foreign hello everybody I'm sorry about that um you didn't hear it but uh I was in a echo chamber uh I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films and I'm actually in the midst of a Advisory board meeting with Apple shop so I'll be appearing and then disappearing uh periodically so here it is um first I'm going to start off with is your protection against disease which is on 16 millimeter and that's what we watch so enjoy [Music] what a day for a boat ride Rob and his family are going for a picnic in their boat but where is Kathy everyone has been looking forward to this picnic where is Kathy [Music] what's wrong doesn't she want to go Kathy seems to be sick so they'll have to call off the picnic but why is Kathy sick she may have some germs inside her that have made her sick how could germs get inside Kathy germs so tiny you can't see them are all around you your skin can protect you by keeping germs out if you cut your skin germs can get into your body but your body has a way of protecting you from these germs white blood cells can pass out of the blood vessels and into the tissues where the germs are and actually eat them up the body has other ways of protecting you from germs when you breathe germs enter your body the adenoids and tonsils can trap germs a tube called the windpipe can also trap germs it is lined with a sticky material and Tiny things like hairs called cilia these help push this sticky material out through the nose and mouth openings sometimes germs get past these traps and enter the lungs from here germs enter blood vessels and are carried to other parts of the body when you eat and drink germs can enter your body some germs that miss the traps in nose and throat can pass through the stomach to the intestine germs can multiply quickly when they do they can cause pain and if the white blood cells don't destroy all the germs they may cause serious illness but your body has still another way of protecting you from germs tiny particles called antibodies form in the blood and prevent the germs from harming you but how did germs get inside Kathy this time was this how Kathy did have a scraped knee yesterday but it was well washed and dressed germs can get into the body through your mouth is that how Kathy's germs got in Kathy remembers that yesterday she was eating berries without washing them first is this how the germs got in then she was thirsty the water of that stream looked so clear and clean Kathy didn't see any germs germs are much too small to see could there have been germs in the water that made Kathy sick now as long as Kathy is sick she needs proper care so that her body can fight the germs she will rest and keep warm should Kathy have a doctor to see her well she seems to be feeling a little better she probably doesn't need a doctor this time but the picnic will just have to wait until she is better how can the rest of the family keep from Catching Kathy's sickness they won't get too close to her they'll be sure to destroy any food that may have Kathy's germs on it and they'll wash the other dishes separately from Kathy's dishes she'll stay in bed until she's better with such good care perhaps Kathy will feel better in the morning the body has many ways of protecting you from germs that cause disease your skin keeps germs out if germs get in there are traps such as tonsils and adenoids then two there are white corpuscles which eat germs up and finally there are antibodies formed in the blood which prevent germs from harming you foreign how is Kathy today she's better Kathy decides she will always wash well before eating to keep germs away from her mouth and she'll always look after her cuts and scrapes so germs won't get through her skin it's another beautiful day for a picnic Rob wants to get an early start so they can get some fishing done but where is Kathy here's Kathy and this time she's making sure that she has lots of good safe drinking water yes it's a beautiful day for a picnic [Music] thank you foreign [Music] besides the content of the film which is fascinating a camping trip that that's filled with disease uh I don't know if you notice like on the the left side here there was a lot of weird discoloration and uh that's what we call color breathing is uh sometimes the film will deteriorate the color won't deteriorate evenly and will kind of be yellowish on this end bluish on this end and that's the biggest challenge of uh color correction is like how do you fix that sometimes you're lucky it's a line and you can just kind of fade and do two different things and resolve to fix that sometimes but if it's this weird kind of fluid like weird puddle thing you you can't do it so it's very it's difficult to do if not impossible so um that's very much a challenge uh what is meaning maybe uh renzler Polytechnic Institute will tell us enjoy so you think you know what's meaning most people think oh but when we study language we find that meaning is not as simple as we thought we begin to ask questions what exactly is what are the various kinds of me goddess meaning come into existence we'll look for answers to these questions by exploring three kinds of things unit rate of meaning conceptual meaning and evocatively in the Book of Genesis one of Adam's first tasks was to give names to all cattle to the bowel of the air to every beast of the Peace today we're still naming the things about us sometimes we have trouble see that horse most people see it this book but what a child is likely to remember seeing is this or something with four legs consequently when he sees this another something with four legs and calls it a horse he's devoted when his father says no but when he sees this animal again and his father says there's a horse things begin to fall into place there's something with four legs is different from this one here we have the problem of name of recognizing the things of what it is and finding the name which most people will apply to us many words like sports things in the case of the word horse the word stands for the actual animal or the word free then for actual objects like this first one kind of meaning which a word may have lies in the thing or thing to which the word refers this kind of meaning we call denotative means the word building for example name this and this or this automobile name this and this believe it or not but our word whether they name things or not stand for ideas ideas which exist in our minds but you're not things to be observed in me for instance molecule stands for an abstract concept which people who understand the word can carry about in their head this abstract idea if we more or less logically attach to a word constitutes a second kind of meaning conceptually when we were trying to form a concept which would enable us to recognize a horse to the idea of four-legged something we have to add the idea of a flowing tail strong legs solid food a man long cylindrical head a glossy short-haired coat and the idea of size strength these ideas taken together form a fairly accurate concept of what constitutes a horse the idea will remain in the mind so that we can use the word for it and understand it whether we happen to be or an actual voice is or not all words stand for ideas these ideas of a kind of meaning we call conceptual when we formulate the conceptual meaning of a word to ourselves and others we make up the sort of thing we call a definition that's the conceptual meaning of the word should be expressed as a thick structure with walls and roots or the conceptual meaning which we give to the word automobile to be embodied in these books but besides being associated with ideas words always produce additional responses a third kind of evocative consisting of the sense in it the emotional beatitude which the word makes us feel democracy can fall to mind the speakers and crowds the excitement reading of drum the sounds of bran the show the tension the planner [Music] [Music] the word democracy May remind us of the serious responsibility of both if they recall the Dignity of our government and of Lincoln's word about democracy the evocative meaning of a word then may be very complex do it belong all the pictures others sent images which the word evokes in our imagination foreign the evocative meeting includes the feelings and the motion for the word awake to evocative meaning belongs our sense of the appearance and sound of the word itself elephant we antedilovia beat that black never yes strong Utica priority all these particular responses which a word can produce I'd like to think from the conceptual I mean the abstract idea for which the word says we get this kind of meaning from experience rather than from reasons from living rather than some things we've seen horses we've heard the sounds of their food our experience is associated found images and pictures with the word Sports then do the feelings that we have when we were in the presence of the book that's the strangers the strength perhapses of anxiety and destruction are related to the word for it and may be recalled by but in addition to all this experience before other events May Be associated with a more particular experience with the horse in such a way as to add to the evocative connotation of the word right of the field where we saw the animal the light of the star the work going on about the thought those are performed the other sound but all these may now be evoked by that simple syllable Sports the evocative meaning of every word grows out of our experience experience which is always change adding towards canceling out the evocative responses with the word can produce the evocative meanings of a word may be extremely complex involving many some of them inconsistent sometimes we see water like this foreign that's what the Mighty Sea I'm part of the evocative sanitation of the word water but despite these complications or perhaps rather because of it it is the evocative meaning of Landing It's ability to Kindle our imagination to make us see here and judge it makes words something more than mechanical symbols for abstract ideas or verbal arrows pointing at them so in our dealing with words we must recognize three kinds of me there is denotative meaning the things which were its name there's perceptual meaning the idea was the word brings to mind the meaning which we can express by drawing up our definition and there is advocacy all the images feelings attitudes and value judges which a word awakens in our imagination there are many further complexities of the problem of meaning but here is at least a preliminary answer to the question what is [Music] so was that film as baffling to you as it was to be when I first watched it I'm like what is going on when were where was this was this shown in a college it's it's a really fascinating film and I'm happy that I got to show it to you but yeah it's a head scratcher indeed um anyways I'm still in my meeting um so here is a longer film called rocking horse cowboy and it's another Encyclopedia Britannica film but this one's an interesting kind of look at what are Cowboys like in the uh 70s enjoy your worst cowboy well first cowboy hello well there's not many good Cowboys anymore it's a couple in life here sometimes got kicked out of school got a little Rowdy a little little on there I guess and so I've been Cowboys all my life I don't know anything else I'd rather do foreign foreign [Music] between [Music] how were you will be been telling tidy to be on your way to free [Music] Ze foreign [Applause] [Music] guys there from different parts of the country all over you get to [ __ ] back and forth between your truck and coffee and sometimes the body's my boy having a bottle of whiskey sneaked back and have some drinks set around and play cards made to I got him back this time you know again a little bit then you know what whatever man had he had five dollars or maybe ten dollars I've seen something on board lose fifty dollars you know they had a little money in the pocket maybe there's some time that caught a little trouble when you try to get it back but it just didn't work out nowadays why it seem like the guys you know I don't know what they either want to jump up and go to town or they don't want to be associated with like used to believe [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] Happy Days riding beneath the Sun you've been telling tiny Amy you'll ride a wild red Mustang up [Music] I've been telling tiny Amy that's your true Red Man from a plug and you'll spit on Buzz Buzz grow curly whiskers tell time from the Sun foreign really I I can't do is because I I could of course ages has got me and you know I just can't get around of course now like now I know I know I can know what I mean my legs and everything's been broke up so much that I haven't got to break your legs under anymore handling all kinds of horses and because you know why yeah you're getting busted up before you know anybody knows you know a man that's worked all his life why to lay around and go in this wildfire and stuff like that just to depend on somebody else as well I mean I may come to that but not as long as I can work I want I'm gonna have to stay away because you know tell the truth that's all I know [Music] twinkling stars and soar with whistling wings softly whispered a sweet sweet Amy you'll dream brand new Wheels [Music] a crippled cowboy with a broken car foreign [Music] my God I don't know they walk by you and they won't give you no room or Crush too much you've got to be pretty good on your feet they get run over and uh going across the street in a damn traffic way through your father does you don't make a mistake going across the likewise and then jump between the cars with that that's not for me I went down there one time and I just got in out and down on the bus so I met up with a guy I was sitting in this restaurant and we got talking I told him that uh I just kind of passed some time away he said well let's go up to my room while it's just he said well he said well I might want to play a little poker and I had a fire shot from my feet I got on his pockets inside and I know 45 in there so uh you know a little bit there was another guy coming into the room and he sat down and he he got me in this and they didn't I had a few dollars in my pocket not very much maybe five or ten dollars so it was one guy says uh throw your shops in I said no I said I don't throw them in for anything because they'd already got the money you know so one of the guy he started drink for because I said throw him in I said I said leave him alone you know unless like I said I ain't gonna I'm not going to bet them well I had it for 45. I sure was going to lose that so he made the past I mean I just blocked back a little bit and I come up I let him have run over the head with his 45. it might didn't take it out it was in myself I'm shopping I knocked him across the bed and this other guy made a run for me I knocked him down and out to I just restore it was both down and I just reached over and got what money is on the bed something wasn't mine so most of them was I got up walked out and walked out on the street and knew no country boys got to be awful careful in the city of entertain you [Music] well it's they don't I have the work to do like they used to they don't work they used to take care of the cattle ride more among the cattle and watch the cows from the Cavs now I not timed we don't know what you're looking for and just ride back because I don't know sit car ride by Carolina you know what she is when when she is sick and used to the only ride to the cows all day long when it was just a day's work but in the days days work with the cattle no they they write to him and just well they just don't do the work they used to do well they don't know how in the first place a lot of the boys and the time that uh you got you see a cow land you know it was you know your cattle well you know there's something wrong not most of the boys today they don't know don't know cattle well enough to to understand that [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] there you go man used to come up he's going to go out and they're together cattle just something like this we're doing it right now but Madden real crows no just running off in a bunch just run them up in the bunch and a couple Riders going on other other guys hold them hold them up you know and a man of the two or three men going to her two Ropers or three Ropers whatever they use and uh we're open and drag him back out to the far just well the practically to do not only there's more and more cattle and and other hands than they are today today they they got crowds and trucks you know to go out to the job and it's not not near the work it used to be [Music] me you'll ride a wild ride Mustang foreign [Music] [Music] we've had me out in the camp I got there about 15 miles out right out on the Dead [Music] man it rained and snowed the other thing that froze over you know and all the stickers highest tickets hanging on now well on the stage but just like looked like Christmas you know that wind blowing memorized about making their own trip about well I'll say from 18 to 20 miles anyway sometimes fun you know not well I'll get out of there about seven or eight o'clock anyway and they take me anyway you know sometimes it's all how much how far they have to go back I get cold feet get cold hands get cold and although I'd stop building me a little far I'll go well I'll warm up a little bit I had a good heavy Mackinaw I'm not wrapped up pretty pretty good I'll tell you um right away and see a bunch of cows back on and shove them back my local magma Lounge little father to find someone I have to get the call well you know you don't realize how cold you can get just right once you get local fun and go kind of a long Trotter or look you know what it's kind of relaxed you didn't want to get a little bit then go and get to move these old cows get cold yeah feet get cold I have to get on build another fire it's miserable I can tell you [Music] [Music] foreign there I wouldn't go into Williams lower Flagstaff mostly Winslow men stay all night have a hell of a good time get into fights go into that you know the house everybody [Music] [Music] you could have a good time you're going with a few dollars well if they maybe you might as well just be shot in the wall but man well you have a dog if you have a dog you know take a draw finish out the party they'd run me out of town about daylight and that'll be it but in the last 15 years I've slowed down no a lot years ago I'd go down get drunk ride in a horseback still all night now is all I do is go down and have a few drinks dirty slot machines and go down across tracks once in a while come back get in time for breakfast and go to work [Music] it's hard to get a job on the on the CAL Ranch knowledge now the ranches is well exchanged I'm becoming what to do trenches now and it's called rocking horse Cowboys is coming well they're not experienced the main reasons a lot of a lot of ranges while you just probably give a damn freeze get what you can out of you and well when the work is done while you're done [Music] day leave me [Music] a dream brand new dreams [Music] Chicago [Music] I never had a real home and all my days at cowboy only bunk houses cow camps I really never had no family speak of and I didn't know one but myself and that's what keeps me traveling around nobody looked hard to only myself and really a man when he's a cowboy or what he is with it uh he's got someone to look forward to where he's got something done to hold him down but traveling around you'll never have it [Music] foreign [Music] oh I got out of his little money in the bank saddle bottle Spurs chefs [Music] no car but oh I got so hard [Music] with this [Laughter] a crippled cowboy with a broken car you'll never be [Music] there [Music] thank you [Music] in the middle of India near Hyderabad thirty thousand Men Women and Children built one of the largest engineering structures in the world foreign [Music] River they built a Dam called nagarjuna Saga to irrigate 2 million acres of land to grow food it took 14 years the work was half finished on this single day [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] foreign [Applause] wow [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you [Applause] hey [Music] watered to grow enough food to feed the 10 million people who were added to the population in that part of India in the 14 years it took to complete the dam at Naga Juna Saga [Music] foreign [Music] film that amazing film is that um if they had implemented some sort of population control Family Planning then maybe they would not have had to have built a dam that big um and that it was basically it it's it's fascinating it's that's the the ilk of this is like wow here's this this amazing effort uh to try to uh damn water so that they can route it to produce more food but uh in the very nature of this um doing this and this is the only effort they did then um they just now are back to where they were they now have to worry about the next population Etc so anyways um hope you enjoyed that that was a really I mean at the very least even if you don't agree with the message the imagery was stunning it was really really crazy um and the cowboy film was also interesting if you could
