e I is I is I I I e is hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the a Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch old 16 millimeter films um yeah that was work in energy which was a silent film that came from the mle Brothers film Library uh and was just filled with beautiful stock footage from the 20s um wide variety of sources uh beautiful uh simple animation of things um I always think that uh well I don't think in this case but a lot of Mogul Brothers things they just just clipped from different sources and just kind of pasted it together and would oftentimes make their own films uh just based on whatever content they had they didn't care about copyright uh so this uh but this was actually made by an actual film company that wasn't mogle Brothers although they might have done the same thing cuz it was a little bit of a wild west uh back then in the uh the teens and the 20s all right uh we've been scanning uh films from the Cornet collection uh and uh this is one and this is different than I I have another film on the subject but this is a totally different one so this is finger painting methods enjoy [Music] this is e who attends one of the Golden Gate Nursery schools finger painting is a joy to all the children school life is not complete without this activity a skillful teacher can supervise a number of children at one time provided everything is in Readiness [Music] beforehand this handy bucket of water gets the bulk of the paint off the hands and saves the washroom from being smeared up [Music] to get finished paintings that are satisfying to the child materials must be properly prepared in the Golden Gate Nursery schools the cook makes the paint the recipe 2 cups of sifted flour 2 teaspoons salt 3 cups of cold [Music] water beat the mixture until lumps are gone [Music] add two cups of hot water and cook on the stove until clear but not too thick this good baiting will remove all lumps the lower half of milk cartons make good containers [Music] one4 of a cup of vegetable coloring goes into each container of pink Baker's food coloring is used purchased for economy in gallon quantity coffee can containers too leftover paint must be refrigerated to prevent sour plastic aprons are best protection to clothing and easy for teachers to keep clean wetting the table makes the paper stick to the table but the paper itself is only wiped over with a wet sponge [Music] only the teachers take the paint from the containers for they can best judge the correct amounts needed for good finished [Music] effects the children point to the colors they want to use a maximum of four colors being available [Music] while the younger children may just smear the paints these four-year-olds use fingers as pencils and draw [Music] design see how this girl works with skill and deliberation to produce certain effects [Music] [Applause] the teacher learns to work fast and thus prevents Restless fingers from painting other things besides the [Applause] [Music] paper when the paper slips it is because the table is not wet enough this is the forearm press technique this is the elbow press [Music] technique this folding process is one which the children discovered for themselves and it gives many interesting [Music] effects the washing up is part of the fun and calls for good techniques too no towels wasted here careful presentation of good materials makes for good fun and also for beautiful paintings such as those you now see paintings like these may not be works of art but they are Priceless pictures to those fortunate children who have opportunity to make them beautiful paintings can be made by all children if good materials are presented every day and finger painting is considered primarily as an art material so that each child develops beyond the smearing stage to the Crea one where colors are kept separated and Designs come to life [Music] [Applause] [Music] wow that was awesome uh especially the elbow uh technique I mean I guess if you're a kid and you've got paint here you might as well just go all out just go for it um I hope at some point I can find the color version of that and one of the things I noticed uh to geek out a little bit was you notice that a lot of the footage seems sped up and I think what happened was it was shot at 18 frames a second and then they printed it with a soundtrack at 24 frames a second so everything seemed a little sped up one thing I didn't notice were circles uh this film has circles I think that make up for the lack of circles in the previous film this is circles two enjoy [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] I wish the music was better I visually I love it but I I wanted the the music to be more intense and um I don't know concrete a tonal um industrial I'm not sure what what I was hoping for but but uh visually beautiful beautiful and so perspective films was an offshoot of cornet and they given what I've I've seen from perspective they've they reached out to a lot of filmmakers uh to licens their stuff for distribution uh to libraries and schools and so these weren't the three Rs this was exploring other things um so uh yeah that's what I've encountered with a lot of perspective things so there's a lot of short stories that are uh dramatized in perspective films there's a lot of uh other kind of things where they brought them in um but speaking of the three Rs here's uh we're back to them back to the standard traditional cornet and um yeah this one is visually there's some beautiful things in here that would be great for fullback tattoos if you're interested um but yeah I'll let you decide even the title frame is is one where I'm like oh that's awesome make that into a t-shirt all right here's grammar verbs and the ways we use them enjoy [Music] today we are going to be thinking about verbs what about verbs let's begin with a simple sentence describing the dog Rober seems happy the verb seems tells about Rover's condition or state verbs that describe condition are usually called state of being verbs you can usually substitute some form of the verb Seam for them let's try another sentence robber wags his tail wags is the verb it is not a state of being verb you couldn't substitute seems for Wags Rover seams his tail no Wags tells what Rob does it describes his action so we have verbs which show action and we have verbs which show state of being the tower is in the clouds is used as a being verb the birds sound gay today sound used as a being verb the boat steams into the river steams used as an action verb it comes to the bridge action verb bars drop action verb cars stop action verb the bridge Rises action verb the boat chugs on action [Music] verb action or state of being two basic things that verbs show now verbs can be divided into transitive verbs and intransitive verbs in describing what Rover is doing we would say robber choose a bone in this sentence choose is used transitively it shows that something bone receives an action we could say merely what Rover does Rover choose in this sentence nothing receives the action of the verb choose so we say it is used in transitively we say an action verb is used transitively if the sentence includes a receiver of the action we say an action verb is used intransitively if the sentence does not include a receiver of the action every verb has a certain voice well not exactly that kind of voice we speak of verbs as being in either the active voice or the passive voice let's see what these mean all Rover Rover carries a bucket the subject Rover acts he carries so this is the active voice of the verb once more Rover this time we will say it with the verb in the passive voice the subject won't act no Rob you're going to do the same thing again the bucket is carried by Rover the bucket is the subject but it does not act so we say the voice of the verb is passive so that is all that is meant by the voice of a verb if it is passive the subject of the verb is aced upon if the verb is in the active voice the subject of the verb does the acting there is one more common way of arranging verbs by mood for our purposes there are three three important moods of a verb the first is the indicative mood Rover is running the indicative mood simply indicates it says what is happening or was happening or will be happening all right Rover you may stop the second mood is imperative Rover Run This is a form you use to command Rover come [Applause] the third mood of verbs is called the subjunctive mood this is used when you tell about something that might be and it usually follows an if if Rover were running now he would get a bone so we use verbs to show different moods the indicative mood which we use most of the time the imperative mood which we use in commands and the subjunctive mood which we use to say that something might be time can be indicated by the tense of a verb in the simplest form we think of things happening now Rover sleeps this is present tense things that happened in the past past Rover slept this is past tense the past the present and the future looking into a crystal ball we might see that Rover will sleep this is future tense by adding what are called auxiliary or helping verbs we can change each tense to a perfect tense so in the past we took a picture of Rover while he slept but Rover had slept before we added the auxiliary had to form the past perfect tense for the present perfect tense we use the present tense of the auxiliary Rover sleeps now but we know Rover has slept before the present perfect tense really tells about something in the past we use two auxiliaries for the future perfect tense Rover will sleep until 6:00 but if he sleeps until 7:00 Rover will have slept through supper this is the future perfect tense so we have our most important tenses the past the present the future the past perfect the present perfect and the future perfect these tenses of a verb are formed from what are called the principal parts of a verb the first principal part of a verb in this case sleep forms the present tense of the verb and the future tense with an auxiliary the second principal part of a verb slept forms the past tense the third principle part again slept is used in forming all the perfect tenses it almost always appears with an auxiliary verb the this form of the verb is called the past participle and so we have the principal parts of the verb sleep for every verb there are three principal parts and for most of the more common verbs you'll want to memorize these parts remember that verbs can differ in voice active and passive you can use verbs in their various moods according to your wishes we say that an action verb is used transitively if the sentence includes a receiver of the action we say it is used intransitively if the sentence does not include a receiver of the action finally remember that verbs show action or state of being these are the main ideas that will help us to understand verbs and how we use [Music] them I just took a big bite of an apple all this talk about Rover eating uh made me want to eat an apple um man that that scene of the Frankfurter shaped uh verb be kind of lounging and is sad yeah that uh sometimes I'm like that's totally me uh Miss Cynthia I think mentioned a much better film about verbs called uh verb uh it's what's happening uh that's part of the grammar Rock series of the Schoolhouse Rock series I have it but if I played it I would definitely the stream would go down because that is owned by ABC which is owned by Disney so but it's it's brilliant it's just a little black kid running around doing different things and uh it's just it's an exciting song it gets you very invigorated and yeah it's just good all right um let's return to uh something I got from the National Archives this is uh a I believe this is a signal core film Army signal core film American working women 1950 I think is when this film came out I don't know we'll see enjoy [Music] 5:00 in the afternoon the end of the standard 8 hour working day for most Americans among them 17 million women since 9 :00 this morning hundreds of these women have been busy assembling and checking the tiny parts that go into electric hearing aids Hazel Kennedy is one of these women 5:00 in the factory is not day's end for her it is merely the moment that divides her business hours from her personal hours putting away her tools and tidying up her bench is the act that separates the two lives of Hazel Kennedy in her middle 30s married and the mother of two children Hazel is a skilled worker and fond of her job she's had three pay raises and a promotion since she first came here she's a high school graduate like many of the girls in the factory and she continued working after marriage to augment her family's income her job is important to her but not all important when she registers her departure on the factory time clock she and millions like her are stepping out of one area of their lives into another an area of close and more personal relationships push back the clock close to the hour of 5 again it is nearly quitting time for the tellers and Clerks of a downtown Bank there is no factory-like commotion here but a quiet dignified slowing down of activity no matter how anxious one is to get [Music] home the silent signal on the face of his pocket watch releases both the vice president of the bank and his [Music] secretary she is Joan Morgan placed here by a secretarial school which recommends only its most apt graduates she likes her employer and is conscientious about her work but she is still young still unmarried and her major interest is outside the bank Waits impatiently outside the bank with no major responsibilities girls like Joan use their jobs as lucrative intervals between school and marriage their incomes are seldom high but then neither are their job Ambitions Joan can be said to be marking time but while she does she fills a very useful place in the country's working economy and has a good time in the bargain in a scientific laboratory quitting time comes only when the day's experiments can be safely put aside these white mice represent countless hours of observation and note recording to Martha Hansen she is a lab assistant in a research institute devoted to the study of the cause and cure of cancer colleg trained in biological science Martha represents a growing segment of women whose dominant interest is in their vocation whose life is more or less in their work she is going home now to a room she shares with Joan Morgan the secretary but unlike her friend she leaves her daily tasks with reluctance because many shops stay open late to serve the people who go home at 5:00 Anne Maloney Works a little longer than the rest it's Anne's job to assist women Shoppers as head sales girl in a lingerie store her employe leaves her on her own much of the time she is accountable for the cash receipts at the end of the day her position of trust is one that pays well but it is not what Anne would like most to be doing like Joan Morgan and Hazel Kennedy she does not live to work she works to live so with Anne four working women have been represented four out of 17 million women in America who work more or less 8 hours a day for wages but what of the remaining of the day that follows Hazel Kennedy driving home from the factory has already stopped and bought the groceries for the evening meal it's a 10m trip to her home so a car is a necessity to the kennedies every evening on the way home she stops to pick up her husband Ed at the small Hardware Factory where he is Master Mechanic and Foreman he's usually waiting for her at a little after 5 when the lives of two working people converge and the Kenedy start to gather into a family unit they've arranged for Hazel's married sister to care for their two children at her house during after school hours the youngsters stay there until their parents can pick them up and take them home since school occupies their weekday hours the children are well adjusted to the arrangement they have been taught to realize the practicality of their parents purposes Hazel and Ed have saved and made personal sacrifices in order to own a home of their own it's not large but it's fairly new and situated in a pleasant neighborhood not far from Ed's Factory and a few blocks from a good school although Ed Kennedy earns good wages owning this comfortable and attractive house would have been beyond his own means it was bought with the help of Hazel's income but there is another reason why she works at a full-time job the kennedies want their children to have a better life than theirs they want them to be able to go to college to study for careers of their own choice this will take money which must be accumulated in the intervening years the kenedy's work is not over at 5:00 there is the dinner to prepare and household repairs for Ed to tend to there are no servants in the average American home nor is the wife the servant everybody helps around the house for in good homes the children are trained at an early age to be useful Hazel's children have definite personal and household [Music] responsibilities the youngsters may not do everything with skill but their Spirit of cooperation shows their careful upbringing the young women's Christian Association house is home for Martha the girl who works in the research laboratory coming as she does from another city this home offers her friendships outside the sphere of her work the expense of her small apartment here is shared with her roommate Joan the [Music] secretary the interests of the two girls are different but by sharing the enthusiasms of Youth they get along fine since they have no immediate family obligations both these girls wages go to support only themselves Joan is engaged her fiance is just beginning a career as an architect so she is realistic enough to know that she'll probably continue working for a few years after marriage but Martha is devoted to science when she does decide to marry it will probably be with someone with the same educational background as herself someone who will share her career with her home to an Maloney is her parents house it is a good house in a good neighborhood if it appears above her income level it is because it is All That Remains of the substantial estate of her once well-to-do father for 10 years now Anne has been the sole support and comfort of her parents while she was in college her father fell ill and never fully recovered she had to come home give up her studies in music this was a blow to her personal plans as she had both a talent and a great love for music while her father's Health has improved he still must live quietly and cannot contribute to the support of the household that will be Anne's job as far ahead as she can see her mother is still able to prepare the family meals and do most of the housework which frees Anne for her job 6 days of the week it's been a long time in America since homemaking was the only career allowed to women Anne understands her mother's oldfashioned domestic viewpoints but also wants to know those of the outside world she's more adaptable than her mother and although she wants a home of her own someday she would not let homemaking keep her from outside even though the malonies own their own home household accounts are a constant concern and salary is not large yet it must cover taxes and insurance and bills for heating lighting and repairs as well as provide food and clothing for a family of three her responsibilities are numerous yet she Bears them well glad that she can help the load is never so heavy that she cannot still find solace in her love of music at least one evening a week an spends a few Pleasant hours with a music appreciation group listening to recordings [Music] [Applause] [Music] meanwhile with the radio turned down low and the children both in bed the Kennedy living room has its own mood of peace and relaxation while Hazel catches up on the family mending she and her husband share the news of the neighborhood the gossip of their jobs plans for the future all the high hopes of a conial [Music] family that same evening with no thought of tomorrow's typewriter and appointment book Joan is out for an evening of movie entertainment with her young architect back at the girl's apartment Martha does some unfinished research but the theories of biostatics can become less exciting as the hour gets late it's a biological fact that even scientists need plenty of sleep this is the end of their day the day of four among the 17 million women in America who work these women are ready for rest from jobs that 50 years ago were believed beyond their abilities since those yesterdays there there has been much favorable change and with each tomorrow such working women will find more opportunity to shape their own lives in their own [Music] way the alarm clock warns the working woman of the dawn of a new day punctuality is a prime requisite for all jobs in America and most Americans follow an undeviating morning [Music] schedule once out of bed time must be allowed for waking up for taking a shower eating breakfast dressing properly and for travel to the job is it cool enough for her wool suit does it look like rain of all four women the one with the biggest morning responsibilities is Hazel she must be up a little sooner than the others because the cedes have family breakfast at home and the children must be ready for school she will also fix a lunch for Ed but she will have her own at the plant cafeteria once more Hazel starts her 8-hour Factory routine her trained fingers perform their precise and delicate tasks as she assembles the minute electric tubes that go into hearing [Music] aids for work requiring such fine skills an increasing number of firms are finding women indispensable more and more women are being employed not only as Checkers and assemblers but as full-fledged operators on intricate machine jobs under modern conditions factory work no longer means drudger and exhaustion for women even in fields which demand sustained concentration most Factory employers have discovered that women work infinitely better under good conditions than they do under poor ones it pays dividends to allow regular rest periods and to provide cheerful and sanitary washrooms and lockers paid vacations and other benefits these are standard requirements at any modern plan Good Health Care is another essential modern dispensaries are provided where the working woman can receive immediate treatment for a cold or a cut or almost any condition which is hampering her General well-being and efficiency factory work with its repetitive routine would not satisfy a person like Joan who is trained for her job as a personal secretary heard you ities range from stenography to diplomacy and call for the expression of many qualities from tact to intuition although Joan does not plan to rise to an executive position in the world of business she admires the increasing number of women who do this visitor is not only the manager of a thriving business in the community she is also a member of the state legislature one of three women in that lawmaking body meeting highly successful women is a fascinating aspect of Joan's job in fact she feels partly paid in the interesting variety of her work since most American working women take constant pride in their appearance lunch hour shopping sessions are often a necessity and often a pleasure an and Joan who do not know each other meet across the counter as Clerk and customer they represent an equation at the root of American economy wherein women are both producers and consumers buyers and sellers by such transactions each strengthens the other's economic position and the stability of the community as a [Music] whole just as all working women are vital to American economy so girls like Martha Hansen working in this Laboratory are vital to the social structure which that economy supports a structure which has enabled Martha and many girls like her to prove the thinking capacity of women it may be a long time before Martha becomes a leading scientist most of the creative positions in her field of scientific research are as yet held by men that is a challenge not a reason for despair even now Martha feels herself part of important developments part of a great Movement by science to Break Down The Walls of ignorance and futility she knows that her accuracy her patience and her attention to small detail are invaluable to the kind of research work she is doing by such abilities women can and do make enormous contributions in the field of science these contributions Martha hopes will lead her to positions of increased responsibility but the kind of job is not the important thing Martha with her scientific mind and her interest in humanity might have been a [Music] nurse an patient and unselfish might have been a teacher Joan might have been a hairdresser Hazel steady and reliable might have worked on her father's Farm almost any of these girls with proper training might fill any one of the more than 17 million jobs in a thousand fields which are open to American women there are few fields which are still closed to them every day more are expanding their present opportunities but it is not the job that counts it is the woman herself the woman who works to make a better world for her children and the woman who works to make a better world for man kind these are not more important nor less than the woman who works for her parents sake nor is she greater or smaller than the one who works for the sake of herself for each takes an honest pride in her work knowing that she has demonstrated her rightful place beside men in shaping the world of the future [Music] another f okay um turns out it's the 1300th episode of our streaming show um thank you Kevin for the $13 um I just uh looked at it and so here's some math for you real quick uh let's see where is this at of course I cleared it uh so we have watched watched more than 6,000 films um that's pretty amazing uh and you guys have been there with us most of you uh and we're just going to keep going um yeah and so that previous film uh America working women was fascinating and I was like why is this uh a army film and it it turns out it was RKO path so it was probably like a short subject that was made by path RKO path uh that the Army paid for uh to use and was this shown to you know why was it made and why was it shown in the Army was it to try to soften the push back on women working in the military perhaps I I'm not quite sure but uh fascinating thing nonetheless um and the fact that the women were living at the YWCA while they were working jobs I mean that's you know I think well I know for sure that the YMCA here in Raleigh was a place that you could stay um and I I tried to actually get a room there once like when I was kind of without it was before my lease of my apartment was going to come up and I was like oh well I can stay here but it was kind of expensive uh and it that was going to be the YMCA where Barney 5 stayed uh when he eventually moved to Raleigh from Mayberry so uh I don't think they redid that YMCA so I don't think there's rooms there anymore but yeah that was a place that you could stay that was considered safe um yeah thank you for joining us today and thank you for the for being there as part of the 1300th
