their neighbors always tried to surprise them with a chivery waiting until they were sure the young couple were in bed and asleep they crept up on the house with all manner of pots kettles and other metal objects at a given signal the confusion of noise began and continued until the bride and groom got up and gave them some money or treat of some kind chives were the cause of much mert and the couple usually accepted the joke in good spirits well they realized their neighbors were carrying out an old tradition they were honored that their neighbor neighbors cared enough about them to include them in their activities strong assurance that they would continue to be interested in their welfare as they became a part of the proud and enterprising [Music] Community before the internet before television before so much um wow courtship is radically changed now are parents even involved in this uh in Western culture United States don't know uh there are choices to be made though and this film talks about that this is the choice enjoy [Music] you [Music] oh that sounds dreamy are you ever lucky okay by oh Mom that was Jenny on the phone she was telling me all about her happened to your chin did you get slugged yes I got slugged by a few drinks and thanks to them we had a wreck and an innocent girl may lose her arm well you're a fine pair to be giving me a lecture at least I didn't get into any trouble now sue you listen to me not now Mom I'm bushed [Music] ladies and gentlemen you're listening to midnight musical moods coming to you with the compliments of pale golden Brew the beer of good taste the beer that satisfies the beer that refreshes yes friends when you're feeling let down tired and tense stop and do yourself a favor just reach into your refrigerator for a bottle of pale golden Brew relax with a cool glass of pale golden Brew the cheerful beer that belongs to a happy way of life it's a symbol of good living the mar of [Music] Distinction a lie the happy way of life the symbol of good living Mark of Distinction they know it destroys everything that's good and are we to sit in judgment on the Brewers when we're just as guilty as they are we buy and drink their stuff don't we we keep right on telling ourselves that an occasional drink doesn't matter if we don't take one with a crowd we're wet blankets we're so afraid of being wet blankets that we don't realize what jerks we turn out to be [Music] John what are we going to do it looks like we have only one choice Claire we have any sense at all we certainly ought to know what we have to do now that was kind of great I love it um I love me Christian film's got some uh drinking some fighting it's uh it's pretty great uh let's uh switch it up uh let's go underwater enjoy a face mask to permit clear visibility underwater a snorkel to allow breathing with a face underwater fins for Swift propulsion with minimum effort all are valuable life-saving tools because they can make search and recovery of submerged victims fast F and more [Music] efficient on all three items the mass snorkel in the fins probably the most important feature to look for is a good fit and comfort the mash should mold EAS to your face to form a good seal and feel comfortable the things to look for in choosing a mask should be a soft flexible rubber skirt that won't leak it should be a tempered face plate glass instead of plastic and you should have a corrosion proof metal band to hold the glass in place ultimately an adjustable strap in the back with a center divided back to offer firmer security when the mask is on top of your face now you can find masks in all shapes and sizes and the most important thing is to choose one that fits most comfortably on you some masks feature a purge valve device one that makes uh makes it a lot easier for you to clear the water out of it some masks even have a nose pinching equalizer that allows you to pinch your nose for clearing your ears you can see it in here it pinches on your nose those that don't have a nose pinching device have a rubber pad on the bottom and all you have to do is squash that pad up against the bottom of your nose and then blow against your nose and accomplishes the same thing you can even find some masks that have a prescription lens glued or ground right into the face plate for those of you that wear glasses now if you want to test a mask for a proper fit you simply put the mask against your face without the strap and inhale and if the mask stays on your face it's a good fit now you'll be able to feel if it leaks or is uncomfortable and you prevent fogging of the face plate most simply by just spitting into it and rubbing the saliva on the glass and you want to rub the saliva firmly with your fingers on the glass till till you hear a squeaking noise and then ultimately rinse it off and your mask should stay clear of course whenever we're considering the mask we're automatically also talking about the snorkel because these two items always belong together as one unit don't just stick the snorkel under the strap and and hope it'll stay there because it won't you'll leak water into the mask and ultimately you lose your snorkel instead the snorkel should be attached to the mass strap with a small snorkel keeper now this keeper will keep the snorkel in place and maintain a Sher angle for your snorkel so the two are always together the mask and the snorkel Dawning the mask is done by first placing it on the face then pulling the strap over the head this method keeps the hair from between the mask and the face and avoids overstretching the strap always double check for snugness it's loose and tough to avoid leakage readjust the strap for a comfortable snug fit for safe breathing a snorkel should have a large diameter Barrel shaped to permit unrestricted air flow the mouthpiece should be of soft rubber and should fit comfortably fins should be carefully chosen to match the user's kicking strength buoyant regardless of the type of fins you're using you'll find they're easier to put on if you wet them first then you should check the fins for fit and comfort by kicking with them gently in the [Applause] water ready to go walking backward is the proper way to move with fins on land and in shallow water you should practice clearing the snorkel without wearing a mask in chest deep water take a breath submerge and allow the snorkel to fill surface and blow through the barrel to clear it then resume normal breathing again take a breath submerge let the snorkel fill surface and clear the snorkel the same technique should be practiced with the mask in place here's an alternate method of clearing the snorkel after you've submerged tilt your head back by lifting your chin and blow the barrel clear just before surfacing then quickly drop the chin to expose the barrel above the surface and resume normal breathing clearing your mask is another important skill to learn after purposely filling the mask tilt your head back press on the top of the mask and exhale gently through the nose forcing the water out at the bottom of the Mask some divers prefer to tilt the head to one side and press on the high side of the Mask exhaling through the nose will then Force water out of the lower part of the Mask with a purge valve drop your chin and press the mask firmly against your face then blow the water out through the oneway valve when teaching classes a lookout or lifeguard is a must this incident from one of my classes illustrates why I didn't see the students off but his buddy did hey son let's get back to class and stay with your buddy now thek here look at your buddy and make sure that that strap is hanging over the ears that the snorkel fits comfortably in your mouth M I'm teaching this class the three proper methods of entering deep water when wearing mask fins and snorkel always use one of these techniques okay class now this is going to be the giant stride and uh let's hold on to our mask let's put our elbow in tight elbow in tight stand up straight and we're going to try to step on top of my head go ahead number one get that loose hand behind us number two good number three number four very good one jump that's okay number that looks very nice go ahead get together and look at each other and make sure that you're okay check each other out and as soon as you are then snorkel right on back to the shore snorkel right on back put your head down relax and snorkle right on back buddy team Stay Together nice and relaxed that looked very good class the second entry is going to be called the forward roll and our position is going to be the same we we hold on to our mask like we did before with our elbow in tight and our chin tuck we Bend way down put the elbow in between your knees and go ahead and roll forward try to hit on the back of your neck that's good number one go ahead very good two two go ahead very nice number three good [Applause] four five good sck now find your buddy now find your buddy give each other make sure you're okay go your snorkel clear and then together let's go back to the side okay students this is going to be the city in entry the C in entry and we simulate the forward roll except we go in backwards so go ahead and turn around turn around and we Bend way down put our elbow between our knees and just fall on backward go ahead number one very good two three four next one and next one get together with your buddy get together with your buddy very nice that was a sit in those are the three types of entries we have in skin diving you always want to stay together you want to you notice we emphasize the use of the buddy system and with good reason's go down in this class we're practicing heat first surface diving and one of the students inhales water chokes and panics her buddy spots the trouble and helps her to the surface as the instructor I come over to assist relax you're good okay Class come on up you're all [Applause] [Music] right another technique to practice is purposing to get used to your equipment and to gain skill and confidence in surface diving and clearing the snle [Music] and let's snorkel toward me come on keep your head down nice easy kicks good when wearing fins the kick should be slow and deep with an exaggerated knee Bend maximum power is achieved by keeping the fins in the water even when kicking at the surface the arms are kept at the sides when all these skills are learned you'll find a new sense of excitement and enjoyment but more important it will will be easier for you to locate recover and perhaps save the life of a submerged victim in this rescue situation The Rescuer keeps his face in the water to get a good view of the bottom when he sites the victim he Dives and approaches from the side to grasp one arm since the bottom is soft he simply swims to the surface instead of trying to push off on a solid bottom the recovery can be made easier by pushing off with one or both feet this makes the ascent faster and less taxing here is a group search in water with clear visibility at one end of the line the leader sets the pace notice they shift their Vision to cover the maximum area and stay in good alignment when one diver spots the victim in signals both she and her buddy dive to make the rescue the others stand by to assist if [Applause] needed in murky water the group remains in good alignment but this time they use the purposing technique surface diving and swimming near the bottom for short distances and continuing this procedure until the victim is spotted again the rescue is made by a team while the others signal to Shore and stand by to help finally remember these skills and techniques will help you become good Lifesavers but they won't make you expert skin divers a full certified course in skin diving is strongly recommended for those interested in this sport [Music] that was kind of awesome um yeah so I knew about the snorkeling skills part cuz I kind of scrubed through a little bit of that but then the rescue of drown people uh I
