hi everybody I'm skip Alzheimer welcome to the AV Geeks lunchtime streaming show where we watch films from our past that we're on 16 millimeter that uh are either from our archive or from other archives where we have scanned the materials um this last film was part of the Mogul Brothers collection which was a Archive of what was a library of films based in New York City uh that were rented out for a fee or you could purchase the films and um it's part of a series there's a couple of dwellers in blah and so this is a kind of a hodgepodge of uh films that were shot uh usually what happened what was interesting is around this time you had a bunch of rich white dudes who were traveling the world they were documenting what they were seeing with film then they would bring it back and they would do these lectures like they would do lectures at their travel group or they would travel to go on little tiny tours at universities and they would basically lecture so what they would do is they would show the film and then talk about it as they were watching it um and then some of this footage got sold to Distributors who would edit it up and put it in different things so that's kind of how a lot of these films were and so you have this documentation of these early um you know early 20th century uh tribes all over the world with unfortunately a white person rich person skew to it um which could be if they're benevolent and smart wouldn't be a problem but then sometimes you run across ones where it's like regrettable uh shots and inner titles that show that they're just in it for Laughs um and are very unsympathetic to the people that they're capturing uh so where were we we watch old films hey thanks folks for coming out last night to the Alamo Drafthouse and watching um some films about uh awkward love uh Sean was there and Kevin was there Kevin actually went to two shows I don't think he came specifically to see my film uh films again I think that it just happened that it was between times that he was seeing films at the Alamo Kevin and Sean great folks and what I hope to do maybe is start traveling more and actually go into uh maybe the West Coast um there's some tentative plans there about maybe going to Portland San Francisco LA we'll see I'm not not 100 sure uh you know going there doesn't necessarily mean that I'm going to do a show there kind of depends on what I can can manage but um let's go ahead and uh watch a film it is Black History Month um so on the scanner I have a film and this is a wonderful uh music musical film and hopefully this will not get us in trouble but this is not safety demonstration of the bandsaw this is Boogie Woogie Blues uh and it has an intro I Believe by Ozzie Davis Aussie Davis who talks about where the film came from the archive that had it and um how it ended up for us to see uh so here it is Boogie Woogie Blues enjoy [Music] to the Casual Observer it was just another Warehouse in Tyler Texas but inside that warehouse a vibrant world of the 1930s and 40s waited to come alive again on a warm August Night in 1983. that fascinating world was rediscovered by Dr G William Jones Southern Methodist University professor and director of the Southwest film video archive a trip from the warehouse manager Dr Jones went to the old building there in a Dusty forgotten corner he found a stack of Aging Steel film canisters aside was the missing link to Black Cinema cause of Priceless nitrate prints of vintage black audience films together these precious relics became known as the Tyler Texas Blackstone collection why should this collection be given such a noble place in the annals of filmmaking why is it referred to as the missing link in Black Cinema because it comprises a major portion of the surviving films created by blacks themselves for black audiences there were black directors producers screenwriters black actors and actresses all in control of their own destiny telling their stories as they saw fit at the same time there was a whole network of theaters across the nation which showed black films on an exclusive basis while there were various other films with all black casts these other films were produced by white filmmakers made to please white audiences at their best they were mere parodies of the black experience of that time your sorted shorts newsreels and feature-length films found in the Tyler Texas black film collection when various stages of deterioration some were Beyond repair through the help of the sale Corporation the films which were salvageable have been preserved for all the world to see these films will provide you with a glimpse of American film history that you may never have seen before you will be treated to a special interpretation of life during the times of the 1930s and 40s naturally many of the scenes he had depicted will not reflect current ideas and thinking yet they are extremely valuable as a gauge of a Black Culture still in its early stages of development they show us a rich complex and unique history which belongs to us all it has been said that we must know where we have come from in order to know where we are capable of going so as you watch Step and fetch'd make an art out of indecision or July Jones dance with that distinctive Flair so peculiar to that extraordinary period remember these performers and their contributions in the context of the times the laughter and above all the hope they brought to a people left behind rather than something to be ridiculed or belittled these films deserve to be studied understood and cherished with that in mind sit back and relive some of the Forgotten pages of a remarkable chapter in Black Entertainment it's a story that begs to be told even tired of the Moon I guess it's just because I'm in love I'm tired tired of everything but you foreign [Music] so what happened there was that the um I was writing to the wrong hard drive and it filled up and then everything started collapsing with the software um but anyways I could I could at least run it um but anyway so the film itself um excuse me it's what we call it a as far as a genre a race film uh this film was meant to be shown in uh African-American theaters across the United States in Raleigh there were three and basically because of segregation you had separate theaters uh and they would they would play Hollywood films or other films but generally they were on the low end of the totem pole so uh there were some uh film producers who made films specifically for that market and what would happen is this is very similar to a soundie whereas you would have a performer going through wherever they were shooting soundies or shooting this material and they uh producers would reach out to the performer and say hey we'll pay you 50 bucks if you do your performance here uh in a studio and you know 50 bucks wow that's great that's all they would get they wouldn't get any more money after that um and so they'd be recorded on film then edit it and then it would be in distribution um there was a such a film that was made in um uh Greenville South North Carolina I think was called pitch a boogie woogie and uh they would it was a nightclub owner there who basically anytime a performer would come through they would shoot the performance and then they had these kind of they would show the performance of a couple of songs or some sort of stand-up routine then there would be this very lame um story about this these two nightclub owners I think and their interactions and the acting was very poor but it was you know a way to kind of show these performers so it was really kind of fascinating um all right we're gonna bring everything to the 70s and uh perhaps a career in the government is for you uh you're welcome to sing along to this song If you know it enjoy [Music] do [Music] what you gonna do [Music] what you're gonna do when you're finally on your own what will you do [Music] sooner or later each of us enters the world of work some directly after graduation others after additional education or special training some go into Private Industry [Music] some into public service working for government local state or federal today one out of every six people working in the United States is a government worker serving the public through some government agency no other field offers you a better chance to make your town city state and Country or the world a better place no doubt you studied about your government and its processes in school how each level local state and federal works and functions but how many of you ever considered a government career for yourself this film will acquaint you with some of the careers found only in government it will describe some of the technical and professional occupations present in both government and Private Industry as well as show you how government has a need for people in almost every occupation that there is this film will help you answer the question is a career in government for you [Music] [Applause] thank you [Music] at 18 and able to vote each of you assumes the responsibility for seeing that your government runs effectively by electing the best possible officials and you can help run your government by actually working for it you can get a government job by getting elected by being appointed or by taking competitive Civil Service examinations this is the way most people qualify for civil service positions at all levels of government if you qualify on an examination your name will be placed on a list for your chosen area of work vacancies are filled from these lists for certain types of beginning jobs your education and experience may qualify you without the need for taking a written examination military positions are obtained by enlisting in one of the Armed Forces by receiving a commission after attending one of the service Academies or by successful completion of college work in the reserve Officers Training Corps or attending officer candidate School what kind of jobs will you find primarily in government well heading the list are jobs in education a third of all government workers are engaged in some form of Educational Services teachers in all grades kindergarten Elementary School Junior and Senior High College teachers for the handicap the [ __ ] the underprivileged the emotionally disturbed [Music] teachers are also used in the armed forces service schools [Music] others too are needed and many more who are vital to the educational processes although their jobs are not unique with government administrative and clerical workers maintenance people librarians dietitians nurses [Music] National Defense is another major area utilizing Specialists you'll find only in government [Music] many jobs can be found in National Defense which are similar to those in the civilian sector [Music] most are slanted toward promoting administering and supporting the Armed Forces these include not only clerks and purchasing agents scientists and Engineers technicians and statisticians but cooks and mechanics the Postal Service an independent establishment of the federal government offers a wide range of specialized work 750 000 people are employed in the Postal Service every letter you receive passes through several hands before it is dropped in your letterbox mail carriers delivering mail to every home or office wherever it may be town city or Farm postal mechanization engineers and Optical Character reader Specialists to help speed your mail in and out of the post offices postal inspectors to guard your mail Transportation experts to move it only in government will you find tax collectors census takers people minting the coins you use other jobs to be found primarily in government are those in the protection services jobs protecting our lives our homes our property enforcing vehicle regulations maintaining our parks and forests protecting our power and water supply our fish and wildlife enforcing nuclear regulations in environmental and anti-pollution ordinances patrolling our borders and watching over our immigration quotas over a million people work in the protective services if you're interested in law the judicial branch of government offers unique careers that could lead even to appointment to the highest court in the land the Supreme Court many supporting workers are needed in the judicial system legal Clerks Court stenographers Marshalls bailiffs process servers law Librarians are needed to catalog and file laws amendments decisions and transcripts of every case strictly government jobs are found in such Fields as foreign affairs international relations intelligence [Music] as for the numerous job opportunities that are available in government and also in Private Industry a vast number are found in the health services and in Highway design construction and maintenance all kinds of professionals are needed in government as well as in industry for example lawyers serve at every level of government advising helping to draft laws representing the government there are job opportunities in Social Security in planning new cities and redesigning old in forestry and soil conservation in biology the government national state and local is involved in virtually all areas of human activity and thus government by far the world's biggest employer needs people in just about every one of the thousands of occupations in the world of work foreign how do you prepare for a government career once you decide on the type of job you want slant your Education and Training toward it some work requires little more than a minimum of Education a high school diploma however always helps in craft occupations vocational training apprentice and on-the-job Training prepare you for better paying positions for secretarial clerical and business machine positions High School business and Vocational School graduates find it relatively easy to pass written Civil Service examinations foreign most scientific and Technical positions are available to those with appropriate preparation in high school and college many high-level jobs require Advanced degrees the Armed Forces offer free vocational and specialized training in many fields engineering Electronics Air Traffic Control map making aerial and underwater photography oceanography [Music] nucleonics to help government workers get ahead the government offers many in-service and off-duty academic and Technical training programs and in many instances will foot at least a portion of the cost for courses of private institutions leading to college and advanced degrees how about Civil Service salaries the Civil Service pays well at levels comparable to those for work of similar grades and responsibility in the private sector automatic pay increases are yours at set intervals if you work competently you get 13 days sick leave with pay each year and vacation leave with pay starts at 15 days yearly and grows to 26 days after 15 years of service in addition the federal government pays a good part of your health and life insurance and adds much to the amount you pay toward your retirement fund one advantage government offers is the opportunity to transfer from one Federal agency to another in the same city or a distant City without loss of career rights veterans have an advantage an honorable discharge gives a former GI extra points on civil service examinations moving him to a better position on eligibility lists as the population grows and the country's domestic and international programs expand still more jobs will open up in government at all levels some jobs will be special to government others similar to those in Private Industry and covering almost all areas of the world of work you may be interested in one or more of the occupations you have seen and you may like the idea and the advantages of working for the government but whether you do or not you will want to find out about all the career opportunities open to you in government and in Private Industry you will want to see the other titles in the library of career counseling films and talk to your teachers your school guidance counselor your parents you'll want to dig into occupational information available in your library find out as much as you can about careers for yourself only then from all the careers you like and are suited for choose your career let your guidance counselor help you make the choice advise you on your prospects suggest the further education or training you may need advisors in your local office of the state employment service will give you the local as well as the broad picture of the occupation you want to enter job opportunities job requirements wages and conditions what lies ahead discuss career opportunities available in the armed forces at your local armed forces recruiting offices plan ahead prepare now the time and effort may be the best investment you will ever make your future is in your hands today [Music] what you gonna do when you're finally on your own what will you do what will you really do foreign on oh man I went on I went through all that my mic wasn't on so uh dad got it all right so I don't look at the comments when I'm talking anyways this was on found footage Festival uh last night uh George showed it a clip of it for uh tongue touching tonement and um I'm gonna show you the entire film so brace yourself enjoy as a speech pathologist I have had considerable clinical and research interests in the role of somersetic sensory feedback and speech motor Behavior a relationship between abnormal somacetic sensory functioning and abnormal oral motor behavior is being noted increasingly by both clinicians and researchers in attempting to understand this relationship it seems to me that we should be interested in the oral facial sensory system in general and in the manner in which it provides an individual with the types of integrated information needed for learning movements used in speaking chewing and swallowing the perception of motion of the articulators probably is a synthesis of different Sensations principally Kinesis in touch researchers such as Boyd Cooper and law have called attention to the probable role of oral touch receptors in subserving a proprioceptive function as Boyd theorized it is possible that superficial Sensations in the oral area have come to play a particular role in proprioceptive functioning perhaps acting vicariously for specialized muscular proprioceptors based on current knowledge of oral physiology we can postulate at least four tactile sensory skills that appear to have a priori relevance to the acts of speaking chewing and swallowing one detection of the presence of tactile stimuli and depreciation of minimal changes in tactile stimulation two spatial discrimination and localization of tactile stimuli three temporal resolution and discrimination of tactile stimuli and four appreciation of simultaneous bilateral tactile stimuli test procedures that appear to be appropriate for some degree of independent assessment of a number of these sensory skills have been described along with guidelines to expect to perform Us by normal persons in an article entitled the assessment of lingual sensation and perception this article was published in the Journal of speech and hearing disorders volume 34 issue number two in May 1969. the purpose of this film is to demonstrate the administration of these test procedures although adaptable for the assessment of sensation in various parts of the oral facial sensory system I have employed the procedures principally for the assessment of lingual sensation and perception laughs [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] thank you [Music] materials required for the administration of the tests are available commercially or can be readily fabricated the subject is told that a series of tests will be administered to assess her sense of touch Specific Instructions will be given prior to the administration of each test the subject is told that her tongue will be marked with a non-toxic coloring agent to identify specific areas where stimuli will be presented these points of stimulation are marked on the tongue tip in midline the blade of the tongue in midline the lateral margin of the blade of the tongue on each side of the body and on the lateral margin of the tongue tip on each side of the body tactile sensitivity refers to the detection of the presence of a tactile stimulus although a wisp of cotton is gross it is employed as the traditional instrument for assessing tactile sensitivity on the tongue stimuli are presented to a subject on the tongue tip at midline and the lateral margin of the blade of the tongue on each side of the body the subject is informed that her task is to indicate when she is aware of being touched a schedule of randomized stimulus presentations is employed so that 10 stimuli are presented to a subject on each of the three specified tongue areas the subject's performance on the test is scored by Computing the percent of stimuli perceived on each of the three areas of the tongue tactile Acuity denotes the ability to appreciate minimal changes in tactile stimulation a person's ability to detect a Groove engraved on the otherwise smooth surface of a plastic plate is used as a measure of tactile Acuity all but one of 11 plates contain an engraved groove of uniform width and length but varied in depth the blades are passed in a vertical Direction Over the tongue tip the subject is told that she has to report her perception of each plate as smooth or grooved employing the method of minimal change threshold is measured by averaging the groove depth required for perception on five ascending and five descending runs the ability to perceive two simultaneous points of stimulation is used as a measure of tactile spatial discrimination a modified caliper adapted for sensory testing is used as the instrument for assessing two-point discrimination ability thresholds for two-point discrimination are established on the tongue tip at midline and on both lateral margins of the blade of the toe the subject is informed that when stimulated she is to report her perception of one or two points she is instructed to report two points only when she perceives two clearly distinct stimuli again the method of minimal change is employed threshold being measured by averaging the distance between two points required for two-point perception on each of five ascending and five descending runs increments of 0.025 inches are used for each run observations are made of the two-point lymans for each test area in addition the degree of asymmetry and Lyman values for the lateral margins of the tongue on each side of the body is noted tactile localization ability refers to the spatial localization of tactile stimuli a stylus is used to stimulate the tongue stimuli are presented to a subject at six points on the tip and the blade of the tongue the subject is instructed to identify the perceived area of stimulation on a schematic drawing of the tongue a schedule of randomized stimulus presentations is employed so that 10 stimuli are presented to a subject on each of the six specified tongue areas the subject's performance on the test is scored by noting the percent of stimulate localized correctly observations are also made on the direction and consistency of mislocalizations and the degree of asymmetry and localization ability indicated for the two sides of the tunnel tactile Extinction is the inability to appreciate simultaneous bilateral tactile stimuli two applicator sticks are used to stimulate the tongue the subject who stimulated unilaterally on each lateral margin of the blade of the tongue and simultaneously on both tongue margins the subject is instructed to indicate the side or sides of the tongue stimulated a randomized schedule is employed so that 10 stimuli are presented unilaterally to each tongue margin and 10 bilaterally to both tongue margins the subject's performance is evaluated by noting the percent of perceived simultaneous bilateral stimuli [Music] microphone first before I turn on the webcam um yeah so you saw it here uh assessment of lingual tactile sensation and perception uh film May 1970 um featured on found footage festivals VCR party last night as a competitor in the their tongue-touching tournament which they did I guess in honor of Valentine's Day and I put a link in the comments for you to vote uh it would be great it would be a coup if we won that uh with a film from our collection George uh from VCR party he showed a segment of it but he pulled it from our site and uh I'm willing to share the victory but it would be great if we trounce found footage Festival guys again uh we found some we found some twice with the toe tapping tournament with having a very entertaining uh jingles and it would be great if we trounce them with the toe tap or with the tongue tapping wait forget it the tongue touching tournament that's Joe Pickett and his alliteration uh things that drive me nuts anyways thanks
